Young says the Ravens must try to hit and rattle Kaepernick

Steve Young spoke on KNBR Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the matchup between the 49ers’ offense and the Ravens’ defense.

Q: What do you think the Ravens will try to do against Kaepernick?

YOUNG: I interviewed Colin last week and I said, Colin, have you been hit hard? And he said no. Has anything gone wrong? He said, well, I had that one pitch in St. Louis, but yeah, it’s gone pretty well. I think the Ravens are going to try to change that narrative. If he is able to just be untouched whatever he does – you can’t let a young quarterback make it that easy. And that exposes them. The Ravens are going to have to take chances and try to get to him and rattle him in the run game, in the pass game.

This offensive line is the best since the 2000 Rams and before that the ’92 Cowboys. This offensive line is the best. No matter what your plan is, it’s not going to go tremendously well just because that offensive line isn’t going to allow it, but at some point you cannot let a young quarterback go untouched. You just can’t. And to not have that happen is going to be risky. And risks mean big opening. Colin could make three throws and the game could be over if they’re not careful.

The Baltimore Ravens defense is a bully defense. They love to get you fearful. The Ravens are going to be in a rare position where they know they can’t handle it all, but they’re still bullies. I guess they would love tight formations and Haloti Ngata taking three guys. And they also love people spread out. This is a dynamic defense. They’re great tacklers and they’re going to play with ferocity that the 49ers maybe haven’t seen in a while. The Ravens defense looks different, they act different, they’re cocky and they’ve got history behind them. They want to intimidate you, and if they can’t – they get frustrated and they get beat deep a couple of times and they go down 10-0 – like any bully, punch them in the nose and things get easier really fast.

    Easier said than done ..
    CK7 doesn’t get rattled ..

    (but Flacco might)

  2. Razoreater says:

Kaepurnicus has the clutch gene and he does not get rattled. Did not happen in college and it’s not going to happen in the NFL. If they try that sh!t they might get some personal fouls, and they most assuredly will smell like burnt toast when he’s done with them.

  3. Tha Grinch says:

Ck7 is stone cold..Hes a winner this wont be his last superbowl…Book it!

  4. NYniner says:

Sometimes I wonder if Young is down with the Niners

  5. Prime Time says:

We go out and hit people in the mouth!

  6. Sean in Canada says:

If throwing a pick 6 on your first drive in your first playoff start in your 8th career start doesn’t rattle you, I’m not sure anything will. Kaep is kool.

    • chicago49er says:

Sean good post! I believe in CK and hopefully he will shine on the biggest stage this Sunday

  7. Brodie2Washington says:

Recently I heard a former player (forgot name) mention that it’s within the rules to hit an option QB, it the QB is pretending to have the ball after he hands it off. If the QB is feigning being a runner, hitting him as hard as you can is legal. For some reason defenses are treating option QBs as if they are in the pass pocket. A big mistake.

So… instead of having defenders passively “spy”, he said defenders should just shoot the play side gap and hit the QB every play, whether that have the ball or not.

Lets hope the Super Bowl is not the day defenses finally realize killing option QBs is a legal play.

    • Big Suede says:

I don’t know if you have been watching Kaepernick much when he hands the ball off- but Kaep doesn’t fake like he is running. I think that is purposeful- to be hit, you need to make moves toward the line of scrimage. He is just watching what the linebackers are doing- there is really little deception going on.

Also- I dont know if you or Steve Young have noticed- But Kaep is the size of a tight end- he is only 15 pounds lighter than Vernon davis. He is not the type of QB that will be hurt easy.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

I noticed Kaepernick’s size (and speed and arm) in his spectacular game upsetting BCS contender Boise State. In fact I wish the press sould stop saying he’s 6’4″. Kaep is closer to 6’5″.

I was absolutely thrilled when the 49ers drafted the “Turlock Tornado.”

      • Big Suede says:

I did a little dance during that pick. I found it odd that Cam Newton and Kaepernick where so similar physically- and Kaep had the better arm- but Newton got all the press and Kaep was rated as a 4th rounder.

        east coast bias is real.

