How will Mike Nolan game plan against the 49ers offense?

On KNBR Tuesday afternoon, Trent Dilfer said Mike Nolan likes to take away an offense’s fast ball.

What do you think Nolan will consider the 49ers’ fast ball?

Do you think he’ll double team Vernon Davis or Michael Crabtree?

Do you think Nolan will load the box with eight defenders, or do you think he’ll play a two-deep zone and attempt to stop Frank Gore with seven defenders?

I’m curious to read what you have to say.

Dirk Koetter, Falcons offensive coordinator, explains his philosophy and how he game plans: http://xandolabs.com/2011/07/dirk-koetter-exclusive-interview/

  2. Grant Cohn says:

The Falcons defense gave up 18.2 points per game at home this season, 7th-best in the NFL.

    • big niner says:

against bad teams….Our schedule was the hardest.

      • bayareafanatic says:

That was with a healthy Abraham… Our numbers declined defensively once we lost our stud on the D line.
Without Abraham the Falcons will have to solely rely on scheme…..

    • wokingfool says:

The only three or four legit teams that the Falcons beat are the Cowboys, Broncos(in week 2), New Orleans, and Redskins. They beat Giants in Week 15, but the Giants were in a tailspin by the end of the season.
They played a much softer schedule than niners(raiders, chiefs, cardinals, eagles, chargers, buccaneers, …)

    • wokingfool says:

The Falcons are ranked lower than the Packers in total defense, passing defense, and rushing defense in the regular season. The packers D is ranked around 10-14, while the Falcons are ranked 20-24. This game will not be close.

  3. kk says:

Nolan is a fraud… he used to blame the players for not executing even when his game plans were faulty… he has the ATL def in the bottom 3rd of the league..not sure where the head coaching interest is coming from…

Seattle eviscerated his plan in the 2nd half and his comment is “I didn’t throw anything. But it was bad. What’s going through your mind is, we’re going the same things in the second half that we did in the first, but now we’re breaking down. Why? We’re making mistakes. Why? It was difficult to watch.”

    Again blaming his players…

  4. Mr. Everything says:

I still think they try to take away Frank Gore mostly, and the deep shot to Vernon. They’ll put a spy on Kaep and try to eliminate Crabs YAC.

    • Nick says:

They can’t do all of that simultaneously. They’ll be susceptible and the Niner coaching staff needs to take advantage of that and they will.

    • big niner says:

I haven’t seen any fly sweeps where they hand the ball to the motioning WR, maybe jenkins? with his speed?

  5. Houston 9er says:

Mike Nolan is nothing if not predictable. Nolan will attempt to take away Gore and he will try to double team Crabtree at all times. The Falcons were so afraid of Russell Wilson running they dropped their LB’s into coverage while always facing Wilson which caused them to lose track of receivers behind them in the intermediate to deep levels. If they do that against the 9ers, Walker and Davis could have huge games running free through the secondary. If they don’t use the same strategy then CK will have a huge day running. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Moss have a big day and we will even see a few catches at the intermediate level from AJ Jenkins. IMHO, the 9ers offense matches up very favorably with the Falcons defense.

    • claude balls says:

I would not be surprised if Randy Moss is the ace that Greg Roman has under his leg for this game.

      • T says:

What if Jenkins is the ace? Keeping him on the slide lines and unleashing him in the playoffs. It’s almost too perfect.

    • Pete says:

Walker and Davis have to catch the ball to have big games.

      • big niner says:

they should from the looks of it. Miller got some many looks last game. I think our TE’s will get plenty of looks.

  6. CG says:

    Grant,

Next time you get a chance to ask JH some questions, can you ask him whether or not he is concerned about Dashon Goldson being suspended for the personal foul penalties he has accrued over the past few games.

There were a couple plays where Goldson could have been called for a personal fouls, but he didn’t get caught. It went both ways between both teams, but Goldson already has that jacket.

    Thanks…

  7. Foamingatdamouth says:

All this talk of scheme is irrelevant. The Niners Oline is filled with 6’4 320 lb athletic bruisers, while The Falcons Dline doesn’t have anyone over 295 lbs. Goodluck with that.

