SAN FRANCISCO – The 49ers lost to the Rams 16-13. Here is the grade for Colin Kaepernick.
Colin Kaepernick: C-. He did not play particularly well, but was sacked (3) and hit (5) too often and flushed out of the pocket far more than in previous games.
He had only 1 pass play of more than 16 yards.
He averaged only 6.5 per attempt, which is not a winning yards per attempt. 9.9 yards per completion is not a winning number, either.
He had no running game support, so the play action was not effective and did not keep the Rams pass rush in check.
Roman never adjusted to the 49ers’ complete lack of a running game, so Kaepernick constantly found himself in second and third and long. He still managed to convert 8-of-19 third downs.
Kaepernick also had 84 rushing yards on 9 carries. He accounted for 275 of the 49ers 339 yards.
Overall, he showed his inexperience today, and he was hampered by Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh. They were in it together.

Good assessment…
LMAO
If Alex had played like this, he would have been LYNCHED!
Why is Kap getting a pass??? (Pun intended)
Perhaps because this was only his 3rd game as a starter.
Only his 3rd game!?!?!?
But HE was going to bring excitement to the nines!
Who WASN”T having fun today?
Because Smith has had seven plus years here. This was Kap’s third start. There was plenty of blame to go around.
Ya, it’s hilarious to me. You have on QB who has the team Super Bowl bound, 5th best rated in the league, 1st in efficiency, ridiculous win/loss record in the last 2 seasons, and is even showing that he’s improving. Then you get a guy who just single-handedly threw a game, won the previous one with mediocre stats and got an earned-tie in the one before that – and people want to give him a pass and an excuse. Giving the other team 10 points to lose the game is an F. I like Kaep, I think he can be the future, but now he’s staring at a pack of wolves because it was just too soon and too political. We saw this mess before with the Troy Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan and Tim Rattay ever since Garcia got the boot. I just don’t understand why people here want to repeat it. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Lucky for us, Alex is a better man and won’t hold anything against anyone.
Lets see Grant you say niners are going to blow away the rams. When they lose you grade down are qb. Maybe we better start grading you. You might lose your job to your dad.Do us a favor just report facts not your ideas.
Amazing that no one has zapped Kap for not staying in bounds on his last run – with 1:30 to go. Had he done that, he would have either forced SL to use their last timeout or run 40 secs off the clock.
Yeah the pitchout error stands out – but I forgive players for making physical mistakes. It’s the brain-dead mental ones that you can control (false starts, etc.) that are unforgivable.
Had Kap stayed in bounds, SL wouldn’t have been able to drive down the field and scored that winning touchdown. For sure
C-? Kaep deserves a D or F. He is a main reason we lost. He personally gave the Rams 8 points. To give him a passing grade is ridiculous.
the safety was not a safety. The refs f’d it up.
He still shouldnt of dropped 17 yards back form the line of the scrimmage into the end zone
Coach took that call on himself (and Roman). “Too risky”.
CK still has to execute the play and pitched it way over Ginn’s head. I could see the argument against the play call if the ball had hit Ginn in the hands, or Ginn was dropped for a loss, but the play call had nothing to do with the execution of the play.
JH saying it was his fault is typical coach speak for not throwing his player under the bus.
Agreed. CK7′s performance was an F.
QB is still the weak link on this team.
He’s raw – those mistakes are going to happen. I just can’t believe the coaching staff decided to try him this year.
Agreed, Kaep is the future but today is the present. A whole off-season is needed to learn as the starte. Four gam: Rams (1) he’s overwelme, Bears he looked great against D that prepared for Smith, Aints he put up a few points againt the worst D in the league who prepared for him, Rams (2) he loses the game by scoring more points for the Rams than their QB did. Smith isn’t superman but he doesn’t lose the game for us and that SHOULD be enough when the D gives up three points over sixty minutes. Wasn’t today, thanks Kaep.
This is going to costs US the the SB. Frankly I think JH doesn’t trust Kap that much either, unless I missed a bunch of Loooooooooooong passes………….
agree, Grant. if DW makes the easy catch, or if Akers hits the last fg, this is just another ugly win on the road against a tough divisional opponent, and its just growing pains – but growth – for Kaep.
the pitch play was a mistake, but he didnt make many in only his third start. He made some great throws and great runs that his predecessor couldnt make, and we know that he can handle the ball control drives Alex evolved to handle. We’re going to need Kaep’s upside in the playoffs.
Like all those DEEP passes he made today!?!?
The WR’s were wide open every time deep. I could see it on my TV.
Oh my God DS. I just pissed myself!
My Grade is close to yours Grant I would Give him a D. The crowd noise had him out of sorts The errant pitch was a play that should’nt have been called but i believe he paniced and launched it. running out of bounds was un excusable, it why game management is way under appreciated. All that being said i still believe he is our QB of the future but maybe like i originally thought the future should have come next year.
Also his accuracy fell off in the fourth quarter and in overtime. In overtime they had to use their two timeouts because Kaepernick couldn’t get the plays called. It seemed that the Ram’s defense was confusing him.
Kaepernick’s last two games are indicative of his inexperience and the accumulation of Kaepernick film for defensive coordinators to use against him.
There are reports that a sizable contingent of 9ers fans occupied the dome today. So no, no crowd disorientation in our assessment…
Youre officially a homer. He gets a d easy. The safety and the flip are F- alone….
I agree that the 49ers play calling was poor, and their lack of run game put Kap in tough down-and-distance situations. But he didn’t throw an interception, and although he executed poorly on that pitch to Ginn, why in the world was that play EVER called in that part of the field, in that time of the game? I thought he played fine for a QB who spent most of the game running for his life. And if not for Akers’ second choke job, or Delanie “Mano de Piedra” Walker’s drop, he would have walked out of there a winner.
I think Ginn was a relief on that play and not the intended ball carrier. The play was probably for short gain to a TE. Of course OC Roman would more than likely be the center piece for explaining that one.
Doc
Fudge
Excellent post bro. He made some mistakes bht he still gave them a great chance to win the game. Delany simply is too inconsistent to have such a major role on this team. The easiest catch he has all day and je drops the ball. Inexcusable.
>>he still gave them a great chance to win the game.
You are talking about Kaep’s gifts to the Rams here, right?
Such a happy Smither today. But Alex isn’t coming back. So sad for you.
>>But Alex isn’t coming back.
You’re probably right. But these guys today are giving so many excuses we could use in his defense if he ever did.
Kaps QBR was 82.4 interesting.
Fudge! Man, i haven’t seen a Fudgehammer post since the old 49er fanstop message board days with moxie, foshman, gr back in early 2000′s! Best niner message board ever, intelligent posts, great mature debates, man i miss those days! Too bad it went under. :(
Yes, Mike Sando pointed out Kap’s very solid QBR. He completed over 60-percent of his passes today despite several drops (including one in the end zone by Delanie W) and converted a bunch of clutch third downs. I’ve been going to games since the 1970′s so I’ve seen a lot of 49er football, and I have a great memory for the games, especially for those from the late ’70′s through the Montana years because I attended almost all of the games at Candlestick during that era. People think Number 16 never had a bad day, but he had plenty of them, and sometimes the defense bailed him out and sometimes it didn’t (as it didn’t for Kap today). I remember the defense bailing Joe out of a game in ’81 at Pittsburgh, particularly Carlton Williamson, after Montana thew a couple of INTs, one which was returned for a long TD by Mel Blount. Yes, even the greatest of all time gave away some TDs to the other team on occasion. I saw Montana throw 4 INTs against an inferior Bengals team at home in ’84, and thanks to the defense (Lott had a key INT) rallied the team late. QBs have so-so days, even the best ones, and these unreal expectations for Kap — that he’s going to put up Madden Football numbers every week — are just not grounded in reality.
Fact is — Kap DIDN’T play that poorly, especially considering the fact that the running game was MIA. And if Akers makes that damn kick, it’s smiles all around. These games happen in a NFL season — don’t forget how many games like this that ’88 team lost, especially the one in AZ on the Roy Green TD with seconds to go, a game which I also attended but wished I hadn’t!
Yeah. CK accounted for all the points. Problem is it was for both teams.
“People think Number 16 never had a bad day, but he had plenty of them…”
Careful, there are those here that will have exploding heads over this. This was brought up before in the Smith conversations and what we got was a lot of righteous indignation: How dare you compare X to Y.
I remember those years very clearly and I agree with you, there were times when Montana was NOT perfect. They all have rough games.
Adam – I also remember a rainy, miserable day at Candlestick in 1981 when the lousy Browns came in and Montana got called for an intentional grounding in the south endzone which resulted in a safety. (Very much like Kap’s safety today.) It was a terrible day all-around for Joe, and Reggie Rucker beat us late in the game with a TD catch. I was a teenager and I remember being so bummed on the ride home from Candlestick because we all felt it was a game that the 49ers should have won, but nobody after that game was pining for DeBerg and I’m not pining for Smith today. Kap has greatness in him.
Oh yeah, there were people on both sides of the Montana / DeBerg deal. I still have newspaper clippings from those days. I need to pull those out of my Niner stash – haven’t thought about that for a while. I’ll see if I can find those and post some stuff that might actually be interesting.
There were opinion columns going both ways. It’s eerily similar actually. Mooch and Bono tonight calling for Smith, Neon Deion disagreeing, yada yada.
This won’t end for a while.
That’s why Walsh traded DeBerg before the ’81 season: it was the football equivalent of Cortes burning the ships upon his arrival in the new world. It meant there was no looking back. For this reason, Alex must go after this season.
I know it is tough to be partial here Grant because you are a Kaep guy, but let’s really look at the numbers. Kaep killed the Bears. He did. The Bear’s defense expected one thing, was caught off guard, and never adjusted. Against the Saints the Kaep was less than average. The Saint’s defense had their best game of the year AND the Niners don’t win that without Brees throwing 2 pick 6. Kaep was a solid “F” in this game. There is no excuse, even inexperience, for taking a 17 yard sack into your endzone. Even if the ball did cross the line of scrimmage, Kaep put himself in that position by running backwards 17 yards into the endzone. Up 8 points, backed up and with one of the best defenses the only thing you don’t do is make an ill advised toss. Kaep was average against the Saints and lost this game for the Niners. He has potential, but the last two games clearly demonstrate why Alex should have been the QB for 2012 and Kaep going forward in 2013…
Well put, I agree.
Doc
Kap’s exuberance after his run, showed his lack of concentration and experience. That kind of display would have been perfect for the WINNING TD, not for just a great play.
That’s where we need someone who doesn’t stop until it is over, like………..
I like Kap but he makes me nervous with his emotional displays. Every time they have been behind in the last two games he has looked rattled and worried. I think he’s talented and the future but I don’t think he’s ready for prime time yet. I would feel much more comfortable giving him this experience at the top of the season when adjustments can be made… but to put him in now… I must admit… I can’t see him taking the pressure of the playoffs let alone a SuperBowl.
And no matter how much you hate Smith.. he wouldn’t have made those 3 rookie mistakes that cost us the game.
CK played like AS today, except for a couple of throws and a good run.
I disagree Neal Kap is a better overall QB than AS but at this point he is a terrible game manager and that cost us a game today. Go Kap Go Alex
Old coach,
CK didnot have a good game, this was bound to happen but that lousy play with Ginn, was way too risky, we have a field goal kicker who now is useless, CK threw a great pass to DW, who flop it and could of been the winning touch down, it was ours for the taking, we were out coached in every facet of the game.
I’m a coach myself, and I respect your thoughtful posts on this sites, but I personally like a QB who takes care of the ball when in doubt and that game-managing is part of the job description. I believe that if my offense and defense both do their jobs, the QB does not need to take a lot of chances. With that said, I agree that Kaep should be the future, not the present. I don’t want to pile on the kid. He had a bad game. He’s still inexperienced. He’ll get better. But this isn’t the time to go through owing pains. As much as I respect Coach Harbaugh, I think he’s being a little arrogant to assume he can gamble with the QB position right now because there’s no guarantee that this team will be a contender next year. All it takes is a few bad breaks to change everything. It seems as though he’s trying to force the Kaepernick issue at this point, which to me is an even greater disrespect to Smith.
Kaep needs these experiences to get better. Hopefully it’ll be out of his system by the time the playoffs start. Also the coaches have to do their part and not put him in position to fail.
I disagree. Smith would not have been in the end-zone for that “safety.” He would not have messed up the pitch to Ginn. If Smith played today, 49ers win.
you are right
bull crap
darrell
AS has beaten the Rams quite a bit. Even when he/the team sucked he did.
The team doesn’t suck now. CK lost to the Rams.
If Smith plays they don’t call the option right there.
Lol alex smith is 100x better
And a backwards 20+ yrds run that resulted in the game loosing points
He wasn’t just hampered, he was hung out to dry by Roman and Harbaugh. He made mistakes, but even with them he was 8 of 19 on third down. Alex Smith was almost never that good. Roman’s playing calling has been bad since he started last year. I thought it was just conservative because of Smith’s limitations, but I was wrong. I would like to know how the Rams could completely pack the box and stop the run, yet we couldn’t try one deep throw. Were the Rams so good as to be able to stop everything, or was Roman unable to think creatively or with any daring?
Because even Kaep knows when something isn’t open. Most pass plays have a concept with multiple reads on the defense. If the deep defender stays over the top as he’s supposed to, you go to the lower level defender and read him. The Rams played good disciplined football today.
Jesus.
Lets start out with the bad. Kaep threw away a pitch. Basically a long hand off that should not have been called.
He also completed 42% of third downs today with some big time throws. He accounted for almost 300 yards. Passed for 65% and did not throw a pick. His QB rating was better than 6 of Smith’s starts from last year.
His offensive line was average today. Smith would have been sacked 8-10 times today easily. His running game subtract one run averaged less than 2 yards a carry. And his field goal kicker missed his second game winning opportunity in a row against the Rams.
The kid did nothing wrong to warrant putting Smith back in and it won’t happen. Kaep based on all of that gets a C+. The coaching staff has to put him in a better situation to win with better play calling. Period.
A very logical and astute analysis.
bingo, Bay. the third down completion continues to be better than Alex’s, even on days when Kaep is having a relatively tough day. Alex had 8 years to develop, and suddenly all the Smithers are crying foul after the kid’s third game!
Oh sorry, I forgot that this was Kaepernick’s practice squad so he can develop into a good QB someday…. OH WAIT NO, WE’RE TRYING TO WIN A SUPERBOWL!
Kaepernick was horrible. If Alex Smith played that way, he would be skewered. But the thing is, he doesn’t play that way anymore. This Kaepernick thing was such a pointless, worthless adventure by a rookie NFL coach.
Shouldn’t have been called? Thats what he does! He’s done it forever. Its what everyone said that was the other element he brings! He’s just not ready for the big time. He needs to man up and tell coach that he dont want to be the blame for the season tanking. It could ruin him!Kindly take the clipboard from Alex and wait for your time!
montana
You know I agree with most of your stuff, but asking for an NFL player to approach his HC and tell him to put me back on the sidelines?
No way. This is JH’s fault. His fault for getting overly excited after the Bears game. His fault for letting that excitement run over into the Saints game blinding him from the fact he only managed 17 points agaisnt a horrendous Saint D. And his fault for not putting 19-5/team captain/NFC player of the week back in there.
I agree though that this whole experience isn’t any good for CK nor AS. That by definition means it isn’t good for the team.
I’m with Kap all the way but you know as well as i do Bay turnovers lose games…….
Right. Sounds exactly like a Smither.
actually i’m a Kapper
when somebody states facts on this blog they are labeled a “Smither”
Smith would have been sacked 8-10 times? Really? LOL
The last time Smith played the Rams he was sacked 5 times before halftime. And he was supported by 7 yards a carry from Frank Gore.
So yes easy to assume he would have been sacked 8-10 in a whole game.
Bayareafanatic…I dont have a dog in this fight but why make up crap? Smith wasn’t sacked 5 times before half in the last Rams game..I was there and below is the stat line link….he was sacked twice.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7177
What are you talking about? He got sacked 2 times against them last time, Kaepernick was sacked 3. Last year in two games against them he got sacked for a total of 6 times. Qbs get sacked 8-10 times in a game very, very rarely
because making up stats means it’s true
Sorry guys correct. He was sacked 6 times in his last 27 dropped back.
Bay would’nt know the truth if it hit him in the face,,8-10 sacks?lol!!
Randy since I don’t know you, what double poster are u? Low life.
Bay,
Ignore Randy he is a Smither and is full of hate.
Bay has zero credibility when it comes to analyzing the performance of any starting QB for this team. He also has zero credibility when it comes to anything factual.
C+??? That “performance” was an F, and if he keeps playing like that we’re going to blow a good shot at a Superbowl.
I would not call the O-line average today. They had a very poor game. A solid “F”.
Kappy still gets a ‘D’ from me though. Terrible decision on the pitch play sunk him. GR gets an ‘F’ for calling it to begin with. That’s a play for the other end of the field. And more “F”s for GR and JH for playing for the 50-yd FG on a team whose kicker cannot make them right now. And another one for Delanie “Brickhands” Walker.
Take away that one awful decision by Kappy, and he wins with a C+ in spite of all other issues today.
And the Zebras get an “F” for the blown safety call, and the phantom helmet-to-helmet (only contact appeared to be on Bradford’s shoulder pads) called on Goldson.
Does anyone think that Kap might have held on to the ball a little too long during the game today? Instances like this lead to safeties and sacks.
I like Kap, but he is not ready yet, but he will.
No no, I do not agree with you. Alex Smith would have not been sacked 8 times, he would of just dumped the ball or threw It out of bounds. And as sure as hell if he had been sacked so much he would NEVER of backpedaled 17 yards nor miss a simple pitch, that was inexcusable by any standard. I’m guessing that this is going to be a situation a la Jets until and If things turn ugly they will turn to Smith. My prediction is that they will lose another close one to the Dolphins and get totally blow out by NE. THEN they will switch to Smith, which I believe will be a make or break for him, will he be fired up to stick to Harbaugh and beef up his trade stock (because either way I think he will want out of SF) or will his confidence be shaken and niners barely make it to the playoffs and lose in the first round?, this is a very messy situation that HarDOUCHE brought upon his team.
Juan, I repeat, AS WAS SACKED 5 TIMES FOR 35 YARD LOSS THE LAST TIME HE PLAYED THE RAMS. And he didn’t even play a full half.
wow, “Hardouche”? Harbaugh turned a perennial weak team into a 13-3 NFC Championship team, resurrected the much maligned Alex Smith, and now he’s “Hardouche”? i just gotta laugh at that…
@ bay:
Juan, I repeat, AS WAS SACKED 5 TIMES FOR 35 YARD LOSS THE LAST TIME HE PLAYED THE RAMS. And he didn’t even play a full half.
The b/s never ends with you, does it?
http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=321111025
Well, somebody was sacked 5 times, claude. You don’t expect him to know who it was, do you? We are talking bay here.
Who cares how many sacks AS took last year? AS won the game. Something he did 2 times last year. Something CK didn’t do once THIS year.
Just a thought here, Alex would have taken a sack before giving up a safety.
Doc
Your assessment of his performance is dead on. He still looked like a franchise QB today. Made mistakes, but he also put his team in a position to win . If Walker caught the TD or Aker made the game winning kick, Kaep’s game would be viewed in a more positive light.
That’s part of the business, QB get’s more credit than they deserve for both wins and losses.
But no coulda, woulda, shouldas, the Rams went toe-to-toe with the Niners again and finished the job. They have a good defense and a slew of high draft picks the next couple years. The NFC West is going to be a dogfight next few years.
I like Kaepernick a lot but no, he did not look like a franchise QB today. He looked hesitant and inexperienced and I was surprised to see it. I have great faith in Harbaugh and would never expect him to hurt his team with an irrational QB change but even he has to have had his confidence shaken by this game.
Colin Kaepernick looked like he lost his best friend in his press conference. Is his confidence shaken, sure looked like it.
>>Colin Kaepernick looked like he lost his best friend in his press conference.
I do feel bad for Kaep. He had to the share the Rams game ball with Legatron.
Forget my previous comment Bay, you graded fairly and are right on your assessment.
What’s Akers problem this year though? Anybody know?
Your a smart dude
agree heartily. Let’s say the fumble was 100% CK’s fault. Did he give up a 2 point play from the 7 yard line. Next drive his amazing run puts them in easy field goal range. He makes a great throw to DW who drops it. Next play DW holds and then Gore stumbles and all of a sudden they are in a maybe range on the field goal with Akers. He makes a great run to pick up 10 yards for Akers. Then the defense gives up a field goal, with a huge penalty mistake by Goldson on the sliding Bradford. In OT he lead great drive down the the 30 or so, despite unimaginative run calls by Roman. He made some miscues, but he also did a lot to help the team win. He cannot play qb and also catch the passes, not make dumb penalties on defense, and kick field goals.
It’s ludicrous to think that Smith would have been sacked 8-10 times. We don’t know how he would have done.
He played okay. That’s the eye test. It doesn’t mean he sucks, merely that he’s young.
We don’t know if Smith played and he checked out of the running play that was called.
The O-Line didn’t play well for whatever reason.
CK was accountable for the bad pitch and the bad safety.
We can’t compare CK to Smith of two years ago, only on his recent starts where he was playing well.
It’s not about Smith or CK but the current state of the SB contending team, where the coach decided a rookie gave him the best chance to win.
Maybe he’s right. Right now the team does not look like a contender with CK under the center. Not when they play the Rams!
No way. C-? Try D-. He personally coughed up 10 points. Average of 6.5 yards per attempt. Mr. Checkdown. Hold him to the same standard you hold Smith to.
Wow! That would’ve been a lot worse if it was AS’s grade. You would’ve mentioned missing Moss for a TD, you would hammered him for that pitch to nobody in particular. Running 400yds backwards for a safety would’ve been a no-no.
Making a QB change at this point affects the whole offense and we saw that these last 2 weeks. Super Bowl or bust with Alex or our season is done!
Harbaugh made the decision that it was indeed “bust” if he stayed with Alex, probably after the weak performance against the NYG, who he has to assume we’ll face again in the playoffs. The coach who stuck with Alex and raised him to his highest level made a decision based on everything he’d seen and all his football knowledge: to bench Alex.
Montana,
I thought he missed Moss as well, but that play was designed for manningham. He threw it on time. If he pump fakes, moss is alone. If he waits a second moss is open.
A goaline play is not designed for nothing but a td stop with the excuses. Experience is what he lacks
Seriously 23! Is that youre exact response if AS was QB today?
I remember the game where everyone said AS missed a wide open Moss. What I saw was Moss breaking into the clear just as AS brought the ball down to escape pressure. When he got to a spot to make the throw, it was too late. That got blown way outta proportion.
I’m a fan of everyone on this team, but I just want whats best for the team and Kaps time will come. Its not now in my opinion!
KP gets a C, did what he could, but our offense no matter who is at the helm, is centered around a run game not a QB, frank gore took too many carries and got tired, Kendall hunter is a vital piece of our offense more than anyone realized. We have lost our games mainly on our play calling… We go on a nice winning streak but we always loose these close games Becuase we get cocky with the playcalling… Not bashing on anyone at all, I love the coaching staff and all 53 players. We still winning the Super Bowl !
The 49 ers have a pattern 2 wins and then a loss or tie. If it stays as is we will get to the conf title game and lose.
Thanks for taking the time to do the calculations. As I watched “the pitch”, not to be confused with “the catch” or “the throw”, I was trying to estimate where this years pattern would get us. Did you include an extra play off game? It looks like there could be one.
Of course that means we have to beat the Patriots, lose to Seattle, and not play an extra game. I’ll settle for that, with the hope that the pattern fails in the championship game.
