‘Thank God for Ginn’

By PHIL BARBER

I learned something about 49ers safety Donte Whitner at Media Day that many of you probably knew already. He has a tattoo on his right forearm that reads “Thank God for Ginn.”

When Whitner first mentioned it to a reporter, I thought he was kidding, poking some fun at teammate Ted Ginn Jr. But he showed off the ink from his seat on the dais, and it’s real, a testament not to the 49ers punt returner, but to Ted Ginn Sr., who coached Whitner and Ginn Jr. on the same team at Glenville High School in Cleveland.

Ginn Sr., a legendary prep coach and community activist, has survived a most difficult year. He spent nearly 60 days in a hospital after doctors removed a tumor on his pancreas. Some of his closest friends thought he was going to die, but he made a strong recovery and is expected to be in New Orleans for the game Sunday.

Tattoos have been a popular subject here, thanks to the 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick, possibly the most illustrated quarterback in NFL history. Whitner, who has voluminous tattoos, thought Kaepernick had the most on the team, but Kap conceded that tight end Vernon Davis is the team’s current tat champ.

“Maybe he got another one last weekend,” Whitner said of Davis.

You’ve run out of ideas, but not money if that’s what you have tattooed.

    • Highpriest333 says:

I don’t have any ink on me. But I understand someone paying tribute to a mentor that changed their life. Best wishes and health to a man that has dedicated his life to teaching young men how to be men.

    • Darren says:

I’m a real 49er fan, Stan. I just don’t like to disrespect our opposition. Thankfully nobody on the Raiders stole anything on the team. I’ve been a fan for 33 years, but I’ve been having 2nd thoughts about continuing to be a niner fan if they win the Superbowl. I’m the only one that feels it’s theft.

      • Jaga says:

        why dude?

is it because of how Alex has been treated?

I think you should look at it this way, its the type of offense we are running that is dictating everything.

We were once the best at running the WCO and now we are the best at the pistol.

The only reason CK is playing QB is because he can run this offense the best. This has nothing to do with Alex.

        We should all enjoy it.

While fools like ninermd, gay-bay and welcher focus on continous hate for Alex.

      • Darren says:

Jaga, I am hopeful, really hopeful, my job does not make me work Sunday. I really feel I’m going to crack if I have to see the 49ers. I can’t stomach CK. I can’t stomach Harbaugh. I can’t stomach SF being looted and burned because the 49ers got a new set of hooligans for fans, and these same fans hate Smith but love a man in CK that has tattoos and stole his job. I miss the team we had, and it’ll never show up again. CK will never be the Qb that we had in Montana, Young, and Garcia, and SMith’s career will be ruined unless he goes to Arizona, and I bet Smith wants to go there too just to have 2 ops to beat Harbaugh.

    • Stan says:

You guys didnt read my followup? Bob took so long to get to the point,I thought it was what the title stated.
So sorry..I guess Bob isnt Grant..get to the point.

  2. Stan says:

Ah,it was about his father? You took to long to mention that.

  3. Razoreater says:

Great news for the Ginn family. I said before that Ted Ginn Jr. has looked more dangerous lately, and I’d give him an opportunity to return a kickoff. Hope he breaks one and takes it to the house for his dad and the 49ers.

  4. Grimey9er says:

His nice return against ATL was very timely.

  5. Ralph Melaragno says:

    Phil ~

How nice it is to have you now involved with this blog. Your insights are always valuable and informative, and you write with class. It’s a pleasure to see you here (I almost missed your presence).

A piece on a tattoo may not be earth-shaking, but it sure beats the incessant drumbeat about Harbaughs. Thanks for bringing us a nice change of pace.

    • Heidelberg Slim says:

This blog has become much better since you took over. Please don’t leave Phil, it’s like the old days around here…

  6. ninermd says:

Party plans party plans!!!! What’s everyone’s party plans?
    Lets go Faithful!!!! Wheeeew!

    • Sean in Canada says:

Sitting on the same spot on my couch, wearing the same clothes I’ve worn for each game I’ve watched this season. Kinda superstitious.

