Kaepernick on the four fumbled snaps: “Don’t ask Goody about it, it was my fault.

SANTA CLARA – In the middle of the 49ers’ locker room Tuesday afternoon, Jonathan Goodwin answered questions about the four fumbled snaps Sunday night in New England. After a few questions, Colin Kaepernick walked over and defended Goodwin. Here’s the transcript.

Q: Is there anything you can attribute the center exchange problems to?

GOODWIN: We really haven’t had any problems, so there’s nothing in particular.

Q: Does the weather affect it?

GOODWIN: Yes, I definitely think it makes it tough. You have a slick ball and things like that. I know they were saying there is some video of it, so we’ll look at it. Being that I hadn’t had any issues with it in good weather, I’m not overly concerned about it. It’s something that, of course, I hate that it happened and I’m glad that we recovered.

Q: Will you spend more time on that this week?

GOODWIN: I haven’t checked the forecast, but if rain is in the picture, it’s definitely something that we need to work on.

Q: Did you work on it during the sideline to iron it out?

GOODWIN: He took a couple from me on the sideline, but late in the game it was something that we tried different and we didn’t have any problems towards the latter part of the game.

Q: Was the ball slicker?

GOODWIN: It did feel slicker, but each time it happened, I definitely felt the ball almost slide out and go through his hands. It was something that me and him talked about. The fact that the latter part of the game we tried something different and didn’t have any problems and we hadn’t had any problems in regular weather, I don’t think it’s something to be concerned about.

Q: Did the glove make a difference?

GOODWIN: I think so. Regardless of the circumstance, we don’t want the ball on the ground.

Q: Have you wet balls during practice before?

GOODWIN: Haven’t here. We’ve had some rain here lately, but other places I have.

KAEPERNICK (walking by): Don’t ask Goody about it, it was my fault.

Goodwin: 50-50, husband and wife. Of course, he’s the wife.

    Hilarious quote…

Considering their position when Kaeps behind center I’m not so sure about that ;)

      • Mr. Everything says:

Yeah, and the way Kaep’s been sticking into tight holes, I doubt he’s ever on the receiving end.

  2. bayareafanatic says:

Remember whrn the Smithers said Tolzien would pass up Kaep and be #2

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Uh, Bay, I think that was Jordo, not DS, Prime, or even 19R. I could be wrong, but I’m darned sure not going to research it, Bro! ; >)

    • 23jordan/ says:

      Tuna,

I never said that. I have never hyped Tolzein.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Ok, Jordo, I publicly retract, with apology.
Lots of people of all persuasions got excited when Scott had a good preseason game. IF I remember correctly his next wasn’t as impressive. I think you might admit to being part of the “anyone but Alex” clan, so pardon my faulty memory.

      • Calistoga Red says:

That’s correct – you didn’t say Tolzein, you said JJ.

If we want a QB to come into a game after AS gets injured, I want a smart safe QB to be that guy. From what I gather Tolzein is that guy.

CK seems too eratic and dangerous to me. We won games last year by being the team that won’t beat themselves. AKA no TO’s. Smart calm guys do that better than gunslinger types which I think CK is.

+ for Jack he got it right

        undercenter,

This offense is not a prototypical wco. It is very similar to the Norv Turner offense with the play action, etc with some wco mixed in.

That being said, I really think the QB battle is between Tolzien and Johnson for the 3rd spot. It is going to be a good one too. This roster is so deep with talent that some very tough decisions will have to be made and good players will be cut. What a difference a year makes.

If they had anyone better than they could displace AS now. Unfortunately they don’t. They may need to put some of those draft choices together to get their man. ( How insightful )
        Hoferfan67 says:
        October 18, 2012 at 10:55 pm
MD, AS has the rest of the year. Why do you automatically think CK is the heir apparent? I’ve seen nothing to lead me to believe he is the next QB. The 9ers have accumulated quite a few draft picks. I’d like to see them trade up and get another QB.
        ( Maybe trade for Devlin?)
        bayareafanatic says:

Sadly Jack Hofer makes it look like CK isnt the answer when in reality we don’t know. What we do know is that Smith ain’t it.
        ( lol )

Go ahead and try to paste over your dick-ish statements, Bay. The question is why even make such an assinine public vow? You showed your true colors as a Niners and football fan right there, pal.

