Jim Harbaugh held a press conference at the Scouting Combine on Friday. Here is a transcript, courtesy of the 49ers.
How does it feel to get back into the process of evaluating football players?
“Good. Good, good. Feels like get the paw in the ground, scratching, ready to go.”
Have you had a chance to talk to your brother a little, or at all?
“Yeah, I’ve talked to him.”
Did you talk about the game?
“A little bit. Talked a little bit about the game, and some other things.”
How do you think that game, or does it affect your relationship at all?
“Don’t think it affects, other than stronger.”
Do you think it’s stronger?
“Yeah.”
Why is that?
“I don’t know. We’ve just got a strong relationship. And it just always seems to get stronger. Very close.”
Anything that he said that you didn’t know from his perspective about that game?
“No.”
Do you think it’s fascinating that we’re all fascinated by your relationship with your brother after being on that stage to ask questions?
“I think it’s a fascinating thing, if you use your word. What more can I tell you? Tell me what you want me to put into the, what you want me to tell you.”
Did you guys discuss facets of the game?
“Yeah, we discussed some facets of the game, and some other football talk.”
Is it easier losing to your brother, or no, or different that you did it together?
“No, no it’s not easier.”
Where does the line get drawn on sharing information about strategy and stuff?
“I don’t think we really shared a whole lot of strategy throughout the course of the season. It’s definitely gotten less the longer I’ve been in the league.”
You have 14 draft pick this year. Do you see 14 spots on your roster for that many rookies?
“Do I see it? Do I envision it? Is it possible? It’s certainly possible. And we’re here to draft the best football players that we can. And we feel good about having that many picks.”
Do you think that’ll make things more active on draft weekend?
“Will it make us more active on draft weekend? I think you certainly assume that it would. You compare to last year, seven picks last year, we’d be more active on the draft this year. I think wouldn’t be going out on a limb by saying we’d be more active this draft. Yeah, I think that’s true.”
What did QB Colin Kaepernick do at the combine to really catch your eye?
“Quite a few things. I thought it was things that we’d seen on tape showed up in the workout. His competitive nature, for sure. He threw. He did everything at the combine. Interview was outstanding. So, several things.”
Based on Colin’s comeback in New Orleans and Atlanta, what are just some thoughts on his kind of work ethic or what he’ll be able to do going forward?
“Well, I think it’s one of his assets, one of the things that make him who he is. It’s one of the things that’s made him who he is. He has a great attitude. He has a great work ethic. And people that have a great attitude and great work ethic, there’s very few circumstances or situations that can keep you from being good. I think that goes for anybody. Maybe there’s a percentage of really bad luck in there that I’m not factoring in. But, darn near 100 percent when you’ve got a great ethic and a great attitude, things are going to work out really well.”
He took one week off before resuming training. Do you want to see guys take longer time off, or is that OK with you to kind of jump back in that quickly?
“That’s OK. I think some are and aren’t needed. But, I don’t know that it’s anything set amount. This is a job playing professional football that’s at least 11 month, or close to 12 month a year job. You don’t want to get out of shape. It’s easier to just stay in shape than it is to get out of shape, and then try to get back in shape.”
When you talked about adding a single player, is it more about what others have told you or for you, can you tell by sitting down and looking in that player’s eyes what he has Sundays?
“No, I mean, I think there’s certainly a part of being with somebody for a half-an-hour or 15 minutes or an hour or two that you can know somebody. Some people have that ability to, ‘Boy, I had a 30 minute conversation with them, I walk away feeling like I really, really know that person.’ Others you can’t. And I think you’ve got to validate a meeting with a person or two or three conversations with their track record, their relationships with other people at their school, their teammates, their coaches, their trainers, equipment managers, teachers, professors, their family. People usually leave a track record of success, or failure, or success and failure. So, I think both. Yeah. But a look in the eye, the gleam in the eye test, I think it’s definitely a lot more than that. Or, I don’t possess the ability to just look into the eye and know somebody, or claim to, yeah.”
Did you ever have a prospect where you kind of know going in, you know his background, you’ve got that indication from scouts [inaudible]. What was the effect on that when a guy isn’t true according to an interview about the things he’s asked?
“Oh, somebody that’s not truthful. I mean, that’s big to me. I’m a big fan of the Judge Judy show. When you lie in Judy Judy’s courtroom, it’s over. Your credibility is completely lost. You stand no chance of winning that case. So, I learned that from her. And, it’s very powerful, and true because if somebody does lie to you, then how can you ever trust anything that they ever say after that? And then [former President] Ronald Reagan, another person of great wisdom and advice, ‘Trust, but we will verify.’”
Do you perceive the pain of that loss quickly washing away? Is there something to be said for holding on to it, knowing what it’s like to get that close and then use it as motivation?
“I think I saw this in the last two, three weeks, a lot of people want you to look at it through a certain lens – the, you got there but it wasn’t as good as you wanted to lens, or if you get to that game, you’ve got to win that game or else, I don’t know what the or else is. And several other lenses, like it was a successful season or it wasn’t or either team could have won it etc., etc., it could go on for a while. But the lens that I choose to use, that we choose to use, is look at yourself, where can you get better? We’re forging ahead with a new day. It’s a new day today, paws in the ground and we’re attacking it with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. See if we can’t make today better than yesterday and be a little bit better tomorrow than we were today. So that’s our attitude with it.”
