Staley on the Seahawks: “Their defensive front is the fastest in the NFL, especially those two guys on the edge.”

SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley spoke at his locker Friday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: The Seahawks have the third ranked defense in the league. What makes them so good?

STALEY: Very, very fast. Their defensive front is the fastest in the NFL, especially those two guys on the edge (Chris Clemons and Bruce Irvin). They want to get you in third-and-long situations, so we have to do a good job on first and second down, kind of dictating to them. That’s when most of their production comes, third down. They’ve very good at getting off the field and creating turnovers. Very talented bunch.

Q: Do they do a lot of scheming?

STALEY: They do a little scheming. They give a lot of different fronts, but nothing we haven’t seen, nothing compared to some of the other teams as far as what they do. They’re just very good at what they do and they’re very fast, especially in that stadium. It creates trouble for teams because it’s so loud up there and they’re so fast off the ball. We have to do a good job without sound mechanics and our non-verbal communication.

Q: Speaking of the stadium, do you think that’s natural noise?

STALEY: I don’t know. It’s been loud ever since I’ve been in the league. They’ve always said it’s the way they engineered the stadium. If that was the case, why wouldn’t everybody do it?

Q: It’s as loud or louder than domes?

STALEY: Oh yeah. It’s by far the loudest.

Q: Even more than domes?

STALEY: By far. Every other stadium I’ve been in, you can hear the vibrations of your voice when you’re yelling. It’s so loud in there you can’t even hear yourself yell. I remember a game my rookie year, I was trying to make a call to Vernon. He was right in front of me and I was screaming at the top of my lungs, but he couldn’t hear what I was saying. He was looking at me with a confused look on his face. That was a hell of a game. I think we won that one.

Q: You guys have had 14 false starts this year. Last year you had 30. What do you attribute that improved?

STALEY: I think we’re a lot better with our silent mechanics. That’s usually where you have the issues – on the road when you’re anticipating the ball being snapped. It’s all timing. You’re really trusting the center to snap it when you’re anticipating it to be snap. If it’s not or it’s a second late, that’s when you get a false start. We’ve been a lot better with those mechanics. That’s everybody – wide receivers, running backs, everybody knowing when the ball’s going to be snapped.

Q: You see Alex Boone tapping Jonathan Goodwin right before the snap. Can you see that? Do you have a sense when the ball is going to snap from what Boone is doing?

STALEY: Yeah, sometimes. But no, usually.

Q: You’re just looking at the ball?

STALEY: You’re not even looking at the ball. You can kind of see it out the corner of your eye. You can see movement. That’s when we go.

Q: How big of a game is this for you guys?

STALEY: Huge game. It’s always fun to play the Seahawks. It’s always a very physical. I enjoy playing up there because of the atmosphere.

Q: Is the No.2 seed something that’s talked about a lot?

STALEY: That’s our goal. We want to get the Bye. We don’t shy away from our goals. We want to win the division, get the Bye, get in the playoffs and move on from there. It’s something that we control if we win out. It’s a big game as far as the division and getting the Bye.

Q: You go up against Justin Smith and Ricky Jean Francois in practice. Obviously Justin is Justin, but is Ricky a load too?

STALEY: Yeah, he is. He’s a very good player. He could start for a lot of football teams in the NFL. He fits this scheme really well. He knows exactly what we’re doing. Obviously Justin is Justin Smith, one of the best players in the NFL, but Ricky does a terrific job going in there. If he’s going, I know he’s excited to go out there and produce. He had a big sack last week. If he’s in there, we expect him to do great things for us.

Q: Justin hasn’t missed a start since 2001. Can you put that in some context?

STALEY: Super impressive, not only playing the line but to play the way he does with physicality. He plays every single play. Very impressive.

I think the 49er Offensive Line can overpower these guys and run it right down their throat. I just don’t want them to overuse Frank. That’s why I think James needs a another stellar performance. Stay hungry Boobie.

