SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley spoke in the 49ers locker room Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Colin Kaepernick.
Q: Jim Harbaugh said this afternoon Colin Kaepernick has earned the right to play this Sunday. Do you expect this to be a week-to-week thing?
STALEY: No. Kaepernick is our starter and we support him 100 percent. All that other stuff, I think it’s moot. We’re all worried about doing the best job we can to get W’s. Whoever is out there, we support them 100 percent.
Q: Is there much talk among the offensive line about changing quarterbacks? Would guys rather block for one guy or the other?
STALEY: No. It’s a situation where whoever Coach Harbaugh chooses, that’s the guy we’re rolling with. We’re all worried about getting W’s. We’re all worried about doing our jobs to the best of our abilities. We don’t have time to worry about favorites. Kaepernick is our guy and we support him 100 percent.
Q: Kaepernick can run around, escape the rush and break tackles. Does that take some of the teeth out of the pass rush?
STALEY: A little bit. Sometimes depending on the defense, they have to watch out for contain. It does sometimes slow it down depending on the defense they have called.
Q: Cameron Wake said he’s going to try to bait Kaepernick into making the wrong reads.
STALEY: I think he’s talking about our option game and our read game. We’ve been practicing those plays all season. We’re well versed on that.

Now that is what a teammate is supposed to sound like! He supports every player on the team and the rest is moot. No Carlos Rogers backstabbing here. Move along folks, nothing to look at. Move along.
What did C Rodgers say?
He said that the word around the league was that Alex Smith was weak and he also said that Alex Smith got chances with the Niners that a lot of other players have not gotten. He just told the truth.
23 you are the dumbest blogger on here and a liar. Why didn’t you bet FDM coward?
Oh,
no primetrash/welcher Carlos R did say something to that effect.
@Grinch: Jordan23, Bayarea, and Nick have already answered your question and added their own opinions. Whilst all three are correct that Carlos was repeating an opinion he had heard and perhaps even shared, the point is that he should not have repeated them in public.
Why? Because anyone who has played sports at any level, PeeWee to High School to College to the Pros knows what it means to be a teammate and have your teammates’ back.
Compare that to what Staley just said here “Kaep is our starter and I support him 100%”. Staley is being a solid teammate. Carlos, not so much. Agree to disagree but if you’ve played sports, you know, Carlos is out of line.
You can and should talk to your teammate if he does not have his head in the game or is missing assignments and hurting the rest of the team. But you do it in the least visible or most private place possible. Not in the media. This was not a heat of the game moment and was therefore, inexcusable.
To that effect? Back to playing Dr.Phil Bay? GTF outta here!
Grinch,
That is exactly what Carlos said. Look back into the archives here on this blog. The wounded prime cant get over the fact that what’s his name is not the QB any more.
Carlos talked about how bad he always heard Alex Smith was. He obviously knows Roddy White and we all know what Roddy White said! Lol Bwahahahaha!
Roddy White should worry about winning a playoff game, something Alex Smith has done.
Prime,
You STILL mad bro??? Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
I’ll just leave this here…
http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2012/11/inside-the-49ers/carlos-rogers-alex-has-had-a-lot-of-chances-that-some-other-players-would-never-get/
That’s a non-issue. Rogers stated the truth about how the Redskins viewed Alex Smith back in the day. He also stated facts that AS has gotten multiple chances and that perhaps other QBs has not beeen as fortunate.
It is basically AS attitude that kept in the league, other busts such as Ryan Leaf, Vince Young and Jamarcus Russell, all had crappy attitudes and that have mental issues to deal with.
Staley must have just left the Principals office.
Even Staley knows it’s “carved in stone” now.
Crabs,
Yes Staley does know. He just laid it out instead of giving the reporter a Harbaughism. Lol
Harbaughism……Lol
23J – Caca runs downhill.
York → Harbaugh → Roman → Solari → Staley.
Sounds like someone got a good talking to…….but good PC answer let’s move on to bigger and better things….NINERS!!!!
Looks like the media is still trying to create a controversy that isn’t there.
Yeah right. He was in the office whining about who he’d rather block for. Them had a friggin grin on his fat face when the rams scored a defensive td. I always though staley was overrated and wasn’t a big fan. But after seeing his smile last Sunday I will never cheer for that punk. He’s no 49er. I’d bet that if any current or past 49er saw him smiling after that. There would be some trouble. Ax his a$$!
Can anyone get a shot of that? Grant? Do you have access? I deleted the game already.
Bay,
Here you go, found it on some random twitter. What’s your opinion? http://twitter.com/808Ace49/status/275444257056256000/photo/1
So it’s not only Cosell who can read minds.
Ribico. Give me one good reason as to why he’d have a smile on his face right after that play
You’re still complaining about this non story. Face it, the only reason you have a gripe is because he is friends with Smith.
