49ers RSS feed
the fourth quarter is the comeback quarter
4th quarter magic? Let’s go 49ers!!
Culliver is having a nightmare of a week.
Rattle Flacco
Hilarious commercial with Deion Sanders.
Jam the damn recievers!!!!!!!!!
The 49ers D is making Joe Flacco look like Joe Montana.
Hold here D.
Ok fourth quarter. I’ve got a bed reserved in ICU-Cardiac
Great job D!
nice D
Damn we had a sack!!!!!!!!!! M#thaf*cka!
Big time stop there.
Who would have thought Flacco was so mobile?
Glad we at least held them to 3
Alright we need another TD now. Get the momentum back.
Not good to hear that Akers is dinged up more.
Cmon offense!
Mossy!
Good throw Kaep.
This game is totally rigged. If the Ravens win, I am done with pro football, forever.
They should just call it the East Coast Football League.
that’s my boy, Frank!!
Pound it Pound it Pound it!!!!
Ravens are tired, 37-31 niners
That wasn’t going anywhere.
If Kap runs it in the place will explode
i called it!
KKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEPPPPPP!!
YEAH!!!!! KAP!!!
kaep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoooooooooooooooooo!
Great TD run Kaep, but don’t start Kaepernicking until we are ahead.
Jesus Kaepernicking Christ
That drive was Kaepernickian!
damn……..missed the 2 point conversion
2-point conversion fails. Rigged game.
damn we are down an akers FG
Defense we need a three and out like right now.
That two point conversion needed to be thought out better.
Td!
now we need a stop on defense.
We need the D to step up!
This game is going to give me a freakin heart attack!!!!!
Damn he got rid of that fast
Kap u have to give moss a chance to catch that ball! Its a conversion! !!
Golden Wall Defense where ya at??! Time to step up like champs in the 4th quarter!
Defense stiffen!!!
c’mon defense, show us who you are.
Ed Reed was like a half yard behind the line of scrimmage on that two point try. Where the F is the flag?
I smell a turnover
This game is over
In a good way
something must be lost in translation for you. we’re down by 2 with 8 and a half minutes to play
It was 3rd and 9 and then they gave him a call
Culliver? why?
Son of a B$tch pass interference
How many times are you going to hurt the D Culliver?
That was a TERRIBLE call…
Culliver having a bad game.
He’s this years Kyle Williams.
Can we get a call?
Come on Ahmad don’t give up!!
I saw that too, he looked confused.
They are holding like hell on the o-line
Get to Flacco defense.
Cmon D stop them!
They need to get pressure. Aldon is man on man on the outside and is getting handled.
BS..he was short. Bad spot.
1st down? What kind of freakin spot is that?!@
where is brooks?…….someone needs to stop this roll out
Spinning around in circles searching for the ball downfield
Good call Jim!
He was absolutely short on that play. The side judge gave them the 1st down. He did not get it.
He’s short, even online it said……….
Last Play 1st-10, Baltimore 46
“Joe Flacco passed to Anquan Boldin to the right for 8 yard gain”
Yup should be where he was sitting (hips)
Classic commercial right there!
We need a Montana Miracle stain!
Yes we do…come on D!!!!
What the hell is Harbaugh thinking?
It was a good challenge
High risk, low reward.
He was short but I don’t like that challenge
I do, he WAS short!
Need a stop. Time is becoming an issue.
Great challenge by Jim.
This game is so TOTALLY rigged.
Damn you boldin
damnit. these first downs are killing us.
gotta make plays. pure and simple
And the secondary blows it again. This area really needs addressed in the offseason.
Aldon Smith has been horrible today. He cant tackle!
One more stop D.
MOnster 3rd down coming………
wow, what a eff up
Two offsides at the same time?!
It doesn’t matter. THey TRIED to give Boldin the first down and up in the booth they had to admit to each other if they didn’t give SF that call, the fix would be so obvious there would have been calls for congressional hearings into fixing of NFL games and particularly this Super Bowl.
gonna need a TD drive
plenty of time to win this game.
Great stop D!
HUge stop but i wish we didn’t give up any points at all.
At least the niners don’t have to worry about akers.
4 minutes to go, Kaepernick needs a touchdown to win.
Holy crap.
It doesn’t get any better than this.
Look if the powers that be want the MURDERER to go out with another SB win then who are we to argue with the NFL.
I will argue with the NFL to this end – if the Ravens win, there are enough egregious examples of terrible officiating, clearly in the Ravens’ favor, if they win, the NFL is now WWE, UFC or MMA, and any self-respectingAmerican Male will go fishing next Super Bowl Sunday.
We should have the last drive of the game right now
Put yourself among the greats Kaep!
This is where championships are won. C’mon!
wow….looks like its up to offense to do this
the next 3 minutes is what separates the 49ers from the other 31 teams…….go niners……we got this.
Kaep this is your moment to put your name up their with best. Go get em.
Kap has to use his legs on the Ravens defense right here. They are going to blitz him. He has to burn them. Watch VD!
HERE WE GO!
Here is Kaepernick’s chance to join the all time greats.
This is his chance to join Joe. If he wins this, it will be maybe a better, more courageous win than XXIII. But the officials will rig it so the Ravens win.
And so they did.
All Gore all day long
Good move Kaep.
Legs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vernon you have to catch that!!!!
VD damn
Vernon drop nooooooo!
Make that catch Davis!
Great catch Crabtree.
Crabtree = best hannds in the NFL
you ain’t lying harbs!!
Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooore!
GORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They’re moving too fast ! leaving too much time on the clock
Now w need to chew clock.
Love it when Gore is chugging along.
Eric Davis just said on KNBR radio “This is Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!”
Davis is a shill for the East Coast Bias. Screw Eric Davis. He sold the 49ers out when the took the NFL Network job. Merton Hanks when he took the league-office job.
we need to bleed more time off the clock
We NEED to score a TD and play championship defense!
23 wats up man up by 2 war y’all think???
Slant to crabtree like the one in the in the Falcon game where he fumbled. Or throw that flare to Vernon that we scored on in the atlanta game.
Lebron killed that Samsung commercial.
NO run option wtH?
Glad I came back to the blog needed this strength to get there thank god
Not a good play-call.
Vernon Davis up the seam, Crabs slant, or fade to Moss?
Kaep needs to manage the time better.
wow
If you throw, throw to the end zone1!!
Here we go
We got this don’t worry guys we bout to go up pistol we good
this is intense
God what was that…..#7
That was just a completely foolish play-call.
Old school quick slant would have been better on the blitz.
geez well it was a great season and looking foward to next year.
One of the worst series of play calls I have ever seen. Get the ball into the end zone. Unreal. I don’t know what to say. This should have been the greatest come back in Super Bowl history and the coaching staff blew it.
Bad sequence of plays there.
That series of plays and the delay time out cost the 9ers the game.
Motherf**king piece of s**t refs. You just cost us the game you f**king c**suckers.
Boger’s crew was not the highest rated. They got the Super bowl due to affirmative action.
That’s what I was saying earlier. Boger was just a token. Thanks league for giving us the best crew for the biggest game you wankers.
we had this game…….damn i am pisssedd
Too many mistakes and bad game management doomed this team.
By the way, who calls a fade route on the final play of the SB when you need a TD to win?
Can we please replace Roman now?
1st and goal from the 9 without Ngata on the field and a defense that looks gassed. And no running plays? Seriously?
They were holding Crabs like hell on that last play we had. damn.
We should’ve taken the delay of game and saved the TO
John completely owns Jim.
You mean John completely owns the refs
Did anyone see that grab around the waist. That’s not holding?
HOLDING! Come on!!
Just another example of the Ravens coaching staff being a step ahead of the Niners staff. The punter just took eight seconds off the clock because the Niners didn’t even go after him.
Seems like a bad match-up for. Big brother has little brothers number.
Especially when big brother get’s some favorable calls.
I’m sorry Adam, this was a ‘rob job’ by the officials.
The one call that Harbaugh won the challenge on was not even close, yet the officials signaled a 1st down.
But all and all, great comeback, great game, great season!
When does next season start!