      • Razoreater says:

That was a good game against Boise St.

      • claude balls says:

        east coast bias is real.

So is the SEC’s superior to the WAC.

We all should be happy that the football world underestimated Kaepernick in 2011, whatever the reason. Had he been properly valued by any other team, he likely wouldn’t be a 49er.

      • claude balls says:

        * So is the SEC’s superiority to the WAC.

I swear I typed that correctly the first time.

  8. Brodie2Washington says:

If I were a pro defensive coordinator (based on my extensive experience working in a rose nursery), I’d rush odd numbers at Kaep.

Sometimes I would rush only three, drop an extra guy back, and make him try to hit receivers other then the primary and secondary. Then I’d change it up and bring a 5th pass rusher.

Most (and maybe all) of Kaepernick’s INTs were because he did not see underneath coverage. DCs should try to goad him into throwing outs while rolling an extra DB underneath.

    • msclemons67 says:

*Harbaugh voice* “Stop giving the opponent ideas! I’m sure John has a spy reading this blog!”

If the 49ers lose I will hold you personally responsible.

I will now remove my tongue from my cheek.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

I also heard on good authority that Kaepernick hates it when defenders wear their helmets backwards. My insider also said Kaepernick falls apart when defensive backs curl into a fetal position while murmuring “find a happy place… find a happy place.”

    • claude balls says:

      @ Brodie:

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

What is the advantage of bringing an odd number of pass rushers versus bringing an even number?

      • NinersRoc says:

@Claude, I dig the Homer Simoson reference lol!

        @Brodie,
I would imagine, the Niners are ready for all blitz packages. I also think that they won’t too many too new things than they’ve been doing the past 5/6 games. I think our offense tries to punch this defense in both the nose and the gut right from the get go. They’ll be thinking twice about blitzing after CK beats them deep.

Also, my prediction is we end their blitzing with LaMichael James’ first huge run if the season off an read option draw

      • hightop says:

Claude -probably some odd Masonic reference -one has to know the secret handshake to unfurl the numerological code!

  9. Tha Grinch says:

Off subject..Does anyone else think Ray Ratto is a complete turd? I do..I would love to tell this idiot what I think of him face to face..

    • Neal says:

Yes he is also horrible on radio, takes him a minute to finish a setence, and alot of silence when he talks, quite .pompous

    • drsgrosse says:

Hey Grinch: Ratto is a terrible writer — lousy style, superficial research, etc. However, we can all (including you) do without the turd-idiot stuff. Name calling diminishes the caller more than it does the callee.

    • 49erGirl says:

Yes…can’t stand him. Every once in a while what he has to say is interesting – that’s the most positive thing I can think of.

  10. Crab15 says:

Kap still has 2.5 years remaining on his 5.2 mil contract. When Niners win Super Bowl I wonder how fast he gets a new contract and how much? It’s good to be Kap!

  11. Nick says:

Who is a better passer right now?

Who are the 27 dumb fcuks that voted for Flacco?

  12. 49er4life says:

Flacco barely completes over 55% of his passes, jus cause he has a cannon doesn’t make him a better passer! CK7 is a better passer than most already, including flacco, in 2 years he’ll be the best and most football player in the nfl let alone passer!

    • 49er4life says:

      MosT feared* ^^

    • George says:

I agree with your assessment of Kaepernick. Jim Harbaugh was quoted as telling his father that he thought CK was the best player in that draft, not only the best qb. He’s already established himself as one of the best players in the league.

  13. Jack Hammer says:

YOUNG: I interviewed Colin last week and I said, Colin, … Has anything gone wrong?

Yeah, I threw a pick 6 on my first postseason possession, but came right back down the field and had a game for the ages. Then I struggled early against Atlanta, but led the biggest come from behind road playoff victory in franchise history.

I hope the Ravens try to focus their attention on hitting and rattling Kaep. In his short time as a starter he has faced a lot of adversity, and handled it all like a seasoned veteran. Focus your attention on stopping him and the rest of the offense opens up.

