Roman on his play calling against the Rams: “If we win the game, I generally think it’s good.”

SANTA CLARA — Greg Roman spoke in the 49ers media tent Thursday afternoon. Here is what he said about his play calling against the Rams on Sunday, courtesy of the 49ers.

After the game and Monday and yesterday, head coach Jim Harbaugh talked a lot about the playcalls toward the end. How much second guessing do you do of yourself for those calls, the pitch in particular and just in the way that was handled before the Akers field goal at the end of regulation?

“You go back and you look at every call and you judge your intent relative to who you’re asking to do what. You assess that decision and one thing is, when plays work, you generally say that was a good decision. When they’re not executed or they don’t work for whatever reason, hey maybe we should have done something else. In that case, there was too many moving parts for that situation, certainly when it was called the result was not what we expected. It’s just something you measure, you try to learn from and you move on, if it doesn’t work.”

Looking back on it, the pitch, what are your thoughts on that particular play call and the risk-reward at that point in the game?

“I’m not going to get into the X’s and O’s aspects of it, I’ll just say the result was not the intent of the play call. I always look back and say, did it work or didn’t it work? Why, why not? And then move on from there.”

How do you assess your overall play calling against the Rams?

“If we win the game, I generally think it’s good. If we don’t, it’s got to be better. That’s just how I look at it.”

How have the penalties complicated the play calling?

“It’s not about play calling. It’s about execution, ultimately, on the field. That’s something that we’ve got to get a lasso around real quick. 49er football is smart, tough, opportunistic football and penalties certainly don’t fit into that equation. We just had too many of them, some of them we personally didn’t agree with and are just looking for some explanation on and hopefully we can learn from that and move on.”

I’m sure you want another pitch question. Since you’ve been here, in part because the way that play turned out, I don’t think that any single play call has gotten so much scrutiny, criticism and what not. Do you look at that as just part of the hazards of your job?

“Yeah, I mean any play you call, bad things can happen. And good things can happen, great things can happen. You see the gamut of them as you do what we do. We take a lot of pride in putting our players in a position to succeed and when they don’t work out, for whatever reason, criticism comes with it. We love our fans, want to give them wins and one of the reasons why the NFL is so popular is because everybody’s got an opinion, everybody’s got passion for it and it’s one of the great reasons you’re part of the NFL.”

The next day in Washington, the Redskins used the option quite a bit against the Giants on national television, very effectively. Do you see that being part of the future of the NFL, sort of this ability to do lots of things, including the option?

“I do. Felt that way for a while and I do think it does have a role relative to who you’re playing with. I can remember Pittsburgh ran an option play against the Packers in the Super Bowl a couple years ago. It’s in a lot of peoples play books. Some people feature it more than others, but those kinds of plays put a lot of pressure on a defense. Again, it all comes down to execution.”

  1. bumpkin says:

Roman is delusional if he thinks the play calling was remotely “good”.

  2. Coffee's for closers says:

The only thing that makes a play dangerous to call are the players running it. Roman, given Colin’s past and recent performance had every reason to have confidence in calling the option play for Colin in that situation. That play is a high percentage play for the team and the person running it so why would Roman have any hesitation running it and when the play clearly fails because of player error why would Roman be the one questioned on the call? Colin why did you f**k up that play, why didn’t you keep it instead? Those are the right questions to ask.

Harbaugh taking the blame might have seemed accountable but what he was really trying to do was take heat of Colin and save himself having to defend him and his decision to play him.

    • msclemons67 says:

Harbaugh has never thrown a player under the bus. Why do you expect him to start with Colin?

      • Ed from AZ says:

Never?? Really?? Not even a guy who was a top 10 QB who he benched for a guy to earn his bumps and bruises in December with the division on the line?

Oh I Guess he hasn’t thrown anyone under the bus…

      • ribico says:

As the haters like to say about Harbaugh, actions speak louder than words.

      • Msclemons67 says:

Haha Rib – good point. But even while Harbaugh’s actions have thrown Alex under the bus his words about Alex have been positive.

Apparently Harbaugh isn’t as dumb as Nolan or Singletary. 1.5 years of excuses was enough for him.

  3. bumpkin says:

What about running 20 consecutive failed running plays – for essentially no gain?

  4. Hoferfan67 says:

The point is where is the explosiveness the last three games? I don’t see the big plays yet the turnovers are starting to mount.

    • AES* says:

I saw it (explosiveness) in the Bears game. I saw it early in the season against the Jets. The fact that we can even use the action-verb ‘explosive’ when speaking of the 49er offense is refreshing to me.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of CK, whether he is explosive or not. I really don’t care if he becomes a good ‘game manager’ as long as he can avoid the mistakes of last Sunday and improve from game to game.

My take on CK is that ‘explosiveness’ is what he is cabable of, but not what he has to do to win each game.

As I said earlier, if Harbaugh feels like ‘CK played like a winning QB,’ *and he said this on a subpar performance. Then I have to defer to the head coach’s knowledge and decision that CK is our starting QB.