It wasn’t called well, for sure. But we’ve seen some softening of our defense for awhile now. I suspect we’re going to see some new faces on D. The secondary and run defense need some work. Our secondary got beat like a drum.
The offense should continue to get better, the more experience they get.
Jimbo could probably stand to take it down a notch, too. He seems hellbent to follow Ditka in to an early heart attack. He needs to be a bit more like John and Jack.
They tried but ravens where holding like crazy
I am done with professional football. They might as well call it the East Coast Football League. The fix was in the Super Bowl. The East Coast powers that be insisted on the scumbag, murdering, reprobate, POS, dirtball, rapist MFer Ray Lewis getting his ring to go out “on top.”
Never mind he’ll be in prison or dead within a year, either from murdering AGAIN, from dealing drugs with a deal gone bad, or from some form of violence for which he is arrested and imprisoned. He has been using banned substances, yet he was allowed to play. What is up with that?
Furthermore, the filthy dirtbag Lawrence Taylor has been in the hall of fame for more than 10 years, despite a criminal record as long as I-80 from Des Moines to San Francisco, while Eddie DeBartolo Jr. is kept out for one mistake he made.
Pro football is now on the same level as WWE, MMA or UFC. It’s all totally contrived and it’s all totally rigged. I feel badly for the San Francisco and other west coast players who are forced to endure this bias, and I hope they make their millions and get out as fast as they can, and move on to something with some honor. Needn’t be much, but from end to end, the NFL and it’s management have no honor, no scruples, no redeeming qualities.
I will not waste any more of what time I have left on a game that is so corrupted it, like Taylor and Lewis, is beyond redemption.
I hope the fish are biting next year.
I couldn’t agree more… in order for the Niners to win the SB in the 80′s we had to jump out by three touchdowns in the first quarter. I’m not happy with the play selection or game management from the sidelines either… A fade on fourth and goal from the 10??? The “mad scientist” just squandered the season…
Holding call!
What are these reds doing?
The Ray-Ray factor of a convicted liar got ther Ravens all the calls, the 49ers none.
I do believe that the NFL,NBA are really into defending the east coast .
There were very few penalties called the whole game.
Def holding on crabs would’ve been a td
Crabtree was also pushing off quite a bit. That missed call could have gone either way.
Pushing off??
I saw crabs trying to push off cuz db was holding him
Which has been called as OPI on other receivers in the past. Like I said, it could have gone either way.
You’re really a Ravens fan, that’s for effin sure.
Because I’ve seen that to happen to other players makes me a Ravens fan? That’s real smart.
Harbaugh, Vernon and Crabs all said at the press conference that it was a PI.
Even Stevie Wonder saw that hold.
It’s over. Let the indigestion begin.
Shut up, Ravens fan.
If I was a Ravens fan, I’d be celebrating and feeling sick to my stomach about the missed opportunites. Think before you post so that you don’t look so foolish.
Shut up, Ravens fan…
Need I say more?
No matter what Baltimore did…the refs were never going to call a thing. And why the refs should be investigated. You could see “Vegas” all over the look the other way.
Dude, F the refs. This team had plenty of chances to win. This coaching staff wasted opportunities throughout the game. This is on Harbaugh and the staff. They were the better team and they were beaten because the Ravens found every single little advantage they could. The Niners didn’t. A fade route with your last play?
We should have seen the blitz coming before the play happened too. Coaches had to know it was coming and had a play ready for it.
BigP, I agree I mentioned a few days ago I was worried about the Ravs D and JiHar getting out coached by his brother. I also said it would be very close. I loathe being correct.
Even the Jones return TD, it seems like he was told to bring it out even if he was deep. They saw that the Niners relaxed when the ball went that deep on kickoffs and caught them slipping.
Another Ravens fan.
Because BigP stated some facts? Go troll elsewhere McKevitt.
Lol, I’m the farthest thing from a Ravens fan there is. I am a die hard Niner fan and always have been. My point was that there were many little things that the Ravens saw and took advantage of. John Harbaugh was a very good special teams coach before he was a head coach, that kickoff return had his finger prints all over it. The Niners seemed caught off guard when he brought it out. They reacted like they thought he was going to take a knee.
I hate that we were so undisciplined early on with the penalty and playing the deep ball by the DB’s.
Let’s also not forget the fake FG that failed but still pinned the Niners deep in their own territory and the masterful he handled that safety, effectively any hope that Kaep and the offense could pull off a last second miracle. Those two also has the fingerprints of John Harbaugh all over them.
A bigger problem was that they allowed Flacco to get comfortable in the pocket way too often.
Yea MidWestNiner, i kept mentioning during the first half that the pocket was too clean for Flaco. He is known for having trouble if you can get a push up the middle to get him off his launching point and force him to his left. Flaco loves throwning deep to his right but struggles deep to the left side of the field.
You’re a Ravens fan. Your posts today belie everything you ever wrote.
TROLL ALERT! TROLL ALERT!
Watch’em give the MVP to OJ Simpson oops I mean Ray Lewis. I get the two murderers confused sometimes.
Classic comment!
I agree…. He’ll be on death row in a year.
I guess that’s what we get for using “Rooney Rule Refs”… affirmative action at its finest.
Well at least we don’t pick last in the draft. :p
INT, Fumble, KO return, and the last series. Now 5-1…damn!!!
add 2/9 3rd down conversion
Then Kap int was bad but the Ravens did not score off that turnover on their possession so it was not like the L.James fumble. The fumble by James was crushing because the Ravens scored off it on that drive. The Ko return was a back breaker.
Unfortnuately, Kaps inexperience showed a couple of times in this one. He had to know you cant overthrow your man on 4th down or on a conversion. He overthrew moss on the conversion and he overthrew crabtree on 4th down in the last drive. Taking that timeout was huge. That came back to haunt us. Our lack of creativity in the red zone killed us one last time.
I really thought there might be a Kap run in the red zone once we got so close.
The 2nd down call was going to be a Kaepernick run, but he didn’t get the ball snapped in time and they burned a time out.
The lost play they took the Timeout on was a designed Kaep run
Hopefully Kaep can get off plays better next season. We needed that timeout.
on conversions or a 4th down you MUST keep the ball in the field of play even if it gives the DB a chance at the ball u can not overthrow and not even give ur WR an opportunity to come down with the ball.
Im with everyone else in being befuddled as to why the didnt stick with a CK run (even after the timeout) he is 6’5 with those long strides if he takes 2 steps and dives thats 6 yards right there. Id love a sprint out with a run pass option
Reed was offsides on the two point conversion. Go back and watch it, he was at least a foot behind the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped. They should not have called a fade route on the last play, that was a stupid play call. The whole last series of play calls was terrible. He played well after the jitters went away. The Ravens were a step ahead in every facet of the game.
yes. but missed plays all around. so many poor coverages, weak pass rushes, etc. no one played great, and today we needed whole units to come up big time.
Great points Jordan, sucks but we have a young team and you never know. I do like this better then singletarys rain!
Everyone was nice rooting for the team this season looking forward to next season and talking about the draft with you all.
Ray Lewis showed Williams how to prison rape Crabtree on that last play.
I give credit to the Niners for putting on a great comeback, and almost getting over the hump, after playing poorly in the first half.
bottom line: we were atrocious in the first half, and that was too much to come back from. whether we beat ourselves or got beat hardly matters – we didnt execute on both sides of the ball, and we got consistently outhit in the first half. down 28-6 was spotting them too much.
Fes
Ur absolutely right. We get caught up in the way the game ended and almost forget that the first half we were blown out of the watter and could not make a play when we needed to. From Brooks penalty on 3rd down right before the Boldin TD to Crabs drop on the other end where we settled for a FG there were way to many missed opportunities. Whitner and Cullliver had terrible games. Culliver gets consistently picked on especcialy on the deep routes. Lloyd, baldwin, jjones all beat him up the sidelines late in the season and in this case he compounded the issue by jumping late thus being out of position to tackle jacoby jones after the catch. Whitner was spinning in circles out there and he looked really lost in coverage which was never his strong point.
As bad as this hurts Im happy about the season we had and the general direction this teem seems to be headed in. I hope we can get back here soon and avenge what should have been SB #6
I’m sick. We almost had this. Penalties, wasted timeouts, no call on holding, some bad playcalling.