The 49ers are going to win by double digits on Sunday….

    • George says:

Roman’s saving the read-option for the playoffs is like releasing the Kraken.

    • drsgrosse says:

      Jack:

Do you think the Niners might try to take advantage of Lewis’ age? He looks smart, but very slow.

      • Heidelberg Slim says:

They’ll run him sisde to side and force Moss deep nearby him. When the legs go the spirit follows. Lewis will be gassed before the half. Then Davis will run right past him for two or three easy TDs…

      • Jack Hammer says:

        drs,

They are going to make Lewis have to play in space, advantage 49ers. The Ravens LB’s are going to be hard pressed to cover Davis, Walker, and the RB’s.

I expect to see another big day from VD, and Kaep. The 49ers offense is the most balanced of any team the Ravens have faced this postseason.

  14. 49er4life says:

I’m guessing 10 or more points! This offense is running smoother than ever, with Kap being so confident, talented, competitive, and most importantly smart, with gore an LJ running, and VD, Crab and Moss catching lasers, what exactly can u gear up to stop if you’re the Ravens? The only way the 49ers lose this game is by multiple turnovers leading to either the Ravens D scoring, or immediate points by their offense! With our already young stout defense comin off 2 weeks of rest and preparation, I don’t see the Ravens scoring more than 17 points! 28-17 49ers!

  15. Jerod Brown says:

    Grant,

I may be wrong but I think I remember you mentioning LMJ and Kap running the read option in the redzone back in the beginning of the season; maybe even preseason. If so, well done. Who woulda thought that those two would be running it in the Superbowl!?!?

    • FredDeanBuiltMyHotrod says:

I thought that this would be the bread and butter of the offense when Kap took over. It took a half a season, but, lo and behold, Pistol read-option!

      • Jerod Brown says:

I was a little surprised that once the change was made it took so long. I’m still curious to see how teams will attack it and try to stop it next year. It seems a little more reliable and legit than the WIldcat.

      • FredDeanBuiltMyHotrod says:

The Pistol offense isn’t a new concept. It is actually based on the Wing T formation, only the quarterback is lined up behind the center, instead of the guard, and the running back(s) are lined up behind the qb. When Chris Ault was implementing the Pistol, he was attempting to find a hybrid between the modern college spread, and the pro-style I formation. What he came up with was nothing short of genius.

When I was living in Idaho, I had the opportunity to see Kaepernick’s coming out party against the Boise State Broncos. Yes the Broncos won, in a shootout, 69-67. Kap, if I remember correctly, threw for over 400 yards, and ran for an additional 100 or so. After that, I was absolutely fascinated with the Pistol formation, and guessed that it was only a matter of time before this offense was adopted by an NFL team.

  16. Darren says:

400 yards, and he can only throw 267 yards? CK has a long ways to go.

  17. 49er4life says:

If attempt 40 to 60 passes every game like most Qbs who throw for 300 I’m guessing he could Darren the troll!!

  18. 49er4life says:

    Kap*. ^^

  19. Darren says:

OK 49er4life, what about the games when Montana, Young, and Garcia did in fact throw high PA/PC and for X amount of yards? SHould we put an * next to Barry Bond’s homerun baseball? If you are saying that no QB should throw 300 yards, that’s like saying a baseball game should be 1 to 0 and not high scoring.

    • FredDeanBuiltMyHotrod says:

Again, talk to the members of the 70s Steelers, and see if they agree with you that a qb needs to throw 300 yards a game for the team to be successful. Hell, ask the 2001 Ravens. Or the 2005 Steelers, for that matter.

  20. Darren says:

Fine then, let’s just snap the ball to Frank Gore each time. Why have a QB then? Let’s just have high school and pop warner plays on the 49ers and see how far it’ll get them. Then watch a WR like Crabtree want out when he’s not being given the opportunity to catch the pass. We don’t even have a QB in CK. We have a RB and that’s bad.

    • FredDeanBuiltMyHotrod says:

Do you even watch football, let alone what you type?

    • Neal says:

Did not realize that Nappa State mental hospital, allows it’s patients to use the computer, your a patletic soul. Please read football for dummies 1000 times before you come back on here, along with your depression meds.

  21. 49er4life says:

Darren youre a dumb troll period, that alone gives your arguments no creditbilty or merit! Hating a QB who led his team to a Super Bowl is one thing, but saying jus flat dumb crap is jus idiotic! You want Alex smith right??? That’s your QB right?? Or your boyfriend? Hell I don’t know! Against .500 teams or better, Alex has a QB rating of 81 with 4 Tds and 4 ints while averaging 188 yards in those games! Kap 12tds 4ints passer rating of 106 averaging 240 passing yards a game! That’s why we’re in the super bowl period!

    • Darren says:

49er4life, QBR is like BCS. It should not be allowed. If all QBs were to go QBR, say goodbye to the Pro Bowl as nobody votes for QBR QBs. They votes for ones that can throw the ball. You got in the Superbowl because 2 teams flat out quit and had a stinker of a defense. Since CK is the future, I want him to throw more passes. I’m tired of 16 for 21 for X yards. Alex Smith was being held back and you’ll see on his new team he was held back.

  22. Darren says:

CK is the future, I have to accept it. I only wish he passed more. I wish he had more leadership. I wish he wouldn’t kiss his bicep. It’s really very hard to accept this when alex Smith did nothing wrong to lose his job like this. I hope the 49ers release him because they won’t let Smith go to Arizona.

  23. 49er4life says:

It’s a reason Alex Smith was held back he can’t throw lol, QB rating is very accurate! Passing yards don’t measure Anything, QBs with high passing yards are either trailing in a game or jus don’t have a very reliable running game! A team with balance only needs a QB who can make playas and score touchdowns! Thus the 49ers and Ck.. A marriage made in heaven! Alex’s smith best 2 seasons are still very average, with all due respect to the former number one pick! Darren your jus a trolling hater oooooor Alex is your boyfriend, I say a mixture of both, but who am I to judge!

  24. 49er4life says:

Darren find me a game where Alex’s score 4 Tds, how about that!

  25. Darren says:

49er4life, find me a game where CK threw for 300 yards and won the game. That’s 300 yards, not this sissy 233, 267, has to be what Schaub threw, what Peyton threw, what Brees threw, what RG3 threw, what Brady threw. Never mind touchdowns. Did that get CK voted onto the pro bowl? NO. You know why? Fans want a QB that throws, not QBR.

    • michael says:

@Darren:if Colin would have played a full year he probably would have been a Pro-Bowler he will show that next year on his way to back-to-back SuperBowl wins. Just go back into your moms basement and read your Playboys because you have no clue about football. By the way when Sir Alex is the quarterback for the Chiefs next year become a fan of the Chiefs.

  26. 49er4life says:

Yep Darren your a retard cause I’m sure all does Qbs would trade the pro bowl for the super bowl, I want a QB that wins super bowls and scores Tds, not rack up meaningless passing yards lol

  27. Darren says:

Wow, and your post shouldn’t be deleted because…? Well, Montana, Young, and Garcia are a lot better than CK and he’ll never match up to either of them. I want a Qb that can throw, not be held back. You’ll see how conservative Harbaugh is, just like Mariucci. Enjoy the 6 to 3 SUperbowl with dismal ratings.

    • FredDeanBuiltMyHotrod says:

Enjoy your absolute lack of football knowledge, along with the taste of that foot in your mouth.

  28. Jason says:

Grant, Peter King CNN SI just wrote an article confirming his pick as the Ravens. It would be interesting to get your take from it. He discusses how basically due to the Niners D imploding in second half in New England and JS and AS recording no sacks and what happened in ATL, Flacco is going to use that as a blueprint against us. Your thoughts?
    Jason

    • Brotha Tuna says:

With apologies to Jason, since his question was directed at Grant, but didn’t the Niners win those two games? THAT’s the model to use? If I were the OC I’d look closely at Rams and Seahawks (#2) & Giants games.
