Brent Jones: “I’m hoping that we get the Packers.”

Brent Jones spoke on KNBR Thursday afternoon about who he hopes the 49ers play in the second round of the playoffs. Here’s what he said.

BRENT JONES: I think we’ll get the Packers and I think we match up pretty darn well against the Packers, unless Aaron Rodgers just goes nuts – and that, obviously, will be determined by how much pressure we can put on him.

The team I’d least like to face is the Seahawks because I think I still have the taste in my mouth from the most recent matchup, even though it was in Seattle.

I’ve seen the Redskins, and there are games that I look and I say, “Gosh, they are so unimpressive,” and there are games where I go, “You know what, they’re alright.” RGIII, I’m pretty impressed with the kid, both on and off the field. Good for him. It’s great for the Redskins to be good, but I’m just not sure we’re going to get them.

It’s strange, but I’m hoping we get the Packers. It’s a known quantity. We have the confidence factor from the earlier win in the season. But it’s not going to be a pushover whoever it is, which sets the tone for a big day at the Stick in a couple of weeks.

I’m hoping we get the Ravens in the Big Bowl, then we make up for T-Giving 2011 with a Big win. But … I’m also picking Indy over the Ravens. Houston over Cincy. Green Bay and Wash winners in the NFC. Kaep vs. RGIII would be fun to see.

Brent as always, brings up some good points. I always appreciate the perspective of those who played the game.

It seems like the lopsided lost to Seattle has left a lasting impression on Brent.
That lost had many factors in it.
    1. Coming off a big game against the Patriots – team was flat.
    2. Playing in Seattle – a notorious graveyard for opposing teams.
    3. Game got out of hand very quickly – not a good perscription for a flat team.
    4. The loss of Justin Smith is proving to be devastating – the big question going forward is his ability to heal quickly.
    5. Seattle was riding the peak of their crest.
    6. Although they won the following week against the Rams, they had a visable letdown.

I certainly don’t believe that we will ever see that type of game from either team if they play again. If we do play Seattle again, the only thing that concerns me is the play of their DB’. Their penchent for holding the WR’ downfield is beginning to be accepted as ‘physical’ play when if fact it’s PI.

I’m very interested to see how the ref’ call the game on Sunday against the Redskins. The Skins WR’ seem a little faster than ours so the Seattle DB’ will be challenge on the edges. If the ref’ let the c-hawks DB’ press/hold the Skins WR’ downfield the hawks have a chance.
If the ref’ don’t allow the hawks to do this, then the Skins win out.

    • Folsom49er says:

Totally agree with your Takes on Seattle.

Would love nothing more than to see them at the Schtick. We’ll see, should be a great game in DC.

    • steelhorse says:

good take on the situation, that said I prefer the lesser of the 2 evils, the skins, but first we need to get by the packers

  3. Razoreater says:

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Having said that, I would love to meet the Seahawks in the Championship game. Thats the listerine required to remove bad taste from said mouth.

    • Ed from AZ says:

Agreed! What better way to knock the overconfidence of the Seahawks then to beat them when it counts?!

      • MWNiner says:

        True, that .. Ed ..
But, on the other hand.. I wouldn’t shed many tears should RG3 knock the SeaChickens out of the dance, either !..

But, I’m thinkin’ we get Aaron at The Stick, then we fly to Atlanta and beat them in their house !

      • Ed from AZ says:

        MWNiner,

Yeah, I see that scenario playing out as well, Vikings will bring good ground game and put up a fight, but the Pack are tough at home.

I can’t really see SEA or WAS beating ATL, but if it happened, hosting another NFC C.G. in SF would not be a bad deal at all.

    • Forever Faithful says:

Call me a sissy, but I think I’m with AES* and Brent. I’d just as soon see the Redskins or the Packers. The psychological factor is critical; the Seahawks are all pumped up right now and they think they’ve got us figured out after that abomination a few weeks ago. Maybe they do for now.
My hope: the Seahawks get beat- embarrassed would be even better- on Sunday, then we play them again next year with a 100% healthy team, a few pressing needs met through the draft, etc.

