Steve Young says the 49ers must score 30 points to beat the Patriots

Steve Young spoke on KNBR Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said the 49ers have to do to beat the Patriots on Sunday. The Patriots are currently favored to win by five-and-a-half points.

Q: How many points do the 49ers have to score Sunday to beat the Patriots?

YOUNG: The Patriots look hot to me. They look energized. Defensively, they’re all over the quarterback. Vince Wilfork is killing it. They’ve got a nice secondary all of a sudden. They look like a pretty dang good team.

To me, if you’re going to beat the Patriots in New England, you’re going to be in the 30s. You just figure by the time it’s all over, if you don’t score 30, you’re probably not going to get there. They score a touchdown a quarter and they don’t turn the football over. That’s why it’s going to be a fun test. It’s going to tell everyone a lot about this Colin-Kaepernick-going-the-distance-winning-the-Super-Bowl thing.

yep, that’s what he said. The Dolphins held them to 23 though, Im thinking we can do the same

    • faith71 says:

Roger that. The patsies looked preety dang impressive in ’07 as well, in fact they were undefeated going into the SB. And the G-men (with a lesser defense than ours) and a more potent NE offense held them to 17.
Will we do the same? Who knows? So far Lorenzo Neil, who’s not an idiot by any stretch picked the Niners but even if he hadn’t I’m not sweating the pats. Fangio needs to call a great game. Instead of having Bo & PW just sitting and reacting, I’d have them taking turns blitzing TB with Aldon moving all over the line and Justin Smith wreaking his usual havoc.

    • f49er says:

      Damn!

      You beat me to it!

As I posted earlier in the week….If there’s 1 thing I’ve learned about this NFL Season is NOTHING is what it appears from the week before with ANY Team.

The Patriots are a Great Team but there certainly not Unbeatable either. We’ll see

    • drsgrosse says:

Neither game cited in these 2 posts was in Foxborough n December. I certainly hope the Niners D can dominate, but these two examples are not valid.

  2. Nick says:

Obviously, steve Young didn’t check the weather report.

  3. highpriest333 says:

Grant, can you compare Vernon’s stats on nationally televised games versus games that aren’t? Including the daytime games of the week

  4. ArmyNod says:

30 won’t be enough betting the spread much less outright.

  5. ninermd says:

    27-23 49ers! The end

  6. Houston 9er says:

There are strategies that will hold the Pats down in the 20′s. I believe Culliver and Rodgers can handle the WRs 1 on 1. They need to go inside out with a LB and Safety on Hernandez. When the Pats go play action, the 9ers need to literally tackle Hernandez off the line of scrimmage. When Hernandez is in tight the Pats like to line him up on the play action side and then have him run a drag backside and let Brady pull up and hit him. It’s not defensive holding to hold up Hernandez on the line of scrimmage if there is a play action fake. The other thing is Lloyd and Hernandez don’t like to get hit. Every chance the 9ers get they need to hold those guys up and let another guy come clean his clock. The Pats enjoy the most generous officiating in the league at home. The 9ers will get some penalties but thats ok. They need to look the Pats in the eye and let them know they will not out-physical the 9ers and they better get down as soon as they catch the ball or they’ll be picking their teeth up off the ground on their way back to the huddle.

    • Razoreater says:

      I like that mentality.

    • angusinCanada says:

I have no problem with an early unnecessary roughness penalty, send a message off the bat.

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Who needs Gregg Williams when Houston 9er is in da house!

    • msclemons67 says:

The only problem with that strategy is that mussing Brady’s hair can be grounds for a 4 game suspension. I’d hate to see Aldon suspended during the playoffs.

      • Wahwahwah says:

Did you watch the Monday Night game? Brady was hit many of times. No calls. In fact Brady has gotten ZERO roughing the passer calls. Try again, crybaby.

      • OREGONINER says:

        Tough talk never won games….

      • BOS9er says:

        WahWah
But he bitched to the refs after nearl every play. Brady the crybaby was complaining that he didnt get a single flag. He is by far the worst of all the qb’s in the league at crying to the refs its quite pathetic. He is too good of a player to act like biznich

    • 49erGirl says:

I’m looking forward to Whitner and Goldson sending a message to Welker and Hernandez – similar to the one Whitner sent to Pierre Thomas last year. I’m also looking forward to Tom Brady becoming another filling for a Smith sandwich.