      • DS94everXev says:

And in his one play vs. Seattle he was blown up by a 300lb DE. Then in Buffalo he fumbles the ball. Lucky for him our D got it back and AS threw a dart to MC for a TD.

The kid isn’t ready. Not even close. The Bears game was it. Face it. The Bears stank that night. You could have been the QB AES and we still would have won. WR’s were wide open. The Bears OL was the worse I’ve ever seen outside of SF. Aldon killed them. My boy T. Brown got an Interception. Gore two or 3 times smashed the hell out of the blitzing LB throwing him backwards. I

t was a great night. Everything went perfect. Fact is football games are rarely like that. And last week the D threw a shutout for 59:30 and CK still couldn’t win against the lowly Rams. Who had won 1 of their previous 6 games. So they were hardly some juggernaut on a roll.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        DS,
are you still in denial? Seattle where Smith threw for 140? And threw a pick? And was 3-11 on 3rd downs? 27% 3rd downs lol.
ALL THOSE STATS ARE WHY HE LOST HIS JOB.

    • Jack Hammer says:

“The point is where is the explosiveness the last three games?”

The 49ers have 13 passes of 20+ yards in the last 3 games compared to 22 in the first 8, an increase of nearly 2 per game.

“I don’t see the big plays yet the turnovers are starting to mount.”

A total of 2 offensive turnovers in 3 games leads you to state that they are mounting? How did you feels about the 3 in one game against the Giants?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Jack

How many big runs by Gore in that time? Or Hunter?

We are a running team Jack. With AS in there we were #1 rushing by a mile. Last week, we lost that lead. AS called the right plays at the LOS so that the OL opened up huge holes for Gore. Ever since CK has been in there, our OL suddenly can’t open up the huge holes anymore. And that is just coincidence?

We aren’t balanced anymore. And keep in mind CK has another 2 quarters in OT to pad those stats. Had he done his job during regulation we win those games and his stats aren’t so impressive.

As a big time passing team we suck. Simple as that. As a big time running team, nobody wanted to play us in the playoffs. I bet that feeling has leasoned some with CK in there now. We aren’t a power team who imposes our will on other teams. That is what made us unique. Different. Better than everybody else. We’ve lost that now. We are more like every other team, but not as good.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, how many points did those turnovers account for?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        6 Hofer

      • Prime Time says:

Our identity is fading faster than a hater’s intelligence. We are morphing into a undisciplined team that’s trying to become different than what it was at 6-2-1.
Why? Cause our coaches brain farted and now he cannot see through himself!

  5. AES* says:

You never know that 20 runs will fail until after the fact.
Every play call whether run or pass is planned and designed with the intent to work. They didn’t work in the Rams game. It happens in football.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      AES,

You are now considered a fence sitter. You called out AS’s mistakes this year, but tend to dismiss CK’s mistakes as a learning curve. Shame on you. Whatever happened to my blog bud from 2009, 2010, and 2011? LOL

      • msclemons67 says:

A second year player is expected to have a learning curve.

An eight year player is not.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Put PM or TB through what AS went through and it would be the same. Bad FO and HCs are player killers.

      • DS94everXev says:

Put TB through what AS went thru and the NFL rules would have been changed to flag football.

      • AES* says:

Hofe, I don’t care what label you place on me (lol).

But if you don’t mind humoring me; what part of me calling CK’ bad mistakes “bone-headed” do you find dismssing them as a learning curve?

How do you interpret CK’ mistakes?

Not once have I made an excuse for the bad plays by CK.
I said that DW missed a sure (winning) TD. How do you interpret that?
I said that Akers missed a FG (which is within his range) that could have won the game. How do you interpret that?

I never used those facts as an excuse to give CK a pass.

You on the other hand, have made excuse after excuse for Alex Smith more than anyone on this blog.
You are now, and have always been a Smither. But hey, who cares about labels? (lol)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Thanks AES. You know I respect you opinion. I always have. If CK doesn’t make those mistakes, the DW missed pass doesn’t matter. He’s go to get better before I’m all in. The jury is still out but not definitive yet.

      • msclemons67 says:

        And right on cue, excuses.

    • Wilson says:

AES wrote, “You never know that 20 runs will fail until after the fact.”

Do you think he should have figured it out after the first 10? 15? 19?

It’s interesting that certain people – in fact a majority – have poor senses of strategy and decision making when it comes to selecting plays to fit a given situation. Unfortunately, many fans are in that category, and defend the indefensible. Even more unfortunately, Greg Roman appears to be in the category – and I’m not sure that Jim Harbaugh, who is a great coach otherwise – isn’t.

      • AES* says:

        Wilson, good points.
But you fail to take into account that the majority of the ‘failed runs’ were called when we were in the lead thereby nullifying the urgency to pass.

The game did not fall apart until the 4th quarter so up until that point, trying to work the clock by using the run was not the worse strategy.