5-1
‘I helped to kill two people” what a wonderful person I am. Garbage human being.
We had the game and 4 bad play calls, not to mention a whole bunch of uncalled Holding penalties, screwed it up… I’m pissed right now
Roman, Roman, Roman. Is that the best they could come up with on the final 4 downs inside the 10?
I was expecting a post route and catch for either Crab or vernon.
Moss in the corner.
Robbed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There will be an ugly taste in my mouth because of the no call on the hold against Crabtree.
These officials should be heavily fined and suspended next season for not calling a fair game.
Arrrrrrgh@!#@#$
Amen. I haven’t seen this bad of reffing since week 3 this season when we had the little league refs
Proud to be niner. Next year we will have our sixth.
Love you guys. Now I’ll gow drown my sorrows.
We have a shot next year but getting to the Super Bowl is never guaranteed.
Next year I’ll be out of state, fishing.
5-1…
Game was rigged…all I have to say..
I still can’t believe they didn’t throw a flag on that guy hugging Anthony Dixon on that safety. Bring back the replacement refs
I completely agree… i saw that and was just sad.
Ravens got away with a lot of penalties not being called on them.
20-20 hindsight says if ref called the hold against Dixon (which was right in his face), NIners would have had 5 extra seconds on the clock. Ginn ran it back to 50 yard line. That would have meant a 65 yard try for Akers. Not gonna happen.
Anquan Boldin was a beast tonight. Culliver and Rogers and Whitner were helplessly over matched.
Boldin was getting a free release most of the night. He struggles with press, i don’t know why he wasn’t challenged more often.
Well, crap.
Amazing how the Ravens can play an entire SB without a freakin penalty. #Disgusted.
Proud of the Niners, though. They never gave up and almost had the biggest comeback in SB history. Already looking forward to next year :-)
They actually called 2 penalties against the Ravens, but they were ones the Reffing team could not get away without calling (hitting the kicker and roughing the passer). Other than that the Ravens could do what they wanted (holding, late hits, pass interference) and the reffing team would not throw a single yellow flag.
Can’t watch the post game BS. Can’t stand Flacco and ready Lewis and CBS bites.
Well, there goes our winning streak in superbowls as well as the No Int streak.
Not the way I envisioned it.
4 plays with goal to go and no Gore or Kap runs? I just don’t get it…
Nova,
We mauled them all the way down the field. We get to the 6 and throw too much. That wasn’t how we got down field. Our playcalling has been suspect for 2 seasons.
I would’ve loved to have seen that misdirection to Gore again.
Yup. Red Zone offense is horrendous.
I accept the forgiveness of the people who were so ridiculous toward me. 5-1 is what I predicted. I STILL LOVE MY 49ERS!!! Expect a streak of Super Bowl wins now. Count on it. Boom.
What is WRONG with you?
He’s a Ravens fan.
You’re dumb, you’re a joke, you aren’t a fan. Stop posting as soon as possible.
Josh, here’s my “sorry” – sorry man, you embarrassed yourself as a Niner fan. This game wasnt over when you kept saying it was over, it was only “over” either when we missed on 4th down with less than 2 mins to go or we didnt stop the Ravens with enough time on the clock. We make one play late in the game and the Niners win this.
Bullsh*t Josh.
You aren’t a 49ers fan. You’re just a troll. You’ve been rooting against the 49ers since the playoffs began.
Go back to the Seahawks board where you belong.
We can blame the missed calls by the refs all we want, but the reality is that the Niners put themselves in a big hole with mistakes, bad play-calling, missed assignments, and terrible game management. I also strongly believe that if the team had the same QB for the whole season, whether it be Smith or Kaepernick, then the Niners would be hoisting the Lombardi right now instead of the Ravens.
They wouldn’t even be in the Super Bowl right now with Smith, give it a rest.
You absolutely missed the point BigP. What I am saying is that the team needed just one starter only at the QB position for the whole season. I don’t care if Kaep was the starter and Smith replaced him despite Kaep having a great record. I would still have the same criticism that, not the decison, but the timing of the decision was wrong. This decision needed to be made at the beginning of the season and kept throughout the whole season. If Kaep had started the whole season and had faced the Giants and Vikings defenses he might have been able to to have managed the game better and challenge the Ravens D more early on. Kaep’s inexperience in these situations showed tonight and that alone is on Jim Harbaugh.
MidWest…are you on the pipe? ;-)
Mid, it’s a combo of inexperience and coaching.
I agree Hof, but it is Harbaugh’s job to make sure our QB has enough starts under his belt so that he is prepared for any type of defense and situation. I strongly believe Kaep would be the MVP right now if he had started on Opening Day and on this season.
Mid, we’ll never know. I understand what you are saying but it didn’t go down that way. The D didn’t play well in the 1st half and that was also a key reason for the loss.
Which is why I place the main part of the blame on Harbaugh It isn’t all on him, but he needs to coach better and give his QB enough starts so that he is well prepared for a game of this magnitude.
MidWest, we’ll never know and I didn’t like the move at the time. It is what it is. Bad karma or not.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Kaep made a hell of a lot of plays that I don’t think Alex Smith would’ve made. I am a fan of AS and supported him even with the switch but you’re deluding yourself if you think AS would’ve played better than Kaep in this game
yes, i dont think the refs calls were that bad. I suffered thru the 83 NFC Championship game, where we were absolutely robbed by the refs of a miracle comeback. this was nothing remotely close to that. WE GAVE UP 28 POINTS IN THE FIRST 31 MINUTES! my god, if our D had stopped just one of those scores, we’re watching a parade on Market Street…
fesnyc
But ’83 has nothing to do with ’13. The noncall changed the game, had a direct effect on the outcome, more than any other single play. And it was a terribly obvious failure. And there were several key penalties called against the Niners that were nowhere near as obvious.
The game was lost when Vernon’s first catch was called back for illegal formation.
The Team was not ready to play. Had they made that call they would have been on the board first.
Now they look like a one half team.
Too bad, too sad.
Asayonara, honestly, i am not that fried about the contact on Crabs in the endzone. I dont think Crabs was materially impeded when you take the quality of the throw into account (speed, direction, arc). One man’s opinion, you’re free to disagree of course.
i would rather have seen the Niners try at least one more run play there – they did, in fact, try one on the play that got stopped from the first time out – but my view is that i cant really call plays: I cant complain about plays that dont work when so many of the plays called by the coaches do work. ie i can’t cherry pick and just hate the ones that dont work.
fes
Did you record the game? If so, watch it again. Or not. Materially impeded? That’s a lawyerly idea. He was held.
And here we go with the Smithers trying to claim the 49ers would have won with the bust.
They didn’t get their chance after the first playoff game when Kaep destroyed the Packers.
They didn’t get their chance when Kaep came back from 17 points down against the Falcons.
But now, finally, they get to say “Look! See! Karma!”
Please go to the Cleveland blogs next year.
Try not focusing on the Smith part (it’s hard but I know you can do it Msclemon) and you’ll see that I believe that Kaep would have won tonight if he was the starter from the get-go. He needed the additional experience starting in all types of situations and didn’t get it. That is on Harbaugh and Harbaugh alone.
Kaep starting at the start of the season is nitpicking fantasy. The smithers would have cried either way, sucks but true. Too many other things happened in the game that caused the loss. Nobody on the postgame radio or tv shows are saying what you are saying. Stop reaching.
But Kaep at times looked confused at times during the first half. A full season of experience under his belt could have been the difference maker.
ok Karma and metaphysical types, if its Karma, how do you explain Ray Lewis winning a ring?
last i checked, SBs are won with hits, catches, and runs. and no question we had the right guys out there on the field
FES, “karma or not” is how some deal with it. It is what it is and not worth getting sour about it.
Only a jack@ass who is not a real 49er fan would call it karma. We lost for alot of reasons out there today. Horrible first half by the defense, turnovers, penalties, timeouts wasted, poor redzone plays, poor ref calls, etc…
Sucks all around.