Is Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o not draftable to you because of the trust factor?
“No, I wouldn’t say that.”
How much time passed between the game and you and your brother talking and do you remember who reached out to who?
“Who actually dialed the phone? I called him.”
You mentioned the 14 draft picks. Can you imagine that many rookies making your roster?
“Yeah, that was asked a little earlier. Can I imagine that? Sure. Anything is possible. But we’ve also got a lot of good players on our team and just as a point of fact, we take all the players we’ve got on our team and love to see them develop and coach them to be the best players that they can be, so that there’s no way that 14 players could come in and make the roster. And then simultaneously, we’re going to go find 14 players that can come in and beat out those 14 of our guys that are currently on the team. That’s working at the same time. It’s that iron sharpening iron effect. So I can imagine it both ways.”
In conversations with Alex Smith [inaudible]:
“Well, I think that it will be a process. That’s the reality of it. That’s the way it will play out over the next so many weeks and months.”
Thoughts on what you’re looking for from WR A.J. Jenkins heading in to next season. You got Colin Kaepernick working out with him. What are you looking to see from him heading into next season?
“Same thing I’m looking for for myself, continual effort and continual improvement.”
Before you got to San Francisco, QB Alex Smith wasn’t really going [inaudible]. Was it something that you guys did with him? Was it the play book? How did it happen?
“That list of things, ‘A’ I don’t have that in front of me and ‘B’ I think the main thing is that Alex is an excellent football player. Alex is really playing the best football of his career the last two years. We think we got the best quarterback situation in the National Football League, feel strongly about that. Again, that’ll be a process that plays out. Alex Smith continuing to be a 49er or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months. Those are the two possibilities, most likely possibilities.”
Your first draft, how did you go about being objective with Stanford players?
“How did I go about being objective? Really the same way that you’re objective with any player watching the tape. Most all of the evaluation is really done off the production and the tape.”
So you’re saying that the release of Alex Smith is unlikely?
“That’s unlikely.”
[Inaudible].
“A couple of days. Two, three days, four days, something like that.”

I would have payed to listen in on that conversation. Harbaugh is good, but he’s given the 49ers their first Super Bowl loss in six attempts. If he wants to be great, he needs to erase that loss with a win next year and establish the dynasty. Speaking for myself, it was a very painful and disappointing loss.

Baloney. He doesn’t “need” to do anything except his best. Like all of you are winning your own personal super Bowls… jokers.
Baloney to that. He needs to do his best better than anybody.
Either trade Smith or release him. The team needs that money for other areas of the roster.
MWN
They will not release him. He’ll give them insurance and will not be too big of a hit on the salary cap. Smith may not be happy with that scenario, but oh well. Besides, I think the team will get a 3rd round pick in 2014 if they keep AS next season and he leaves the year after.
Nick,
Does this mean we get DS back in a packaged deal? (lol)
I don’t think that AS comes back because he wants to start fresh and have the opportunity to be a Starter.
Alex was subjected to a ‘hostile takeover’ for lack of a better term.
Why should/would he trust this Org with his future?
If I were AS, my thinking would be enough is enough!
The window for Alex’ services is very small in my opinion.
The one team that may have a sincere interest IMO is Cleveland.
Harbaugh is simply setting off smoke-screens by saying that the team is willing to keep AS. Some other team will see this as their slim opportunity to get AS and make a trade for him.
Harbaugh is the master con man when it comes to spinning a story about one of his players when he has too.
@AES
let’s hope he’s half as good as Andy Reid.
It doesn’t bother me whether Smith would be happy or not. What does bother me is that money could to say resign Goldson, Walker or RJF. Even better, it could be u used to extend Crabtree. Keeping a backup of any position at $8.5 million is ridiculous.
Nick – How are you bro?…Be patient Baalke and wait for a 3rd rounder from Clev or KC for Alex.
First Skip Bayliss, now Nick. I may need to rethink my prediction….
AES,
Lol, Good one. A trade is the more likely scenario.
Crab,
I’m doing well. It took me a few weeks to recover from that loss. BTW, I was in your neck of the woods last week. I took a few days off and took the kids to Legoland. On the way back, I wanted to make a stop at Westwood, but didn’t get a chance. The UCLA campus must have changed a lot since I was in the late 90′s.
Jason Cole is reporting from the combine that the Kansas City Chiefs are the team most interested in trading for Alex Smith.
It’s also being reported by Gregg Rosenthal that the Browns are trying to trade Weeden.
this could bode well for a alex smith trade….hope it happens.
Alex for Weeden plus a 3rd round pick would be great. We’d get a draft pick and a better QB.
He’s a first round draft pick that is being traded after his rookie season Nick. Plus he is one year older than Smith. How does that make him better?
@ MidWestNiner:
Nick’s just trolling.
Wow, wouldn’t Weeden come with a big contract? I know the rookie deals are smaller now but……..For a backup?