We’ve got a great tradition of playoff games with the Pack. Maybe we’re ready for “the Catch IV”; Kaep to Crabtree for the winning touchdown.

    • AES* says:

      Razor,
I said right after our big loss to the hawks that I would love to play them again.

The 49ers, well, just weren’t the same 49ers on that Seattle night for many of the reasons I stated in my previous post.
Our team came out completely flat and the score got out of hand before we could find any rhythm.
Once we got down by 3 TD’ it looked to me that our offense went into total vanilla mode.
That will not happen again if we get the chance to play them again.

    • Madman49ers says:

“Thats the listerine required to remove bad taste from said mouth.”

Meh. A SB win without having to play the Seahawks would do just fine for that.

      • Razoreater says:

You’re right, but like Brent, I too have a bad aftertaste lingering from that game. Winning a SuperBowl would indeed remove it, but then here come the “You’re lucky you did not have to face the Seahawks” blah blah blah….let’s exact revenge, shut them up and win the SuperBowl!

      • Crab15 says:

Razor- Good post, I’d hate to hear that crap too but nobody remembers that stuff 6 months later. They remember Super Bowl winners.
        Niners don’t lose Super Bowls!

    • Folsom49er says:

If the Seahawks happen to make it back to the Bay than so be it. You have to play the Best to be the Best.

  4. AngusinCanada says:

I’d like home games against washington, then Minnesota, but I’m expecting home games against GB, then Seattle. Yep, Seattle.

  5. Larry says:

I AM HOPPING FOR MINNISOTA TO BEAT GREEN BAY. SEATTLE TO BEAT REDSKINS. SEATTLE THEN WILL COME TO OUR HOUSE AND I AM SURE WE WILL END UP IN ATLANTA. BUT I THINK REDSKINS WIN THIS GAME BY 10 POINTS.

    • MWNiner says:

      Larry, Larry, Larry ..
You really gotta get that caps-lock key fixed !
Yeah.. I know they can be annoying when they stick … huh ?

But .. I’m still pullin’ for RG3 to win this one

      • Larry says:

Sorry just a little over hyped. Just thinking before I type. This weekend is going to be a slug fest. Hard tough battles about to be fought.

        God Bless

  6. BOS9er says:

Im with Brent. We match up better vs pass first teams that go 4 wide and dont have a punishing D. We beat 4 out of 5 “top” qb’s that we faced this year the only loss coming to NYG and EM didnt exactly light us up in that game. As for the Hawks they have to prove that they can win away from home and no beating the bills in canada doesnt count that was a semi road game for both teams.
If anyone cares for history in 2010 the Jets came to Gilette in december and got smoked 45-3 in a game where not much went right for NYJ. then a month later they came back to NE in the playoffs and took the pats out. I know different year different team but it just goes to show that the playoffs are trully a different season

  7. Neal says:

I don’t care who we play, I just want to win it all and if we do fall short, don’t want Bellicheat and crybaby Brady win it, and also Cheating Pete and the Seaturds to win it

  8. bdubbs23 says:

Best case scenario we play Green Bay and Rogers gets dinged up in the game. Then Washington beats Seattle and wins at Atlanta. Then we get Skins at home for a classic NFC champ game with RG3 vs Kaepernick. Then we play Denver in Superbowl and get revenge on Peyton for not signing with us. Overall it was a blessing Manning chose Denver because we would of never found our Qb of the future. A win for both Peyton and the Niners.

    • Ed from AZ says:

I do agree with what you said about Kap, he would definitely have been buried on the depth chart behind #18, and Harbaugh wouldn’t have had the chance to pass off the “hot-hand” argument as smoothly.

    • Razoreater says:

Boy, talk about your stars aligning on a full moon dawn….

    • Fansince 77 says:

It’s all about match-ups and Seattle is a horrible matchup for the current Niners of 2012.
I would love to beat-up on Peyton Manning, but I’m not on board with the CK train. I don’t hate him and I want him to do well. But it’s way too soon to say he is the QB of the future. He’s the future because we have Harbaugh. CK has talent and seems coachable, but he’s made some bad mistakes, some great throws but also some really bonehead bad throws.

