Report: 49ers trade Alex Smith to Chiefs for second round pick

According to Jay Glazer, the 49ers have traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, and according to Adam Schefter, the Niners will receive more than one draft pick in return.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport believes the Chiefs will trade the Niners the No.34 overall pick in this year’s draft and a draft pick in 2014 for Smith. I’ll update you as more details surface.

If this report is true, the 49ers have five draft picks in the first 93 picks. They could easily trade up for a top defensive end or tackle if they choose to.

UPDATE: According to Jason LaCanfora, the 49ers will receive the Chiefs 2013 second round pick for sure. The 49ers could potentially get their 2014 second round pick as well depending on Smith’s performance.

The 49ers must strongly consider trading up for an impact defensive lineman, like Sharrif Floyd, Sheldon Richardson, Ezekial Ansah or Star Lotulelei (if he passes his heart exams). The 49ers also could trade up for a pass rusher, like Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones or Bjoern Werner.

Maybe Ribico can finally try associating himself with a winner now!!!

    • ribico says:

Run along doggie. Your master, Pavlov, is calling you.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Still fronting #1 ???

You are a tremendous loser! Just tremendous! Til the day you die, huh Ribs?

        Go Alex!!!

    • claude balls says:

      @ ribico:

What will it take to get you to keep the AS avatar? The entertainment value of PBL’s and Bay’s head exploding on a regular basis would be significant.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        CB

Just for you, buddy old pal! My head is not exploding, but you and Ribs are predictably snug in each others’ rears.

      • ribico says:

As I posted Claude, I had a new avatar with 6 Lombardis all set. But then we had some first half offensive futility, coupled with red zone offensive stupidity – that wiped out that possibility.

@ Mr. E, a tremendous loser? To paraphrase our favorite loser poster, we are still a QB away from a SB win.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Ribs

Not at all. Alex was the weak link on the team. Now CK is one of the strongest links on the team, maybe less so than Justin, Patrick, Navorro, and Frank Gore, maybe.

You’ll come around this season. Colin will be considered the best player in the entire NFL by mid season. Hopefully you’ll still be around for that.

      • rocket says:

        Rib,

Please keep it. The posts we will get to read will be worth it.

      • claude balls says:

        E/PBL:

Sorry, but it is more than a little amusing how upset that avatar makes you guys. I’m surprised your buttons are that easy to push.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        CB
Don’t apologize. I’m not upset. I pity the fool.

You obviously pity the fool too, telling by your ever present need to stick up for him.

      • claude balls says:

        E/PBL:

Naah, it’s more that you make yourself an easy target.

      • Matt says:

I usually stay out of these squabbles and any comment that starts with, “I usually stay out of these” probably should just be deleted, but I laughed pretty good @ “We’re still just a Qb away from a SB win.”
I’m a huge Kaepernick fan but it’s worth noting, great play on a previous comment.

    • Nick says:

      Good one Mr E

  2. old coach says:

Grant who mentioned a 2nd rd pick?

  3. old coach says:

Wow if this is true its huge. With the #31 and 33 picks we could package them along with one of our extra 3rd rd picks and move up into the top 10. Thankyou Alex.

  4. BigP says:

The Chiefs second round pick this year and possibly the second round pick next year. That is freaking awesome. The front office did a great job.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/27/chiefs-giving-up-a-2013-second-and-change-for-alex-smith/

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Um, if this is true, it’s less to the credit of the front office, and more to the credit of one Alex Smith. HE alone built his body of work, (coaching helps, of course, but Harbaugh didn’t throw a single pass this year) and set his reputation with his actions on and off the field. Does anyone here (other than the anti-Alex whackos) think the front office could get a #2 for a bad player? If so, please explain how you get any front office guy in the NFL to trade away a #2 (or any number!) and put his career in jeopardy, if the guy you’re getting isn’t worth it.
Value isn’t determined by the opinions of guys reading blogs. It’s determined by the people involved, and how much they’re willing to spend. If they say Alex is worth a #2, then by definition, he’s worth a #2. Or, maybe the guys flaming Alex here are that much smarter than Andy Reid and the professionals with KC.
      Maybe.

      • Nick says:

HE [Alex Smith] alone built his body of work

Baloney. If that’s the case, why did he wait 7 years to start building the body of work? Jim Harbaugh res-erected Alex Smith’s career. Without JH, a strong running game, solid special teams, and top 5 defense, Alex Smith will revert back to his pre-JH days.