    • Jesse says:

Gonna be a great game and the niners will win the west but this one goes to Seattle as they will be undefeated at home this year, R.wilson and the hawks offense will put up enough for the legion of boom to slam the door We’ll see you in the playoffs

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Jesse,

Don’t imagine your team is going to beat the Niners until you prove that you can bet the Niners. You’re coach and your team is 0-3 against this coach and this team. You think your team has improved. This Niner team is vastly improved as well. Start talking about beating the Niners when you develop a history of doing so. Until then, all you have is hope my friend. We continue to deal with the 12 th man and the Seahawks quite well. Come back and tell me about it after the game. Don’t forget how you got here. I’ll be here Sunday at 9:30 celebrating. You are certainly welcome to join us Niner fans.

  2. Adam707 says:

Maybe someone can help me out. I recall me placing a 100$ bet that Gore would get 1000 this year. Problem is I can’t recall who. Anybody remember? Chances are they’ll stiff me anyway.

  3. Razoreater says:

So the 49ers are the underdogs in this game? Beautiful. Us Against The World. Who’s Got It Better Than Us?

  4. Hawk_Eye says:

The 49ers aren’t going to know what hit them Sunday.

    • Mr. Everything says:

We want the ball we’re going to throw a pick six to Al Harris

    • msclemons67 says:

Seattle fans crack me up. They talk like the SeaBastards have 5 Lombardi’s in the trophy case rather than being perennial doormats.

Did a lot of people from New Jersey move to Seattle recently?

I know Washington legalized pot but I hadn’t heard they legalized steroids. Slippery Pete just keeps on cheating.

    • ninermd says:

      Go Sonics….. Doooote!!!

    • Nick says:

The seahawk – aka Osprey – is an endangered species. They will get smashed on Sunday

  5. Willie niner says:

Hawk get real…..no wait…….get out of this blog

  6. Razoreater says:

Fangio never plays guys who don’t practice during the week. I’m pretty sure one of the Matts quoted him as saying,”A 1st-stringer that doesn’t practice during the week is less useful than a 2nd-stringer who does”.

  7. bayareafanatic says:

Hawk you needed the NFL to screw up and gift you a win against the Pack to even be in this position. Sorta desperate huh.

  8. AES* says:

Seattle will never receive the attention it deserves because Pete Carroll will find a way to steal the spotlight.

It’s what he does. Faking a field goal when the games outcome has been long determined, is P.Carroll’ trademark shady actions at it’s best.
Maybe Carroll had a momentary relapse and thought he was still in college looking to garner BCS brownie points for running-up the score.

  9. shawnrhod says:

Glad to hear cam johnson has been promoted. Was wondering when that would happen.

I wonder if Jason Babin is still out there and if he could fit in for a the remainder of the year.

Miami just signed Nate Keading. So I think there is one other formidable kicker out there…

    • philly9er says:

      Babin was claimed by jacksonville.

    • Msclemons67 says:

An interesting FA this year is Sedrick Ellis. He’s been considered a bust in New Orleans but I wonder if he could revitalize his career on a better defense.

    • Nick says:

I don’t think the Niners will make a splash in the FA market this offseason. The team has boat load of draft picks, is deep in most positions, and may be salary cap strained.

      • Msclemons67 says:

Cap will be a problem but Ellis might be cheap.

Remember – the 49ers have a quick 9 million in cap room coming once Alex is sent down the road.

      • Nick says:

The Niners already have RJF, Soap, and Ian Williams – who has better long term potential than Ellis.

  10. matt says:

It appears NY is wanting to rid themselves of Tebow and Sanchez. I could actually see SF going after Tebow. They were happy with Michael Robinson and Tebow is even bigger. I believe they could get him for a 5th round pick. I also think SF could continue to negotiate with the Jets and actually trade Alex Smith to them for a 3rd round even possibly a 2nd round.
I could see Smith going to Philly or Dallas as well. It all is going to depend on how Romo plays these next two weeks. If he flops, Smith is going to be sought after in Dallas. If Romo has a good game and eeks them into the playoffs, I believe Smith goes to Philly or NY Jets.
That’s relevant to Tebow because I think if Smith doesn’t go to Dallas, Tebow does. Jerry Jones will do anything for some publicity and Tebow is just that. Any thoughts?

