Should the 49ers bench Carlos Rogers?

Carlos Rogers is having a bad season. He used to be a premier slot corner in the NFL, but he’s 31 years old, he’s lost a step and he can’t keep up with the quick slot receivers anymore.

The 49ers signed Rogers to a four-year, $29.3 million contact in the offseason. On Sunday night, Rogers dropped an easy interception and gave up a touchdown to Doug Baldwin. Rogers has not recorded a “pass defensed” since Week 6.

Pro Football Focus ranks Rogers as the 76th-best cover corner in the NFL this season. They say he’s allowing a 90.9 QB rating – 25 points higher than what he allowed on average last season.

Should the 49ers bench him?

Tarell Brown could cover the slot receivers instead of Rogers. Brown is quicker, and he is the 8th-best cover corner in the NFL this season according to Pro Football Focus. They rank Chris Culliver as the 13th-best cover corner this season, too. Should he take Rogers’ place as the starting left cornerback in the base defense?

Or is it a bad idea to shuffle the starting lineup right before the playoffs?

What would you do if you were Vic Fangio?

  1. Jacka says:

Considering they are in their nickel D the majority of the game it doesn’t matter.

  2. msclemons67 says:

Grant, if you keep cutting all the 49ers you won’t have anyone left to interview.

Rogers is fine. He isn’t a top tier cornerback but he’s better than average.

    • Jay Jay says:

LOL better than average? He has NO hips, No awareness, No speed! Pretty useless if you ask me. I live in DC and skins fans heckle me saying “I told you so” regarding his awful play. Last time he was any good was at Auburn U

    • 23jordan/ says:

ROgers just played last year for a contract. Now he’s Redskin Carlos. Diminishing ball skills, no speed, no hands.

      • msclemons67 says:

I don’t think Carlos is worth the contract he got but he isn’t bad enough to get cut or benched mid-season.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Should they cut him this offseason?

      • msclemons67 says:

Tough question. He’s due $6 million? That’s a lot of salary cap.

      • 23jordan/ says:

Maybe he should restructure that deal or get cut. Just like they did with Nate Clements. Our draft is DL, CB, WR, another DL, another CB, OLB.

      • Justaquestion says:

Is harb, still going to allow Alex to get on field to at least have another 7 throw attempts to be eligible for the highest QB rating crown???

    • msclemons67 says:

Actually $7 million, and the 49ers would take a $4 million cap hit by cutting him. Tough call. If they cut him after June 1 he’d only be a $3 million hit. Still – are there CB’s out there worth $3 million?

      • Grant Cohn says:

They would probably replace him with a draft pick, don’t you think?

Casey Hayward would have been a good pick in retrospect. http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2012/04/inside-the-49ers/the-final-mock-draft/

      • msclemons67 says:

Heck, Janoris Jenkins would have been a nice replacement, eh? Rather than AJ?

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Absolutely.

      • 23jordan/ says:

I’m disappointed that we didn’t take a chance on Jenkins. Despite the issues, he’s a player and our locker room was strong enough to keep him clean. The kid is a real talent. I have to admit, our draft this year won’t be looked upon favorably.

      • Big niner says:

Casey was a good pick but the rest of your 1st round was horrible except for Richardson, lol

      • BOS49er says:

        Jordan
Not neceserily a failure. LMJ in his brief chances to contribute showed that he can make plays at this level, and with a year or two with mr Uyeyama and 10-15 lbs he could be the next generation ray rice or MJD. AJJ is a bit confusing up to this point since we had 2 wr’s go down and he still cant get a sniff of the field but il reserve judgement till he actually plays to see if he was a worthwhile pick. Looney could be a staple at center for 10 years for all we know or he could be out of the league and Fleming got injured so we didnt even get to see him in pads. While its easy to go back in time and say U should have drafted this guy or that guy alot depends on the situation where they landed (scheme, depth, coaches wilingness to play rookies etc.) and the opportunity they got to play

    • IMG says:

I wondered why Baalke & co opened up their purse strings for Carlos at the end of last season. It wasn’t because his play was bad, but it was certainly because of his age.
Sadly, he seems to be proving my concern right.
Anyone knows what the salary cap implications are if we cut him?