      • claude balls says:

Why does everyone insist on talking in extremes? It doesn’t exactly help your credibility.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Claude

It’s a Niners fan blog! Don’t mince your words! come out on fire!!!

If you haven’t figured it out by now, my views in particular are not nearly as extreme as I make them out to be (with the exception of my belief that CK will be the best to ever play the game and Steve Young is a phony).

But the point is to speak in extremes. Drive debate. Take a position and stick to it. I actually really liked Alex Smith for all the seasons preceding Harbaugh’s acquisition of CK. I supported Alex last year, much to Jordy’s dismay, and this season I started out hoping he’d improve. But with a 2nd year CK sitting on the bench (GOAT by the time he retires), Alex’s rope was appropriately short, and Harbaugh did exactly what I would have done.

Claude, stand up, choose a player who you can champion without having egg on your face, and bring the heat!

    • msclemons67 says:

For once Andy Reid is on the receiving end of getting fleeced for a QB.

  5. tkamB says:

Such a great haul, hope they go after Revis with all these picks we now have.

    • Nick says:

No way, that would be a catastrophe

      • Matt says:

I agree there are some fast DBs in this draft who are much better than an ACL torn Revis who isn’t going to come up and make a tackle on Wilson in Seattle.
I think this opens the door to letting Goldson, Moss, and Rogers (cut) walk.
I expect Dion Jordon to be a 49er with some fresh legs in the secondary.

  6. Jack Hammer says:

@ProFootballTalk…At least the 49ers can now draft another guy who won’t play very much if at all in 2013.

  7. BigP says:

Here is the traditional NFL Draft trade value chart. They have to start using these picks for something. I still think they trade many of these picks into future years for better value.

    http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

  8. old coach says:

Our 1st , the chiefs 2nd and Carolinas 3rd could move us up to #7 who do we want at #7?

    • Grant Cohn says:

The Cardinals have the seventh pick. Would they trade with the 49ers?
The Bills have the eighth pick and the Jets have the ninth pick. Maybe Baalke could work something out with the Jets.

    • Jack Hammer says:

It might be a good idea to see if the 49ers are adding picks along with Alex before getting too wrapped up with additional trades, or calling this highway robbery.

  9. LSX says:

LOL, wow Kansas City got screwed! Talk about overpaying. This is excellent news!

Good luck in KC Alex, I think you’ll succeed. And thank you for getting us such awesome compensation.

  10. ninermd says:

If true what a steal. KC fans are going nuts. This may change a whole lot of everyone’s draft guessing. This is why I don’t even bother. Nobody is ever right. But I’ll take a shot at one guess. I smell a trade for a big name this offseason. And it rhymes with Terrelle beavis….
    Wheeew!

  11. 23jordan says:

Ill happily admit that I was wrong about someone giving something up for smith. Does anyone have any links to a KC blog. Would love to see their reaction. Thank you Alex.

  12. Domingo says:

But mortensen said there was no interest in Alex.

  13. Domingo says:

    Highway robbery!

  14. GoldRush says:

Excellant move, we now have the means and the relationship with gamble to make a move for Revis. Its possible we can do it and still keep our first round pick. Two second rounders and a mid rounder seems feesable to me. What do you think Grant

  15. old coach says:

I do’nt see the 9ers using all of these picks. I see them either trading for a player or i think more likely trading up for a pick. If we did work out something with the Jets to get the 9th pick of the draft what position and what player do you think they might go for? I think it will be a D lineman\OLB

  16. Domingo says:

Who would have ever thought that we would get double deuces for Alex Smith? ALEX SMITH. I hope our chain is not being pulled here. This is the steal of the century

  17. BigP says:

  19. Mr. Everything says:

Why are people angling for Revis? The dude gets paid what $6M, but is a constant malcontent unless he’s getting paid $16M?

I think he’s the best CB in the game, but not at nearly 2x the salary Tom Brady just accepted ($9M). Let’s all forget about Terrell Beavis.

    • ninermd says:

If getting him at a good price is possible. Then why not? I have stated before if the price is to steep forget it. Winning teams sometime change players outlook on attitude and money. Kicking the tires isn’t a bad idea. Goldson is priority number 1. So get on revis island guy!