      • ribico says:

Exactly, claude. Just more proof haters are petty d-bags not over who or who isn’t playing. They are just petty d-bags by nature.

      • 23jordan says:

        Tuna,

I would definitely admit to anyone but Alex. That was because they were an unknown. Alex was a known, as far as I was concerned. I knew what he could not do. He won a playoff game. I said he couldn’t. He proved me wrong on that one. As far as everything else??? The chickens have come hime to roost. I said he’d be benched by the bye week. It took a little longer than that but we got the job done.

Tuna, all in the name of seeing us win a Super Bowl. Not about seeing Smith succeed. Apparently JH felt like Smith couldn’t get it done either. That’s water undr the bridge now. Kap is a rising star. Right about now, I’d rather be Kaepernicking, ( Kissing my bicep) rather than Smithing. (Sitting on the bench)

Don’t be bitter. That was a good post. Funny as hell. Didn’t need the parenthetical asides, but it took a helluva lot more work than I’d be willing to expend to provide historical context.

      • 23jordan says:

        Bay,

That was HILARIOUS!! I see the Smithers really enjoyed it as well. One day I may go back and do the same. Give the Smithers some of my many quotes about JJ and Kap. I’m sure they’d eat that up. However, I don’t think they would care for the ones about Smith! lol

On another note. I’ve not smelled BS anywhere!

      • ribico says:

        >>One day I may go back and do the same.

I have no doubt you will, Jordo. It will only add more proof that you belong in bay’s corral of jackasses.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

How is this any different than someone pasting an old Jordan post and ragging on him about being a welcher?

Who’s bitter? I have no stake in this game.

Clearly, bay’s ego took a huge bruising the past two days, and he needed to do something like that to repair the damage. As I said, it’s more than a little pathetic, especially the parentheticals.

      • Neal says:

        Thanks Bay,

For once I was right when I said on Oct 25, that AS days will be over soon. Although I won’t keep bring it up. lol

      • Mr. Everything says:

        CB

Yeah, yours is not as bitter as Ribico’s, but do you not appreciate all the work that must have gone into that compilation? It only seems pathetic if you can’t separate yourself from your negative feelings toward the author. But what do I know? I thought it was amusing.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

The differences are numerous, but let’s go with these three:

        1. With the exception of Prime, none of the commenters targeted by bay have welched on anything.

        2. Unlike jordan, who would have you believe that he has been driving the Kaepernick bandwagon from the very beginning, none of those commenters are bragging that they were right about Kaepernick.

        3. bay’s message is in essence about him being right (even if he really wasn’t) whereas the messages I and others posted about jordan were about his hypocrisy/ignorance/welching.

I don’t know how you missed it, but Prime has been called out for welching repeatedly. To the extent your comment is really a criticism of me for not calling out Prime continually, I will simply note that I have commented negatively on his not keeping his word.

That was a great post. And hopefully it will end all of this bickering. But I’m a little hurt you didn’t post my “if smith doesn’t become more consistent he will lose his job and not return next season” you know the one rocket and ribico jumped all over. Wheeew!

I’m a football fan Claude. I pump my fists, I pace in front of the TV. I chest bump with my buddies. I hug strangers at games. I lose my voice from yelling to help my defense. You can read my posts and taste my passion.

How about you Clod? You spend 80% of your time picking at others posts and then cutely displaying what you’ve found in italics. Ooooooooh. Then you go and post and it looks like this:

Reality check: The 49ers have a record of 5-2, which has come against teams with a collective record of 21-14 (.600) in games not against the 49ers. The team has beaten high-flying offenses (GB, Detroit) and tough, stingy defenses (Seattle). SF is one of the best teams in the league and has plenty of time to work on areas that need improvement. It’s still very much a good time to be a 49ers fan.

One of your edgier quotes huh Clod. Way to stick your neck out there. Even DS has more passion than you. True DS is out there and has some social issues, but there was passion in that little alien.

Think about that the next time you come hard at someone Clod. Trying to be all cute and outsmarting people : )

      • ninermd says:

Lol bay you have the haters all mad. Like angry girls when the mall closes. Wheeew! Why so bitter Smithers? You got your “I told you so’s” out for awhile. To bad you were wrong.

Now that being said. I got suckered in and thought Smith with the weapons he had this season would break out and become a true elite. Boy what an idiot I was. See guys its that easy. And ribico with that picture still up, why would anybody take you seriously? C’mon homie. Throw up something besides a back up qb grabbing his draft day jersey and 6 years of my life.
Just say you were wrong and your boy isn’t as good as some of us thought he was.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Md,
you are a Niner fan through and through. You weren’t wrong about Smith, you were giving him a chance. All of us were after the Saints game.
We were all looking for the “2nd year in the system” growth. Fact of the matter is that the production was the same. Good not great. Harbaugh’s ego requires great.

      • ribico says:

        >>You got your “I told you so’s” out for awhile. To bad you were wrong.

So Smithers are girls at the mall and haters, little boys in pre-school. Grant must be laughing his you know whatis off at the kindergarten he has here.

        >>And ribico with that picture still up

Wise guy, who was QBing that magical season last year? Who was QBing that drought-ending win in Green Bay this year? Who is the QB that is currently sitting at #3 in the league ratings? And the final question – why are you so incensed that I have this avatar, starter or backup? I thought you were a fan of the team? It sounds much more like you are a hater of one single player. Oh, that’s right, you are.

      • claude balls says:

        @ ninermd:

Why am I not surprised that the Dunning-Kruger effect poster boy completely missed the point?

        @ bay:

I didn’t label you as the guy who makes things up. You made things up, and I revealed that you did so. There’s a big difference between the two. I realize that ninermd can’t tell the difference, but you should be able to.

I don’t lack passion for the 49ers. Why do you think I spend so much time defending players and coaches from b/s criticism? You seem to be confusing passion with the making of uninformed, premature and/or poorly-considered opinions about the team, its players and coaches. The two things are separate and distinct.

      • Nick says:

Great post Bay. Don’t worry about ruffling feathers. Cult mentality is hard to break. Should Alex leave SF, i wonder how many would follow him? Should he end up playing for another NFC West team imagine the dilemma they’d face when the Niners play that team.

    • Neal says:

DS was pushing Tolzein over Kaep, this blog today has been mostly Smither free, love the fresh air on here.

    • exgolfer says:

      Bay,

      Is this you moving on?

As for who was saying Tolzein would beat out Kaepernick, it seems to me there were just as many Alynchers saying that as Smithers.

In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to find a quote, or two, from you saying it could be Tolzein that ended up replacing Smith.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Ex,
I never said Tolzien would pass Kaep. I did however say Tolzien would be better than Smith.

      • Matt says:

Sadly, I said Tolzien would replace Smith and Kaepernick would be the 3rd string. I like the conventional pocket passer that Tolzien is. I did completey misjudge Kaepernick’s talent and ability to command the offense.
I’m very pleased with Kaepernick and the strides he’s made since the preseason. I hope Tolzien will stay with SF in a back up role.
I don’t take offense to Bay’s post at all. I enjoyed the predictions and had I been right I would have really enjoyed rereading it. Nice prediction and insight Bay.

      • ninermd says:

Matt maybe you overlooked and misjudged harbaughs qb eye for talent. I really don’t think anyone saw ck becoming a pocket passer this early. However a lot saw that smith Didnt improve in that category.
Ill say it one last time. The NYG game was the end of Smith. Not a concussion

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Matt,
nice post. Even a broken clock is right twice a day right? I’m not so much happy that I was right about Kaep, I’m more happy for him and ultimately for the team.
Wasn’t that New England game exciting????

    • harbinger says:

I think your trolling is #2.

