Grant a totally unsolicitated piece of advice. Do’nt agree with your Dad verbatim. Show that you are your own man with your own opinions. I believe it will earn you respect in the sports media community and it could make for some really compelling televison. I will be watching. Break a leg!!!!

    • Grant Cohn says:

Thanks, old coach. I’ll take it to him.

      • I.P. Daily says:

Is that what you mean by “he’s going down?” I am a huge fan of your Pops. He’s often wrong, can be vindictive but he’s the best sports writer on the planet. You not so much…

      • Grant Cohn says:

Thanks, I’m a huge fan of my dad, too. I agree, he is the best sports writer on the planet. I’ve been lucky to learn from the best.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Congrats Grant! Hope you don’t start big timing us now.

  3. DClark says:

Dammit, would have loved to see that!, the downside of being stuck in England i guess, unless of course there’s t’internet method of watching?? is there?

  4. Adam says:

Way to go, Grant. Take it to him! :P

  5. jsand3030 says:

Good luck Grant! Dont say anything stupid! ;)

  6. bayareafanatic says:

Good luck. You won’t need it. You carry with you the wisdom that we bloggers have infused in you. You carry the “force” young man.
By the way, what ever happened to the first picture you posted of yourself on this blog? Man that was a terrible picture. Did you burn it?

  7. Coffee's for closers says:

I’m not familiar with the show but I will check it out. Why do you say your Dad is going down? Is it a debate show?

  8. Spaceborn says:

Grant, good to see you climbing the ladder of success! I see that Peter King is also going to be on the show – can you do us followers a favor and “accidently” step on his big toe for picking the Packers? LOL

  9. Elvis says:

If you are half as bad on TV as you are at writing, this will be appointment television! Like slowing down for a multi-car pile up!

  10. Chewie says:

Its always fun to make fun of your dad’s age in front of other people. Just sayin’ if things get slow….. “Back in your day they wore leather helmets….”

  11. ribico says:

Is this a Bay Area broadcast only? Any streams available for your world-wide fanbase, Grant?

  12. Crab15 says:

Grant – Congrats!…I’ll be watchin from So-Cal. Have 9erGirl fix your hair and use that lint roller on you. :) Give a shout out to the blog if possible.

  13. Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, congrats! I’ve been pushing for you to be on Chron live a long time and have even mentioned it to LC on his blog. You give me no props? LOL
BTW, I even remember you being on KRON with GRad for his 15 minute Sunday show and we discussed it!

  14. Hacksaw46 says:

    Grant,

I’m a contemporary of your Dad and have enjoyed his take on the world, by the way he is the best sports writer on the planet. As they say, the apple does not fall far from the tree…

  15. Neal says:

    Grant,

Good luck, will try to make it home by 5pm, (( Go Sharks )) Talk about hockey, your old man knows squat.

  16. Big niner says:

Please post a link for those that can’t see it.

  17. Jack Hammer says:

    HaHa…Grant is rocking it!

    • Grant Cohn says:

You’re too kind, Jack. I’ll be in one more segment toward the end of the show.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Your dad is right, you are all wet! LoL…wish I could say you are way off base with that prediction, but I can easily see that happening.

      • rocket says:

Good showing Grant. I didn’t agree with everything you said, but you didn’t look out of place. Is this going to be a regular gig for you? Congrats either way.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Thanks, Rocket.

  18. Neal says:

    Grant,

Good job, your going to be a rock star!! I rarely watch this show but made sure I left work early to see you and Lowell.

  19. I.P. Daily says:

Don’t show the bottom of your shoes to the audience, period. Sit up, this isn’t History class. Don’t just blurt something out. Give the reasoning why you are about to make an opinion and then make it. Don’t figit or look around the studio. Don’t stare off to some point near the camera; look at the others on stage.