Razor
He has given the 49ers their first Super Bowl game since 1994. So if they don’t win it this year do you want a new coach?
No, I love the guy…but it’s like when you go off to boot camp for 3 months and come back and find out you’re wife cheated on you. You forgive her because you love her, but you’ll always have that scar.
If the Army wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one. I was single and cut all my relationship ties with females when I went in. That way I had nothing to lose at home and could focus on the mission at hand.
thats dumb!!!
Are you saying those with a wife or husband can’t focus on the mission?
are you sure you didn’t become single because dadt was repealed.
Ok
I don’t blame coach for not winning, I am disappointed, but I think the future is bright and I know the coaches will work hard.
Harbaugh is not the reason that the 49ers lost the Super Bowl. The bee ess officiating had as much to do with it as anything. The 108 yard kickoff return where Bruce Miller was held to the point that his jersey was being pulled over his shoulder pads, and the blatant no-call on Jimmy Smith, which he now admits to holding Crabtree, cost 14 points alone. Kaepernick changed two of the plays inside the 7 yard line on the last drive, and we may never know, but I’d bet my last dollar that one was a slant to Vernon Davis. QB draw would be my other guess.
Remember, this was a talented team that had under-performed for YEARS, until Harbaugh showed up and changed the culture overnight, with virtually the same cast of players from the year before. The 49ers need a handful of players: WR threat to line up opposite of Crabtree (which they might already have in Jenkins), some DL depth, an elite CB, and a new kicker, and this team could be scary good for years.
NFL is fixed same as the NBA…
The refs weren’t the ones who put the Niners in a 22 point hole. The refs didn’t fumble the ball on a great drive. The refs weren’t the ones who lined up in an illegal formation on the first play of the game, nor were they the ones who made Joe Flacco very comfortable behind his OL. They also weren’t the ones who needed a second thirty minute break (lights going out) in order to finally get something going. And they weren’t the ones who called three straight passes to Crabtree on the right side of the field. Blame the refs all you want, but the Niners cost themselves that game.
word
I’ve never seen a winning team (or a losing one for that matter) keep 14 draft picks. I suspect the 49ers will try to do some trading up in this draft and maybe even for picks in next year’s draft. They are certainly not going to keep Alex and pay a backup that much money. I think it is most likely he’ll be traded to the Browns or the Chiefs (or Bills) and with some competition for him, I think he’ll bring a No. 3 pick (or even a No. 2 pick if the team can defer it to 2014, which I think they’d be happy to do). Don’t know how much the team really likes Tolzien, but I think you’ll also see them draft another young QB in any case (Barkley?) Gee, if only Jeff Garcia could still play and be a backup.
Good god, not Barkley. The recent history of USC quarterbacks is horrible and Barkley’s face just screams “douchebag”.
The 49ers will need to pick up a quality backup QB though. Tolzien is a great “extra coach” kind of guy but if he has to start for a long stretch the 49ers will be in trouble.
Don’t want to set anybody off, LOL, but as I glanced at the list of FA QBs I saw Jason Campbell’s name and thought he could be a veteran long reliever.
OK: Let me have it, I’m covering up! : > 0
You know, before he was injured Campbell had actually started playing Harbaugh style football. Nothing fancy, just efficient and few mistakes. He might be a guy who could manage a few games if Kaepernick was injured.
No idea what his contract status is with Chicago.
Kaepernick’s big game has Packers heading to college for answers
After allowing Colin Kaepernick to set a new NFL record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a playoff loss to the 49ers, the Packers know they have to get better at stopping running quarterbacks. And so their coaches are making like Rodney Dangerfield and going back to school.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy is sending his defensive staff to Texas A&M to study what makes the read-option offense work and what defenses can do to stop it.
“Definitely there’s a lot of conversation about the read option – rightfully so,” McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
McCarthy said the numbers don’t lie, and when the 49ers gained 579 yards against Green Bay’s defense, that told him he needed to find a way to stop quarterbacks who use the read-option.
“Five hundred seventy-nine, that’s a number that will stick in our focus as a defense throughout the offseason. We’re studying the read option, the teams that are doing it in the NFL,” McCarthy said. “We’re even going to the college ranks, we’ll have a couple college coaches come in, spend some time with our staff. Actually, our defensive staff is going to take a trip to Texas A&M, Kevin Sumlin is someone I have great respect for and with his ability to share from both the offensive side and the defensive side his experience in the read option. It’s something from an education, preparation standpoint that we will grow as a staff and be better prepared for in the future.”
McCarthy said he had never sent his coaches to learn from a college coach before, but then again his defense had never been shredded by a college-style offense before. And he’s hoping that learning from college coaches will prevent it from happening again.
Like a warm cup of tea, this is soothing.
The 49ers sent the Packers back to bitch school. lol!
Nice post Razor
That would be a great post Razor if it wasn’t copied verbatim from Pro Football Talk.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/22/kaepernicks-big-game-has-packers-heading-to-college-for-answers/
I prefer to call it passing on the information for others to enjoy without having to click on your link. Thanks for keeping this site honest Officer Hammer.
Lol.
Busted…
@heidelberg slim?
