Tom Gamble, the 49ers’ Director of Player Personnel, is being courted around the league to become a general manager. He’s already interviewed with the Jaguars, and the Jets, Browns and Chargers are reportedly interested in him as well. About a year ago, the Raiders expressed interest in him, too.
Gamble has a great reputation in the NFL. He was a college scout for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2004. Since 2010, Gamble has overseen both NFL and college scouting for the Niners, while Trent Baalke has been in charge of the roster.
Gamble stays behind the scenes. He does not talk to the media like Trent Baalke occasionally does.
We don’t know much about Gamble. Does anyone know anything they can share about him?
We do know that freshly-hired general managers tend to want to hire their own coaches. If Gamble does get a GM job, do you think he would hire any of the 49ers assistant coaches? Do you think Gamble would hire Greg Roman to be head coach, or John Morton to be offensive coordinator, or Jim Tomsula to be defensive coordinator? Do you think Gamble would sign Alex Smith if the 49ers cut him?
If another team hires Gamble, how much would the 49ers lose?

This guy has REALLY stayed in the background. I have not heard his name mentioned until this past week (lol).
Hopefully it’s an easy job replacement.
I live in Jacksonville Florida and all the local radio hacks are talking about him…
On another note I’m highly pissed off that the Niners/Jaguars will be played in London!!
Yea, but it wont be a “home” game like when they played Denver there 2 years ago.
Sorry, I noticed your from FL. I see what you meant now..my bad
Please take Roman not Tomsula
I agree 100%
+2
roger that.
We can only hope. OVER RATED
It depends on whom he hires as his head coach. He has say over that but I believe the HC typically, even with a controlling gm, has control over whose on his staff. But if he does hire Roman/Seeley/Fangio as his head coach, assuming he gets a GM position, I would expect some of the position coaches to be on the short list of coordinators. What about Geep Chryst? I would expect him to get as much play as an OC on one of these teams as Tomsula as a DC.
Gamble takes care of scouting FA’s from around the NFL and other leagues. He’s not involved with College scouting.
I read about an hour ago that he is the favorite to become the Jets GM, which means he will not be hiring a HC, at least this year, but that might lead to Alex Smith winding up in New York.
Rocket, you always correct others, even when you’re wrong.

While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts.
Grant,
Joel Patten is the Director of College Scouting. Gamble was promoted to the Director of player personnel in 2011. He doesn’t oversee College scouting. He was a scout before coming to the Niners but that isn’t his job anymore.
I would never post something on here I hadn’t verified by reading elsewhere, and I posted his position because you asked for info on the guy.
Gamble oversees college personnel and pro personnel. You’re wrong.
Just to finish that last thought, his job before being promoted in 2011 was scouting pro personnel.
Grant,
Here’s what you wrote:
Gamble has overseen both NFL and college scouting for the Niners
He does not oversee the College Scouting Dept. Joel Patten does. Gamble is Director of player personnel, there is a big difference.
He is Patten’s boss. You’re just wrong.
Grant it appears you are right. The job I was describing were his duties as Pro Personnel Director which was his job title until Feb. of 2011. Once he was promoted, the personnel duties included pro and College. My apologies.
I found this in a bio which explains it:
While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts. In his previous role, Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster.
Rocket a know-it-all? Say it ain’t so!
Losing Tom Gamble would be HUGE! ‘Better up the ante
The advice I always give my kids is, If you’re going to say something say it with conviction. People tend to believe other people or even follow people if they always sound like they know what they’re talking about. I’ll give this to you, Rocket. You said it with conviction.
There’s merit to that. When Unitas was asked about his play calling on 2 minute drills he just laughed and said (to paraphrase) he’d just step into the huddle and call almost any play with a confident voice and the other guys believed him and made it work.
Remember Quarterbacks calling their own plays? How quaint. That’s back when it was still a sport.
Jim Kelly running the K-gun……awesome.
Yeah I should have checked more articles before saying it with conviction. I had read Gambles job description awhile back and then saw a blurb on it again so I was pretty sure of the story. So much for that. When I’m wrong I’m wrong. Sorry for the misinformation guys.
There are some that post here all the time without even mental footnotes. It’s not a big deal and not sure why this one time was an issue.
It depends on where he goes. The Jets have already informed all prospective GMs that they cannot fire Ryan – in other words, the GM plays second fiddle to the coach, as is the case in Saint Louis, NE, now the Chiefs, etc. So, if Cable is as smart as people say he is, then he’ll only go somewhere that he has control. Going to the Jets would be career suicide. As for the Niners, they have a great structure in place and Baalke so far has known what he is doing. They’ll be fine. Ditto to the remarks about taking Roman… As for Alex, it would depend on which coach and what the team already has in place.
Good perspective Jed.
In the case Alex Smith, if he waits for the right move I believe that his window of chosing the right team begins to close.
I felt that he may have had a good fit in Cleveland but if the go with Kelly that window may close because Kelly will likely go for a “hybred QB” that is capable of operating out of the pocket.
I also thought that KC would have been a good fit for AS, but with A.Reid taking over there’s no guarantee that he goes with a ‘system type’ QB ingrained with a ‘safe mode’ offensive mentality.
The Jaguars are out of the picture if they go after T.Tebow.
The Jets may be the only team that could provide a good landing for AS, but once again, it will depend on R.Ryan who seems awkwardly enamoured with M.Sanchez.
Suddenly, Alex Smith’ football future looks shaky IMO with the above mentioned windows possibly closing.
TBD.
Hey Jed
I think that the fact that we(niners) have gone into the playoffs with the SAME COACHING STAFF should tell you that if we even recognize anyone on our sidelines next year besides JH it should be considered just short of miraculous. Every losing team, and even marginal winning team is going to be out like ‘black-Friday’ shoppers looking to nail a deal replacing their own ‘weak’ coaches. They’ll shred our coaching staff like a thresher in wheat. After that comes Alex Smith, Dashon Goldson, and every FA that we can’t afford to re-sign. Then Trent Baalke will REALLY earn his money. Just Remember what happened to Mike Nolan and Turner and McCarthy. WE’LL be out there shopping with the rest of them.
Tom Gamble is highly-regarded as one of the best talent evaluators in the entire league. With the 49ers, he has helped draft popular young 49ers that you see play now, such as Kendall Hunter and the beast in Aldon Smith. There are rumors right now that if NY wants Gamble, Gamble would want Jim Tomsula (Defensive line coach for the 49ers) to be head coach, but we know that’s not going to happen because Rex Ryan still has another year to turn it around.
Given that Gamble gets hired, what will probably happen is Rex Ryan doesn’t do well the following season, Tomsula who will be inserted as the defensive coordinator for the Jets will then take the head coaching job. We can definitely see that from happening.