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Dude, STOP IT! At least the part about Tebow coming here.
The first time Kaepernicus fumbled or gave up a pick Jordo & Bay will be all “Bring on Tebow! He’s our Savior! Kaep’s too smart and too fast and throws too well. We want a Fullback who can’t throw accurately playing QB! Anybody who disagrees with us is a #*^%# Kaepernecker!”

      • Matt says:

I don’t think that Tebow would come to SF to play QB or play backup QB. I think SF would trasform him like they did Michael Robinson. I think Tebow would be a nice cheap addition to replace Delainie Walker if he doesn’t take a 800k base with 500k bonus to remain with SF.

      • msclemons67 says:

// quietly files away “Kaepernecker” for future use

      • Jack Hammer says:

” I think Tebow would be a nice cheap addition to replace Delainie Walker”

SMH…did you not see Tebow take one off the dome earlier this season? There is a reason that experiment was shelved….

      • Neal says:

On a side note, I remember when Vick name came out as a free agent, and the Niners didnot want to bring in a dog killer to the team, now with Tebow, you have the Holly Roller outlook, would not mix in well with liberal views in Cali.

    • ninermd says:

Tebow is going home to Florida. Jacksonville. Smith goes to KC. Mark Sanchez stays with NY and they start all over with Norv turner and learns from rivers for 1 year. There you have it.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

md I agree some of those things should happen, but they might not.
~Is KC smart enough to put something together for AS?
~Does Jax make the that play? If they’re patient w/TT, who knows, he might refine his game. What of BG? Prob try another year with him and with Henne and TT avail.
~Can the Jets choke down the millions$ to let Sanchez leave?
~Then what for Jets? Sanchez and Tebow gone, hmmm, maybe give up choices to draft a promising QB from USC? Oh, wait…… Uh, McElroy? OK, lets see this week. AS if they could get him? They tripled down on their mistakes by getting Tebow and extending Sanchez with guaranteed $. How were those two moves not every bit as bad as the Raiders deal for a USC QB? Sheeesh.

      • Matt says:

That’s a great point. I hadn’t thought of Jacksonville as a spot for Tebow.
I don’t disagree that Sanchez stays in NY. His contract is far to big to trade. I don’t believe there is a team in the league interested in Sanchez’s contract. I just don’t think Sanchez is the starter under a new HC and OC. Could we see Vic Fangio headed to NY?
I think Carson Palmer would go to NY before Rivers would though. I don’t think Turner wants to be tied to anything SD after he torpedoed a sure thing.

      • ninermd says:

Brotha and Matt…. I think turner would defiantly bring rivers to mentor Sanchez. I think the outlook on Sanchez is he needs a qb minded coach and some help on the edges. He did play well when he was in the playoffs. Which I think will be good enough to stay in NY. It was good enough for the extension he’s sitting on. NY likes to make splashes with big names. It would shock me if turner wasn’t on their radar. Specifically for helping their million dollar qb.

As far as tebow I defiantly see him back in Florida. He is an icon there. Jacksonville couldn’t sell out the end zone seats. TT would help that. And Miami did start this wildcat surge and are always looking for a Hollywood esk type of show. TT behind henne could also make sense.

If smith stays (which I think will happen) then they will defiantly restructure the contract. If he decided to split. I think KC will be the front runner for his services. With their record draft picks will be plentiful for them to fill weak roster spots. No good qb class coming out. Smith is their guy.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Ninermd
1st thing: Its funny. I made these last posts and walked out and have been gone a few hours and here we are picking up the morning thread a few minutes apart. Couple of nerds.
Your take, that Jets should (have to) keep Sanchez and then bring in Norv AND Phillip Rivers? Pricey. Plus, what are Turner/Rivers going to do, run an Interceptions Symposium & Workshop? Sorry, that was smartass, but neither one looked that good in 2012.
I do get that if they keep Sanchez & Rex, they’d need brain trust to help Mark.

