Manningham out vs. Patriots

The 49ers have announced Mario Manningham is out tonight against the Patriots. This will be the second game in a row Manningham misses with a shoulder injury.

Without Manningham last week against the Dolphins, Randy Moss played 29 snaps, was targeted four times and made two catches.

Vernon Davis played 57 snaps, was targeted twice and made one catch.

Delanie Walker played 40 snaps, was targeted once and made one catch.

A.J. Jenkins played eight snaps and was not targeted for a pass.

Against the Patriots tonight, which player – Moss, Davis, Walker or Jenkins – do you expect to fill Manningham’s role as the 49ers’ No.2 receiver?

Moss, Walker and Miller will fill the void left by Manningham. Jenkins will get 8 to 10 snaps when they go to 3 wide receiver sets. Look for Moss to catch that bomb or draw a pass interference pentalty in this game.

Couldn’t you have written/posted this last night? You’re simply restating a Maiocco mailbag topic from yesterday. Old news…

But I’ll go for it anyway. Here goes: VD and DW will be targeted more than usual, Randy Moss will be targeted deep early and catch 1 TD, and Jenkins will catch a short slant and take it 60+ YAC for the score. Crabtree will be the #2 receiver today, second to VD.

Y Critique everything Grant does? If you dont like his blog, please stay with Matt M. That gets old

        Steele

I don’t critique much Grant does, but this thread is a little stale, seeing as how it was posted a full 15 hours after Maiocco’s. If he’s not gonna bother when the news drops, it wouldn’t hurt to get a little extra insights on the topic 15 hours later.

Ex Pats Moss will have a big game against his former team. Ex Niner Lloyd will have a terriable game against his former team. Its on the Niners offense to win this game, going to need 24 points to beat the Pats. 24-21 Niners win on last minute field goal by Ackers.

    • Steelematic says:

Under…like the pick but i hope we NEVER depnd on Akers again. His best year was last year. I hope we have lesrned our lesson and never settle for a fg but use it if we try n score but miss out. If Akers was still MONEY we would have 1 loss n in 1st in NFC. Go for 6, never settle for 3 with Akers again

      • undercenter says:

I hear ya Steel, I dont like depending on Ackers but I think he starts ending his slump against the Pats.

      • Steelematic says:

Hope your right under. Because we sure could use the 2011 version of David Akers

      • DS94everXev says:

Has any team won the Super Bowl with their FG kicker in a slump thru the playoffs?

Points are hard to come by in the playoffs. That means the kicker needs to make his FG’s.

      • Neal says:

It’s not like their is a FG kicker that is lights out from the 55 yard line that is available, I am sure their will be competition for that spot next season.

      • CG says:

One loss? I don’t remember the Vikings or Giants games being dependent upon a field goal.

Wasn’t Lloyd a Ram last year? He had a nice gamewhen we played them in the season finale.

  4. BOS49er says:

It has to be Jenkins. He is an unknown, to us and to the rest of the league. Now would be a great coming out party for him. If VD or Moss clears out and AJJ runs a crossing route I love his YAC potential

  5. Neal says:

The Niners will use two tightends tonight, so hoping that DW and VD have big nights.

  6. Steelematic says:

I hope its LMJ in the screen game. I still never realized why we dont run it 5-10x a game with him. u cant teach speed. Lord knows this man has it

  7. Houston 9er says:

Hopefully MM is healed and ready to go next week. That’s a much bigger game than this one anyway.

  8. Brotha Tuna says:

Kenny Mayne and Frank Caliendo had amusing segments on ESPN today.

  9. 23Jordan says:

If vernon davis wants the ball more, he has to define his cuts more as he runs routes. He rounds out the cut and defenders are adjusting quicker. If jason whitten can get open every week, despite a double team. VD can too.

  10. Brotha Tuna says:

Not really a surprise, I guess, but all 5 of the dudes on Countdown picked the Pats. Buckle up boys!

    • Sean in Canada says:

I can’t wait to hear Harrison and his biased crap tonight before the game. The Pats are getting a lot of love for beating up a Texans d that hasn’t been good in over a month. They gave up 37 to the Jags and 34 to the Lions for pete’s sake.

  11. msclemons67 says:

Shall we designate this the open post for general NFL talk? Lots of good games today with the finale being the best.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Yes.

      • msclemons67 says:

        Thanks.

My first observation – Samauel Lam tweeted that the Gangham style guy is doing the halftime show in Toronto.

Isn’t inflicting the Bills on Toronto bad enough?

      • Sean in Canada says:

Clemons, the Toronto people are used to watching crap. They have cfl and the maple leafs.

    • Sean in Canada says:

I heard on NFL radio that rain is expected in Buffalo, which is really gonna hamper the Seahawks in the dome in Toronto. Is proof reading not required in the media?

      • msclemons67 says:

If anything rain would hamper the Bills more than the Seahawks.

You know, if they weren’t playing in a dome.

      • Sean in Canada says:

I’ve heard a few reports from various NFL people discussing the possible issues for the Seahawks in Buffalo. Facts are overrated.

  12. msclemons67 says:

And… it looks like Bad Eli showed up today.

Someone needs to make up Jekyll and Hyde nicknames for him.

  13. Neal says:

I would love to see the Bills knock off the Hawks today and then we beat them next week, is more important to me then this game. The Hawks are a scam with that Green Bay fiacso. Can’t stand Pete Carroll.

  14. msclemons67 says:

The nice thing about the 49ers playing a night game?

I can watch video crack all day. NFL RedZone will be banned by the FDA soon I think.

  15. 23Jordan says:

If vernon davis wants the ball more, he has to define his cuts more as he runs routes. He rounds out the cut and defenders are adjusting quicker. If jason whitten can get open every week, despite a double team. VD can too. Tony Gonzalesz is the truth!

  16. Grant Cohn says:

The Ravens’ offense continues to be terrible, but it’s Cam Cameron’s fault.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

LOL. Bring back Troy Smith! No, Trent Dilfer!
P.S. Grant, there goes your invitation to dinner at the other Harbaugh household too!

    • msclemons67 says:

Cam Cameron was pretty bad, but when your backup is a cardboard cut-out (Caldwell) do you really make that move?

      • Grant Cohn says:

It was a desperation move by John Harbaugh, trying to take the heat off himself and Flacco. It’s not going to work.

The Ravens had 21 total yards and no first downs in the first quarter.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Yeah, I still don’t get it. Some Talking Heads this week seemed to insinuate that the Owner may have driven that firing or ritual sacrifice or whatever it was.
Another theory was that John just did it to one-up Jim for getting all the media attention for switching QBs. Well, OK, that was my Pinot-fueled theory, but if Skip Bayless can spout nonsense, why can’t I?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Whatever the reason was, I bet Cameron is laughing his butt off right now.

      • msclemons67 says:

While hanging out with Ted Ginn Jr’s family.

      • msclemons67 says:

So next week the Ravens will fire Caldwell and replace him with Jimmy Raye. Right?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Maybe they’ll fire John Harbaugh and replace him with Mike Singletary.

      • msclemons67 says:

They could bring in Juan Castillo too. Their defense isn’t looking great today.
