2014 Super Bowl odds: Patriots 6-1, 49ers 7-1, Seahawks 12-1

Here are the current favorites to win the 2014 Super Bowl.

Patriots: 6-1

49ers: 7-1

Broncos: 8-1

Packers: 10-1

Texans: 10-1

Seahawks: 12-1

Steelers: 14-1

Ravens: 14-1

Falcons: 16-1

Saints: 16-1

Giants: 20-1

I’m surprised the Patriots are the early Super Bowl favorites. The oddsmakers must believe they’re the best team when they’re fully healthy. Do you agree?

I think the Seahawks and Giants’ odds are too low. The Seahawks are one of the best teams in the league, and when Hakeem Nicks is healthy, the Giants are too.

How would you rank the 2014 Super Bowl favorites?

  1. Foamingatdamouth says:

The odds have come out too soon to be relevant. We still need to see how free agency, the draft & offseason trades play out, before we can get a good idea of who should be favored.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

The Giants are about right for a team with only 17 regular season wins over the last 2 years and who just cut their leading rusher.

  3. BigP says:

Tom Brady is a descending player, but they will easily make the playoffs because of their dysfunctional division. I really believe the Niners have a great shot at getting back to the Super Bowl next year, barring injury of course.

  4. Coffee's for closers says:

Not sure what it’s being based upon when the fate of so many positions on those teams are completely unknown. After the draft and free agency some of these teams could have completely different odds, seems a bit premature.

  5. CK=ELITE says:

If the niners add either bowe, Wallace, harvin on offense they are going to be scary on offense! Then add 1 starting caliber corner and more depth on the d line and we are set. I believe this loss will strike a fire into haurbaugh and Balke that they will have the mentality to acquire exactly what they need. People, a big trade will happen this off season involving the niners and it does not involve Alex smith. My prediction is Percy harvin for a second and fourth rnd picks. Alex for a third to the browns and revis to San Fran for 2 third rnd picks and a 2014 2nd. Lets tango with that in 2013 faithful……

    • Tha Grinch says:

That just gave me the shivers……

    • MidWestNiner says:

So you want an injury-prone diva on a Jim Harbaugh team in Harvin? Bowe has some scouts worried about the baggage he carries. And with Crabtree a free agent after next season, it makes no sense to go after a WR like Wallace who will want a huge contract. I think a WR out of this upcoming draft makes more sense under the circumstances.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“So you want an injury-prone diva on a Jim Harbaugh team in Harvin?”

Wasn’t that the knock on Crabtree prior to this year?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Yeah, but Harvin is on record for blowing up at his coaches and irritating his teammates in the process.

      • msclemons67 says:

In Harvin’s defense, Singlebraincell is one of the coaches in Minnesota.

  6. Razoreater says:

I would put the Seahawks ahead of the Texans, but I’m not a professional oddsmaker.

  7. bayareafanatic says:

Most of the mocks had us grabbing a FS in the first round. Now many of them have us grabbing WR Tavon Austin. That’s interesting. We better get a DT or a CB out of the Alex Smith trade though….

    • The problem I have with drafting a wr in the late first rnd is that they are so hit and miss. I m not saying that Jenkins was a bad pick but we at that position dont have the luxury to wait two or three years for a position that we need instant impact at. I would rather trade what is necessary for a wideout of the caliber of a percy harvin.. He would be the perfect fit at wideout for our squad. He is a GREAT returner and wideout that has homerun ability from anywhere on the field. If this guy is truly available we need to do what we can to acquire him.. CK with this cat and our other weapons would be over the top. Baulke has the picks, make it happen ASAP….

      • By the way I m also CK=Elite. I m having problems with my email account so i had to create another one. Anyway I m a die hard niner fan that thinks about Niner football all year long and was devasted like most about that loss. But with that being said, I m thrilled about the direction of this team and excited for the future. I bleed red and gold like most on this cite and look forward to more off season conversations with the Faithful…

First three rounds :Datone Jones DE-(1);Brandon Williams NT(2);Justin Hunter WR-(3a);Darius Slay-CB-(3b);D J Swearinger FS (3c)

      • hightop says:

        Con’t- 4th B Schwenke-C; 5th Matt Scott QB;Duke Williams SS;6th Dustin Hopkins K;Eric Martin DE;7th- R Burkhead RB;Zack Zudfeld TE ;J kruger DL; J collins WR

  8. Alex Smith for President says:

In his final interview, Coach Jim Harbaw said something about the glass being half empty. Speaking of which… what should we make of his violent disposal (spiking into a trashcan) of the half empty Diet Coke… as he walked into a postgame interview the night of the Super Bowl….?

Being a half-empty beverage in the hands of Coach Jim can be a dangerous sitution. It seems that he had lost his taste for one of his favorites.

Remember, pre-heart procedure: five Diet Cokes per day….
    Wham!!! Not any more.

    • Hello 49er says:

Ha ha, Harbaw. Just like the song goes about being a horse’s yeah, yeah, yeah if you know what I mean. I can’t help but laugh at the song about Harbaugh. Harbaugh has a lot to learn as coaching, like don’t invite bad karma by benching good football players for ones that didn’t have a hot hand.

  9. the k says:

odds have all to do the with money bet.certain teams(new england) will always get heavy play. odds have nothing to do with who is the better team

  10. Steelematic says:

Quetion Grant. Do you believe the sehawks are better than the Niners? I dont and this isnt a homer talking. I believe we should be the favorite. Especially with a chip on the shoulders of the hc and the qb

    • Hello 49er says:

I believe the Seahawks are better. They are just a couple of WRs away and a solid D away from contention. Seattle and SF will both match up better. Wilson is up and coming as he and Kaepernick will have tough matchups.