Be engaging — that is what the media is 101 percent about. If you want to be successful, engage the others onstage and then the audience. I did this for years. It was real scary at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s a piece of cake. You get a C- for this show cause you were too smirky and didn’t deliver well reasoned answers. Moss isn’t “a shell of his former self.” Moss has slowed down more than a few steps. He cannot be relied on in the clutch although he is still a force to be reckoned with. Yadda yadda. Your father was great. A-……

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I’d give him a B. He was edgy and different than MM and LC. I don’t want to see clones of talking heads across the board. GC balanced out the panel. Why so critical? Yes, at times he could have expanded his thought but he didn’t get a brain lock. He didn’t freeze. He will get better each and every time. I would have given LC an A until he told GC he was all wet. Now he gets a B+. LOL

      • I.P. Daily says:

        No B for GC.

There was no connection with the audience. His answers were no different than those from the fat guy at the end of the bar who one minute tells you he has a friend in New York who knows 9-11 was an inside job and the next minute tells you why arch supports are the most important thing for good health.

Mat M is the total pro. He is over the horizon from Grant because he can frame his opinions in clear language and lucid thought. More, no most, importantly he is engaging, not some kid slouching around in his chair looking at the ceiling when it wasn’t his turn to talk. That was live Grant. People are watching you whether you are on mic or not.

I’ve watched Grant cream players with his opinions, regardless if he knew what he was talking about. Okay, it was his turn on show-and-tell and I was being generous in my grading. So now, Grant, let’s see you step up to the plate and be a professional. For now, you got a ways to go…

      • Crab15 says:

I.P. – You’re a jerk dude. Grant did a very good job for first time on Chron Live.
Skip Bayless figits, is always is looking around and peeks at his notes all the time on First Take. Bayless is big time and he is not polished.
Grant was being himself (which is good) and he looked very comfortable to me.
I.P., it appears you were just looking for faults rather than enjoying the show like I did.
Some of these new/young sports journalist you see on TV have to cite fake sources or just made things up in order to gain a following. They say outrageous things just for the shock value, to get noticed.
Grant doesn’t need to do that. He has plenty of talent and will be more and more successful in the future.

What you wrote sounds like sour grapes to me. Do you have an axe to grind with Grant? Were you banned from this blog at some point under a different screen name perhaps?

By the way, you said I did this for years referring to TV work. Please tell us. Reveal your true identity so that we can assess your credibility.

I tend to agree with your points on Grant’s ‘stage presence’. He would do well to consider those tips for future appearances. Lowell was calmer. TV is a visual medium, so a player has to work the medium.
Whatever points Grant made stand on their own merit. ‘Shell of former self’ is a characteristic hyper criticism that Grant throws out there in a fairly widely used style. I thought Grant came across as a bit snarky on his ‘Aldon won’t be effective’ theme. A more circumspect approach might have been ‘…with Justin playing hurt well have to see how effective Aldon can be…’. Does anybody think those lines won’t get back to those guys? Sooooooo, does anybody think Grant will get deep, revealing, in-depth interviews with Aldon? Anthony Davis? CK? Crabs?
A curious approach for someone who wants to be in the business long term.

    • Neal says:

      IP,

Your always so serious and critical. have a ongoing chip on your shoulder, how good were you when you were 23 years old?

      • Nick says:

        Neal

The guy sounds like a bitter old man. He might soon change his name to I.P.my.pants.Daily :)

      • Neal says:

        Nick,

He sounds depressed and always unhappy, his life probably sucks and as the saying goes ‘misery loves company’.
Anyway I am so tired of waiting for this game, 12 hours from now we will be quite happy. I hope.

      • Neal says:

        lol Nick,

        That was funny.

      • Nick says:

        Neal

I can’t wait for the game. In the mean time, I’m trying to figure out whether to make some steak, order pizza, or make some of Hofer’s pollo chicken :)

      • Neal says:

You can’t go wrong on the steak or the pizza, didnot know that Hofer was a chef. :)

  20. TIM says:

The best thing about Grant on that program is that I believe he predicted the Pack will win the game ! Now I can rest easy knowing the Niners will win easily ! ;)

  21. NinerNation says:

Congrats Grant, I thought you did well last night. You seemed a little nervous at first but settled in nicely later on.

Since Dan Dibley beat your Dad on the Chronicle Blitz show to end the year in December maybe we can see a Grant Cohn vs Dan Dibley on the panel in the future. :)