I had this one circled as a L since the day the schedule came out. And the way the season is playing out, this match up is so heavily favored towards NE (especially in the media) you’d think they could just not play and chalk it up to another NE December home win. That’s why I think the Niners will win this week – Freddy P. Soft has gone on a visit to NE, and the Niners will come out with chips on their shoulders and find a way to win it in the end.

Gonna be a good one – can’t wait until Sunday!!!

    • Wahwahwah says:

Where’s your proof that the Patriots get favorable calls? Oh yeah there is none, just another loser with a loser mentality before the game even starts.

      • Chewie says:

All the phantom PI calls against Houston on Monday provided all the proof we need. Those Pats were running into DBs intentionally and then falling down and putting their hands up like whiny bitches to get the call.

      • Houston 9er says:

Gerry Austin with decades of officiating experience added commentary that the PI call against the Texans was BS. Need I remind you about the Tuck Rule game. On top of that Brady is such a Whiney little B he complains after every play. I take great joy watching him get lit up which is exactly what the 9ers are going to do to him. Hope he brings an extra pair of diapers with his Uggs because the Smith bros are going to knock the $hit out of him.

  7. Razoreater says:

Deion Sanders said, and I quote, “Brady is going to carve up the 49ers Defense Sunday night like a holiday turkey”. We’ll see….

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

      Actually he said:
“Brady is going to carve up the 49ers Defense Sunday night like a turkey in the hood”

      • Razoreater says:

        You think he’s right?

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

No. I think that Brooks and Aldon are going to crush Brady over and over and over and a few times PWilly or Navorro will get to him. From what I’ve seen, Brady doesn’t handle that kind of violence as well as, say, Eli Manning.

That said, if they can’t hit Brady, it’ll turn into a shootout, which might be very interesting. The quickened pace of play is concerning.

      • dangle says:

Getting hits on brady is key to beating him. he doesn’t like to get hit. But he is also among the best at getting the ball out before getting hit, like A. Rodgers. But they sacked rodgers 3 times this year, so maybe they can get there early against brady too.

    • drsgrosse says:

I like the D to hold its own. It’s the O that concerns me.

  8. Houston 9er says:

    Grant,

There are rumors among some people in the league that Mike Nolan left the Broncos after only 1 season because he didn’t want to be part of the illegal tactics Josh McDaniels used regularly when he was the Broncos coach. These tactics obviously were taught to McDaniels by Belichek. Couple of questions for you to ask Harbaugh,

Are the 9ers taking extra precautions to ensure their practices are not being filmed by the pats?

Are the 9ers taking any action to ensure the Pats are unable to listen in on the 9ers headsets during the games to intercept play calls?

Are the 9ers in contact with Nolan or any other coach that might have inside knowledge of the Pats cheating to determine any precautions they can take to prevent their game plan and play calls from being compromised?

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

      Name your source

    • Razoreater says:

Sounds very plausible, given the track record of BB and the sudden hush hush departure of Nolan.

      • Houston 9er says:

Belicheat hasn’t won a SB since he was caught red handed cheating. He’s desperate for another SB so it wouldn’t surprise me to find out his cheating has reached new heights.

      • dangle says:

I wouldn’t put cheating past any HC in the league. The old saying goes: If your’re not cheating you’re not trying. I also don’t like McDaniels… but…
Nolan has had 4 or 5 jobs in the past 4 or 5 years. I wouldn’t take his leaving a job as evidence of anything.

It would be interesting to know if there are any extra precautions made against belicheat… but Harbaugh would never tell you either way.

  9. DS94everXev says:

Seems to me that Steve Young isn’t sold that CK will win, until, you know, he actually does against good teams.

Good thing he isn’t a blogger here. He’d be assaulted as a non-fan, stupid, full of BS, a hater, etc.

Those who hate those who want proof first, better take a good look at what Young said, then themselves. Then what they have said, and more exactly, how they’ve said it.

    • Prime Time says:

We need a win in the worst way possible! Serious playoff implications this weekend. The defense you know will do its part. Not sure we will have to score 30, but nothing encourages me on offense except Gore and our run blocking online.
We win this one by turnovers on defense and Gore having a buck fifty on the ground.
      49ers 28
      Pats 13

      • DS94everXev says:

That’s the thing Prime. It is easy to stop the run. Just put more in than they can block.

I also really would like to see one of these explosive plays happen early for a score. Our offense needs to come out rolling. The Niner defenders have more or less said that. No more of this 7/7/6 offensive points in the 1st half thing. We aren’t playing a team who knows how to lose games like Miami. We’re playing two teams who know how to win. That is a big difference from the past 3 weeks.