Hof, i hear you, coping strategies are important! but my point was, check the logic of your strategy before you rely on it. anyway, as you note, not even clear what some of these posts were meant to say, so I apologize for any misinterpretations. onward and upward. unfortunately for us that means the draft in April. just kills me that Justin S. wasnt healthy, and we didnt have KW, KH, and MM. but such is life.
FES, so true. If we had KH, there is no fumble. If MM plays, there is more of a WR threat. All of the 9ers injuries were bad timing for yet a second year.
FES, I agree they lost in the 1st half.
You guys need to read what I posted better. Nowhere am I favoring one QB over the other. We needed only one starting QB from day one of the season in order for him to experience different defenses and different situations so that he could be more prepared for this game.
Mid, you’re dealing with a bunch of upset fans. They didn’t read my post correctly either. I never intimated it was karma, but just poor play mainly in the 1st half.
MWN
But he played well enough to win the game. Either Roman doesn’t take a stupid pill OR the refs decide not to look the other way on an obvious penalty and we’re probably not having this discussion.
Sure, I agree with your position on starting Kaepernick from game 1, but your assertion that either QB would have won this game, implying Smith would have, is very clearly a deluded statement. Kaepernick is now a top-5 QB in the NFL, while Smith is average.
Until Kaep starts a full season, I can’t rank him against other starting QBs in the NFL.
…rank him fairly…
MWN
Fairly? Okay. Open your eyes. The only better QBs according to my eyes are …
In other words, I am not going to compare a 10 game starter to someone who started the entire season. The numbers would almost always be in favor of the 10 game starter. I will only rank one against the other when they start the whole season or at the beginning of the season, not in the middle of one.
Midwest
I follow your logic but I also subscribe to Hanzo’s theory of “eye test.” It tells me that #7 is pretty good, and so is the other guy who played tonight. Both are top-10, but Kaepernick’s upside is astronomical.
Unlike you MidWestNiner most people do not need to wait till next season to put Kap up there, just like we didn’t need to wait till the playoffs to know Kap was a baller and Harbs was right. He put on a post-season show never seen before all the to the Super Bowl. He’s the NFL’s ultimate weapon that is only going to get better with Harbaugh’s tutelage.
Nowhere am I saying that Kaep isn’t good, which is true because he is better than Rodgers IMO and that surpasses good. I just won’t rank him until he has a full season under his belt. Why rank him now when there is a good chance that he may not one of the top five but the top QB in the league next season?
Are you getting a job as Ray Ray’s personal assistant?
Can you be any more predictably dull McKevitt?
Could you be any more of an acolyte of the double-murderer Ray Lewis than you are? No, you could not.
Show me where I have been. Oh that’s right, you can’t. Next!
Denise York jinxed this team when she started yapping like an idiot that the ‘dynasty will prevail.’ Just sign the checks and STFU.
LOL. while I’d prefer to only blame people who were coaches and players in this game, i kinda had the same feeling when she said that…
fesync,
I’m kidding of course, but I still cringed when she said it. She had no business saying that.
You notice Jed corrected her quickly and said “well we still have to win one first”.
Yes I did. You could see him cringing too.
Now that I can calm down a little thought that pass to Crabtree was a catch now your looking at 4th and 3. Dont know why we didn’t try to run it on on 4 downs.
I agree, you have 4 downs inside the 10 and have been killing them with the run. If you run it all 4 times were not having the debate about the non call…
hahahaha, niners homers.
Smitty? The noncall was egregious, not even close.
And get rid of that loser, the ass spelled Moss.
gotta admit i was a bit disappointed with some of his efforts. but he has/had his positives, just wasnt enough. wish we had Manningham and KW active for this game, i think it would have made a nice difference
He plays when he wants to play. Apparently the 1st half of a superbowl is not one of those times. The greatest WR of all time would have at least reached up for that pass instead of watching it sail in to Reed’s arms
pain………….sickness. I can’t believe it. I was worried about the refs. GRO took a dumb in the red zone. no running plays at the end there? really..
whos got it better than us???? the baltimore ravens! 49ers quest for six points.
PEDs and affirmative action referees for the win.
First boxing….then the NBA….wake up People…The “las vegas” ravens just won the superbowl…
That was probably the worst refereed game I have ever seen. I may never watch another one. The fix was clearly in.
The NFL should be ashamed. The 49ers noted that they had already had problems with the head referee. Now, they will lose business because the blatant bias is now in the open. I used to think that the only truly systemic bad refereeing was in the NBA. Now, the NFL has joined those ranks.
So, I will end my only blog in an unfortunate way. I probably will never watch another NFL game. I hate watching a “fixed” competition.
Highlander22
My buddy from Wisconsin said the same thing after the Packers / Seahawks game and he refused to engage in the Sunday pastime ever since. Now I get it.
The FIX was in.
Proud of Kap. He really pulled it out of the fire And we almost won. I’m looking forward to what kind of QB he’ll be with a whole season under his belt.
Good luck to Alex on his next team. He’s been all class all through the play-offs and Superbowl week. A great inspiration actually in how to be a team player.
This is a young team… I think our future looks bright!
N, it doesn’t. Why? The east-coast bias was finally displayed,. nakedly, and it’s now the East Coast football league. West Coast teams are an afterthought. The NFL is an evil organization. That evil was on glittery display this evening.
I’m glad that we can’t blame it on Akers.
What a lousy first half.
Culliver was the goat of the week and the goat of the game. Any disagreement?
Clem, that deep pass to JJones was terrible. If he is our best CB as some believe, he needs work.
Gotta agree with you there.
I thought Whitner had a worse game, but I guess we’d be splitting hairs at that point. Still I’m way more livid at the refs than any individual player. Ugh.
I was and have never been sold on Culliver. I used to scratch my head every time someone says he’s a top notch corner. I just didn’t (and still don’t) see it.
His game plan seems to be to just run with a receiver downfield. Whenever a ball is up for grabs he just watches bigger receivers come down with them and he hardly ever defends the pass.
Unfortunately for him he couldn’t even run with the receivers downfield this game, let alone challenge catches.
He is a top notch corner. He was top 10 in the NFL for yards allowed per snap in coverage. A bad game in the Super Bowl doesn’t mean hes a bad player.
I think he’s average, perhaps slightly better than average.
TOP NOTCH corners don’t look anything like Culliver.
“TOP NOTCH corners don’t look anything like Culliver.”
What does that even mean? Hes still young only in his second year, and he was our second best corner by any measure all year long and was downright dominant for the first half of the season. He tailed off at the end but even our best corner in Tarell Brown got picked on at times this year. PFF has some great stats on Culliver like: “Chris Culliver. He gave up a first down or touchdown on only 3.45% of his snaps in coverage, a staggeringly low amount when you consider that the next lowest score is that of Leon Hall, with 3.75%.”
Culliver gave up only 17 1st downs or touchdowns all year.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/01/28/signature-stats-first-downs-allowed-cornerbacks/
Sherman gave up 29 1st downs or touchdowns. 5% of his snaps.
You’re completely off-base if you pull one stat and declare Culliver in the same class as Sherman. I’m not even going to entertain such a ridiculous notion. Good night.
Did I say Culliver was in the same class as Sherman? At least I brought stats, two actually, to show Culliver was a top notch corner this year instead of saying ridiculous things like he doesn’t “look like” a top notch corner. Some fans are so daft.
You declared him a top notch corner. Sherman is actually recognized as a top notch corner (All-Pro). Do the math. SMH..
Top notch as in top 10, not best corner in the league like Sherman arguably is. But I guess what I say doesn’t matter since apparently you seem intent on putting words in my mouth rather than defending any of your ludicrous statements.
Culliver had a bad week and a horrible game. There is still hope for him though. For most of the season he was very good.
But damn. What a time to put up the worst performance of his career. The 49ers would have been better off if he had just fallen down at the LOS on most of his plays tonight.
Dude ran his mouth during the week and got burned repeatedly during this game. Not once, not twice, several times, for big plays at critical times. He just folded like a 5 dollar tent in a hurricane.
Way to run his mouth. What a moron. I guess he really let his play do the talking for him tonight. Top notch!
Rogers didn’t look real slick either. T. Brown though made a couplE good plays,I thought.