You mean like Puss n Boots in Shrek 2 when they busted him with the bag of catnip?
Jack
What difference does it make. Im sure you know razor wasnt trying to take credit for a scoop or anything.
He might know that if it weren’t for Razoreater’s tendency to copy others’ observations and attempt to pass them off as his own. This isn’t the first time he’s been caught.
Add this to the long list of subjects on which 23jordan doesn’t know what he is talking about. His ignorance apparently knows no limits.
That’s alright. He studies a lot of film, and he’s an important guy on this blog. It’s alot of pressure. It’s only natural to get a little irritable sometimes. I’m sure he does not mean it.
@Deputy Balls
My “attempts” have been to share information with other fans of the 49ers, not to subterfuge as an expert such as yourself and Officer Hammer.
You need people like me so you can point your fockin’ fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.”
@ Razoreater:
Jack hasn’t done anything wrong. He caught you trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own and rightfully called you out for it. Just man up, take your medicine and learn from your mistake. You’re making it worse by acting like such a b!tch about it.
Geez guys, ease up on Razor. I too have noted him put stuff up in the past that’s somebody else’s work, but I’ve never noted him trying to take credit for it. He once put up a quote from Mayock that was written in the first person, so that was confusing, but his actual pattern is not deceit but just sharing.
Must we find conspiracy in everything? Is this Congress? Especially at this time of year when we’re gathering info from numerous sources I appreciate the sharing.
@Deputy Balls
The only thing the word “caught” would pertain to is the hate hanging in the cobwebs of your mind. If it soothes yourself and Officer Hammer, I’ll print warning labels before these type of posts. You know like on the cigarette labels. I would think Librium might be a more effective management tool than the medication you’re currently taking. Don’t make me send you back to bitch school. lol!
*if it soothes yourself and officer hammers’ EGOs*
sorry for the confusion
@ Razoreater:
My “attempts” have been to share information with other fans of the 49ers, not to subterfuge as an expert
You mean like when you presented Mike Mayock’s description of the talent level in this year’s draft as if it were your personal opinion?
http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2013/02/inside-the-49ers/should-the-49ers-sign-dwight-freeney/#comment-434050
It seems pretty obvious that you are desperate to be seen as an expert, or at least as an important person. Did you actually just write that I “need” you? I’m not trying to be cruel, but, believe me, no one here needs you.
P.S. I’m not a reporter. Duh!!!
Awww, does deputy balls need his ego stroked? Don’t look at me, maybe officer hammer will do it for you. Why in the hell would I be needed? It was a joke dude. Get over yourself. You may be a god in your own mind, but to me you’re a stranger in a strange land.
@deputy balls
You need people like me so you can point your fockin’ fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.”
I copied this from Scarface. Talk about flying right over your head deputy. I thought you were better on the uptake than that.
@ Brotha:
Sorry, you are more trusting than I am. With apologies to Mr. Goldfinger (see how easy that is, Razor?), “Once is an accident; twice is a coincidence; three times is an enemy action.”
I’d also be more inclined to buy Razor’s story if he hadn’t gotten so defensive about it and tried to turn it around on Jack. That screams guilty conscience.
@ Razor:
Just because you aren’t a reporter doesn’t mean you get to take credit for someone else’s work.
Are you serious dude. Read the post. If you can’t tell that it is written by a reporter, I’ve got a condo in Sarasota to sell you. I’m not in the turn it around on officer hammer business, but I am inclined to believe if you’re going to dish it out….be prepared to take it. I really don’t take anything anyone on here says all that serious, and I certainly have always been a “trust but verify” kind of guy. So no I don’t trust anyone on here either. I just enjoy being part of a 49er family here in little ole South Bend, Indiana. SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps the trust but verify i copied from Mr. Reagan. Sorry
@ Razor:
The “fockin’” was a dead give away. If I could have remembered a “you’re not that special” line from the movie, I would have responded in kind, but I couldn’t, and I didn’t want to spend the time to hunt around for it.
Similarly, I don’t want to spend any more time on this. It’s very simple. Don’t take credit for words and thoughts that aren’t yours. You should have learned that as a kid. Also, if your motivation truly is only to share information, sharing the source of that information is part of what should be shared. It allows us to judge the credibility of the information, the value of the opinion, etc.
@ Razor:
Read the post. If you can’t tell that it is written by a reporter, I’ve got a condo in Sarasota to sell you.
Well, for what it’s worth, you fooled Nick.
Plus, you can’t use that excuse for the Mike Mayock quote. Quit trying to blame everyone else for your mistake.
@ Claude
I offer this as a good spirited inside-the-family tease, but maybe you’re just spoiling for a fight cuz you and Jordo aren’t locked up much these days! You’re missing the action! Just kidding, and I’m still a little testy about that loss in the SB my damn self!
Breaking all the rules has been a way of life for me, but I will try and abide by the laws set forth by yourself and officer hammer if that will make the peace.
I would like to take this opportunity to issue a formal apology to you and officer hammer and every other fan of this blog if I have led you down the primrose path with any of my posts, to include the famous Mike Mayockgate.
Now lets go Baalke Inc. I love the Forty Fockin Niners!