      • Prime Time says:

Like I said, our offense blows right now!

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

CKs first 4 games provide a pretty good sample of what he’s capable of. It is clear that he can do things with the ball that Alex never could. As Lowell Cohn pointed out, however, if the Niners do not Kaepitalize on his transcendent skillset, if they continue to play this conservative offensive football, then they are wasting his talents, and that is inexcusable. It certainly doesn’t justify benching Smith.

I suspect that this game will mark a new direction in playcalling philosophy, and will highlight CKs skillset for the first time.

      • Prime Time says:

I liked CK in the Bears game.

        A mulligan against the Saints.

        Alarming against the Rams.

        Flukey against MIA

So this game and SEA next will answer if he is the real deal. It should play out like its suppose to. I mean this is the perfect scenario to see CK under the lights, SB preview? Who has it better than us?

      • dangle says:

Ha! Syco is “kaepitalize” a lowell-ism or did you make it up. I love it

      • MidWestNiner says:

I suspect that this game will mark a new direction in playcalling philosophy, and will highlight CKs skillset for the first time.

Unlike our offense changes into the Packers offense I don’t see this happening, especially with Roman as the OC.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        MWN

Roman’s been talking an awful lot about the Ault offense, and we’ve been seeing more and more of it.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        Beefcake

The only thing that will show that CK is the real deal is when and how soon he wins a Superbowl and then how many he wins. That’s it. There is no other standard.

      • MidWestNiner says:

But not much more than that. Roman hasn’t done anything yet to indicate that he’s shifting out of a conservative offense. Actions speak louder than words.

      • Calistoga Red says:

Syco – “transcendent skillset”? Really? After 4 games? I think that’s a bit extreme. While he’s been decent (great against CHI, but ok the rest of the games) we haven’t seen anything from CK that hasn’t been seen in the NFL before.

    • dangle says:

DS thats not news. Young said all along that Alex should have been reinstated and Harbaugh handled it terribly.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Dangle

News or not, a lot of bloggers here would be hating on our HOF QB for no real reason. That is my point.

      • bdubbs23 says:

When was the last time Gore ran for a buck fiftey? We are going to have to win this game in the air…. big plays downfield to moss and davis. Lmj may have to take a kickoff to the house. I think we can put 30 on the board. Kap dropped 30 on bears and saints. Also 27 on miami who’s defense is not bad.

      • bdubbs23 says:

      • dangle says:

DS yeah your probably right. Some people are just stupid and therefore lack the mental faculties to perform logical processing as well as the ability to recognize that process in others. Don’t forget that just under half of the population has below average intelligence… scary thought

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        BDubbs

At some point this season CKs running will be a weapon from the beginning to the end of a game. Maybe this game. Just let him rip off 10 yard chunks before sliding down or going out of bounds. It will happen against a team playing man to man, so if the Pats play Talib Island on one side of the field, the Niners could combat that by isolating the WR guarded by Talib and sending him deep, leaving vast spaces for the CK to run.

      • Prime Time says:

Runnin QB’s dont work. Ask Cam Newton.

      • dangle says:

Prime, forget cam, he’s just a better looking Jamarcus the burrito Russel. What about Big Ben? He’s a mobile type QB that has rings and long term success. Thats the style I think CK should try to emulate (on the field… no raping). Primarily he extends the play while looking downfield and the receivers just scramble the whole time after the pocket collapses.

      • MidWestNiner says:

        Runnin QB’s dont work.

        What about Aaron Rodgers Prime?

      • bdubbs23 says:

Syco… I think Kap will rush for at least 60 yds on extended plays and scrambling. Maybe add another 20 on designed runs in pistol. I don’t see Gore rushing for a lot of yds up the middle vs pats. I’m hoping this is the game we find out LMJ is a future star in the making. Lmj and Kap both played in cold weather conditions in college and it didn’t seem to slow them down. I just hope Roman doesn’t call another conservative game.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        Beefcake

Evolution is a scary b*tch, I tell you!

        Boooooga woooooga

      • Prime Time says:

Good idea Dangle, I will take a clone of a more athletic Big Ben.

Midwest, AR a running QB? No way?

Forrest Gump was an idiot. But he had manners and was a descent human being. We’re on a public blog, so I don’t expect everybody to have the same knowledge. Some here know more than me, some less than me about the team/football.

