Is Jim Harbaugh’s sideline behavior detrimental to the 49ers?

I have to think Jim Harbaugh’s theatrics and sideline antics – I could have sworn he threw his play sheet — are detrimental to his decision-making process and the overall positive impact he should have on the course of the game.

His focus on the next play or the next decision has to be blurred as his blood pressure explodes off the charts and he rants and raves up and down the sidelines. The TV cameras showed him doing that multiple times.

I understand being upset, but there comes a point when a coach’s reactions are a negative.

what i wonder if it has any even subtle effect on the officials who are human and will naturally react badly to such theatrics even with the best of intentions of trying to officiate the game impartially….though I think the officiating in the Super Bowls was criminal.

i think his “antics” are part of the Harbaugh package. so far, they’ve gotten us to the NFC Championship in Year 1, and the Super Bowl in Year 2. barring a highly unforeseeable move by JH to go into therapy, I’ll take the package and see where it takes us. would I rather have the incredibly brilliant, creative, calculating Bill Walsh on the sidelines for us, who might take some of these moments and come up with some clever play to turn the tide? sure. but last i checked, BW is no longer available.

  3. IMG says:

Only if he throws his headset at a player, hits them in the eye and they are not able to play the rest of the game.

When Harbaugh called the Niners 2nd timeout before the Niners final 3rd down of the game I wonder if he realized that effectively made the drive all or nothing.

If the Niners had that 2nd timeout after the 4th down pass was incomplete then the Ravens would only have been able to run the clock down on 3rd down. So the Niners would have gotten the ball back with at least 44 seconds at midfield.

I realize the playclock had run down but a 5 yard penalty would have been better then losing the timeout and any hope of winning should we fail to get a TD on the current drive. HUGE mistake by Harbaugh.

    he doesn’t look like a leader…

  6. Grumpy Guy says:

Behavior? Maybe if he loses focus and it costs us on the next play – but I have not seen that. My problem is not his behavior, it’s the lack of energy and urgency when we take the field – flat three straight weeks to start playoff games is not a good look.

The whole world was watching and saw Harbaugh throw a tantrum, per his usual. Reflects poorly on the organization. Period.

  8. 49er42 says:

Doesn’t bother me. He should tone it down a bit. I think it was worst this year in the playoffs.
I also have to say the Niners get nailed for little stuff all the time, but rarely does the other team. I would be steamed too.

This is a video of Jim Harbaugh in his room today… http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YersIyzsOpc

Bill Walsh’s skill was knowing that it’s almost impossible to make sound intelligent decisions in high pressure, do or die, emotional situations. Therefore he calculated what he was going to do in every conceivable situation before that game – in other words, which particularly plays he would call in each part of the field, at each stage of the game. In effect, he would have known which 4 plays to call, and what the opposition was going to do, in that goal-line situation at the death, BEFORE the game. He would have simply looked at his clipboard, looked up the appropriate play (one he decided upon when thinking rationally in his office), and sent out instructions to the players. It was a level of preparation beyond anything the NFL had ever seen; he basically took emotion out of the game. Harbaugh must realize that emotion is the enemy of sound thinking. He should read Walsh’s biographies and learn from his mistakes. The other coaches can rant and rave, but the head guy must remain cool and composed. Harbaugh is a very good motivator & man manager, which is how he’s turned around our underperforming franchise, but he must remember that football is a cerebral game as well as a physical one.

Of course, if one has the plays pre-selected as you described, it doesn’t matter how freaked out you are — you can check the chart no matter how angry you are.

      Really good points, James.

I rather have JH revealing his true self than being a phony. You could complain all you want about the officials, but at the end, the Niners’ offense was not poised and composed at the 5 yd line for the last 3 plays(2nd, 3rd and 4th down). The inexperience showed. The 2nd down play did not go off in time(JH called a timeout), but it sure looks like that was a potential TD. Got no one to blame except the QB. It is already a great accomplishment to make it to the SB in the 2nd year of the JH era. I expect more SB appearences, but Trent Baalke need to draft/sign some help on the defense (shut down corner and more mobile Safety and D-line help).

My 2 cents….The team looks to the Head Coach for how they are to react during the game, the HC is in charge, and the team looks to him for steady leadership. Is Jim Harbaugh a flawed individual, maybe…But its his antics on the sidelines are what will hurt him & the team in the long run.

  13. Neal says:

I am just wondering if his animation temper is so over the top, he does not get favorable calls.

  14. Jdilla says:

How is it negative to the team? This isn’t basketball where the coach can get a technical for showing emotion. That’s a mighty bold assertion to claim his playcalling abilities are negatively affected by his reactions and I doubt you have any evidence to back it up. Conversely, him getting fired up and angry could just as well have a positive effect on his playcalling judgement and decisions. Some people thrive when they get angry or pissed off.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I don’t know that there’s any evidence to show that Harbaugh specifically makes poorer decisions when excited or under pressure, but there’s no limit to the Psych studies that show this. That’s why The Genius (BW) did his best to eliminate emotion from game time decisions.

  15. AES* says:

    Not at all.
Until he get’s called for an unsportsman like conduct penalty like boneheaded def-coach Rob Ryan, his antics don’t bother me.

    • AES* says:

Yahoo Sports is trending that Jm Harbaugh was not treating the loss with class and grace by complaining about the ref’s.

But Harbaugh is a tactician and I believe he is using this to fire up next years team. Just like he used last year’s loss against the Giants in the championship game to propel this year’s team, now he has a defined motive for next year.

  16. Rebelscum says:

Yep not perfect but better then a mooch, dingleberry or a stolen Nolan! I know Grant you and your father are not fans, but lay off. If this organization thinks they would be better off with a coach that was more PCM, they would fade fast! Truth and quality is not pretty at times!

  17. Alex Smith for President says:

Does it matter whether his San Diego problem with a DUI occurred as he celebrated a win or bemoaned a loss??? His off-field behavior over the next few weeks will tell the story. He was so ready to enjoy the glory if Kaipernick and company produce a win. Sad thing is, Harbaw had the tools. He got outcoached by John. Plain and simple. And then “tried” to blame the refs.

  18. drsgrosse says:

I suspect that Harbaugh’s antics are what gets the officials to favor the opponents.

  19. Bill says:

Purely moronic thinking. Dont you have anything better to write about? Last I looked the coach was not responsible for execution. The players laid the egg in the first half. Kinda funny that no one says anything about the egg laid by Baltimore in the 2nd half other than a bogus kick off return. So how bout you get better at reporting before you think that the coach being pissed is going to hurt the team. Last I heard Roman calls the plays jack!

  20. Adam says:

To answer the question: yes. And I’ve said this for awhile now. Its starting to be noticed elsewhere. I’m also noticing now that John tries to cover for him. All this flowery nonsense about”best coach in the league”, etc.

  21. Alex Smith for President says:

    question for Coach Jim Harbaw:
what happened to that good advice from your dad…
    “get ahead and stay ahead”…..

Somehow, some way, the Ravens led from start to finish.
or as they say in the racing world, from pole to pole.

(can I carry your golf clubs?
I hear that Colin turned you down on that one……)

  22. PhD says:

Yes, because it can get the Refs to not like him and when that happens the calls will go against him more than if they like him or are at least neutral about him.
