49ers confident they will trade Alex Smith

Yahoo is reporting that an Alex Smith trade is “effectively complete.” ESPN reports a Smith trade is not complete, and the 49ers are still talking with more than one team, but the Niners are confident they will be able to trade Smith when the new league year starts on March 12th.  Either way, it looks like Alex Smith will not be a 49er next season.

ESPN reports the Chiefs and the Cardinals are the two teams most interested in Smith.

Stay tuned as we learn more information.

Goodluck Alex Smith. For all the 8 years of failure and success you stood in there like a man. But in my opinion we have upgraded tremendously. Be well smith..

  2. BOS49er says:

Best of Luck to Alex Smith who if nothing else handled everything he has been through with class and dignity. I hope he does well wherever he goes but like Steelamtic I think we have a very bright future ahead of us at QB

  3. Coffee's for closers says:

Well so far I’ve been wrong about most of my guesses and thoughts on this subject so I’m sure I’ll eventually add these as well to the pile of shame but I’ll be simply dumbfounded if they trade him to the Cardinals. It would have to be a crazy to turn down type deal and I guess they did that once before for Kolb so maybe they’re dumb enough to do it again.

    • Mr. Everything says:

      CFC

Please clarify your dumbfoundedness. You will be dumbfounded at the Cardinals’ stupidity for trading for 2 mediocre QBs in 3 years? Is that what you mean? That’s what it looks like you mean, but that seems inconsistent with who you havealways been in relation to Alex Smith.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Mr. E sure, as long as you clarify why the only purpose you apparently seem to serve around here is to be an antagonistic di ck hole?

      • Mr. Everything says:

        CFC

Most d*ckholes are antagonistic to their member daddies, as their sole purpose is to excrete, rather than intake. Now, in your case, you may be a receiver of sorts for all I know, for you certainly don’t give much.

Be a smart CFC and re-read the post, and reply to it, or don’t, but don’t take it for what it wasn’t. What it wasn’t was a dig at you; what it was, was seeking clarity on your position. All is moot now, CFC, for you are probably no longer dumbstruck, seeing as how your blather is all over the blog of late.

Smokescreen season is in full force. One week we get a report from Mortenson that the trade market for Smith is soft and a week later a report is leaked that a deal is all but done. You can’t trust anything you hear at this time of the offseason. All we can do is take a look at it from another teams vantage point to see if Smith is worth trading for.

There are a number of teams that could use him but only a small number in position to actually bring him in due to Salary cap or overall team competitiveness. I’ve personally narrowed down the possibilities to 3:

KC, Arizona and Cleveland. Three teams where Smith would be the unquestioned starter and a step up in quality along with enough parts around him that they could be much more competitive in a shorter amount of time. I think KC fits the best due to the system and talent in place and I think Reid would like a veteran QB to work with rather than taking a chance on a rookie from a lackluster class of prospects. I think Smith will be a Chief with either their 3rd round pick this year coming back in return or a conditional pick in 2014. Either way I think they will get something for him and they should considering the dearth of options around the league right now.

    • Adam says:

” You can’t trust anything you hear at this time of the offseason.”

Or during the regular season. :P

      • rocket says:

        Ain’t that the truth.

      • Drafter says:

One key thing to remember is that Mortenson said that before the combine.

In general, the QB’s as a class have performed poorly at the combine so teams that were looking at taking a QB are now looking back at the free agent market.

    • AES says:

Geno Smith turned some heads during the combine. Since Reid will likely be given a two year honeymoon he may not feel the pressure to produce right aeay and with Geno rather than Alex.

      • MidWestNiner says:

He turned heads, but he didn’t wow anybody. He had the same problem that most of the QBs did in that they were throwing to the WR and not where the WR should be. Doing that in the NFL will result in incompletions and interceptions.

  5. rocket says:

This if off topic but a real surprise, Cullen Jenkins was released by the Eagles today. Personally I would contact his agent immediately and try to get something done. He’s 32, but is a really stout player against the run and can rush the passer much like the Cowboy. Depending on his salary demands he’d be a great guy to sign on a 2 or 3 year deal.

  6. BOS49er says:

A bit off topic here but Kaep inastgramed a pic that AJJ joined him in ATL. In the pic AJJ looks thicker to me than he did in the stock pics of him from the training camp. What do Yall think?