@Brotha
A little testy? I’m down right still pissed off!
@ Brotha:
I accept that in the spirit in which it was intended. Despite what you might believe, and contrary to what some would have you believe, I’m not particularly interested in arguing. Unfortunately, I have a low tolerance for b/s, and sometimes there’s a lot of b/s on this blog.
Now that we’re done with that, which CBs’ agents are the 49ers talking to in Indy? Are any of the available CBs particularly adept at covering slot receivers? Is the Rosenthal report bad news for Rogers, Culliver, both, Cox?
2 Word for you Deputy:
Aqib Talib
Let’s hope Asomugha was not one of the names the 49ers were talking to.
C Nuts
It sounds like you’re starving for attention. Why don’t you talk football for a change? You troll this blog looking for an argument. You sir are one parhetic nerd.
BTW, if enaging in arguments tickles your fancy, I suggest you go back to your inky dink law school alumni association.
Jack,
That’s not as bad as you picking Sean Renfree as your dark horse QB and passing the info as your own. Someone (forgot who, could have been Jaws) on ESPN said exactly the same thing. Don’t be a hypocrite.
Good afternoon Nick,
I saw it from Evan Silva, who heard it from Mike Mayock who may have heard it from Ron Jaworski who probably spoke with David Cutcliffe.
This subtle difference is I didn’t copy and paste a full paragraph or more about the guy.
Razor, regardless of whether you intend to take credit for other’s work or not it is disrespectful to not acknowledge the author. Even a quick intro saying “Mike Mayock said” or similar would be enough. Give credit where it is due.
Officer hammer, you’re perfect and we’re not. We get it. Just let it go man, let it go.
Reports out of Indy suggest the 49ers have told top free agent conerbacks that they will have money to get one once they unload Alex. Carlos Rogers…might he be the guy to be replaced? I think so.
Razor do you gave a link for this?
You can call me Jack, Jack Hammer…

49ers lineman Al Netter arrested for DUI
San Francisco offensive lineman Al Netter, who spent last year on the practice squad, was cited by the California Highway Patrol for DUI this week.
According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Netter was arrested Wednesday, and cited for having a blood alcohol content above .08.
“The 49ers are aware of the recent matter involving Al Netter,” the 49ers said in a statement. “We take these issues very seriously, but will reserve comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter. The organization will continue to gather the facts and monitor the developments closely.”
Netter better hope he doesn’t end up in front of Judge Judy, or Jim Harbaugh.
Or Deputy Balls.
http://ninerchatter.blogspot.com/2013/02/2013-offseason-projections-offense.html
Bloody Brilliant Officer Hammer. Thank you.
Good start, Jack. A couple of quick reactions:
Miles Austin is an intriguing option, but I disagree on Lloyd as the X. My opinion on Brandon may be tainted by my feelings about his overall attitude, and of course by the memory of the ‘Duck!’ play, LOL! I think they’d be looking for a longer fast guy who can make the tough catch, not the spectacular one. Also, BL doesn’t block a lick.
Because of the apparant depth at OT in this draft a day 2 or day 3 OT might add depth on the line.
Thank you Brotha. Yeah Lloyd’s start here wasn’t so hot, but he’s made a good career for himself.
Good call on OT in the late rounds to provide competition at the bottom of the roster. That makes good competitive sense.
Brandon Lloyd, I never liked him, never trusted him.
@Brotha Tuna
Excellent call on Lloyd…’tough’ catch vs ‘spectacular’ catch.
That’s nice Jack, but I am fixated on the defense right now. When does that post go up?
Tonight or tomorrow Claude.
Parking myself on the couch to watch Kyle Larson make his NASCAR debut. Have been watching him race all over Nor Cal since he was 14, and today he is at Daytona. Incredible.
What a Jack as$ for thinking NASCAR is actually a ‘sport’. If that’s the case, I excercise everday to work and back.
Why don’t you look up what it takes to drive one of those cars going over 200 MPH on sharp turns Trolls, then come back and say it isn’t a sport?
I will leave that debate to you Troll. I just pray that everyone is ok. That was ugly…
Seen the crash online last night Jack. It’s amazing that there wasn’t any fatalities. I can’t believe how totaled Larson’s car was.
Somebody please explain to the rookie that there’s not supposed to be an inter-active experience for fans at a NASCAR event! Glad for no tragic outcome.
NASCAR is a sport, you don’t see many of these guys weighing 250 pounts with beer guts, most are the lean side and it takes skill to drive 200 miles per hour, however women’s basketball on any level is not a sport. 99% could not make a good men’s high school team.
Good writeup JH. The one area I’d differ with is in your opinion of Walker. He’s been good but I don’t see him as being hard to replace when you look at his size and the fact he had to learn how to block after coming in as a WR. He’s developed his game and has really been impressive with the Wham block in particular, but bringing in a true TE with better height and blocking background will easily replace him and hopefully give us more consistency with the pass catching.
“sometimes there’s a lot of bs on this blog”
Claude, where do you get that? Hahaha
What do you mean, “sometimes”? :P
According to this article, Eagles aren’t going to part with Foles in a trade with the Chiefs. What could this mean for AS?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000144192/article/report-kansas-city-chiefs-told-nick-foles-unavailable
We have a wiener!!!!