In football as we all know, sometimes your game plan works, and sometimes it’s thrown back in your face. Perhaps it’s fair to give a little credit to the Rams defense in this case.

  6. larry says:

Whine, whine ,whine…so sick of most of you guys on this blog…..seems every week you find one or two players or coaches to blame… I always thought football was a team sport. This whole thing went sideways when we screwed around with the QB position. I love the way most of you blamed AS. blame him for a 13-3 season last year….for a 7-2 season this year ? Come on guys, this is a good football team that needs to right the ship….AS needs to be put back in !!! I can see CK in the future but for now he needs some polishing. Although I think AS may need a shrink after the mind games that have been played on him !

    • bayareafanatic says:

      6-2-1 Dumb Azz…..

      • larry says:

See what I mean ?? A bunch name calling idiots on here.

      • DS94everXev says:

He’s been here a long time Larry. And he shouldn’t be.

I’ve witnessed a ton of times on here where everything is fine. People of differing opinions are discussing football, then bay shows up and ruins the experience with his name calling. Both as a participant of the blog and a reader of it. Don’t feel bad Larry. It’s the norm here.

      • Prime Time says:

Larry he is a clown pure and simple. He hates the fact he cannot contribute to a football conversation because he does not know the game. But fantasy football, dude is an expert!

      • Grimey9er says:

You guys are funny. This post and responses are hilarious. First Larry complains about whining then starts whining about the QB situation. Then he complains about name calling while calling names. Pot meet kettle. At least you have the usual suspects backing you up.

      • DS94everXev says:

        grimey

Where are the insults directed at others by Larry? And it is a blog. Whining is the norm. It’s always been like that here.

      • Grimey9er says:

        “name calling idiots”

And yes whining is the norm and complaining about it and doing it in the same paragraph is funny. That’s why I said it was funny.

I don’t know which is funnier though doing it on purpose or by accident.

      • DS94everXev says:

It wasn’t directed at anybody though. And I’ve basically read just about every regular more or less say that at one point or another.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Ok everyone gets a nickname.
        LARRY- SENSITIVE

        Too soft Lameareafanatic!

    • AES* says:

      Larry,
Respectfully, let’s see what happens this weekend before ‘putting AS back in.’

If CK craps in his pants for most of the game (not a few mistakes), then you have a good gripe.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Drama is your world!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

*drama is you world meant for Bay in the comment below*

      • larry says:

I threw the word Idiot in there just to see if you were actually reading this and thinking it through….lol and as far as whining I am not whining….I just think AS got a raw deal here…we shall see how the season turns out ? Tell me in 1 sentence what AS did to lose his starting position ?

      • DS94everXev says:

        larry

He told his coach he wasn’t feeling right. And that is the most worrisome part of this whole debacle. Dismiss the AS vs. CK thing for the moment.

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Larry,

        “He’s not batter than Kaepernick!”

Now, o think that’s one sentence.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Thanks Larry for calling it straight. Don’t let these biased folks sway you. Point on!

    • msclemons67 says:

Nobody has blamed Alex in three weeks. Because, you know, he got benched for a better player.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Clem,

Do you have a problem with 20-5-1?

      • angusinCanada says:

Kaep may very well be better clem, but we haven’t seen it yet. I’d say he hasn’t performed much better or worse than Smith.

      • Prime Time says:

Canada, the inexperience and pressure playing for a Super Bowl contender is showing. Did you see how quint CK has become with the media? He is not loose, he is nervous as his play has shown.
I know I know time will make him better. So that means forget a SB this year, lets plan for 2013. SMH!

      • angusinCanada says:

        Keep the faith Prime,
He has a good game against Miami, everyone will be ranking him up there with Luck and RGIII again. I think he’ll be fine. He must have really impressed the coaching staff for them to make the switch.

      • DS94everXev says:

        That would be expected Prime.

      • Prime Time says:

Canada the coaching staff are impressed and so am I with all the physical talent. He will look good against MIA but after that we will see the inexperience and pressure of a kid not ready to lead against quality teams.
I don’t dislike CK, I just think the timing of inserting him will hurt us. It already has.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Angus

He’s impressed them in practice I’m sure. But NFL game speed is faster than practice speed. And it gets even faster in the playoffs.

The fact he can’t get regular season speed is worrisome because this teams real season starts in the postseason. And with the loss on Sunday, it now isn’t so hard to see how Seattle wins the division and we get a wildcard game. We lose one game + a loss in Seattle and Seattle wins out, we’re not division champs.

      • msclemons67 says:

        “Hoferfan67 says:

        Clem,

Do you have a problem with 20-5-1?”

Nope. Harbaugh has a great record. That’s why I’m comfortable with him switching to a superior player.

  7. 55Niner says:

Win or not, predictability on offense isn’t good….

    • DS94everXev says:

      55Niner

With AS in there, I knew more than not that it was going to be a running play. It just happened to work pretty much all the time. And when he passed it, that worked well too. We also hardly ever passed in the 2nd half so AS’s stats were more like halftime stats.