    • ribico says:

Since the haters have Smith on the brain syndrome, here is something they can chew on:

Smith has a passer rating of 104.1, and Aaron Rodgers, Robert Griffin III and Peyton Manning are all within one point of Smith, who ranks third in the league. As it stands, unless Smith attempts seven more passes this season, he will be ineligible to win the passer rating crown, but if Harbaugh is so inclined, he could help Smith qualify…

      http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/18/alex-smith-can-still-win-passer-rating-crown/

      • ninermd says:

Don’t you think the hater tag should be dumped? Who hates a backup qb? They don’t play.

And I think with the desperate teams needing a qb. Smith will be worth a second rd and maaaaybe a lower rd pick on top of that. His salary isn’t eye popping. I think he will land wherever Norv turner does. If not he might fit in well with the chiefs. Yes the chiefs. I think they have mailed it in. Their running game is and will be decent next season and the defense is still pretty solid. I think the whole they fell into killed any drive to play like they did last season. Definitely an underachiever this season.

      • ninermd says:

At least you didn’t go BS and started hating the coach, but you still are looking foolish everytime you call someone else a hater. When your profile pic is of this same guy. Don’t forget I was ridin with smith and if he came back due to injury I still would. Because I TRUST the coach.
So save your pitty party because I remember you taking some backhand stabs at the decision also.

No matter how long smith is gone. Or if some miraculous miracle happens and he starts again this blog will be split. Not because of Smith, but because of all of the trash talking and personal attacks with each other. It’s like I’ve stated before. I could mend some battle scars with most on here but NEVER onelame. He is a guy worth going to jail for. I think some feel the same about others. And it will never be fixed. Kinda like two gangs that live a street from each other. Sad but true. This blog will always be split.

comments… you mean like “isn’t it great that the Niners are winning again?” And “who cares that our QB is not throwing for 300+ yards?” Or “we are a pound and ground running team.” You mean, Nonsense like that? Which, btw has not changed. The only thing that’s changed is that the hater’s hate is now directed to the coaching staff for the team being what it is.

As a true Niner fan, how much more are you jacked up about the Niners games now that Kap is playing. I can’t wait til the game on Sunday. I hating watching offensive replays with Smith. Hell, they were just too boring. Did you see those bullets from Kap on Sunday? I’ve watched that Pats game twice already! Good football right there.

      • claude balls says:

        @ ninermd:

Smh. Yeah, I’m the one who started all the disagreements on this blog. It wasn’t the clowns attacking one of the team’s players with ignorant b/s, but those of us who dared to point out that the attacks were ignorant b/s.

In your world, were the British responsible for starting WWII?

      • ninermd says:

Two three J…… Yes I can honestly say the offense is more dynamic and exciting. The one thing I did like about the NYG game was smith and GR were trying to stretch the field in that game. Eh emmm it sucks it failed but that’s what I wanted to see this year from Smith. Without the int’s of course.

And I can say that if its a 3rd and long situation I’m a little more at ease with CK in there.

How about our defense getting back to 11 form. The last 6 games they have been lights out. Need that in the next 5 straight victories. You going to the first playoff game? I have a feeling that there will be two again in SF this season

      • 23jordan says:

        Md,

Throwing downfield against the Giants was ugly last game. We tried that because we had some success last season. Smith’s lack of arm strength showed in that game.

Im definitely going to the 1st playoff game. That 2nd one is going to be in Atlanta. The Falcons are on fire. I’m hoping Alex Smith goes across the field and slaps Roddy White!

I got us having to play Green Bay in the 1st playoff game at home. Gonna be a tough road in the playoffs but we won’t lose again unless Kap gets hurt and we have to play Smith. Other than that, we are going to win the super bowl my friend!

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Md, Jordo,
I WILL BE AT THE PLAYOFF GAMES. Meeting you guys in person and sharing a beer has been long overdue.

      • ribico says:

        >>Because it was YOU who said you put it up to throw it in the faces of the “haters”.

And from the continuing comments of the haters, it seems to be doing that job pretty well. I’ve always said my support for Smith was in inverse proportion to the nonsense he was taking from the likes of jordo, neal, bay, and yourself. Again I ask you, why does it matter to you?

      • ribico says:

        >>Meeting you guys in person and sharing a beer has been long overdue.