      • Mr. Everything says:

Goldson is gone. And he’s not that great. If they can get Jairus Byrd for $6M they should, but aside from him, they’re better off going cheap in the draft, Cyprien/McDonald/Rambo. Plus, they have a couple of guys they’ve protected from the PSquad that can play safety, and remember, they paid Spillman, who is a better athlete than Goldson, $6M last year through 2015.

Say goodbye to Goldson, and keep Revis the Malcontent away from here. His ego too big.

      • ninermd says:

Goldson not that good? Ill take a twenty of what you’re smoking. I can understand the revis arguement, but trust me without Goldson our defense takes a big step back. 100 yard runners all day and nobody isn’t afraid to catch up the middle. Goldson is a must sign. Two pro bowls later cements that question.

    • BigP says:

      Mr. Everything,
Brady doesn’t really make $9 million a year, they tacked on those years to help alleviate cap issues. I do agree with you about the Revis thing though, he wants to be paid like a QB and you just can’t do that. How much are you going to give up for a one year rental?

      • Mr. Everything says:

Really BigP? He’s paid until he’s 40, he wants to play until he’s 40, and his new contract is worth $27M for 3 years. Is that all a bunch of hooey?

      • BigP says:

        Mr. Everything,
Yeah, really. Tom Brady’s base salary this year is only $1 million, but his cap figure is $13.8 million. In 2017, his base salary is $9 million, but his cap number is $15 million. His old contract was modified for cap relief. The cap number is what is relevant, because it includes money that was already given to the player via a signing bonus. The base salary doesn’t include the signing bonus money that factors into the cap hit. So yeah, it is a bunch of hooey.

        http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/tom-brady/

      • claude balls says:

        E/PBL:

Big P is correct. As usual, Mike Florio was all over the contract, and he broke it down here:

        http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/26/tom-brady-gets-30-million-to-sign/

In summary, the restructuring will pay Brady $3 million more over the next two years than he was going to earn under the existing contract and he received $30 million up front as a signing bonus. He got a raise and his 2013-14 money was guaranteed. It’s no sacrifice on his part.

I also am willing to bet that Brady doesn’t play in 2015-17 under the salaries called for in the extended contract. He either will retire or the team will adjust the contract.

      • rocket says:

The main thing about the Brady extension is that he was guaranteed a lot of money that he wasn’t before. If he goes down in the next 2 years the Pats have big problems. Not that they wouldn’t anyway without Brady on the field, but having all that guaranteed money on future years is a real gamble just to lower his cap hit now.

  20. jgwindsor jaws says:

again my post was superseded by this site’s refreshing action for the 15th upteen time ….if it doesn’t get fixed i will give up trying to post….i am not going to jump through hoops no matter how easy to accommodate this….

i will just say this was great ….. it is like the niners got a middle to low 1st round pick, kind of like where rodgers was taken, with this years 2nd and the conditional high round pick next year……

niners cap is the next big story…..the DL needs to be overhauled to expand the niners potential SB window….also focus is on goldson and walker……
wouldn’t franchise tag either one and see what the market bears….i think i would make a bigger play for walker because i think he brings a lot more to the all around offense than does goldson does to the defense…..i also would not draft tim mcdonald’s son as a potential free safety….i didn’t see too much combine work but did see mcdonald’s route coverage run and he looks way too stiff….

this is going to be a great off season to watch

    • AngusinCanada says:

      jg, I agree.
I think the 49ers should sign Delanie for a multi-year deal – I think the market for him won’t be too unreasonable. Goldson, on the other hand, might be more difficult to sign to a reasonable long-term deal. His coverage skills are over-rated, (but obviously awesome physicality), they won’t over pay for him. They could draft a safety with better coverage skills and save several million on the cap and real money.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Angus

Delanie is integral to this offense. You are smart when you’re not talking about Alex. Maybe we can have a better year in 2013.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AC, I like DW but they need to draft a TE for RZ purposes. Someone like GEscobar.

    • Mr. Everything says:

      Type faster then, dude.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

It’s not just when you’re posting, it’s when you’re reading, too. Takes you to the top of the page, and you get to fumble around and find where you were. Annoying as hell.