Our secondary got exploited in the plsyoffs this year. Clearly, it needs to be upgraded. There is no way our secondary can continue to allow QBs to school us every year in the playoffs like the teams did this year.
I know this sucks but we have a young superstar on the rise. He stepped up and played lights out there in bringing the team back. I don’t think defenses are used to seeing a QB laser a 30+ yard throw in seams downfield. He’s shown an innate ability to remain calm and bring the team back in big games with BS quick strike capabilities. CK looked flat out amazing there. Even some of the drops were just superb thrown in crunch time.
We have a lot to look forward to next year and beyond. Thanks for another great season. Go RED! Can’t wait to see CK terrorize defenses for years to come.
I’m not sure where that ‘BS’ came from in there. Damn autocorrect..
It came from your old arguments with the psycho
We have alot of positive thinghs to look forward too.
This hurts, but the Niners are a very good team. We should be in the hunt for the next few years.
the failure to score from the 5 will be hard to get over.
#FailedSeason
Well thanks for the awesome ride this year niners/niner faithful. It was an overall great season faught till the last whistle! We are set up for the long haul now. Thanks for the great post enjoyed reading them all season. Hope Daren jumps of the GG bridge tonight for jinxing us! On the bright side Alex is officially a goner! Bout damn time. See y’all next year!
Hey you guys, enjoy next season. I will be fishing on Sundays. No DVR of games.
I’m deeply hurt by this loss, so much so my wife is staying away from me, but my logic is slowly returning and I can’t wait to see what Kaep looks like with a full off-season and the upgrades we’re gonna make to our D
Yeah, don’t let it get to you too much. The Ravens exposed some problems we need to fix. Besides, we made a good game of it.we had a chance. For a while there it was looking like a blowout.
YUCK… Harbaugh should say what he really thinks about the refs…. damn the fine. We deserved to lose with the first half we played, but to come back like we did and have the refs take it from us… Eric Davis apparently said there was no way the refs were going to throw the flag… what if Smith tackled Crabtree? God, this is just like the NBA… soon it will be like pro wrestling. Time to find something else to do on fall Sundays.
niners got lucky to even come back d/t the blackout. crabs was also pushing and that was not a catchable ball. ravens deserved it. stop whinning about it. suck it up princess.
We were robbed. The non call on fourth Down was inexcusable. I have NEVER Been this bummed out about a loss, including the 91 NFC championship game against ny because this time the outcome was decided by a downright horrible super bowl game changing non call by the refs.
The great Colin Kapernick somehow brought this weary team back from a blowout. That’s the good news.
I truly believe that Kap is not only the best QB in football but the best player in all of the NFL. Period.
Did anyone see the look in Ck’s eyes and face at the end of the game.
Kap will get his revenge. And so shall we.
I think Aaron Rodgers is the best but Kap is quickly rising. Top ten rank for Kap next year as far as Qb’s go.
Such a dumb comment nation. Domingo has it right.
Hey i love Kap but i only give A-Rod the edge because of experience and having a ring. You could argue Kap and i wouldn’t really put up a fight about it. I’ve backed Kap since preseason.
Let’s be clear, the only reason you even chimed in on this is because he said that your sweety cakes is the best player in the NFL.
The greatest that Colin posses is self evident. We have a truly great one. He brought a tired weary and unprepared team back from the brink and was stopped by a flagrant non call.
We do got a great one going foward domingo. lmao @ coffee, still mad about the old smith stuff, let it go dude.
Yes, I wouldn’t trade kap for anybody in the nfl. There is no other qb that has his skill set. Domingo is 100 per cent right. Kap is the only reason we made it to the sb, and the only on that could of brought us back. The pi call against culliver wasn’t nearly as flagrant as the non call on crabtree
Niners clearly were the better team and Kap is amazing.
Unfortunately the referees control your fate. Just like the judges do on American Idol. 9/10 calls went against us, same as NFC Championship last year. Niners are the best team in NFL regardless of the score tonight.
Culliver and Rogers suck though!
Let’s shift the focus away from such a disheartening loss tonight.
Someone said Beyonce looked hot tonight. What??
She needs to stop doing leg presses. Tree trunks for legs! They could run her between the tackles.
Here’s my question; What the hell happened to our pass rush, or maybe yet, have defenses figured out how to neutralize Smith and Brooks?
Yes some of it has to do with Justin getting hurt but our ability to get to the QB pretty much dissolved the past 4 games or more. This has more to do with why our coverage has looked so bad then it does with the quality of the backs. However with that said I don’t see the 49ers going out of their way to give Goldson the kind of contract he wants. He’s great in run support but clearly a liability in deep coverage.
Get out your golf clubs, Mr. Everything. The season is finally over.
Ravens 34 and Niners 31.
How much $$$ did you lose on that “can’t miss Harbaw experiment (CK)” ?
Joe Flaco: 11 touchdowns and zero (0) interceptions – MVP
What? You’re a total f*cking jaded twerp. Kaep played like a champ. Most of the team played great. The OC and the refs ruined this game. F*ck you ASfP!
The officiating had nothing to do with the outcome of this game.
The posters on this board made great points re:
**We had two weeks to prepare and we line up in the wrong formation on the first play?
**We let Flacco roll out in the first half and then let him LOB up passes for completions that just have been INT’s.
**First and goal to end the game we didn’t run the read option. I think Kaep kept trying to force it ti Crabtree the last three plays because he’s been his go-to guy the last 10 games.
**Who was the idiot announcer calling for Alex Smith to come in after the power outage because he can run the plays faster than Kaep?
**The future is bright for this team.
If this was the wild wild west I would hunt you down.
The officiating clearly had a lot to do with the outcome of the game. Ravens were allowed to mug our receivers on game changing plays, we weren’t allowed to tap theirs. The DPI call on Culliver wasn’t nearly as bad as the missed DPI cal on Smith against Crabtree. Yes there are other reasons we lost the game but the officiating was a factor.
For some odd reason, I am just not that upset after this loss, we can vent that the Refs sucked, Ed Reed looked offside, Crabs was held, but we got a break with the Akers play and the player going into him. We wasted too much time in the third quarter, hated that spread out option for the two point conversion, along with third and fouth down play, our secondary looked about comical, I really don’t like Culliver, he holds on every play, and Rogers is past his time.We came back, we got heart, and we will be the favorites next season. Give the Ravens their due, the only thing that botherd me is that Two time murderer got a second ring. Life goes on. I love this team and we will be back.
Agree 100%. Can’t blame the refs for letting the players play. We just didn’t have a decent play call in us inside the 10.
Exactly !!
The refs had everything to do with it. Kiss my ass!
Crab,
Giving up a 108 yard return was sinful.
So the refs lined up in an illegal formation to begin the game? The refs intercepted the ball and not Reed? The refs fumbled the ball, effectively killing a great Niners drive? The refs made Flacco to comfortable in the pockets? The refs missed interceptions on defense and catches on offense? The refs were the ones calling bad plays for our offense? Some fault does go to the refs, but the majority of it goes to the Niners (mainly Harbaugh) for digging a huge hole that they couldn’t fight their way out of Crab.
The refs didn’t call much the whole game. The Ravens made more plays and fewer, less costly mistakes.
The game was there for the taking, despite all of the Niners mishaps. Culliver did not look good. Kaep was rattled initially but came back and for the most part played like the baller that he is, and I’m excited for him as the QB for the Niners in 2013.
He did not play like this was his 10th start. He his that physically gifted.
It’s not his fault that the play-calls at the goal line were horrible. Why go empty backfield on the 2 pt conversation? Now they are just going to blitz and force Kaep to make a read and throw.
He didn’t. I love the guy now and am a huge fan. But this year was all about SB win or bust. He had a chance with the ball in his hand to win it. He would have been a legend, but he didn’t get it done.
To next year….
Oh and giving up a 108 yard touchdown is inexcusable.
Or jump ball passes for completions!
Those jump ball passes that Flaco launched & completed were extremely frustrating.
Horrible, throwing balls 2oo feet in the air and they are catching them like a centerfielder.
Agree with you both.