I admired how the Falcons contained Lynch by bringing up an extra man, but the Niners run game is too diverse & has a dangerous change of pace back in James to compliment Gore. Nolan can scheme all he wants, but the talent difference between the two rosters will decide the outcome.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Exactly! They will definitely have an 8th man in and they will be so focused on stopping the run and containing Kap that we’ll just come out firing. We’ll stretch the field with Moss and VD, Crabs will do what he does. We’ll survive their 1st qtr fury and by the 2nd half, we will do what ever we want. It’s gonna get ugly!

  8. big niner says:

They will not stop us!! period!!! I want us to draft a big bruising center to complete the Armada of an offensive line.

  9. Hov says:

Hey grant, why you block Ruthless guy on twitter???

  10. MontanaMan16 says:

Atlanta fans are using the 9er/Seahawk game a few weeks ago as to why they’ll beat us! Since they beat the hawks, now they can beat us! lol

  11. Josh says:

Nolan will watch Rams-49ers game tape and copy it. I think this game comes down to how our defense performs on the road against the Falcons offense.

  12. Domingo says:

Just got done watching Atlanta-Seattle on the NFL Network. Can’t believe how wide open Seattle’s WR’s and TE’s were getting in the second half. Roman’s mouth has to be watering watching that.

    • Domingo says:

I also can’t believe how good Russell Wilson is. He and Kaep will have some mighty duels in the years to come.

    • shawnrhod says:

Yeah I am DVRing the Niner reply. Have to put the kid to bed. I cant wait for some alone time on the reply!!!

    • big niner says:

They were wide open. their defense is not that good and their ranking is skewed because of their poor schedule.

  13. Anewtoi says:

Hey guys.ive been away for a while but wanted to see in any of you would be tailgating or even going to the game this weekend. I’ll be tailgating in my rv with a group of about 10 friends/9er fans. We’ll be in the marshaling lot

  14. shawnrhod says:

I’m trying so hard to curtail my excitement b/c CK really showed something special. Kind of the accumulation of what we hoped for. But WOW!!!

All I could think about when watching that game was, CK is a man among boys out there.

Didn’t he just look like one of those little league, high school or small college kids that was clearly the best athlete on the field? Like Moss at Marshall… go check out some of those highlights if you can find them. I feel like this is what M. Vick or Alan Iverson looked like in high school in VA Beach area.

  15. shawnrhod says:

    Atlanta Def Game Plan:

*** As with almost any football match, some exceptions, the game will be won at the line of scrimmage

    1. Ends stay square and force CK to hand ball off. Atlanta needs to dominate the Dline PERIOD.

    2. If they use a spy, try a DB and not a LB. My god, CK is like a gazelle out there.

    3. Double Crab or VD when situation/formation calls for it. Who cares about Moss or AJJ, force Kap to throw to them. And Walker dude drops 3 a game.

    4. Keep everything in front and tackle. If Atlanta O can put some points on the board, this may pressure CK to try a big one and risk turnover or incomplete.

    5. Disguise def showing schemas they SF has not seen or will be expecting. Blitz off this scenario. Maybe sneak a Safety down as a robber for mid routes or zone blitz for slants.

    All easier said then done.

    GO NINERS!!!

    • Mr. Everything says:

Everyone says Gazelle. I say Cheetah. He uses his trailing arm for ballast which allows him to change direction very quickly at high speed, much like the big cat uses its tail.

  16. exgolfer says:

    Grant,

The answer to your question is as plain as the nose on your face, if I could see you, which I can’t, but you get what I’m saying.

Nolan should implement the following, all at the same time:

Put eight in the box to stuff Gore and LMJ.

Put not one, but two spies on CK.

Double cover MC and VD, while still keeping two safeties deep to help over the top on Moss and Walker.

If Nolan does this, he’ll have a reasonable chance to stop Kaepernick and the 49ers’ offense.

The only trick will be for Nolan to figure out a way to get away with having fourteen defenders on the field at one time.

  17. bayareafanatic says:

Atlanta barely beat the Raiders and the Cardinals. They lost to the Saints. They played one great game against the Giants.
I don’t want this to be a trap game, but they really don’t seem that impressive. Especially on defense.

  18. SourdoughSam says:

Hopefully the Niners win four in a row starting with breaking the streak in ATL and getting that NFC title. Bring home #6

    Poorly, most likely.