Jdilla. I don’t care who he’s friends with. Can YOU give me a good reason as to why he was smiling after that play? Or are you goin to play guess what MD thinks?
MD, does not matter, CK blew it and that cost us the game!
You’re playing guess what Staley is thinking. But ok, have you ever smiled or laughed after something really bad just happened or embarrasing. Kinda like “damn, that really just happened.” I know I have. Maybe depending on ones personality the reaction might be different.
MD, you don’t know that a Ram player didn’t say something to him after that play. Focus on the positive right?
Jdilla I’m not guessing what he’s thinking. I’m seeing what he’s feeling. Those are called facial expressions. If you want to except a loser mentality. Fine have at it! Embarrassment smiles are when YOU good up. He Didnt on that play. It seems you have an answer for everything Smith. That’s not why I have a problem with him. I don’t care if he’s mad about smith, happy about smith, or doesn’t care about smith losing his job. So take your cape off and quit making it about the backup qb.
And prime. He Didnt cost them the game. He Didnt play very well, but he Didnt cost is the game. Bad throw, bad hustle by Ginn, bad call. If anyone blew the game it was Akers and his miss. That play was worth 6 points. We had 10 at the time. No bueno Prime.
You can’t be embarrassed for other people? He plays on offense with CK. It was an ugly play and sometimes all you can do is laugh at situations like that. That’s my type of personality though, so like I said you or other people might have a different take on it.
Sorry dude. But winners don’t smile when they get beat. In dominoes, pool, bowling or any other activity fine. But your job? Please. I haven’t seen any other 49er smiling on the sidelines. When I watch teams lose on their bench I don’t see smiles.
And Hoff. Nice try. I’ve seen staley get into trash talking before. And he isn’t quite. The late great Richard Pryor couldn’t crack a joke at that time to make someone smile. He wasn’t jawing with anyone. He was looking right at the bench. You guys want to make excuses for him or think it was nothing. Fine. That’s your outlook. I don’t like him and lost all respect for his pride for the game and this team. AX his a$$ for all I care!
It’s an overreaction and nothing more without proof regardless of what someone here said they saw on the recording.
md, I’m with you on winners don’t smile 100%. Look i’ll make my last point because this is going nowhere. IMO there are certain moments when it is borderline comical because of how bad/ugly/stupid/embarrassing ect the situation is. I’ll leave it at that. There is nothing in staleys past that supports him not being a team player. Maybe i’m giving him too much credit, but like you said, when it is a job, I find it hard to believe he would sacrifice potentially losing his employment just because CK is under center.
Hofer,
Don’t cross a line you can’t come back from. That ise that is disgusting.
Bay, you have a bad habit of telling people what to do. You were the one that said AS should be the starter the rest of the year regardless of how CK plays (I have the comment written 11/19). So knock off your higher than thou attitude because it’s not working. Post something worth reading for a change.
Hofer,
my comment was based on not knowing how game ready Kaep was. I was thinking of his development, not the team and not Alex.
Ultimately if he was game ready then he benefits and so does the team.
I just didn’t want him rushed into action. But if Harbaugh says he’s ready and the best option for the team I believe it and I’m in.
My comment to you was about Staley. If it’s true that he had a smirk, then I think that is disgusting and nothing to defend.
MD running 18 yards back into the end zone for a safety, that’s on CK. The fumble pitch, that’s on CK. A 10 point swing because of inexperience. Now what happens in SEA and NE?
What safety?
You know the safety right up your a$$!
Safety what? Make some sense. Be a man. With a brain.
I’m with MD on this one. Staley had a huge s***-eating grin on his face after the guy who replaced his buddy had a bad play.
And btw watching it again. On the replay camera. You can clearly see #74 standing in the distance in the middle of the field and not a single ram around him. If the player who said something to him is louder than 1000′s of people screaming then Hoff might have a point. It sickens me to watch that garbage again.
@ ninermd:
A witch hunt? Really? That’s where you are now? Wow, you have been listening to too much talk radio.
By the way, you chastising jdilla for playing “guess what MD thinks” is perhaps the most comically ironic thing anyone has ever posted on this blog.
Claude…. Any reason why Staley should be smiling after that play? Oh wait. I’m sure you will scan the ends of the earth to think of something. Screw staley! And screw……. Wanna guess who I’m going to say next?
@ ninermd:
I bet it’s connected to that New World Order conspiracy you warned us about! Thank God we have you here to root out all the traitors. When are you running down to 49ers HQ to administer the loyalty oaths?
You had better hurry, though, because it looks like it might be spreading:
Kaepernick was roughed up on a short run in the fourth quarter, and notably got zero reinforcement from his offensive linemen.
From http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2012/12/film-review-kap-needs-to-be-a-better-game-manager-oh-the-irony.html
I think I’m going to start calling you mccarthymd. Do you mind?
Have any of you clowns heard of a grimace??? That’s what it looks like to me. The quality of the discourse on this blog, or rather the lack thereof, is astounding.
Let’s move on to something that actually exists, while you ferret out the Kaepertraitors, MD!! Go get’em!
Angus
You really believe Staley has manned up like he should have. He IS supposed to be the leader of the OL. Why hasn’t he been in the endzone to congratulate Kaep et al. on the TDs?
I haven’t noticed the endzone stuff one way or another, but I’m pretty confident if he was to openly gloat, smile, pout or sulk because his buddy was or was not starting, he’d be ostracized by the rest of the guys pretty quickly, as well as the coaching staff.
Football is a very ‘team’ sport, and if you don’t have the back of the guys you’re on the field with, you’re on the outs, real soon. To me, it’s just not reasonable to hold an opinion that he’d be so childish and immature about a situation that happens, frankly, all the time.
I’ve seen a lot of ridiculous threads in the last couple of years here but this one takes the cake.
We’re trying to determine why Staley was smiling now?
Wow. Jumping the shark on the big stage now.
I still had the game on my DVR when some knucklehead first put that ridiculous notion that Staley was happy that CK made a bad play on an earlier thread. I went back and looked at it several times.
Firstly, we don’t even know for sure if Staley was even smiling. He could’ve been grimacing.
Secondly, if he was smiling, we have no idea why he was smiling.
I have a hard time believing that Staley would be happy that any teammate made a critical mistake.
md/clem – I wonder what Justin Smith would say if he saw the Staley punk-ass smile?….. It’s disgusting to me!!
Joe Staley is now Joe Smiley. What a traitor!
CRabs,
Joe Smiley, a classic. I’m pissed, I don’t have the game taped. About to watch it on NFL rewind.
This could possibly this stupidest topic ever really discussed on the overreaction blog. You guys have to be kidding!
Winners ‘shrug’ the crazy shi* off all the time, that’s what makes them winners. They don’t let the bad stuff affect their outlook. JDilla is spot on.
Maybe he saw John Candy!
You jokers have NO idea of what was going on in his head. Someguys get the badass look, some have a focused intense look, and others are always having fun no matter what. How many times did you see Favre get sacked, come up smiling and pat the DE on the butt, some people just have positive outlooks no matter the circumstances.
We have truly hit the bottom of the barrel in conspiracy theories now. Who cares why or if Staley was smiling? Do you honestly think the guy wasn’t trying or secretly hoping Kap would screw up? You guys need to find another hobby to occupy your time.
If this is true its unforgivable! What a pile.
Grinch – You are right, it’s unforgivable what Joe Smiley did.
It’s so obvious it was a “that’s what you get” smirk, in response to his buddy Alex being benched. No doubt
Crab, you’re not seriously buying in to this? This is like Limbaugh nuttiness on the radio.
Adam – We can’t agree on everything my old friend. I’m dead serious, just calling it like I see it.
Hey your avatar still has the line under the helmet. :)
Hope you’re doing good Adam.
Crab this is how bad rumors take on a life of their own. You have no idea why or if Staley was smiling and creating some story that makes him look bad is really in poor taste. You don’t know the guy or what his motivation is. I know quite a few people that smile amid turmoil because it’s a reaction along the lines of “what the hell else can happen.” You are overreacting to a serious degree here.
Rocket – Was there any motive involved? I’m not a detective but I play one on blogs.
I explained my theory on this subject earlier if you’d like to read below.
Thanks for responding though.
In some time Davis needs to be our LT and we need to pickup a RT in the draft
Got to be kidding right? I dont think so. That is just pure nonsense. I know the critics are looking for anything to continue to take stabs at AS but this is going to far. Of course the same critics have nothing to say about Carlos Rodgers – why, his comments degrade AS. I usually let bias go unchecked but this is just plain stupid – Staley smiling because of a botched play – geez.
Agree, Under. It’s actually a little embarrassing to me to be on a blog with such conspiracy advocates. Adam called it Limbaugh style nuttiness; agree with that too.
Under, very well put.
under – Joe Smiley’s own words “I’d love to have [Smith] out there. He knows how I feel.”
Joe is Alex Smiths BFF and going into Rams game he was still upset with Harbaugh’s decision.
I respect that you, Tuna and Adam see it different.
@Crabs
Yeah, well, appreciate you for disagreeing in an adult way, amigo. Joe and Alex are friends, yes. Joe might be more comfortable with Alex because they’ve played together for years. I just don’t buy into the idea that Joe would give less effort for CK or enjoy success any less.
Lots of experts on this blog were bashing Staley last year right up to the time he was voted to the Pro Bowl.
Brotha
I don’t know if Staley deserved Pro-Bowl honors. But I do know he doesn’t deserve to be bashed.
Tuna – I have no doubt Smiley goes all out every play. He just had a “BFF moment” and it was captured on camera.