  3. LenDeez says:

bench carlos for who? im down with culliver starting over carlos but he is our best option when we go into nickel and id rather him be in the slot then outside so dont have much choice in this regard.

  4. Chris says:

I’m not sure if it would work this late in the season. The whole defense has been inconsistent throughout the year in some games. I want to wait until we see the team in the playoffs fully focused.

  5. bayareafanatic says:

The Prime muzzle…. Buahahaha. Switch to Randy.

  6. fesnyc says:

given that Harbaugh is willing to bench a QB with a 100+ QBR – ie, he has an itchy trigger finger – i think if he/Fangio thought Rogers wasn’t cutting it, he’d be already riding pine. and that day may come. but the Niners D looked pretty good until the 3rd quarter of the NE game. Rogers may not be Eric Wright, but he seems to make a lot of plays in a pass happy league. other teams have talent too, sometimes at WR.

    • Wilson says:

I disagree that Harbaugh has a quick trigger. If Alex hadn’t been hurt, he’d still be our quarterback. Who else has he benched for poor performance? He kept Snyder at RG all last season even though Boone was available. I think Rogers is okay for this year but we definitely need to draft a couple of corners next season and consider cutting Rogers if we find a good one or two and save some cap space. Why didn’t we draft a cornerback in the last draft?

      • fesnyc says:

Alex was healthy after sitting out 1 game, and he’s been healthy since. Harbaugh made the decision to sit a QB having his best year ever. I think he plays the guys he thinks will help him win. So far that’s been Rogers. We’ll see how many snaps he gets sunday.

  7. ninermd says:

He isn’t bad when the pass rush is working. They ALL looked tired and a step behind Seattle on Sunday. The 3rd game curse. Smh

  8. Mike says:

That’s why I wasnt a fan of them giving him a long term deal. They should have made a play for Brandon Carr. Maybe they did…

  9. 23jordan/ says:

    Grant,

Let me apologize in advance for the comment. I was reading Lynch’s blog on SF gate and I was surprised to see all the negative comments toward Kap and mainly JH. Is Harbaugh somehow falling out of favor among fans for his decision on Smith? I always thought there were more Smith fans on this blog than anywhere. All of a sudden, JH is getting nicked a bit by the fans everywhere, not to mention the article from your pops! Lol.

    • msclemons67 says:

Lowell has always been acerbic. That’s his charm. He even called for Montana to be benched before Montana’s greatest game ever.

As for the fans: did you see the Denver blogs after the Broncos picked up Peyton? Certain players get a cult following that has nothing to do with football. ESPN had a poll asking if Kaep was a good move – every state in the nation except Utah said yes.

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Msc,

I saw both of those. I was really surprised at the Broncos blogs. The SF Gate crew certainly does not like the move to Kap.

      • msclemons67 says:

Not surprising really – Alex is a fantastic guy off the field. I’m not a fan and I still feel bad for the dude.

    • BOS49er says:

I never agree with Lowell but his article brought up points that sound very familiar in my parts. The “in ______ I trust” gets cited very often in NE but at least BB won 3 SB and took the team to 2 more. In NO WAY DO I WANT nolan or sing or god forbid ericson back as coach but JH is not infaliable. And the mere mention that he might be gets bristling responses and the calls of “would u rather have nolanterry back etc.”
No one can argue that we dont have some issues that can be directly linked to coaching.
#1 Win 2 loose 1 and so on. Thats a question of motivation/ getting the team ready to play. granted 3 of those losses came to playoff caliber teams but what about the rams games?
#2 Get the play off on time for crissake. We have used 14 timeouts this year in the 1st or 3rd quarters as a direct result of the playclock running down. IDK how many delay of game penalties we’ve had but on waaaay to many occasions our QB (either one mind you) looks like Mark effin sanchez with the fire drill stomping his foot to get the snap off miliseconds before the clock expires
#3 Stagnant Offense at times this season Not as much on JH as on GR but as a HC the buck ultimately stops with him

That said Im glad we have JH as coach and hope to keep him for many years to come. I dont care that he is surly with the media as long as he fixes the issues that ail this team. While not pessimistic im frustrated that we never know which team is going to show up each week and I have to put that on the coaching staff

  10. b4huxley says:

Hmm I was wondering do any of the regular bloggers here read niners nation to, I like reading this blog Lowell Kohn and Grant, though Niners nation has the best audience and crowd, followed by Lowell, Grants blog has the worst audience by far.

