According to Howard Eskin of WIP radio, Greg Roman is one of five initial candidates for the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coaching job.
The other candidates are Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien, Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Oregon head coach Chip Kelly.
I have two questions for you:
1. If you were the Eagles, would you hire Roman to be the head coach? If so, why? If not, which candidate would you hire?
2. Do you think an NFL team will hire Roman to be a head coach this offseason?

49ers RSS feed
Roman grows a mustache and the job’s his.
+1
I think that if Tom Gamble gets a GM job, especially somewhere like San Diego, Roman may go with him.
If I were Eagles, I wouldn’t hire Greg Roman. There’s better candidates out there with better resumes. If it’s true that Roman mostly facilitates the running game, but not the passing game – then that’s a big question mark as well for any potential landing spot. I can’t see how they’d pick Roman over Chip Kelly or Arians. And no, I don’t see Greg Roman getting an NFL head coaching job this year. But, I could see him leaving to the college level possibly. The only scenario I can see him getting an NFL HC position is if Tom Gamble would want to bring Roman with him to wherever he goes, and also bring in Alex Smith as well. But that would also be a risky move for Tom Gamble, as his future is directly tied to whichever coach he wants to hire.
We are safe unfortunately. No team will hire GR. He’s not dynamic enough to be the man in charge. To be a great head coach, you have to have run an elite offensive or an elite defensive system. Greg Roman has run neither. He did at Stanford, but in the NFL his offense has been boring, predictable and lacked imagination.
If I were a team interviewing him I’d wonder why Roman wasn’t able to get their biggest offensive threat the ball.
They’ll go Dirk Koetter or Chip Kelly.
Safe? As if keeping him is a GOOD thing?
Bill O’Brien has a huge buyout clause, I believe it is 8 million, however Penn State said that the Sandusky case would not affect Bowl games which is a lie so not sure if that would stick, if O’Brien gets the Eagle job, the Penn State job will open up, I just hope that someone will hire Roman. Please anyone !!
O’Brien said he was staying at Penn State after their season ended. But of the 5 named I’d try to hire him or Bruce Arians.
Grant,
Happy New Year to you and yours. Hope 2013 brings us continued health and a bay area superbowl victory…
Happy New Year to you, too.
Happy new year guys. Grant, For the new year can you ask the PD to change the format a little for this blog by adding a LIKE or DISLIKE or YOU’RE TRIPPING option at the end of everyones statements.
thanks
That’s a great suggestion, Big.
1. No. Chip Kelly will be the Eagles next coach.
2. No. If the team’s offense suddenly exploded when we switched to Kaepernick I think Roman’s name would be at the top of a lot of lists but I believe that externally as well as internally he will be taking a lot of heat for the team not producing more with better weapons this season even after switching to the gunslinger QB.
What has Greg Roman done to warrant a head coaching position?
I have no clue.
That’s THREE!!!!
He’s a great, great defensive coach…look how he has stifled the Niner Offense!!!!!
I wouldnt hire Chip Kelly, he has never ever worked in the NFL at any capacity. He is the worst possible choice ever. His fast pace offense will never work in the NFL, his knowledge of the game is amongst the lowest of all lows. His players run aloof out of control. Bad hire for sure. (for those who dont know me I am a huge Duck fan and I dont want Chip to go) :) Only the first statement about NFL experience is true.
I am from Oregon and I think His offense will work with some tweaks to it.
Thats what I am afraid of. Where abouts in Oregon are you?
His players run around aloof out of control? To play that fast paced offense effectively you have to have great disciple and coaching. I don’t think you know much about Chip Kelly or the Oregon offense.
You didnt read my last sentence. I know the Oregon offense very well have seen every game for at least 20 years. It was intended as a joke.
Yea, I’m a huge Duck fan myself. Went there 68 to 72. Smoke comes outta my ears when I talk about the Ducks. I went off half-cocked. Ducks and Niners! Niners and Ducks!
