Harbaugh wants Randy Moss to re-sign with the 49ers: “I hope he feels the same way.”

SANTA CLARA – Jim Harbaugh spoke in the media tent Friday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Randy Moss, who will be a free agent after this season.

Q: How has Randy Moss handled his increased playing time since Mario Manningham got injured?

HARBAUGH: Good. He’s been good.

Q: He’s nearing the end of his one-year contact. Will you approach him and ask if he wants to come back next year?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: You want him back?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: Has that conversation taken place?

HARBAUGH: No it has not, but for official publication, I, for one, definitely want Randy to come back. I hope he feels the same way.

When Moss was asked in the locker room if he wanted to re-sign with the 49ers, he said, “We’ll know once the season’s over.”

The Harbaugh translation machine says: “Well, hopefully we win the Super Bowl and he decides to ride off into the sunset. We can then acquire a dynamic talent in the draft.”

    • Prime Time says:

Or sign Dwayne Bowe in free agency. This guy would compliment Crabtree perfectly!

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Baalke has shown to be more Ted Thompson rather then Jerry Jones when it comes to free agents. If Bowe hits the market I just have to imagine he’s going to price himself out of what Baalke would be willing to pay. I’m also not seeing Bowe as a guy who will take a discount to sign with a contender.

      • Prime Time says:

CC we have not had a bonafide receiving core for a long time. Bowe is an immediate impact player. We need someone opposite Crabtree to come in and play at a high level. I am all about developing and the draft, but Bowe to me is instant back to back tittles. The Niners will have Alex’s money to spend.

      • Grimey9er says:

Gotta re-sign 49ers before giving outsiders more money. Alex’s money should go to DG so he can afford all those fines he’s gonna rack up. AJJ will be stronger next year and KW will be ready for training camp.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

It has nothing to do about his abilities or what he’d contribute to the team. Baalke doesn’t break the bank for free agents and Bowe if he is in fact available is the type of guy that will get signed within the first 48 hours of free agency.

The real question is, do you honestly think Reid will let him become a free agent?

      • Grimey9er says:

Bowe is probably excited to play for Reid.

      • old coach says:

Coffee you have Baalke pegged pretty damn well. He will not break the bank on a FA. He sits back and waits for the feeding frenzy to end and picks up the good deals that are left. From what i’m reading there will be almost no cap expansion over the next 3 yrs and if the niners sign any big time FA’s i believe it will be a 3-4 de\dt they need to have someone in place to replace J. Smith eventually

      • Prime Time says:

KC is in transition and possibly a rebuild. So Bowe might want to come play for a contender and with a great coach and a talent like Kaepernick.

    • Neal says:

He said the same thing about Josh Morgan, I can’t see the Niners paying Moss 3 or 4 million a year, which is what he would want at a minimum, he is looking for his last big contract. He does not make much now. I would like a big time receiver from draft or free agency and make Manningham a third option.

  2. MontanaMan16 says:

That would be great to resign Moss. Like having a coach on the field. Another Wiley vet with a positive influence in the locker room!

  3. Domingo says:

On a depleted WE/TE corp that consistents of just Crabtree, Moss, Davis and Walker it would be nice to see Moss step up with a six or seven reception game. We need it from him. Atlanta is gonna throw the house at Crabtree.

  4. Adam says:

The other side of Harbaugh’s face says:

“I want to thank Randy for his service to this team and wish him good fortune in the future.”

  5. Neal says:

We are built for the draft or free agents at a bargain.

  6. old coach says:

I have been saying for quite a while that AJ. Jenkins will be the next John Taylor next year. I do’nt see the 9ers spending cap space or a high draft pick on a WR this off season after drafting Jenkins in the 1st rd last draft.

  7. fesnyc says:

good stuff. and maybe we’re due for a couple of big games from Randy as we get to crunch time.

  8. old coach says:

George After they drafted him i looked at alot of his college film. He blew me away with his hands his speed his ability to run the underneath routes along with his ability to get deep. All while playing for one of the worst passing offenses in college football. Then he had a slow start at camp but by the end of the exhibition season i felt he was showing flashes of greatness. WR is one of the most difficult positions to transition from in the nfl. Lastly his skill set and physical build just remind me of JT

    • George says:

I loved John Taylor. His career was a lot shorter than Rice’s, but when they played together, I thought he was just as good. Plus he was a great punt returner. Maybe this is heresy, but so be it.

  9. 49er42 says:

    Old Coach:
Thanks for the insight. You are correct a lot of college wide receivers have a tough time adjusting to the complexity of the position in the NFL.However; I would like to see AJJ have a couple of catches on Sunday.
The Niners will sign their free agents before signing someone from another team, unless their is someone like Justin Smith available, which doesn’t happen very often.

  10. AES* says:

As much as I like RM on the team, he has not provided the big impact I expected from him when he signed on.

There are numerous postitives that come with winning a SB, and I would hope that winning the SB would be RMoss’ going out party.
This is the only prize that has eluded Moss throughout his illustrious career.

Realistically, if we are going to compete against the C-hawks big DB’ in the future, we need to find another bigger and more physical WR on the edge to compliment M.Crabtree. Keeping RM around for another season would impede that possibility IMO.