      • msclemons67 says:

Norv isn’t a great head coach but he’s probably the only person in the league besides Harbaugh that could salvage Sanchez.

      • Neal says:

Maybe Norv would want a year off, getting AS to the next level which is playing with consistency is a huge task.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @ Matt
I hope we don’t lose Vic. Two reasons we might not. I think he’s had a shot as a HC. I’m projecting here, but not sure Vic’s looking for a HC job. 2nd, with all their offensive problems, would Jets hire another D-oriented HC?
Speaking of management smarts, I want to see where Cowher lands. I think he’s in the market but will want big time control over personnel.

    • AES* says:

      Matt,
Interesting scenario of Tebow on the 49ers next season. This would be the ultimate challenge for a coach like Harbaugh who is known as the QB Whisperer.

But (although stranger things have happened) I don’t see the 49ers taking a flier on Tebow because it seems like a scenario that doesn’t work for both parties.
      1. Tebow will not be a starter.
      2. Tebow is not guaranteed that he could supplant Scott Tolzien.
      3. Harbaugh has too much invested interest in CK7 to risk any loss of balance.
      4. Tebow would take an enormous amount of time to mold into a quality QB.

I’m a fan of Tim Tebow and love his ardent passion for the game. But ultimately, it’s that same passion and huge competitive spirit that I personally believe has worked to his detriment.

One of Tebow’ most memorable highlights while at Denver is of him running to the sidelines and yelling, “no one else carries the ball here!” On the surface that may look like the type of competitive QB you want in a game, but the reality is that Tebow would never get away with doing this with a coach like Harbaugh.
Usurping the coaches call does not bode well for any player unless you’re Payton Manning.

I do hope that Tebow does find a team that will allow him to play, I just don’t see that being here.

      • Neal says:

The Niners donot want Tim Tebow, they don’t need to use a space for another very limited QB or a running back, Tebow wants to start and the Jags might give him a opportunity to do that, he does not want to be on the bench for another season.

      • AES* says:

Sorry, I believe Tebow’ quote was “only one person carries the ball here.”

      • msclemons67 says:

South Jacksonville High School is the only place I can think of where Tebow would be an upgrade at QB. Gabbert is horrible.

I’m fairly certain Webster added “gabbert” to the dictionary as verb meaning “to crap one’s self”.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Clem
Does that mean Skip Bayliss speaks Tebonics?

      • msclemons67 says:

@Brotha, I believe you have discovered the equivalent of the Bayless Rosetta Stone.

  11. Nick says:

I watched Seattle’s game last week against Buffalo. They used the pistol formation a couple of times – each time it was effective. When not in the pistol, they use pro style shotgun formation the majority of time – from which they ran read option plays. Most of their big runnings plays occurred outside the tackles. Buffalo didn’t set the edge properly and weren’t deciplined in gap assignments.

The Niners have a much better front 7 than Buffalo and are better coached. Look for SF to neutralize Seattle’s running game – Lynch and Wilson included.

On offense, the Niners have used pistol 33 times over the last two games, compared to only 30 times the first 12 games of season. With Kaepernick running the show, they’ve run more than 80% of the time from the Pistol, and have averaged 6.4 yards per rush.

This game has blow out written all over it.

  12. Nick says:

Bruce Irvin didn’t look so fast on the fumble return last week. He practically tackled himself while being chased by a Buffalo WR.

And then obviously consider reducing/increasing salaries of players who merit such actions (e.g. Extend CK, Aldon, Crab, Cully …)

      • rocket says:

They can get 18 mill under the cap with three player releases/Trades:

        Alex Smith
        David Akers
        Johnathon Goodwin

There’s also some easy restructures on long term deals with VD, Brooks and Rogers that would save ample room on top of the 18 mill. The cap is not going to be an issue at all.