  21. Jack Hammer says:

Bears have hired former 49ers offensive coordinator Marc Trestman to be their Head Coach.

    • claude balls says:

      @ Jack:

Wow. Give Jimmy Johnson credit. He called it days ago.

      • Neal says:

        C balls,

Can you please copy and paste the article please ?

      • claude balls says:

        Neal:

Aren’t you cute, aping someone else’s insults. Because I am in a good mood, I’ll give you a link:

        http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-bears-hire-marc-trestman-20130115,0,6614538.story

I must warn you, however, that you will have to read several paragraphs before you get to the part about Jimmy Johnson. Is that asking too much? Maybe you should just ctrl+f “Jimmy” and skip right to it.

        Good luck.

      • Neal says:

        C balls,

Thank you for your help, you are very nice guy. Was Trestman the guy that Eddie D fired as offensive coordinator, when he hired Mooch and he said in that press announement, that ” he is gone” ?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        That’s him Neal.

      • rocket says:

They didn’t go for the candidate that might be a bigger name or better known. They went for a guy who will get the job done. Trestman is a great offensive innovator. The Eddie D. quote is always brought up, but Steve Young and Jerry Rice swear by the guy and the offense he ran in Oaklands last SB year was fantastic. Really good hire by the Bears.

      • AngusinCanada says:

Trestman has also worked with Cutler before, prepping him for the combine or something, I believe.

This is a good hire by the Bears. Their offense needs to improve, and he has a great track record in that regard.
Incidentally, the Montreal Alouettes, with Trestman as HC, and Anthony Calvillo as QB, have been a juggernaut in the CFL for close to a decade.

    • drsgrosse says:

That must make the Packers, Lions and Vikings ecstatic!!

    • Neal says:

      Jack,

Do you think Rev Singletary will be upset?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I remember when he was the 9ers OC and BW was a consultant for the 9ers. The offense was stumbling and BW sat in the box with him helping him with the play calling and adjustments.

  22. Big niner says:

    Desperate!!! Watch Cutler implode!!

    • old coach says:

The bears will go down the drain for the next 10 yrs its what happens when u fire a solid if not spectacular head coach in the nfl.
Case in point the raiders and J. Gruden, the 9ers and Mooch or the chargers and M. schotenhiemer. The point being there just are’nt that many guys out there who can be a HC at this level. If you are winning consistently do’nt change

      • rocket says:

        old coach,

I have to disagree with you. Trestman is a really good Coach and got a raw deal in SF after having to follow Shanahan with a declining team. Really smart guy, even keeled, has been a HC for a few years in the CFL and was the choice after an exhaustive search by the Bears GM.

      • old coach says:

Rocket my comment was more about L. Smith than Trestman. I just think it is pure stupidity to fire someone you know can win in the nfl and replace him with someone you feel very confident can win in the NFL. It very often explodes in the teams face

      • rocket says:

        old coach,

Good point, but the thing with Lovie came down to the fact he could never figure out the offensive side of the ball. His entire time there they won with defense and a middling offense. It was kind of the same situation as Tony Dungy in TB. Great HC, as is Lovie, but Dungy didn’t win a Championship until he inherited a great offense in Indy. You are right though, Lovie is a great HC and will get another shot at some point much like Dungy.

      • claude balls says:

        @ old coach:

I read somewhere (can’t remember which article) the suggestion that the Bears’ thinking may have been that Trestman has demonstrated the ability to take a good team and make it great. Apparently, that’s what he did in the CFL.

“Solid but unspectacular” coaches are not likely to win Super Bowls, and Lovie Smith seemed to have taken the Bears as far as he was going to take them. He also was unable to fix the team’s problems on offense.

You are correct, however, that this is likely a boom or bust hire.

      • AngusinCanada says:

Trestman (with Anthony Calvillo at QB) established a dynasty with the Montreal Alouettees over the last several years.
Trestman has also worked with Cutler in the past. It’s a good hire, notwithstanding that firing Lovie may or may not have been wise.

  23. drsgrosse says:

I think Nolan will force Kaep to hand off on the read option, put 8 in the box vs Gore & LMJ and double Crabs.