He’s young, I hope he evolves. But I also think the offense still has holes in playcalling and WR, and to think we have a dynamic QB that can overcome bad schemes is not good coaching.

      • 23Jordan says:

        Fan,

Please tell me about Kaps bonehead throws. Your bias is showing through. Kap has 3 picks. I consider a bonehead throw to be one that seriously cost you a chqnce to win a game. I consider the throws that we saw Tony Romo make in week 17 against the skins to be bonehead throws. Come on man. We know you like Alex but your comment has no weight.

      • Fansince 77 says:

I prefer Peyton Manning. I wished we made that deal, I was willing to risk that gimpy neck.
I prefer Alex for 2012 as I don’t think the team is built for a dynamic offense for a good stretch run.
I do prefer CK for 2013. Alex can pack his bags for next year.

But for bonehead throws — there’s the pick in the NO game after the fumbled snap. There’s a would be pick where Moss tackled the dude to prevent an INT in the NO game. There’s the pick the threw in NE straight into double coverage.

There’s two passes that were drops in the AZ game, where it was a lucky bounce that prevented a INT. And there was another almost INT where Moss had to break up the pass in that game.

This is not to say Alex wouldn’t have made mistakes either or doesn’t make bad throws.

Everyone who hates Alex piles on him, while CK gets all the slack. Sure Alex had 8 years and CK have 6 games. That’s the point — anyone can see it’s a high risk move at by Harbaugh to put CK in when he did.

There’s also all those fumbles and the bad pitch and not sliding out of bounds.

To Bay’s point – there’s no turning back. It is what it is. I’m just not drinking the CK kool-aid and the hot hand crap.

That’s not to hate on him or say I told ya so if he messes up. It’s just an observation and an opinion.

To CK’s credit – there are also a lot of great throws in tight windows that Alex would not have thrown.

Let’s say the Niners don’t make it to the SB, and
Let’s say he has the same game he had in the Seattle game against Seattle in the title game, where the offense looks lethargic and out of synch, would you be okay with his performance? And this has nothing to do with how the D plays that game, but how he does?

    • Larry says:

Peyton could of never taken the punishment of the NFC West. All West teams come locked and loaded every week. It does not matter who you play Arizona, SF, Seattle, Rams. You are in for a beating. The worst part is you might even win.

      God Bless

  9. Tha Grinch says:

I have this wierd feeling its gonna be SF vs Seattle at the stick and another tight win..

  10. bayareafanatic says:

Did you guys see that Gore and Crabs got fined $5K each for throwing balls in the stands.
And Gore actually threw his record breaking TD ball into the stands. The NFL is ridiculous. Way to take the fun out of the game. They are calling it a safety issue. Safety my ass. In baseball line drives go into the stands all the time. These guys floated throws into the stands.

  11. Hoferfan67 says:

Interesting article on NFL.com ranking the playoff QBs by GBrandt. CK is ranked 11th out of 12. I’d rank him about 8th or 9th based on experience and his ability to move in the pocket.

Once in, it’s anyone’s game. Rollin’ with the flow…

    • AES* says:

      Nice report by Brandt.
      By just another man’s opinion.
Ron Jaworski has made some very positive comments regarding CK, and Jaws is a former QB.
Except for the usual suspects of Rodgers, Brady, and Manning it’s almost a crapshoot.

We don’t know which QB you get with Flacco. Will Flacco be lights-out or woeful?
Is M.Ryan ready to take his game to the next level?
Are the young-guns ready for the big stage?
We will have a better idea after the next few weeks.

    • bayareafanatic says:

I have no problem with that ranking. Respect needs to be earned. He hasn’t even completed a full season.

    • Bas72 says:

I heard Gil Brandt on satellite radio yesterday saying he probably rated CK too low based on his high risk, high reward style of play.

    • undercenter says:

ESPN has Ck ranked 3rd and Alex 7th in QBR for what its worth.