Well yea if pattern hold we win against pats lose in Seattle to Seattle and beat the cards and one playoff game which should be the divisional round assuming we get a first round by at 11-4-1.
I want to see LMJ next week, KH could stretch the field horizontally we needed that today.
We may have to have him active and a receiver too.
James and Jenkens
I would like to see LMJ, too, Coach. But, I’d like to see Dixon over Jacobs, too.
Just sayin’.
>>flushed out of the pocket far more than in previous games.
Isn’t that supposed to be a strength of his? Keeping the play alive with his feet? It turned into a drawback on the safety play. The only TD drive was rushing based. Kaep’s “laser” was not a factor at all this game
>>He still managed to convert 8-of-19 third downs.
And that improved figure netted us what? One single TD and more drives that bogged down. Methinks someone is placing way too much importance on that stat.
The biggest offensive crime was getting the ball at the 50 in OT and getting next to zilch. Two runs on first and second down were stuffed. Why so conservative then?
I agree, unless the coaches don’t trust their quarterback and felt more comfortable going for a 50+ yard field goal.
Do you think that our receivers have learned to stay alive for Kaepernick in such a short time playing with him. I don’t think you can practice that effectively.
Disagree ribico
Biggest crime was the…4th quarter turnover. The only stat that matters and the only one Grant ignores discussing because it would mean AS is better than he wants him to be.
Grant is flying back from St.Louis. He will have the inside story behind the story. Just watch.
Yeah, that was inexcusable DS. Three minutes to go, deep in your own zone, calling a pitchout with the QBs opposite hand. Similar to that play in the NFCCG. But that game was lost by Alex, right?
Grant wasn’t in St Louis.
Of course he was. Hardest working guy in the biz.
I love CK7, but I’d still give him a D. If we start providing the same excuses the Smithers always did, then we’re just as guilty. And no, I don’t think it would have been different with Alex, given that he was losing to the Rams the last time around. Let us see how the young QB handles this.
I agree. I didn’t expect them to win the Superbowl last year, or this year. I think it’s great to have the Superbowl as a realistic possibility.
During the peak of 49er power years, they were one and out three consecutive years. Montana, Rice, and Craig produced zero touchdowns during those three playoff games.
First off and for the record, I like this kid Kap. There is no doubt that he is the future of this organization and he did his job brilliantly this season coming off the bench and winning games when called upon. I do question coaching when a change is made mid season from Smith who has done everything asked of him and performed well as statistics have shown. His conservative play would have led to a win today instead of 9 points awarded to the other team. Rookie mistakes, such as today should only happen at the beginning of the season not the last two-thirds preparing for the playoffs and a super-bowl run.
Some of those mistakes: clock management resulted in two time outs. Field position and trying to make something out of nothing results, a safety and touch down. An opportunity to run the clock down, results ran out of bounds stopped the clock. The type of stuff that should not be happening now at this stage of the season.
This was win that was needed to help ensure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Other aspects of the game that left me in a daze, why did they not run the ball to help set Akers up for the game winning field goal? Also, no question D. Goldson is the best at what he does, but that tackle on Bradford giving the rams 15 yards in penalty was unnecessary.
By the way, did you guys see the Frank Gore block on the Kap 50 yard run?
As I mentioned before, I like this kid (Kap) but I don’t think he would be making these mistakes now if he had started the season.
Your thoughts?
Doc
>>why did they not run the ball to help set Akers up for the game winning field goal.
Doc, they did.
first and 10 on the Rams 37. F.Gore right tackle to SL 35 for 2 yards.
2nd down – F.Gore right guard to SL 33 for 2 yards.
3rd down – C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short left to M.Crabtree.
4th down – D.Akers 51 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right
Exactly, third down short left incomplete, resulted in a longer field goal. Maybe a yard or two might have made a difference.
Ya think?
No. Akers has been awful from 40+ all year. He still would have been wide right.
I thought CK would put an end to having to use a kicker. At least that is what I’ve heard here for years. That QB x will remove the need for the Niners to depend on the kicker because AS can’t score TD’s. Especially in the red zone. CK just happens to be the QB today.
How are CK’s numbers in the red-zone anyway the past 3 games? Are they substantially better than AS’s last 3 games?
Jack,
Yes, I understand that.
I too am having a hard time with Akers performance as compared to last year. Although, he has made some good kicks this year, so with the current history, if you know he is struggling and the 3rd down play will not result in a first down. Why not do your best to set him up?
doc
“…but I don’t think he would be making these mistakes now if he had started the season. ”
You’re right. And if CK had started the season he’d be the captain, not the guy backing him up right now and who was the best player of the week in the conference in his last complete game.
JH should have had the “balls” to tell AS then that CK is the starter. Instead he waits till we have the playoff run on the line, and then doesn’t even say CK is the starter. So much for the confidence build up there that would have supplied the kid had he done so. And this left your guy, AS who got you the HC award for you (Literally) in the wind. What a bunch of BS.
Did you see JH do the patting thing with CK? I wonder if CK was like “No way man. I saw what you did before with AS. I’m not falling for that same trap.”
Doc,
I was surprised by the move to Kaep midseason, but it’s too early to rush to judgement on whether or not it was the right call. Yes, this was not a good game for Kaep or the rest of the offense – for several reasons. However, I’d like to continue to give JH the benefit of the doubt about going with an inexperienced QB – especially given his past history of unexpected and ahead-of-schedule successes.
At the beginning of last year, who thought the team was going all the way to the NFC championship game with no off-season, a mediocre QB, a new HC and coaching staff, a bunch of rookies at CB, and no proven WR’s? Personally, I didn’t think we’d sniff the playoffs until this year.
He proved to all of us what great coaching and mentoring can do for a team. So, if he feels that Kaep is the best QB for the job, then who am I to question his judgement? He’s had success with every QB he’s worked with to date – that tells me everything I need to know about his ability to assess the player in that position.
Honestly, if he decides that Smith should come back in and finish out the season, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt in that scenario as well. I trust Harbaugh will always do what he feels is best for the team. He won’t always be right about every decision, but so far he’s been right more often than not.
Let’s see what happens against Miami and go from there.
He is human and a good coach, but this was a mistake. Only because he messed with a good thing and believed he could coach through the growing pains. BUT, week 13 says its too late.
49er Girl,
You know how many times the 49ers have lost 2 in a row under JH? This should’ve been a win. Think about this one. The Niners have NEVER lost 2 in a row under JH. It won’t change this week. Dolphins are in big trouble.
JH was trusted by EVERYONE on this blog when we were after him. He was the guy we all wanted. I’m sure you noticed who has second guessed his decision and now his coaching ability.
He didn’t make a mistake with his QB choice. Kap is not going to allow anyone to water down his moves. He knows what hes doing. We are just fine.
Brandon Belt would have saved us if but JH won ‘t put him on the roster.
what?
Kezar,
I believe Brandon Belt is a baseball player, where are you going with this?
It smells suspiciously like sarcasm. :)
To really keep it real in here its like this, the same arguments used for AS such as bad coaching, bad playcalling, penalities, dropped balls, sacks, missed assignments, also apply to CK. Its what a lot of us have been saying its not the QB problem its the offense as a whole. Yes CK made some bonehead plays, I have been expecting it. Running out of bounds is unexusable. CK is probably the future here in Ninerland but right now I would rather have AS playing the position of QB. The inexperience really showed, and we are a playoff bound team. I see more of these type of games on the horizon and its part of the growing pains of a young QB, right now we are in a race to win the division, I just think AS is a better option. This isnt meant to slight CK I see some real potential there but not right now.
Very rational. Look out though. These idiots will be calling you a “Smither”.
C for me, considering play calling and O-line. Kap put team in position to win game with clutch 50 yard scramble.
Then Akers chokes again.
49ers Week 13 grades: Cohn predictions – F
LMAO at all the Smithers cult members posts. They are so happy and giddy today that Kaep & the 49ers finally lost. They were cringing during the chicago win & bitching during the wins in the other game day threads vs chicago and saints predicting doom and gloom also but were wrong. Now they finally get the one loss from the 49ers to cry about. Expect this all season even when Kaep & the 49ers kicks @ss. They hate to admit Harbs is backing Kaep and Alex has no future here next year. Sorry guys that’s the reality.
Sad but true…
@ bay:
Funny, NinerNation’s description reads on your comments during the past season and a half when Smith was starting.
Hey Smithers,
I know you want to stand by your man, but it is over for AS in the red and gold, if he does start by miracle, it will remind all the non-smithers how inconsistently bad he is.
isn’t it funny you talk more about smith than any smith supporter on here
And now our Super Bowl aspirations rest on an inexperienced QB who makes bad decisions and loves to run. That is a formula for concern but you guys know best. We will trust your judgment.
just stop Neal…go get your kleenex because your savior did’nt come through…hahahahah
Randy,
Enjoy your win today Smither hater, but next week we will be back in playoff mode.
If Alex Smith starts, we might be back in playoff mode.
Great to hear Neal
And if we lose, we’ll be in do or die mode.
Funny. When AS was the QB we were fighting for the #1 seed. Now we are fighting for our playoff lives. Who is next? Miami?
Our D is fine. Of course they were perfect today and they still lost because CK gave away more points than the D allowed and we lost.
NE is coming up soon right? How does CK look going up against Brady after today? Better or worse?
See how AS was so good? He is consistent. Consistently won. And we didn’t like that. Like I always say. The grass isn’t often greener on the other side. It is often dead.
BS, Jim Harbaugh I trust, your QB knowledge is next to nothing loser, now get off that public library computer and hit the streets.
You’re a politician who never won a campaign, right Neal?
You didn’t bother answering any of the points I asked you about and turn this on its head into something that wasn’t remotely relevant to my questions/points.
As for BS. I’m liking that person more right now than I did 5 minutes ago. Anybody who gets under your skin so much, I like.
BS, you are shaking like a leaf, I am getting under your fur, but now it is time to watch the Walking Dead, kind of like the Smithers hahahahahhahahahhahahahahhahaha
Really? I’m pissed to be honest with you! I’m not happy the 9ers lost, I’m not happy that Kap failed. All I have ever brought up were concerns of what a young QB brings. I’m not head coach material but I’ve been watching football a while. I know how it works. I said defenses will figure him out and it didn’t take long.
Alex is a very good qb doing what it takes to win a game. The little things are huge when they are not there.
Really?are you so small minded to think that a “Smither” likes it when their team loses?Wow…
Enjoy the Victory Randy, next week the Niners will win
Neal…what victory???My team lost…maybe you don’t know that..idiot
Your a Smither, your a Smither fan first and your AS fan second.
Randy, it’s a feeling they know well when the team (rarely) lost with Alex the last two years. So naturally they project it on you. It’s what they do.
God Neal
You are so stupid and hateful your insults don’t make any sense.
How can anybody be a Smither fan first and an AS fan second?
Your hero lost this game effected you in ways nobody can understand I’m sure. Please provide us with more CK excuses. Like how the D didn’t play well. Or the WR’s didn’t make some nice catches. Or the poor field position for CK the whole game.
Go on. Provide them.
Exactly BS hater, it all meant the same thing. because you are not a niner fan, your like that annoying second cousin that nobody can’t stand, but we have to invite you to thanksgiving dinner and all you say is I told you so. Stop being a hater!!
>>Provide them.
I will.
It was that smither-camp Staley sabotaging the team. It was the coaches not trusting CK to be CK. It was my avatar picture.
Neal
You have a lot of people here who say you don’t do anything but throw insults at people. Keep it up. You’ll win that election that has always been out of reach for you if you keep up your current trend.
Everybody will think it soon enough. Keep at it buck-a-rou
@Neal……
Got some experience being that annoying second cousin that has to be invited to Thanksgiving Dinner?
Neal,
Your ridiculously ignorant comments are becoming even more difficult to read. Do you ever have anything intelligent to add to the conversation? DER DARR ALEX SMITHERS IS TEH SUCKYS! ITS OVER ALEX SMITH ALEX SMITH SMITH SMITH!!!!1!!!one!!
For once in your life, keep your mouth shut. You should strongly consider taking a break from the blog.
Neal seriously, you do need a break. Out of control now.
Short answer he gets an F.
He and He alone spotted the Rams 10 points, 10, TEN, 10!!!! Let’s put that in perspective… he accounted for more of the Rams points today than the Rams!!!! And if you think we got jobbed on the safety call, then he accounted for 50% of their points(is that better)? Great, he ran for a 50 yarder BFD, he threw a couple balls Smith(can’t/wouldn’t) throw BFD, we still lost and 99% of it is on the Kap’s shoulders. There is no argument that can be made otherwise PERIOD.
V.Davis still M.I.A.
R.Moss still M.I.A.
The offense, minus a couple of plays here and there, still looks the same.
Offensive points(last 3 games) 32, 17, 13
btw, points win games, not yards, not 20+ yard plays and not any other jag off stat you want to pull out of your …. ok taking a deep breath!!
Oh AND I swear if I here about Kap’s upside one more time this year!!! Folks upside=potential=maybe!! Its not kinetic energy, you cannot count on upside for anything in the NFL. There have been thousands of players drafted based purely on that one immeasurable, intangible, thing and 90% of the players never realize there potential, ever!!! So unless this offense starts looking like NE,NO(and winning) with Kap at the helm REALLY soon, against top tier teams, who cares what his f’ing upside is! I don’t want to hear about well “if only” the coaches or the other players or the crowd noise or he’s a second year player. Those reasons didn’t bail out Smith nor should they Kap!
full disclosure:
yes, I support Smith
yes, I believe Kap will be one hell of a starter for our team next year, his play and upside (damn I couldn’t avoid it) guarantee Smith will not be back next year (take that too the bank)
Well put.
Except one thing. CK did his best. It just really sucked against a D which doesn’t suck. JH didn’t. This lies on him and him alone.
Spotting the other team 10 points is “his best” come on dude! The coaches called that crap pitch play, YES, did the coaches also pitch it over the pitchman’s head TOO!!! Did the coaches also have the QB’s practicing a 17 yard scramble backwards and then attempt to throw past the line of scrimmage???
grudge
The plays called were ones he is comfortable running.
The signs were there last week. But a free 14 by the D and the fact the Saints D sucks made it appear CK is better than he really is.
Keep Trying BS, hes not coming back. I know its tough. He’s not coming back. It’s over, don’t fight it. It’s gonna hurt for a while but slowly breathe, just let it go……….. He’s GONE!!!! Bwahahahaha
Grudge,
Its obvikus by your post that you support Smith. You did see the gift TD that walker dropped? You saw the missed field goal? Those were game winners. So 99% of the blame is a bit extreme.
but if it was Alex,99% would be dead on..right Jordan?
Its obvious? I put it in the post!
So in Smith’s entire career no one ever dropped a sure TD pass or missed a game winning field goal, dude please! I will lower the blame to about 98% but thats as low is it can go! You CANNOT give the other team 10 points on the road and expect to win, PERIOD. Looking at the pitch play some say OH OH OH thats a bad play call, I say bad play call AND bad execution. At the very worst it should’ve been a loss of yardage ONLY! The safety plays like that happen, young quarterbacks make those mistakes, thats why I lowered the blame to 98%. The pitch play that was inexcusable, players and coaches. As for Walker and Akers, see above don’t spot the other team 10 points!!!
The other tidbit that isn’t being talked about(that I have seen yet) Seattle won today. And we are only a win ahead of them in the division now, whatever lead we had within the division is gone now and we still have to head up there.
Look I really am a team chemistry guy and if Staley was not happy, D. Walker went on the record he thought Smith would play, V.Davis(after 1 game) has disappeared again. We should’ve sucked it up with Kap(or Manning if possible) all year and let Smith go OR let Smith play it out(barring horrific play) and cut him loose at the end of the year. This whole f’ing QB thing is ridiculous at this point of the year!! Why you ask, because if winning with ugly/average QB play still counts as a win, see N.O game(and presumably a hot hand) what does losing ugly mean(see today)? What are those vets in the locker room thinking now about their Super Bowl chances, and that IS what they were thinking about, not just making the playoffs. It introduces a dynamic(or divisiveness) that just didn’t need to be there.
Grudge,
The head coach is the head coach for a reason. I’m gonna tell you something. I’ve seen every game Alex Smith played. I don’t ever recall a game where the kicker missed a game winning field goal when Alex was the QB. Cite that one for me.
The difference is we are talking about the game winning touchdown pass Grudge. That should tell you something right there about Smith. Tell me about that game when the receiver dropped the game winning TD from Late in the 4th quarter or overtime. Cite that one for me.
Hold on to that 98%. Show up next week like you did this week. What you need to know is that it wont matter. Colin Kaepernick is our starter now. We are not going back to Alex Smith because Kaepernick is the better QB. Sorry.
In Wash’s last year he wanted to stay with Young, but the 49ers blew a 21 point lead in the second half and lost to Arizona. Walsh had to put Montana back in and they went on to win his third Superbowl.
The only point I’m making is that sometimes a couch gets lucky, or in Young’s case, a quarterback gets unlucky.
Kaepernick should be the future, but how it happens may be painful.
EXTRA! EXTRA!READ ALL ABOUT IT!! KAEPERNICK NO LONGER HAS HOT HAND!!
Will he start?
Stupid, stupid comment by JH. Worse by a Niner HC ever.
Another cheering Smither.
Who knew a loss would make so many supposed 49er fans happy?
Another moronic comment.
You’re nothing if not consistent.
C-?
WOW! What does CK have on you Grant?
Give me a break. You gave AS a C- or worse after we won a game. CK gets a C- after he loses a game???? One in which he was involved in all points scored in regulation for both teams?
No wonder you like the haters.. You don’t differ from their opinions at all.
Easy DS, its just blog here, no need to get over excited as there are allot of opinions.
Although like your dedication man.
Doc
Dedication? More like obsession with Smith.
This has to do with Grant more than CK doc. He rarely gives AS an “A”.
And CK has played poorly for 3/4 games, and his lowest grade is a C-?
If you’re going to be a hard up tough grader for AS, you need to do the same for CK or any other QB. That is the message. And I’ve read this blog the whole time (before) Grant and I’ve seen this pattern of his.
If AS accounted for a single TO, Grant was all over him. If AS accounted for as many points for the Niners as he did the other team…take a guess what his grade would have been?
AS got a poor grade in the Title game for throwing 2 TD’s and 0 TO’s. CK in the past two games hasn’t even thrown for 2 TD’s a game and has accounted for 2 TO’s. Yet he gets a pass because he excites Grant?
Not fair. And I’m calling it out.
BS, Please shut up you are a embarrasssment of this blog and your family, how old are you, talking about freaking grades, who gives a crap, we lost, it was all AS fault, and we need to move on.
Who is BS
Since there is no BS, I’ll go ahead and speak for him/her. Though I certainly do admire this BS person the more it bothers you. Kudos to BS!
No. What are you going to do about it Neal? Get another Marino quote or reference?
typical Neal with his child like attacks..is’nt it bedtime yet..the adults are trying to have a conversation here
The big picture is:
- Realize. For good or ill, coach has made his decision to move forward with Colin Kaepernick as the team’s starter.
- Relax. This team just suffered only its third loss of the season.
- Revel: The defense allowed just 6 points in today’s game.
- Rejoice. Aldon Smith is a unique talent and a special player.
The D just lost a game without giving up any points in regulation with the savior QB leading us.
That isn’t something to be cool with at all.
Now your copying me BS, i said Alex Smith is your Lord and Savior, you pathetic moron.
savior is a little much, DS.
Superman, more like it.
ribico
Where did the “Superman” reference come from?
And Superman is a savior for the whole planet. Savior implies for a particular population, not the whole planet. So I disagree with it.
>>Where did the “Superman” reference come from?
Kap, singlehandedly, was going to revitalize the entire offense.
You coud feel the entire team, defense included, pick up their intensity when Kaep was in the game.
We’d finally start to utilize those big play aquisitions we aquired over the off-season.
Close games would be a thing of the past.
Big early leads would lead to our defense punishing the opponent.
With our newly dominant offense and shutdown defense we are the odds-on superbowl favorites.
Where have we been hearing this the last week? Sounds like a Superman to me.
I didn’t feel it. I felt worried with every drop back he would fumble the ball.
Not the type of excitement I want in my Super Bowl worthy team.
Automatic,
Just one thing, its actually 3 and a half losses, but whose counting, right?
Doc
Yeah, and 8 1/2 wins, too. ;)
I said earlier I would give him a C/C-. The pitch was a terrible play, and even though I think the play call was equally as bad he needs to take the blame. The intentional grounding call was one that you see not get called almost each week, but another bad play.
He also did a lot of things well considering the struggles of the line and running game.
I was thinking C-, I allowed for inexperience in my grade.
I agree Jack.
Kap made a couple of glaring mistakes today that directly cost 10 points. Some days that happens, but they were bad plays and Kap needs to take the blame for them (and to his credit, that’s exactly what he has done). He also needs to learn from them. They may have been bad plays calls also, but its up to Kap to execute. His time management remains an area of concern, and needs to be improved.
On the positive side, other than the above I thought he was quite good today. Made some very important plays, big third down conversions, despite not getting much (any?) help from the ground game and being under pressure a lot.
All in all, to me he looked like a young QB with potential that was making his 3rd start. Oh wait, that’s exactly what he is, crazy… there are going to be some growing pains. Despite the pains today, he put his team in position to win, and fell short because his teammates didn’t execute at critical times.
For those that say we would have won if Smith played – yeah, maybe. Who knows? And quite frankly, who cares? Game is done and dusted now, too late to worry about what might have been.
I will take this lost with a grain of salt, yea it was disappointing but CK will learned from it, the coaches will learn from it, perhaps we can sign that rookie field goal kicker that was competing in the off-season with Akers. We will be in the playoffs, CK won in the Super Dome last week somethng that AS has never done. The future looks bright, we knew these misfortunes would happen, but CK can do more in 3 games then the Smithers lord and savior ever will.
Yeah ok, keep trying to convince yourself of that. Don’t realize that potential can outweigh experience? Well today veteran leadership would have helped. Kap does not get that luxury to learn as we go cause unless you have not noticed, we are fighting for playoff seeding.
MIA won’t be easy. SEA and NE on the road, yikes! And another tough division game against the Cards where guys will be fighting for jobs.
Ok Neal everything looks so manageable! NOT!
The future looks bright? Define future! Next year? The year after? I want the damn SB this year and we look like we’re in the damn preseason with this offense!
As a 9er fan, I haven’t been this worried in a while! Our schedule used to look easy and now it don’t. And they all are gonna bring it if Kap is in there!
@montana
I want a Super Bowl this year for Gore more than anything else. Who knows how much longer he will be around?
just like we take all of your stupid posts with a grain of salt
Kaepernick hype is a joke. He’s a rookie. Jim Harbaugh looks like a rash, selfish buffoon for forcing this change and pretty much DESTROYING the momentum for a once Super Bowl favorite. I don’t care what anyone else thinks, this could be a lockerroom nuclear bomb. No chance I would ever trust Jim’s opinions or even his word at this point. The man has lost his mind. Stupid Jim, just plain stupid.
Yup. A lot like last year’s Linsanity. With a much shorter shelf life.
I was excited about the 49ers chances this year with Manningham and Moss to throw to, but now we have to wait around while Jim strokes his new little pet. It was never about “the team, the team, the team” it’s actually about Jim Harbaugh’s avarice. This same ridiculousness led to Josh Morgan getting injured, which came back to bite us big time in the NFC Championship game. I’m starting to think Jim needs a heavier hand from Baalke and Jed. Where is Jim’s short least?
Ya, lets just hope our coach is man enough to make another decision!
Wow now questioning Harbs manhood now too? lol. Even the alex haters like jordon etc..on this blog never slammed Harbs, Balke, and Roman the way the smithers are right now. What happen to “All In” and never question the qb guru Harbaugh? I guess its “do as i say but not as i do” for the crazy smithers clan members. lmao!