  11. Brodie2Washington says:

I completely agree. Seahawks and Giants way too low.

Imagine the 49ers when healthy… Haralson and Dobbs means a rested and ready Aldon Smith in the post season. And how would the playoffs have gone if Williams, Manngingham and Hunter were healthy? And who knows how the rookie OLB from Notre Dame would have played if not for the knee injury.

I’d match up a healthy 49ers against any other teams healthy roster.

  12. Hello 49er says:

This is way too soon. Nobody knows how FA will go, the draft, and what losses each team will endure. Then factor in unexpected injuries. Seattle got off lucky along with the Rams. But I would expect Seattle and St. Louis to compete hard.

  13. exgolfer says:

    Atlanta and Seattle will regress.

  14. michael says:

    Grant,
I heard the Vikings are one of the teams mentioned for Alex Smith, I dont think they are but how about Smith for Harven. I think Harven is a probowl caliber but he is injured alot which brings his value down plus he may be a cancer which also would bring down the value. I lived in Florida at the time he played for the Gators and was a season ticket holder and I dont recall him having any problems in the locker room with coaches or players.

    • Ed from AZ says:

HEY, I think that’s the one potential trade partner everyone is forgetting about. The Vikings aren’t exactly “set” with Ponder, and I think Alex Smith at QB would actually improve their team. He’d know exactly when to go to a running play or when to take advantage of the Play-Action pass with Peterson at RB. Good fit!

  15. drsgrosse says:

Oddsmakers set lines according to how they think the public will bet, not according to who they think is better. You should know this before venturing out as a professional sportswriter.

  16. Razoreater says:

    This might work:

    1. Shariff Floyd (DT/DE)
    2. Phillip Thomas (FS)
    3. Chase Thomas (OLB)
    3. Darius Slay (CB)
    3. Cobi Hamilton (WR)
    4. Brandon Williams (NT)
    5. Ryan Otten (TE)
    5. Dustin Hopkins (K)

    • hightop says:

Like the Chase Thomas pick-I’ve been on to Darius Slay-watch for this guy fella’s value pick!-Brandon Williams at 4th would be a coup-I like Otten alot Razor and to me Dustin Hopkins is worth a reach above the 7th!

    • Spaceborn says:

I would love Floyd, but he’ll be gone by the time the 49ers pick. Probably gone before the 20th pick and more likely by #15.

  17. ninermd says:

What are the odds of the 49ers trading for percey harvin?
News in Minnesota is that they are pursuing a trade because of an outburst towards their coach.
Would it be a good gamble? I think so. As long as he doesn’t go to Seattle if not us.

    • Jack Hammer says:

And the asking price is said to be a 2nd round pick. The only sticking point is he is in the last year of his rookie deal.

I say that with all the picks you have this year go for it.

      • bayareafanatic says:

He also has a history of migraines and huge attitude problems…

      • Jack Hammer says:

Moss had a bad history too and it went ok here. The difference is Moss is past his prime and Harvin is just getting to his.

      • Bray says:

Kap, LMJ and Harvin running the pistol? Oh my!

Can you say PA to the right, with a quick screen back to left for Harvin. That much speed in a backfield would be a nightmare for DE and LB’s!

      • ninermd says:

I like the idea jack. You know Seattle will be in the hunt for him. Please don’t go to Seattle.

He seems like a younger Moss. Downfield speed, will go up an get it, runs good routes. Just a lot younger and almost just as cheap. Gotta think Baalke is entertaining the idea. Plus it gives us more depth at the wr position. Because the last two years the wr position injuries have hurt us.

  18. MWNiner says:

    I agree with Coffee …
it’s a bit premature to be thinking about next year’s Super Bowl ..
let alone.. the odds of the Niners making it !
Last year, the Niners were very fortunate to return all eleven starters
    on Defense ..
We can’t count on that happening again..
In fact, with all the draft picks .. (not sure how many) .. we have..
plus some guys looking for greener pastures, and fatter paychecks..
I got a feeling we may be looking at a different team next season ..

Still … I’m excited at the prospects !

  19. Jack Hammer says:

Vick staying in Philly for another year.

  20. barleyfreak says:

odds have all to do the with money bet.certain teams(new england) will always get heavy play. odds have nothing to do with who is the better team

Exactly. This point is apparently lost on most who think this is a rating of best teams/most likely. It is in fact odds based on expected betting.

  21. Coffee's for closers says:

Grant, for someone who doesn’t gamble you sure seem interested in odds.

    • old coach says:

Coffee come on its football gambling is part of the culture. Grant may not be a gambler but many of his readers enjoy making a wager or two.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

I don’t know any smiley faces for tongue n cheek so I have to hope that Grant can tell when I’m just teasing.

“So you want an injury-prone diva on a Jim Harbaugh team in Harvin?”

Wasn’t that the knock on Crabtree prior to this year?

    Hammer,
    Two different health issues IMO.
Crabtree had correctable surgery on his foot, while Harvin’ headaches are a chronic and ongoing problem.

Harvin would be a good fit if he can find some kind of medical control of his migraines.

We either go after Bowe or Revis. They may be had with top heavy incentives and prorated contracts. Given their current teams and the fact that they have been in the league for about 4 seasons, they might be willing to lower their contract demands for a chance at a possible Superbowl run.

  23. terryc says:

New England with no defense? I don’t think so. Seattle? During the off season DC’s are gonna make sure little Russell is going to come down to Earth! Green Bay? Again, where’s the D?

  24. Jim Schwartz for Vice President says:

    note to Coach Harbaw:

IT IS GOING TO BE A LONG OFF-SEASON THIS YEAR.
    A VERY LONG OFF-SEASON.
