Crabtree: “I’ve got a chip on my shoulder right now.”

SANTA CLARA – Michael Crabtree spoke at his locker Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: You struggled in the NFC Championship game last season. It seems like you’ve really blossomed this season. What do you attribute that to?

CRABTREE: It was last year. I don’t really know what happened. We talked about opportunities, I said something about that after the game last year, and I meant it. I’m a football player. This is what I do for a living. I love it. This year is different. I feel like all we have to do is go out there and do our jobs. We should be alright.

Q: Do you feel like this quarterback really looks for you?

CRABTREE: I wouldn’t put it like that. We’re making a lot of plays on Sundays. That’s just been the regular season. Last year we came up short. I’ve got a chip on my shoulder right now. I just can’t wait to get back out there. Big stage. Big game for us. I feel like we should do better than before.

Q: Do you feel more comfortable this time around?

CRABTREE: I wouldn’t say comfortable. I’d say anxious, ready to get out there and really play. I really don’t like talking about it.

Q: You talked about coming up short last year. How much did that drive you and your teammates in the offseason to get back to this point?

CRABTREE: It drove us a lot. I want to win. I want to go to the Super Bowl. I want to do all those things. You’ve got to take it one game at a time. Green Bay is in front of us right now. We’ve got to take care of our business.

Q: Did Randy Moss talk to the team about his playoff experience?

CRABTREE: Randy talks to us all the time. All day every day. We just need to go out there and do our jobs.

Crab better be motivated and bring it on Sunday. I’ll admit, I haven’t been as excited to watch him play as much as this year. He’s looking like the guy from Texas Tech who can take a comeback, short slant, or screen to the house on each play.

    Go Niners!

    • BennyBlanco says:

He looks way more explosive and strong!!! I’ll be there Sat and I can’t wait either!!!

      • Ed from AZ says:

Man you’re lucky. Still haven’t gone to a Niner game in CA, saw them in Phoenix last year, great game even though they lost by 2.

Would like to see one game before the ‘Stick closes, gotta save some $ 1st. Where are your seats?

  2. six-ace-deuce says:

Crabtree had 4 or 5 drops in the Saints’ divisional playoff game, and then failed to get off the jam against the giants in the NFC Championship game. Crabtree had his opportunities last season, he didn’t capitalize.. I hope he’s ready this year.. we need him!

    • bayareafanatic says:

He had three drops and he also had a TD. Against the Giants he never got a chance because he’s QB wouldn’t sit in the pocket long enough to deliver the ball to his WR’s.
Crabs is a beast and he is flourishing with CK. Looks like a legit number one right now. And I give him props for not being baited into talking poorly about his previous QB.

    • Crab15 says:

Grant – Do you recognize this deuce bag persons IP computer or cell address? DS has no friends so maybe DS got a library card and is using one of their computers.
Crabtree has been one of Niners best players this year and that has hurt some feelings.

  3. michael says:

I hope all 46 players have a chip on there shoulder.

  4. bayareafanatic says:

Whos’ going to the game? We should have a Press Democrat gathering at the Gridiron Grill. Pregame victory toast at the build your own bloody mary bar.

  5. Neal says:

Crab got great hands and one of the best YAC in Football. I always knew he was going to be good, and I am glad that he is healthy. Loved how he played at Texas A&M

    • FDM says:

      Try Texas Tech Neal.

    • Crab15 says:

Neal (real deal) – I got a feeling P Willy is going to score somehow Saturday night. Maybe pick off a screen pass? He’s due for a huge play. Don’t worry about a hot Packers team Neal.
Get your mojo back bro! Niners love playing under the lights! Packers are not what they used to be since they beat Steelers in
      Super Bowl 2 years ago.

      • Chicago49er says:

as long as grant does not make any prediction about us we should be fine! just kidding Grant.

  6. Alex Smith for President says:

Question for Coach Harbaw: Does having a chip on my shoulder = overhyped because if so… you better find a way to help Mr. Crabtree dial it down a bit. Of course that would mean that you knew how to ratchet down your own self. Big stage, big game, …. too big for this year, maybe.

  7. Big Suede says:

I give Crabtree a lot of credit- the reporters were BEGGING for Crab to dis Alex Smith- or say Kap has better accuracy. But Crab never took the bait- in fact he went out of his way to avoid that.

Crabtree is a good kid, and i totally understand why he is always so unwilling to talk to these reporters who want so desperately to twist his words.

    • Crab15 says:

      Suede – Exactly, good post.

    • Chicago49er says:

right on! Crab was always misunderstood by the media and the fans. I am very proud of him and hope he is going to have a great playoff season. GO CRAB and the NINERS

  8. Razoreater says:

    Mr. Crabs has meaty claws.

  9. guy fawkes says:

sf will need jerry rice back to win this game.watch!!!

  10. Brodie2Washington says:

I’m guessing the Crustacean Sensations increased RAC is partly that the Turlock Tornado gets the ball to him a fraction sooner. This gives Mr. Crabs a little more time to juke the defender and turn upfield.

  11. Crab15 says:

Grimey – Thanks, that’s a great article on Kap!

    • Grimey9er says:

It really is. Funny I had to go to the Milwaukee JS to find it. Also funny how select 9er fans refuse to be excited about Kap. What we’ve seen so far is only his floor.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Grimey:

Thanks for the link. That was an enjoyable read.

I have noticed that sometimes the most positive articles about a player are written by sportswriters from another city. Grant’s Keyser Soze article is another example. I don’t know if it’s an attempt to be even-handed (“see, I am not a homer”), a counterbalance to fans’ tendency to overrate their team’s players and underrate opposing players, the flipside of the maxim “familiarity breeds contempt” or something else. Of course, these two articles share the common theme of local boys who left town and made it big playing for the upcoming opponent, and maybe that’s all they are.

In any case, thanks again for the link.

      • Grimey9er says:

“honeyed words of praise” to soften the opposition.