I am in Bend.
I love Bend. My wife and I always talk about moving there. What a beautiful place. Great Golf and hiking. Great food and only a couple of hours from Eugene and watchin the Ducks.
Cycling hotspot!
Happy New Year Grant.
Among that list of candidates I would put Roman last. The others all have Head Coaching experience or have been part of Super Bowl staffs.
Roman is on the short list of new HC candidates, but it sounds as though a couple of those fired today may get new jobs for next season. I would put the likelihood at about a 25% chance he gets an NFL gig this year.
Don’t like those odds Jack. :)
Just for the heck-of-it, consider that of the 7 HC’s who lost their jobs yesterday, half of them will get new HC jobs next season, and the remainder will be OC’s or DC’s somewhere. Even the ones that couldn’t coax a cockroach out of their warm-ups with a slide rule. I say, be more respectful of the coaching staff that we have, and remember that they haven’t been bad in their tenure with OUR 49ers. Losing any of the coaches or staff is going to break up chemistry, no matter how small or large we see it. ‘Hate to be redundant, but: “…it ain’t broke; DON’T …. .. ..”.
Completely agree with the notion that to move from coordinator to HC, your offense/defense unit needs to be elite. Roman hasn’t done that. I doubt he could get a NFL HC job. I think he could get a pretty good college program though.
He’s proven nothing to this point. I would be surprised if he was hired as a NFL Head Coach. College head coach would be a higher probability. I would hire Chip Kelly if I were the Eagles.
I could see Cowher or Grudin as good fits in Philly.
It was my assumption GR would be a college head coach first.
It’s a pretty packed field for the Eagles with Bill O’Brien, Dirk Koetter, Colts Bruce Arians and Oregon head coach Chip Kelly.
My main concern is who would replace GR. Kaeps old college coach? Hello Pistol offense, Goodbye 3 Tight Ends and a cloud of dust? Maybe some monster hybrid of both?
My main concern is who would replace GR
Geep Chryst would be the logical choice
He fits the suit
Some fool will hire him…
The Eagles should take Smokey Robinson’s advice:
“You better shop around……….!”
Love it!
I wish Coach Roman well in his search for a head coaching position; if he is successful with his search, Harbaugh should consider bringing in Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator;-)!
My opinion as well. Norv would help this O a lot.
I could see Reid ending up in Buffalo, Cleveland or maybe AZ.
Let’s root for AZ…with Roman as his OC.
Happy New Year Niner brothas!
I’d like Chip Kelly to replace Roman. :)
Back at ya Crab!
Excellent New Years dinner. Now car safe in the garage and listening to some vintage rock&roll & sipping a fine PN w/ good company.
La dolce vita.
Tuna – I’m jealous….Enjoy buddy!
2013!!
Crabs!!! Happy New Years brotha! I always love chatting about football and beer with you. I wish you and your family health and happiness in the new year.
Razor/BigP – Chapagne’s on ice!
Get down tonight!!
Thats who I wanted when Simpletary hired Jimmy Raye.
I wouldnt hire Roman as a head coach. His offense has proven to be limited…
its consistently poor in the red zone, poor in short yardage situations and lacks the ability to play catchup if the team ever gets down. I would pay Philly take him.
So Hammer & Psy rocked it pret good. Question is: Is Psy the President of North Korea?
Catwalk girls! Ah yeah…. Now I’m watchin rockn new years. :)
I think the niners should hire jordo/welcher or the bay neal tandom with jordos madden play calling skills, or bay vast knowledge of coaching kids and neal following like a puppy there is no doubt they could do better than G Roman.
Sourdough Sam, now I know how you got your name, your life has been very sour. Please read football for dumbies at least 5 times, they named the book after you.
“Dumbies”……..classic neal…:)
canada,
I knew it was dummies, but sometimes your at the mercy of auto correct, didnot bother to fix it.
Neal,
It’s all good, happy new year!