Is that all you got?
Looks like i hit a sore spot dead center huh? All everyone has to do is read your posts today to see how foolish you came across today. I’ll copy the urls for future reference when you stick your foot in your mouth.
You are a stalker huh? You do not want go there. We’ve been reading your idiocy all damn week!
You can copy url’s? Wow, I’m impressed!
What.. don’t want to go there? LMAO. Sorry truth hurts huh MontanaMan16? Just gonna point the url to your own words so you own up to them later. Are you scared to stand behind your words above slammin Harbaugh questioning his manhood & expertise? Don’t make stupid comments then son.
“Even the alex haters like jordon etc..on this blog never slammed Harbs, Balke, and Roman the way the smithers are right now.”
You either have selective memory or you haven’t been here long.
See comments when Jed took over and was hiring a GM and coach, I think you’ll be enlightened.
@ Adam
are you really going to go there? It’s true. The folks that don’t care much for AS NEVER turned on Harbaugh the way the Smithers are.
If any one group is being exposed this week as not being true 49er fans it’s this group.
Questioning the hottest coach in the NFL like they know better.
I actually like it because it exposes them for being bigger morons that originally thought.
This moment has truly traumatized this group. This small group of has beens will never get over this.
I’ll go there. I know right where those comments are.
Which ones do you want? The Lucky Sperm Jed remarks? The remarks about Jed hiring his buddy Trent Baalke?
How about my favorite: Baalke blew the hiring of Harbaugh and every team will now laugh at us?
Those are a good start.
And realistically, if any of you believe a word Harbs says about anything (not just the CK/Smith stuff) I have a bridge to sell. We only know what he’s doing through the media and he and the media don’t seem to tango real well. See what I mean?
I think he’s a good coach, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t buy a used car from the guy.
Wow, you forget that JH made AS. How many times – in his 6th year – was AS running backwards and fumbling the ball away, until Harbaugh came along?
And how many times did Akers save failed 3rd down conversion Alex last year? Now we don’t have the sure footed Akers to save either QB.
This is only CKs 3rd game, and he still made 3rd down conversions that AS could only dream of. Still waayyy more upside to CK, even right now
If JH would have been here when AS was drafted, it wouldn’t have taken 6 years. Try to move past that. AS and Kap have been with JH the same. No comparison!
Kaep required 5 sacks from Aldon Smith for a win, two pick sixes in a row for a win, and looked like Alex Smith of old, throwing a stupid ball for a safety and fumbling essentially for a TD, all under the “second coming of Bill Walsh”, Jim Harbaugh.
What did Alex Smith do? Oh yea, played pretty darn near perfect. And got a concussion. Shaking my head at all the Kraeptastic fools who can’t see this might sink the season. I feel WAY less confident about our chances with this stupid controversy that was created by coach.
AS and CK have been under the same HC for the same period of time.
And AS won 19 out of 24 games. Beating the Rams twice by the way. Not tying them or losing to them.
All you stat guys, how does CK’s compare to AS’s now?
MontanaMan16 says: “If JH would have been here when AS was drafted”..
Woulda Shoulda Coulda. If JH would have been here during that draft and being the qb guru he is… Harbs wouldn’t have taken Alex over Rodgers.
“AS and CK have been under the same HC for the same period of time. And AS won 19 out of 24 games.”
And AS was 2-1 in his first 3 starts under Harbaugh. Guess what, so is Kaepernick.
And AS beat the Rams last year. CK had 2 tries. And failed both times to win.
The Rams by the way aren’t as good defensively as the Cards or Seattle. The Saints handled CK fine and they are the worse in the NFL.
Maybe the notion that I put forth about the Bears just sucking that day has more validity to it now. You think Jack? Or do we have to lose another game to a sub 0.500 team to convince you AS is better. AS didn’t lose to sub 0.500 teams. CK did today. And if not for a great D performance in NO, he loses that game as well.
CK’s luck is running out. DW made some nice catches for him the past few games. Today, a few drops. And that is the DW who AS has had. AS by the way won with that DW. CK didn’t.
NinerNation says: Woulda Shoulda Coulda. If JH would have been here during that draft and being the qb guru he is… Harbs wouldn’t have taken Alex over Rodgers.
We’ve pretty much beaten that dead horse enough. Anybody with any football knowledge knows Smith was the right choice at the time. You can watch that over and over on the nfl channel. Hind sight is 20-20! And didn’t AS just beat AR down in his back yard? Are you a stalker by the way?
MontanaMan16 YOU brought up the past while inserting a fake scenario not me. I just responded. See? Woulda shoulda coulda is pointless either way.
We all love Jim Harbaugh because of the year he had last year, which was mainly because of the Defense he inherited from Singletary, and some great play-calling by Vic Fangio.
And now he has put the SB at risk. There are lot of young QBs in the league and playing well, but none who are taking over a SB contending team, which was a play from a SB, and had a QB who was doing well.
This is a tough one, and makes it hard to watch. I’m all for bold, strong moves, but if it doesn’t work, I don’ think Jim is going to go back. He said he was going with the hot hand, but it didn’t look like CK had the hot hand.
So it goes… Back to Halo 4…
In Harbaugh we trust! As long as the Precious is starting!
Lol
As long as we’re winning clem, as long as we’re winning.
This blog is almost hysterical when the 49ers loses (thankfully a rarity since Harbaugh took over).
Before were the so called Haters enjoying any chance to blame Smith.
And now is the so called Smithers enjoying the chance to blame Kaep.
And one group always criticize the other for being “happy” in a loss.
Only to do the same when given the chance.
Way to go “fans”….
You’re a joke.
Alex Smith was playing perfect. Kaepernick looked straight AVERAGE, if not bad, against a bad team, not once, but twice now. Jim Harbaugh will stick with Kaepernick so he doesn’t look like a fool. He won’t do what is best for the team.
CK is not a rookie, 2nd year in NFL, and if he is good enough to be named the starter, then he can de critiqued as the starter, and should be just like the former starter..
+1
1st yr starter
And? If he is the starter, then he has to critiqued as the starter. Did he have a good game? No….
If he kraps against the dolphins. Alex starts.
I predict CK will have a bounceback game.
Yay, consistency!
I can see a “we want Alex” chant nxt week if he kraps again.
Jeez, I hope not. When has a “we want x” chant ever produced a winning result?
I take that back. “We want McElroy” led to a HUGE HUGE Jets 7-6 win.
Why is JH trying so hard to tank our season.
We were doing great then he wanted to open it up passing against the vikings
We were doing great then he changed his conservative game plan against the giants who we almost beat last yr
We were doing great with Alex and then he changed the starting QB
I am very pissed.
A fair grade IMO Grant. While CK made a couple of bad plays (the safety was questionable), he put the team in position to win.
To me, it’s important to see some resilliency after a QB makes a bad play. CK showed me that he can shake off a bad play as fast as he can outrun a linebacker.
There will be the usual suspects here stepping up to throw their best barbs and blaming CK for the loss, but I’m impressed with CK’ ability to recover and still find a way to position us for the possible win.
At least it won’t be a boring week on this blog (lol).
>>At least it won’t be a boring week on this blog (lol).
Are you kidding? This is manna from heaven, the promised land, Nirvana, Shangri-la, Utopia (any more cliches?) for Grant!
The advertisers will love it. :P
I usually try to skip it anymore during the week.
Same garbage every week: get in the bunkers and throw hand grenades.
3 dumb mistakes
Safety
Fumble
Running out of bounds with 1:30 to go
Dumb stuff that won’t happen with an experienced QB
running out of bounds is by far the worst of the mistakes. the rams wouldn’t have had enough time to drive down the field and kick a field goal to go to OT. the other two mistakes were a combo of bad play calling and bad execution. not staying in bounds though was dumb
Grant
Most of the yards that came on the only TD drive came on the ground. Gore for one had several nice runs. So if the running game wasn’t there at all, how did we score a TD?
Last week 17 pts by the offense against NO, this week 13 pts against the Rams as more film on Kap becomes available. Trend? Wonder what happens next week against Miami especially with Gore wearing down. I guess JH and GRo have the same trust issues with Kap as they did with Alex via their conservative play calling (other than their brainfart trick pitch deep in their own territory). Please, no Alexcuses for Kap , he was given the keys to a team that was supposed to be a SB contender even with Smith at QB. Too much drama in the middle of a playoff run and you can bet Seattle is smelling blood in the water right now with this experiment. Hope Kap matures quickly or this year might not have a happy ending.
@niner61
Hate to bring it up, but does it sound an awful lot like Troy Smith? And this team is WAY better in every phase (- Akers). So, CK has every advantage that Troy Smith didn’t.
Smith had a great game against these very same Rams, then teams learned to keep him in the pocket, and don’t let him turn that corner quickly when he runs…and…he was benched for….Alex.
Troy Smith crossed my mind today, too. Didn’t want to say anything because CK is a better QB.
In the back of my head, I was thinking: curse of the 49er replacement QBs. They look good initially and then fall to pieces.
Adam
Please provide proof CK is better than Troy.
Troy won the Heismann. CK wasn’t nominated.
We all hope CK is better if for no other reason, than JH is the coach now while MS was the coach then.
In a counter point, I know AS will win NFL games. 19-5 says so. I know AS is improving. His last complete game he won NFC Offensive Player of the week. He had been nominated before but never won. So that proves he is improving and his ceiling hasn’t been reached. He is better this year than last and last year he made the Title Game.
CK has gotten steadily worse each week, not better. He wasn’t the first pick like AS and not a Heismann winner like Troy Smith. There is no data to support that CK is better than Troy was. And none to suggest remotely that CK is better than AS. Just the coaches decision. The same coach who says he’ll play the hot hand. And if CK’s is hotter than AS’s, we’d best dump both because CK is sitting in a -80 freezer after today.
DS,
Kaep is already 10x the player Troy Smith will EVER be. Who cares what Troy did in college? He was a late round pick and he sucks in the NFL, just like everyone knew he would.
Mentioning Troy Smith in the same sentence as Kaepernick is an insult to Kaep.
He has looked worse from game to game. Why? BECAUSE THEIR IS FILM ON HIM NOW!
Who said Andrew Luck and CK in the same sentence? Did anyone watch Luck today? Phenom!
It was interesting when they asked MC during this past week about CK’s passes, he said they remind him of TSmith.
Primescum,
While I agree luck is the best of the young QB’s, he had to put it up 54 times today and had three interceptions-.
You may know less than BS
ALuck 3 INTs = 3 points
CK’s fumble and safety = 10 points
Bay, how many come from behind victories has Luck led this year? Big picture small picture, CK is not even close to Andrew Luck, 54 times or not.
That is still an opinion LSX. Nothing that can’t be disputed as of yet.
Like I said. Keep in mind the quality of the team while comparing the two. Didn’t Troy start 2-1 as well?
Not that it matters. But Troy looked great against that Rams team. Prime is right. As more film is gathered and he plays better defenses, CK will have to get better to put up the same results. If he stays the same we lose.
To me. It actually looks like he’s gotten worse.
hof
You’re joking. Right?
ALuck’s 3 INTs yielded Det only 3 points.
I would give Kap a grade of B-…..I’d say this more of a team loss, when the running game can’t get it going we’re in trouble regardless of who is QB…
You got be kidding.
Why? He just repeated every Alexcuse made during the past 7 years.
Do those excuses only apply to the Precious?
What excuses?
You have to get over your ‘precious’ fetish. CK should be critiqued just the same as AS was….
Yeah, that whole precious thing stopped being borderline amusing about a season and a half ago.
clem, didn’t you notice that the “precious” baton had been passed a while back around here?
I gave CK an F, Txtree. He sucked.
I find it amusing that the same excuses that were good for Alex over the last 7 years are suddenly invalid.
>>I find it amusing that the same excuses that were good for Alex over the last 7 years are suddenly in vogue.
Fixed that for you, clems.
And have I ever made excuses? No…..
But I do find it funny that the same excuses are know being used by those who wanted ck as QB.
M67 – they are valid, it makes my point, doesnt matter which QB is in the same things that go wrong for AS went wrong with CK. Its not a QB issue its a offense issue. I saw the same Niner O when it stunk for AS as I saw for CK. Its not a QB problem. The offense stunk as a whole.
This Niner team is a Super Bowl team. The one AS took over should have been disbanded and sold for scrap they were so bad.
Kinda slight difference between the two. Making any real comparisons futile.
I hope you joking…
The team did watch as CK threw the ball 5 yards away from Ginn. Got us there.
Just watched the press conference with Coach Harbaugh. He did not look overly confident in naming Colin Kaepernick starter moving forward.
Did he name him or not?
Sam,
What did you want, back flips? He said Kap will start next week. Did you really see it?
Now that the ballon is punctured, can we all agree it’s going to be a hard , tough slog going forward? JH is likely going to stay with his chosen guy.
In Harbaugh we trust, but no more:
Kap, singlehandedly, is going to revitalize the entire offense.
You can feel the entire team, defense included, pick up their intensity when Kaep is in the game.
We’ll finally start to utilize those big play aquisitions we got over the off-season.
Close games will be a thing of the past.
Big early leads will lead to our defense punishing the opponent.
Who cares about a 2 game sample, opponents will not figure out ways to stop Kaep.
With our newly dominant offense and shutdown defense we are the odds-on superbowl favorites.
No more triumphalism from either “side”.
I suppose we should also drop “the coaches think CK7 is a better QB than Alex”.
Judging from the the coach’s pressers that’s one thing we don’t know for sure.
Actions Ribico. Who is the starting QB? Here’s a hint: not your Precious.
Whoever is the QB when the team notches a W is my Precious.
CK didn’t seem to be your Precious after the 49ers beat Chicago and New Orleans.
Today is the happiest you’ve been since Alex was benched.
He is and JH knows he is. MSC, I don’t know how you gauge Qb’s but keep looking, youll see it. I’ve seen it already.
Whatz really pissing me off is the rams offense scored 0 points and we still lost
They scored 5 – FG and two point conversion
It’s a loss. A few observations…
JH looks like he’s lost 10-15 lbs – pants and shirt were very baggy.
CK was throwing a lot of underneath routes to MM and MC. He threw a couple of really nice slants, on the money, especially the first one to MM for a short gain.
OL played poorly. They are built for running and not as much for pass blocking.
CK is very elusive escaping the pocket, but was caught a few times today for 3 sacks.
FG looked good in short bursts, but was not as effective without his change of pace partner KH.
CK didn’t seem as poised in the pocket today, often checking down to FG or BMiller.
CK seemed to look at one read and then run. He didn’t have the same pocket presence against the Rams today.
I don’t know why they didn’t call for more roll outs for CK today.
The safety was a borderline call, but why was CK running 23 yds back into the end zone from the 9er 18? A very poor play.
Grant and I questioned the playcalling of GR, but many blamed AS. Grant thought it would be fixed with the explosive CK starting, but now he again blames GR.
I’d give the coach’s an F and CK a D. You can’t give 10 points to the Rams and receive a C-.
Good fair post there, Hof.
a great post hofer
And when the defense only gives 6 points. Not much more you can ask for.
Sam,
U mean like a kicker to makes kicks and a TE to catch passes.
Good post
I am a big Kaep fan, and I have in the past found some of Hofer’s assessments of Kaep a little too critical, but I cannot fault his assessment above. I would also give Kaep a D. I do want to add that I think the one read then run instances were not significant overall, but since they are a concern for Hofer, he may have noticed them more than I did. I mainly saw Kaep keep his eyes down field and only run when nothing developed.
I would have given Kaep an ‘F’, but he did not make the typical big mistakes that young QBs often make when playing poorly – he did not throw interceptions, and he did not try to be the entire offense. Yes, the botched pitch to Ginn was a huge mistake, but there is blame there to be spread around — that play was a huge risk that near the goal line, and Kaep, who at Nevada rarely panicked, looked a bit panicked.
JP,
That toss play was an F. The rest of his game IMO WAS A B-. ADD them together u get a C- which is Grants grade.
Miller did look very good out of the backfield. I was impressed with that.
“Grant and I questioned the playcalling of GR, but many blamed AS. Grant thought it would be fixed with the explosive CK starting, but now he again blames GR.”
Yep, rather then take the time and do some objective writing he’ll simply throw the OC under the bus because he’s embarrassed he put himself out for a player that went and sucked eggs today.
Agreed the OC has a great record of W-L one of the best in the league honestly.
Hofe, in ths case, yes a grade C is fair. Giving away 10 points is inexcusable. I don’t believe anyone here is making any excuses for that.
But when you can quickly recover from those mistakes and still put the team in position to win, the C is good.
And I did not see CK get rattled or shrink back by the Rams pressure at all. The crowd noise caused a couple hic’cups, but CK never seemed to lose his poise or confidence.
I also believe that the Rams played exceptional defense and they outcoached our staff for the second time in two weeks.
Good post, Hofer.
Something I’m noticing when I dig in to this clock management problem CK is having: He looks like he’s having trouble identifying the defense at the line.
He seems unsure as to whether to check out of a play or not (kill, let it roll.)
I’ve noticed this several times now. He’ll let a gap rush play, for example, go ahead even though the defense runs up to stack the box.
An example of this “confusion” if you want to call it that is the time out he had to take after he’s killing and rolling and killing again. Big mess.
Most likely a lack of experience, he’s a smart kid and should know the plays by now, but he’s having difficulty reading defenses is what it’s looking like.
I think they’re relying on him to just get past the snap and then make something happen.
The other thing I’m noticing is the same trend with the O-line and receivers that we’ve had for a while now. Not enough time for the routes to develop in more than a few cases. They’re going to have to do something here to either emphasize the hot read slant back or break off these routes. The hot read helped Smith tremendously.
My big fear here is that Harbs was too rash in choosing potential explosiveness over ball security and field position.
The Akers deal is bugging me too. If this pelvis injury is putting him off his game, this could be an issue, he’s not getting any younger.
Enjoy your victory today Smithers, it will only be temporary, next week we will be back in playoff mode. The future is bright.
No victory for anyone.
Only (barely) saving grace is that the haters, if they have half a brain, will be a little more subdued this week. But I’d take a win and Neal and Jordo, etc. flinging their feces from their cages any day.
ribico..we are trying to have a battle of wits with a unarmed person
ah Neal…I still believe it’s past your bed time
Neal …A Niner loss is not a victory for any true Niner fan. Something you haters just don’t understand. Go back to your legos until then.
Smithers are not Niner fans first and foremost.
Neal,
Knock it off. Please take a rest you have nothing to feel good about tonight period!
The future is bright, true….but, in order to be Super Bowl ready, the 49er’s have to play complete football games the remainder of the season….in all phases of the game, including coaching and game planning. Hopefully today wasn’t an indicator of what we’ll see from the 9er’s in the games with New England and Seattle. Our offensive line has made a habit of pushing the opposing d-line around, and today that wasn’t the case. Come game time, it all starts up front with the lines…we lose the battle there. and it’s hard to win the war.
If the play calling by Greg Roman was really kept close to the vest because of a lack of confidence in Alex Smith, then, maybe it wasn’t a lack of confidence, maybe JH and staff prefer to play it close to the vest and mundane……..
@55
In regards to your last paragraph…
But that would mean that some here who can’t ever be wrong were wrong. Not possible I tell you.
Somewhere there’s a garage that wants its Tool back.
Relax, The sun will still come up tomorrow and when it does the 49ers will still find themselves leading the NFC West, and sitting in the #2 spot for the playoffs.
As recent history suggests the 49ers will come back next week and destroy the Dolphins, and all will be right again in 49erland.
All arrows… sideways?
All arrows are up for the Alex Smith fans. They’re ecstatic that the 49ers lost.
I haven’t seen anyone post joyous ramblings that we lost. Did I miss it?
I’ll take your word for it, this thread is getting pretty long.
Let’s just say, anyone, on any side of the QB issue who roots for the team to lose is a Tool.
Jack all week you talked like there was no way Kap would drop the ball or this opportunity. Well the complete opposite happened. The Bears and Saints game were tainted. No excuses but today we witnessed what happens when good coaching faces inexperience at the QB position.
You can’t ask anymore from your defense. The kid played poorly. It’s not his fault cause he should have never been put in this situation. Did you see how rattled he looked talking to the reporters? Not good.
Now he has some tough opponents coming up. Sure MIA should be a win but no guarantee. Then two tough road games and another to finish it off.
Be as optimistic as you want but when a QB cannot manage a game properly, a big arm and long running legs mean zero.
Prime
Miami has a D like the Rams. And an offense that isn’t all that much different from the Rams. This game could be a repeat.
Now that we have a sample from a QB another Smith i the Harbaugh era, we can get a better sense of our offensive coaching staff. With all these new weapons, our offense has the same old stench. We’re not making an adjustments.
JH is a stubborn mand and wants to be a the big bully, so don’t expect any changes in being run first, and conservative play-calling.
He may have worked miracles that first year but the other teams get paid to play too.
This year they were out-coached in the MIN, NYC, and the two RAMS games. All loses or ties. Can’t blame the players regardless who is under center.
They play not to lose….
DS surprisingly I have watched a lot of Dolphin games. They are not that bad. Their not great but it won’t be easy.
Prime,
I said the 49ers were capable of winning the Super Bowl with CK, and nothing from today other than Akers changed that opinion.
As I said, the 49ers still lead the West and sit in the #2 spot.
Jack,
I don’t see it. CK had one INT and a near INT saved by RM last week. This week the botched play to TG that cost the 9ers 10 easy points and the win. CK looked lost today. His poise was disappearing by the minute. His reads were terrible. Yes, GR didn’t help but CK’s inexperience will keep the 9ers from winning a SB period.
*+2 for the safety*
That’s okay Hofer. Your position on CK is well documented. As you like to say, “let it play out.”
Jack,
What do you mean? Please be specific.
Prime
How do you rate the Dolphins and Rams receptively?
Something to keep in mind people. The Dolphins are used to playing against Brady. So CK is a lot easier. Look at the past two weeks of film, and you’ll see how to stop CK. Stopping consistent (Brady), not so easy.
jack
Had AS played like that would you still think the same about us and the Super Bowl?
Hofer,
You don’t believe in CK. Many of your posts make that clear.
@Jack – what is there to believe? CK is no special QB.
Running to the sidelines does not make you Elite.
@DS – Miami is 8th against the run, without hunter our run game isn’t explosive.
We will need a QB that can throw the ball consistently in the pocket.
I feel bad for CK, if he does not put up huge number against miami (Win or Lose) he would be slammed.
I still don’t get why you don’t let the kid have a full offseason as a starter before playing him.
As history suggests it was AS who led those games. CK lost the third game. He has no history of winning next game yet. The rest of this team was decent. The D was awesome today Jack. The WR’s made some nice plays. Gore had some nice runs even if Grant thinks he didn’t. Lee smashed some huge punts for us. CK just stank.
Tell me a game in the JH era where the D played like this and we lost the game with AS under Center Jack? It never happened. AS wouldn’t lose this game.
And not a single thing in this game makes me think we will manage to win in Miami unless our D scores the points. Because shutting a team out in regulation clearly isn’t good enough.
Hey BS,
Gore had one run for 23. In hid next 22 carries he netted 35 yards. You still don’t know $hit.
I know you. Does that count?
DS,
Wrong. CK led the last 2 wins. Try again.
Not what I meant Jack.
AS proved to win the game after the loss. CK hasn’t. And his play today resembled one that would get you kicked off the scout team.
CK needs to prove it. Or rather JH needs to prove it thru CK. As I told you all week, JH did a huge dis-service not naming CK the starter flat out. What a shame. Shows he lacks confidence in both AS by not starting him and CK by not declaring him the starter. And the QB is the leader of the team. And a leader needs confidence or he is no leader. As you saw today.
