A Super Bowl victory won’t take the monkey off Joe Flacco’s back

By BOB PADECKY

Torrey Smith, the Ravens’ wide receiver, was singing the praises today about his quarterback. I brought him to a screeching halt with a question.

“If the Ravens win the Super Bowl, will the criticism of Joe Flacco finally stop?”

“No,” Smith said. “I don’t think it’ll ever stop. I mean, look at Eli Manning. He’s won two Super Bowls and he still gets it. If Eli can get it, Joe can.”

Funny thing about that. Earlier this season some Bay Area fans were saying Alex can’t beat the Giants. Giants fans were saying they wished Eli could control his Picks as well as Alex.

John Madden just awarded the San Francisco Forty Niners Offensive Line The Most Valuable Protectors Award. Now go back John up against the group that embarrassed you on Thanksgiving Day.

    • TIM says:

They didn’t have Kap at QB last Thanksgiving to make the O line look so good. Now the pass rush needs to slow down and check who has the ball before they go for the QB. That and other things Kap does makes the very good O line look even better than they are. That is what a great player does,he makes those around him better !

      • Grimey9er says:

Yes Tim, Kap does make a difference but this line is much improved this year. It goes both ways.

        Mike Sando, right on time.

They played the 49ers vs. Ravens game again the other night. Second time in a week.

I reiterate what I said the other day: The Thanksgiving Massacre O-line was terrible. There were situations where Gore was forced to pick off one of two free rushers to the QB. He nailed his guy but he couldn’t do anything about the second.

There was no time for a three-step drop, let alone the hitch-step and throw. It was a horrible performance capped off by sloppy penalties. The Anthony Davis Chop block negated a 70-yard TD strike to Ginn, for example.

This year’s line is 100% better. For Smith and for CK. Staley, as an example, was spanked last year when facing Clay Matthews. This year? Matthews had to sell more Fatheads, he was going nowhere.

Re-focused, firmed up, whatever you want to call it, it’s much better. They deserve the Madden award.

Sorry, meant last GAME against Green Bay.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Well technically, it was last year.

    • Bray says:

Different center, different RG, different QB, different offense, neutral field…. and the Niners get 2 weeks of prepartion instead of 3 days.
      Different result.

      • old coach says:

Bray i think goodwin started that game last year

      • Bray says:

old coach- I thought we had Snyder at C and Rachal at RG last year. I just remember the whole right side collapsing multiple times.

      • Grimey9er says:

Snyder started at RG but was injured and replaced by Rachal. Anthony Davis had a tough game.

      • msclemons67 says:

I wonder now how much of Davis’ struggles last year came from trying to compensate for Snyder/Rachal.

      • Grimey9er says:

I think Davis just has problems with certain guys, like Chris Long and Suggs. Hopefully he’ll be able to hold up in the SB.

  3. TIM says:

Too bad for Flacco (Flucco,as they were calling him in Baltimore when they lost 3 of their last 4 games this year,or was it 4 out of the last 5 ?),he won’t get the chance to see if the critics go away after a SB win …because he is going to lose and lose badly !
And too bad for the loudmouth showboat Ray Lewis too ! He and his deer antler spray will have to retire on a bad note of losing and of being shown to be a liar and banned drug user.(it’s on audio tape !).

    • Adam says:

Where’s the audio tape? Is there a link? I hadn’t heard about that.

      • TIM says:

The guy who sold the stuff to Ray recorded the phone order that Ray placed. Supposedly the reporters that printed the story heard the recording and that is when they wrote their story. The guy said Ray called him and asked for him to send everything he had that would promote quick healing of his injury (in October of this year) and he sent Ray a banned substance that Ray asked for.

      • Adam says:

Sounds kinda like entrapment. Of course after Armstrong trying to ruin every person that ever accused him of anything a little CYA might be required.

  4. Neal says:

I love these short snippets, Barbara and Padecky are doing a great job. I thought I was going have to go on Barrows or the Merc to get the inside scoop, these guys got it covered.

  5. undercenter says:

Southern California, Texas and Ohio State have never had a starting quarterback in the Super Bowl. As of Sunday, the University of Delaware will have two (Joe Flacco and Rich Gannon). From NFL.com

    • undercenter says:

Since he entered the NFL in 2008, the Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco has the most playoff wins (eight) by a starting quarterback. In that time, Flacco has one more playoff wins than Tom Brady (three), Peyton Manning (two), Matt Ryan (one) and Jay Cutler (one), combined. From NFL.com

    • undercenter says:

Through his first three games of the 2012 playoffs, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has eight touchdowns and no interceptions. In NFL history, five previous quarterbacks have completed a postseason with eight-plus touchdowns and no interceptions: Joe Montana, Steve Young, Phil Simms, Troy Aikman and Drew Brees. Each won the Super Bowl and was named the Super Bowl MVP. From NFL.com

      • TIM says:

Sounds like what we heard about Rodgers and Ryan not throwing any interceptions in several games…before they came up against us !
