Harbaugh names Akers the starting kicker

SANTA CLARA – After a two-week-long kicker competition, im Harbaugh named David Akers the starting kicker on Thursday. Here’s everything Harbaugh said.

Q: Who’s going to be your kicker Saturday?

HARBAUGH: David Akers.

Q: Why is that?

HARBAUGH: I feel like he gives us the best chance.

Q: What did you see from him the last week of practices?

HARBAUGH: Suffice it to say we feel confident in David giving us the best chance to week.

Q: How do you feel about how he responded to the competition?

HARBAUGH: Good. Responded like a football player does. Competed and not anything more to say about it.

Q: Will you keep Billy Cundiff on the team?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: Why is that?

HARBAUGH: Our decision. Again, what we think is best for us.

Q: Will he be active on Saturday, or is that to be determined?

HARBAUGH: To be determined.

Q: If at some point in the playoffs you had to turn to Billy Cundiff, how much confidence do you have in him?

HARBAUGH: I’m not going to go into any kind of speculation. He’s done a nice job. David’s done a better job. He gives us the best chance to win. I can’t possibly think of anything more to say about this.

Q: Did Akers’ playoff experience factor into your decision?

HARBAUGH: Can’t possibly….I feel like we have plowed that ground as thoroughly as it can possibly be plowed.

    Grant,

I love it when JH says “We plowed the field” It just makes me laugh. I do see allot of Bill Belicheck in him. I remember when all the sports writers use to hate him too and now he is a God.

So what is your perdiction on the Game?

  2. Grimey9er says:

“So Jim now that we’ve plowed the ground what kind of seeds should we plant here?”

  3. wokingfool says:

Let’s hope the game is not decided by the left leg of Akers.

  4. Neal says:

He didn’t have a lot to choose from, funny with Jim, he loves to set everything up to drama and then when he hits that mark, he cools it down.

  5. Razoreater says:

Harbaugh is in Akers brain, hanging from the cobwebs looking for his confidence. If he misses a kick…I fear for his safety.

He is setting Akers up for failure. I hope he brings two kickers still. If Akers kicks at home and misses one, the crowd will turn on him. That could have a negative effect not just on the kicker but on the team….

  6. Rav4 says:

He can use Cundiff for kickoffs and save Akers for short to medium field goals. Anything over 40 yards, go for it on 4th down

  7. Matt says:

What concerns me with this organization is that they brought in Cundiff to compete against Akers, but the Seahawks brought in Longwell a week after. In my opinion, I think Longwell is leaps and bounds ahead of Cundiff and am disappointed and surprised that SF didn’t go after a bigger name kicker.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Not bringing Longwell in tells us he didn’t want a proven winner. This was all one big Jedi mind trick to get Akers back on track… Big mistake IMO.
They should have brought in Longwell and rolled with him.

  8. Adam says:

Seems like more buffoonery to me. What, Akers has the hot foot?

Cundiff was unemployed for a reason. I’d have felt better if Joe Nedney was still in shape and they brought him back in for a bit.

If Akers is healed up from the double hernia operation and whatever was going on with the hip then he’s gold, nobody better. But if he’s still hurting? They should have done something about this a few months ago.

I generally think Harbaugh and gang do a pretty good job. But… there are times like with the Smith/CK debacle (how it was handled), how we haven’t learned anything from last season with regard to receiver depth, some questionable down-and-distance play calling, and now this – I sometimes wonder how Harbs gets up and ties his shoes in the morning.

And these press conferences? What a joke. His demeanor will eventually be his downfall. Kind of disappointing to me, there were three or four of us on here screaming for Jed to hire Harbaugh a few years ago. Others wanted Mularkey, Morninwheg, etc., but this was THE best guy out there, bar none. But damn… his attitude in public just sucks.

Jim, why did you choose Akers?

Well uh, David has the ‘hot foot’!