    • BigP says:

      JG,
Just write your post in notepad, then copy and paste it when you are finished. If you are on a ipad, you can write it in the notes app, then copy and paste it.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @jg
Yeah the refresh jump is frustrating. Sometimes when I’m in the middle of a comment and it jumps I can scroll back down and find my partially written text in tact and just continue it. Other times it gets wiped out and I’m SOL.

  21. old coach says:

I believe priority #1, #2 and #3 are pass rush, pass rush and pass rush. Before CB or WR.

  22. Hoferfan67 says:

Now the 9ers have the picks to move up to get the top DL and TE I believe they will choose. Let’s hope they get a 1st round pick that can play some snaps this year.

  23. ribico says:

I guess it’s time to ignore posters from Jack all the way down to Welcher who said there was virtually no market for AS. Biases can bite you.

But anyway, this is a great deal for the Niners. And for Smith, he goes into system that at least knows what a QB is.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Rib, I wanted Alex to stay.

      • ribico says:

@Jack, that was a scenario that had an infinitesimal chance of coming about.

@MrE. Yes, but that applies to non d-bags only.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Maybe Rib, but you can take my “bias” and stick it.

      • ribico says:

        >>Maybe Rib, but you can take my “bias” and stick it.

Nah Jack, there must have been some other reason for you to post that unflattering rotoworld link on page after page? Or your reaction when I posted an alternate take indicating Smith’s value.

        Jack Hammer says:

        February 14, 2013 at 1:09 pm

        Rib,

Please explain to me how Vick re-signing with Philly will have any impact on Smith’s value. Does it change Cleveland’s situation? Does it fix the Jets cap problems? Is Arizona all of a sudden not part of the NFC West?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Yes Rib, it is called support for my belief and desire to have him here as the backup.

      • ribico says:

Well Jack, citing sources, laughably incorrect as they were, on Smith’s nil league value is an interesting way of expressing your hope for his continued presence on the team.

        But whatever you say.

    • Mr. Everything says:

Ah, yes, Ribs, we definitely care about where Alex ends up, don’t we?

      • old coach says:

Mr. Everything i was never a big fan of Alex as a QB but i was always a big fan of him as a man a leader a good soldier so yes i do care about where Alex went i will root my butt off for him in any game that does’nt effect the 9ers.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

        Well said, Old Coach.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Rib, it was a win/win. The 9ers get excellent value and AS goes to a near playoff ready team. KC of 2013 could be the Colts of 2012. KC will now draft LJoeckel.

      • ninermd says:

With that O-line???? It’s back to square 1 with smith. The chiefs will not sniff the playoffs unless that o-line gets a lot better and the defense and…… It’s just like here Hoff. Without a lights out defense and running game. Alex smith an the chiefs will be bottom feeders. We robbed KC their fans know it an so does every writer in the nfl. I will pull for smith two times a year. Other than that I want to see him fail! Because he isn’t a 49er anymore.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, fair enough. So you don’t root for any non-9ers whatsoever?

      • claude balls says:

        @ ninermd:

The KC fans on the Arrowhead Pride site are as ignorant as some of the fans here. When you compare what the Chiefs allegedly are giving up to what was given up in the Matt Schaub, Charlie Whitehurst and Kevin Kolb trades, “robbery” would seem to be a particularly ignorant description.

Then again, you chanted for David Carr, so I’m not surprised.

      • whatnot says:

ninermd, you didn’t think that through. Unless I’m misunderstanding what the trade involves, why would you only pull for him 2x next season when the 2014 is conditional upon his and the Chiefs success?

      • ninermd says:

With damn near another first rd pick in their pocket for a qb that succeeded in one coaches system and was average at that. This is a huge steal. KC doesn’t have the team we did two years ago that can carry smith.
They will fail so will Alex.

Claude I forgot you know it all. Now you know more than sf and KC fans. Wheew! Glad you were right about smiths future here. Oh wait…. Always fishing for a fight. Get a life Claude and find out what a dime defense is while you’re at it.

Hoff…. Unless its against a team I hate. I don’t “root” for any other player on another team. And he will play the raiders twice so ill pull for him in those games.

      • claude balls says:

        @ ninermd:

Claude I forgot you know it all. Now you know more than sf and KC fans.

I don’t know about that. But I am comfortable I know more than the ignorant ones. You know, the ones who chanted for David Carr.