    • Razoreater says:

I think he looks too relaxed, but I’m glad he finally showed up.

      • BigP says:

Yeah, because he should be rocking eye black and cleats on the couch. Eye roll.

      • Razoreater says:

I understand the lack of humor after losing the Super Bowl mate. Eye roll back at ya.

      • BigP says:

        Razor,
You are starting to sound like DS and her anti-Crabtree assumptions from a year ago with your Jenkins bashing. What Super Bowl? *Cold sweats, hallucinations*

      • Razoreater says:

Not bashing anyone there chippy, but I need to be shown something before I give someone the benefit of the doubt. So far, my eyes are drinking doubt. That does not mean much though, because I’m not his coach. So I wouldn’t get too lathered up dude.

      • claude balls says:

If you have to be shown something first, then you aren’t giving the benefit of the doubt.

      • BigP says:

        Claude,
Thank you. You are speaking common sense, which seems to be the third or fourth language around here sometimes.

      • rocket says:

        Razoreater,

There’s really no other option than giving him the benefit of the doubt. He didn’t play; you can’t form a reasonable opinion on the kid based on your suspicions of why he didn’t.

      • claude balls says:

        @ BigP:

You may come to regret the kind words. I was just about to tell you to slow your roll with the “Alex is mediocre” nonsense.

I don’t know why, but people around here seem awfully eager to judge players and find them wanting.

      • Razoreater says:

Alex Smith would be a guy that got alot of benefit of the doubt.

      • BigP says:

        Claude,
That’s okay that you think it’s nonsense, the lukewarm interest for his services in a league starved for QB talent validates my statement.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Unless you have inside information from each team BigP, your own statement has no way of being validated.

      • claude balls says:

        @ BigP:

I find it intriguing that you have enough information to conclude that the interest has been lukewarm. What else can you tell us with such certainty about possible NFL trades? Will your same sources tell you which players each team is going to draft?

Also, do we know how many teams combine the perceived need for a QB, the cap space to add Smith’s contract and the draft capital to interest SF? That would seem to be relevant.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Who cares if interest is hot or cold? Get a good draft pick and move on. The next question is who is the backup in a backup starved league?

      • BigP says:

        Midwest and Claude,
There is no bidding war or recruiting battle for Smith. He isn’t viewed as highly around the league as he is by some fans. He is the best available option in a down year for QB’s in the draft. You guys take it personal, I’m just stating the obvious. Despite only being 28 years old, he isn’t viewed as a player that you build a franchise around. If he was, many teams would be trying to outbid each other to land him. If he was as good as you think he is, he would have been franchised last year.

Matt Schaab (Swap 1st round picks and receive two 2nd round picks)
Carson Palmer (1st and 2nd round pick)
Kevin Kolb (Dominique Rodgers Cromartie and 2nd round pick)
Charlie Whitehurst (Swap 2nd round picks and receive a 3rd round pick)
        Matt Cassel (2nd round pick)
        A.J. Feeley (2nd round pick)

      • claude balls says:

        @ BigP:

Seeing as how NFL decision makers just arrived in Indy this weekend for the combine and just had a chance to see the draft eligible QBs up close, I think you may be judging the market a tad prematurely.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Who’s taking it personal BigP? I”m saying that unless you have inside infomation from all of theNFL teams your statement has nothing to back it up with. Furthermore, take a look at most of the QBs that you listed. Most weren’t starters or had as much as Smith is going to be paid. In other words, they were way overvalued. That list is a pretty weak arguement if you ask me.

      • AngusinCanada says:

        BigP,
You have zero idea of the level of demand for Alex Smith’s services within the NFL. To suggest you do only highlights the fact that you don’t.

So-called “reporters” like Schefter, Mortensen, John Clayton, et al have no clue. How do you?

      • BigP says:

        Claude,
Everybody in the NFL knows everything they need to know about the QB’s from an athletic and football standpoint. The medical checks and interviews are what they focus on at the combine. There isn’t a Luck or RG3 in this years draft, there isn’t anybody even remotely close. If there was, the Chiefs would be drafting them with the #1 pick.

      • rocket says:

        BigP,

After looking at some of the names on that list there is little doubt the Niners will get a decent pick for Smith.

There might not be a bidding war or high demand, but that’s more due to the cap problems some of the QB needy teams are in more than the view of Smith.