Yeah, starting to look like the 49ers may have a trade partner. Chiefs go with Luke Joeckel, OT, 1st overall to protect him.
Chiefs would be a better landing spot for Alex, in my opinion.
All the hype about Norv and all that, I just don’t see the Browns as a safe place to go. More like a place players go to end their careers. The Browns are perennial losers. Maybe some day it changes around but… meh.
The Niners have some kind of history of trading with the Chiefs. Playing for Andy Reid would be good, Joeckel in the first, build a nice line and it would be fairly sweet for Alex.
I agree Adam.
Adam, and then the Chiefs could go after a QB like Tyler Wilson with their 2nd round pick to groom behind AS if he doesn’t move into the 1st round. But I think he will be there for them.
This stigma around the Browns has you guys blind to the fact that the Browns were not a bad team this year and they were 1000% better then the Chiefs. The Browns have a better defense and arguably and equal offensive line. I’ve said it before I’d take Richardson over the injury prone pair of backs the Chiefs have which leaves essentially Bowe as the only thing the Chiefs have the Browns don’t. And that can be fixed with a good draft pick.
If you had plugged Smith into both teams last year the Chiefs would have still sucked and the Browns would have had a better record then the Steelers.
Means my butt was wrong again, d’oh. Without Foles to Cheifs my Alex to Browns plan is harder to sell.
If the Browns want Alex I’d say let them find another trade partner for Weeden and throw in a DB instead; they’ve got one or two don’t they? There would need to be choices to balance out the deal.
I’d love the 49ers to go back to the well and go lassie on Michael Johnson. Give him the helicopter ride. Spare no expense and get this guy in the scarlett and gold.
Jarvis Jones a highly touted top ten pick has spinal stenosis. Wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole. Readjust your boards peeps.
4.72 for Ertz
Here’s my wacky solution of the week:
Trade Smith and a few extra picks (since we have a billion of ‘em we aren’t going to use) to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald.
Fitz has a stiff contract and Arizona would want some big compensation – like draft picks and a starting QB.
Problem solved. We get Fitz, with Crabs and Manningham and Kyle Williams (and maybe Jenkins hits his sophomore stride) and we win the Superbowl next year. :)
Can I play? Revis is so pissed off at the piehole known as Sherman, that he asks to be traded…so he can move his island to San Francisco.
And then he gets to show case his skills twice a year, the 49ers play him at WR and he schools she’man I mean sherman.
Ha! Can’t stand Sherman. Big mouth.
Wait, I thought you liked Smith. Do you really want to see him killed behind that line in Arians’ offense?
AUTO-REFRESH
$%$^&^&*^&*%^#$#!@#!@$(&**!!! STINKS!!!
I like what I’m reading about Eric Reid, S, LSU. PFW has a little capsule on him.
PFW ?? what’s that?
Pro Football Weekly.
In accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Bobbies:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000144193/article/alex-smiths-trade-value-brandon-weedens-ceiling-more-buzz
What is Alex Smith’s trade value? San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said it’s “unlikely” his team cuts Smith. The Niners will try to trade him, but Harbaugh said the other option is that the quarterback will remain on the team for 2013. Don’t bet on it. One NFL general manager estimated San Francisco could receive a second-round pick for Smith, provided the trade partner believes Smith could be the franchise’s quarterback for any length of time. That’s pricey, but if a team thinks Smith is the answer for more than one year, that’s worth it. Clubs realize there aren’t a ton of answers at quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft. While you’d have to trade for Smith and then draft someone, too, teams know the former 49ers starter won’t tear apart the locker room if he ends up getting beat out.
Again, I must comply with regulations:
http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/55168/morning-afc-west-notes
Yahoo! Sports reports the Chiefs appear to be the most interested team in San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith. Indications are the 49ers plan to trade Smith rather than cut him. I think there is no doubt that Smith is high on the Chiefs’ wish list.
If the 9ers do trade Smith to the Chiefs I do’nt see us getting any extra picks. What i could see is the chiefs swapping 3rd and 4th rd picks with the 9ers giving us to picks at the top of those rds
I think the 49ers could get at least a conditional 3rd Round pick that could turn into a 2nd Round pick in 2014 with incentives.
I agree if they swap picks it will be for this years draft if they get an extra pick it will be for next years draft. I think i would rather swap picks its almost like moving up a rd with where the chiefs draft
Razor ,
NEVER!
A 4th rounder would suffice in the end, I think, but negotiate down to that. A 4th plus the swaps Old Coach mentioned would be great imo, cuz moving up 30 spots makes a huge difference.
If you’re talking about KC, they could offer a 4th round pick (#98), which is the second pick of the 4th round. I doubt they would offer their 3rd round pick (#63) the first pick of the round, unless the 9ers gave them their 4th round pick (#127). Interesting though…
According to Cole, we have another contestant…the Arizona Cardinals. Looks like we may have a perfect storm for a bidding war baby.
swapping picks for Alex sounds pretty good to me, this draft has talent we need if we select the right guy. this would be a good way to move up in those rounds.