Psy call lick pelosi nutz I cannot believe obama had him perform smh singing about American troops killing babies and raping women nice work obama
I think Roman has earned the opportunity to interview. My guess is it will take him several interviews before he lands a job. He may not quite have the experience yet but you never know.
Ooh… And happy new year to you, Grant and to the fans. :)
Happy new year Everyone. Hope you all spent it better than me. Taking care of my sick GF (too much to drink).
@Adam707
Oh, we’ll, Bro, just a slice of life. Sorry for your evening (out before Midnight), but you get credit for being there for her. Little stuff counts.
Over time both you and your partner will do less goofy stuff, but her tastes will continue to evolve to the more complex and expensive. Ha! Enjoy the ride!
They should hire Roman if they want to realise what a mistake it was to fire Ried…Greg roman is Mr Vanilla and a pretty plain offensive coordinator..Andy Ried is actually a very creative offensive mind without the pieces..Can you imagine what what Ried could do with this offense the Niners have..Romans a joke.
Happy New Year to all 49ers Faithful!
34 days till our 6 Lombardi Trophy!
I appreciate the enthusiasm as a fan, but usually that line of thinking only backfires a majority of the time.
Ed,
My enthusiasm for the 49ers has been intact since the 60′ when we had the likes of Roland Lakes, Matt Hazeltine, Dave Wilcox, Ken Willard, John Brodie, Jimmy Johnson, and Kermit Alexander and many more.
There was a lot of misses and hits on my enthusiasm during those long agonizing seasons. But I never wavered then, and I certainly won’t waver now!
Go 49ers!
All the way through to the Superbowl!
+1 John David Crow, Leo Nomellini, Dave Parks, to add a couple of more to your list.
Being HC is a lot different than being an OC. None of us really have a clue whether GR will make a good OC or not.
Here’s a thought, if GR becomes the Philly HC, bring back Marty Morhninweg
The Peter Principle at work.
X1
P.S. Wish for next OC – Norv Turner.
Norv is the old Cowboys OC. I don’t want him anywhere near the San Francisco 49ers.
You do know he was our OC about 5 or so years ago??
Coach Harbaugh is a lucky man. Beautiful and sweet wife, lovely family, and the Head Coach of the best team in the NFL. Whose got it better than Jim?
Hopefully he will have what it takes to make a change at OC the way he did at QB.
He was one of our 7 coordinators. NO!!? HE PUT ALEX back after leaving so soon. He hurt our young Qb and franchise
Happy New Years to all.
Morning after thoughts (no headache or hangover):
> It’s a compliment to be interviewed for any promotion
> GRo is better than he’s being portrayed here
>. If Roman moves on, the answer for his replacement is NOT to go backwards to Morningweg or Turner. There have to be some fresher minds out there.
People have such short memories. Just a couple of years ago we had probably the worst OC in the entire history of the NFL. Jimmy the hat Raye. With Greg Roman running the offense the team is 24-9-1 over two years and all we get here is constant criticism of him.
Seriously guys. 12-4 and 11-5-1 over two seasons, and coming within a couple of special team mistakes of going to the Super Bowl. What more do you want from the guy.
I just don’t understand 49er fans sometimes.
It’s about getting better and turning weaknesses into strengths. Sports aren’t about being satisfied with where you are. It’s a competition. If you don’t like that, maybe a Communist country would be a better choice.
Oh and by the way- coming close to the Super Bowl doesn’t mean you’re strong in every facet of the game. We got to that point in spite of the offense, not because of it.
A real offense!
@ Fourth and Alex: I think you are confusing Madden NFL game with the real thing. There are 11 guys playing defense on the other team who are also professionals. It is not as easy as you think.
What is your own football experience. Have you ever coached anywhere?
Fourth & Alex,
Communist country? What the hell are you talking about, lol!
Everyone know Roman is much better than Jimmy Raye but then again who wouldnt be. The problem with your argument about our record of 12-4 and 11-5 is that it is giving to much praise to the offense for thier part in that record.