The things that are said by some here which is unprovoked though is what sucks. Not their lack of knowledge. If you grade knowledge…it will fall apart.

        Anyway, back to football.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

I don’t think it’s on Roman. I think the Harbaugh DNA is inherently conservative to a fault. Still waiting on Flacco/Rice/Dickson/Pitta/Smith/Boldin to do something. Let a great D go to waste for years now.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Dangle

Sorry. But nothing about CK is similar to Big Ben. Their body frames differ a lot. How they move and buy time is just as different as it comes. Between Cam and Ben,CK shares a lot more with Cam (fast, lanky) than Ben.

I haven’t seen 280-300lb DL struggle to take CK down like Ben.

      • dangle says:

Conservative is not the ravens problem Syco, almost the opposite. They connect some deep bombs to torrey smith and forget to feed ray rice.
        btw, are you Neanderthal?

      • bdubbs23 says:

You don’t last long in the nfl with running qbs. They can’t take the hits even though kap is 6’5′ 235 lbs. Vick did it for awhile in the beginning of his career and he’s smaller than kap. Rg3 and vick both don’t weigh as much as kap. Cam newton can get away with it because he’s 250 lbs. Kap showed in the bears game that he can stay in the pocket and he’s not just a qb looking to run first.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Note

CK had less than 10 yards rushing last week prior to the sell-out 50 yard run after 3-4 rush attempts. The Miami QB had more yards till that run. Keep that in mind. CK wasn’t at all exposive running the ball that game till then, when Miami had to sell out

      • dangle says:

        DS
apology not necessary. Ben: 6’5 240, CK 6’5 233. They have a lot more similarities to each other than most other QBs. Ben is certainly thicker/stronger, but stylistically both are good at eluding pressure in the pocket, and, aided by their height, size, and arm strength, look downfield to make throws while doing so. It is an athleticism and elusiveness that they both have, combined with arm strength that is where I see the comparison.
That attitudes between Cam and CK are polar opposites.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That is a good comparison Dangle.

      • DS94everXev says:

Ben is close to 300 lbs. That listed weight isn’t correct. I’ve heard DL complain that he’s as big as they are and weighs almost the same. That is why Ben can still throw the ball with DL on him. He’s not small. Haven’t seen CK do anything like Ben with DL on him. Not even close.

That listed weight was like Bubba Paris listed weight. He was WAY over his playing weight. I’ve heard him say so.

And for what it’s worth, my spouse who is a Steeler fan doesn’t think they look/play the same nor are they only 7 lbs separating the 2 QB’s.

Arm strength is the only similarity I see.

      • dangle says:

I know listed weights and heights are frequently muffed, but what are you basing 300lbs on? And either way, I’m not trying to debate how much ben weighs…if Kap is faster and more elusive he won’t have as many opportunities to throw with Dlineman hanging on him. The attitude, playing style, and philosophy is what I was going for.

      • dangle says:

and when you watch Kap play, he breaks tackles in the pocket similarly to big ben. good night

      • 23jordan/ says:

        BS,

Big Ben weighs 280 because you’ve weighed him at training camp or in your lap? You’re a dumb ass. You don’t know what anyone weighs. Provide a link dumb ass.

  10. EcoEnrico says:

December 2012 – don’t worry folks, the end of the world is coming :)

  11. Josh says:

I guarantee the Patriots are going force the run to begin with. If the 49ers stop it completely, they will build momentum, especially if they keep the first drive scoreless. Kaepernick MUST score on the first drive, anything… If the 49ers can stop the run game again, and perhaps a sneaky play action pass, and hold the Patriots to a field goal. From then on out, we must score each offensive possession. When Brady starts to throw after half, Justin Smith must dial up pressure so that Aldon can run over Nate Solder if he has enough juice that day. This will put immense pressure on Brady. If our guys can cover the middle of the field slants, the LBs can possibly knock down some passes themselves. This will put the game on the secondary to wrap up their guys if and when they get open. I doubt there will be any interceptions. But if the secondary can buy enough time with great coverage, the Smiths will introduce Brady to the ground. In this way, the 49ers could gain the momentum. By the 4th quarter, Frank Gore MUST gash for big yards and keep long drives going. Kaep MUST score a TD in the 4th quarter, either with his legs or a good pass. If this happens, I think the defense stops the Patriots and we win the game. A lot of “if”s. That’s how I see it going in a win.