Ooh, inaugural meeting of the d-baggers club. No doubt historic in the anals of team history.

      • claude balls says:

        @ribico:

No doubt historic in the anals of team history.

I see what you did there.

      • Mr. Everything says:

Wait? Claude Balls and Ribico do anal?

  3. Razoreater says:

The fact that Vince Wilforks’ breath was in Goodwins’ face did not help matters. Kaepernicks’ defense of his Center is endearing.

  4. msclemons67 says:

The center exchange has to be fixed. I don’t know if it’s a timing issue or a technique issue but I doubt the 49ers could survive 4 fumbles against the SeaBastards. And I’m not sure the fumblerooski will work for a TD again ;-)

That fumblerooski has to go into the collection of great Gore plays.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Seems like it would have been right up his alley, but Jimmy Raye didn’t have that one in his play book either.

    • mavin says:

I will have to say that CK7 had a great game, but let me ask a couple of questions. What would be said on this blog if Smith had fumbled 4 times from center? What would you say after he threw an interception? I am one that also liked Tolzein. I liked his composure and his ability to work under the system showed get potential. Potential doesn’t count, action does. Now the system has been changed to accomodate CK7 and even with that he has not been dynamic most of the time. He will probably end up being a great QB if he can stay healthy. As things are working out Smith probably won’t be around next year and that may come back to haunt us. Arizona will be looking for a QB at the end of this season. I know that is the wish of many, but I am not happy the way it happened. All said, the team is the charge of JH, and win or lose I am still a fan and will back whoever plays.

      • Nick says:

Smith leaving SF and potentially going to a team like Arizon will not haunt anybody but Cardinal fans. I’d love for the Niners to face AS twice per year. Easy to defend, near guatanteed wins.

      • dangle says:

whooo, this place would still be smoldering next year if Smith had fumbled 4 snaps. lol. double-standard for sure, but that doesn’t seem to bother those people.
And unfortunately, I have to agree with nick. I would be annoyed that Smith would share his knowledge of the playbook (as anyone would) with his new team, but thats about it. He doesn’t scare me.

      • Msclemons67 says:

I agree Dangle – if Smith had 4 fumbles he’d get flamed. He has years of failure as a resume which means a tolerance for mistakes is very low.

CK gets the benefit of the doubt – for now – because he hasn’t stunk for nearly a decade. If we have to endure 8 years of Keapologies I’d guess he’ll get flamed as well.

    • Crab15 says:

md – Holy crap, Kap is the first Niner QB to throw 4 TD passes in game since Jeff Garcia?…. No way, that can’t be right. That’s almost inconceivable to me. That’s over 8 years, I hope someone double checks if Sando is correct.

      • msclemons67 says:

I also loved this little tidbit:

“Tom Brady threw one touchdown pass and two interceptions Sunday night. He had 19 touchdowns and one interception in his previous seven games.”

I was really worried about Welker before the game. Who was covering him? He disappeared against the 49ers.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        It is correct Crab.

      • Crab15 says:

Jack – Lousy Jeff George threw 4 TD passes in a game 3 times? QB’s like Montana, Marino, Brady and Brees must have done it more than 10 times.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Actually Crab, Jeff George was an immense talent who unfortunately got ruined behind the worst offensive line I’ve ever seen.
He had grit and a cannon for an arm. He was a prick too.

      • Crab15 says:

bay – For being a #1 overall pick, he was a bust. He played on 5 or 6 different teams and not all of their O-lines sucked.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Crab,

Montana had 4 in the 4th quarter alone in Philadelphia back in ’89, and 6 in Atlanta the following year.

      • Neal says:

Crab, that is correct, did a post earlier AS has never thrown for 4 TD passes in 77 games, CK did that in less then a 1/2 season.

      • Crab15 says:

Neal – Sorry I missed your post earlier.
Are you as fired up for Seattle as you were for Pats? For some reason, I’m not as pumped up yet.
I may have to visit a loser Seahawk blog or just look at a photo of Peter the rat…. I choose rat Carroll photo.