    • 23jordan/ says:

      B4,

We’re trendsetters here on this blog. A band of misfits. That Ninernation blog is too blah. Everyone respectfully agrees with each other. Nobody is willing to stick their necks out. This blog has teeth. We’re more diverse. We’re animals and we are more football savvy as well. In addition to all that, we have a guy that posts, but has nothing to say. Read some of Prime Time’s entries. The kid is deep!

  11. Rob says:

Yea, the “last draft.” What a disaster that has turned out to be, one of the worst drafts in 49ers history, especially when compared to what the Seahawks and Rams accomplished in theirs.

    • msclemons67 says:

LMJ looks like he might be pretty good. But yeah, one decent pick in seven rounds is kind of bad.

On the other hand – 2011 was fantastic.

    • RC says:

I don’t see how you can make that statement. History has yet to be written on this past draft.

    • Adam says:

Here’s something I just thought of: One of the trades we made in the last draft was to the Colts. I think Baalke presumed the Colts wouldn’t be all that great and that the 3rd rounder we got from them would be a decent to high pick.

      Not so good.

    • Adam says:

Darius Fleming may be a diamond in the rough. If he can make it through camp next season he might be worth watching.

I question the number 1 pick for sure. When you had Reuben Randall and Alshon Jeffrey still on the board but… meh. Who knows, probably too soon to judge this class. I don’t see it as being as good as the 2011 class but it may turn out all right.

  12. LenDeez says:

la mikes been a good pickup but besides that not a lot of promise going forward

  13. Mr. Everything says:

Niners should absolutely cut Rogers next year, because if they keep him they’ll feel the need to play him, and if they play him, he’ll put out lackluster efforts like he did last week. That was the worst CB performance I’ve seen in a long time. Bench Rogers now. Get Cox and Brock in there and do it yesterday.

Harbaugh’s Niners are having difficulties based on the staff’s stubborn refusal to play to the team’s strengths, play to other teams’ weaknesses, and play the best Niners. Tell us again why LaMike hasn’t been playing, why Ginn has gotten on the field at all, and why Alex played south of this season.

There is no way to accurately judge this season’s draft because the fossilized mainstays (Rogers, Ginn) have been paid too much and they are keeping the young guys (LaMike, AJ)

  14. Rick says:

Did you see how much time Wlson had on most of his completed throws. No corner in the league can cover for ever. The 49ers pass rush was a step slow, and it allowed Wilson to do his Fran Tarkenton impression play after play. A QB running around in circles while winded pass rushers huff and puff chasing him looks cute, but if it was a way to win consistently in the NFL we would have seen a lot more QB’s trying it over the years.

NFL defenses in the 70′s figured out Tarkenton, and NFL defenses today will figure out Wilson.

I still maintain that the Seattle loss should be thrown into the garbage can as an aberration and no major changes need to be made based on that one defeat.

    • Big niner says:

You know, if they’d tackle the waist instead of the hips or shoulders, Wilson wouldn’t have ran like crazy! Go back to fundamentals.

  15. Big niner says:

Put Rodgers on the weaker WR. Put the quicker Brown on the slot. Culliver vs their best WR. Cut Rodgers in the offseason and draft a CB in the mid rounds. Maybe we can find another Culliver there. Sherman was a third round pick I believe that played under JH.
Quick question: How could JH miss drafting Sherman and baldwin?
Are we getting any D line help?

