Steve Young explains how to get Vernon Davis involved in the 49ers passing attack

Steve Young spoke on KNBR Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers’ use of Vernon Davis.

Q: Should the 49ers do a better job getting Vernon Davis open and part of the game plan?

YOUNG: I haven’t seen the explosiveness, and he’s an explosive player, so if part of this switch to Colin is to be more explosive then let’s get [Davis] out on the short motion. If [Davis] is your No.1 explosive player in the pass game, and he certainly qualifies, then he can’t line up in the tight formations and let it rip.

Whenever we wanted to get Brent Jones going, we’d just bring him out short motion, move him around to the slot, Y-motion, just make sure that he didn’t get caught up in the wash every time. Get him out on the perimeter and make it happen.

    It’s coming on Sunday night…

  2. highpriest333 says:

Vernon will show up on Sunday because the game is nationally televised.

  3. Jai says:

    And so it is

  4. Dee Phiant says:

This is not about Vernon, this is about Harbaugh!
Steve is calling it the way it is. If Kap is the deep threat that Alex doesn’t have AND we have all these great receivers. Why aren’t we seeing more TD’s? Granted that Moss and Kyle dropped one, but I haven’t seen much more than that.
If JH is calling the shots as a HC, then this is how he wants them to play.
NO explosiveness, No deep threat, just safe running, even when it isn;t working.

Yeah, it’s like a Twilight Zone drama … got the hot coach who everybody wanted, who killed it at SD and Stanford, but never quite won the championship, who now is resurrecting the team, but might he be flawed in this totally unacceptable way … ? Might he and his brother John both share this flaw? The Niners are the new Ravens, both great defenses, but neither team has any established offensive rhythm that identifies them. Are the Harbaugh brothers to coaching what DeBerg was to quarterbacking?

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        Dangle

Is that a hopeful “no” or a “no” based on an opinion that you’d like to share? It’s a fair question. Maybe the Harbaugh brothers, for all their brilliance in leadership, simply lack the killer instinct, maybe they are TOO careful offensively, and it is a trait taught to the both of them by Jack Harbaugh. It’s a scary thought!!!

      • dangle says:

        :) lol
It was a ‘no, the harbaughs are not steve deberg.’ I’m not exactly sure how ‘career backup’ translates metaphorically to coaching, but I do not think there is some inherent flaw in the harbaugh brothers that will prevent them from winning it championships. At least not one that is visible right now. You have to be good enough to make the playoffs to even have a shot at winning the superbowl and without JH we are not in the conversation.
His style of coaching may be unusual, but so far it has worked at every level, including the NFL.

And don’t even get me started on the POS known as the BCS. there is no ‘championship’ in college football.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

I think people said DeBerg was just good enough to lose the game for you (or some variance on this)

      • dangle says:

that sounds familiar. Ok I understand your analogy, but I don’t buy it. Once you get into the playoffs There is a ton of luck involved. Injuries, magical catches on your helmet, tuck rules being invented, balls bouncing your way, or calls going your way. The ravens were a dropped TD pass or missed FG away from beating the pats and gettting to the superbowl last year. Once you are good enough to get to the dance, a lot of variables are out of your control, from a HC perspective.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

That’s true, Dangle. Not every coach has Joe Montana to win Superbowls for him. I will say that those first 4 trophies never seemed to result from luck or magic, and none ever really seemed out of reach.

  5. east coast niner fan says:

i would not go that far Dee Phiant , i agree we need to use him more but i think more creatively on te screens, short bubble screens, split him out wide at wr whatever. got to get him involved early to get those lbs to back up and give gore more room to work.

    • Dee Phiant says:

I REALLY think JH needs to mix it up more. Last year it was all VD, this year it is Crabtree. I also would have like to see him mix up the QB’s. Play them both, keep the defenses guessing what’s coming. The QB would work harder, and the fans would have more fun!

      • bayareafanatic says:

You should try the badminton room….

      • 23jordan/ says:

        DEEEPHIANT,

TRY this handle for yourself. Deeelirious!!!!! We have 1 QB and one backup. The backup doesn’t play unless the starter gets a concussion. Didn’t you see the 1st Rams game?

  6. Razoreater says:

Steve Young has it right. Why Roman does not utilize VD in the way Steve describes is a question I’ve long pondered.

  7. Bgamebawler says:

When Alex Smith didn’t make a lot of big plays everyone blamed him and called him a “game manager.” Now that Kaep doesn’t make big plays everyone blames Roman & Harbaugh. Not trying to pick an argument (seriously) but why is that? Kaep graded on a curve or now more evidence that it’s really the play calling?