Its like saying the spots on the Cheetah made it faster… some things are just along for the ride.
His offense has proven incapable of comming from behind, and poor in goal line & short yardgage situations and poor in the red zone. Good offensive chordinators get TD’s not Field Goals.
If I’m the Eagles, I hire Lovie Smith. 10-6 with the Bears this year. He should be the head coach of the Bears. Firing him was a mistake. The Bears will be worse for it. The Eagles need to act quickly for Smith. He won’t be available for long.
In nine seasons, he was only able to produce one top 15 offense. That is what doomed him, but I agree that he is a very good coach. He just needs a strong OC.
Big P,
The Bears never settled on an OC. They keep changing the system. However, they just ran into a tough schedule toward the end of the season this year. They were overrated in the 1st place. Clearly, as you stated, they need an offensive minde head coach. I’d take a good look at Atlanta’s offensive coordinator.
Oh, and Happy New year Big P and everyone on the best blog in the Bay!
Happy New Year to you too J, I wish you and your family a wonderful and healthy new year.
Thanks P,
So how do you like our playoff chances? Who do you want to play in the next round? I want us to play Green Bay. They’re wounded. I actually think they’re going to lose again to Minnesota. We can’t win a Super Bowl if VD doesn’t contribute. He’s gotta clear his head and make some plays for us.
This team is capable of winning the Super Bowl, but they have to show up focused. They are capable of beating anybody when they show up and they are capable of losing to anybody when they don’t. Like it has all year, the D will have to shoulder the load. I don’t care who we play, I am a big believer of “things happen for a reason.” Getting the bye week to rest will be the difference maker for this team if they reach the Super Bowl though. They need to regroup physically and emotionally, and come back ready to lay dudes out. We will definitely need V.D. to get his swag on. Kaeptree is already a hot connection.
Agreed.
1. No.
2. I hope so.
Welcome to 2013, the first year since 1987 to have 4 different numbers…
Nice observation!
I don’t think Greg Roman gets any HC position in the NFL. He might be the leading Canidate to take over the HC in Nevada.
I see Osi Umenyiora isn’t interested in coming back to NY. Could SF pick up another Giant player to compliment Aldon in the pass rush for next season? Maybe this one will actually see the field.
He can’t start for us. He is a 4-3 end and we run a base 3-4. He is not an OLB and is too small for a 3-4 DL. Not sure he has declined enough to accept a situational role as a nickel rusher. I’d like to get a guy like that, who has enough in the tank to rush the passer on critical downs and particularly the 4th quarter, when everyone else is tired. Just not sure Osi is ready for that, or that we can gt him within our budget.
He could rotate in at end in standard defenses, and play a lot in our nickel and dime. He’d play more downs than Sopoaga, likely.
I think the 49ers sign a top d-lineman free agent this off-season or the next.
If Roman goes, we will anoint Chryst or bring in a Roman clone. The offense will NOT change. This is the offense Harbaugh wants. Zombie Bo Schembechler is not going to suddenly turn into Zombie Bill Walsh. We’ll have another year of jumbo packages, three tight ends, and lots of run plays. Frustrating at times, for those of us who witnessed the earlier era, but that’s the way it is.
Well designed, successful run plays, with clean blocks are the prettiest things in football, imo. As long as it works, I’m fine to keep it run-heavy. It’s all about winning.
Watching brady throw 50 eight yard passes on quick drops per game isn’t the most exciting thing to watch.
Ah, the Rose Parade is over. Now a lazy day putting the eyeball test on a few of the youngster hopefulls in the bowl games. Spying Centers and DLs and CBs.
Brotha, Happy New Year! What did you drink last night (wine)?
Feliz Ano Nuevo, amigo! We ripped through a Sinskey and a ‘J’ PN. If you like Pinot and your lady likes Sparklers, take a run up to Windsor to J. If you make a Rez at their Bubble Room you can get a relaxed seated tasting with enough paired snacks to be lunch. Super high quality nibbles. Well worth it.