      • dangle says:

I am ridiculously pumped for the SEA game! F those guys! I’ve had these two games circled for a while. The stakes are huge (not as big since we beat the pats) but its still huge.
Crabs I highly recommend checking out some seattle blogs. There were some linked here earlier. Its pretty comical; their hate for us and harbaugh makes our hate for them seem quite reasonable. at least in my opinion.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Dangle

Do you have any other names in the history of this blog?

      • Crab15 says:

dangle – Will do tomorrow…..Time to watch NFL live on ESPN2 in bed. ZZZZZ

      • harbinger says:

Jeff George was always lousy. The facial attributes: blaming everybody but himself. Never a part of the solution. His lines quit on him…practically the worst thing you can say about a QB.

      • Neal says:

        @ Crab,

I am not fired up yet, it usually takes me till game time, for the adrenalin to kick in. These night games are torture to wait for.

  5. Houston 9er says:

Not exactly sure who’s fault it was but I noticed 2 things on the replays of the snaps.

    1. CK’s hands were coming apart at the snap which caused him to mishandle the snap.

    2. Goodwin appeared to be inconsistent in where he was placing the ball. On 2 of the snaps, the ball hit CK on the outside of his palm. It was hard to tell if Goodwin was hitting center or if CK’s were being placed inconsistently.

At any rate, I think both guys are partially to blame. They’ll fix it this week. I’m not too worried about it.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

I think that’s right. Dilfer caught that pull-apart motion too. Pressure can make you revert to bad habits until you train (repeat reps) through it. Goody took some blame too, and it seems they made some adjustment. I think the real fix is off-season, but they’ll work this week.
I’d guess there’s just a chance we’ll see some pressure up the middle Sunday.

  6. ML says:

Q: Have you wet balls during practice before?
Really- what kind of question was this?
    LOL

  7. rkshanny says:

“Does the weather affect it?” “Was the ball slicker?” Well, duh! What kind of dumb questions are these? No wonder many players and coaches do their best to avoid the “press”! Sheesh!

  8. Crab15 says:

Who the hell is still voting for Crabtree in poll? Crabtree got an extra 13 votes today.
Oh…….I get it now, you’re pre-voting for the Feb 3rd rematch. Brilliant!

    • Crab15 says:

Lol, Crabtree got 3 more votes (200 now) in last 25 minutes. You jokesters kill me man. I love this blog

    • dangle says:

Who’s still voting? People that really like being right!
Thats like the easiest multiple choice question ever!

      • Crab15 says:

Lol……….Hey dangle – Who gets more yards rushing Sunday night, Gore or Lynch?
I wonder if Niners can still win if Lynch goes for 100+?

      • dangle says:

I think Lynch will get more yards than gore, but the niners collectively will have more than the seawacks. Russel Wilson is there Xfactor there though. Didn’t Lynch get over 100 in the first game? Niners beat them then, and with a relatively anemic offensive output.
Both offenses have improved since then, so this game will be a very tough challenge, in one of the worst places to play. The spread is 49ers -1, so nobody knows how its going to go.

      • Crab15 says:

Dangle – One things for sure, Niners won’t pull a Singletary in Seattle and have players walk out holding hands like a high school team.

    • Nick says:

It sure isn’t Prime and his multiple screen names

  9. Coach AkeemRaheebSmokaSumyaweed says:

WTF is wrong with Burnin Vernon? Leave your feet if you want to be a an elite TE. Does Penis Pete really believe his waiver wire Corners can cover Randy Smoka sum weed Moss? How about Crappytree. They might get to Kaperdick but they will never cover SF down the field Sunday Night.
Penis Pete needs both his heads checked. Think we will see Penis Pete running around the field like a two year old bout to go potty in his Cacky hagars Sunday? F8ck Pete Carrol!

  10. TIM says:

According to Randy Cross,Joe Montana always took the blame for all his O linemen’s mistakes and they loved him for that and would run through a wall for him. That is LEADERSHIP !

  11. dangle says:

Some relevant Seattle information gleaned from their blogs:
They have injuries in their secondary, plus the browner’s suspension. And since they lost to the niners in SF, they added some read-option stuff for wilson since they played us last, which sounds dangerous, given that their running game is already quite good. Sidney rice has a foot injury, but will probably play. And of course, our old friend Braylon is no longer with them.