Gore’s runs on the TD drive: 23 yards, 7 yards, 2 yards, 0 yards, 1 yard and the TD.
He also had one of 16 on the next drive that came back due to a holding penalty on Staley. And a six yarder in the second half wiped out by a penalty on Tukuafu.
But on the whole, he had a tough day, and it seemed to get tougher as the game wore on. You can check the play by play on the gamebook link below – I don’t see a run of over three yards the rest of the game. He looked pretty beat up late in the game, IMHO.
http://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/55688/STL_Gamebook.pdf
DS,
He already led them to back-back wins after the Rams tie. He already proved you wrong.
As I said in an earlier post grumpy.
Gore had that big run on the TD drive. CK didn’t “dazzle” anybody today. Without FG running wild he didn’t do a thing.
I thought that was a problem that was due to AS being the QB. That CK would fix it forever. Just like how we’d never have to kick another FG because we’d always score TD’s because CK is better in the redzone. So how can it be Akers fault?
Lots of people here put everything on AS. And I’m pointing it all out.
I think a comeback is really only meaningful if you win the game is it not?
Gee Jack. I feel so much better now. How about you?
Sam
I think Jack means that CK came into the next game and won it. So he’s proven he can win the following game after a Non-win.
But in no loss under AS were we this freaking bad. Especially with a dominant D performance like that. It won’t get any better and CK wasted it.
I feel fine DS. It was a frustrating loss, but it changes nothing in the big picture and I still believe in this team.
Good to know that you feel fine Jack.
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW. AKERS IS A SMITHER…
lol
Damn. That Staley, Delanie Walker, Akers cabel! Curse you guys!
Let’s add the whole Rams team as well.
Damn them for playing so freaking well.
I think I saw Amendola kicking some 49er shins from the sideline.
Maybe Jimmy. Maybe Staley and Walker are to? A complete conspiracy against Kap.
You are such a joke!
Smith haters just get dumber by the minute
NO that would be Kap haters get dumber by the minute. Or should we say niner haters? Sucks for you that Harbaugh is a Kap believer huh? :)
please post when you have something intelligent to add…oh,wait..then you would never post
OK, that was funny!! Thanks for the laugh on such a tough day :-)
Next week will be interesting, Akers has missed one third of his kicks this year, he is last in the NFL, 10 out of 31. Time for a change. Will next week game plan be better, Gore is beat up, time to share the rock with a couple of other backs. Can we get a vertical game back again and play like we did against the Bears. Can we avoid stupid penalities.
>>Can we get a vertical game back again and play like we did against the Bears.
Yes, lets hope for a tactic that has produced one win for us in the last two years.
Rib I will write a letter to every team we play from here on out and ask them to play man to man coverage. That way CK can use that big arm and not have to read coverages. This will surely get our vertical game back on track.
Ribico,
CK has a higer talent level and arm, that he can get a vertical game, AS is more of a dink, duck and sack QB.
Yeah Neal
Those passes that went to the LOS were great. Lots of zip. Making it hard to catch. I think there were at least 3 that gained no yards in the air at all.
And those down field throws….you start recalling them. I am overwhelmed by the sheer number.
And that yards/attempt stat that CK had over AS. How is that doing now?
And at the end of the day, would AS have won? Yep. Did CK? Nope.
DS, you have no idea if AS would of won the game, the only thing you can count on is he would of been sacked 8 times and also tackle in the end zone, if the refs got that play right, we would of won the game, that was a bad call.
“And at the end of the day, would AS have won? Yep”
Could you back that up with some facts, please. The way the O-line performed today, neither QB was set-up to succeed. They were getting blown off the ball on almost every play.
Would AS have won the game all by himself or did you forget this was a TEAM sport?
Neal
This was the type of game where AS wins in some boring grueling match like 13-3, or 20-3 or something, and you and your little band come on here and say that CK would have scored 50 and AS is wasting this great defense and is loser and can’t win the big one.
AS wins this game. Hands down. Put it to you like this. AS scored just as many TD’s with blurred vision in his last game as CK did today with good vision. Both against the same team by the way. And in both cases, the Rams had the same time to prepare for AS and CK.
Love how you answer my questions, but address your post to Neal.
Kinda pathetic isn’t it?
DS, , your not even a knowledgeable fan, also I trust JH, you don’t.Your a hater. I want to win the game and even gave your man crush props when he was playing well, you just hate CK and JH.
Nobody mentioning Delanie Walker dropping an easy td to win the game or david akers missing another field goal, or the countless penalties. Man I wish Kaep playing in his 3rd game can be afforded even a quarter of the slack that former overall pick alex smith was given in year 8. Smith played horrendous against the giants, pathetic against the vikings, against the jets terrible, against seattle terrible and he’s a veteran. Kaep will be just fine better this team take it’s lumps now than in the playoffs, they will be a better team. Harbaugh is stiking with Kaep, no more alex, he would have been sacked and fumble 3-5 times today at least.
>>Nobody mentioning Delanie Walker dropping an easy td to win the game or david akers missing another field goal.
Welcome to the blog, but nothing but mentioning that from some quarters.
Smith had the lead against the Giants(in the playoffs)..beat the Jets, beat Seattle, and I will sort of give you The Vikings…of course Smith does’nt play defense, and on that day they did’nt stop Ponder
>>Vikings, Giants….
If the defense played those games like they did today and we still lost, Alex would have been tarred and feathered. For good reason.
Yes they did Chris.
Of course if CK managed to get even a FG out of the great starting field position (especially the first half) that drop means nothing at all.
Chris,
Good points, AS has had more excuses and chances then Linsay Lohan has, and he is still on the team , you are right AS has been bad and inconsistent this year, against the Viking, Giants, Jets and Seahawks that is a reason among his other numerous flaws why the coach of the year benched him. Going thru growing pains with Kaep, but the future is still bright after 8 years of vanilla Quarterbacking.
To fix the problem on the offense you have to look beyond the QB whether it is AS/CK. Critics on both sides use the same exact arguments to state there cases for both sides just reversed. So what does that tell ya. Same thing happening to both QBs. To fix the problem you got to recognize the problem. Its not the QBs.
True to some extent.
But the Rams don’t win this game if CK is smarter with the ball. Also called “managing the game”. The insult to AS is the reason why CK lost us the game undercenter.
Had we simply handed the ball off every down, we would have won this game. The Rams didn’t do anything offensively. I said all week that the Saints showed how to stop CK and they suck. A good D will really take advantage of it and they did.
Understood DS but I also understand that young QBs make mistakes. I hate to hang mistakes on a young quaterback. I am not saying he doesnt need to be critiqued just I grant a little bit of latitude to the inexperience. Just hate to see this with the playoffs looming.
That is true undercenter
But JH replaced AS. The only way that should happen is if the new guy is better than the guy you have in there. Especially on a team that is Super Bowl bound if we don’t screw it up (and we seem to be doing that now).
Since JH did that, CK gets no considerations (inexpereince exceptions). By the lowest measure/standard he should be compared to whatever standard AS was. And logically, it should be to a higher standard since he is better, and a better player demands a better standard.
As I’ve repeated thru out undercenter. This lies on JH. His actions here….bad. CK is caught in the middle and AS the guy who literally got the HC of the Year award for JH last year is kicked to the curb.
I believed back in the day that had it not been for JM’s elbow, SY never takes control till Joe retires. You don’t dismiss a winning QB for an unknown. AS is top of the NFL the past 1.5 years. The chances that the new guy is better is like nada.
The football Gods exacted some revenge on us my friend. My spouse kept saying we’d lose this game. I kept screaming at them “NO! CK will find a way to win!” The football Gods don’t care about what I said and they made it clear….
JH, you screwed up royally.
+1
+ 2
That game was tough to watch. Defenses played great for each team.
Not sure what was up with the O-Line or all the low snaps. Kap had a bad game too – made some mistakes, but was also under duress all game. Play calling was questionable. Akers…ugh.
That said, the sky isn’t falling. This loss doesn’t mean all hope is gone and the team is destined to lose. Every team has a bad game here and there….and the Niners have been consistent with their bad games coming after two consecutive wins. If the pattern holds true – they’ll get a W next week against Miami.
I’m not panicking – still have full faith in Harbaugh and am looking forward to playoff football for the second year in a row.
Sigh Finally along with Jack, we got the voice of logic. Good post 9er girl.
TY. The worst part about this loss is that the resident alien is back to her 10000 posts per day regimen.
Hoping CK bounces back next week for more than just football reasons, lol!!!
Is she any worse then Neal or 23j?
Just saying….be careful what you ask for….
It’s so great that so many here spend so much time discussing my gender. Exhilarating really.
Get a life people.
Txttree…IMO, yes. But I’m biased – I’ve never had any gripes with the other two.
You probably have a vienna saugage.
Your gender wasn’t discussed at all. Reading to much into things again?
IMO
They are just as juvenile and obnoxious….
Guess it in the eye of the beholder…
For the record. I dislike most of DS posts, and choose to ignore her.
Yes, yes…..balance has come to the blog.
Good to see you 49er girl.
Doc
The Precious would have shat unicorns out of his arse and shot rainbows out of his eyes.
He still would have lost, because that is his history. But he would have been so pretty while losing. And, you know, white.
Still on the ‘precious’? SMH
Clem, you mean his 20-6 history over the last 2 years? That history?
And why are you playing the race card?
Txtree49er…in case you’re not familiar with the Lord of the Rings, Smeagol was a hateful little inividual similar to 67′s postings.
niner61, I beg to differ. Gollum was that creature. Smeagol was the alter ego that had a spark of decency still buried somewhere underneath.
@txtree as long as you Smithers pine for Alex I will refer to him as the Precious. I have no idea why your ilk is so attached to a mediocre quarterback.
And you lower yourself to name calling….were did I call for smith? All I asked for is that CK get critiqued the same as AS….you are blinded by your hate….so if you have to get your kicks by trying to bait others with your immature ‘precious’ name calling, well so be it.
msclemons,
Between this comment and the one about Staley, it’s clear you have lost it. Don’t get me wrong, your posts typically stink like garbage, but these are downright pathetic.
Since “C” is average, “C-” implies that Kaep’s performance was just a little below average. A QB giving up 10 points is not just a little below average.
He had the game-winner in Walker’s hands. that saves from an “F”.
D-
dr
“C” should mean average in a win. A loss, and the QB doesn’t deserve a C grade. It must be lower.
Oldcoach,
Earlier in this thread you replied to “bay” with this.
“I’m with Kap all the way but you know as well as i do Bay turnovers lose games…….”
I replied to “bay” also suggesting that he sounds like what he likes to call the “Smithers”.
I was agreeing with your post, the the structure of these blogs make it very hard to have a meaningful exchange especially when there is a flood of posts.
Anyway, I expect Kaepernick to learn, and I expect him to learn fast.
Seems Kaepernick went from the hot hand, to the cold toe today.
Also Grant have you manufactured this environment for the purpose of getting blog hits, the whole Alex Smith is the devil and sucks and anyone is better than him even a 98 year old paralyzed woman with Cancer crowd, and then the other half is the Alex smith our holy savior crowd. To me it looks like you have kind of pressured the blog in that direction.
If you have the time, look back at the blog after the Title game.
Grant made his true feelings for Alex Smith known then. And about the Niners draft choice moments after their first pick this year. Grant does it and knows it. I sincerely hope he doesn’t actually believe this muck he puts out sometimes.
Randy= onelame
Bs = whining b****!
Ribico= Kap hater
They all = blind bitter hating idiots.
CK had a C- game. Others want to bring up the fg attempts. Well when our OC calls runs that go nowhere to set it up for Akers how can you blame him.
His pitch was bad, but Ginn and his lazy a$$ should have fell on the ball. And the play shouldn’t have been called.
The “saftey” wasn’t one. But the haters have their hearing aids turned down and are stretching for something. He ran that way because he knows he can elude defenders and throw it away. Like he did. And he did his job. The refs Didnt.
And finally if any of you think Smith would have faired any better are smoking crack. The pressure was there all day. One thing Smith has NEVER been good at handling. The 3rd downs that ck hit Smith never hits. Because of arm strength. You Smithers come on here and try to compare the two like Smith has win every game he’s played. Nope Smith would have folded like a bad hand. Like the Giants game and Minn game and the first Rams game.
Enjoy your day Harbaugh haters. But it’s like I said earlier in the year in quotations. “If smith doesn’t get better than last season, he will not be here the next season and the smith fans will TURN on Harbaugh” and look at you all now. Glad you’re all not my coach. Enjoy your day and this loss. Bs, ribico, Hoff, all of onelames names, Claude, Montana, …. And so on. Just remember CK is still the starter because he gives this team a better chance at winning and that was shown today. Smith would have gotten punked like he always did with pressure in his face.
Can you not admit that ck had a bad game?
Lmao!!! At all of you Smithers. Talking with the crow in your mouths. Way to congratulate a loss. True 49er fans.
First… You don’t go to the coach and voice your concerns about who should start when you can’t put together a string of games where you’re not getting punked. Staley is overrated. I’ve said that for the past two years now. And to have a smile on your fat face when the other team scored a td is pathetic. I don’t care who the player is. I’ve never seen FG, PW or not even Alex Smith with a smile on their faces when a play goes bad. If you all think that’s ok then you have NO drive in your pathetic lives.
Second…. You’re all talking about a backup qb. When he is in the game. THEN he’ll be worthy of talking about. Get over it dummies. Harbaugh is the coach, you all loved him when he was pounding Smiths shoulder pads and now he’s pounding CK’s. I know its a bitter pill to swallow, but its just the plain truth that Harbaugh “qb guru/coach of the year” knows more than you bitter butt hurt success hating clowns.
And last….. Looking at this list. You’re all the same Smithers that weren’t here two weeks ago, except ribico pretending to be humble and on board. Ride it all week Smithers. Enjoy because you’re not going to like ck outplaying what you all thought was the best qb on the roster. Wheeeeew! Me Bitter? Yep my team lost today.
In other words, take the high road unless you’re are talking about the other QB that is going to come in today and “mop up” for CK! SMH
Were did I talk about smith? I just asked about ck and that he gets critiqued the same as Alex….
Did I say bench CK? No…
You seem to have gone off the deep end with a bunch of others….bay and msc come to mind….
joe staley conspiracy theories, catch a new episode tonight. why was joe smiling? it must be because the oline hates CK
What conspiracy theory? Staley had a giant s*** eating grin on his face after the bad pitch.
That’s not a theory, it’s fact.
Film doesn’t lie. Staley would rather lose a game than play without his boyfriend.
Are you really going to go that low???
Clem’s officially lost it.
Yeah that’s idiotic, Joe Staley is a pro bowl Tackle. He is not going to play like garbage so Kaepernick gets shelved. If he did that his job would be in doubt as well. By your logic him letting Alex get hit and knocked out of the game the last Rams game was because he hated Alex Smith. Also why has Joe Staley not been letting Kaepernick get sacked every game since the rams game. The real truth is, this the rams are just a better football team right now than the 49ers, we had 2 tries, and each one they took us out behind the woodshed and let us have it. You are full of crap there is no conspiracy Joe Staley is the absolute professional, do not make excuses for a better team dominating us.
>>Staley would rather lose a game than play without his boyfriend.
wow. when fans become this unhinged it’s not a pretty sight (or site).
it’s funny because people believe this sh*t. kinda like the 9/11 conspiracy theories
MSC,
A sh-t eating grin, or maybe a grimmace. You have absolutely no idea what Staley was thinking on that play. None whatsoever.
MD, you’re really, really upset that Kaep didn’t have a very good game, probably because you’re too personally invested in him, (and on the other side of the coin, you’re too invested in Alex not succeeding).
And with regard to Alex and pressure; Teams don’t generally blitz too much against Smith cuz he beats the blitz with regularity.
So…..take a chill pill, hope Kaep turns it around next week, or get ready to swallow your pride and cheer on Alex as he salvages the season. It’ll be one or the other.
you can tell by the angry tone on the posts, people are scared
you truly are stupid…no,I take that back..stupid would be good for you..hahahahahah
Well done, md. That was an excuse tour de force.
Its simple the 49ers QB play for the most part is reliant on the strength of the run game yeah we ran 23 times today but it wasnt prolific or respectable BJ is not a good fill in for Kendal Hunter. Jeff Fisher is a good coach he planned perfectly for the Caep attack and got a nice meal of Kaep flank steak today. For you doubters, this is how good the 49ers are, when we play a great defense and its an even fight we get slaughtered. The Bears do not count because we caught them with there pants down, but all the great defenses this year have given us a huge tough time this year. This isnt a QB issue it is a system problem, the Harbaugh offense relies on specific defense play.
The rams like the giants have our number now.
BS,
We will NEVER know if Alex Smith would or would not have won this game. What we do know is that the San Francisco 49ers lost today. Just like we won last week and the week before.
What you fail to realize, ( thought it hurts your heart) is that Alex Smith is not our starting QB anymore. He will not be our starting quarterback in the future. It took JH a half season, but he finally realizes that he can’t win the Super Bowl with Alex Smith. Not as long as this TEAM continues to be as inconsistent as they are. These guys can’t seem to get it together this year. So he’s going to try and cover some of that inconsistency with RoboKap.
It’s crazy that when our team falls flat, it almosts self destruct in every facet. I will say that I’m proud of our defense. They stayed true today and balled. Our offense with the bad O line play, the fumbles, the drops, the inexperience at QB, the PENALTIES on the O line, the missed FG by Akers. Thats a lot of blame. Kap has to take a lot of the blame too. You simply can’t give points to the other team on offense. Kap has to wear that D grade from me today. The kid played with a lot of heart. He played hard and he made plays. But turnovers lose football games.
He lost the game today. Don’t sugar coat it with effort. He gets a pay check for that.
He made mistakes and got rattled against a poor team. What happens when he goes to SEA, NE or in the playoffs against NY or ATL? You think teams wont know how to game plan for him like the Bears? Or how the Rams picked up on what the Saints did against him?
The burden and SB expectation are starting to show in his play. Harbaugh cannot coach him through that. He looked like he was going to cry in his presser. I feel bad for him. This might affect his development. JH has put him in a bad situation.
How pathetic is 23??
Writing to somebody who doesn’t exist? Quite the essay there. I betcha Santa never read your list either. Cut back and edit some will ya?
Prime,
You are hilarious. All of a sudden, JH doesn’t know talent, doesn’t know how to coach, doesn’t know how to deal with his players, doesnt know the pulse of the locker room. All because he benched your boy? You might want to look for a new team because Smith is not coming back. RoboKap will shine like new money next week. Stay tuned son.
Should never lose your job to injury. It’s one if those old school NFL things. Never gonna say this again, but it might haunt the Niners.
Prime
The football Gods have spoken. Is JH listening? We are better than the Rams in 21/22 starting positions.
And please nobody cry about Akers. That Rams punter shanked 3 or punts. If CK is a decent QB, we put those in the endzone. Game over.
DS=BS duh !!
23…. Most know what would have happened if Smith played today. We’ve seen it for years. Pressure>smith. We wouldn’t have scored today. I mean look at what the giants, Vikings, Seahawks did to him. Today would have been no different. Akers would have been out only scorer. That’s why Harbaugh likes ck.
End of the day CK did not get it done. Looked confused, made bad decisions and didn’t manage the game well.
If some of you think this was a good learning experience, think again. This was more film for future coaches on how to beat an inexperienced QB.
The defense gave him all the help he needed. He gave the Rams 10 points. That was the game.
And sooo………….???????
We will see what he can do nest game. stay tuned!
next
AS gets confused after being in the league for 8 years, its not like CK is replacing JM or SY, they are replacing a bust. CK will get his game going, he plays better after 3 games then AS does after 8 years.
You guys are in denial. The kid looked like a kid today. Costly errors and in the playoffs these moments get magnified. It’s not something you learn to deal with in weeks 13, 14, 15, and 16.
JH made a bad call.
Prime,
The refs gave the Rams their first two points. That wasn’t intentional grounding. Mike Pereira confirmed that the line of scrimmage extends out of bounds, that the pass crossed the line of scrimmage extended out of bounds, and that the flag shouldn’t have been thrown.
Ex, still why is Kaepernick dropping that far back in the end zone? He is not thinkin there. Then the pitch same thing. Not thinking.
This game requiried a game manager. The Rams played the run and forced CK to beat them. He didn’t. He gave them another 6.
ex
AS in that situation does what? Takes the sack before backing int the endzone. That prevents the possibility of a Safety.
AS wins the game right there. 2 fewer points by the Rams and we win. Assuming he still screws up the toss. Which I doubt.
Prime,
It is true, it would’ve been better if CK didn’t drop all the way back into the end zone. That still doesn’t change the fact that it wasn’t intentional grounding.
DS,
You have no idea what Smith would’ve done on that play, for a certainty. You may have an idea, but you don’t know.
That about sums it up. He better play better next week, or the heat will really be on.
Either he turns it around, and “all arrows up”, or he blows it again in the next game or two, Harbaugh turns to Smith to salvage the playoffs, which Smith will do, and it’s “all arrows up”.
Neal…really,I’m serious this time..I think I heard your Mom tell you it was bed time
Randy,
Can I have a Whopper with cheese, onion rings and vanilla shake please. ahahhahahah
Neal..you need new material…but it’s nice to see that you make yourself laugh..but then again, most children do…now Mommy is calling you again
Randy, please place my order before I call the mger.
Now I know you are lying Neal..you can’t possibly be waiting for your order since it’s so past your bedtime…child
This explains the why Neal posts comments of non-sense…..he has an obsession with junk food, and it’s proven that too much junk food slows the growth of
vital brain tissue needed for rational thought. Neal,
tell mom and dad that you shouldn’t eat any more happy meals….they are making you batty.
Wow Neal..55Niner is right…now I kind of feel bad..all the happy meals explains your stupidity…hold on,yeah I’m over it..I don’t feel bad anymore
I love the Penthouse letters style fantasies of the 49ers failing and Alex saving the day.
Get over it Smithers. Alex is past tense.
TO are part of the game. If CK had thrown a INT, or a fumble, well that stuff happens.
But what doesn’t happen is taking a larger than need scramble/drop-back, then getting in the endzone, and then not sliding and staying in-bounds to kill the clock.
That’s all accountable to him.
Those are the facts.
Let’s hope he learns and gets better against the against MIA.
The Pats game is the one we’ll see where the Niners are as a whole.
This has all been horribly managed by JH. It became a controversy by how he talked to the media.
Sorry JH — As Niner fans were are the most fair-weather fans ever.
We chased two winning coaches in Marioucci and Seifert!
I remember that on Sunday November 15th 1981 the hot 49ers and our hot young QB went into Cleveland and lost 15-12. I remember it well as it depressed me as much as today’s loss did. Our young QB who went on to be crowned by NFL.com as the greatest QB to ever play the game completed 24 passes out of 42 attempts for 213 yards, zero td’s and 2 interceptions. The Browns shut us down and made Joe Montana look bad and they were a below .500 team. It came after a number of nice though hard fought victories and before a playoff march that ended in our first super bowl victory. The game was depressing as hell.
My point-one game does not a season maketh for a team or player. Kaep is not Joe but the 49ers and Kaep will bounce back. Kaep is the future of the 49ers and there is nothing anyone can say that will stop that, barring injuries of course.
I am a Niner guy first. Definitely not a Smither, those guys showed their true colors today, but I will always root for the 49ers no matter who the QB is, Kaep, Alex or Tolzien. I think Kaep is our future and will be a much better QB over the long haul. But I will not root against his replacement if and when that day comes.
Beat the Dolphins!
Great story domingo, except that game was played at Candlestick in the rain. Remember that game well. The next home game was 2 weeks later against the Giants. They won the game, and clinched the division. I still have the piece of turf I tore up that day.