I agree with you that nobody sees him as a franchise QB, but teams with a QB need aren’t looking for a franchise QB; they are looking for a guy they can plug in and win some games with which is what Smith is in the right situation. If indeed he does go to KC, it’s pretty much assured they will draft a QB as well to develop behind him and after what Smith has been through, there isn’t a QB who could handle that better.

      • BigP says:

        Angus,
The fact that the Niners didn’t franchise him last year shows you how much they value him, and how in demand his services are. The contract they gave him also shows you how much they value him, but he had to take it because there was no other demand for his services. If there was an elite NFL QB prospect in this years draft, do you think we would be talking about Smith to the Chiefs? No, because they would be picking that elite QB prospect with the first overall pick.

      • MidWestNiner says:

This is taking it personal BigP:

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AGFeQ60-TY

      • Nick says:

What some of you don’t get is that you can’t just plug Alex Smith into a lineup and expect to win right away. He needs to be completely familiar and comfortable in an offense in order to be effective. Otherwise, he’s non-functional, in the words of his former coach Urban Meyer.

      • BigP says:

        Midwest,
Lmao. That clip never gets old. When I said taking it personally, I mean that sometimes people tend to take everything said about Smith as criticism, even if it isn’t meant as such. Which is **sniff, sniff**unfair. **sniff** You are talking about our **sniff, sniff** backup quarterback. That press conference is even more precious now.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Andy Reid runs a West Coast offense Nick. Smith is a West Coast QB so I think he would plug into Reid’s offense just fine.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Some do BigP but not me. I’m just saying that no one knows how interested teams are in Smith. We just learned this season that the Dolphins may have signed Smith last off-season but that Smith decided against it. So who knows how many teams may want Smith as their starting QB.

      • rocket says:

        Nick,

Since Meyer made that statement, Alex Smith has been through 8 years in the NFL learning a multitude of offenses. The latest one, he learned on his own and taught it to teammates during the lockout. Wherever he goes, he’ll be able to play fairly quickly because there is little he hasn’t seen as far as systems go.

    • Razoreater says:

We’ll see in about 6 months what Jenkins can do. When the guy can’t jump Ginn Jr. or Chad Hall then that’s a red flag. I don’t want to hear the excuses, gobble gobble.

    • George says:

Thanks for the picture. Yes, he looks like he has some bulk now. Next year’s starting lineup should tell us everything.

    • Mr. Everything says:

Nobody gonna b*tch out as long as Kaep’s in charge — what a difference it makes to have a team leader with a ginormous sack. Just like Joe Montana. Just like Michael Jordan.

  7. Old coach says:

I think AS will end up with K.C. but i do’nt think we will receive any extra picks. I think we will swap our 3rd from carolina for the chiefs 3rd and our 4th for the chiefs 4th. possibly giving us 5 picks between approx #90 and 122

  8. BigP says:

Barrows is saying that no deal is in place to trade Smith, which seems more likely. If the Niners had a deal in place, they would be the last to leak it to the media. It benefits them to have teams competing against each other for Smith’s services right up until the point he is traded.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/25/report-niners-dont-have-a-deal-in-place-for-alex-smith/

    • Shoupbj says:

I would leak it immediately hoping that somone might try to one up the offer. However, Im calling BS on this report I just dont see the Niners getting much for him. Scouts will look at him and see all the limitations sometimes less is more thats why teams gave up more for Flynn and Tebow than I expect the niners to get for Smith.

  9. Razoreater says:

Cornelius Washington lb Georgia looks good 6′ 4 265 4.5

    • Scooter_McG says:

I prefer Trevardo Williams of Connecticut. He has production to back up his combine results. Good speed, good strength for his size, and also did well in the explosion drills.

  10. OREGONINER says:

I think that the next two weeks are gonna’ be fun….If I were Alex Smith, I’d refuse all of the proposed trades…threaten retirement if necessary. Tell his agent that he wants more than they offer, screw up all of the best laid plans of Harbaalke and demand his release…after March 12th of course. Get out the golf clubs, and remind JH about “judge Judy”. …”Alex Smith is our QB”. Yeah, it should be entertaining….

    • Pete says:

Then he can’t play until his deal is up with SF. He has already said he want’s to start, or, did ya miss that part while coming up with your whack idea? How are those Raiders doing? ready for another 4-12 season?