With CK in there, no holes are opening up for Gore. And teams will take away the deep pass. Even at the expense of leaving the short ones open repeatedly because they don’t fear CK marching down the field on them.

The Rams left that stupid slant play open all game long. The DB was like 10 yards off. And at the end of the day CK didn’t make the Rams pay for it. Only 1 TD and 2 FG’s, any defense will be willing to give that up.

  8. undercenter says:

Our offense in last two games has mustered up 30 points, Thats not gonna win many games.

  9. bayareafanatic says:

Speaking of being wrong. Man was anyone that questioned Payton Manning
(you guys know who you are) YOU WERE WRONG. Payton Manning is getting stronger as the season goes on. He has average receivers playing high level football.
The dude still moves in the pocket and escapes like he’s Houdini. Accurate like no ones business.
Can make all the throws. Guess he’s healed. I for one still wish we would have gotten him. I think he can play at this level for two more years after this one.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Get over it. Enough drama! CK is our new QB and he will be under the microscope the rest of the year. Not his doing but the timing was very poor. Let’s hope he can play mistake free football her on out. Right Bay!

    • Grimey9er says:

He just got picked by Philip Adams. I still like that kid.

I would have liked to see him in a 9ers uni but I don’t think it would work with him and Harbaugh.

    • JDilla says:

average receivers? demarious thomas is a beast, and eric decker ain’t no slouch. Peyton looks good though.

      • angusinCanada says:

The only thing the Broncos were missing was a QB. They’re a complete team, and have a great shot to be the team we demolish in the Superbowl!

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I didn’t want Manning, and I’m glad we don’t have him now. Sure, he’s lights out during the season. Has been for almost his whole career. Post season? Not so much… Let’s see if he can win one this year.

    • BOS49er says:

      Bay
I was one of those guys. And I believe im still right. U always said “our window to win a SB is closing” and by getting PM it would have reinforced that notion. As good as we could have been this year with a 19 mil a year PM we would not have resigned CR Brooks and could not have extended Bowman. that would have ment that our window was trully that of PM. We didnt mortgage our future for a shot this year or the next. NOW we have a bright outlook for the next 5-8 years. A MUCH WIDER WINDOW.

Cant deny PM is great but u also cant deny that he is 36 and coming off 4 surgeries so he has 3 years left tops

  10. 5253 says:

I’m looking for Roman to get our Tight Ends heavily involved against Miami. The Dolphins have given up pretty big numbers to opposing TEs; they don’t have the OLBs/safeties to match up in coverage. This allows us to successfully pass from 21, jumbo, run heavy formations. Expecting a strong game from VD and hope that DW uses this opportunity to redeem himself. Also feeling good about our D vs Tannehill and think Martin and Incognito are going struggle vs the Smiths.

  11. DS94everXev says:

Last weekend before the game I brought up how the AS concussion situation was a concern. Many here thought I was delirious.

Well not so much so whereby Matt Barrows doesn’t have an article about it.

    http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2012/12/goodell-discusses—-sort-of—-alex-smiths-concussion-ramifications.html

A few people here owe me an apology. Not that I’d expect people to have good manners here.

    • Grimey9er says:

“Not that I’d expect people to have good manners here”

Just for that I’m canceling the surprise party.

    • 23jordan/ says:

      BS,

Is that what’s wrong with you. ever reported the concussion huh? Still suffering the effects. Never got cleared. Yeah, that’s BS!

    • 23jordan/ says:

BS is definitely a female. What man would ask other men for an apology, other than prime, and we know what he is! Lol.

    • BOS49er says:

      DS
We had a nice discussion about this that had to be put on hold because the game started on sunday.
We both agree that Concussions are a serious matter.
Where we seem to disagre is on the message that AS situation sent to other players and young kids.
This issue is 2 fold as I see it.
      1) player safety as it pretains to concussions
      2) should a player loose his job to injury and what mesage that sends.

      1) Godells point is that he must protect the shield from accusations that the nfl doesnt care about player safety. the 4k or so ex players are claiming that the nfl never told them that concussions lead to brain trauma. Well NOW godell is telling them that. By instiling a protocol he is changing the attitude to “walk it off” thus defending the shield against accusations of witholding info. By forcing people with Conc to miss game time he is pre empting those same people from saying “well i didnt know” 15 years down the line. If cavemen like romonawski say that AS should have played with his conc because romo played with his thats the type of mindset godell is trying to change.

      2) If Alex had a rib injury(instead of a concussion) and missed 3 games in which CK dominated and as a result AS lost his starting job that would be life in the nfl. So AS didnt loose his job JUST BECAUSE he reported his concussion. Note that RGIII and Cutler didnt loose their jobs after concussions (this year) and neither did A.Rogers in 2010 when Flynn filled in for him. That is most likely because those players had backups that were not as good as the situation here in SF.