Dinner last night at Cafe La Haye in Sonoma was off the chart. How was your NYE?
Sounds good. It was low key – just bubbly and too much food. I like J but I usually hit the Napa side sparkling houses. But on your recommendation, I’ll try out J once the weather warms up. Stay cool bro.
Hofer
Did you have some of that pollo chicken? :) Happy New Year.
Nick, Happy New Year!
Grant’s clairvoyant moments of 2012:
-Luke Kuechly won’t be a 1st round pick. (He was my preseason DROY pick, the NFL’s leading (#1)- tackler and likely DROY winner.) But I’m sure Grant still feels confident that he is faster than Kuechly, smh.
-Coby Fleener will be the best rookie pass catcher in the NFL. (He wasn’t even the top rookie TE on his own team, third rounder Dwayne Allen was.) I said Justin Blackmon (64 catches, 865 yards, 5 td’s vs. 26 catches, 281 yards and 2 td’s for Fleener) would be the top rookie pass catcher. The most impressive thing about Blackmon’s numbers are that he had Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne throwing to him.
-There is no opt-out clause in Alex Smith’s contract. Even after clarifying this, Grant refused to admit there was an opt-out for the 49ers after one year. It was a very relevant point at the time because the structure of Smith’s deal foreshadowed what was to come, especially after the Manning pursuit, errr, evaluation.
Good times, please pick the Niners to lose the Super Bowl immediately! All joking aside, this blog is the best and I look forward to another year with Grant at the helm.
Yup, we can’t all be right all the time!! LOL
We certainly can’t, lol.
Grant’s stated opinion that Blackmon was over-rated was boldly intriguing. I was guessing Grant might be wrong on that one based upon Jerry Rice’s enthusiastically positive appraisal of Justin.
We all have mixed results in evaluations and game picks, etc. The blowout victory predictions do kind of show a trend though……
; >)
Anybody pick Clemson over LSU? Not me.
No. This Georgia/Neb game is entertaining. Should be more offense to come.
At least he was right about AJ Jenkins – unfortunately.
Yeah, I think the 9ers could have used RRandle. Maybe AJJ will be a late bloomer?
It has yet to be determine if Jenkins is a bust or not, let the guy play a full season or two to admit that.
Nick,
Writing off a kid who has been active for 3 games as a bust is crazy. He’s done nothing to warrant people disparaging him other than being 6th on the depth chart behind a deep group of WR’s for most of the season. A few weeks ago many were saying the same BS about LMJ and now look at what’s happening when he’s had to step up and play. You folks have to have some patience and look at this with some common sense. He didn’t play because they didn’t need him until now due to the injuries. He’s going to be fine, but give him a chance to actually play a few games before deciding on the future of his career.
I always said Crabtree was going to be a beast when he got a QB that enabled his routes to develop, I also think that Jenkins will turn out to be a good reliable fast wide receiver. He will contribute in the playoffs.
Crabs has stepped up big time although we saw that start to happen last year once he recovered from the foot injury. He has become a big time weapon. Now if only we could get VD involved again we would really be in good shape.
Bayarea, still cant let the Alex Smith thing go can you? The guy is not even playing and you are still insulting him. Unreal.
Funny stuff BigP. No we can’t be right all of the time. And some of us are never right at all lol.
“And some of us are never right at all lol.”
Bay, you are too humble, you were correct twice during the season! LOL Happy New Year and go 9ers!!!
Just poking at you Hof. Hope you had a fun time bringing in the new year…
Go Niners….
BigP,
He also said Stephen Hill was the best WR in the draft and would be a top ten pick. Josh Johnson would sign with another team right away after he was cut and be a really good QB. I’m sure there are many others but hey that is the thing I like about Grant. He is not afraid to have an opinion and state it, although I have told him he needs to back off the absolutes.
I’m sure everybody here has a laundry list of predictions that don’t look so good anymore.