    • rocket says:

Sherman especially seems like a wasted opportunity seeing as though he lasted until the 5th round. I remember seeing him in the Senior Bowl and thinking how good he looked, especially considering he had converted from WR only a season previous. I thought he’d be a guy they’d look at. Baldwin didn’t have superior size or ability so I’m not surprised they didn’t take him although he would have been a better choice than Ron Johnson was. There seems to be a little animosity between these guys and Harbaugh. Maybe they didn’t see eye to eye at Stanford which would explain why Harbaugh didn’t fight to have them drafted. Either way, every team in the league is kicking themselves about passing on Sherman for 4 rounds.

      • BOS49er says:

        Rocket
Could it be because Sherman does not fit the “Mold” at CB. Besides Cromartie there arn’t many good corners taller than 6’2 and the assumption is that they are stiff in the hips (my assumption at least since thats what i cited in an earlier post for not wanting to play cully in the slot)
It seems like Sea doesnt care about the mold when pickin players. BB 6’4 corner Wilson 5’10 at qb

      • rocket says:

Could be Bos, but Harbaugh and Fangio saw him up close and personal for the entire time they were at Stanford (Fangio just for one season admittedly) and were the ones who switched him to CB in the first place so I’m guessing they saw potential in his game. Pete Carrol didn’t have huge CB’s at SC so I’m guessing it was a case of they just liked what they saw in TC from both Sherman and Browner and it just worked out that way.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Rocket

It didn’t “just work out that way” if you’ve read any of Carroll’s recent blurbs. The Seahawks have consciously tried to get HUGE at the CB position. Their intent is to disrupt WRs coming off the line and use team speed across the DL and at LB to disrupt the QBs ability to sit in the pocket and wait for the disrupted WRs to adjust and get open.

This tactic is being employed because 29 of 32 teams pass the ball more often than they run it. It is a defensive adjustment, both tactically and in the scouting department. Without Red Bryant on their DL, the Seahawks would be even more exposed versus the run game than the Niners are without Justin Smith, because every other player on their front 7 (except for Mebane) is built for speed, not power.

      • rocket says:

They may have been trying to get bigger but the plan wasn’t to start two CB’s who are 6’3 and 6’4. Browner was a refugee from the CFL and Sherman was a 5th round pick. They were not the favorites for starting jobs going into TC last year. The rest of the CB’s on Seattles roster are 6ft or less. They lucked into a couple of big CB’s who could play, simple as that.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Rocket

I know you’re pretty high on your opinions, and they’re not bad at all, but the stated goal of Carroll and his defensive backfield coach was to get big and physical at the position. To say they got lucky by acquiring 2 giant CBs, the two largest in the league, and then deciding to start them, goes against logic and against what those coaches actually declared were their goals. I hate everything about the Seahawks and think that if you’re going to ascribe luck, you should do it here, but not because the team got the players they actually targeted, rather because the league has mysteriously allowed them to play an entirely more physical brand of defense at the position than every other team in the NFL. That was lucky.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Maybe Paul Allen paid Goodell.

      • BOS49er says:

Im sure there is a stat somwhere that charts pi and holding calls against Db’s It would be interesting to see where both of them stack up in that category because if my memory serves me right in both games vs the 9ers they wern’s called for either and there was plenty of opportunities as they were grabbing all night

      • rocket says:

I’m pretty sure anyone who states opinions believes in them Pork. I’m stating what I believe to be the truth. I’m not saying Carrol didn’t want to get bigger at the CB spot; I’m saying when you wind up starting a 5th round pick and a FA from the CFL, you got lucky that they can play as well as they have at their size. If they thought Sherman was anything special they would not have waited until the 5th round to take him. Browner was a flyer to fill out the roster. Luck? Yep.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Rocket

I think we’re saying pretty much the same thing, but you’re just not giving any credit whatsoever to Carroll or the Seahawks … which I’m fine with!!!

      • rocket says:

They get credit for bringing them in Pork, but there’s no way they foresaw the level of play they’ve gotten from them. Screw Carrol and the rest of ‘em anyway.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

They’re not prototypical CBs for their size and speed. In the past, who would have even looked at CBs that ran 4.63 and 4.54 at the combine? The prototype CB 40 number was around 4.4 or better. It was luck.