You can lead a horse to water but u cant make him drink.
If players know the consequences of hiding their concussion and still chose to hide them there is nothing that anyone anywhere can do. Its like smoking tobacco. We know its harmfull, In MA u cant smoke in bars, public buildings , schools not even in front of them. u have to go 500 ft and stand in the cold. AND PEOPLE STILL DO IT.

U cant legislate or regulate it. If a player decides that its worth risking later life brain damage to play through a concussion and not risk loosing his playing spot THATS HIS RIGHT. THIS IS AMERICA where u or I cant tell a grown man what to do about his own health. All godell is doing is making sure that same player doesnt come back and sue the NFL claiming “well i never knew those were the consecuences”

    • DS94everXev says:

      +1 undercenter

Funny how the blog doesn’t discuss that much. Or the play by T. Brown. He’s shutting down everybody this year. Only a perfect pass or great catch is getting done with him in coverage.

I wish Grant would give that guy some more love. But our OL has been quite good for much of the year.

  13. rubberbandman84 says:

Its funny that AS was the one with the concussion, but it was Harbaugh that suffered most the brain damage from the injury. There we’re maybe one out of twenty coaches that given the same scenario would of started Kaep over Smith under the same circumstances. Harbaugh’s a gambler…it better pay off. The problem is for that to happen Kaep is going to have to take us to at least as far as Alex did in the playoffs. I know it’s hard to question a coach who has won everywhere he’s been, turned college programs around it seemed overnight. On top of that, takes the 49ers from a dog of a team…within a whisper of the superbowl. With that said “how can we question his decision this “? it’s hard not to believe he is making the right choice with Kaep…However, if this is such the right choice for the 49ers…then, why does it feel so wrong? Harbaugh has boxed himself in with the way he went about manging this QB fiasco. My best guess, there’s a 50-50 chance this blows up in Harbaughs face. Can you imagine the pressure CK must be feeling himself…Kaep’s got to know if he plays poorly it’s going to make Harbaughs life very difficult. If CK can perform under this pressure that Harb’s has loaded him up with and come out smelling like roses…I’ll beleive the guy has what it take. Did Harbaugh make what might be his first bad decision with some serious consequences if it all goes sour? At some point every NFL Head Coach does make some sort of big mistake, but can usually recover from ti over time. . The only problem if this one blows up in Harbaughs face…he will be criticized endlessly. Why? What Harbaugh is doing with this late-season switchero with A QB playing so well and by replacing him with an young, inexperienced, almost unproven virtually unknown is unprecedented. There is a fine line between Genuis or fool. You do have to admire the Man (Harbaugh), for his gutsy decision and for having this kind of almost undenying conviction that Colin Kaepernick is not only that good down the road, but also good enough to lead the 49ers to a Superbowl this year. If he can pull this off I will never question him again and start to wonder that there will ever be another Coach his equal.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Nice opening line.

And CK is under that pressure because AS was winning so many games and doing so quite handily. I don’t see CK having won that game in GB to open the season then, or now.

    • JDilla says:

      Lots of good stuff rubber.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

      Rubber,
For me, there’s no way Harbaugh “wins this”, regardless of how far Kaep goes in the playoffs. If Kaep continues to play, I hope everything he touches turns to gold. As for the Coach, I’m really disappointed in the guy. Whether or not it was a good idea, whether or not the timing was right, where is the honor in how Smith was handled?

I became a fan of the Niners back when Eddie D first was owner…and not because they were a great team. They weren’t, at least, not at first. But Eddie established a new standard for how teams treated their players. First team to give the guys their own individual rooms for road games. First team to give the guys and their families vacations after the season. I think they were the first to charter their own plane, so the guys could travel comfortably to and from games, without flying commercial. And Eddie himself was there, offering encouragement, support, and congratulations. In short, there was a feeling that this really was more than just a business, it was a team. That everybody had everybody else’s back.

I recognize that the concept might be hopelessly outdated, but I’d hope the Niners could operate and win with honor. If it’s “Just Win, Baby”, then why the hell aren’t we effin’ Traider fans? The thought makes me sick, because I’ve always, ALWAYS thought the Niners were better than that. But where is the honor in how Smith was handled?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Rusty

Have you seen the posts lately about penalties? How the refs screwed us with this call or not calling that?

        Who does that?

Answer: Raider fans. When you look at their posts in that light, it does make a lot more sense. The haters are Raider fans. Hating just to hate.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Kaepernick replaced Smith halfway through the 2nd quarter of game 9. By the time he starts his first playoff game he will have started nearly half of the season. That is hardly a late season switcheroo as you call it.

    • ribico says:

      >>The only problem if this one blows up in Harbaughs face…he will be criticized endlessly.

rubberm, with help from Grant and other journalists, the blame will be squarely placed at Roman’s feet. QB switch didn’t bring out the promised results? Look for a new OC next year. And that doesn’t bring out the promised results? Then the blame can be made on the 2012 draft, obviously a new GM is needed. And if that switch doesn’t work out…. We’ll look back at the 2011 season with misty fondness.