Yep you are right, it was at Candlestick. My memory fades. But the point of the story is not where the game was played
Domingo,
nice post brother. Way to keep things in perspective…
Well said, show some patience, jeez
Ooh, current day Niner gets compared to legend. Come on guys. Tear him apart. Isn’t that what happens around here?
Very solid post domingo. The smithers are crying doom and gloom again for Kap but they did that in the offseason too. They disputed the term “handpicked by Harbaugh” about Kap during the offseason and preseason. All offseason they said Peyton Manning was not a good qb anymore, they said the 49ers would trade Kap and keep Alex even though Harbaugh and Balke never even said anything close to that…EVER. They are in denial right now about Kap and can’t come to terms with Alex stay in S.F. now being over after this year. So today they vented their hate for all to read on this blog. It changes nothing, no matter how much kicking and screaming they do they have been wrong about everything so far. Peep the names its the same smithers clan members as always.
Anyways, goodnight everyone. Going to go eat and watch some “Walking Dead” tonight…..and no i’m not talking about the 49er offense. :p
Well said, Domingo!!
So you approve of his comparison to Joe Montana? By a QB thats started all of 3 games ? My my, the bar for outrage certainly is lowered.
I agree. Try this same tactic several weeks back and it’s nuclear war in here.
The hypocrisy is laughable.
Talk about jumping the shark. Jebus.
“My point-one game does not a season maketh for a team or player. Kaep is not Joe but the 49ers and Kaep will bounce back.”
He did not compare Joe to CK. The first two sentences of his second paragraph sum up his point – which is nothing more than a nice analogy of where the team is at right now. He’s just trying to talk people back off the ledge. So…..come back rib, come back…..
JM in 1981 had already became the QB to lead the largest comeback in NFL history in 1980 vs the Saints.
So he had that in his corner. CK does not.
Great post Domingo. Got to put it in perspective.
It’s a cute analogy EXCEPT that Montana was NOT replacing a highly rated QB. Kap is the future but we we’re on the way now to lose a shot at the SB.
We can talk about what Smith would’ve done except “Alex isn’t the QB anymore!” Bwahahahahahahah
And today we lost because of the replacement. Everyone clap in excitement!
Thats just not true. Its a simple solution for a simple mind
23jordan and Neal…separated at birth????
They are worried JH might go back to Alex because the rookie looked like a rookie today. JH and turnovers and turnover for points is a big no no!
Now what? Continue to ride this out? Well you cannot go back to AS in my opinion. That ship has sailed. Now we keep our fingers crossed and hope this expectation does not overwhelm CK.
And nobody can critique the heir apparent…then they are not real Niners fans….SMH
“Alex isn’t the QB anymore!”
Which is too bad. You’ve guys have given us sooo many new ideas to use as excuses for him today. What a waste.
Actually, they’re the same excuses which might be enlightening here.
Maybe it’s a reality that the O-line can play pretty poorly and that we still don’t have the Rice / Taylor receivers of old.
Haters and Smithers agreeing? That’s like cats and dogs lying together. Real old testament stuff. And various other funny lines from Ghost Busters.
I am hearing Manningham is hurt – shoulder.
Not good. Wide receiver attrition? Where have we seen this before?
Well were going to find out about all this depth that we have.
Exactly, under.
For the guys that said Kaep looked like a kid or nervous, you guys are idiots. The guy had emotion. He was fired up. He was going after linemen talking trash.
The clock management, the game situation stuff will come with experience. We all saw AS f up enough to get to where he is. This is our new QB until Harbaugh says it isn’t and he gets his chance. Quit being a bunch of morons and be 49er fans. NEWS FLASH, ALEX IS GONE. THIS IS YOUR NEW QB.
Seems to me earlier this year after the Vikings game none of the Smithers came out and attacked Alex. I heard things like, “the team was flat”, “we got out coached”, “bad game plan”. Never did AS get punked by the Smithers after that game.
Then the NY Giants wiped their ass with us. Smith was pathetic that game. If anyone looked like a kid, or looked rattled it was Smith that game. Smith set the Giants up score after score. Did you guys rip on Smith after that game? No you didn’t. You back this guy with a loyalty that borders on obsession. Did you panic? No. I remember Hofer even saying that teams peak at the end of the season. Not to worry.
GUESS WHat YOU MORONS, CK’s first two games were the highest QBR in the history of Niner QB’s. They game planned him. Now he will adjust. And he’ll continue to adjust and get better and better. Because he has a higher ceiling than Smith and because Jim Harbaugh picked him and replaced Smith with him. You guys are pathetic.
Anyone that thinks a young QB doesn’t go through learning curves, doesn’t understand the game period. Go cheer for another team. For every one of you classless morons that questioned my loyalty to the 49ers, go look in the mirror. Hypocrisy is a funny thing. So is accountability. They are also the mark of a man. But we know some of you are not men. Right Prime and DS….
Bay,
They are doing to you, what you did to them. Nothing more.
Hypocrisy is a funny thing.
Does that make you a comedian?
It makes you an a$$hole. Have an opinion you want to share Claude? Course not…
@ bay:
Have an opinion you want to share Claude?
Yes, you’re a hypocrite.
where was this”HE IS YOUR QB” when Alex was the Qb?oh,sorry…you were ranting garbage again..must have talkeed to your room mate Neal
Are you Kaepernick?
rib
If CK handed off on every play next week, he’d have played better than he did today. Our D played their best game this year and we lost.
>>Seems to me earlier this year after the Vikings game none of the Smithers came out and attacked Alex.
Why should we. That was your gig.
>>Then the NY Giants wiped their ass with us.
Yes, the world champion Giants. Pardon me if I treat the same kind of loss to an also-ran slightly differently.
>>Smith set the Giants up score after score
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a Niner QB, Smith or otherwise directly give the opponent more points than the opponent’s offense scored.
>>And he’ll continue to adjust and get better and better.
You saying it does not make it so. Or do I have to dredge up what was being said about Kaep after his limited showing so far? Pretty comical in light of today’s showing.
>>Jim Harbaugh picked him and replaced Smith with him.
Believe me. That is the *only* reason I’m giving Kaep any kind of slack right now. But if this “experiment” derails our Superbowl chances… All I can say is Harbs better have have some pretty thick skin at his disposal.
>>For every one of you classless morons that questioned my loyalty to the 49ers
You mean us who just report what you’ve posted again and again?
October 15, 2012 at 9:08 pm
They roll Smith out again next year and I’m out.
October 25, 2012 at 12:52 pm
Beginning next year if AS is the starting QB I’m gone. Grant can have his blog filled up by the entire band of Village people that pine for AS. But I promise you I will be gone.
bay, you are such an idiot. chill brother.
Bay,
You can’t let the usual suspects get the best of you. We got what we wanted. We know RoboKap is a better QB. His play has already spoken on several levels. We know what this game would’ve looked like with Smith in there. At this point, it doesn’t even matter because all the crying in the world isn’t going to bring him back.
Our new starting QB is not going to win every game. Win or lose, I’m just happy JH saw in Smith what we’ve seen for years, MEDIOCRITY! I enjoyed the game, even in a loss. Kap will be better and he’s gonna learn from his mistakes. He made 3 big ones today. As long as he learns from them, I’m good with that. The kid has a bright future ahead of him. We KNOW this. Remember, we just got an upgrade at QB.
Alex Smith is GONE. I know it, you know it. The Smithers know it. Arguing with them to convert them is a waste. I wouldn’t give it a second. He will never start another game as a Niner. Kap is the present and the future. They both look bright. NEVER let the Smithers see you sweat. Go Niners!
You need a towel too!
Anybody who thinks that the QB performance in the last 3 weeks is going to get us a SB is beyond repair.
The nines are out of contention as of today. This continuing slide into mediocrity is going to get us kicked out in the first round!!!
Excellent bay. You outdid md in the excuse wall o’ text.
Listen to the press conference. JH says, “I don’t forsee any change. Next week will be the same as this week. I’m proud of Kaep.”
For the dummies with dreams of AS coming back. That means he’s NOT COMING BACK…..
Tick tick, tick tick,,?,????,??,,,
The only tick tick ticking are the days left before Smith is released. Want to bet? Oh wait, you welch on bets…
Dont worry Jimmy, this will all play itself out. MIA is a must win!
that ticking Bay is your brain overheating..now slow down, talk to your room mate Neal, and maybe, just maybe between the two of you something smart will come out of your mouths….doubt it
They are all must wins prime trash, the Vikings game and Giants game were must wins too.
So much so that they cost Smith his job….
Randy,
I don’t know you. But I want to help you get home. Searching google right now for the nearest village missing an idiot…
Such a heavy burden to bare for a rookie QB?
The defense served him a silver platter tonight. He regifted them 6.
Prime,
you should be used to it. Last year the defense got a record number of takeaways.
Smith repaid them with the lowest scoring of any QB. Akers helped mask the QB scoring inefficiency by kicking a record number of field goals.
Same guy that could have and should have won both ram games this year.
If this makes you guys feel better than so be it. I can see the photo glossies on the side of the new stadium. Kaeps picture will be one of them Oh and Smith… he won’t be on the roster. If he is, his picture won’t be up. They don’t put backups on the wall shots.
I don’t hear any eggs a hatching? Lets see how this plays out before you start painting Kap mureals!
Ah, so now whatever Harbaugh says at his pressers is God’s truth. Got it.
C- Exactly what I thought.
At least Alex is working on his sideline wardrobe. No more helmet with chin straps on while holding clip board.
And he didn’t pick up a ball once…..
Must be hard for him watching Harbaugh do the bang the pads ritual with another QB……
too late Bay..they don’t need one they already have you…
sure is hard having a battle of wits with a unarmed person…but thats what happens when you are dealing with a ranting child
Harbaugh might be banging his own head soon.
Can’t lose your to injury. It’s gonna haunt the Niners, you watch!
I don’t think that anybody on this board didn’t pull for AS from the beginning. After watching him for seven years I think we all faced the reality that he will never be more than mediocre. Maybe it’s time for you to realize the coaches have seen this too. You Smithers need to get behind the niners qb(kap) and jump off the smith bandwagon
Tyrant,
the guys that fight for AS are the same ones that went crazy when they tried to replace the lead singer for the village people…. Crazy loyal for the one they “love”.
Where was the “mop up duty” Bay? 4 TDs ahead in the 4th qtr! LOL
man Bay…I was hoping I would be wrong, but I guess it is possible for you to get dumber
Yeah
Jump aboard 2-1. Leaving 19-5 and Title game behind.
You realize if CK was as good as AS bad day in that Title game we’d have won today? Likely not. Just pointing it out though.
>>He did not play particularly well, but was sacked (3) and hit (5) too often and flushed out of the pocket far more than in previous games.
Intresting use of the “but” conjunction there, Grant. Other Niner QBs, sacks and hits are indicative of their poor play. With Kaep, they prevent him him from good play. Different rules for different players, I guess.
Yeah, nothing new here. It’s called “grading on the bias”.
The fall of the Greek gods is attributed to hubris. Harbaugh must move on to the Dolphins game plan with a very humble heart and realize his project is jeopardizing our home field advantage for the playoffs.
The game plan was supposed to change as CK’s skills would put the team in a better position to win. Only one pass over 16 yards? The 50 yard scramble? Those were the positives. The roll out right to throw a cross field pass to a covered Vernon Davis? The toss option to Ginn? Those were evidence on too much belief in CK’s outstanding skills.
Manage the game, move the chains on the ground and eat the clock. Humble heart Harbaugh, Humble heart.

That game plan for Chicago was based on AS being the QB. The past 2 weeks…with CK as the QB.
How do you like the results between the 2 so far?
Alex is the past CloseMinded. Deal with it.
Wow, you’ve changed msc! At first you would come out with some clever jokes. They showed a quick mind.
Nowadays you are stuck on mocking folks who are open to ideas that you don’t agree with. And, to boot, you call me out to being closed minded. Hypocrisy much?
You don’t agree on my take on Harbaugh, hubris and humility. Fine. No need to name call. Harbaugh knows more about football than I ever will. No question. My comment is on team building, pride versus objective, mixed messages (hot hand, skill set, etc).
You don’t agree, fine. But don’t call me closed minded. That only makes you a forty something year old third grader. You are much more clever than that.
Interesting how the failures of David Akers continues to go widely unmentioned amidst all of the Kaepernick/Smith debate.
The guy was very good last year, but they need to look hard at replacing him.
Interesting that you are ignoring all the mention of Akers failure.
Very little compared to the quarterbacks.
Well, duh. Now tell us why you think that might be, Jack.
Maybe start with Grant, and the topic of his columns the last 3 to 4 weeks?
Because there are a bunch of fools in here who don’t know much about football?
Show us all the Akers failure articles written by journalists in the Bay Area papers, ESPN, NFL.com, every other pro football blog. Lets see how that number stacks up against the QB oriented ones about a coach on a SB contender benching his #3 rated QB for a unproven 2nd year guy.
You’re free to correct this gross injustice on your own blog, Jack!
The only ones I have seen who are smart enough to have brought it up are Sando and Branch.
Petition Grant to bring up a “kicker controversy”. See where that takes you.
Rib,
That post game presser was pathetic. The only mention was a “is David Akers hurt” question. How about some ask, “When you have a kicker who is struggling, why do you continue to take your foot off the gas and settle for long field goal attempts.”
@ Jack,
they already are looking for that replacement. And yes I have noticed that the Smithers want no part of the struggling kicker conversation.
I believe Akers is’nt mentioned as much because most people in love with Kap thought we would never have to kick a field goal again
Nope. The prediction was blowout after blowout.
We wouldn’t have had to talk about any of this if walker had caught that perfectly thrown pass
Or if CK hadn’t aimed that pitchout over Ginn’s head.
“We wouldn’t have had to talk about any of this if walker had caught that perfectly thrown pass, or if CK hadn’t aimed that pitchout over Ginn’s head.”
There. Fixed it for you guys, but it still doesn’t help the fact that Akers field goal % is near the bottom of the league.
CK had a tough game of it. But in reality the defense held us up and even gave CK an opportunity to score. Walker’s dropped TD pass was a killer. As was the missed field goal.
Overall the OL played bad, CK was below average (safety, pitch), the coaches were out coached and we never really pushed the ball down field. BUT, again the dropped TD and missed field goal were the glaring mistakes that caused the victory.
Not defending Akers, he needs to go. Kickers are head cases and he’s lost it
People said if AS played better last year against the Giants then KW’s fumbles wouldn’t have cost the niners that game so by that logic if CK didn’t give the Rams points the games wouldn’t have come down to a drop by Walker or another miss by Akers.
Shhhh. Don’t state the obvious.. …it will only wake up the trolls
One loss and the blog explodes with a bunch of kids acting like the world is going to end. Some things never change. RELAX, it’s ONE game. We obviously don’t like the outcome, but I promise everything will be ok, you can put the knife down.
Kaep lacks experience, so you really can’t be surprised by his performance today. I just hope he doesn’t make costly mistakes when it matters most (playoffs). That’s what worried me most about Harbaugh making the switch when he did, but I trust JH so I’m not going to worry just yet.
Unlike the anti-Smith douches, I refuse to pick apart the QB’s play and put all the blame on him. The loss isn’t just on Kaep. The line couldn’t block, Stonehands Walker still can’t catch, Akers is broken, and Roman called a terrible game. Walker and Akers really need to go sooner rather than later. I am sick of a receiver who can’t receive and a kicker who can’t kick. Yes I realize Walker does a lot for us, but a TE who drops more balls than he catches should not be playing on this team.
Some of the comments I’m reading on here are so typical of this crowd. Hypocrite Bay making up stats (like always) while trying his hardest to make excuses for CK and continuing to feel threatened by our backup quarterback. Jordan spouting off about who knows what, I really don’t read his comments so I’m not sure what garbage is coming out of his mouth, but anyone who has been around here long enough can take a guess. Neal and msclemons with their typical anti-Smith baloney, I swear they have an obsession with him because they never shut the hell up about the guy, even when he’s not playing! Seriously, do you two add ANYTHING to this blog? Every comment I read from you guys is about Alex Smith! You don’t like him nor his supporters, we get it. Give it a rest or stay off the blog.
Everyone needs to chill out. Like Jack said, the sun will still rise in the morning. It’s one game. We’re still a great team and let’s look forward to next week.
LSX
CK gets to play Seattle in Seattle. If he thought the Saints in NO was tough and the Rams in St. Louis was hard, he’ll find out what Brees,Brady, Flacco, Rodgers found out.
Seattle in Seattle is the toughest team to play bar none. This kind of effort up there and CK will need to consider retiring. This ain’t Nevada. We can’t afford any growing pains.
So let me get this straight…if CK has a bad game in Seattle part way through his second year in the NFL in the first season in which he has started games, then he should consider RETIREMENT?? No room for growing pains?? ROFLMAO!!
Funny – if that was how things worked in the NFL, then AS would have never made it past his rookie season, let alone his second, third, fourth, or fifth season……yet you pledge your unwavering allegience to him with almost every post.
Crab was right – you can be entertaining.
49erGirl,
What people like BS and the Smithers don’t realize is that is why JH made the change. He knows that Kap will be a better QB come playoff time. He didn’t expect to lose to the Rams. He won’t lose to the Dolphins and if he beats Arizona, we will win the division. Wwe need to hold the 2 seed. The bears lost today, that helped. We are working out Kap for the playoffs. He will have seen everything by then.
I know CK will have growing pains, but it also shows hes’s not ready for the playoffs. It’s crazy to think Alex would have been ready either, but he beat a very a good Saints team last year.
Especially now that the run game is going to wear down. The Niners need 3 good backs back there, and now they have a very tired and banged up Gore,
I like CK and want him for next year but this is quickly going to be a fiasco. Doesn’t matter if CK has a good game against MIA. It’s going to be up and down until the playoffs. There’s just no flow to the offense, something we used to knock AS on.
bayareafanatic says:
November 19, 2012 at 1:09 pm
“Regardless whether CK lights it up, or wets the bed, the starting job is AS’s.
I think if CK performs average to above average it will give the coaching staff confidence and will play into the competition in training camp 2013.
I also think that if CK is terrible, it might lead the organization to draft a QB next year as an insurance policy in case CK doesn’t develop.”
Bay, it seems you had it right here (see your first line). I quote, “the starting job is AS’s”! Now you make excuses for CK’s poor play today? SMH
Looks like my predictions are spot on as usual, the 49ers will not win a super bowl this year no matter who the QB is. Our offense does not play well against teams with stellar defenses unless they get caught with their pants down. Last year we did though, we played well against several high powered defenses that knew exactly what was coming and we won against them. This year the only teams with a great defense we have beat were the bears and the Seahawks, every other team with a semblance of defense has thouroughly smacked us around like school children. Good defensive coaches have figured out Romans offensives tricks, it will take us an offseason to adjust and plan some new wrinkles this year the niners will make the playoffs but we will not win a super bowl. I have said this multiple times already, I love this team but we just aren’t ready this year, last year we snuck up on everyone, we aren’t sneaking up on anyone anymore.
Wow, you’re really going out on a limb, there. The odds are always going to be in your favor every time you predict any one team won’t win the super bowl in a given year. Not really much to crow about.
Besides that, the super bowl is played in February. So, you can hardly say the 49ers don’t have a chance.
For me I win both ways, I honestly think we wont make it past one game in the playoffs the way things are going, but if we do and if we do win the Super bowl I will be completely stoked for our team, if I am right I can say I told you so which is always nice. If I’m wrong I will admit it graciously and accept the criticism that comes with it.
You win both ways? How so?
Who cares about right or wrong. if the 49ers lose, we all lose. There’s no win in that.
For some people being right is important, being a jerk and rubbing things in peoples face is nice, I’m wrong alot but once in awhile I can gloat and be a jerk. This will be one of those situations.
Funny, the Rams dared Alex Smith to throw deep. They gameplanned for that.
Today, they dared Kap to checkdown, they took away the intermediate to deep stuff. Funny.
Jeff Fisher!
When people were talking blowouts and AS coming in for “mop up duty” in the 4th qtr, I mentioned that JFisher would be ready. He had a similar player to CK in VYoung.
BTW, the Rams OC (BSchottenheimer) stunk today as well.
Hofer,
The pain wont go away huh. You’re full of the backhanded compliments. So Young is like Kap?? Not hardly. He’s not coming back Hofer. You know who I’m taking about.
Why is it funny? Jeffrey Fisher is no joke. He out coached Jimmy and Roman with inferior talent.
Make no mistake, Carroll and Belichick will employ the same strategy and both of those games will also be on the road.
You’re all over Kap’s nuts like he’s the greatest QB ever, aren’t you?
If you’re referring to Jordan, you’re correct. Which is pretty ironic considering this past summer he said “Kap is not the answer” while stating so matter-of-factly that Josh Johnson would be starting by week 6.
If Kaep struggles badly at some point, you’ll see the hate come out.
LSX
Do you think he’ll be wanting the backup to come in….AS?
Can we please all take a breath, and stop this nonsense?
None of us have any idea what would’ve happened if Smith played today. We don’t know if he would’ve been sacked 8 or 10 times, nor if he would’ve led the team to a win.
What we do know is the 49ers lost.
We also know that CK didn’t play his best football today.
Having said that, I thought CK played well enough for the 49ers to win.
The intentional grounding penalty was bogus.
Roman put CK in a bad spot by calling that pitch out deep in 49er territory.
Ginn needed to dive after the ball, an punch it out of bounds. He went alligator arms, instead.
DW dropped a perfectly thrown pass that would’ve been the game winning TD.
Akers missed a game winning FG in OT.
Sorry if anyone wants to label the above list excuses. They’re not. They’re facts. Just as the conditions that affected Smith’s career are facts, also.
And, no, I’m not saying CK isn’t responsible for his play. He is. He shouldn’t have taken such a deep drop that he was in the endzone on the BS intentional grounding play, and he shouldn’t have pitched the ball over Ginn’s head. But let’s keep things in perspective, CK made a plays that helped cost the 49ers the game, but he didn’t lose the game all by himself. On top of that, he made plays that very easily could’ve won the game, too.
So, CK didn’t play a perfect game. So what? It’s his third start. How about some patience?
exgolfer,
On point, like always. Well said, I agree 100%
LSX,
Thanks.
I missed your similar comments above until after my post.
Well said, ex, well said.
Thnx, 49erG.
Ex, Hof, has CK gotten better or worse in 3.5 games?
Prime,
I typically take the long view on things. I don’t think you can judge is a player is getting better or worse over the span of three games.
Besides that, CK, or any other player, doesn’t play in a vacuum. There are so many variables that affect a players performance. A player can appear to worse when in reality the other team played out of its mind or got lucky and had the right calls more than their share of the time [that was the comment made by Joe Staley, I think]. You’ve got to remember, the Rams get paid, too.
Ask me at the end of the season if I think CK is getting better or worse. His career trajectory should be more clear by then.
The Rams were a losing team who couldn’t punt the ball worth a damn and we did nothing to make them pay. Had we, that Safety you are obsessed a not being a safety has no impact to the blowout this game should have been if CK is in fact better than AS.
The change we are told was because of the hot hand. That hand coughed up a loss. I know I know, short term pain for long term gain. Thats BS!
The hot hand turned into the cold toe today.
Prime
Who is to say we will be good in the long term? We are good now. The Jets once thought they were good in the long term just 2 years ago. Now that whole franchise is in turmoil. Don’t assume it can’t happen here. We need to put out the Pro-Bowl QB from last year who is better this year.
But we can’t because JH screwed this up. He needs to rectify the situation ASAP.