Eddie Lacey, the brusing running back from Alabama…when asked what was his favorite movie, he responded “Fox and the Hound”. Heh, heh, you’ve got to be kidding me. Too funny.
Seriously, he said he watches it before games.
Sandcastle, I mean Sanders would lay out his entire uniform on the locker room before playing in a game Razor.
What’s funny is that one NFL writer’s mock has the 49ers taking Lacey with their first pick. How do these guys come up with their mocks?
Which one is that?
Albert Breer
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts
You have to click on More Projections from that page to see his picks.
Charles Haley had a penchant for walking around the locker room stark naked while grasping a non flacid unit and sticking it in people faces kinda makes Lacey sound like a pretty normal guy.
Incase you don’t believe me:
“Haley would stroll up to an unsuspecting (49er) teammate, whip out his phallus, and repeatedly stroke it in his face. Players initially laughed it off…”

Haley makes just about anyone look normal.
Didn’t he take a whiz on Tim Harris’ car?
What are the differences between Tebow and T’eo?
1) Tebow has a “b”.
2) Tebow has an imaginary father in the sky, T’eo has an imaginary girlfriend in the ground.
Yes, I know I’m going to hell for that. Hope to see a few of you there.
Grant are you still up?
I want to spend a 6th round pick on one of your alums but I thought I’d get your thoughts on him.
Grant what do you know about Jeff Baca? He could be a steal in the 6th I think.
Anybody else watching Reid Fragel -big TE converted to OT ?
Havent’ heard much. 33″ arms aren’t terrible but still on the shorter side especially for a tackle, 34″ is considered the beginning of good length. Average to slow 3 cone drill time 7.62 vs Joeckel’s 7.40 for comparison.
Here’s a blurb on arm length and it agrees that 33″ is OK but 34″ and up is ideal for an NFL lineman: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ys-heightvsarmlength031209
Check however 33 bench;30.inch vert ;113.0 broad not bad at all for 5(ish) rounder
For a 5th I’d probably at this point go with Terron Armstead if you’re looking for a tackle.
HA, then I go to NFL.com and he’s on the front page as a potential first rounder now. Never mind.
Yes was projected at 3rd before, but certainly impressive.
DUSTIN HOPKINS the kicker I would like to see as a 49er ran a 4.69… not bad.
He’s being projected as a second rounder if not a late first rounder on NFL.com.
Wow, Austin and Goodwin put on a speed show this morning! Anybody hoping for Austin as a 31st pick can probably kiss that goodbye. If Davis was still alive, we know who the Raiders 1st pick would be.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000144535/article/tavon-austin-marquise-goodwin-stun-in-40yard-dash
Goodwin could be had in the 3rd Round though…Would not surprise me to see the Patriots trade up for Austin.
It’s really hard to predict teams, especially Baalke, but I’m thinking it’s somewhat unlikely they go WR in the 1s round. I do think they grab a WR in their first four picks though.
If we lose Walker or Goldson then I could see SF looking for replacements, but otherwise I’m guessing DL in the first. If the CB from Miss fell to them they might get him.
All these good numbers maybe might let K. Allen slip some, since he didn’t run, but I’d doubt he’ll fall close enough for SF to grab or even trade up to grab ahead of GB, StL, Cinci.
Is he injured?
Yes, but I forget what it is. I believe he’s planning to run 40 at his ProDay. It gives him a few extra weeks to heal up.
Denard Robinson just ran a 4.34 in his first run.
What round do you consider a guy like Robinson? I’m thinking I may have to bump him into the 5th Round with that time.
Looking forward to seeing how Robinson does in the position drills first.
QB from Michigan?
The report I saw on the link Space provided had Robinson at 4.43. I also heard he wasn’t catching the ball well at Senior Bowl.
Yeah, Robinson’s official time went slower than the original 4.34 unofficial time. It usually does a bit, but I thought it would end up being around 4.39. Not that 4.43 is bad. But he didn’t look very good in the drills. You could really tell his lack of experience when compared to the other receivers out there.
Justin Hunter at 4.44 and Patterson at 4.42, with their size, looks impressive.
R. Woods didn’t help himself with that 40 time today. If he was considered a 2-3 rounder I would guess he’s a 3-4 now. I liked him as a deep threat possibility but not likely with that speed.
Who was the guy from Rutgers who Cinci drafted last year? Didn’t he run a similar time to Woods? He played well as a rook. There are guys playing in NFL who ran those kind of times at Combine. I don’t think he’ll drop to the third.
Well it’s my fault for getting suckered in with his “projected 40 time”, I initially thought the kid could be a burner. I shouldn’t have made it sound like I thought he would be a poor choice for someone but I had a role in mind and I don’t think he fits it anymore.
Sanu?
far worse actually, 4.65
Yeah, Sanu. 4.65? A. Jeffrey also and he did OK. But in that discussion last year it came out that Brandon Marshall ran a 4.7? And A. Boldin ran kinda slow too, but he turned out rather well.