    • larry says:

My theory is that JH hopes that CK can take the team to the superbowl and if that happens he comes out looking like a genius. That leaves a healthy AS who was having a wonderful year to trade next offseason. Now if he were to play AS this year and he got injured his trade value would be much lower. Huge gamble but we shall see !

  14. undercenter says:

I got one for ya. What is the record for the most passing yards during a drive and most rushing yards during a drive. I would imagine its over a 100 yards for each.

    • TIM says:

Really, come on Under. A “drive” must start on at least the 1 yard line,so the most any drive total could ever be is 99 yards, not OVER 100 yards as you believe. And of course one pass of 99 yards would be a drive of 99 yards, all passing.Same for a 99 yard run.(or any combination of all runs totalling 99 yards. And any combination of all passes totaling 99 yards).

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Tim,

It is quite possible to gain over 100 yards in a single possession, all it would take is a penalty or 2 to move you back, then you pick up the extra yardage. Easy bro.

      • undercenter says:

Tim come on man, Jack is thinking. Are you sipping to much CK?

      • exgolfer says:

        Jack,

While it’s true you could gain over 100 yards on a drive, the length of a drive itself can’t be over 100 yards. This is true because the penalties are just as much part of the drive as the offensive plays.

  15. Crab15 says:

DS says today “C15 You are in La-La Land. I’ve always said stats mean squat. I’ve talked about AS winning games. Read my posts a little more before you spout out any more inaccuracies.”

    DS94everXev says:
    October 31, 2012 at 10:18 am
For those who want to make their case for or against AS, you have this to work with:
“Smith leads the NFL in completion percentage (69.4), ranks fourth in passer rating (102.1), fifth in yards per attempts (7.9) and his 12 touchdowns tie him for 10th with the Giants’ Eli Manning.”
Interesting TD mark. Being tied with EM. Even though Eli throws the ball a bunch more than AS does.

DS – Spout on that! LMAO!!

    • Crab15 says:

DS – You’ve been EXPOSED again! Were your own words inaccurate? LMAO again!
There’s no hiding from this one.

And find the posts where I say AS wins. Add those up. Then add the stats ones up. In case you haven’t noticed people like you complain about AS stats. The post merely points out stats which proves he isn’t bottom or average in.

And what do you make of the TD remark?

I’ve always focused on wins and turnovers. Everybody knows that…except for you and others who namecall all the time. Please read my posts before making such remarks.

While checking that out, why dont you tell houston AS has good YPA?

That was the worst game I’ve witnessed. Only 1 TD. CK had better get better. Or he’ll be watching the playoffs from his TV set like the rest of us.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        DS,

Then be glad you missed the Raider game in ’88 when Joe could only put up 3 at home in a 9-3 loss. That was a terrible game too.

  18. The Grinch says:

I swear I have never seen a cult following like the Alex Smith one..Alex is a good guy and an average qb..He plays scared.Probably effects of the bs he was put through early in his career. He is very smart at reading defenses but hes to smart,he overthinks things. He has terrible pocket presence often running from a rush that is not there. He has no downfield passing ability and well never through to a reciever that is covered one on one.I have personally hated Smith since midway through his second season..Even with a terrible supporting cast it was pretty obvious he doesnt have “it”…If Alex was the answer why has he caused so much conflict on blogs and with head coaches the last seven years? He has lost his job already several times to guys who arent in the league anymore. And yes Alex has had some great moments but never on a consistant basis and I was so sick of watching him leave big plays on the field for so many years..As a Niner fan personally I have so badly been wanting for him to be gone for so long yet every year we go through this

    issues wit

h him..Im sorry but the day he is not in a 49ers uniform will be

one of the happiest days for me as a Niner fan..athis guy feels like a huge anchor on this franchise and he just aont go away..I really believe M Sanchez or M Cassel could have tooken this team

    • bayareafanatic says:

They are a group of misfits. They associate with the average underdog. And once just once they want to see “their guy” win.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Bay,

We don’t agree with the move this late in the season. It has never been done for a reason. They are still debating it on NFL net as well as in print, and they disagree with the move. JH dropped the playoffs in CK’s lap and if they go far, they’re brilliant. If not, it’s wait til next year yet again.

BTW, you said the exact same thing in your comment dated 11/19. Now you berate others for agreeing with you. pfft.

      • ninermd says:

Hoff it was done for a reason. Just not a reason you see fit. The reason was Harbaugh knows ck is a better option. And the move wasn’t made late in the season. A little over halfway. Hoff I’m disappointed. I thought of all the smith apologists. You would be all in with any decision Harbaugh made.

And speaking of the media. There are ex players and coaches who agree with Harbaugh also.
Get on board Hoff. The smith era is over brotha. It’s a new era and the 49ers are going to be greater than last season.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Hofer,
who is “we” and who are “they”?
Fabricated larger groups to add strength to your argument?
Like MD said, we are currently in first place. The Smith era is over. Move on and support your team. More than one time you’ve said “I’ll support this team no matter who is QB”. Based on that statement, right now you and a whole bunch of your friends that had made the same statement are liars.