      • ninermd says:

Lol me too. The first time those bud light commercials came on folks that I had over looked directly at me.
I also wear the same clothes (non washed) until a loss.
Gonna have a big party, my twist is I’m renting a fog machine and I’m going to set up the canopy in the front courtyard. Ill have my niece work the front gate and signal when a guest is coming in. If they’re a 9er fan ill que some music and announce them on the mic. The guests that arrived earlier will be lined up and ready to high five them as they make their entrance inside. Kinda like the players do when they hit the field. Got a game I made up for the guests, the Xbox in the family room for whoever brings their brats over, and ill hook up another TV for the patio. Got champaign and 6 year old illegal fireworks I’ve been saving for the next 9er superbowl. I can’t wait for this game.

      • Crab15 says:

Sean – Are you that dude on couch in Bud Light commercial?

      • AngusinCanada says:

        NinerMD,
That sounds awesome! Small matter of about 3000 miles, or I’d crash it!

    • Darren says:

If I work, I eat at McDonalds. If I dont’ work, I’ll be out fly fishing all day.

    • Heidelberg Slim says:

At the opening kickoff, I’m hopping on the Streetglide and riding the Sierra foothills listening to the game on the radio — yes Harleys have sound systems. Looking forward to it…

  7. msclemons67 says:

Before Harbaugh arrived there were a lot of times I said “thank God for gin” while watching 49ers games.

  8. Prime Time says:

When are we gonna talk about who has the better defense? That is the matchup within the matchup. I wanna see Suggs and Lewis bent over, catching their breath, hands on knees late in the 3rd!

    • Razoreater says:

I’ve been devoting time to using visualization techniques as to how the Super Bowl will unfold. Our Offensive Line grinds their defense into submission, while our Defensive Front never lets Captain Flacco become comfortable.

  9. MWNiner says:

    Prime..
I heard one talking head saying the Niners have the #2 Defense..
Don’t remember what he said the Ravens had…
But, I think it’s quite possible you might get your wish..
because they’ll be trying to figure whether to chase Frank, Vernon, Delanie, Crabs, or CK ..

They have their work cut out for them, huh ?

    Oh.. Jack.
    thanx for tryin’

    • Prime Time says:

Yes they do. And all those guys have to make plays but it will come down to the Niners oline. John H will come after Kaep. How they hold up and if CK can exploit a heavy blitz, it’s game over.

  10. Crab15 says:

Which is more likely Sunday, Moss Super Bowl MVP, Akers 4-4 on FG’s or Beyonce’ wardrobe malfunction!

  11. Darren says:

Is it possible for Alex Smith to say no to a trade and insist on being released? I can’t see Smith wanting the 49ers to trade him to a bad team, especially for Revis on the Jets. I would just release Smith. We never got anything for Julian Peterson did we?

  12. Crab15 says:

Someone on here sounds just like DS………hmmm? What a sad and lonely life. Secretly begging for Niners to lose.

  13. Darren says:

Someone here sounded like a 49er fan but ducked the question. I thought real 49er fans wanted to see the best for their players, but I guess not. I see Crab15 has nothing but hate for alex Smith. I guess I can understand since Crabtree did sell out his qb AND embraced the CK as ‘his man.’ Yeah, reminds me of how TO sold Garcia down the river.

  14. Darren says:

Gee, Crab, I’m sure Grant won’t find that amusing at all. But I got one for you: Do you like music?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlIq_kYuhI0

Now that is the best video going on Jim Harbaugh. I had no idea he was such a swinger in that cool hip outfit!

  15. Darren says:

So is CK going to ‘kiss his bicep’ again and mock Tebow in front of the millions and the millions of 49er fans that won’t even add up to 10 million?

guys dont feed this idiot (Darren) he even answers his own posts!

    • Darren says:

      DC9er
You scared bro? i’m not threatening, insulting, or trolling. It’s sad how a little conversation escalates into fans like you crying like 5 years telling Grant the big bad fan insulted CK and our coach and he needs to go away.
      Whereas:
ANOTHER FAN will just show up and maybe say the same thing.
You know very well if there wasn’t controversy, there wouldn’t be sites.

  17. gsixty says:

Darren is on all of the blogs. His aliases that I know on different forms are:
    -Guest49er
    -Piers Morgan
    -Molly
    -AlexLover
    -Bottomline
    -FoxyRoxy6969

and i am sure many more. He trolls on KNBR too. He really must have no life to troll 24 hours a day against the 49ers. If i had an award for most dedicated 49er hater, he is it.

    • Darren says:

All not true. It’s amazing when people lie about another fan that they need to make up more lies. I’m not going to get into a political bashing war as they got political forums you can take it up with. If I say CK is not going to last, that’s called an opinion and nothing else. You want to call it trolling or being a mean miser, fine with me. It takes all kinds to make a world as I am my own 49er fan.