Yes and no… While I agree that the team lost all on their own, the refs WERE atrocious… The running into the kicker was an obvious roughing. Intentional or not if you make contact with the kicker while his leg is extended it’s a personal foul, no questions asked. Boger and the gang looked confused all night…
@Crabs15…
The refs had absolutely nothing to do with the 49er’s digging themselves a 28 – 6 hole, and trying to pull themselves out…get pissed at the factual comment, but ‘facts is facts’….Great Teams don’t let that happen….unfortunately, Very Good Teams do…
The ‘niners did plenty tonight to lose this game, falling behind so early, not running Gore at the end, etc., etc., but I’m still sick over the officiating… How the hell do they miss TWO GUYS raping Bruce Miller mere yards from Jones during his “return?” Was anybody watching? There’s “letting the guys play,” but this reeks… Feels like “The League” wanted to send Brutha Ray out a winner.
All can say nfl is looking more and more like the wwf they pick who wins period …….I have see all I need with my own two eyes this crap is rigged fool me once sham on you fool me twice shame on me, good luck nfl you will never see another dime from me.
That was heartbreaking. But positive point I can look at was how Kaep looked poised and almost brought us back. He will only get better. I know our team will be even more hungry next year!!
We dug a huge hole. We couldn’t score a TD from the 5. But we only lost by 3. I am upset, but we were lucky to get back in it.
Yes, there were some questionable calls and non-calls, but the 49ers had plenty of issues that contributed to this loss. And the offense, the defnse, the special teams, and the coaching staff all share responsibility for these issues. I think what bothers me is that if just one of the four would have performed to their capabilities for the entire game, the 49ers would have won.
Also, congratulations to the Ravens. They had a good game plan and they executed it more consistently than the 49ers executed their game plan.
Sounds like you think the Niners players are better than the Ravens players, with the inverse being true as to the coaches. True?
I do think the 49ers are the more talented team, but overall the Ravens had a better plan and played better. So yes, tonight their coaching staff was better than the 49ers’ coaching staff.
I like the fact that this team is fairly young and should be among the best for years to come. What I don’t like is the division the Niners play in. The Seahawks are a very dangerous team and will only become more so with Wilson at QB. Both the Cardinals and Rams need to make a few tweaks in order to become threats again. The Niners will probably still be the best, but it won’t be as easy as the past two seasons.
The Ravens will not be back next season. This was their swan song game.
Their defense will go through a radical change with the loss of Lewis and Reed and Ngata getting older and slowing down.
We will be back to the SB and win it next year. CK will be better, the defense will make a couple of tweeks at DB. Culliver played good throughout the season but seemed to give up big plays in the playoffs.
I was surprised that our pass rush was inept throughout the playoffs as well.
Harbaugh/Baalke will make the right moves to correct this going forward.
All good.
“I was surprised that our pass rush was inept throughout the playoffs as well.”
Nah AES. With J Smith not being at full strength it took away the twist that he and A Smith run so well.
Yea that defensive duo was never the same after the Justin injury. I noticed Justin was out alot late in the game.
The question is will J Smith be at full strength next season. Add that to the fact that he is getting up there age wise and the future for him appears a little cloudy.
Play calling/decision making did us in at the end.
What we needed in the last series was a slant like the one Delanie Walker caught in Detroit last season. Put it in the belly of the receiver….
One thing I noticed is that our safties disappeared during this game. That played a part in the poor secondary play.
Here’s the good news 49er fans.
ITS NEXT YEAR!
The 2013 season is here.
Niners lose the SB. sadly, there’s a first time for everything. They played like Champs in the second half, but made to many mistakes. Thank you for the exciting and dramatic year. Keep your heads up, rest up, stay healthy & comeback stronger next year! Congrats to Baltimore. America got a great game today.
Yea falling to 5-1 in the big game sucks, now only the Chicago Bulls can claim to be the only team in all of pro sports to have a unblemished championship record at 6-0.
Colin had a 300 yard game!
We lost this game on team’s poor first half performance. 20% on third down conversions. Had to settle for two field goals instead of getting TD in the red zone.
Getting the ball, after Tarrell Brown’s fumble recovery, at the Ravens 20 yard line and settling for a FG was the difference in the game.
108 yard return hurt. Not being able to cover Boldin’s incredible catches hurt. Letting a guy get behind you, falling down on his butt, and making a catch hurt. Seeing guy get up and running another 10 yards for a TD was emasculation.
Feel sorry for Frank Gore as he played well after a great, healthy season, and deserved the ring.
I feel you completely, OM. Bottom line is, we made too many mistakes. Whitner and Culliver got exposed. I know Culliver is young, but he made too many mistakes, and mentally, he’s a liability. How do you talk smack to someone who just got a thirty-yard catch on you (to Boldin in the first half)? Whitner’s a great hitter and a good character guy, but he stinks in coverage. His coverage on Pitta on the Ravens’ second touchdown was an absolute joke.
At the end of the day, I still think the Niners are the better team; however, the better team tonight won the game. At least we can take solace in the fact that we found our QB of the future.
Actually it wasn’t the difference in the game. Do the math.
34-31=3
7-3=4
4>3
Difference in the game.
Or…
31+4=35
35>34
Difference in the game. Math-wise at least. Which one of us drank too much during the game?
OpenMinded
You forgot one step…
31-2=29
7-3=4
29+4=33
34>31
I drank Gatorade. It’s basically genius-juice for mathematics.
Sucks to lose the SB and then the math quiz….
OpenMinded
The safety. You forgot the safety!
34>33
Yes, I conceded I failed the math quiz.
A night’s sleep did nothing for me to feel better about the game. I hope it doesn’t take another 18 years for the Niners to get back to the SB. I don’t think I’ll be on Earth in 2031.
No one would have believed in 1995, with Steve Young as our QB, that it would be 2013 before we were to return to the SB…
Another killer mistake that get’s overlooked a bit…Brooks jumping offsides on Ravens first drive on 3rd & 9. Instead of getting off field giving up only 3, next play is a TD.
In the end it was too many 49ers mistakes, and the team that played better tonight won.
Ed Reed didn’t get called for offsides… hmmmm.
The Niners lined up in an illegal formation on the first offensive play. Hmmm….
Letterman should have Ray Lewis read tomorrow night’s Top 10 List off stone tablets….
Romo ripped the hell outta Randy Moss on the post game show. Damn, lol.
He deserves it GOAT my ass
A guy by the name of Jerry Rice never had alligator arms for a single Nano-second of his career. Moss is not close to Jerry
Aldon Smith final 6 games = no sacks
We have some interesting problems to deal with this offseason. Our C Goodwin could call it quits and I really don’t believe Kilgore can take his place. The Cowboy’s future is a little murky what with his injury and age. Gore could call it quits or even be released what with the depth at RB and his age playing a factor. Soap and RJF could both be gone in FA and I don’t believe Ian Williams is versatile enough to take either one’s place. Walker and Goldson will both probably seek a huge pay increase. Our secondary desperately needs to be addressed, especially whether we have a true #1 CB on the team and if Rogers can live up to his contract. And finally the WR corps needs addressed as well what with Moss most likely not coming back next season, AJ Jenkins playing horribly, and the injuries that mounted at the position. I am not including whether Smith is traded or released because I believe that will be the easiest problem to solve.
Just what I was thinking, Midwest. Those on here who think it’s no big deal, and we’ll be back next year ought to give a listen to guys like Marino who thought the same thing…
Still sitting here grinding my teeth over not running Frank… wtf?
That has been a problem all season with Roman. He calls run plays and passing plays at the wrong time.
Seriously 3 tries for 5 yds, they couldve got that if they ran all 3 times!
Yup. We can rightfully complain about the refs all we want, but if we’d run three times at the end of the game, I think we can dismiss all those other concerns, because the winners don’t worry about bad calls!
I am a 49ers fan, get over it haters. Just because I was right you’re all upset… Kaepernick was not experienced enough to stay cool. The only reason the 49ers came back is because they had a 30 minute gift which cooled off the Ravens momentum. It would have been nice not to burn a timeout because of an inexperienced QB taking too long. And it’s ridiculous that it happened again… Jim Harbaugh took a risk and it didn’t work. Kaepernick obviously had his chance and failed. To people saying Smith wouldn’t have got us to the SB… stop being silly, it’s pointless to talk about.