      • FDM says:

Bay you have to admit this move by JH, no matter how much we trust him, or how great all his moves have worked out, still deserves some doubt.
Not only because what Hof said that it has never been done before and its late in the season, but also, the way CK’s progress has declined, not elevated with each game.
For years you have been doubtful with Smith, citing his plays and numbers. Now whats wrong with other fans doing the same with CK?

      • txtree49er says:

        FDM

Because bay thinks he is the only Forty Niner fan, and that if you do not agree with him you are not a true fan.

        Hypocrisy

      • bayareafanatic says:

        FDM,
we knew there would be bumps in the road. To think he will get better and better each start with no real game experience is crazy.
You can focus on the negative like the Smithers have, or you can focus on the positive.
        1. We thought he couldn’t pass from the pocket. WELL HE CAN. AND HE’S SHOWN BETTER POCKET PRESENCE AND ESCAPABILITY THAN SMITH.
        2. We said he was a running QB. THE WAY HE GOES THROUGH PROGRESSIONS AND STEPS UP IN THE POCKET SURE MAKES HE LOOK LIKE A PASS FIRST QB TO ME.
        3. He’s protecting the ball. He’s upgraded his delivery. He’s mentally tough.
        4. He’s improved the QB yardage production by roughly 50 yards.
        5. He’s improved our 3rd down conversions.

        So FDM,
all of this and yes he will get better. Defenses are throwing different looks at this kid. Doesn’t it make sense that after seeing each defensive look for a 2nd time he will be more decisive in terms of how he attacks it?
My ONLY concern is chemistry. I don’t know how this affects the chemistry. I do know this, winning cures everything. So lets get behind this thing and start winning.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        TXT,
who’s got it better than us?
        NOBODY.

      • Prime Time says:

Tree the haters don’t want to open their eyes to what impact this switch, this late in the season has done and will do. They only care that Smith is not playing.

What we are witnessing is that a Super Bowl expectation has been layed on the lap of an inexperienced QB. Throw in the fact he is making critical mistakes, the thought is he will learn and we will be fine.
It’s week 14 and we are reinventing our offense, taking more penalties, showing continuity issues, and now injuries. All things that are difficult to overcome this late in the season.
Harbaugh thought he could win a new way with Kap. What he didn’t realize is that how he was winning was working and that the switch puts the entire team in difficult situation in learning to adapt to a new scheme.

      • FDM says:

Bay, the switch happened too late to overcome all those things. Growing pains are endured through a full season of work. Not the last 6 games of a season. You mentioned how there might be chemistry issues, there are and its costing us more penalties and confusion as what our identity is on offense. We dont look like a running team anymore and we sure as hell do not look like an explosive passing team. So who and what are we offensively?
We basically are starting over and relying on our defense to win us games more so than ever. How did that work on last Sunday? They played their best game all year and the offense layed a couple eggs and gave the Rams the game.

If you see progress in CK’s play then you are being blinded by something. He has looked more confused than ever since the Bears game.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Primescum/welcher,
there are two types of people. Those that don’t like a situation and become resentful over it. Discuss it daily and build anger over it like you. And by the way, how is that working for you? You can’t change the situation. It is what it is.
And there are those like me that acknowledge the time timing of it is a bit puzzling, but it is what it is and we roll with it.
Who looks stupid and who doesn’t. I know I don’t.
It is what it is, Harbaugh who turned Standford into an exciting winning college program came here and turned a perennial loser into a playoff team. He also won NFL coach of the year. So I think I’ll roll with him at this time.
Primescum you are going through Denial, now you are at anger, don’t worry eventually it will turn to acceptance…..

      • bayareafanatic says:

        FDM,
you want to point to the struggling running game and blame it on CK now too?
Wow the Smithers have really shown their true colors. A group that uses excuses whether their man is up or down.
How about taking a look at reality. The running game is struggling because we lost Hunter and because this last game we faced a good defense that manhandled our offensive line.
How is that CK ‘s fault?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, I’ll support the team, but it doesn’t mean I won’t constructively criticize. I don’t have to believe in every move they do, like sitting their 1st and 2nd round draft choices for three fourths of the year.

      • Prime Time says:

First of all Bay, you look stupid anytime you put a thought to key pad so that answers that question.

You blab “Those that don’t like a situation and become resentful over it. Discuss it daily and build anger over it like you. And by the way, how is that working for you?
What have you been doing and saying about Alex hypocrite?

You roll with this decision all you want but keep in mind this decision can limit our chances to win a Super Bowl which was the objective all year. Now that can still happen but for you to say this was the right move, that we will find out.
So in the meantime big mouth, don’t pretend the kid has arrived and everything will work out. The kid has been placed in a difficult spot through a bad decsion by JH. Super Bowl or bust remember! Anything less is a failed season. Your okay with that becaus wins don’t matter, passing yards and points right for your fantasy league correct? Dummy!