DS,
There is no comparison between the Jets and 49ers. The 49ers have a great head coach, the Jets don’t. The 49ers have a great GM, the Jets don’t. The Jets have no QB, the 49ers have two.
The list could be much longer, but you get the idea.
ex
You seem to be missing the point.
A few years ago, everybody though Ryan was an excellent coach. How he lashed out at the media. How he played the game. The Jets were in 2 straigh AFC Title games. You mean to tell me that was pure luck?
And if the Niners have 2 QB’s, none of them showed up Sunday and played the game. 7 points after the first half. We should have been up by 21 at the very least. Complete domination in every phase, and to be up by only 1 play (7 points)….that is where we lost this game.
DS,
Who’s “everyone” that thought Rex Ryan was a great coach? A lot of people seemed to think he was a bit of a buffoon [me inlcuded], entertaining and a decent defensive coach, but far from great.
It’s pretty clear to most everyone who knows football that Harbaugh is one of the best coaches in the NFL. He is likely to hold that status for the forseeable future.
EX
I thought this day would never come. I agree with everything you said. Good post. Not bad for an ex- 24 handicapper! lol
23, has Kap gotten better or worse with each game?
Jordan23,
Thanks a lot. I’m so troubled by you agreeing with me, I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep.
BTW, Jordan, it’s “exgolfer”, not “exhack”. If I had ever had anything close to a 24 index, I would’ve taken up tennis a long time ago.
JH re placed playe of the week, 19-5, “clutch”, “expert of the offense” with this?
Screw patience. And I know AS wins this game. Even when he stunk he would have beaten a team that our D shutout. Who ever heard of a D losing a game where all points in regulation by the opponent were via the opponents own defense? We wee AZ bad at the QB position today.
That is not excusable. And it is due to JH. I could see a bad game coming. But come on. 7 points when the first half was played on the Rams end? Truly pathetic.
In JH you trust??? Quit crying! He’s gone! Look at my screen name. You and your girlfriend prima. Look at my screen name.
“And I know AS wins this game.”
How is that possible? Did you hop in the Delorean to go back and fix JH’s “mistake”?
DS,
Exactly how do you know AS would’ve won today’s game? You may think Smith would’ve won the game, but there’s simply no way to know an outcome of something that didn’t happen.
ex
How do you know CK is any good? The future of this team?
I know because AS in his career of sucking never sucked like this. Wgat game did AS QB where the D pitched a shut out and we lost? AS has played in a lot of games. So the stats back this idea up. Plus the fact he is the 5th best QB by rating, top 2 or 3 by W/L record and oh yeah. Has beaten the Rams even when he and the team sucked.
That enough evidence for you? Because I have a lot more.
As Jim Mora used to say “You think you know, but you really don’t know.”
Hmmm…someone used to quote that all the time – who could that have been? Oh yeah, same person who, up until a couple weeks ago, used to constantly post “In Harbaugh I Trust” and would mock anyone questioning JH’s decisions with comments like “Are you saying you know more about football than Harbaugh??”
Who was that again?
DS,
Come on, you have to admit CK is at least somewhat good, don’t you?
I’ve never said I know CK is definitively going to be great. I have said he has tremendous upside, is already impressive and is backed by JH. That’s enough for me.
You should know that I like Smith. He’s very good, but if JH says it’s CK’s time, then I’m on board. Besides that, I like what I see from CK. He looks like he has “it”, IMO.
Again, I’m not saying I’m right, it’s just my opinion.
Keep in mind, when you deal in absolutes, you can end up in a corner.
ex
The one dealing with absolutes is JH. This is his corner he’s backing into.
And CK didn’t impress me with spot duty this year. Nor inPre-season. And he was Super lucky getting that tie in the first game. He played great against a great Bears team that stank. He got 14 free points from the D in NO in a game we win by 11. Then manages to score 20 today. 10 for us and 10 for the Rams. If not for our dominant D, we get whipped.
If that qualifies as good to you, I can’t argue the point further. But CK has managed fewer points with each consecutive start. At some point that trend will end. But that won’t make CK a good QB. The past 2 weeks the D dominated. And we only won 1 because the D scored. Which was the only thing they didn’t do today, and what happened?
Not good and getting worse while defenses learn more about him is my eval. It might just be 3 games, but if CK starts a 4th and this pattern continues we will have thrown 2 games away. We got lucky. Lady Luck is collecting her debts now and we owe her 1 more to get back to even. She’ll come. Hope it isn’t in the playoffs.
DS
Would Alex Smith have made the mistakes that Kaep made with the safety and the bad pitch to Ginn? Probably not.
Does that mean AS would have won the game? We have zero idea if that would have happened. No one can say “I KNOW so-and-so would have won this game”…because we don”t…
Matt
I know that AS would have won the same way I know the sun would/will/has risen the next day. I know it because my spouse who doesn’t care flat out said it. I know it because I every ounce of my being tells me.
This game was in the bag. Hand delivered. And CK due to JH lost it. We dominated that first half. The Rams couldn’t get a punt off without shanking it. They couldn’t get a first down. They barely managed to cross midfield and that was in the dying seconds.
If you come out of that with only 7 points…that is sorry play. Keep in mind AS won all sorts of games the past year and half, then you aren’t very good at all. We were better than the Rams were in 21/22 starting positions. Which position other than QB did the Rams have us beat? Their DE vs. our DE? Our WR’s vs their WR’s? We may not have been “Bears game” good at them, but the Rams weren’t either. And in some cases, they were worse.
Except Bradford was better than CK. CK made mistakes that will lose you games. Bradford made mistakes that lose you drives. Compare the two, and Bradford made the less damaging ones. And in a close game that should never have been, that is the difference.
“How about some patience?” Eff that.
What do you think it’s going to be like in Foxboro and Seattle? Patticakes?
There are only four more games until the playoffs. Everything is about the playoffs and seeding. This isn’t training camp; these are real bullets.
+ A number larger than our National Debt.
Yes, yes, I’m sure you’re right. It would be much better if the 49ers just panicked. What was I thinking.
The Niners panicked when we lost to the Eagles in our last Super Bowl season.
Panic is there because it has an evolutionary advantage if used properly. Losing to an inferior team with the”future” is a good time to panic. If you don’t, we won’t make it to the Super Bowl or even playoffs. Look at our schedule. Every team has either an elite QB or a good D. And all are better than the Rams. If you don’t start to worry now, it’s a little late when the lion has you by the neck. And teams are stalking our “future” and liking what they can do.
Panicking now is a good time.
DS,
I wouldn’t call it panicking, I would call it being motivated by a setback.
Well said Barnone. December is time to be firing on all cylinders. 18 of 19 style.
Now Harbaugh has made a major decision riding an unknown into the playoffs. In JH we trusted to not make a boneheaded decision. Too soon for Kap, too late in the season for the 49ers.
Prime,
You could well be right that JH made a mistake. Nobody, including JH, is infallable. But I will take my chances with JH every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Have you forgotten how bad things were when he got here? I will gladly take an occassional misstep along with all of JH’s positive moves.
BTW, it’s far from certain that moving CK into the starting lineup is a misstep. How do I know that? Because it’s JH’s decision. It may end up being wrong, but the chances of it being right are much, much greater.
Prediction: Kendall Hunter’s loss is just like Morgan’s last year – a much bigger deal than people realized when it happened.
This is the exact time of year last season with Gore started getting banged up and slowing down. And now without a solid change-of-pace back?
The 49ers entire offense is based on an established run and play-action pass. No running game? Well, that equates to today’s result.
Exactly Gore looked tired today, and all he had to fall back on was Sloppy BJ, who was apallingly bad. It wasn’t that there was no run game its just the rams shut it down completely I havent seen a game in a long time where Gore got stopped behind the line as much as he did today.
Yep we need Hunter’s ability to get outside. LaMichael James needs to be activated over Jacobs, we could use his explosiveness in the run game.
Agreed, LaMichael James NEEDS to see the field. I don’t understand why he still isn’t suiting up.
Harbaugh knows what LaMichael can do; he remembers what LaM did to his last two Stanford teams. I THOUGHT that was why he drafted him. Perhaps the scout team is punishment for that….
Little comparison:
Alex Smith’s last 9 1/2 quarters vs the Rams:
44/61 559 yds 4 tds 0 turnovers, 14 yds rushing, 1 rushing td, 8 sacks, team put up 67 points
Colin Kaepernick’s last 8 1/2 quarters vs the Rams:
32/ 49 325 yds, 150 yds rushing 1 td, 6 sacks +1 safety by penalty, team put up 30 points.
Obviously the Rams team was much different last year, but interesting nonetheless.
Thanks.
Isn’t comparing the 2011 Rams to the 2012 Rams somewhat similar to comparing the 2010 Niners with the 2011 Niners?
Sam Bradford didn’t play in either game last year and their HC / coaching staff sucked. Jeff Fisher is a hell of a HC and the 2012 Rams are getting better every week – especially defensively.
Not exactly a fair comparison there.
Sorry tk – you hadn’t posted your reply before I typed that up.
Yeah you’re right that the difference between 2011 to 2012 Rams is probably too much to gain too much insight but thats the closest we have to make a comparison between the guys other than the both of them versus the Saints but everyone likes to call Alex’s play in the Saints game a fluke. Anyway it will be interesting to see how Kaepernick plays next week against the Dolphins as teams have more film on him now. Hopefully Fisher didn’t provide a blueprint and this was just our every third game hiccup thats been affecting us this year.
The Rams D though wwas decent. The offense was so bad though that the D was overwhelmed. Look back at it. The Rams staydd in games more than not. Just horrible offensive play ruined them.
So the stats of AS agaist the Rams isn’t out of place as much as the Rams final record might indicate. AS had to play well to beat them in the finale to secure the bye week. And AS came thru.
Smith > Kap
This is like Jim Harbaugh’s midlife crisis. He had to drop the ol’ routine and go out and sport him a sleek new model. I will try to avoid any further psychobabble, but it really approaches that level of dunderheadedness.
QBs are routinely judged by: Wins. Recall Walsh’s complaint about DeBerg. The very studliness of the player often gets in the way of common sense when the chips are down. We shall see in the next week where that all will play out. Is CK “just good enough to get you beat?”
One further aside: We cannot compare the QB play, but we can note that the QB has input into the play at the LoS. It would be instructive for a beat-type writer to go over the game tape and note what was K’s choices while all this 1 yard running occurred.
My first time on this blog and it is really interesting. There is no doubt that Kaepernick made a couple of bad plays today but he also threw the ball well for the most part and after he gave the rams 6 points (he didn’t give them the 2 pt conversion BTW), he bounced back with a 50 yard run and a perfect pass to Delanie Walker that should have given us a 7 point lead rather than having to settle for a 3 point lead. The offensive line should be getting a F before Kap. How many holding penalties were there that put us in a whole and we could not run to the outside or screen there without KH as FG continues to drop easy passes. I have been a season ticket holder since 1975 and the Alex Smith fans in this blog resemble the Steve Deberg fans who didn’t want to see Joe Montana replace him. Colin Kaepernick is going to suffer some growing pains but he will be third best quarterback the 49ers have had in the last 40 years or so. I can’t believe all these stupid F grades. The guy bounced back from his stupid pitch with a 50 yard run and then what should have a winning touchdown pass that was dropped. Everyone is giving our defense a pass but the let the Rams drive down for the tying field goal (and yes CK should not have run out of bounds on 3rd down). Moreover, we would have won both games against the Rams if we had a reliable and clutch field goal kicker. I believe the one Akers missed at the Stick was around 42 yards and the one today was 51 but in a dome which is about the same thing. I can’t believe all the vitrolic comments about CK. He played great against Chicago and pretty well last week. Today was a step backwards but he still put us in a position to win with very poor offensive line play and no running game to speak of. I am sure that I am going to be derided for my observations but we should be rooting for whomever the quarterback is if we truly are 49er fan.
It’s all JH’s fault. What hs he really won. My feelings on winning a superbowl just got dashed big time.
He allowed Freddy P. Soft to sneak into his brain, by playing a rookie who has the potential in the future to be the starting QB to start on a team ready for a SB run.
Looking at him at the press conference you could see he knows some players will question him.
The fact is CK has regressed has he has played, RG3 or Luck haven’t.
its easier in the NFL to game plan against a running QB. I gave CK the benefit of the doubt but after 3 games I am not buying this nonsense.
I am yet to see an upgrade from Alex, the only thing different is him running to the sidelines and those were all terrible plays today except maybe 2.
I freaking can’t believe we lost to the sorry rams and their offense did not score 1 point.
Why did we change QB’s again?
Did Freddy P. Soft final get us into his trap.
The 49ers were ahead by eight with 3:11 remaining and were facing 3rd and 3 at their own 17-yard line.
and you run the option pitch which had never been ran with Ginn this year.
Dumb- Dumb – Dumb
What is Brandon Jacobs doing on the sideline?
Someone needs to tell this idiot coach that your QB is a rookie, you can’t force him to be a veteran overnight.
JH made his bed now he must lay in it.
Actually (with apologies to our homophobic friends), JH made his bed, and now we ALL get to lie in it.
Jeff Fisher takes a shot at JH
“I don’t know what they were trying to accomplish there,” he said. “But we took advantage of one of their mistakes.”
Here’s Fisher: “… They helped also because he ran out of bounds once and they threw an incomplete pass and so I was not expecting … I was expecting to get the ball back inside of a minute with no timeouts left. Instead, we have it with 1:48 and a timeout left, so that certainly helped our cause.”
It was too risky of a play to call at the time,” Harbaugh conceded. “When we called it, we really though it was a safe play. But then we got the edge pressure and Colin pulled and was forced to pitch right away. It threw the rhythm and timing off.”
And there you go you loof, with a running QB all you need is to keep pressure on the edges so he can be forced to make a decision.
A pocket passer will either pass the ball or take a sack.
Seems like we are getting more penalties and most of the injuries on offense come when Kaepernick plays. Last year it was Morgan. This year its Hunter, Manningham, and Williams. Coincidence? Bad mojo/karma?
Can you imagine unless we win 3 out of the next 4, we may not even make to the playoffs.
This is freaking unbeliveable
To the Yorks:
I am a big Niners fan and a supporter of Harbaugh until seeing his stupid mistake of destroying his ethical and creditability in benching an injured player. He let his ego get the best of him. His stubborn decision to change QB in the middle of Niners season when the team is united and looking forward to Superbowl destination. While the Patriots are on fire and focus, the Falcons and Texans are on the roll, Harbaugh has stirred unnecessary distraction and controversy in his team.
The bottom line is he would have many opportunities to put in Kaepernick later if Alex screws up some games. His stupid, unthoughful decision really hurt his team physically (more players getting injured due to QB is unable to finish games) and mentally. He destroyed Alex Smith’s confident and severed his trust, and possibly damaged Niners chance to go to the Superbowl this year.
We can become the third seed at 11-4-1. The rams at fifth seed at 9-6-1 and Seattle with the sixth seed at 9-7.
For this to happen, the Rams would beat Buffalo, Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Seattle.
The 49ers would win all their remaining games except for one at New England.
The Seahawks would beat Arizona and Buffalo before losing to the 49ers and Rams.
Hopefully Harbaugh has pitc fork and angry mob insurance for his home. I guess the honeymoon is over for some. Is it just me or are the Niners not even 2 years into their rebuild/retool after 8 years of being horrible? Perspective. The team still has the division and 2 seed plus they hold their own destiny if they win their games.
The Rams are paid to win games too so it’s not like this was something out of a twilight zone show. Any given Sunday. In Harbaugh I still trust. Regroup and prepare for the Dolphins.
My pitchfork is buried in the snow anyway.

sure is hard having a battle of wits with a unarmed person…but thats what happens when you are dealing with a ranting child
How mature of you….. Onelame….. From someone who has been booted and still comes to the kitchen for a handout…… You’re …… OCD….. Gives you away dummy. And the fact that you use the same lame lines and corny jokes. How’s that crow tasting bud??? Now you get to slam some more qb’s that replaced your “cold blooded ASSASIN…
lol….you moron that is actually not me.
Whats more funny is, I got you agreeing with some of my comments if you go back in the past.
ninermd for someone that keeps whinning about oneniner being booted, I have to say you are one goon that just doesn’t get it.
Oneniner has taken over your life, the same thing you claim you hated oneniner for, you are now doing.
Brilliant oneniner has actually cloned you to be him. With you still crying the oneniner lagacy lives on.
Lol….. Right it’s not you. Like camelo wasn’t and it was being deleted. You aren’t fooling anyone onelame. Again your ……. OCD gives you away. Work on that old ninja of double posting. Buhahahahaaaaa and how’s that crow tasting G? Lmao
And look Dustin is onelame again. How many screen names do you have? Dustin, camelo, randy, josh, James, are these names you have to use? Lmao. It’s truly pathetic. How’s the 3 rd boot working for you? Back in the soup kitchen line again. Ha ha ha haaaa. You are THE most pathetic Smither ever. Cya Dustin/camelo/onelame/nineruno/………
Hmmmm. Nineruno/Dustin/and onelame all in here at the exact same time. Lmao! All bashing Harbaugh and ck. the best part is you typing in 3rd person pretending someone else really has your back. …….”creepy”
If oneniner is really there, he loves what you are doing md.
Ever since being banned, he has you looking behind every door. Checking every hallway. You hear him coming when nobody is there. You’re a loser. One pathetic low life loser. Instead of enjoying the fact oneniner is gone silently, you are afraid he is here with every post which disagrees with yours. And that isn’t hard to find.
Keep it up. At the very least you entertain everybody.
Three weeks ago, Kaepernick’s career high point, he looked pretty good.
Since then:
Two weeks ago the 49er defense outscored the Kaepernick led offense.*
This week the Kaepernick led offense outscored the Rams offense. For the Rams.
I’m cringing to see what kind of “progress” Kaep brings to his game this week. Noted “QB whisperer” Harbaugh better bring his whispering to audible levels before the season slips way entirely.
*techically a tie. Still, a pretty sad showing
Did you see JH’s face during the press conference, he looked like a dad expecting a baby but the baby won’t come out.
That makes you feel good huh? Glad you’re happy with a loss. How about you ribico? Are you happy about this loss or are you still rolling with ck?
>>are you still rolling with ck?
We have no choice, do we? It’s up to Harbaugh to coach him up now.
I remember a certain 7-9 team that had a pretty good defense at the time and dismal offense beating another certain division rival twice in their playoff/Superbowl years. Can anyone name these two teams? Some teams just don’t match up well vs other teams. It’s a divisional game where anything can happen.
Some of you have to come to the conclusion that Smith isn’t the man Harbaugh wants running this offense. So lets talk shoe on other foot like one of you brought up yesterday.
1 o-line stunk
2 in Harbaugh we trust
3 dropped passes
4 bad calls
5 offensive penalties
6 defense didn’t stand when they needed to
7 play calling was horrible
8 Ginn didn’t help his player out by falling on the ball or knocking it out of bounds.
9 receivers weren’t getting open
10 st (Akers) blew the game
Now all of these happened. And I’ve heard all of these alexcuses for years when he failed. And some of you defensed these excuses till the death.
I for one will not use them all. Yes some changed the game. And I’ll look at what he did do good under these circumstances.
Two good 90+ yard drives
Put this team in
Position to win with under 3 minutes to play.
Again helped out them in position to win in OT
So if we’re talking about hypocrisy. Maybe the original hypocrites should look at themselves. Ck could have done more to help win this game. No doubt! But I can’t see where smith would have faired any better.
>>But I can’t see where smith would have faired any better.
Who is talking about Smith? I’ve not mentioned him at all, I prefer to comment on events that have taken place in the real world, not someone’s ginned up fantasies.
In the real world, CK is the starter and the Niners need to win out or there’s good odds they fall into the wildcard round. There’s a slim chance they miss the playoffs entirely.
We’ve hitched our future to the decision making abilities of, essentially, a rookie. Is he good enough to overcome the team drawbacks you’ve itemized? He’s regressed and we need Harbs to pull a coaching miracle out of his hat for this team to have a shot this year.
Well said MD
I’ve had the night to sleep on it, and I change my grade for Kaep from an F to a D+/C-. Too many big mistakes, only two nice plays (one of which was dropped….argh!).
This next game is B.I.G. for the 49ers. If Kaep struggles again, the players will justifiably start to wonder if it was the right move. Would Harbs go back to Smith after 3 sub-par games from Kaep? How would that go over in the locker room?
I really hope that Kaep plays well against the Fins, or things could get distracting and ugly.
Under Harbaugh, the Niners have never lost 2 in a row. every subpar performance has been followed by an outstanding one.
I think CK and the team will bounce back. There are too many folks with knee jerk reactions. This team will be fine CK at the helm.
Listening to Matt Maiocco this morning was interesting. He said that Colin Kaepernick is absolutely starting this next week and every week after. This was not a one or two game experiment. This move was made to get him prepared for the playoffs. Put the AS wet dream aside and focus on the big picture of the football team folks.
Maiocco said Harbaugh is upset with himself and places blame on the coaching staff for calling the pitch play. Too high risk for the situation.
Second, Colin was both outside the tackle box and got the ball beyond the line of scrimmage on the safety play.
Third, after speaking to Delanie Walker knows that the pass to him was misjudged and should have been caught for a TD.
The last thing mentioned was that the Rams were creating pressure with just four and dropping linebackers back into coverage. Basically pointing out that the Oline had a bad game.
Chill out on this one folks. The Rams are a top 12 defense and match up very well against us as a divisional opponent. Colin is our man. Lets get ready for the Dolphins!!!
I’m chilling.
All your points are valid, but I note that Maiocco also said earlier that there was no way Smith loses his job this year to Kaepernick.
Must. Destroy. Dolphins.
If we play well at all 3 phases of the game I think we can win a couple of playoff games. I dislike the High risk/High Reward approach but that’s we have to deal with. I still think we’ll have more high’s than lows
Good points. The Smithers had their day. Congrats! I’m betting we win Sunday, the in NE, and lose in Seattle. Hey the 2-1 run might have some teeth. Lol
I have not re-watched the game yet but in the middle of the third quarter the O-line started pass blocking better and then Kaep started getting into a grove. We seemed to have the game in hand. Then Roman goes back to either overly conservative or trick plays destroying Kaep’s momentum. Two things are obvious to me, the 49er’s need to game plan around Kaep’s strength and they need to really really work to improve their pass blocking.
Kaep had a decent game but I’m a little disappointed by some of the bias on the board both for Kaep and Alex. Games that we lost when Alex was the QB weren’t a direct result of his actions but poor team play overall. This game that we lost with Kaep at the helm wasn’t completely his fault either, even with the turnover. Poor Oline play and terrible play calling by GR have a big hand in this loss, which seems to be a common theme. I think the biggest blame should be on GR for his terrible gameplan and lack of adjustments. No one in the league counts a 51-yard FG as automatic, especially not when your kicker has shown that he’s fallen off from last year.
In short everyone should relax. The ship is not sinking with Kaep, Alex had bad games, Kaep will have bad games. We are still in the drivers seat for a playoff bye thanks to the Win over GB earlier in the season
Roman called some nice plays. Keep in mind the only game CK has truly looked great in was a game plan for AS. The game plans the pat two weeks were designed around CK.
Considering AS’s last complete game as a Niner was a 24-3 blowout win against a dominant D on the road in which he set a record for completion & with the one pass being an Incomplete, I’m betting AS could have done the same to the Bears as well. Maybe not the same style, but the same domination. The protection CK had in that game was monumental. AS was rolling. And we let him roll off the table.
BS,
Before you post again please go read football for dummies. You bring the quality of the blog way down.
Ahhh.
Bay. Happy now that AS isn’t playing. What a great game.
Loser. Hater. Racist. Sexist. And Grant puts up with you. Not a good judge of character.
Grant and the entire room put up with your long rants that have nothing to do with real football.