      • Mr. Everything says:

You are nothing more than a dim-witted, angry loser who lost all connection with reality long ago and now gets his jollies trying to get under other people’s skin anonymously.

      • Darren says:

OK, Mr. Everything, tell you what: Get together with all your friends. Print me out an exclusive of WHO NOT TO TALK TO and I’ll make it a point NOT to mention you IF, you don’t mention me, OK? You want to disagree, that’s fine.

      • MWNiner says:

        Darren..
Do you ever stop to think.. that in this season..
you witnessed something that’s never happened before
        (in the NFL) .?
Do you even realize.. you’ve witnessed history ?

A brash young man named Colin.. actually beat the top 3 QBs in the league (very convincingly, too !) ..
and then .. beat the the #4 QB …
        by taking his job !

No .. all you can do is.. to cry about how Alex got cheated ..
(and not to mention .. all that stuff you wrote over on the Bee-blog) .

        Its a business… sonny …
They make money from putting the best product on the field ..
And right now … Colin IS the best product !

Like it or not … that’s the way the cookie bounces !

        Don’t like it ???

        Too bad !!

STFU about it … it’s in the past..

Get over it .. and GET A LIFE !

    • matt49erfan831 says:

Yeah…you should read the stuff he writes on Sando’s blog…he’s threatened to end it all if the Niners win on Sunday…didn’t he get banned by KNBR?

  18. MWNiner says:

Sounds like he doesn’t have a life

    • dc9er says:

      exactly

      • Darren says:

Really? Got a job, good friends, good fortune, and trying to fit in on a great forum. But people do all they can to get me off for they’re scared of a little opinion. I bet you all booed when Smith got picked and sure you cheered CK for you always wanted Smith out, and that’s fact.

      • FanFor9er says:

        Darren says:
“I bet you all booed when Smith got picked and sure you cheered CK for you always wanted Smith out, and that’s fact.” Yeah??? I wanted Rogers. Do you know what? You remind me of that annoying fly that buzzes around constantly past your ears. Opinions are one thing but yours is not an opinion, yours is a crusade. You have actually made my day because it has been full of laughs. But fish and guests that stay longer than three days. . . Well, I won’t finish that. . . (I think you get the picture.)

      • Darren says:

Yeah? Get over Rodgers. You and Rodgers are both little girls whining about something you can’t have. If Rodgers wanted to come to the 49ers, he should’ve bailed out GB when his contract came up. Alex Smith was swimming in the water back then. WE could’ve actually countered what GB offered, but oh no, York had no dedication and still doesn’t. Well I hope GB, Atl, and NO get their payback next year. If CK dares to kiss his bicep, be worse then what Owens was doing on the star in Texas.

  19. Darren says:

It turns into a ‘war’ Mr. Everything because you and the other fans refute what i have to say. I don’t agree with Harbaugh. I don’t agree with CK. I don’t agree with the situation. I won’t even agree to having a parade for the 49ers as it should be on Saturday and you know I’m right. It scares people that much to call me a troll, whine to a moderator like a 5-year old rather then say why CK is the future and why Harbaugh did what he did, and nobody has any feeling or sympathy for SMith because ‘we can’t have any.’ Last year, fans were that scared that I was right about the 49ers.

    • Mr. Everything says:

      Darren,

You’re an idiot. Plain and simple.

CK is a better QB than Alex, by far, and will soon prove to be better than every other QB in the NFL. He has the strongest arm, is the most accurate, and has the capacity to escape the pass rush unlike statues like Manning and Brady, who lose in the post season because of their lack of mobility.

You can’t argue facts, so you resort to talking about religion, gay bashing, and hurling insults at the Niners new management. This team is the closest there is to the Montana teams of old. Harbaugh is like Walsh, Kaep like Montana, and this defense is like the old defenses of Lott.

Either you know this and argue just to be a total a**, or you are too stupid to understand.

      • Darren says:

Least with Montana, Young, and Garcia, we had 1-2 WR tandems. All I see out of our WR group is just Crabtree. Bal has 4 WRs to throw to and a TE. WE have only 2 minimum and a TE. Mr. Everything, it will be a sad day when the 49ers win and Harbaugh were to say he was like Walsh that would never do a thing like that to his own QB. But hey, if you feel cheating is the way to go to win a SUperbowl, I feel really bad for the NFL and maybe Obama may have a point about whatever issue he has with NFL.