      • ninermd says:

Yeah Claude. The same ones that are chanting for ck now. It’s no secret Smith wasn’t and isn’t wanted here. You bought that jive, now swim in it. Smith isn’t what Harbaugh wanted in a qb. You thought he was. Take the pill and go to bed with this subject Claude. KC fans will be disappointed in their new qb. Remember to repost this when the time comes. Troll somewhere else. You’re tired and you have no more footing unless its a KC site.

      • ribico says:

        >>KC doesn’t have the team we did two years ago that can carry smith. They will fail so will Alex.

That 49ers team, one good for 15 wins, was amazing. KC’s team is nowhere near that, but with a new competent coach and QB, .500 is not unreasonable. Compared to 2 wins, that’s not fail.

      • rocket says:

It’s no secret Smith wasn’t and isn’t wanted here.

You mean your predictions of a great season, 20+ TD’s and support for Smith before this season was insincere? Gee and I truly thought the MD who used to rip Smith irrationally and call for scrubs to replace him had turned over a new leaf.

      • claude balls says:

Yeah, chanting for David Carr is the same thing as rooting for Colin Kaepernick. Wow, in addition to being ignorant, you really aren’t all that bright, are you? You really think Harbaugh elevated Kaepernick because he was dissatisfied with Smith’s game and not because of Kaepernick’s transcendent talent? Good thing you’re not letting your ignorant dislike of Smith cloud your perception.

    • Ed from AZ says:

Maybe Alex and Reid can revive the West Coast offense in KC. If they keep Bowe and have a good draft, they could have a wild-card berth next year.

  24. RobBob says:

Maybe the best result of this deal is the improvement in cap space? Draft choces are always a crap shoot. Look at the niners number 0ne in 2012

  25. Tyrant.com says:

You Smithers better start packing your winter woollies. Heard it gets pretty cold in kc in winter

  26. Alexsmith4mvp says:

What are the chances we trade KC second on draft day to a team for a 2014 1st rounder effectively getting a first rounder for Alex?

    • jgwindsor jaws says:

already effectively got a 1st round pick for AS with the #34 this year and a high rounder next year…. just depends if it is graded out as a middle 1st round pick or a low first round pick….

but i like the idea of having two picks that are not cap destroyers…..

  27. Hoferfan67 says:

Didn’t someone just this morning mention AS was going to Cleveland?

    • claude balls says:

I believe that Cfc and Bay were certain he was going to Cleveland.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Yes^ and this morning I posted a story about how the 49ers were not likely to trade within the division and it also mentioned that the Browns were “in the picture.”

I did/do think the Browns were the better fit.

      • rocket says:

That’s where I thought he was going a few weeks ago. Reconnecting with Norv in Cleveland seemed like a no brainer, but it’s obvious Reid wanted him more and once the Cardinals threw their hat into the ring I’m guessing the pick went from a 3rd to a 2nd which is why it was done this morning.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        claude balls says:

I believe that Cfc and Bay were certain he was going to Cleveland.
        ——————————
I’m so stubborn Im’ still voting no on the Poll question.

      • msclemons67 says:

I would agree with CC and Bay that Cleveland would have been a better fit.

  28. jgwindsor jaws says:

i am surprised KC didn’t get one of the niners 3rd round picks…..

will gonzales come back to the chiefs for one more year…..

is AS walking into the same situation OL wise as he did when he was drafted by the niners….at least he should be a bit smarter on pre-snap reads…..

how many wins will AS add to the KC win column….

    • jgwindsor jaws says:

those wins will determine if the 3rd round pick becomes a 2nd…..playoff appearance is not a factor

  29. RobBob says:

Why does most everyone believe getting a 2nd round pick and a conditional
pick in 2014 for the best quarterback available, FA or draft, with a track record is such a great deal for the niners.

    • old coach says:

RobBob i think most of us love it because its the #34 pick in the draft. Its not a whole lot different than a late 1st rd pick

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Yup. The 34 pick has a lot of value. Plus the 49ers now have 7.5 million more in cap space to keep key players, and gain more draft flexibility with less pressure to draft for “need.”