    • Grimey9er says:

Russel Wilson scored 3 tds off that read option vs the Bills.

      • AngusinCanada says:

I listen to a lot of Buffalo sports radio up here, and they were furious, and could barely comprehend how poorly the bills D played the read option. And I watched most of the game. It was pathetic.

Dave Wannstead. Talk about a sure fire firing….

  12. dangle says:

This seattle blogger’s power rankings has SF #1 and SEA #2. Pretty interesting, he shares his formula… worth a quick read.

Flat out awesome. The kiss of the two inch pythons top it off. She’s already on the right track and will make a fine 49er fan

  14. Rick Carroll II says:

If we can go into Foxboro and flat out run with the Red Hot Pats, I would think we could do the same with the Red Hot Hawks. Its going to be a tough game coming off such a high. My only question is, can Roman call another A game, and keep the throttle full bore. Spy wilson, take away their 2 main threats, and make them play slow, hard nosed football. We got a little banged up in the cold at Gillete stadium, but I think we were built to win that game. Lets see some finesse against the hawks…. GO NINERS. O yah, and this kid Kaepernick, yah, He can play.

    • Nick says:

Don’t expect a high scoring game against Seattle. It may be very similar to 1st meeting between these teams. Most scoring will occur by the Niners. Game over Carrol – hopefully no relations to the duech bag coach.

  15. rocket says:

I had a chance to watch the game again on rewind although I haven’t watched the Coaches film yet so Jack may have a different take, but I really didn’t see the defense go to a true prevent mode after they went up 31-3. They were changing it up all night between 3 and 4 man rush, sometimes 5, off zone, press man etc, and they kept doing that it appeared. It just seemed like the Pats hit another gear out of desperation and the Niners couldn’t keep up.

The offense also didn’t go conservative on their possessions during this time. On two of the 3 drives they passed on 2 out of 3 plays but the Pats got pressure on Kap to force incompletions (also could have been called for a PI on a throw to LMJ) and they also got a sack. Boone took an Illegal hands to the face penalty which set them back as well.

My first reaction was the same as everybody else in thinking that the Coaches called off the dogs but now I don’t think that was the case. It was a combination of the Patriots being desperate and surgical with the short passing game, and Justin Smith going down with an injury. Once the Patriots got rolling they were impossible to stop until the end when the defense finally held up.

One thing that really stands out is how fast the tempo is for NE on offense. They were getting the plays off so quickly it’s amazing the Niners didn’t give up something bigger because it’s hard to get set in those situations. Just a great character win for the team to have NE come back like that but still have the fortitude to pull out the win.

    • claude balls says:

      @ rocket:

I hate it when pesky facts get in the way of a good story.

    • Nick says:

Nice post Rocket. I haven’t had a chance to watch rewind yet, but thanks for that perspective.

    • AngusinCanada says:

I read somewhere, and have no idea where, or if it’s true, that the Pats, right now, run the fastest tempo offense (measured in avg. seconds between plays) in the history of the league. It’s a weapon for them.
I think the biggest thing during that comeback was that our pass-rush, sans Smith, was getting winded, due to a combination of extended Pats drives, and our stalled offense. It’s a positive reinforcement effect, our guys start getting tired from the pace, and then have even more trouble generating those intense bursts needed in an effective pass rush, thereby stranding themselves out there even longer, getting even more winded.
Real gut check there late in the 4th.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Nice take Rocket. Mixing it up is important, but I kind of cringed at the 3 man rush approach. I’ve seen it work better in our own end than out in the open field. Oh well, make no mistake, if I were a GM, I’d hire Fangio over me as DC!
In an interview sometime earlier this season Fangio spoke to Prevent and soft defenses. As I recall (check me Jordo! :>0 ) he said that QB comeback drives can have success because they take more chances, so they make some more plays. Statistically those situations are also ripe for sacks and picks.
      Then there’s Brady.

  16. undercenter says:

Kaepaplogist – sounds like a rectal examine to me.