Another brilliant outlook by bs. Because the offense had to score 30 somehow its on Steve young doesn’t believe in ck. hmmmm I would think like any normal fan that he doesn’t believe in the defense. But hey ds isn’t a hater, it loves loves loves the coach,qb,and best reciever on the team. What a mind reader.

  13. Sean in Canada says:

Although it was week 2, the Cards held them to 18 points at home. Brady threw for over 300 but only 1 td and 1 pick. They had a bend but don’t break thing going on forcing 5 field goal attempts and holding the Pats to 33% third down conversion and only 1 of 3 in red zone efficiency.
The Pats are definitely rolling better now but even against the Texans after jumping out to that big lead they had 3 consecutive 3 and outs but Houston was so inept on offense they couldn’t get back in the game. The opportunities are there against great teams but they have to be capitized on.

    • Nick says:

      I agree Sean,
The Houston offense was very erratic. Their QB Shaub – who is normally an accurate passer – was very inconsistent and inaccurate. If the Niners can move the ball – even if they don’t score – will be effective in winning time of position and field position battles. I get the feeling that this game will come down to David Akers making a few high pressure FGs.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Kaepernick’s ICBMs would wreak havoc on the ducks Schaub was throwing up last week.

  14. old coach says:

Wow if Young is right this game will be a great test as to whether CK is our QB going foreward. I do’nt want to hear any yeah buts about CK if we win and no Kap excuses if we lose. He needs to step up and do the job. Go Kap Go 9ers

    • 23Jordan says:

      Old coach

Hes going to be the qb regardless oc how this game goes. I dont know so many people are trying to create so much hype. This is not a do or die situation for kap. Im sure he Isn’t concerned about it. I like the composure hes shown in the games he played In so far. I expect the kid to play well because hes ready and hez got a good coach by his side.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Well if Kaepernick craps his pants like AS did against the Giants then maybe he would get pulled to save his confidence. But I just don’t see him losing his composure that way.
My biggest thing with Kaep right now is the clock management. That will get cleaned up.

      • 23Jordan says:

        Bay,

Id bet my right arm it wont happen. The kid is ready for the moment. Its not too big for him. I want to see him use his legs to get short yardage on 3rd down if he has to, in order to keep drives alive. I remember Steve Young being the master at that. Hed fake the dive and roll naked boot and be one on one against the d end. He hit the tight end or run for it. CK is an ex baseball player and he knows how to slide. Lets showcase all his talents on his biggest stage so far in his young career.

    • ninermd says:

What if he lights it up and Brady shreds out defense and pulls out a win? I don’t think there is a question as to who the qb is going to be. Alex smith isn’t coming back. This game will test the whole team. Especially the defense. To see if the team is Superbowl caliber. Now if the 49ers lose a close game it doesn’t mean they are done and can’t win a Superbowl. If the patriots roll the 49ers then nobody is stopping them and they will win the Superbowl. Individually it will say where CK is. And GR also. His play calling will be under a microscope on Sunday.

      • 23Jordan says:

Good post md. This is still the regular season. You still have to perform in the playoffs. Its a great test for our whole team like you said. We’re up for it.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Maiocco said last night that the 7 games were to get CK ready for the playoffs. And after facing the Bears, Seahawks and Patriots he will be ready for anything.

      • old coach says:

MD do’nt you mean Harbaugh’s offense will be under the microscope Sunday. Roman is calling the plays that Harbaugh wants.

  15. ninermd says:

Mike Greenberg picked the Patriots. That means the 49ers will win. Wheeew!

    • old coach says:

I never even mentioned AS in my post and when i said ‘going foreward” i meant next year and beyond. we can have a discussion about CK without making it about Alex Smith. I do believe that this game is the ultimate test a good team on the road.

  16. old coach says:

For all you north bay High School football fans there is an excellent article on Al Netter in B. Padecky’s column today

  17. Ray says:

I have no idea as to who will win but please drop that “Won the last 20 December home games crap!” That took place over ten years and the only Pat who played in more than 6-7 of those games is Brady. Meaningless stat unless the uniforms are possessed.

  18. Tom A. Hawk says:

Don’t count on the run to win the game. Wilfork and Love and the D will shut that down quickly. If it gets close in the end of the game. BB will put them on O and give the ball to will Fork and let him smash through the 490era. Defense like he did in early season interceptions. Bill is know for throwing the unexpected against their opponents!!!