The second you posted that you’d take Dilfer over Marino Grant should have banned you. Just for having a below kindergarten understanding of the game of football. Even Dilfer would open hand slap you in the face for that.
Post less. Listen and learn more BS. Go do something you are better suited for like Comic Con.
Good post AJ.
Jack:
This the-team-lays-an-egg-every-third-game thing (although, to be fair, the defense played well yesterday) has become very annoying. More importantly, the 49ers have to play at least three playoff games to win the Super Bowl, so it doesn’t bode well for their chances.
I assume it is coincidence, but I am left to wonder whether the Rams, Vikings and Giants share something in common that might explain the 49ers’ poor showings in those games.
I agree that this sucks, no Forty Niner fan should be happy with a loss. However, those going nuts about anyone who critical of the QB play, especially after the way the switch was made, is pathetic. Can they not see the hypocrisy of some of their statements.
This loss was not on the defense, as some had called out.
This loss is on the offense, and if Colin Kapernick is the starter, then we all should be able to critique him, just like when Alex Smith was the starter.
So I agree that we all should calm down. But that will not happen, based on past actions and ill will that is spouted on this blog.
@tree
“Can they not see the hypocrisy of some of their statements?”
That’s the crux of it, Tree, and you know the answer to your question. For some, there’s no debating, just regurgitating. Both ‘sides’ in their playground arguments. Cyber Warriors tilting at windmills.
Tastes Great. Less Filling. CK! Alex! Tolzein! Nate!!!!
What my lying eyes saw was a failure to control or even get a stalemate along the (offensive) line of scrimmage through most of the 1st half and third quarter. But surely (*Insert your preconceived favorite here) would have made everything different.
That is the truth….
cannot have an intelligent conversation with out getting called a “hater” or a “Smither”.
I did not like the switch, going on the record for that. having said that Colin Kapernick is the QB, and should be held to the same standard as Alex Smith was. Not all are doing that, oh well.
Intellegent….
Great post. Ck Didnt have the game most wanted. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great either. It sucks that some on here are celebrating a loss in memory of their favorite player. And sweep the alexcuses under the rug because the name on the jersey is different. Welcome to the press democrat. Where hypocrites run wild. And war between “fans” are the norm. It was only obvious the coin would be flipped before smith makes his departure from San fransisco.
Who is celebrating the loss?
Really Claude???
@ninermd:
Really.
And trolls don’t count.
Trolls??? You mean onelame and his 5 different screen names? Or bs and its knowing more than Harbaugh? Or jdilla, ribico, angus, slamming this young kid in a loss? And taking pokes at him? Do you just search for the ones you don’t like and read their comments only? I think you’re pretty smart Claude. Do you agree that an 8 year vet should have a little more critism than a second year qb? Not that it’s totally both qb’s fault when a game is lost, but c’mon. You see the comments.
@ ninermd:
None of what you describe = celebrating yesterday’s loss. Perhaps you meant “expressing frustration” or “settling scores,” both of which seem to be primary functions of this blog.
Frustration because their only reason for being on here wasn’t playing. Not because the team lost. Where are the comments about Akers, DW, and the safety that was bunk, or the fact that Ginn on a bad toss Didnt hustle for that ball? Nowhere!
The laughing and taunting on a game day loss. Is celebrating their own agendas at the teams expense.
Claude you can’t keep it real and won’t call your side out. So there is no use in talking about this anymore. Ck and Harbaugh will prove everyone of you guys wrong. And when they do. Ill be waiting for the comments on how he still doesn’t measure up to the elite Alex (backup) Smith.
>>Or jdilla, ribico, angus, slamming this young kid in a loss?
Yup. We should celebrate that our QB gave more points to a 3rd rate team than that 3rd rate team could score itself.
Who’d have thought that old critic md would be calling for participation medals?
MD,
I was disappointed by Kaep’s performance. I’d hope you were too. It’s doubly painful for me, as I had Kaep starting in my fantasy league, which was also a loss….tragic.
I’m hardly celebrating the loss, MD. Your suggestion that I am is false, misleading, and not grounded on any factual basis. It’s just plain slander.
I didn’t think Harbaugh was going to switch to Kaep until after the Saints game. I wasn’t entirely comfortable with it, but I defer to the coaching staff, and root for whoever’s under center.
I’m rooting for Kaep to step up next week and thrash the Dolphins. I’m concerned that if he doesn’t, the QB controversy will return, and our season will be in jeopardy. We’ll have to see what happens!
@ninermd:
That’s b/s. The idea that commenters who supported Smith didn’t care about the team is nonsense made up by other commenters who were upset that their arguments against Alex Smith were proven wrong last year.
More importantly, expressing that frustration still doesn’t equate to celebrating a loss. So, again, who is celebrating yesterday’s loss?
And stop trying to put me on a “side.” The only side I am on is that I am a fan of the 49ers. I have called out buffoons like jordan and bay, not because I disagree with their opinion, but because they repeatedly make up b/s to attack a member of the team and other commenters who dared to disagree with them.
As for game day laughing and taunting, where was your outrage last year when bay, jordan, etc. would do that? Hell, they care so much about the team, they would do it after a victory.
I think I see why you are so desperate to label others as hypocrites. It deflects attention away from you.
What have I ever written that would lead you to believe that I don’t want Kaepernick to succeed? He’s the starting QB for the 49ers; of course I want him to succeed.
Finally, you have repeatedly stated that you thought Smith should remain the starter. If the 49ers succeed with Kaepernick at QB, won’t he be proving you wrong? How are you going to say “I told you so” to anyone else? Who do you think you are, jordan?
But it’s funny to see some here talk about “team” now when they hadn’t done in the past. The same ones who would criticize AS in wins.
To me, last year’s title game was a team loss, the losses this year are team losses. Not doubt Kaep can do things better than ASmith, but don’t dispute, at this stage, that Smith might be able to do a few things better due to experiences. Some here will argue w/ that too.
True Albert… I use to be one of them that put more on the qb. Especially a 7 year vet qb. I’ve also critized coaches and other players also. Was ck most of the problem yesterday? I think so. And the reason I think smith wouldn’t have done any better is, the fact that he’s never played well with pressure on him all day. Ck had so many rushing yards, not because he was looking to run instead of throwing, it was because he was pressured most of the game. Look back at some of my posts earlier this year and last season. I have smith his props for good games and hammered his bad games. Sorry most are more down on a vet than a second year player.
@md
And I’ve never said AS is without blames in losses.
I don’t deny Kaep can escape from pressure better than Alex, but your “the fact that he’s never played well with pressure on him all day” is a blanket statement and there must be a few close games that he won as a part of a TEAM. And plenty of examples around the league that qbs didn’t play well w/ pressure on him. LOL
AS is a 7 yrs vet, yes, but most of the years were setback years. Took one step forward under NTurner and next year’s TEAMtook a couple of steps back.
After all these, AS is only 3 years older than Kaep.
I am concern now that injuries are creeping up, almost like the same time as last season, that might affect the TEAM. But I’m glad it won’t be Joe Hastings as a sub. LOL
I don’t blame Akers
I don’t blame Roman
I don’t blame JH
I don’t blame Walker
I don’t blame the O-line.
Why?
Because what we heard was with CK starting we will be up 20 points by half time, we would have lots of passing yards, our offense will be blowing teams away.
Well I don’t see it, I see the offense getting worse.
I don’t see screen passes to WR’s
It just seems the offense has regressed alot after playing way better when Alex was QB.
Did Alex sleep with JH wife? There is got to be somethinbg here.
No way CK leads us to the SB, we are in the rebuilding mode.
@nerdo
AS has a hot wife of his own. If he slept with JH’s (who I haven’t seen), he’s a turd.
And JH is the one who put in CK. Don’t blame CK for the loss. I don’t think he purposely played poorly. The kid did his best. It stank. That lies on JH for putting the kid in a poor position to start with. A good coach puts his players in spots where they are going to be successful. A bad coach puts them in spots where they aren’t and actually hurts their development. Last week, JH was a bad coach for doing what he did. And he got his just rewards for it. It is up to him to acknowledge it, or we’ll lose more games we should have won.
DS
So you know more than JH?
Nick
I don’t know football as well as JH. But I’ll wager I know people just as well as he does.
What JH did. How he did it. His “hot hand” comment. Not naming CK the actual starter for the season. That is BAD.
Did you see JH doing the shoulder patting thing? No way is CK going to think you are legit coach doing that. You did the same to AS and you dumped him.
That certainly goes for Frank Gore, who was treated to a Jimmy Raye special all day yesterday. It seems that Fischer discerned that Roman’s ego would not let him get around the fact that the run game was stopped — as long as he let gore escape for 23 yards initially.
All day Roman kept doubting his doubt. This time we can break it…and so on.
What is with the predictable runs on 1st and 2nd down in the 4th and ot quarters? Why get backed up with 3rd and long and know blitzers are coming?
Isnt it interesting that Ted Ginn Jr was on the receiving end of the option toss that got screwed up>? Was it last week that he muffed a punt that resulted in 8 points for the other team?
Seahawks QB Russell Wilson did exactly what his team needed in the fourth quarter and overtime.
49ers QB Colin Kaepernick did not do exactly what his team needed in the fourth quarter and overtime.
But Wilson didn’t make that list of Grant’s! We all know why. Because Wilson focuses on winning games and isn’t pretty playing them. Doesn’t put up godly numbers. Just enough to get his team into 2nd place and threaten us for the division lead with a game between us in a few weeks up in Seattle.
DS
If you like Wilson so much, go root for the Seahwaks. All i hear from you is hate. Get over it Smither. Your hero will NOT start for the Niners again – barring an injury. Get behind the team and stop the hate.
Your hero lost a game AS would have won. Instead of actually evaluating his play last week, you gave him a pass.
Guess what? His play last week wasn’t an abberation. Teams know what to do to stop CK. And if CK wastes a defenseive performance like that, he’ll be watcing Wilson in the playoffs.
CK isn’t getting any kind of “pass” with me. You replace 19-5. You had best be at least 20-4 or better/win the Supe Bowl in that time frame.
Do you think JH made the right decsion Nick? Dumping the player of the week for this?
Yes or no? JH messed up big time. And he doesn’t get a pass either. I don’t idolize him as a God as some here do with Joe Montana and others. All players and coaches are up for criticism. And if this game doesn’t deserve a LOT of criticism, then you’re not evaluating them. Which is fine. But not when you sat there evaluating every stinking snap AS took finding fault when he won games just like this.
Lmao bs thinks the panic button should be pushed. Like Smith wasn’t qb when we lost 2 games earlier in the year. Or like smith is a qb god and would save the dismal 8-3-1 season. Oh my! Season is over. Bs knows more than Harbaugh and no longer believes what he says. Like it use to. Bs says….. “I go by what the coach wants, and he wants Smith” doooote!!!!!
Wilson is garbage and has NO game. Their defense and running game is the reason they are mediocre at best. They can’t win on the road. And since they did yesterday in Chicago. Now all of a sudden Chicago is a beast again. But not when we thrashed them Monday night. Lmao!!!!
DS,
I see it now DS, your man crush is sitting on the bench and you have found a new love with Wilson. Does that mean you will be rooting for the Hawks against the Niners. Yes CK did mess up one game, your boy toy has stunk the building up in 4 games this year, two of them they lost and two the defense won for AS.
Got me there Neal!
I’ve seen Wilson for 1 game. Which was the one we beat him. Who was the QB who beat him by the way Neal? Do you think your boy will beat Seattle in Seattle?
Get over your man-crush comments. The only one with a man-crush is you.
DS
YES, absolutely JH made the right decision. Just sit back, relax, and watch an amazing playoff run.
Neal/MD
DS and a few other posters are Delusional and don’t know where to direct their anger over the benching of their hero. The fact that they’re gloating after a loss is pathetic.
Nick slow, your hoping this turns out to be another miracle like the baseball Giants but even as stupid as you are, you know that CK’s performance is not so convincing going into the playoffs.
Nick,
DS is that annoying relative that everybody can’t stand, but you feel sorry for him and invite him to Thanksgiving dinner, kind of a know it all, he thinks he knows everything about football and QB’s and of course was so helpful with his knowledge on cancer. Nick just eat a few blueberries and your cancer will disappear. What a numbnut !!
So Neal how many games that CK has played did the defense win or give him a chance to win?
I will say the Bears, NO, and last night. Thats 3 out of 3.5 games.
Primate
I trust JH’s Judgment over yours monkey boy. You must be the stupidest person on this blog. Your bitching and whining is nothing more than piss and vinegar. CK is the starter. AS is keeping the bench warm. Deal with it.
Actually, Kaepernick did. However, unlike Sidney Rice, Delanie Walker has cinderblocks where his hands are supposed to be.
AS would of been sacked 8 times yesterday, he is a sack specialist.
Kaep did put the 49ers in position to win the game in the fourth quarter and the overtime period. But a dropped Delanie Walker TD pass and a missed Akers FG ended our chances.
And CK ended any hopes of a shut out by running back 17 yards to take a safety. AS just would have gotten sacked minus the free points.
Kap is the future of the organization. I believe Harbaugh has to stay with him now that he has made the change. I believe harbaugh made the change to soon he should have waited untill next year but its to late for that. Steve Young said a few weeks ago to Tom Tolbert that game management is the most important skill a QB must have to win in the NFL. A QB can possess all the physical talent in the world if he ca’nt manage the game he will lose. Its so funny to me that AS’s real strength “game management” was made fun of here but the lack of it is what cost us yesterday. I hope Kap sticks close to AS the rest of the year and learns game management from a master of that craft. Go Kap Go Alex Go 9ers
@ old coach:
There you go again with yet another reasonable, insightful and mature comment. Don’t you know comments like that are ignored on this blog?
Old coach,
Kaepernick was managing the game. The play called by the coaching staff that led to the TD was on the coaches. It was the equivalent of throwing a curveball in the dirt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. You don’t do it.
To me the biggest mistake CK made was not staying in bounds on the one run. The clock would have wound down forcing the Rams to take their last time out.
He’s a smart kid. He will get better.
The final filter for plays called in from the sidelines sits in the huddle and goes by the title of QB. He can kill the play if it is a horsesh** call. Perhaps that is the real problem here. It is called Game Management.
I think we all can agree on that. No one wants a Tony Romo around here.
Bay, you wrotw, “[t]o me the biggest mistake CK made was not staying in bounds on the one run. The clock would have wound down forcing the Rams to take their last time out.”
I agree completely. In my mind, that play was worse than the saftey. And while it was not worse than “The Pitch” in term of its effect on the team, it is worse in terms of Kaep’s individual performance. The Pitch is a play gone bad for a variety of reasons. The failure to keep the clock running is all on the QB. Of course, the upside is that Kaep is bright and a hard worker. I believe he will learn from this.
Sorry, Fourth & Alex – this should have been in response to Bay above.
Also:
wrotw = wrote
and
saftey = safety
I would blame the errors addressed above on my phone, but in truth I was too hasty and did not proofread prior to clicking on “Post Comment”.
Actually JPN, around here you can just blame AS for all your problems in life and it goes for everything.
Maiocco also said that the coaching staff knows they were outcoached. Maiocco said that he repeatedly heard players say that the Rams defense was in the right position for just about every play the Niners ran yesterday.
I am wondering though like Jack said yesterday why folks are not more up in arms about a few players in particular. In fact you don’t hear anything about them at all.
1. Goldson- hit a sliding QB drawing a 15 yard penalty and putting them in a position to kick a field goal.
2. Akers- this guy has dropped off so much. Prior to hitting the field he actually looks scared to kick. Not an ounce of confidence in his expression right now.
3. Walker. Over the last two years this guy has more big drops than any other Niner receiver. After the game he admitted the potential TD pass was perfect and he misjudged it.
Back to work. We have the Dolphins on Sunday…..
Why?
Because people like you over hyped CK…
See that was simple…
So tree. If its only 3 games how is it either overhype or under hype? Or is it you’re just bitter and think you know more than Harbaugh? Maybe some dont overhype they just feel “like the coach does” ck gives this team a better chance to win. It’s not like an elite Superbowl winning qb was replaced
Did I say I know more then the Coach? No…
Are you Bitter?
Can you not take any criticism?
Some people did not agree with the switch, fine, but your pathetic whining at them about not being on board is just as stupid as DS post about AS would have won the game if he was playing.
Are you not the same person who stated that the defense hold the opponent to a low score the offense needs to step it up?
Yes I am. And who’s whining? You? Ck and the offense Didnt do their job. What else have I said? And that’s fine some dont trust in the switch, but these are the same people who stated “in Harbaugh we trust” where’s the trust tree? Go on and answer that. It’s great for me to see the hypocrisy on this blog. Now that their qb isn’t in favor anymore. And secondly. Where have I mentioned your name first? Sounds like you’re the one who likes to keep this going
txtree
1. What is AS ‘s record in low scoring games during the JH era?
2. How is AS with not committing TO’s in the JH era?
3. How is AS at not running back into the endzone and just taking the sack between the liens?
Add the three together and how good is AS in the JH era.
It ain’t stupid to say AS wins this game. Every piece of actual fact (not think) supports that he would have won that game. You learn history to predict the future. History says AS wins this game.

@ninermd
“So tree. If its only 3 games how is it either overhype or under hype? Or is it you’re just bitter and think you know more than Harbaugh?”
What do you call this?
As for whining…What do you call your posts?
So remind me again what the standard for QB play is? I seem to see a double standard. Colin is the QB for now, he should be held to that standard.
Good Points (cause I agree).
Bay,
I actually forgot all about the absolutely stupid penalty Goldson took. Inexcusable. As for your other points, all well made, and all contributed to the loss. Doesn’t change my opinion that Kaep needs to do better. I think, and hope, he will.
Angus,
I agree. We’ll get them this week.
I don’t know what happened to Walker, but you’re right. The past couple years he can’t hold on to anything. I honestly think he has dropped more passes than he has caught. Earlier this year somebody suggested that he’s had the drops since the broken jaw, but he dropped a ton of balls last season and didn’t get hurt until December. Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s how I remember it.
I used to think he was one of the most underrated TE’s in the league, but there’s no point in having a receiver who can’t receive. Like I said in another post, he does a lot for this offense, but a tight end who drops more than he catches? Inexcusable.
Bottom line:
CK made plays Alex won’t attempt.
CK made errors Alex won’t make.
If CK can keep errors to a minimum, he is better than Alex.
If Alex can learn to make plays, he’s better than CK.
My biased opinion is that CK can learn to minimize mistakes sooner than Alex can get past the mental block of throwing only to receivers that are wide open.
Which camp you are in pretty much comes down to the first two statements. Obviously if we could mold a Kaepersmith that would be a tremendous QB. But we don’t currently have that, so we must trust that Kaepernick can fill the gap between them sooner than Alex can based on the speed at which Alex has shown growth.
+1,000,000
@ Fourth and Alex:
That’s a reasonable assessment of the differences between the players (although I would probably change “won’t attempt” to “is reluctant to attempt”) and an acknowledgement that you have to take the bad with the good – which is true for every player.
It’s all moot, however, unless Kaepernick gets hurt or completely sh!ts the bed over the next couple of weeks (unlikely). Now that Harbaugh has chosen to exit Smith Highway in the belief that Route Kaepernick is the surer way to the Super Bowl, he has to continue down the road, no matter how bumpy it gets, at least until it is clear that the road is blocked (sorry for the strained metaphor).
Quick question – wasn’t Smith’s TD pass to Crabtree in the Cardinals’ game a pass to a receiver who wasn’t wide open?

No prob ribico. It took a whole 3 minutes to do. If you’re going to ride with ck because you’re “forced” then why roll with “Krap” on your shoes? All good. You’re here to stir up trouble and get the backs of the Smith hypocrites…. Wait your own back. “In Harbaugh we trust” lmao what a joke!
“In Harbaugh we trust.”
Yes, and:
“Trust, but verify.”
Someone you might have admired once said that, no?
For better or worse, the rook is our starter (not officially a rook, but he’s playing up and down like one, making boneheaded mistakes like one). We have to trust Harbaugh can plan around his strengths as well as plan around his weaknesses. You know, manage him. Or as Jordo likes to say, change his diapers.
I’m trusting that trust is not misplaced. Or as Hof likes to say, TBD.
Maybe we are being a little harsh on the kid. He only made one bad mistake on the bad pitch to Ginn other than that he did pretty good. Rookies will make mistakes like that and I am sure he will learn from it. Frankly I would much rather have this kind of game now than in the postseason.
I think hat was most obvious was that Roman was out coached. Fisher is a great coach and he had a game plan on how to collapse the pocket with zon blitzes and then on how to cover the running lanes once the pocket had collapsed. I think Kap did OK not great in making the best out of a failed down. The calling was terrible. Like Grant said there should have been called plays like screens and WR screens, Bubble screens to take advantage of the defenses aggressiveness.
Also Akers is not money anymore. And Dalanie missed a Beautiful deep pass on 2nd and long that could have been a long TD.
DW has done that with AS all year. See the Giants game. He didn’t prevent the first AS Int.
And CK is to blame for running back for the safety. I don’t care if the ball went to the LOS or not. AS never gets it to the point where the replacement refs determine it (has there been a difference?). He takes the sack at the 10 or so. And never runs back into the endzone.
CK thinks he is faster than NFL fatties. He isn’t. He couldn’t outrun the Seattle DE in his one play in that game, and he’ll get a lot more of him in a few weeks. QB’s like CK end up with a sum of 0 great plays with their athletic skills. He ran for 52 yards. But he gave up points with the safety. Points win games. Not yards.
News Flash
AS did not play no need to bring him up.
I don’t blame him for the safety (maybe you do but I don’t) it was the refs fault.
It wasn’t the refs fault for him running back into the endzone putting himself in a position needing the refs to make the right call. CK had a choice. He chose to run back forcing the refs to make a decision.
I don’t know if you noticed, but the regular refs suck just as much as the replacements. So don’t depend on them. If CK plays well, we blow the Rams out by a ton. Our D shut them out.
Just wondering. If you hit a car that ran a red light while you were driving 120 mph, do you blame the driver of the car running the red light? Or do you look at yourself for putting yourself into a stupid position?
You won’t get better if you blame the other guy. That much is fact.
Don’t act like Kap just callously walked in to the endzone, he was being rushed. And he did the right thing given the situation, to wit, throw it away. Could he have done better? Yes. But I’m not going to crucify him for it.
Anyway my point was that there is no need to say “Alex would have done better because we just don’t know”. Just like my last conversation with Nean.
My thoughts on the game are we might have messed with something that was working for something that might work.
I understand everyones excitement about CK but these types of things sometimes can have a reverse effect. No doubt he has all the tools but I am seeing a QB play worse each game as opposed to getting better each game. Now when I say worse I dont mean the physical aspects of the game, its more the mental side of things. CK made some very costly mistakes yesterday. The reason they are so concerning to me is because when pressured, the decsion making choices resulted in negative plays. The one thing Harbaugh has preached was turnovers. Turnovers are bad enough but when they turn into points for the other team, that cannot happen.
The one question that Harbaugh needs to be asked is the reason for the change was because they wanted to go with the “hot hand”. Well now that the “hot hand” is no longer hot, now what do you do?
The defense continues to play at a high level and give us a chance. The offense has not been very good the last two weeks. This is the time of year where we said that the passing offense needs to be clicking. It is not and it is now very much a concern going into ther playoffs. Vernon Davis, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree have all been average. The lose of MM does not help and as we seen yesterday, Frank Gore is slowing down.
It is not time to panic but it is also not time to say we have the Dolphins coming in and that will get us back to our winning ways. We might very well beat them or we might not. We are not playing well, and not just yesterday, the Saints game as well where the defense scored twice and CK could have made another two potentially game losing mistakes.