    • BigP says:

Yeah, because it usually ends very well for mediocre players who throw their weight around. For somebody who is constantly applauded for his intelligence, it was stupid of him to sign that contract last year. He has nobody to blame but himself. Smith should look in the mirror and tell himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DIETlxquzY

      • BOS9er says:

        Big P
He had no choice but to sign. If a 13-3 team offers u 9 mil to start for them when no other team has, U sign. Especially if u believe in ur talent to get another mega deal

      • rocket says:

        BigP,

My guess is he believed he was the future in SF after the way year one went. He obviously liked Harbaugh and his situation and wanted it to continue so signing for 3 years was preferable to 1.

I see no way he becomes a malcontent over where he wants to play. He knows the business and if the team finds a trade partner my guess is he goes and trys to make the best of it.

      • BigP says:

        Bos9er,
I understand where you are coming from about the offer. My point was, and I said it last offseason, is that if Smith thought he was worth more (which he apparently did) then he should have signed for one year and balled out. He would have been in a position of strength now. He decided to sign the three year contract, which was a great deal for the 49ers, and he is now limited because of it.

    • Mr. Everything says:

You’re an idiot, Oregon. Alex is just as impotent in terms of controlling his destination as was as a QB. He’ll take whatever hand he’s dealt and like it.

      • claude balls says:

        Smh.

      • AngusinCanada says:

        Mr. Everything,
I have to join Claude in the head shaking here.
Why don’t you take a break, and go slander Drew Brees or Steve Young or something…

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Angus

        Slander? Really, buy a dictionary.

Brees is as phony as they get. Young is as soft as they get. And Alex, for all his charm, toughness, and hard work, is as impotent as they get from under center.

And he has absolutely no power to dictate terms. The Niners will take his wishes into consideration, and the they will dispatch of him with typical icy efficiency.

Claude does a lot of the shaking of his hips, I hear. Which is a good thing. I too like to get jiggy.

      • OREGONINER says:

        Everything

It’s too early to be drinking this heavily…at least wait until you’re of legal age.

  11. Razoreater says:

Nice seeing the brothers sitting together at the combine. Blood is thicker than water.

  12. Razoreater says:

Datone Jones looks like the truth.

  13. Scooter_McG says:

I was looking over the WR positional drills and the guys that stood out to me were Tavon Austin (looked very fast and sure in everything he did), Robert Woods (very smooth athlete, even if he didn’t test amazingly), Mark Harrison (big guy, looks like a TE, but moved well and showed pretty good hands), Justin Hunter (for such a tall WR he looked extremely athletic in the drills, and has the long speed to be a match up problem at every level), and Traverus King (another guy that looked smooth in everything he did, and caught well).

Patterson and Hopkins also looked pretty good, but didn’t stand out. Terrance Williams started off well in the drills, but faded. Stedman Bailey didn’t stand out either, and had some drops – though he did have the unenviable task of going after Tavon Austin in every drill. The guy I like, Markus Wheaton, ran his routes well (and ran them with purpose as if he was in a game situation), but got himself out of control on occasion leading to drops. Ryan Swope who tested well looked pretty bad in the drills. He didn’t look under control at all.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Thanks for the breakdown.

Do you think Austin is a deep threat? He’s fast, but he’s short and he does not have long arms or an impressive vertical leap. He was an underneath receiver and running back in college.

I really like Justin Hunter. I think he could climb into the first round.

      • Scooter_McG says:

I think Austin can be a deep threat due to his elusiveness, but it won’t be his bread and butter. He should be used more like Percy Harvin is with the Vikings.

Hunter has had a very impressive combine. My biggest knock on him is his hands, but he looked pretty sure-handed in drills. With his athleticism and height, if he can learn to consistently catch away from his body he could turn out to be one of the most dangerous WRs in this draft. I don’t know if he will be a 1st rounder, but he’s probably solidified a spot in the 2nd round, maybe even top 50.

A guy that intrigues me is Mark Harrison. He looked much better than I expected, and tested very well. Could be worth a mid to late round pick.

    • dc9er says:

thanks for posting that Scooter i dont have cable so i cant watch the combine.

  14. Mr. Everything says:

What can we do to get Jadeveon Clowney in 2014? Can we pull an Indianapolis?
