SANTA CLARA — This is what Greg Roman said about Vernon Davis Thursday in the media tent.
Q: What are the common elements defenses are doing to take away TE Vernon Davis? Three catches the last three games total, so what’s going on?
ROMAN: I’m not going to get into the X’s and O’s of things, but every team’s different, every situation’s different. I’d say that they’re paying a lot of attention to him at times. On Kap’s 50-yard run a couple of weeks ago, there was 10 guys. Vernon ran that way and there was 10 guys on that side of the field. So, I think that kind of paints a picture.
Q: Was that an exaggeration?
ROMAN: No exaggeration. Frank cut the last guy.

VD should have a field day against these linebackers.

@ jack nice blog keep em coming!!!
Good work bud. I like the break down Jack. Now I’m all fired up with no game to watch till Sunday night.
There is the Thursday game. Eagle’s fans started booing on Monday. Reid could be fired at halftime. Lot’s of potential entertainment.
Except for the football part. That will probably be bad.
I didn’t see it, but apparently Nick Foles, rookie QB for Philly, was magical in the 4th qtr last week. I’m interested in seeing him.
For a rookie Foles looks decent. But good grief, that team has quit.
The Bengals refuse to take advantage of the quit. Neither team wants to win this game.
I’ve got some action on eagles + 3.5, so you know who I’m cheering for!
I may have prematurely buried the Eagles’ defense.
Good stuff Jack,
I think the numbers (good rush #’s, bad pass #’s) for the NE defense get skewed because teams can’t keep pace with the Brady offense, and have to air it out.
I think they’re vulnerable against the run, and Houston was hitting them with big runs early before they went down by 13 scores early in the 2nd qtr. If the pats don’t key on the run, the 49ers will continually try to run (hopefully with success), which will force the D to come up, and then the big passes can be had. The key is to not let Brady and Co. score at will, thus taking the 49er running game away that way.
Great job Jack!
Jack I noticed those same numbers about the Pats defense and it also struck me that teams probably abandon the run pretty early on due to the pressure to score that NE puts on them. Thus, their run D is not as good as the stats would suggest. So sticking to the run will be key.
I also think that Mid range WR routes in between the coverage should be profitable. The pats, like most teams, will likely highlight VD in coverage, and leave the outside routes in man or soft coverage. Time for CK to man up and make those plays when they are there.
Teddy Bruschi suggested that the Pats will try to force Kap outside the pocket and try to make him throw to WRs on the outside instead of TEs and RBs in the middle.
Personally I’m cool with that. CK is very accurate on the move, obviously very mobile, and has shown the ability to get it to his WRs. This is where the Scramble drill takes effect. WRs need to make the effort to get open after their route is over and the QB is extending the play.
Agreed. I think at this stage in his career he is at his best while on the move. If that is part of the plan, then they should design some plays especially tailored to his rollouts.