    • jgwindsor jaws says:

defensive depth in this years draft allows the niners the potential of having 3 highly graded defensive picks to resurrect niner defensive dominance….

again getting the #34 pick is like getting a low grade 1st round pick….and a mid 3rd round pick next year helps with maneuvering around in next years draft…and if KC gets a certain number of wins then it is a 2nd round pick which is like getting a middling first round pick this year if combined….

nothing wrong with that in my book

    • rocket says:

Because everybody assumes the Niners would not carry Smith and his salary to be a backup which I’m guessing they might if the trade was not to their liking.

The deal fits with others made in recent years with the exception of Palmer to the Raiders which was well a Raider deal.

Yea, im back needed a break afther superbowl loss anyways good luck to alex in kc

  31. Jai says:

Congrats Alex. You needed to go to a QB guru type coach, and you did with Andy Reid. No bad feelings on my part, just was never really a fan. Good luck

What a trade for the 49ers! Two 2nd round picks this year and next? Wow!

Now, what to do with all of those picks? A lot! So much. But for starters…..

Don’t trade for Percy Harvin. Trade up for Tavon Austin instead. He is the perfect playmaker for Kap to utilize. He can play outside, the slot, RB, and KO return all at a high level. The 49ers will avg 30 plus a game for sure if they get this dude. Defenses will go nuts worrying about Kap, LMJ, Austin etc.

After that, the 49ers can still address the DL, DB, and LB with quality, because of the historic depth on defense in this draft. And you can rest assure that Baalke won’t miss. Best GM in the league

  32. michael says:

keep the picks cut Rogers, Sign Goldson. Draft Defensive line, either 2 WRs or 1 WR or DB that can return kicks and a kicker

  33. Brodie2Washington says:

What great news. In one move the 49ers made cap room to re-sign some some/all of Goldson, RJF, Walker, Sopoaga, Grant.

This not only increases the 49ers trade value, but brings extra draft flexibility too since there’s less pressure to draft for “need.” The 49ers can draft depth on D-line as planned, or grab a BPA WR, CB or even an O-lineman.

  34. shawnrhod says:

I don’t think it is a bad deal for KC. I think AS brings stability. They have a near-complete team. Just need a new coaching staff to come in and stabilize. Just like JH did for the Niners.

This is not hwy robbery. I think the Niner and chief fans are over reacting to this deal. Sure a 3rd round would of been more ideal, but Chiefs don’t have many whole and they hedged their bets for stability. A new coach. A new QB, game manager. A good D. A great running game. All A’s for KC.

    Go Niners…

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Alex Smith is a SMART QB in a QB sparse draft/FA year. He be only 29 next year, entering the prime age for QBs. KC is getting a coach on the field. A good trade for both teams.

  35. Brodie2Washington says:

The 49ers have picks 31, 34, 61, 74, 93. According to the draft value chart
    http://walterfootball.com/draftchart.php trading picks 31+34 pick would get a 13th. Picks 31+34+74 would fetch a 9th.

The value chart is a very rough guideline. The higher up the draft, the less accurate. For example, the top pick in 2012 easily had twice the value 7th. This year the top pick clearly does not.

The buzz is that 2013 is deep but not flashy draft, with three of four “talent plataues.”
    1) Picks 1-6 have roughly the same talent
    2) Picks 7-20 are close behind
    3) Then a slight talent drop picks 21-40
    4) Many solid players hidden after picks 41 or so

The 49ers challenge is to trade their 12 trade-able picks up into plateaus 2 and 3. The possibilities are endless. This is going to be fun!

    • Grant Cohn says:

If the 49ers want Sharrif Floyd, they’d have to trade 31, 34, 93 and next year’s No.1 to the Raiders for the No.3 pick.

      • shawnrhod says:

I have no problem trading next year’s #1 assuming there was a plausible talent. I haven’t full vetted the draft class. So not sure what to do, BUT…

I would anticipate a swap of #1′s next year with the Raiders since they always suck. Then the Niners would be in position to draft the badest WR to come out since Charles Johnson. Marqise Lee from USC will be a Junior coming out early and be a top 3 pick. The Niners the Julio Jones to offset the White/Crabtree.

      • jgwindsor jaws says:

don’t think niners would want to pay top three money for a WR since again they are a TE run oriented team and will remain a running team….so the focus will be to find Gore’s replacement for a inexpensive price…..

if CK is really a savant don’t really need a super duper WR …. CK will make any WR better….so just find a NFL quality WR and stick to the original niner plan

again the biggest thing that happened for the niners is that they got a cohesive coaching staff that basically came in together on the same train and had already worked together for a couple of years….that is what really turned the niners around

also in my opinion it is AS play that afforded the niners the #34 pick and AS should feel respected for garnering jewel for the niners and the niners fans should also respect AS for getting them that pick….