      • bayareafanatic says:

It’s not luck if the zebras let them maul receivers and allow it to go unpenalized.

  16. bdubbs23 says:

Rogers was a probowler last year. Culliver is better but he also got beat for a td too. Rogers wasn’t the reason why we lost. Our pass rush was awful and Wilson had all day to throw. Why Vic Fangio never rotates fresh pass rushers we will never know. I watched the tape again and I must say Whitner got beat by at least 7 different times. If anyone needs to be benched its him. CJ Spillman is a star safety sitting on the bench wasting his talents. He needs to take Whitners job.

    • Big niner says:

You might be right. He’s constantly getting beat by TE’s and bigger WR’s especially in the end zone. Maybe they should bring Whitner in for the nickel and dime packages.
I don’t think we have enough pass rushers. Vic need to scheme pressure with what we have.

      • bdubbs23 says:

You will never know if you don’t try…. our 2nd string defense dominated in preseason. There is no reason to play these guys every snap up front. They will get worn out and injured like Justin Smith. Smith is what 33 years old playing 90 percent of the teams snaps I’m surprised he made it as long as he did without getting injured. RJF and Sopoaga are way too slow I would be rotating guys in and out to see if we can find another diamond sitting on the bench. Remember Ray Mcdonald Tarell Brown and Navarro Bowman were all bench players 2 years ago. They got there chance to start and never looked back. I would unleash Ian Williams and some of these other guys and see if we can find a pass rusher. Right now its either Aldon or nobody.

      • BOS49er says:

        bdubs
I hear you on the rotation but we are running out of players to rotate at the line. with dobbs tukuafu and now smith out all that leaves is IWilliams. I like the idea of keeping ur guys up front fresh as well as giving on the job training for young players and am a bit surprised they didnt do it this year or last.

Im not sold on Spillman as a FS. I have doubts about his coverage ability as he strikes me more of a run stuffer than a center fielder

  17. Big niner says:

ZONE BLITZES!!! ZONE BLITZES!!! zone blitz………please!!!

  18. Big niner says:

what about Rodgers at FS? hmmm has he ever played that position and isn’t usually what happens when CB’s slow down?

    • Houston 9er says:

I really like that idea except for the fact that Whitner and Goldson really seem to have great chemistry. Whitner isn’t as good at coverage as Rogers would be but he’s great against the run. Perhaps it’s worth a try next year.

  19. Big niner says:

If we sign a guy like Bartell, former Raider cb, would he be playoff elligible?

  20. Hoferfan67 says:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!!

  21. Jack Hammer says:

If it were my call I would be starting Brown and Culliver in the base D, and in the Nickle/Dime, Brown would slide to the slot and Rogers would play on the outside. Due to the boundary it is much easier to hide a guy on the edge in coverage compared to the middle.

I would definitely look to add a starting calibre corner in free agency, and also look to the draft. This would be in line with their philosophy of competition at every position. Make Rogers work his tail off for playing time, and even if he wins the job the team is better and deeper for it.

    • Big niner says:

what do you think of Bartell?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Rogers-Cromartie

      • Big niner says:

Is he available right now? Bartell is..

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Will be this off season.

      • rocket says:

        Big niner,

Bartell was horrible with the Raiders. I’m not sure if it was injury related as he was coming back from an injury he suffered in the first game, but he was really bad and they released him which tells you all you need to know about his ability right now.

If they release Rogers after the season they may look at the FA route to replace him but I don’t know who is out there. Maybe the Eagles release Asomugha and the Niners bring him back to the bay area.

      • Big niner says:

Bartell was more of a salary cap victim. Their defense was horrible period. As an addition to what we have, he might be good. Did you see the link I posted?

      • rocket says:

He wasn’t making much at all. The cap had nothing to do with it. He was just really poor when he got in there. As I said, I don’t know if he was still struggling with the injury to his shoulder he suffered in the first game, but he was cut for bad play and it was deserved. I didn’t see the link you posted.

