Welcome to Harbi Gras

By PHIL BARBER

Just wanted to let our 49ers readers know that columnist Bob Padecky and I will be blogging all week from New Orleans. Both of us arrive Monday. I get there fairly late, so look for my entries starting Tuesday morning. We’ll be filling your head with anecdotes, observations, opinions, pertinent quotes and links — all related to Super Bowl XLVII.

And as our colleague Grant Cohn has stated here, he will be adding his incisive analysis all week. It will be almost more than a dedicated 49ers can take. Almost.

It’s either going to be 35-0 or a 6-3 Superbowl. Don’t hope for a 62 to 35 game. I guess it doesn’t bode well as NFC won Pro Bowl like last year. Yuck. I wish CK passed more.

      HUH?

      • Darren says:

The SUperbowl, look Coffee, here are the stats:

        CK, let’s say 19 for 24, 215 yards
        Flacco, 21 for 32 for 245 yards

Can you tell me why either of that is a good Superbowl to have:
Gore, runs 27 times 175 yards
Ray Rice runs 25 times for 180 yards

Fans want to see high flying action from the Qbs. DOesn’t matter, just get it done and over with. No wonder I’m some old crank.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

/facepalm I feel like its the episode of Family Guy where Peter cant stop singing “surfin bird” and tricks people into responding if they “heard about the word”

Had I known you were going to go that direction I would have never responded and I feel dirty for having done so.

    • Darren says:

I feel like Brian the dog listening to you Peter trying to say this will be a great Superbowl just like Peter can get through the day staying out of trouble, and we know how that turns out. If your QB can’t pass, you don’t win. That’s my old saying.

  2. Coffee's for closers says:

Welcome back Bob remember us? You lasted all of 20 seconds before they replaced you with Grant. Thankfully Grant has the youthfulness needed for this type of audience.

  3. Crab15 says:

Phil – Good to have you back in here for Super Bowl week!

  4. Darren says:

Is Lowell Cohn, Tim Kawakami, Nancy Gay, Ann Killion, Monte Poole, and retired reporter Dave Albee of the Marin I J going to be there too? I hope Saints fans are not causing trouble. They got to be sore of what the 49ers did to them last year.

  5. Crab15 says:

I hope Roman doesn’t run those Gore dive plays up middle on first downs. Especially when Ngata is lined up in the middle. Goodman has no chance one on one vs Ngata. Ravens have been lining Ngata up next to Suggs sometimes and it’s working well for them.
I think Niners should keep running game more to the outside in first half. What do you guys think?

    • Darren says:

The old 49ers did a lot of sweep running with Garrison Hearst that worked out. This pistol run up the middle is not going to work. They need the guards to pull as I can count the days Randy Cross was a good puller with Bubba Paris, so Goodwin and A Davis better learn to pull and Gore better learn to run left or right. Rice was a big contributor too, so Crabtree better man up out there.

      • Crab15 says:

I would continue the read /option outside obviously but the runs up the middle won’t work vs Ravens. Why waste plays? We can run Gore and Dixon up middle when we are up 10+ points.
I heard a Greg Roman comment that he always has an ace in the hole play or player for each game.
Delaney Walker can fall under radar and make some big plays. He may drop an easy catch but he
is a playmaker when it counts. Walker can be that ace in the hole Sunday.

      • dc9er says:

I think you are both righ….gonna be difficult to run up the middle on the ravens. Team speed wise I think they can exploit the edges as Lewis and the linebacking corp are slower sideline to sideline. Gonna be interesting to see what Roman and the coaches come up with. The sooner the offense rolls the better

    • ninermd says:

I think we will see more screen plays in this game than we’ve seen in any game since Roman has been here. I also think there will be more sweep plays for LMJ to get to the outside. Wouldn’t doubt if I seen a hurry up offense injected also. Get these old birds running and off balance and this game is a blowout. One thing about GR I do like is he seems to come up with an eliment of surprise game plan more often now that ck is under enter. One thing he hasn’t been lately is predictable.

      • dc9er says:

A hurry up offense is something I’d be surprised to see, but it would be welcomed. I’m actually thinking the ravens are gonna do the quick pace stuff since we had a hard time with it against new england.

      • ninermd says:

Dc… I think Baltimore does the same. They used it in the second half against the patriots and it worked well for them. And I’m sure they know we haven’t faired well against it. For some reason I just see different wrinkles we haven’t seen a lot of with our offense. It’s all or nothing now and I can see GR an JH pulling out all the stops and the eliment of surprise.

  6. Darren says:

The Rams had better backup players for Warner. I don’t see that on the 49ers because they were’t a factor each week. Crabtree and V Davis are the go to, but Walker, Gore, Moss, A Jenkins, they’ve been non factors. I have never liked Greg Roman for he doesn’t call big pass plays.

  7. Brotha Tuna says:

Lotta spam on here, need a pooper-scooper.
Hi- Phil. Gonna need Tums and a Toxics Suit.

  8. Razoreater says:

Welcome aboard Phil, enjoy the ride.

  9. AES says:

You guys have some big shoes to fill as pinch-hitters for Grant (lol).
JK! Welcome back boys, looking forward to the latest news from the Big Easy.
    Superbowl week is here!!!

  10. AES* says:

    To Phil and Bob,
Hey guys I know that things will start to move at a frenzied pace pretty soon, but if you have some time, I wonder if you guys have any comments or opinions regarding the Pro-Bowl game?

My thinking is that the players (well most) are not playing at full pace. The defense is limited on blitzes and other options hence the ridiculous scores.

I can’t fault the players for taking the ‘safe’ mode of play because an injury would be disasterous to their cash flow.

In your opinion, what can the NFL do to make this game more fan friendly and entertaining?
I haven’t seen the TV ratings for the game yet, but I would venture to say that they probably will not be good.

      AES:

I just don’t think there is a perfect fix for the Pro Bowl. You can play a baseball game at 90-percent effort, and probably no one gets hurt. And you can play one at 70 percent, and it still looks OK. If you play a football game at 90 percent, there will be injuries, and if you play it at 70 percent, it looks horrible.

I think we (including Roger Goodell) just need to accept the fact that the Pro Bowl is an exhibition. If it’s intense enough to mean something, none of the best athletes will play. It will never be the spectacle that the MLB All-Star Game is. It probably won’t even be the NBA All-Star Game, which isn’t very good.

Even the timing is difficult. Schedule it midseason and players will be so worried about injuries the game will be a travesty. The week before Super Bowl, and you miss out on seeing any of the Super Bowl participants. A week after the Super Bowl, no one cares.

So no, I don’t have any strong advice. To paraphrase any NFL player on any day: The Pro Bowl is what it is.

  11. Hoferfan67 says:

    Phil and Bob,

Looking forward to some good N.O. reads from the two of you!

    Grant,

I look forward to your keen analysis (reads) to keep us focused on the intricacies of the game!

  12. old coach says:

Welcome Bob and Phil. Grant do’nt let the old timers push you around. Best wishes to your Mom. Go 9ers.

  13. Darren says:

Hey Old Coach, who you calling old timers? We 33 year fans of the 49ers need more respect then that. I just wanted a better Superbowl, but if the Pro Bowl was awful, SUperbowl doesn’t bode well and we won’t see no 62 to 35.

  14. Darren says:

How come if Baltimore arrives a day later, they say that’s going to hurt them. For what reason? Maybe the 49ers could’ve arrived MOnday as well rather then last night. I can already hear excuses, like if the 49ers lose, they should’ve arrived a few days later.

  15. Msclemons67 says:

A Skinny Post sighting is always welcome.

  16. Stan says:
