2013 NFL draft: Live blog – Day 2

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for Round 2 and 3 of the 2013 NFL draft. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press trailer at 49ers’ headquarters.

3:17 What do you think the 49ers plan is at slot cornerback? Do you think they’ll draft Jamar Taylor at No.34, or do you think they’ll draft Tyrann Mathieu at No.61? Or do you think they’ll just stick with Carlos Rogers?

3:36 The Jaguars pick S Jonathan Cyprien. The 49ers are on the clock. Let’s see if they can work out a trade down.

3:37 The 49ers traded down with the Titans. They give the Titans the 34th pick for the 40th pick, the 216th pick – a seventh rounder – and a third rounder next year. Good trade.

3:42 The Titans pick WR Justin Hunter.

3:49 The Eagles pick Stanford TE Zach Ertz. I had a feeling the 49ers wouldn’t draft. Interesting to note former 49ers’ executive and current Eagles’ executive, Tom Gamble, made the pick.

3:52 The Lions draft CB Darius Slay and the Bengals draft RB Gio Bernard. The Cardinals are on the clock.

3:57 The Cardinals trade down with the Chargers.

3:58 The Chargers took Manti Te’o, traded up for him. The Jets are on the clock.

4:05 The Jets take Geno Smith. They would. The 49ers are on the clock.

4:13 The 49ers draft Florida State defensive end Cornellius “Tank” Carradine. This is an excellent pick assuming Carradine returns to 100 percent health after his ACL surgery.

4:17 The Bills draft Robert Woods. Rough break for Woods. The Dolphins are on the clock.

4:19 ESPN scout Matt Williamson just tweeted this: “Tank will be OLB for 49ers, not a 3-4 DE.” I agree, his rookie season. But Carradine is Justin Smith’s heir.

4:30 The Raiders trade up with the Dolphins and take OT Menelik Watson, and the Buccaneers draft Johnthan Banks to complete their secondary. The Panthers are on the clock.

4:32 The Panthers draft Kawann Short, DT from Purdue. The Cardinals are on the clock with the 45th pick.

4:34 The Cardinals draft inside linebacker Kevin Minter from LSU. The Bills are on the clock, and they draft Kiko Alonso, OLB from Oregon. The Cowboys are on the clock. Good cornerbacks and wide receivers still are available if the 49ers want to move up.

4:38 The Cowboys draft TE Gavin Escobar to complement and eventually replace Jason Witten.

4:40 With the 48th pick, the Steelers draft RB Le’Veon Bell. The Giants, Bears and Redskins own the next thee picks.

4:44 The Giants Johnathan Hankins, DT from Ohio State. The Bears are on the clock, and they draft Florida linebacker Jon Bostic. The Redskins are on the clock. If the 49ers want to trade up for a cornerback, this a good spot.

4:51 The Redskins draft CB David Amerson, and now the Patriots are on the clock. They probably will draft a wide receiver or cornerback. Markus Wheaton or Jamar Taylor would be good picks here.

4:56 The Patriots take Jamie Collins and the Bengals take Margus Hunt. Jamar Taylor isn’t going to slide all the way down to No.61, is he?

5:00 No, he will not. The Dolphins take Jamar Taylor with the 54th pick. The Packers are on the clock.

5:01 The 49ers traded up with the Packers. I guess they want to take their cornerback right now. They’re on the clock at No.55.

5:02 Is it Tyrann Mathieu time? Or Blidi Wreh-Wilson time? Or Robert Alford time?

5:06 The 49ers trade picks 61 and 173 to the Packers and draft TE Vance McDonald from Rice. He’s more of an H-back than a classic Y tight end, because most of the blocking he did in college was in space, not in-line.

5:26 The Ravens trade up with the Seahawks and draft LB Arthur Brown, the Texans draft safety D.J. Swearinger to complement and eventually replace Ed Reed, the Bronocs draft RB Montee Ball to split time with Ronnie Hillman and Willis McGahee, and the Patriots draft WR Aaron Dobson.

5:29 The Falcons draft slot cornerback Robert Alford. The 49ers’ options at slot corner are dwindling. It’s looking like they can choose between Jordan Poyer and Tyrann Mathieu.

5:31 The Packers draft RB Eddie Lacy. The Seahawks are on the clock.

5:37 The Seahawks draft RB Chritine Michel, and that’s the end of the second round.

5:42 The Chiefs draft tight end Travis Kelce. Now Alex Smith has two good receivers to throw to – Kelce and Dwayne Bowe.

5:44 The Jaguars draft CB Dwayne Gratz. The Lions are on the clock.

5:46 The Lions draft OG Larry Worford. The Raiders are on the clock.

5:50 The Raiders draft pass rusher Sio Moore. Good pick. They’re having a good draft.

5:51 Tom Gamble drafts DT Bennie Logan from LSU. The Browns are on the clock.

5:57 The Browns draft slot cornerback Leon McFadden. The Cardinals are on the clock.

5:58 The Cardinals draft Tyrann Mathieu to cover Percy Harvin and Tavon Austin for the next five years. The run on slot cornerbacks is happening right now. Let’s see if the 49ers trade up.

6:03 The Titans draft CB Blidi-Wreh Wilson and the Rams draft T.J. McDonald. The Jets are on the clock.

6:09 The Jets draft OT Brian Winters. The Buccaneers are on the clock. They should draft QB Tyler Wilson right here. But they draft QB Mike Glennon instead. At least they recognize Josh Freeman is their weak link.

6:14 The Cowboys draft WR Terrence Williams. He’ll be a good deep threat for them. The Saints are on the clock.

6:20 The Saints draft Terron Armstead and the Chargers draft Keenan Allen.

6:30 The Dolphins draft OT Dallas Thomas, the Bills draft WR Marquise Goodwin and the Steelers draft WR Markus Wheaton to replace Mike Wallace. Brilliant pick by the Steelers.

6:34 The Cowboys draft SS J.J Wilcox and the Giants draft pass rusher DaMonte Moore. Moore should fit in well to the Giants’ defense.

6:38 The Saints draft DT John Jenkins. I like that pick for them. The Patriots are on the clock.

6:40 The Patriots pick CB Logan Ryan. Two more slot corners left for the 49ers – Jordan Poyer and B.W. Webb. Both guys run in the 4.5’s.

6:42 The Bengals draft S Shawn Williams from Georgia. The Redskins are up with the 85th  pick.

6:48 The Redskins draft Florida TE Jordan Reed. The Colts are on the clock.

6:49 The Colts draft OG Hugh Thornton. The Seahawks are on the clock.

6:51 The Seahwawks draft DT Jordan Hill from Penn State. The Packers are on the clock.

6:52 The 49ers just traded up with the Packers for the 88th pick, and they draft Corey Lemonier, DE from Auburn. The 49ers traded pick No. 93 and a seventh-rounder to the Packers in the deal.

7:13 The Rams pick Stedman Bailey, who will reunite with his college teammate Tavon Austin. The Rams now have four good receivers – Austin, Bailey, Chris Givens and Brian Quick.