I didn’t like the switch but grew to love Kaep and his potential and his upside. But it’s a game of inches for reason and it’s not his fault that he’s only had 10 starts, yet he is that talented that he almost pulled it off. But in the SB, you can’t take uneccessary time-outs and you can’t leave plays in the field as a QB.
He made great throws and amazing plays, but will be remembered, on this day, for the ones he didn’t make.
Coaches played a part in that my friend. Losing the Super Bowl sucks more than anything but still was an amazing season. Kap was unreal in the postseason. We lost Manningham, K.Williams, K.Hunter for the year, cut Jacobs & had Justin Smith not fully healthy and we still got to the Super Bowl.
I don’t disagree with the bad coaching decisions and although technically those aren’t on him, bottom line is players have to make plays on the biggest stage and he didn’t do it.
He didn’t do it? WTF, do what..make plays? Kap made alot of plays. There are many reasons we lost this game in the end and play calling played a big part make no mistake about that. Jacoby Jones murdered us tonight with a big play TD catch and a huge special teams TD as well.
Hey I’m not hating on Kap. He’s going to be great. He made a lot of plays but not the ones that mattered. He called in audible on that pass to Crabs. Yeah he got held but they’re not going to give you that call.
I’m just saying it like it is……
Where was the defense when it mattered?
Alex Fan77,
Wont the whole team be remembered by the plays that they didnt make? Kap made a ton of plays. Any real Ni er fan would point to our decense and the kickoff return as some critical mistakes in this game. All the backhanded compliments to Kap. They font fly with me. ALEX is gone. Get over it.
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Alex Smith also have trouble getting plays in on time and burning TO’s? I think this is a coaching issue not a QB issue
Refs were blind – how could they miss the two Ravens holding the Niner on the 2nd half opening return? Watch it again – that’s why the hole was in the middle.
And of course, there was the hold/pass int on the 4th & goal. It’s tough winning a game when 2/3′s of the guys on the field are making bad plays.
Hey 49er faithful, does anyone think we should make a play for D.Revis from the Jets, or should we just rely on the NFL draft this year for any secondary additions?
The draft this year is said to have a good depth in the CB pool so I’d say that route would be best. In order to get Revis, we would probably have to trade Smith, Hunter, and either our 1st round pick or a few of our other picks to Jets. Revis is that valuable of a player to that organization. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they demanded we take Tebow as well for the trade to go through.
Yea it would take quite a haul to maybe get him. Revis would be costly for sure. He wants a big raise i believe, so we would have to consider the cap ramifications as well. I guess its like the Aerosmith classic tune says…”Dream On”.
Midwest,
Tebow???? Why would they insist we take Tebow. I dont think Tebow is even under contract. If he is, the Jets could just cut him if they dont want him. Hes not making any real money. Post makes no sense.
The 49ers had 4 days to prepare for the Ravens and barely lost with Alex Smith starting… they had 2 weeks and looked like a JV team against a Varsity team with Kaepernick. It took a bizzare delay to stop the Ravens momentum. Kaepernick’s delay of game burned a timeout needlessly. 49ers needed that. Also, the audible on the last play sucked. Jim Harbaugh made a HUGE mistake starting a young, inconsistent QB. Thanks Jim for that.
Kap didnt lose this game for us…..was a team loss.
It has more to deal with Kaep being an inexperienced QB more than anything. Not giving him a full season so that he was better prepared to manage the game and not leave some plays on the field does rest on Harbaughs’ shoulders. You are right in that regard.
Our defense was better last year dumba** Alex got sacked 9 times in that game and we lost 16 to 6. Our offense didn’t fail today it was our defense. If our defense could’ve held them to no points more than once today we would’ve won. Kaepernick 300 yards passing and 62 yards rushing yeah he sucks.
There’s no doubt that Kaep is a very dynamic and exciting young player. He’s got huge upside. He definitely did things during the play-off run that drops your jaw. At the same time, you can make the argument that Alex could have also won those games. He beat the Packers once already.
The Pistol Offense is definitely one that can add wrinkles to the offense and when Colin got going, he was moving the ball well.
But it’s hard not to see how some of the rookie mistakes showed up in the big game. They were small but it doesn’t take much.
Next year will be interesting. Colin will definitely be hungrier but it’s hard to repeat. NFC West is going to be tougher.
77
You’re such a d*mb POS Smith wouldn’t have won a great many of the games that Kaep started what a joke you are for saying so go h*mp your mom
Fan,
Please make an argument for alex Sith bringing us from 17 down against Atlanta? What about bringing us back yesterday? Im so thankful we wont be having this conversation in 2 months
He will be gone.
Jordo, at the end of the game CK needs to make a play right there. Why should he get off the hook?
The great QB make the plays when they HAVE to make the plays. Kap throwing to Crab 3 times in a row, same play, same corner, that’s just iving away the game!
Should have somehow gotten Brandon Belt to play QB and then we would have been 16-0. Hey guys on this site, I’m bitter now, but I realize it, so am not spewing it, capisce?
Josh is the real BS. You are still clueless. Absolutely clueless.
Fire Greg Roman now!!!
You’re on the 4/5 with the best running QB in the league and you throw the ball?? WTF.
QB run left, QB run right, QB run left again until it works.
Horrible play calling. the game was in reach and the OC f%*ed up.
Roman has got to go now!!!
I’m not kidding. That SOB has no idea how to win a SB.
And Randy Moss is a piece of Sh&%.
We need to get some real receivers. Not some washed up POS that thinks he is the GOAT.
Randay FO!!!
Gonna be a couple years before we sniff the SB again. I feel a SB loser hangover next year. Money’s on the Seahawks out of the West.
U rite crab need replacement for culliver n Rodgers some good safeties and this team is way better just hope we got the salary available loo yea new kicker other than that we alright we in for a ride all oVer and def thin kap will take us there again laser beam through the season.
Any talk of AS possibly winning this game had he played can only be described as delusional and sour grapes.
The AS ship sailed a long time ago, and bring him into the SB equation is absolutely ridiculous.
We lost this game because we put ourselves in the hole in the first half.
We were able to regroup and make a great comecack against the Falcons, but you continue to fall behind in the big games and think you can go to well over and over again.
I don’t like the way Culliver has played throughout the playoffs. He has been a weak link over the last few us and that needs to be addressed this off season.
C.Rogers is a bubble player. He did come anywhere close to his play of last year. He may lose his job during TC or sometime during next season if we can find a suitable replacement.
Aldon Smith was a big disappointment for me in the playoffs. Perhaps his shoulder bothered him more than he let it be known, but his play was less then stellar.
The play calling on the last series was too risky. Throwing passes when the defense was reeling from the run was questionable. Our running game was our bread and better throughout the season, to go away from it on the most important series of the last 18 years baffles me.
Randy Moss continues to show the football world why he will never be considered the best receiver ever. He must/will go!
Still messed up the morning after. Hopefully i’ll have a better perspective after a cup of coffee (lol).
AES, I don’t see any talk of AS. It is unfortunate for a team that collects over 400 yds offensively and they lose. Breakdowns on offense (INT and fumble), special teams (KO return for td), and defense (little pressure of JF and the DBs coverage issues). Very disappointing and not a slam dunk to get back any time soon.
*on JF*
Amazing how we have 2 pro bowl safeties that truly cant cover. They are hard hitters and great in run support but they simply can’t support in the passing game. I love Goldson. However, he just cant cover deep. We didn’t give up more than 1 pass play over 40 yards in the regular season. However, there were several times where we got beat deep in coverage and the qb either overthrew the receiver or the receiver
didn’t make the play.
On another note. We missed the starting outside linebacker (98) a bit more than we thought. Right now, Aldon Smith is either hurt or he is a one trick pony that needs lot of work. He has to put on some bulk. He cant get to the QB without assistance from Justin Smith.
Did anyone see Moss alligator arm that pick from Kap. Moss was scared to get hit right there. That play alone sealed moss’ s fate for me next season.
I don’t understand all the hate on Aldon. Yeah, he’s been held sackless, but he’s still been very productive this post season. In the SB alone he was in on one of the sacks, and got pressure on Flacco a good chunk of the time. Flacco got away, and he should have been sacked, I get that but it’s not like he was stone walled all night.