      • Bas72 says:

Interesting. I thought the QBR rating was supposed to be a fairly accurate ranking of NFL QBs. If so, I wouldn’t have expected CK to have that high a rating. Or was that just the opinion of the ESPN staff? I like CK and wanted the Niners to draft him but after only 7 starts, I wouldn’t expect that he would be anywhere near a “finished” product. Personally, I’d rate him in the middle of the pack of the playoff QBs, right now.

  12. Jack Hammer says:

    Playoff Prediction:

Packers and Redskins will win this weekend.

49ers will then beat GB, Redskins beat Falcons

49ers vs Patriots in the Super Bowl.

    • rocket says:

That’s how I see the SB too Jack, but I think the 9ers have to go to Atlanta to get there.

      AES,

Denver looks great right now, but Belichick has always made life difficult for Manning when he was with the Colts. I think the Pats win a high scoring game in Denver in the AFCCG.

      • AES* says:

Agreed Rocket. But the one time that PM beat the Patriots was when the Colts put together a great defense that helped carry them to a SB win.

The current Broncos remind me of that Colts team with a great assembly of defensive players.
The Denver team has been somewhat under the radar over the last month although they have been on a roll. Teams will find it tough playing them at Mile High this time of the year.
Just ask the favored Steelers of last year’s playoff game (lol).

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I don’t like to predict that far ahead (superstitious) but SEA and DEN have been coming on strong. Of course I’m not a fan of either especially SEA, but they have been hot. BTW, over 15 predictions at NFL.com, only one has the 9ers in the SB losing to DEN.

  13. AES* says:

    Hammer,
Obviously, I like the 49ers in the big show, but my AFC frontrunner is the Broncos with my darkhorse being the Texans.
I just see the Texans coming out of their current funk and making some serious noise, but the Broncos will be tough to beat in Mile High Stadium.

    • Sean says:

While I like Manning I dont think the Broncos are as good as people are making them out to be. Ten of their wins came against losing teams. Six of those ten came against the AFC west. They lost to Falcons,Patriots, and Texans.

I think they will be one and done when they face the Pats.

  14. Sean says:

    Redskins will beat the Seahawks
    Greenbay will beat Vikings
    Bengals will beat Houston
    Colts will beat Ravens

  15. bayareafanatic says:

    Reid is a Chief….

    • Nick says:

      Bay
This increases the odds – in my opinion – of Alex Smith ending up in KC. What do you think?

      • rocket says:

        Nick,

I’m not so sure. I’d lean more towards Reid bringing Vick in or signing Kolb after the Cardinals dump him. It’s also been speculated he could bring McNabb in to serve as a backup. When you look at it, he could easily set up the same QB depth chart he had in Philly 3 years ago.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Don’t think so. I think he chose KC because he thinks he can work with Cassel. Remember they still owe Cassel like 60Million.

  16. undercenter says:

    Hawks beat Skins
    Pack beat Vikes
    Bengals beat Texans
    Colts beat Ravens

    • Bas72 says:

That’s how I see it, too. I’d still like to see the Skins beat the Hawks.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, good call. I agree with all but the Bengals win. I’m not so sure about that one. I see it as the Houston defense keeping the score low and winning 16-13.

  17. MWNiner says:

Chris Berman just predicted a ..
“Super Bowl family event” .. for the Super Bowl ..

    Ravens vs Niners ..

    u-hhh.. ya know FWIW

  18. Brodie2Washington says:

I’m hoping Seattle/Washington/Green Bay has to win a grueling, triple OT to get here. Not rooting for injuries… just nice, tired legs trying to run on soggy the Candlestick turf. As Randy Cross said about Anthony Dorsett before the 81 NCF championship game… “get him on the swamp!”

The Niner game is on a Saturday. If it’s Seattle or Washington, they play at The Stick on a six day week. I’m tempted to want that over facing Rogers on a full weeks preparation.

I think Seattle can beat Atalanta. Better to get them on a 6 day week (vs our 13 day week) then the NFC championship game.