    • big niner says:

Even that won’t work. If the man up like the Packers, CK will take off. If they play zone, then they’re not stacking the box and the WR’s have room to run. ……

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      DRS,

Agree. They have to pick their poison. Do they stop CK running or passing. Which to them is more dangerous? If they focus on stopping CK running, they can double MC. It will then be up to the TE’s and GR to adjust. Additionally, the Atl DE’s will need to not over commit themselves to CK or FG – at times they will need to “bluff” who they will attack, trying to make CK adjust to them (reads). But I just don’t see them stopping the 9ers.

  24. Matt says:

I don’t see a need to double Vernon Davis. There is no chemistry or timing between him and Kaepernick. Walker can’t seem to catch a cold in winter let alone a pass.
The focus will stay on shutting down Crabtree first. Kaepernick second. Gore 3rd. The double team will be on crabtree.
I don’t think you need a spy for Kaepernick. You just need to avoid over pursuing. Funnel him toward the help.
It’s going to be up to Kaepernick to open everything else on the offense. He is going to need to hit the same touch passes he hit with VD against GB in the second half. That will open everything else up. If that happens, Scheme isn’t going to matter. It’s going to fall on the ATL offense to keep up with the SF offense.

    • old coach says:

I hope this season is the end of the road for D. Walker with the 9ers. Has any one heard where the Toilolo or Ertz are being projected in the draft. I believe that the 9ers draft will be heavily weighted toward D but i would’nt be shocked to see them use a 3rd rd pick on a TE

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Harbaugh’s experimenting with Dobbs at TE shows he covets large guys that can block and catch “above pad level.’

There are TE routes besides the deep seem the 49ers are not exploiting and need to in a big way.

Vernon and Walker both have great speed, but a big TE with good hands that can dribble out into soft spots in zone coverage would help. Those types get the cheapie first downs that move the chains and frustrate defenses.

      • AngusinCanada says:

What about Garrett Celek? Guy looks good in the limited time I’ve seen him.

  25. claude balls says:

    Off Topic.

From a list of list of random statistical observations, there is this note:

Although David Akers has had his struggles on field goals this year, he has averaged 68.7 yards per kickoff which is sixth in the league, and the highest among remaining teams.

I wonder how much of a factor that played in him retaining the kicking job. According to the SFGate, 3 of Akers’ 7 kickoffs were touchbacks, and the Packers’ average starting field position was the 18 yard line.

  26. Brodie2Washington says:

“What do you think Nolan will consider the 49ers’ fast ball?”
    Gore running between tackles.

“Do you think he’ll double team Vernon Davis or Michael Crabtree?”
Yes, but not at the same time. Nolan will (try) to take away Vernon’s deep seem, and will play Crabtree tight. He will coach the DBs this week on tackling and minimizing RAC.

“Do you think Nolan will load the box with eight defenders, or do you think he’ll play a two-deep zone and attempt to stop Frank Gore with seven defenders?”

I don’t know. Nolan would be smart to gamble and have all linebackers/DBs play a little tighter, daring the 49ers to throw over the top.
49er WRs have been open over the top, but the timing with Keapernick has yet to be established. Kaep is consistently throwing too long/early. Despite the great arm, the long bomb has been Kaepernicks weakest throw. (that will be fixed in time)

  27. 23jordan/ says:

I must admit that Nolan did a pretty decent job on Peyton Manning earlier this year. He may be able to disguise some coverages and confuse Kap. However, I feel like Kap has the arm strength to throw into the tightest of windows. Manning no longer has the arm strength to do that. I feel like our running game will make the difference in this game. We have to stay with it and we have to get VD involved in this game. If Miller from Sratt
E can catch 9 passes for 142 yards, VD should have a monster game. As long as VD holds on to the football. If not, we’re gonna have to accept 3 drops and 5 catches from Walker. I say we look for Celek. He will certainly be overlooked.

    • Domingo says:

The one thing about Kaep is that it seems to take him a while to get warmed up. Its almost like he needs to face some adversity for his accuracy to be pin point. He certainly struggled a bit early on Saturday night but after the taunting penalty in the second quarter he responded with the great pin point laser to Crab. Hope he hits the ground running, so to speak, on Sunday.

  28. Brodie2Washington says:

Kaepernick has been amazing, but he still has trouble seeing underneath coverage before its too late.

If I were Nolan I would pass rush odd numbers… 3 or 5 defenders. If 4 pass rushers, zone blitz and drop an OLB into coverage.