      • rocket says:

I just watched the clip…from 2009. He’s not remotely the same caliber of player now Big niner. He suffered a major neck injury last year, a shoulder injury that kept him out the first half of this season, and played poorly enough to get released when he did come back. A declining player with injury trouble is not the type of player I want the Niners to sign.

    • Big niner says:

      That’s what I heard on the radio..knbr

  22. Fansince 77 says:

I think they should bench Rogers and start Alex Smith at corner. He can do it all.

    That was a joke.

    • 23Jordan says:

      Fan77,

I say give Smith a shot at it. Might beat Rogers out. Lol

      • Neal says:

I think Alex should take Justin spot, if the cowboy can’t go.

      • Fansince 77 says:

Merry Xmas 23Jordan — Sorry I got rude last time. It was the holidays. the mad dash for toys, the frustration from the Seattle Beatdown, and the assumption I am a Smither, cuz I ain’t!!!!!

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Fan77,

None of us always agree here. As long as we know at the end of the day, we are passionate about our team and we just want to win. The personal attacks don’t hurt me. I’ve taken more than anyone on this blog. I’m use to it. We’re good. I expect you to be as hard on Kap as I was on Alex. I will be too. Happy new year bro!

  23. BarNone says:

The defense has a bigger problems. The 49ers defense is predicated on stopping the run first and Sunday night they look pretty pedestrian on that front.

Seattle ran directly at the vacuum created by Justin Smith’s absence.

Even Aldon has looked a little like Jeff Kent the last six quarters. Kent was a solid player, an All Start player, but he was only NL MVP because he took his swings in front of Lamar.

Re-watch the Seattle game. They were running right all night.

Every other playoff-bound NFC team just saw the same thing as well.

    • drsgrosse says:

Yeah, and they were holding multiple times on each of those runs. I hope Seattle comes to SF. Put them on the road, where they are 3-5 this, where they don’t get all the home field advantage provided by the officials, and they will be a different team. RJF was fine if they called the fouls.

  24. RC says:

Carlos is hurting the team week in and week out. We made the move to Kaep without a pause so it’s hard for me to imagine that a move within the secondary would cause any waves that matter. I’m sure Los would tell you he’s not playing well.

  25. bayareafanatic says:

Jenkins will be fine. He needs to get on the field now. Can’t teach speed. Wasn’t it just four weeks ago that we said La Michael James was a bad pick and all we had to go on was that we hadn’t seen him yet?
At this point I would be really disappointed if they play Ginn ahead of Jenkins.

    • BOS49er says:

GINN has got to go. WR useless, PR no longer reliable hands, hasnt had an explosive return in who knows how long, KR already suplanted by LMJ

HE IS STEALING MONEY and seems averse to contact more so this year than in the past

      • bayareafanatic says:

No kidding. Remember his reluctance to cover the ball on the pitch play against the Rams?
I know what we need. We need Singletary to come pull his pants down at halftime…

      • BOS49er says:

he was moving in slow motion on that one and didnt even try to bat the ball out of bounds smh.

Yeah sing would be an inspiration with his antics and words of wisdom. At times I think we are using his brilliant Offensive philosophy of running up the middle on 3 out of 4 plays

  26. BOS49er says:

Im all for a move that makes the team better but I have serious doubts that Cox or Brock is the answer. Im OK with playing cully over CR in the base but we r in nickel so much it is almost a question of whether to flip TB and CR with TB going to the slot and CR staying outside. When cox was on the field most notably in the GB game he didnt set the world on fire or do anything that made me clamor to see more of him. We most definitley need to adress a slot corner in the draft or FA or just any capable corner and move TB to the slot.

    Grant
The rankings are skewered. While TB is the 8th best, he achieved that ranking by playing outside. Who’s to say that if he moved to the slot he would still be ranked 8th, the slot is much tougher to play so naturaly players who play that position would give up a higher QB rating that those who play outside

Two moves to make the secondary better. One replace an older CR for a younger faster Cully in the slot. Two replace Whitner on passing downs for Spillman. Whitner is a hard hitter in run support but he is a nightmare in coverage.