        ——————————————-
Assuming we’re in the SB again next year that offer is still nearly 300 points short of the #3 slot. You’d also have to include our #61 pick or a player.

    • go49ers says:

Exactly right! and the rest of pick trade out to 2014.

  36. Big niner says:

The cool thing is if we don’t move in the draft, we’ll have the next to last pick the first day and the first the next day. Pretty cool.

  37. daniners says:

    Niners will not trade up.
    31st pick – Jesse Williams
    34th pick – Margus Hunt

They can find talented DB’s in round 2-4. Cannot find impact DT’s or pass rushers. Hunt will be a beast in 2-3 years.

    • Sean in Canada says:

I listened to Hunt being interviewed on Sirius this afternoon. They raved about his size but mentioned he’s very raw having only played football for a couple years coming from Estonia. 34th might be too high for him but perhaps late second or early 3rd?

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Agreed. I like Hunt, but Baalke frequently mentions how he values “natural football instincts” game film over measurables. I don’t seem Baalke taking Hunt at 31/34. Late 2nd or early 3rd maybe.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Margus will be 26 in July. I think the rookie contract max is 4 or 5 years. If the 49ers did draft him, he better not take 2-3 years to become starter material.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Brodie, that’s the time frame Pat Kirwan gave after the interview. They didn’t mention his age though. At 6’8″ would he be worth a mid round pick for some spot duty on the d line and a couple fg blocks?

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Sean: Hunt is very tempting. I like him. I also like that he did discuss and shot put at SMU… as did Michael Carter.

His track skills mean he not only has weight room strength, but practical strength and explosiveness.

But will Baalke go against he own “film over statistics” philosophy and grab a project player?

      • Scooter_McG says:

He’s a great athlete but not a great football player. If he can learn the position and how to stay low (that is probably his biggest issue atm – in the DL drills he constantly got very tall) I think he would be an ideal DE for the 49ers 1-gap 3-4.

But I just don’t like that he’ll be 26 by the time the season starts yet he has lots of learning to do. Some guys are getting their 2nd contract by the time he’ll be getting his first. Even if he pans out, after his rookie contract the team that drafts him will have a huge decision to make – whether they should give a big contract to a guy that has already hit 30.

  38. KezarMike says:

Alex trade a bit hard to believe. A bonanza if true. There might be bad team desperate at the start of the second round to draft a QB. 49ers might be able to trade that for that team’s 2014 no. 1, which could be a top 10. Or even trade our no.1 this year for a no. 1 next year. We wouldn’t lose much with KC’s no. 2 this year. Tons of possibilities. Of course, as in the Raiders’ trade of Gruden, when they got two no.1s and two no.2s. You still gottta pick the right players, cause the Raiders didn’t do that and stunk for the next few years.

  39. jgwindsor jaws says:

    liked tom tolbert’s comment ….

AS was a victim of the kap

  40. Sean in Canada says:

If/when this trade becomes official, I’ll be happy/surprised with the return. I was thinking a 3rd rounder and conditional in 2014 but the 33rd pick this year and a conditional in 2014 is solid.
Good luck Alex, wish you all the best.

  41. Where's Froman says:

Bring in Froman as backup to Kapernick. He was faster than Kap in all of his combine drills and would be very cheap. Same style player as well. Look him up.

  42. undercenter says:

I see Revis a problem child. He signs a contract and then after a year he wants to re-do it. Holds out if he doesnt get a new one. Doesnt honor his contract which means he doesnt honor his word. A good football player he is but is he worth the trouble? I dont think so, but thats my world. However coming to a potential Super Bowl team can change a way a man thinks.

  43. dc9er says:

Revis’s injury and overall attitude concerns me. I dont want someone that is a shadow of their former self taking up a roster spot. So if he’s brought in i hope the niner’s do their homework on the guy first.

  44. Johnny Unitas for Governor says:

    Note to Mr. Everything:
Colin may win a Super Bowl someday, however, not while playing for Coach Jim Harbaw. The man is wound too tightly. Way too tightly. Sad, huh?