      • dc9er says:

….pretty obvious he’s too stupid to understand. that will be the last time i feed this troll, hope others do the same.

  20. It's true, I'm a 49er fan says:

Hey everybody, 30 plus years of being a niner fan. I can’t understand how a simple opinion can be turned into a childish troll war. All Darren has been saying is he doesn’t agree with Harbaugh. He’s not saying fire the man. He doesn’t agree with the timing of CK, yet he’s not advocating get rid of him has he? What is wrong with you people that can’t take an opinion? What goes on in real life and a sporting world can be confusing when you can get away with a lot of things in the sporting world that seem openly wrong.

    • Mr. Everything says:

You are sick in the head, Darren. Stop posting and then responding to yourself. It’s pathetic. You’re not fooling anybody.

I couldn’t care less about you, per se, but it is unnerving to realize that there is actually someone like you in the world. I thought sickos like you only existed in movies about psychopathic child-molesters.

      • Darren says:

Never in my 33 years of being a 49ers fan have I ever encountered any fan that questions my patriotism to the team just because I don’t drink the koolaid, bash on Smith, support Harbaugh, and be proud of CK that can’t throw. When I was CK can’t throw, how is that trolling? He’s not having numbers like every other QB has. So what if people like Stafford, Brees, and Eli miss the playoffs, who cares? Out of 16 games, I will take a minimum of 3 games that have had 300 yards in that game, or even more, but I would take 3 games where my QB led the team to comebacks and wins or gave an effort in losing. I’m glad you’re not a Mr. Perfect in the real world.

      • Mr. Everything says:

Wow, Darren. You simply can’t string a series of coherent thoughts together. I’m really sorry. All this time I thought you might actually just be a d*ck, but in fact you are a special-needs patient. Can’t argue with stupid.

  21. Darren says:

That’s OK, Mr. Everything. That’s why they call our 5 SUperbowls the good old days and this SUperbowl will be worthless: 6 to 3, advertisers losing their money so Obama got to bail them out, and 2 anemic QBs out there. I hope somebody drops the Superbowl trophy during the parade like the Stanley CUp trophy was dropped.

  22. MWNiner says:

    Darren..

I really hope your bicycle helmet is in good condition
as you ride the short bus to school !

    • Darren says:

Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! I love the short bus jokes. It’s better to ride a short bus then to ride in your clown 49er mobile to work with your two flags sticking out when you go 75 miles on the freeway to work. Man, I get sick seeing the vendors hanging around gas stations selling 49er junk for over a hundred dollars. Man you think the police in my area would ask for their vendor license, but then again, they let the ice cream vendor sell his junk illegally to kids.

    • FanFor9er says:

      According to what I’m reading,
I think Darren did a full-face plant on the windshield of the short bus.

  23. Hov says:

Welcome backs bs, I mean ds, I mean Darren smh.

    • Ed from AZ says:

This guy is in a class of his own when it comes to mindless stupidity!

      • Darren says:

Who are you talking about? Boy, just because I don’t wear a monkey suit like you, eat salad with a fork, and don’t drink like a Stone Cold Steve Austin doesn’t mean I can’t be a 49er fan.

    • Heidelberg Slim says:

Three in the morning??? You must have gotten a hold of some great crank Vee…

      • Darren says:

Sorry if the source of the report is a big turn off to fellow 49er fans. Michael Savage is probably not a sporting fan as Rush is. It’s great to feel welcome on a terrific forum as who has it better then us? Noooooooobody. Of course I did wish Harbaugh would wait until the Superbowl win to come up with sayings like this.

  24. old coach says:

Back to reality. What are you doing S.B. sunday? My pops will be 86 yo on sunday so we are having a S.B.\B-day party. Pops was at the 1st 9er home game in 1946, brought me to my first game at Kezar in approx 1958 and took my youngest nephew his youngest granchild to his first game in 2009. So we will be celebrating 66 yrs of our family being 9er fans. Go 9ers Go CK GO as[we might just need him]

Being a Niners fan in England is a lonely job, but someones gotta do it!

Oh and Many happy returns to your pop!

  25. Mr. Everything says:

    Grant and Everyone

Time to dip out on this weblog. Have a good end to your week and a nice Superbowl. Get back at you all come draft time.