    • ninermd says:

Thanks for summing up EVERYTHING I’ve been saying for the past 7 years. But let me warn you. There are excuses for these points and the smith followers will NEVER change their minds. I’d bet when he’s gone they will still bring his name up like he is a 49er legend of some sort. It’s the bleeding heart feel sorry for a guy people. Or they are really dumb or new when it comes to football. Take your pick

    • FDM says:

Bay says “The running game is struggling because we lost Hunter and because this last game we faced a good defense that manhandled our offensive line.
How is that CK ‘s fault?

It is not his fault but was he not brought in to bring the explosive plays down field to create quick strikes to relieve the running game?
How come he has not been able to incorporate the new weopons? Moss and VD have not been factors since CK’s insertion. The passing game has not improved, therefore has put more on the run game. Fault or not, the issue is the reiventing of the offense this late in the season.

  19. The Grinch says:

Sorry phones tweaking..Anyways Alex is a great person and team mate and has alot of charachter for putting up with what he did but I do not want to see this guy as the qb of my favorite team ever again its like a long dragged out divorce you cant move on from..Alex Smith was a mistake hez a career back up and even after all hes been through you would think he would come out and just play like he had nothing to lose but he didnt..Same old scared conservative Alex and lost his job because of it..Goodbye Alex its been a long miserable seven years that really needed to come to an end..Goodluck wherever your destination may be as long as its not SF.

    • AngusinCanada says:

Jack, your page views odometer is gone wacky! You’ve got an extra ’6′ at the bottom.
At any rate, nice summation of the situation. My only area of disagreement with you is that I don’t think we’re going to see any dramatic increase in the deep vertical attack. I think defenses are going to continue to take that away (as they’ve been doing with Smith, and as Fisher did last week to Kaep), forcing the 49ers to matriculate down the field, piece-meal (the bears didn’t do that, and the league saw how that worked out for them, and the saints, well, their terribleness on defense is of historical proportions).

    • drsgrosse says:

Jack: Have you saved your screen shots? If so, can you find anything that would shed some light on why the Niner running backs average 4.0 per carry with Kaep in and 5.6 with smith at QB?

      • AngusinCanada says:

They’re not running as far? :)

      • Ed from AZ says:

@drsgrosse Good question, I’d also like to know what is contributing to that (ie incorrect pre-snap reads, lack of adjustments, or RB’s/OL wearing down toward end of season.)

      • angusinCanada says:

2 reasons – they had a big lead against the bears, ran a lot in the 2nd half and the bears knew it was coming. Also, the rams press the line of scrimmage, rush more than 4, and play a deep zone over the top. This makes it more difficult to run, or to throw it deep.

      • Prime Time says:

So if you cannot do either Canada what is the alternative? Check it down? Well the haters won’t agree cause we were not entertaining enough for this style of football. It won a lot of games, made us unpredictable yet efficient (less penalties) but what does any of that matter. We have potential and a new identity heading into the final stretch of the season.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“shed some light on why the Niner running backs average 4.0 per carry with Kaep in and 5.6″

Not only is the QB production down when teams pass rush with 5 since the change, the RB production is down as well. Hmm.

    • drsgrosse says:

Yes, we have two shots to win the division: @NE and @SEA. If SEA goes 2-0 the next 2 weeks and we go 1-1, the SEA game is for the division.

      • Spaceborn says:

Beating the Dolphins is huge because it is a home game that should be won. A loss to NE, not so much. But you’re right, it then makes the Seattle game a game the 49ers need to win, but is not the only way to win the division. If the 49ers lose, they could still win the division if they beat AZ and Seattle loses to the Rams. The record would be SF 10-5-1 and the Seahawks 10-6 and 49ers win the division by half a game. However, if the Seahawks win out and the 49ers only win two more games the record is 49ers 10-5-1 and the Seahawks would be 11-5 and they win the division. That’s why it would be much better to beat the Dolphins and Patriots first, then a loss to Seattle would still allow the 49ers to win the division by beating AZ and have an 11-4-1 record to Seattle’s 11-5 record.

  21. Razoreater says:

Roman has a propensity for calling a very foolish or head scratching play at the most inopportune times. Other than that, I have no problem with his play calling, but if it continues to happen I would question the head coach as to why he has not instructed Mr. Roman to refrain from calling said plays at these critical times in games.

    • 4theplayers says:

according to Mr Roman. No flies on him… its all about execution. What an ass!

    • AES* says:

Seems the way Razor, but I’m sure that GR is using the element of surprise in the timing of those plays.
Some have worked, some have not. Not every play that is called will work because there are so many factors and layers involved.

A play called can be snuffed out for a number of reasons.
Bad execution by one player can work to the detriment of the play.
Or a defensive player just happens to make a great defensive play.
Point, the margin for success on any given play is not as great as many may think.