Did Harbaugh make a bad decision here, I hope not.
FDM
Mostly agree. But MC has actually been above average. He made a great play last week prventing an Int, as did RM. And he has gotten more YAC this year not going down with the first would be tackler more than any point in his career.
VD has been taken ouf of the game at the expense of other players getting chances (see MC). AS in his last game againt AZ, really made teams pay for it by finding the guy who doesn’t have 3-4 defenders around him like VD does every play. CK doesn’t. And I would’t expect him to be able to do so either.
This lies on JH. And solely on JH. Looking at the schedule, I’d say the Rams were the weakest team remaining. Our D showed up. We wasted a great performance (best of the year I think) because we couldn’t take advantage of the situations they made for us.
Until JH made this switch, I could care less if we had to go to Atlanta or GB or Chicago. Now, I do.
@Bay Akers and Walker i agree with you they both will be gone next year. I am sure about one thing Konrad Rueland would have caught that ball. As to the hit by Goldson they did’nt call the penalty for hitting a sliding QB they called him for helmet to helmet contact. His helmet never came within a foot of bradfords helmet. It felt like the refs had the 9ers especially our O line under a microscope and were’nt looking as closely at the rams
From Cam Inman: “Kaepernick said his 50-yard, fourth-quarter sprint was improvised, and coach Jim Harbaugh said it was a designed run”
Is it me or is Harbaugh starting to sound like he will say anything to justify himself, even though it is not true?
http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_22114523/san-francisco-49ers-grading-49ers-loss-st-louis
@ FDM:
I don’t get that impression. Harbaugh deflected responsibility away from Kaepernick and towards himself/the coaches for the disastrous pitch play.
You are right Claude, Harbaugh did take responsibility for the playcall as he should. Also, he was not going to say anything to throw Kap under the bus.
However, a pitch is still a pitch that is really not difficult for a pro QB. My concern is the decision making at that time by Kap. He was being pressured by Mikael, he made a terrible decsion under pressure. It happens. But in the playoffs, those pressure moments happen every single snap. Teams now know how to blitz Kap.
He was rattled yesterday. It started to show before the 1st half against the Saints.
You take away the long runs and evaluate Kap and tell me he is ready to go into the playoffs and win?
There are severl speeds in the NFL
1. Practice Speed
2. Pre-Season Game Speed
3. Regular Season Game Speed
4. Post season Game Speed.
CK can’t handle (3). There is no reason for me to think he can handle (4). I know AS can. Because he did.
@ EDM:
I may have misunderstood your 8:44 am comment. I thought you were saying that Harbaugh was trying to take credit where it wasn’t due. I now doubt that is what you meant. Would you care to clarify?
*@ FDM
Sorry about that. Not sure how I messed that up.
Claude I think JH was trying to deflect the criticism towards CK for the bad toss onto himself. He always stands up for his players.
My problem is that JH thinks he can mask inexpereince thorugh the next 4 games but in fact, those next 4 games are must wins. the pressure is mounting every week and CK is starting to show signs of the pressure getting to him. What happens when we get to the playoffs, he will b ready?
Like DS said, 3 weeks I ago I did not mind if we had to play ATL in ATL or NY in NY or CHI at home or even SEA. Now, not so much.
If that wasn’t designed, it was again, CK luck. He had two OL in front of him for that run.
@4th and alex Its not just a matter of the # of mistakes a QB makes its where on the field and what time in the game a QB makes mistakes. Kaps mistakes were’nt glaring but they came where and when we could at least afford them. For me stepping out of bounds was worse than the pitch. The pitch was partly horrible play calling and partly a physical mistake, stepping out of bounds was pure game management. I believe Kaps management skills will get better i just hope they wo’nt cost us a chance at the playoffs this year.
Were into week 14 and going forward with a kid with limited experience and it showed yesterday, hoping he can manage a game better. WTF?
We have put all our SB hopes on a kid that is cracking under the pressure because our head coach thinks he can overcome the lack of experience in 4 more games. Forget about two huge games on the road against possibly a playoff opponent and another against the master of game planning in Billy B, Kap needs to gain more experience to get ready. Again WTF?
This is bad on a number of fronts. The offensive depth is dwindling. Our pass offense and now run offense are average and we have a guy making some critical mistakes at the wrong time of year. Lets not forget about the INT before half against the Saints and another would be if not for Moss. All at critical moments of the game. Keep that in mind. Pressure moments in games. That’s every single second in the playoffs!
Anyone thinking the switch will click for CK needs to see that he has played progressively worse with each game, not better.
+1 Prime
Getting worse each game. Not better. And we will face better teams from here on out. Brady will put up points. More than 7.
If they truly want to win the SB this year, all these moves of putting CK in now are dubious. I like him and think he will do well, but I think it’s all too easy to bash Smith for his shortcomings and not realize what he does well. I think Harbaugh saw how good CK can be and threw him into the fire. CK took the loss hard, like a man.
I think they didn’t expect Smith to actually get better, he’s having a good year, maybe not elite but is certainly playing well. If they win it all with him, they are stuck with him and that’s what I think scares JH the most. He wants his own guy in there…
Winning is all that matters and you go with what gives you the best chance to win. If JH thinks that is CK, roll the dice and go. It looked like the right decision against the Bears because he had no choice. But since the 1st half against NO and yesterday against the Rams, teams are figuring out how to shake CK up into making bad decisions.
There is a reason rookie QB’s need a full season of starts. You dont become playoff ready in the final 5 games of the season or hope that your guy can because he has all the physicall tools. Harbaugh is a good coach but if he thought he could coach Kap through the mistakes this late in the season, with a championship team ready in all other areas, he needs to do some humbling on his own.
FDM
He can’t though. He screwed up with how he set this all up. This is all due to JH. JH is the reason why we went to the title game last year and if we don’t do the same this year, he’ll be the one responsible for that as well.
Smithers,
Kaep is starting next week, stop bashing him and the head coach, we will learn from these mistakes,we had to deal with 8 long years of Alex Smith
Yes Neal you might be right but lets not sweep the facts under the rug because JH has made good decsions since being hired. At some point, he was going to make some questionable decisons and this one is glaring and worthy of conversation.
Kap is starting to show his inexpereince and it cost us the game against a bad team. The defense played lights out and all Kap had to do was nothing stupid. Well he did, twice.
If you think that all the sudden he will become playoff ready in 4 weeks when he has to travel to SEA and NE and no gimmies with AZ and MIA, man you are in for a rude awakening.
Now before you get all bent out of shape and say Alex would not do any better, maybe but if you are a real 49er fan, you know this move by JH is questionable and its starting to show.
FDM,
what a freaking assenine comment. You said, “if you are a real 49er fan you know this move by JH is questionable and it’s staring to show”.
If you are a real 49er fan you would shut your mouth and trust your coach. You would see that he was moving away from AS and this was the moment he chose to do it in.
A real 49er fan would be looking at this from a big picture point of view knowing that this was a move to strengthen our offense for years to come. Regardless of what anyone thinks, AS’s production was not good enough. Harbaugh’s offense was not being run the way it’s supposed to be run. Unless you are supposed to run an offense with an anchor attached to it.
Trust the coach. Unless now you and the other ass hurt Smithers are smarter than Harbaugh too.
Smithers, find another team. Go. We won’t hold you guys back….
Bay you are a little hyper this morning and the only explanation might be that you are starting to doubt this decision as well. Football has a way of punishing bad decisions and this might be one by Harbaugh.
I trust Harbaugh, but what I dont trust is thinking that a rookie QB can learn on the fly and be ready to lead this team into the playoffs this late in the season. Maybe KAP is the better long term option, but how it was done and the timing of it was wrong and it is starting to show.
Do you think Kap has gotten better with each game or worse? I would say as more teams prepare for him, it has gotten worse. Timely mistakes that no long runs or super cannon arm can mask. He needed to be a game manager yesterday with the defense playing its best game. He does not know how because that is soemthing you develop over a full season of starts and playing time. Its week 14 for god’d sake! A time to start refining things. Insted we are reinventng our offense. Playcalling or not, you have to be able to execute and this offense and this personnel looks lost.
Piss and moan all you want like you usually do but the play on the field is concerning. You pretend its not if it makes you happy.
@ bay:
If you are a real 49er fan you would shut your mouth and trust your coach.
Yeah, just like you did last year.
Smithers, find another team. Go. We won’t hold you guys back….
Says the guy who said he would stop following the 49ers if Smith was the QB in 2013. Why do you think everyone is as obsessed with Alex Smith as you are? It’s funny, but you and jordan are the only commenters I know who have put their feeling for Smith ahead of their 49ers fanhood. And yet, you regularly accuse others of only caring about a single player.
Smh.
Claude,
the bitching I did proved to be correct since Harbaugh moved away from the QB that I complained about.
And my complaints were all geared towards one player. If I chose to back off for a while if they stuck with Smith it’s because it was taking the fun out of the game for me if I am going to be ultra honest. Don’t enjoy that style of play. Hated it when the Ravens did it and the Tennessee Titans as well.
But at least I would have been man enough to back off and not litter the room with throw up starting with attacking the best coach we’ve had since Walsh.
If anyone in this room thought that the move to CK would come without growing pains then you are dumber than a group of wildebeest crossing a river filled with crocodile.
@ bay:
The team went 13-3 last year and reached the NFCCG, and you “littered the room with throw up” all season long.
I also don’t think Harbaugh moved away from Smith because he wasn’t good. I think he moved towards Kaepernick because he thinks Kaep is better. Why you continue to conflate the two thoughts is not much of a mystery, but it is annoying.
I think most commenters recognized that going with Kaep this soon was going to mean suffering through growing pains. Although I won’t speak for him, I think FDM’s frustration stems from a concern that those growing pains are going to unnecessarily cost the team a shot at the Super Bowl this year. I realize that you believe the team had no such shot with Smith at QB, but it’s not an unreasonable concern.
And it certainly doesn’t make him any less of a 49er fan than you.
See Bay the cream always rises to the top and so does your lies. I have said all along that your problem was not Smith but the style of play JH employed. You finally admit it. Thanks.
You say “it’s because it was taking the fun out of the game for me if I am going to be ultra honest. Don’t enjoy that style of play. Hated it when the Ravens did it and the Tennessee Titans as well”.
Meanwhile the team went 19-5 over the past year and half with Smith but that did not matter. It was how they were winning that was concerning to you.
Fo you its about entertainment. You dont care about winning. You care about being entertained and then maybe winning. Fanatsy football fan or what? Is this why you gave up your season tickets? Cause the Niners played a brand of footbal you did not like or was it cause of Smith?
You are a a pathetic fan. I knew it all along. You want high flying football, go watch areana league.
This decsison is going to cost the Niners. JH thinks he can reinvent his offense in week 14 when in reality its starting to spiral already. Maybe they get away with it against Miami, but reality will once again hit when they play two playoff teams in SEA and NE on the road.
FDM,
You do realize that Alex Smith is not coming back
1. Hes been replaced by Kap.
2. JH believes Kap is better and hes not going to backtrack and make himself look like a fool.
3. Smith isn due 8.5 million next year.
4. JH believes that Kap has more upside.
The only things I realize 23 welcher is you are a welcher and our Superbowl chances are dwindling with this decision.
Smith, Kap, Tolzien, that is all pointless. JH has hitched his wagon to an unknown and the result is alarming after last nights performance.
@Neal i agree with you Kap will be the QB going foreward and I believe he will be a measurably better QB than AS for the long run. I also believe we had to suffer AS for 6 years but the last 1.75 years he has been a good QB and been a huge part of our resurgance.
Old Coach,
AS stunk this year against the Jets, Vikings, Giants and Seahawks. AS is not a consistently good QB, that is why he was benched.
FDM,
Of-course it is questionable, I loved the move, but I never ever bashed JH on keeping AS as long as he did. Yes their were mistakes made yesterday but look at the run, and look at all of those nice passes, yea the safety was stupid, he should not of been in the end zone to begin with but if the refs called it right, the pass was a couple of yards pass the line of scrimmage, the flip to Tedd Ginn was as bad as it gets, JH had blamed himself on the play also Ginn who has a history of not wanting to get tackle, made a poor effort of getting the ball, the safety or corner from the Rams wanted the ball much more, and Akers has become a goat this season. Keeping AS as the starting QB has also started to show, as he played lousy in 4 games this year, but the Smithers just care about wins and not individual performances where we can improve on.
Neal says “but the Smithers just care about wins and individual performances where we can improve on”
Of course we all should concern ourselves with winning. This is what its all about right?
My problem is that it is too late in the season to go with upside or potential when as we have seen, CK looks lost out there in the decision making process. Long runs are great, frozen ropes too, but none of that matters if you are giving teams points off your inexpereince and costing your team wins.
>>but I never ever bashed JH on keeping AS as long as he did.
It is hard for someone to bash someone over a .800 winning percentage and trip to the NFCCG in his rookie coaching season. But if there is someone who could do it, you’d be right up there as my first choice.
As i say here all the time AS was’nt nearly as bad as those here who hate him believe and not nearly as good as those here who love him purport him to be. the truth as usual lays somewhere between
Here is my beef with the playcalling after Kap’s big run in the 4th quarter:
First off, I have a problem with throwing on first down (the pass dropped by Walker). Even if you score a TD the Rams still would have had about 1:45 or so with a couple of timeouts to try and get a tying TD. If you run three times and kick a FG, the Rams get the ball at the 20 with about 50 seconds and no timeouts. I would much rather be up 3 with 50 seconds and no timerouts than up 7 with 1:45 and 2 timeouts.
However, if you do go for the TD on first down, than you have to try and throw on second and third down as well. What the Niners did was the worst case scenario. They saved the Rams a minute and one timeout and
still ended up with just a field goal. I had a sinking feeling at that time that we would ened up losing the game.
It seems to me that Greg Roman, has an dentity crisis. He gets overly conservative when boldness is called for, and then morphs into Mike Martz when three yards and a cloud of dust is the proper thing to do.
Abolutely positively CORRECT. Niners did the absolutely worst thing that could have done by throwing on first down. I was saying it as I was watching it. Sometimes, a first down is better than a touchdown, and this was one of them. Never lose control of the ball unless you have to do so.
@ Rick,
great great point. That is why the discussion of changing QB’s wasn’t even entertained after the game. Because the coaches knew they lost the game themselves.
DS94everXev says:

DW has done that with AS all year. See the Giants game. He didn’t prevent the first AS Int.
And CK is to blame for running back for the safety. I don’t care if the ball went to the LOS or not. AS never gets it to the point where the replacement refs determine it (has there been a difference?). He takes the sack at the 10 or so. And never runs back into the endzone.

Lmao post of the day. Sprinkled with a back up qb excuses
Ck isn’t that fast.
And blame for a safety that wasn’t a saftey by rule.
What a shock!
THEE ALL KNOWING BS EVERYBODY!!!!! Round of applause for the best commedy act on the Press! It will be here till next Sunday!
Ahhh….
BS (md) is lonely and has nobody to talk too. Get an education racist.
Moving on from this game and taking a look at what’s ahead, the 49ers are now in a situation where most likely it will take two wins out of the next four to win the division to get to 10-5-1 even if the Seahawks win three of their last four. Three of those games are at home (one against the 49ers) where they are hard to beat – and one road game against Buffalo. However, if they win out, they will be 11-5. So, since you can’t count on other teams helping you out by losing, the 49ers need to really win three of the next four to lock up the division and maintain a high seeding for the playoffs with both the Bears and Packers now only a half game back.
I’d really rather take the road to the SB starting at home with Kaepernick. The teams the 49ers will face in the playoffs are going to be better than the Saints and the Rams, no doubt, and playing them at home in a true playoff atmosphere with much louder fans, may not be where you want an inexperienced QB trying to win a game. To prevent that, 49ers will need to win 3 of 4 minimum, with winning all 4 the best scenario in case the Packers or Bears win out. I doubt the Bears will, but the Packers? Their toughest game is against Atlanta (due for a big loss), but the rest of their schedule looks winnable.
Anyway, a win yesterday would have made it a much easier road, but the 49ers are far from out of it, but the margin for error is slim and the team needs to play at a high level in all aspects of the game these remaining four to have their best shot at the SB.
To get to the playoffs, the 9ers only need to beat Seattle. Chicago and Green Bay need an extra game on the 9ers for home field due to head2head.
The dislike for CK from the AS contingent is not only obvious but to be expected.
CK had some bad moments but not a bad game. Did we really expect him to equal what he did against the Bears in every start?
Harbaugh needs to stay with CK the rest of the way because a change now further complicates and delays the inevitable.
I knew that even after a great outing against the Bears that CK would have some growing pains, but the he will learn from this and be a better QB going forward.
Sure AS may have been better with time management but to say that he gets the win is wishful thinking.
CK replaced 19-5 and NFC Offensive player of the Week.
He’d best do what he did in the Bears game. Because that is “the game” AS last played. Completely dominating a dominant D (he did it to AZ who was in a Must win game situation and playing in AZ). I don’t replace winning with losing.
I completely enamored with the transition and I made it known. But CK did replace AS, Harbaugh did.
AS hasn’t exactly replicated what he did against the Saints in the playoffs so to expect CK to replicate what he did against the Bears is overreactive.
Harbaugh is doing what he feels is best for the present and future of the team, and I’ll go along for the ride even if it means getting a flat titr now and then.
AES,
The people on here that disliked Smith, never attack JH on his decision, but the Smithers hate CK and JH. Although BS formerly known as DS, knows absolutely nothing about Quarterbacks and even most of the other Smithers think DS is limited just like her hero AS.
Neal, you need to come up with better arguements to be considered anything relevant on here. You keep sayin the same thing over and over again. We get it, we read it, but now you need a new outlook.
The QB move has been made. Many here, including me, said there is no turning back. Can I be critical? Hell yes and I have been. This is a unique situation changing QBs after an injury when the initial starting QB wasn’t playing subpar ball prior to the injury. Not being 100% in favor of the move is not 9er treason by any means. I chose JH as the reason for the loss in the poll. AS was playing some great ball before his injury. The team was winning period. Why mess with chemistry?
I don’t want to guess the wins for the balance of the season, but it doesn’t look good right now, especially with the injuries mounting, which is the main concern for the team. Last year when the playoffs arrived, the 9ers were thin at WR due to injury. This year it looks as though the RB group will be thin due to injury. In the meantime, with 4 weeks left, FG will be leaned on to take the lion’s share of the rushes and may in the process, get beat up. As a 9er fan, I’m optimistic, but it’s not looking good right now but I’m staying positive.
+1. Questioning things is not treason and makes you no less a Niner fan today than you were yesterday or in 1972. Keep it up, Hoferfan. Don’t let the bullies talk you out of your reasoned thoughts. I see you are open to the change but not entirely sure of its timing. You are not alone in that.
Let’s hope the utilization of Gore earlier in the season does not come back to hurt us in the final stretch. I’d love to see Anthony Dixon step up his game when he gets his opportunity.
The jumbo package and line pulling seemed to be working fine and the OL now has to switch gears to more pass protection for our new and exciting scrambling QB. Gore has laid out the wood with his blocks all year but especially so in the last three games. His blocking is becoming key but I hope it doesn’t mean his running will suffer like Vernon Davis’ receiving production has suffered this year.
Grant, Can you tell if the Ginn play would have made the first down but for the miserable pitch by Kaep??? I have watched the replay several times and it never shows the full field.
Had they gotten the snap off cleanly it had a chance. But the bad snap slowed the play down. From my standpoint it would not have gone for many yards.
It was third and three. Roman should have a called a pass. Kaepernick has been terrific on third downs.
Still it was a toss and for an athlete like CK it should have been 2nd nature. The problem no one wants to discuss is that under pressure, he has made bad decisions. Decisions that have been game changing. Thats becasue of inexperience. You learn these through a full regular season game schedule. Not week 14 when everyone is polishing their games. We are doing the opposite. We are trying to find an identity in week 14, what a bunch of crap that is.
FDM,
What decisions are you talking about. Over the last three games have you not seen all the big-time third down throws Kaep has made.
We have reintroduced the slant because of this kid.
@ Grant:
Assuming that Kaepernick has the discretion to kill the called play and switch to an alternative play, doesn’t the fact that he did not do so suggest that he didn’t think the alternative play would work?
CK 1TD. He is not that good when it mattered was he?
AS last game…3TD ALL on 3rd down. He was good when it mattered.
It’s definitely smarter to throw the ball forward than backward. Kaep was killing the Rams with short passes. Niners should have called lots more as Jenkins was giving all sorts of cushion in coverage and Gore was getting stuffed in the run game.
It doesn’t matter what the play call was at the time, you don’t make a mistake down there at that part of the field period.
Bay Im talking about the INT against the Saints before half. A play he should have just thrown away the ball.
The other INT that might have been 6 the other way if not for Moss in the same game.
And yesterdays safety and fumble for TD, and the play he got out of bounds when he stayed. Again all things you learn during a full season schedule, not week 14.
Take away the long runs, which will not happen in the playoffs, a defense that has played lights out in all the games he has started and you have an average QB looking more and more confused as we go thru the final games of the year.
Like Maiaocco said ” If you’re a 49ers fan, there’s no need to panic. But you’d be well within your rights to be a little concerned at this point.
Niners should have called lots more as Jenkins was giving all sorts of cushion in coverage
This.
Hof especially when you come from the pistol offense where that formation and toss are a staple in that offense.
@ FDM,
did you not hear that it was a bad call. Twice? He was outside the tackle box and the throw went way past the line of scrimmage.
As for the int, Kaep has roughly thrown what 80-90 passes. With one INT? That equates to what 6 Int’s a season for a QB that is seeing the field for the first time.
Andrew luck threw three INT’s alone yesterday.
You guys and your bull$hit unrealistic expectations for a player getting his first games in is ridiculous.
Save your harsh criticisms for players that get picked in the first round and are in their 8th year.
Forget the call, why is he dropping back 18 yards from the line of scrimmage and into the endzone? Stupid!
Bay says “bull$hit unrealistic expectations for a player getting his first games in is ridiculous.
This is the my entire arguement. Its week 14, we do not have time to endure the growing pains. Other playoff teams are polishing their games. We are reinventing ours. What dont you get about that?
Keep telling yourselves everything will be fine. We might escape MIA with a win but after that, it gets muddy real fast on the road in NE and SEA with a QB just not ready.
FDM,
I will give you that one, even though the Refs blew the call on the safety, it look like Kaep was going into the concession area to grab a hotdog, that was stupid.
Forgive my hatchet job on my last post.
I meant to say that I was not enamored with the QB transition, and that CK did not replace AS, Harbaugh did.
Matt Barrows channels old coach and Fourth and Alex:

Bottomline, a C- rating is generous. When a Defense holds a team to 1 field goal over 4 quarters, and 2 field goals over 5 quarters, the Offense should deliver a victory. Like it or not, regardless of the level of experience, the QB leads the Offense and needs to deliver with execution. Yesterday was a poor performance by the offense and Kaepernik. I would give him a score of D at best. Yes, plenty of blame to go around, but the Offense and Kaepernik performance was at best a D !
If Kap is our QB fine. But Harbaugh should be straight up on his analysis. If he thinks Kap played very good yesterday, then we are in for a long season and we will be watching the SB, not playing. Kap will play much better, and he needs to say that, not cover for how he played.
Constant pressure and no running game, yeah alex smith has won alot of games with those factors lmfao. Delanie Walker drops winning touchdown, akers misses a fg but those are only excuses reserved for smith. You guys crushing a guy starting his 3rd game some great fans we have around here. All I heard during alex smiths days were “hey trust harbaugh he knows qbs” now he benches your boy and you are hypocrites.
A cogent explanation of why yesterday’s game should not lead to panic:
