Harbaugh takes responsibility for letting the fumbled option play get called in

SANTA CLARA – This is what Jim Harbaugh said about the fumbled fourth quarter pitch play that resulted in a touchdown for the Rams defense.

Q: Was the fumble-touchdown Kaepernick’s mistake or was it the mistake of the entire offense?

HARBAUGH: Tough loss. We’ve got to finish games. That’s our job to finish those games. We all take responsibility for that. Responsibility-taking starts with me. On that option play that resulted in the nightmare scenario, it was a position in the game where I should not have let that play be called, so I take responsibility for that.

Q: Is that a Kendall Hunter play, or was that always a Ted Ginn play?

HARBAUGH: That still would have been Ted as the option back. But again, I think that was just too much ball handling, too much chance for the play to go sideways and backwards. At that part of the game, I take responsibility for that.

Q: Is the failsafe to hold the ball and not pitch it if there’s a defender coming?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: Is that drilled into him, to make sure in that situation not to pitch it?

HARBAUGH: Like I said, the greatest share of this responsibility is on me, on that particular play. For letting that play get called in when we’ve got those different options with four minutes left in the game.

Q: But you didn’t call the play. You just allowed it to get called in. Is that correct?

HARBAUGH: Yes, that’s correct.

Ginn does not like to get tackled, when he caught a rare ball, he would most likely go out of bounds, he had no desire to go after that loose ball, another #1 bust, we need next year, a good return man on punts and a FG kicker.

Bad play calling, bad coaching, bad execution on CK, and lack of hustle on Ginns part, fall on the ball!!! Receipe for disaster and it was.

Yep — there is plenty of blame to go around on that play. The amazing thing for me was that I saw Kaep make that play several of times at Nevada, and I do not recall seeing him pitch it anywhere near that poorly. He rushed the play due to pressure by the defense and just pitched it too hard.

What exactly does taking responsibility mean? When I take responsibility for something, there is generally significant cost involved.

I know what you mean, man!
Is there also a judge waving a gavel around, wagging his finger at you, and that damned paternity test…..damn!

Basically, JH is taking the public bullet for the play being a disaster because he holds veto power over any play called, and he chose not to exercise that power. Behind the scenes and in the confines of 49er offices he probably has mentioned once or twice to GR that a play call of that nature based upon field position and time remaining in the game is not a good call.

Let’s all hope this is not the same answer Jim gives after week 17 when he is asked who is responsible for the Niners’ cliff fall.

Can I make a music request for the locker room? On our own stairway to Super Bowl heaven, Jim needs to be reminded that “there is still time to change the road you’re on”.

      @ OpenMinded:

He already did that with the move to Kaepernick.

Perhaps then I will request another song:

        Switchback!

        I made a choice that I regret
Now what I see is what I get
It’s too late to look back
I’ve got no way to switchback
It’s too late to look back
Ain’t okay, I’ve got no way to switchback

Openminded…love it or hate it,we have to stick with Kap..what message does it send the team if Harbaugh Switches back to Alex? One mistake and I’m putting you back on the sideline?

      • Prime Time says:

You cannot switch back but it’s decision that JH will regret.

      • jgwindsor says:

so what kind of responsibility should he take for the hot hand comment….he basically suggests with that comment one cannot get a hot hand unless another gets hurt…and u cannot get your hot hand back unless he says so

there was no win win in the comment….his hot hand comment was purely one sided and got AS out of the way by suggesting CK met his hot handed definition without having to define hot hand
