SANTA CLARA — The 49ers appear to be preparing to play the Green Bay Packers next Saturday. At practice this afternoon, the 49ers’ offensive practice squad players were all wearing the numbers of the Packers’ stars:
Ricardo Lockette was wearing No.87 for Jordy Nelson, Chad Hall was wearing No. 18 for Randall Cobb, and Garrett Celek was wearning No.88 for Jermichael Finley.
These players were warming up on the far side of the field field. On the near side of the field, in front of Jim Harbaugh and Brad Seely and the reporters, David Akers and Billy Cundiff competed in Day 2 of the kicker competition. Both guys made most of their field goals, but Cundiff kicked the ball harder and farther. I saw him drill a 54-yarder. I did not see Akers attempt anything longer than 51 yards.
Justin Smith practiced for the second day in a row. To protect his torn triceps tendon, he wraps a brace around his left arm from shoulder to wrist. The brace keeps his arm slightly bent so he cannot fully extend it, although he can bend it.
The 49ers will open their locker room for player interviews at 3:15.

If I’m to understand correctly Grant, that brace will not allow him to extend his arm and thereby preventing the tear from ripping more?
I guess, but it seems bending the arm would stretch and put stress on the tendon.
Actually extending the arm is what works the triceps. When you want to strengthen your tricep you get a dumbell and extend your arm. Try flexing your tricep. You do it by extending your arm. The brace will help JS a little but when he is trying to push off blockers, even though he cant extend his arm fully, he still needs to use the stabilizing part of muscle. Depending on the tear is how effective he can do this. The good part about the injury is that he can wrap up deffenders and pull them in tight. Essential for the stunt he and AS perform often.
I certainly hope this “Packers” day was just today and that they spend time being through on all the possibilities. Harbaugh openly admitted last year that they prepared more for the Packers than the Giants (Because we had already played them).
I hope the team the Niners play has to win a grueling, triple OT to get here. Not rooting for injuries… just nice, tired legs trying to run on soggy the Candlestick turf. Or as Randy Cross said about Anthony Dorsett before the 81 NCF championship… “get him on the swamp!”
I’m revising my wishes for who the Niners play. The Niner game is on a Saturday. If it’s Seattle or Washington, they play at The Stick on a six day week. I’ll take that over facing Rogers.
How is Har-Har going to pick the kicker with the hot foot for the play-offs?