I can’t tell if your joking or not. Jim Tomsula will not be a head coach. He’s a great guy and seemingly a very good d-line coach but his forte would not be as a head coach or even as a defensive coordinator. I know about his past in Europe and all that so you can leave that out. He’s just not equipped to be a head coach in the NFL.
I’m not so sure Houston,
He may not have the x’s and o’s background from an offensive standpoint, but I think he’s got the intangibles….and he’s a player’s coach. Guys simply love playing for him.
Gamble’s been out of the media eye, but he’s been a big part of the team’s renaissance. I think it’s a slam dunk that he goes, and I think he will (maybe not right away) end up with current 49ers coaches on his staff. The losses of Gamble and Tomsula would both be felt.
I think Gamble will take Roman to NY with him. Roman can either be the OC or if Gamble can fire Rex, he can give Roman the head coaches job. May as well take Alex as well and give him $6 mil a year and let him beat Sanchez out. that what I think may happen. Tomsula is not about to be a head coach. He has to be a coordinator 1st. He does not have the experience to be a head coach. That might be a bit much for him. I like Tomsula. He’s fiery and the defense loves that guy. I remember the press conferences he did for the one game he coached when Sing was fired. He was entertaining.
Any time hiring him would be taking on a gamble.
Just pray Fangio sticks around. The rest are easily replaced.
Per Schefter, Gamble turned down 2nd interview with Jacksonville. Said to be focusing efforts on Jets.
That keeps the 49ers’ coaches safe from Gamble at least.
Isn’t it your job to dig deeper and find out who Tom Gamble is and share it with us? I would like to know more. How about doing some reporting?
Second that… Grant, are you planning to do anything other than cut and paste from Maiocco?
Careful Tarzan, don’t want to get banned now do you?
Prime
Even you have been putting out more content of late than Grant. I’m just confused. He attended one of the best English programs in the country, grew up a Niners fan, lives with the Bay Area’s most opinionated sports journalist, and is in the middle of a two-week down period, yet we have seen nothing original from him.
What’s your deal, Grant?!
Axel Randy Primate,
What do you know about being banned?
Mr. E, you are right. Im not sure what the deal is.
Dalton had a chance to be great tonight and he choked…… He pulled a Smith and missed a wide open deep TD for a win….
You seem to have enjoyed this one…

After Alex’s great throw and catch by Vernon I stood up. I looked upwards, closed my eyes and soaked in the roar if the crowd.
Everyone once in their lifetime should have the opportunity to experience a moment like this…
When was the last time you stepped foot onto a professional sports field? Thats what I thought.
Bay,
It wasn’t so much that throw. Dalton was off target all day. The slant patterns he threw were off target and his throws to Gresham wer bad balls. He was throwing high and putting the ball in places where defenders couldn’t a hand on balls. How do you let Grove Quinn continually bat balls away that are intended for Gresham. Your tight end had 6-7 inches on the guy. Dalton looked slow trying to get out of the pocket.
It DOES come back around, doesn’t it?