      • Neal says:

It might be another year of many draft pics that don’t make the team.

      • Nick says:

        Neal

You might be right, but I’m not so sure. The team needs on D include defensive tackle, OLB, and CB. On offense, the needs are TE, center, tackle, and WR. Special teams: kicker and return specialist.

Depending on who they draft and how those picks turn out, the following guys could be expendable: C. Rogers, Dobbs, Bakhtiari, Haralson, Soap, D. Walker, Moss, Manningham, Ginn, K. Williams, Goodwin.

      • Neal says:

        Nick,

Perhaps the cornerback they need can return punts also, James is good with kickoff returns, K Williams salary is low, and I am ok with him being a 4th receiver and also returning kickoffs, maybe jenkins can get us to the next level,Manningham will be expendable only if he cannot play, expecting big things from in the playoffs. Ginn, Akers, Goodwin, Soap will all be gone, I would expect D Walker to move on, how much money can the team put for two tightends.

      • angusinCanada says:

With so many draft picks, but already a strong roster, I expect a lot of trades, bundling some of those extra picks for 2014 picks, or moving up in the 2013 draft!

    • Neal says:

I was shocked that Andy Lee makes 4 million bucks per season, great punter, got to be a great job, kick and rarely gets bang up,thought that Rogers salary was excessive when they resigned him.

    • Nick says:

I think the team will try to retain Goodwin, Rogers, Soap, RJF, L. Grant, and Goldson.

      On the cut list:
      Akers
      Alex Smith
      Bakhtiari
      Cox
      Hampton
      Haralson
      Robinson
      Dobbs

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Nick

Why? You’re choosing low salary players to cut. You need to get at the problem. Plus, Goodwin and Rogers are currently under contract. Are you recommending restructuring their contracts?

      • Nick says:

Alex and Akers are not low salary guys. Rogers is too valuable to cut. I think the team keeps him for another year and will try to restructure his contract.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Nick

No, but the other 6 are low salary players, yet would seem to have value because if familiarity with the system. For instance, Dobbs, Hampton, Cox, and Robinson are all young guys the Niners probably won’t cut unless they can get better players in this years draft. Cox is a Donatell guy, so he won’t be cut. Hampton has been compared to Gore, and they thought highly enough of him to keep him all season despite him being PUP. We’ll see :)

    • bayareafanatic says:

Akers cut. AS cut Rogers cut. And it wont be popular but VD trade…

      • Mr. Everything says:

Yeah, I almost put VD there too. He’s not producing in the pass game, but it’s hard to discount his blocking and his big play ability as evidenced last playoffs. It’s possible they try to restructure him, as he is a teamfirst guy

      • Neal says:

Call me crazy but I would take Brent Jones over VD anyday of the week, Brent Jones had great hands, open way more then VD, not bad speed and he ran with the ball so recklessly and giving up his body in doing it, too bad he is a republican. haha

Yes, I am. My plane leaves in an hour.

        Grant,

Kind of interested on how the fans have taken Cheating Pete as a head coach, because of the way of him being a former USC coach and with most people not liking USC because of the rivarly with the Washington Huskies.

        That’s the good life : )

Safe travels. The 49ers are undefeated on your road trips correct?

      • msclemons67 says:

        Well? Which airline?!?

Jeez dude, give us the details. That’s what reporters are supposed to do.

        :-D (obviously kidding)

(also, tell Lowell I’m still mad about his 1988 column that said Montana should be benched)

Grant share some a good spot to pound a couple and eat. Taking an rv tailgating trip next season up there.

  15. Rick says:

I am a lot more nervous about this game than last week against NE. Division games on the road are usually the toughest for any team. And, in this case, we have a couple of well matched teams who know each other well.

The wild card is Kaepernick. Seattle has not yet faced him, and that may be the crucual advantage that puts the Niners over the toip.

    49ers 21 Seattle 17

    Go Niners.

  16. Trent says:

I’m confident we can out muscle them on both sides of the ball and win this game