        Dubs
Cully is to tall to play the slot. Plus he is our best CB outside the numbers. Spillman had issues in coverage in TC and preseason. Sure he is fast and hits hard but the “instincts” dont seem to be there yet. JH repeatedly said that he was waiting for sum 1 to step up at safety on the second unit and it didnt sound like he was satisfied with what he saw. Of course this was pre season and those issues could have been straigtened out.
Ur right about one thing though. IF U dont Try Ul never know

No you don’t bench Rogers because doing so would be overreacting and putting inferior players on the field. If Cox or Brock were better options they’d be playing; they aren’t. Rogers hasn’t been as good as last year but he’s still among the best CB’s we have on the roster. You go with what you’ve done all year and live with it. The pass rush was not consistent against Seattle and when they did get there Wilson slipped away and made plays outside the pocket as he has done all year. Rogers has to be better than he was last week, but so does everybody else.

As to the Niners draft, it is way too soon to make any kind of declaration on how good it is. The Niners had starters and depth at pretty much every position coming into the season so this draft class was not going to make much of an impact. LMJ is just starting to scratch the surface, Jenkins will start to play now, they have Looney who is a pretty good prospect but is not playing due to Boone being better than expected. They have one guy who is on IR and another who was drafted with a knee condition they knew about and knew would take time to get better. In other words, this draft was not about this year and was never intended to be. Have an ounce of patience and wait and see how these guys do when they actually get a chance to play before making conclusions on the quality of the class.

Grant that was a pretty bad mock, glad to see you are as bad a prognosticator as the rest of us.

    Just fix it. Quick.

These guys are cyber gum, hard to scrape off (lol). No matter how many times they get banned they still show up with their crap. Ignoring them is their worse enemy.

I felt that Rodgers did a great job against Wes Welker two weeks ago.
      Rodgers biggest problem is inconsistency.
I like the idea of having T.Brown covering the primary WR.

    Hey JORDY

Your QB just got signed by the Browns! Are you moving to Cleveland, buddy?

    • 23jordan/ says:

      Everything,

I’m already here bro. Josh is the dude. I’m waiting to see Vick in Minnesota with Adrian Peterson. Now that would be a squad next year. Michael Vick with protection with AP and Harvin. Wow, they would be pretty good I think. Vick almost lost his rib age in Philly.

    • Mr. Everything says:

“No one covers the slot like Carlos Rogers.”

What Shrager, you mean with a turnstile and a ticket counter?

    • BOS49er says:

I believe there was a punctuation error in the post where the writer forgot a “,”. A more accurate sentence would have been. “No one covers the slot, like Carlos Rogers”

  30. Alan M says:

    Grant, I have a question:

Should the 49ers pay the signing bonus due to Alex Smith (which would be a major cap hit), knowing that they can probably trade him with all the teams needing a proven QB (Jets, Chiefs, Jaguars, Raiders, Vikings, Buffalo, Tennessee)? This could yield a 2nd round pick in the draft.

    • BOS49er says:

Thats living dangerously. To fork over 7 mil and then hope to get a 2nd is risky although in the event that we failed to trade him keeping him around as insurance wouldn’t be the worst idea. I just think that as long as he is here the simmering AS debate will allways hang in the air and might be a distraction. But from a football standpoint u need a good backup, QB’s get hurt all the time

    • Msclemons67 says:

Agree with BOS – would be a dangerous move. If the bonus is paid the 49ers are on the hook for a 9.25 million cap hit.

The trade rules are kind of odd sometimes – I’m not sure a trade would erase the cap hit entirely. I’ve been reading that the Jets will be stuck with around 10 million even if they trade Sanchez now.

It would be nice to get a decent pick though. Hopefully the 49ers have enough ammo in the draft to grab DL, CB and WR

      • BOS49er says:

hahahaha “trade Sanchez now” thats a good one Clem. I wonder who would want him and be willing to give something up? If Tebow garnered a 4th and some cash what would Butsack be worth?

  31. Msclemons67 says:

Hey now – 17 year old girls love Sanchez. Just have to find a fan base with that demographic. Maybe the Chargers?
