Donte Whitner spoke at his locker Tuesday morning. This is what he said about defending the 49ers’ offense.
Q: How tough is it for a defense to defend the 49ers’ read option?
WHITNER: It’s tough for everybody on a defense to be disciplined with their eyes, especially safeties and cornerbacks. It’s tough. If you get your eyes out of position one time and take a false step, it could be a big play. That’s what they’ve been doing. They’ve been taking advantage of that, and hopefully it continues.
Q: Can you blitz that scheme?
WHITNER: I don’t really know if there are too many coordinators around the league right now who really know how to stop it yet. When you watch Washington, you see guys out of position. When you watch our offense now, you see guys out of position based on where the football is and where the football is and where their eyes are. Everybody has a key on the play, and when you don’t read that, you move your eyes one second and you can be beat. And that’s what these offenses do. It’s really a “trick-‘em” type of type of offense. It’s trick ‘em, and then we’re going deep on you. I like it.

I like it too. I’ll like it a whole lot better when the 49ers return from Atlanta with the NFC Championship trophy. I’ll absolutely love it when the 49ers return from New Orleans with their 6th World Championship. Long live Kaepurnicus!
Gee.. Razor …
might wanna (at least) try to rein in your enthusiasism
(The smithers might get offended ! ..lol)
But, yeah … I think the Niners got this one !
If anyone is interested.
NFL Network airing replay of 49ers vs Packers tonight @5pm.
nice. I just tuned in
… right in time for the pick 6
less stressful this time right?
The real beauty of that pass Kaep laid out for Gore is that it came on 3rd and 10.
The pass to Gore was one of the most important plays in that game! It was impressive to see CK run out of the pocket and then throw a soft touch pass over the defender to Gore on the move! CK please beat the black birds this sunday.
Watched the game at a bar so I need to re-watch in peace. Note Lamichael James had a good sequence of plays at the end of the first half. He had a first down and picked up Clay Mathews on a blitz allowing CK to scramble for a first down.
great sequence by James. first the block on 52, then a reception to set up 2nd and short, then a nice run to convert the first down.
Everyone on defense has assignments and areas of responsibility.
But much depends on operating outside one’s responsibilities – helping out the other guy, converging on the ball carrier, etc. If you force a defense to be more “honest”, to not go beyond one’s own responsibility, there is a price to pay for that – primarily being less effective at attacking the ball-carrier.
Everyone criticized Green Bay for not “spying” on Kaepernick. but there is a price to pay for such spying, not to mention it takes preparation.
There is a lot of talk about Crabtree’s elitness. He is definitely very talented , but I need to see a larger sample size before I throw around the E word.
Niners need to add a complimentary receiver in the off season. Greg Jennings is a free agent.
Oh, I have been saying Greg Roman should involve the backs in the passing game. Gore caught 1 pass against the pack for 43 yards. What’s wrong with that?
LMJ should see 4-6 targets per game.
@Rollo,
Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams seemed to be playing pretty solid this year before they were hurt. Let’s not forget that this offense is looking solid with an older Randy Moss and Ted Ginn Jr. as the second and third receivers. I think it will be really exciting if we can keep the same group we had to begin the season going in to next season. An offense that features Crabtree, Davis, Manningham, Gore, Hunter, James, and Kyle Williams sounds like it could be right up in the top 5 or so of most talented skill players overall.