Rocket,
We all have our bad predictions. It’s all in fun. His habit of speaking in absolutes is what makes it fun to poke fun at him, and Grant has always had a good spirit about it. I can get Niner news anywhere, but this place is kind of like a family, albeit a dysfunctional one. It’s full of characters, opinions, Smith zealots, Smith haters, Kaepers, Crabbers, Cowboys and Cohn men. It’s the best fan spot for the initiated, and a savage, barb flinging saloon for Niner newbies. I love spending time with my fellow Niner fans during the week and on game days. Super Bowl or bust!!!!!!! Who’s got it better than us?!?!?!?!?!?
BigP,
Agreed. Dysfunctional or not, it’s always interesting around here.
Happy 2013 and yes lets hope for #6 in the Big Easy.
It would be interesting for the blog family here to come clean on our predictions that did not come fruition.
Here’s mine.
First the BAD:
1. Alex Smith – Pro-Bowl (Arrrrgggh!, really wiffed on that one)
2. CK7 needing 1-3 more years of refining before starting.
3. Dave Akers having another Pro-Bowl season (ouch!)
The GOOD:
1. The defense would have a slight drop-off.
2. Aldon Smith would become a fixture at the Pro-Bowl.
3. Michael Crabtree would again lead the team in receptions.
I second the great Hofe’s comment: “We can’t all be right all the time.” (lol)
Totally agree Big P.
I especially love how this blog stayed alive and interesting last off-season when so many others were virtually closed down. I need my 49ers community even after the season is over.
You guys rock!
Nothing we didn’t already know.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/matt-maiocco/cundiff-medlock-will-try-out-49ers
BTW, Happy New Year to all of you. Lets remember that we are all very fortunate to have our health first and foremost.
Lets also remember that we are fortunate to have a football team that is competitive again and a great blog in which to share our teams highs and lows….
Tom Gamble, director of player personnel, is likely gone. He’ll be given GM position somewhere, maybe in Jacksonville, KC, Jets, or perhaps Cleveland.
How much of a loss is this to the 49ers? I also heard he might take Tomsula with him.
Going to the Jets would be horrible, you have ego maniac Rex Ryan as a lame duck coach, you got the worst QB in the league and they are 36 million over the cap. Most Gm’s would like to bring to hire their own head coach, stupid move.
Damn! Neal,
I would have lost a bet with myself that I would not agree with you twice in a year… this is the second time….also it IS about FOOTBALL!
Happy New Year everyone…
OREG,
HAHAH Well what was the first thing you agree with me? I can be surprising.
angus,
Gamble’s role with the Niners is scouting other teams and leagues for potential FA’s who might fit with the Niners. It would be a loss obviously, but not a huge one imo. Baalke is the key guy and will find someone competent to fill Gambles job if he moves on.
He can’t take Coaches who are under contract unless it’s for a HC position.
Happy New Year everyone
Even to you Smith heads, let’s make it a great year with a 6th Lombardi trophy. Anyway going to spend time with wife and my amusing and entertainning son number two 14 year old. Going to be Niner free this afternoon, which many, well maybe 3 or 4 will celebrate.
Neal
Have fun with the family. Go Niners. Happy new year,

“Bayarea, still cant let the Alex Smith thing go can you? The guy is not even playing and you are still insulting him. Unreal.”
@FDM
Welcome back, long time no-see. Was it you that stated that you would not Crabtree by name (only #15) until he proved himself?
Thanks AES but I will admit I was a little skeptical about Crabtree and I think for good reason considering his production since being drafted. There seems to be a problem on here with doubting players but any Niner fan had to be with Crabtree. Now I think his production is based on being healthy. He looks stronger, runs with authority and seems more comfortable both with Alex and now Kaepernick.
As for your question, did I say I would refer to him as #15? I dont remember but I love the guy, just was concerned about his productivity as a # 1 WR.
FDM,
All good bud. M.Crabtree has made some big catches this season, and his YAC has been a refreshing addition to his game.
Like you, I’m glad to him play at a high level regardless of who his QB is.
Now we need another spark on offense via Jenkins, LMJ or Vernon. Our offense right now looks to be one dimensional and I think for us to make a solid run one of those three guys really needs to step up and elevate their games.
No worries about the defense and coaching as they will be ready. Its our ability to start fast and get production outside of Crabtree and Gore that concerns me.
Yes AES,
there are hypocrites on this blog. And yes FDM said he wouldn’t call him by his name until he earned it.
We now have a big enough sample size to know that Crabs is roughly 30% more productive with the current QB than his old one. Lets you know the issue was not with #15.
Or maybe he is finally healthy? But again according to some, Alex was and is still is the driving force behind all the 49ers inefficiencies, well according to Bay that is.
Bay,
At the moment, I’m just happy that we are in the playoffs, and that the Mayan calendar gave us enough of a reprieve to see our 49ers play on through to the Superbowl (lol).
All good bud.
King hater still can’t stop talking about Alex while he tells everyone else to move on from the backup. Infatuation or what!
Prime I’m not sure what it is but whatever it is, its irregualar.
Smh.
Crabs being healthy is the main reason why he is having a great year, plus another year of experience, and Kaep threw some balls to Crabs, that were dead on, as JH said today.
Crabtree 16 game projection for this year with AS
907 yards 7 TD while averaging 4.87 catches per game
Crabtree 16 game projection for this year with CK
1360 yards 11 TD’s while averaging 5.86 catches per game.
Not bad for a guy that most said couldn’t get separation and they were calling him Craptree.
not *call* Crabtree

“+1 John David Crow, Leo Nomellini, Dave Parks, to add a couple of more to your list.”
@Undercenter
Easy bud, we’re giving away our age. In some places our age demographic are being pushed out (lol).
Those were the 49ers I grew up with and the players that seemed bigger than life to me. It was a great time growing up and watching those guys.
I saw the hit Kermit Alexander put on the great Gale Sayers that essentially (sadly) ended his career.
Dave Wilcox used to be our Pro-Bowler in those lean years.
I watch the game in which Tommy Hart and Cedric Hardman each had 6 sacks apiece against the (Los Angeles) Rams.
I was at the game at Kezar Stadium when Ken Willard (slow afoot) zig-zagged his way for about a 70 yrd TD run.
Loved how Gene Washington had a knack for getting open for a pass from John Brodie.
Those guys were my hero’s even if they never won a
Championship/Superbowl.
I’m proud to be a 49ers faithful!
Skip Vanderbundt, Frank Nunley,(fudgehammer), Ed Beard, Charley and Rolf Kruger, ….and then we go to the offense….
And what about the guy with world class speed and hands of stones; Clifton McNeil!
I believe my first ever curse words were uttered at seeing McNeil consistently dropping wide open passes from Brodie after beating defenders by about 10 yards downfield (lol).
BTW, I was wrong about Dave Wilcox being our only Pro-Bowler. Jimmy Johnson was also a Pro-Bowler in that era. Jimmy Johnson was a great player.
Off topic, but it made me laugh. It looks like ol’ Double J is getting antsy:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/02/jerry-jones-says-changes-are-coming/
Claude,
Caught the J.Jones comments early this morning. Jones’ penchent for keeping T.Romo onboard may be his achilles heels.
Romo reminds me of Warren Moon. WM always posted good-great seasonal numbers, but seemed to be snake-bitten in the big games.
Jerry Jones will succeed when he removes himself from the picture and cut the umbilical cord tied to T.Romo.
*heel
From NFL.com Kind of interesting.
“The six AFC playoff quarterbacks have 51 combined playoff starts among them, with 30 postseason wins. The six NFC playoff quarterbacks have nine combined playoff starts (six by Aaron Rodgers) with only four wins (all by Rodgers).”