Hopefully by then, Grant, you will have figured out a way to get rid of this “Darren” virus that has made your blog the worst on the web. You really ought to moderate content a little more when you attract this kind of moronic garbage. It’s one thing when the usual suspects like Bay, Jordo, & myself go toe to toe with guys like Claude, Ribico, & Prime, but allowing this virus to come into your blog and spew nonstop idiocy that is clearly meant to do nothing other than instigate fights is really a bad precedent.

So I’m out. Have a good one, Grant. I hope your mom has a successful surgery and recovers her health quickly and fully. Stay positive. It will mean the world to her.

    • old coach says:

Mr E i would never encourage censorship but if we ALL and i mean ALL do’nt respond to non serious posts they will stop. everyone of us who has responded are to blame also.

    • Bayareafanatic says:

      Jesus,
I told you guys about the “Virus” two weeks ago. No one listened. STOP ENGAGING DARREN and it will go away. Darren has been banned from ESPN blog, worn out his welcome at The Sac Bee blog. Now it’s our turn. We need to A. Ignore the fool completely, and B. Grant needs to come back from his two day hiatus to rid the room of this fool.

      • BigP says:

Grant should just ban the clown so that he doesn’t ruin the Super Bowl experience for the fans on here. There is no point to anything the idiot says and they are not a fan. Grant isn’t a fan either though, so maybe he doesn’t understand the frustration.

      • Spaceborn says:

If it were only that easy. This a person with knowledge of how to use proxy servers, multible modems and email adddresses to confuse any IP detection software Grant may use. You can ban an account and there will be another one used with a different IP and email in minutes.

Ignoring doesn’t work because that will just create a new persona to start it all over again with. For him, sites like these are the easiest where he doesn’t have to create an account. And even that would only cause a slight delay of a day or two at the most.

I’ve seen this go on for years now and have not seen any blog able to ban more than one name at a time.

    • Neal says:

I have not been on that much, the last two days but can this Darren guy, be as bad as DS?

  26. old coach says:

Completely off the subject but can you imagine after CK gets 25 to 30 starts under his belt and he has mastered game management skills. CK running this 9er O with no huddle. I believe we could score 40 to 50 pts a game in a no huddle offense. Do you think with Harbaughs natural tendency towards being conservative would allow him to try that?

  27. Razoreater says:

Ed Dickson say the 49ers defense has a lot of holes to be exploited. He expects to have a big day…Question for you guys(darren not included)Who is Ed Dickson?

  28. MWNiner says:

    Bay..
Thanx for reminding me who gave us the heads up on the virus..
Seems it didn’t take as long for him to wear holes in the welcome mat (here) .. as it did for him on the Bee-blog ..

Darren … please take your photo (Crabs15 posted) with you as you leave..
    and.. oh yeah …

Don’t let the door hit ya..
where the good lord split ya !

  29. Nick says:

Here are some interesting facts/stats about the Niners defense. The Niners were the 2nd scoring defense in the league this year. As this article points out, defense wins championships. Go Niners and bring home another SB win.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/60926/top-things-to-know-49ers-defense

  30. FanFor9er says:

Darren says:“Yeah? Get over Rodgers. You and Rodgers are both little girls whining about something you can’t have. If Rodgers wanted to come to the 49ers.”

    What??

Now you have problem with girls???

And little??? I’m more than you can handle.

    • DClark says:

Dammit you had to go and feed it didn’t you!

      • Darren says:

        Here are some worrisome facts:
Players when retiring and going to a SUperbowl got a decent chance of winning.
The NFC West is 0-3 in Superbowls thus far: 2 losses to PItt (Ari/Sea) and loss to New England. Wow, New England could’ve been 2 and 0 vs. NFC West in the Superbowl, oh well.
Last time a player retired to my knowledge, Jerome the Bus Bettis, took his no. 6 seed Pitt to the Superbowl.
Either way, I’m glad to have been a 49er fan. I know I lost my faith in the team, but someday, I’ll get it back. Now then, who’s got it better then us?

  31. Neal says:

I still can’t believe the freaking Niners are in the Super Bowl, this is not a dream, I am going to need a respirator on Sunday and some paddles.

    • MWNiner says:

      Believe it, Neal …

Go ahead … pinch yourself !

Big bro (John) won’t be very happy at the end of the game, and
Ray Lewis won’t be retiring with a ring, either !

Where are going to watch the game? I’m staying home just like the previous two games. My brother is having a party, but I told him no way am I going there. Last time I went there to watch a game, Seattle whipped our as$. Besides, I can’t stand non-football chit chat during games from his in-laws.
