Billy Cundiff on the 49ers’ kicker competition: “It’s a performance business.”

SANTA CLARA – Billy Cundiff made 10-of-12 field goals in Thursday’s kicker competition. He made a 55-yarder with a portable plastic holder.

Cundiff spoke at his new 49ers’ locker after practice, and here’s what he said.

Q: Do you know David Akers?

CUNDIFF: Yeah we went to the Pro Bowl together in 2010. We’ve worked with the same kicking coach, Randy Brown. I’ve kicked David in the offseason. We’ve texted back and forth.

Q: Is this competition awkward?

CUNDIFF: That’s a funny question. If you try to get in our shoes, then you’ll understand the business a little bit. It’s about performance. This time of the year, I’m just lucky to have the opportunity to put my best performance out there and see if it’s good enough.

Q: But is it awkward at all?

CUNDIFF: I don’t think it is. You just accept it as part of the business. It’s just about performance. When you put it on those terms, it takes all of the awkwardness out of it. It’s a performance business.

Q: How would you rate your performance in five games for the Redskins this season?

CUNDIFF: I didn’t really think it was that great to be honest. I missed a 62-yarder and 57-yarder. If you wipe those off, it’s a 70 percent which is pretty average. But I missed two short field goals and when you’re playing in Washington, that’s enough to get you gone.

Q: How many times did you and David kick in front of the team today.

CUNDIFF: Five, I think.

Q: How did it go?

CUNDIFF: Not bad. I think I’m getting the hang of this thing.

Q: Is it difficult for Andy Lee to hold for a lefty kicker and a righty kicker?

CUNDIFF: He told me he learned holding for a right-footed kicker.

Q: You have a chance to kick for a playoff team. How much does redemption for your missed field goal in the championship game last year play into your mind in wanting to erase that?

CUNDIFF: I think that anyone who plays in the playoffs and doesn’t have the performance they’d like wants another opportunity. For me, I moved on right after it happened. In order to have success in this league, you have to wipe the slate clean every year. You can’t drag things in, whether it’s positive or negative, because it’s a new year. Would I like to have that kick back? Yeah, I most definitely would. But is it going to affect the way I think about this year’s playoffs? Absolutely not.

    Kickers aside…
Why don’t we have any screen plays?? I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen one called..

    • exgolfer says:

The 49ers don’t have very quick offensive linemen. I believe that has something to do with the dearth of screen passes.

      • Nick says:

Perhaps you should stick to golf. The screen pass is much more about timing and patience than quickness of o-linemen.

      • Prime Time says:

Nick you should stick to dumb. The onlinemen have to be able to get out in space and pull to get down field and block LB’s and safeties in screen passes.
Iupati and Staley can do it, Boone and Davis struggle with it cause they don’t have quick feet.

      • exgolfer says:

        Nick,

Yes, I’m sure you’re right, quickness has nothing to do with a offensive lineman’s ability to get in position to block a screen pass after releasing pass rushers.

      • Nick says:

        Primate and Exgolfer

Talk about dumb and dumber. When will you guys release movie? Buhaha

Did I say quickness doesn’t matter? No. I said timing and patience are more important. Quickness certainly plays a role but it’s not as important as timing and patience when comes to screen plays. If you nitwits Had played football you would know.

      • Nick says:

        * realease the next movie?

      • claude balls says:

        @ Nick:

        Here, let me help you:

        * release the next movie?

      • Nick says:

        Happy new year Cluade Balls

      • claude balls says:

Careful, you might provoke me into misspelling “Nick.”

      • Prime Time says:

Between Nick, 23jordan, and Neal it’s like reading the writing of a 2nd grade student. Come on boys!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Gotta love the guy who calls out other posters as dumb and dumber and can’t spell correctly himself, and then in trying to correct the mistake messes it up again. LoL!

      • Nick says:

        Haha Jacka$$ Hammer

Typing on the iPhone is somewhat tricky and mistakes happen.

How is the blog career going? I suggest you troll on your own blog loser.

      • Jack Hammer says:

LoL Nick. You need to grow a bit thicker skin…

      • claude balls says:

A new year brings the same Nick.

      • BigP says:

You would think that there is a mix of Niner and Cowboy fans in here with the constant vitriol.

      • Prime Time says:

Nick and Bay, can dish it but cant take it by resorting to name calling. Babies!

    • Nick says:

      Happy new year Claude Balls

  2. Bradlee420 says:

I’d like more screen passes to lamichael James why don’t we ever hand the ball off to a running back and har him throw it back to kaepernick down the field dude takes two steps and he’s 20 yards down the field haha

  3. Niner in Florida says:

I would think since we don’t use them defenses wouldn’t expect it coming

  4. BigP says:

I don’t know if anybody has had a chance to see this kid, but he is unreal. This is from his senior season in High School. Only two years out of High School, he would be the #1 overall pick if only he was eligible this year. They should make a draft exception for kids like this, it’s a shame he has to risk injury next year when he is already dominant. Dude is a straight up athletic super freak.

    • Nick says:

      BigP,

Jadeveon Clowney is a freak of nature. He finished 3rd in the nation in total sacks last year, was a consensus All-American, and won the Ted Hendricks Award.

By the way, have you seen the hit he put on Michigan RB Vincent Smith? Wow, I can’t get tired of watching that play:

      • AES* says:

        Nick,
I agree that Clowney is a beast, but he will likely be a top 5 pick if he comes out.
This year’s draft will be top heavy on defense because there is only a handfull of offensive skill players in the first 32 picks.

The player we may have a shot at is Ezekiel Ansah of BYU. He’s about 6’6″ 270 lbs w/4.6.9 40 yrd. Very productive college career who could make the jump to the bigs without a problem. I see him as a first rd. pick anywhere between a 12-20.

We could trade a few of picks for a shot at Ansah IMO. The teams picking early in the draft need more than one player to become relevant so I think they will listen to possibility of aquiring 3 draft picks for one in the first round.

    • Nick says:

      AES

Good call on Ezekiel Ansah – who is raw, but very athletic. He ran track at BYU and recorded a time of 10.91 in the 100-meter dash. That’s impressive speed. He could develop into a great OLB or DE. But I think he’s somewhat of an unknown commodity at this point.

    • BigP says:

He has been very complimentary of CK since he started playing. Good stuff.

    • Nick says:

Thanks for sharing that link Claude. Do you have access to the full article? I’m curious (outside of the top 3 QBs) how the rest stack up, in particular, where CK7 ranks.

By the way, I see you haven’t lost any of the cutting and pasting skills of past years :)

      • claude balls says:

        @ Nick:

No, I don’t subscribe to the ESPN Insider content.

The cut and paste is a valuable tool for providing information, clarifying who wrote what and organizing lengthy comments. It’s maligned only by those who resent seeing their foolishness highlighted and revisited.

I only regret that I recently have been too lazy to use html for links.

      • rocket says:

        Nick,

He’s got Kap at #14 right after Wilson and just before Romo. Not bad for a guy who didn’t start until Week 11.

      • claude balls says:

I saw a link to the Madden 13 simulations of wildcard games, so I took a quick look:

        http://espn.go.com/espn/playbook/easims13/_/gameId/8809120/madden-13-ea-simulations

        Summary:

        Seattle 24 Washington 23
        Green Bay 31 Minnesota 17
        Houston 27 Cincinnati 17
        Indianapolis 23 Baltimore 17 (OT)

I guess there’s no need to play the games now.

      • Nick says:

        Thanks Rocket,
I agree, #14 is not a bad spot for CK7.