Agree on both counts though, Woods is still a decent choice but less so for some teams’ needs; not going to stretch the field all that well. With former USC coach Morton on staff it may be interesting to see if Wooods slipped into the second. Besides, how much faster is Keenan Allen? Inquiring minds………
Difference is that Sanu, Jeffrey and Marshall are all big, strong WRs. Sanu was compared to Anquan Bolden. Robert Woods will never be confused for those guys.
Woods will want to show good acceleration and lateral movement in the cone and shuttle drills.
I want this kid on our team. He’d be an upgrade over Whitner or a cheaper almost as good version of Goldson(maybe better one day given his age).
8. Chris Clemons
2012 Grade: +4.4
2012 Snaps: 1120
Summary: Clemons is coming off the best season of his four-year career as he paired with fellow safety Reshad Jones to comprise one of the best duos in the league. His 0.35 Yards per Cover Snap ranked eighth in the league and he was sixth among safeties in Tackling Efficiency, missing one every 12.3 attempts. He posted a solid +4.4 run defense grade despite playing over 75 percent of his snaps “out of the box” as a free safety. The only thing holding down Clemons’ overall grade was the -3.0 he posted as a pass rusher, but prospective teams will gladly make that sacrifice in order to bring in the run stopping and coverage ability that Clemons showed in 2012.

thanks for posting this Coffee
OK here’s my at this moment plan for our safeties:
Cut Whitner and let Goldson walk. Sign Clemons to replace Goldson and draft Rambo in the second to replace Whitner.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I like this idea…….better to have a veteran and a rookie instead of two rookies/unproven guys back there.
“Ronald Reagan, another person of great wisdom and advice” – I lol
Looks like Fat Andy and the Chiefs are going to make a liar out of me and sign Alex, or at least that’s what they want everyone to think at the moment.
oops, sorry 1-9r mistakenly replied to your post.
“There you go again” 19R! THAT could start a round of arguments, LOL! Fortunately, we have better things to talk about. And no, you can’t infer my politics from that either way, Bro. ; >)
Everyone sleeping in or is the combine that compelling?
Onterio Mccalebb 4.21 Turbo Lover
I believe that is official…
This page is still listing Goodwin’s 4.27 as the best of the day, maybe they just haven’t updated it yet.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/tracker
You’re right. Mccalebbs’ official time has been adjusted to 4.34
In the spirit of full disclosure, I give you PFT:
Report: Chiefs interested in Alex Smith, Luke Joeckel
Alex Smith would be another possibility and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and NFL.com reports that it is one that interests them. Rapoport writes that “word is starting to leak of their interest” in Smith and that the Chiefs have “shown more interest” than anyone else in making a trade for a quarterback that could become their starter in 2013.
The 49ers said this week that all options are on the table in regard to Smith, who is set to make $8.5 million in 2013. A trade that allows Smith to at least challenge for a starting role while also bringing something back for the 49ers seems like the best one of those options for all involved.
Rapoport also reports that the Chiefs are “high” on Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel, a player who has been mentioned often in discussions of possibilities for the first overall pick in the draft. That’s not surprising, although interest in Joeckel will help dictate what the team does with current left tackle Branden Albert, an impending free agent. There’s been some talk of keeping Albert and moving him to guard if Joeckel is the pick in April, albeit talk Albert thinks should cease and desist.
With a decision looming for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe as well, the Chiefs will have plenty to do in the next couple of weeks as they plot their course into the free agency and trading season.
Footnote Etiquette: Check
PS It is helpful because some sites/analysts can be fulluvit. I’m not sure I know all the best, but I’ve got more faith in some than others.
More from PFT:
With a little more than a week to go before the decision must be made, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com is reporting that indications are that the 49ers will pass on using the tag. Citing multiple league sources, Maiocco says that the 49ers are “leaning” in that direction. General Manager Trent Baalke was predictably noncommittal this week.
“Whether we use the tag or not, I really don’t know at this point. I think I do know, but I’m not willing to share it at this time,” Baalke said.
Tagging Goldson would cost the team $7.44 million, which could also limit their ability to hold onto Alex Smith’s $8.5 million salary long enough to trade it once March 12 rolls around. With talks on a long-term deal not producing much optimism, there’s a good chance that Goldson will be hitting the open market off the best season of his career.
That doesn’t mean he won’t wind up back with the 49ers, but it certainly raises the likelihood that Goldson will strike gold somewhere else.
Someone is going to give Goldson that big deal$$ Glad it’s not the 49ers. He’s not worth $8 million a year.
if goldson leaves we are going to need to replace him and Whitner……i really hope the team doesnt stick with Whitner.
With the 49ers talking to agents of CBs, I wonder if moving Culliver to safety will become an option.
I wonder what Spillman can give you this year? Definetly drafting a safety day two.
Which free agent CB’s are out there we can realistically sign?
dc9er, if the 49ers don’t re-sign Goldson and let Alex go, they will have money to make a reasonable bid for a CB like Keenan Lewis from the Steelers. There are a few decent CBs on the market.
wouldnt surprise me if the niners went that direction Scooter….thanks for the info
Who is our backup center? The 49ers official roster page has only one player listed as C and that’s Goodwin. All the other lineman are listed as T,G/T or G but no one else is C or G/C.