    • DS94everXev says:

Because some here including Grant weren’t impartial in their evaluation of AS and CK.

The reason there is so much “What the hell?” is because the eval of the 2 QB’s is a joke. Had the eval been fair, you’d see a lot fewer “sides”.

Look back at the grades AS received and compare them to those CK has. That is a lot of the “sides” debate.

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

      Bgamenawler

50 yard runs, 30+ yard pass plays …

His chunks are larger and he’s producing far far far more yards per game than Alex, whether over land or by air.

      • Prime Time says:

Now the next step is passing TD’s. This weekend amd next, for us to be SB worthy, CK has to throw 4-5 TD’s in two games.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Sure as hell needs to do some great things these next 10 days

    • 23jordan/ says:

      Bgame,

Did you miss the 50 yard touchdown run last week?? 50 yard runs are usually considered big plays. How about the one the week before last?? You gotta watch the games

  8. RobbyC says:

It’s not fantasy football. Stats are for girls says Justin Smith. Ck hasn’t thrown a td in what 12 qtrs??? I mean seriously, and look at Vick if you need an example of what an explosive qb get you.

  9. RobbyC says:

I meant to “explosive” qb. Just to funny. He is just shiny. If the niners lose in the playoff early or don’t clinch the division people will be done with him.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Robby

I wouldn’t go that far. But it’s a blog, so lets play pretend.

The Niners and AS are finished. If the Niners are finshed with CK, that leaves Tolzein. Interesting point: JH announced AS the starter after mini-camp. He didn’t announce who the #2 was till the end of preseason. Suggesting CK hadn’t secured it, and Tolzein nearly beat him out. So maybe the Niners are testing CK now to see if they should get Tolzein a shot as the starter next year if, as you suggest, we fall on our butts in the playoffs.

      • RobbyC says:

I agree, that smith is done in sf. But, I’m not drinking the kapernick cool aid. The offense has regressed since Chicago. I’m not talking about the coaches, I’m talking bout the fans. Most ppl that are/have been hating on smith where the same ones that loved him after the saints game.

I would understand if he had kept playing like he did against Chicago because that was impressive. We shall see, maybe geno smith or another qb has the “hot hand”

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Robby,

Yeah, 133 QB rating in every game would impress you. Good to know that. I’ll tell Kap to put that in your stocking for Christmas. I’m sure everyone would like to see that. How about being realistic?

  10. Bgamebawler says:

Well, I think the next two games will be interesting. I hope Kaep shocks the world and plays great. I think getting the ball to Vernon Davis would be a good start. I think JH calls a conservative game when it’s clear the opponent can’t score, regardless of who’s QB. And I think that’s smart. He probably can’t rely on that approach this week, so let’s see what Kaep can do. Although I really expect the Niner D to give the Pats a lot of trouble.

    • dangle says:

Thats a good point about gameplanning for specific opponents. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Harbaugh and his staff made more conservative game plans for teams that are not elite. I guess we’ll find out this sunday how much water that theory holds…

  11. I.P. Daily says:

Colin is starting his, what, fourth or fifth game? Of course there will be rough edges at the beginning and maybe they should have waited until next year. But if he is the QB of the future, better to get him going now before we have to give smith a bazillion dollars next spring. Personally I think he will be tremendous once he gets in gear.

More than any other blog in the Bay Area, this place has more snarks per square foot. Putting the team down, making stupid comments about the players and the coaches and chewing each other’s butts with gusto does not make one football educated. Why not just sit back, watch the show and see how it plays out. It’s only a game; I’ve got way more important — and interesting — things in my life.

Like should I trade the ’39 Finn Mosin for that ’23 dragoon of Jason’s and how the heck do I trim the claws on the old Siamese without losing a pint of blood? Then there’s the ’77 Yamaha SG2000 that came back into my life; through the ’60 tweed Pro it rocks. The new lady at Sac Harley is a looker and almost old enough for a graybeard like me. We won’t even talk about the 180/00 BP that has me on meds and the arrhythmia that won’t go away.

See? It’s only a game folks played by people who wouldn’t give you the time of day — millionaires with houses whose bathrooms are bigger than your first floor. Give the anger and vitriol a rest and enjoy life while you can…

I do not know most of what you’re discussing in your 3rd paragraph, but point made.

      • ribico says:

I do understand most of what he’s talking about in the 3rd paragraph and will add it’s sacrilege to plug anything other than one of Leo’s creations into that ’60 tweed Pro.

        IMO :)
