Schefter: Staley upset over Alex Smith’s benching

This is what Adam Schefter just said on Sportscenter.

SCHEFTER: “It’s not just 49ers fans fans who have gotten emotional about the decision to bench Alex Smith and start Colin Kaepernick.

“It turns out that offensive tackle Joe Staley has as well. One day during practice last week when 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh noticed Staley seemed down, he pulled him aside, and the two had a discussion about it.

“Staley explained that Alex Smith is his best friend, somebody he had blocked for throughout his entire career and he was disappointed to see Smith treated the way he was.

“Harbaugh explained why he made the decision that he did to Staley. It’s not that Staley didn’t believe that Kaepernick could do the job, but he felt that strongly about his friendship for Smith and the job that he has done.

“It just goes to show you that there is more emotion involved in a simple decision than to just go with Colin Kaepernick at this point in time.”

Ship him after the season ..

  2. Neal says:

    Staley will get over it.

  3. oldcoach says:

Completely off the subject but it looks like those of us who said the 9ers should’nt sign P Manning were right. If we had PM Kap would’nt be getting his opportunity. who knows how long he would be a backup? who knows wether he would ever have become out starter? Now we have a potentially great QB for 10 to 15 yrs.

  4. 49erPMK says:

One of Staley’s best friends in Adam Snyder was virtually ignored by the 49ers in free agency last year too. I’m guessing Joe will get over it . . . especially if the 49ers keep winning.

  5. RednGold1 says:

Yeah, I got emotional too. I was laughing uncontrollably, then crying uncontrollably. I was dancing in the street, singing something loud, throwing my hands in the air. Even commenting on blogs.
Only I’m on the other side of the qb controversy from Joe Staley.
All the way with Big CK.
    Smiley Face :)

  6. AES says:

Emotions play a huge part in the game. Staley has every right to feel the way he does.

But I also feel that Staley is professional enough not to let it effect his play on the field.

    • Prime Time says:

Yeah what about if others feel the same way? Is everyone as professional as Staley? Staley was upset about it enough to confront JH. That cannot be good when veteran players do that. They obviously don’t believe it was the right way to do it.

      Prime ,

Others know the importance of winning. Staley is emotional like you. You make it seem like the locker room is full of kids. If staley can’t get over it, he can kick rocks along with Smith next year!

  7. Prime Time says:

What you guys don’t understand in a team game is that when the lockerroom has a chance to be divided there is nothing that can stop it for spiralling. Lets hope Staley is an isolated incident.

  8. bayareafanatic says:

Next week did a story on how missed off the receivers are at their lack of. Looks downfield. Get over it. New QB new direction. We will now be set uo to challenge for a superbowl every year.

  9. Coffee's for closers says:

I can see it now, an upset Staley decides to pull an ole block and Kaepernick ends up on the ground lying next to his spleen.

Jim it’s not a good idea to upset your left tackle.

    • hamalanche says:

well the thing is staley is one of the best offensive lineman the niners have, I feel for Alex Smith, he was playing very well when they decided to bench him, we have to remember Kapernick didnt beat the rams last time, Kapernick is a good player and maybe has alot more talent but its not like Smith was ice cold and harming the team, they were winning with him.

  10. bayareafanatic says:

    Stupid phone lol

  11. 23Jordan/ says:

Staley is half the reason Alex is not starting. All the huts and sacks he’s given up this year at the mist in opportune times. Not a ton, but they were critical. Hopefully, he will get over it. After all, he is the starting left tackle!

  12. NinerNation says:

The Smithers Cult on this blog need to to take note from Staley and just suck it up when it comes to backing our new and more talented starting QB. In Harbs we Trust!

  13. Sycophantick Romantick says:

Schefter has difficulty stringing words together in an appreciable way. And where is the meat in that sandwich? Hypo to Staley: “I’m coaching a team here Joe. You in?”

  14. DS94everXev says:

    Yeah

Well maybe JH should have listened to Staley. We’d have won today.

  15. GIVIE says:

I’m sick of hearing how much more talented Kapernick is Alex. He’s a rookie with lots of potential. Let’s see if he is playing 8 years from now. I haven’t seen anything that says he is more than a promising rookie…… a lot like Ryan Leaf and Matt Leinart. They had big guns too!

  16. GIVIE says:

Adam, I hope your right. That would make Kaep real special. Take out the Giants game and Seattle game when AS was nursing a bad hand and look at what his stats would be. Boring football, but winning football.

On another note. LaMichael James will blow you away this next weekend! He is the real deal in the making! But let’s not retire Gore yet.

  17. GIVIE says:

Sorry Adam, that reply was for Neal, I agree with you

  18. Greg says:

How do you feel now that “Big Kap” single handedly blew the Rams game.

He has digressed after each game.
    1. caught the bears sleeping and looked great
    2. Would have lost the game in New Orleanes except for 2 pick sixes.
    3. Gave away 8 points in the rams game.

The most troubling comments after the Rams game was players saying that They always had the perfect defense called.

It is the Quarterbacks job to audible out of those situations to a new play. That skill comes with experiance and Kap doesn’t have it.

lose at NE and Sea and we are a wildcard.