Luke,
Watch aldon on the edge against the run. Watch his attempts to set the edge. He was poor. He missed at least 4 tackles.
I agree with you there, Jordan. He is fair at best against the run. The one where he had Pierce dead to rights, where he should of just held his ground and waited for the cavalry. Instead he attacked and got beat for a large gain.
the replay of their first score is particularly galling. Boldin runs by our safety and LB. he’s essentially got 2 guys on him and we dont stop him. oh well. the draft cant come soon enough
oh, and Giants spring training…
Second year coach and a first year starting QB in the Super Bowl, we have plenty to look forward to.
It didn’t happen yesterday when they have the trophy right in front of them, and it’s hard as hell to make it back there again, but if any team can do it, it’s this team.
Rather not have a bunch of bandwagon fans anyway.
Way to go Ravens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did Cullies “interesting” week effect his play last night? He was torched again and again. Um… touch the receiver down, please?
Maybe he was afraid of touching the receiver cuz he thought it would turn him into a homosexual
Niners offseason should go a little something like this. Release Akers and WHITNER. And trade for Revis. Only corner who played like crap was te guy in the media spreading his hate. Interesting. This is such a bad feeling to have as a fan. Ugh.
Niners can’t afford Revis. Especially considering no one knows how he is going to be.
Regarding GR’s playcalling, CK has two plays on every down to use. It is up to him to call one or the other depending on coverage. We also don’t know how much responsibility they gave CK to audible, since this is only his 11th game. I wouldn’t put all of the issues in that last series only on GR/JH or the missed holding call.
*two plays on every down – a run and a pass -*
There should have been no passing option at the end. You develop this massive O line, your stud RB is averaging 5.8, running between the tackles has not been working all night, so you run your change of pace back between the tackles and then pass 3 times.
Harbaugh says he loves the type of football played by Shembeckler (sp?) and Hayes. They certainly were rolling in their graves at the end of the game.
We need a pass rush and an offensive coordinator.
Remember, “kill, kill, kill” which means to change the play? There is always two plays called so the QB can change it at the LOS. Yes it may be GR calling both plays but CK can make an adjustment as well.
Seeing Kap, Crab and Gore huddle together was giving it away for me.
Hofer with the success they’d had running previously there was no reason for there not to be a run called there. That was a time to NOT call two plays in the huddle or if you do make both of them runs.
Bottom line, there should have been an attempt to run the ball at the end of the game and it was Romans or Harbaugh’s job to make sure that happened. It’s pretty easy to tell Colin to not “kill” the first play and stick with the run instead over the head set.
CFC, that’s my point. There was a run and a pass play called. CK determines by reading the defense which to use. We don’t really know the intricacies of the details if GR/JH told CK to only pass on the 3 plays after the LMJ run or if he still had the option to change the play at the LOS which was protocol all season long.
but my point is that at that point they shouldn’t have had the two options. They should have focused on at least two of the plays to punch it in with Gore or Kaep and on those calls there shouldn’t have been a pass option.
Where I’ll put Kaep under the microscope is the decision to go with a Fade route on the last play. No attempt to let the play develop more and see if there was a better option or to see if he could scramble in. He hiked the ball and immediately went to the fade.
That fade pass would have been fine if it was their first pass attempt. It’s a low percentage pass that had no business being thrown as our last play of the game.
Hofer and Coffee,
How about making sure Kaepernick just snaps the ball on time? The play in which they had to burn a timeout was a called run, and it would have been 6.
The players decided the outcome, not the playcalling. They are the ones who fumbled, threw an interception, didn’t tag the man down after getting burned, allowed a kickoff return for a TD, didn’t snap the ball on time.
Yes that is extremely frustrating JH but I’m pretty confident that that is the kind of thing that will become better next season when he’s had more time preparing as the starter. When he’s had some more film time he’ll recognize defensive sets faster and make his calls quicker. Seems like it takes him a couple moments to long to figure out what he’s looking at and that should get better with experience.

———————————————–
That’s not entirely true, play calling does effect the outcome of a game. I’m almost always the one waving the banner that the players need to execute the plan but the plan needs to make sense under the circumstances. The plan needs to give the players the right tools to work with.
Now I definitely believe we should have been given a PI call and I believe with a fresh set of downs we would have punched it in so ultimately i”m not blaming Roman for losing the game. My biggest gripe is the fade call for the last play and the lack of using Gore or Kaep to try and punch it in.
My reason as to why we lost the SuperBowl is that we gave Flacco to much time. If we’d had a better pass rush we would have seen a different outcome.
….oh and the free TD on the kick off certainly didn’t make any difference either I guess.
I agree with Jack. There’s always woulda, coulda, shoulda after a loss and this was no different. The Niners looked completely overwhelmed to start the game and didn’t pull things together until after the blackout in the 3rd quarter. You can’t play like that in the SB and expect to win. They were living dangerously going back to the NFCCG and it bit them on the a$$ this time.
Certainly a disappointing loss, so close but no cigar. A good season though and some team growth. The negativity on this site, while I knew to expect it, is over blown. These guys didn’t fail, they failed to win a close game against a good team. And they didn’t miss by that much. Maybe the sky is falling. Maybe not.
BT, good read. I hear what you are saying but it is difficult to get back even with talented players (see DMarino). Just very frustrating.
They DID fail in the 1st half, and that’s why we don’t have a trophy!
Hey Hofe, how’s it going bud.
With all due respect there has been some posting about AS on here.
MWNiner begin the topic by posting that we should have had a starting QB play throughout the season.
Well, since AS was the starter at the beginning of the season the impplication is obvious don’t you think?
In any case, the AS convo will soon go away.
But no Hofe, I did not bring AS up, I was merely replying.
I’m eagerly awaiting Grant’s grades on the game. It should make for interesting conversation.
Great season Hofe. We will be back next year!
AES, I read that from MidWest as well, but he qualified it by saying that it should have been CK from the start of the season so he was more experienced. Don’t read it as more than it is and no need to go down that road. It’s a very disappointing loss.
Midwest, Hofer,
Kap could never have started the season at QB. Especially after JH threw Smith a bone after trying to replace him with manning. How do you pay Smuth 8.5 million, then bench him to start the season. JH made that mistake because he shouldve made the decision to start kap at the start of the season. He was too busy being sensitive to Smiths feelings. At least he wont have that problem next season.
Jordo, I hear you but the writing was clearly on the wall with the number of plays CK was getting each and every week.
I really feel like Kap struggles with that label of being a running QB. The kid needs to know he has a weapon that 90% of NFL QB’s dont have. He has to use his legs at those times when receivers arent open. He seemed to be rwluctant to run last night. I thought he could’ve scored in that series early in the game whwn he threw high to crabtree. Gotta use your legs and pay no attention to the clown that label you a running qb. Just keep ballin Kap.
Jordo, good point. CK is a running QB in the best way. He can beat you as a dual threat with his arm and his legs. “Running QB” has received a bad connotation similar to “game manager” – they are both good skills to have especially when some QBs can do neither. Maybe instead of running QB, just call CK the multi threat QB.
Jordo
I was sure there would be a point last night where he would talked it upon himself to just get it done, done with his legs. And the last drive was the time for it, but it never came. When Gore broke that run and just kept going but not quite to the goal line, I had a sense of doom. Kaep’s Niners have been devastatingly effective at scoring from between the 15-30 yard lines this season, but not as much from inside the 10. It was a huge let down that the team didn’t go pistol 4 straight times from the 7 yard line. Terrible. The moment got too big. Kaep, Roman, & Harbaugh were overmatched by the moment.
Grant please just promise us that you will do your best to get Roman to answer why he didn’t call a single run play on that last series and not let him get away with this “we had other calls made” kind of BS.
Although it is only year 1, Grant may be right about Jenkins. 1st round pick that is completely healthy and does not make a play all season. Does not catch 1 pass. Never heard of that before.
Was he a JH or TB pick? Hmm.
TB. Kaep is the team’s only JH-exclusive pick. Gotta expect some changes this season. I think Parrish Cox will get more playing time and Rogers will be minimized. He got burned just as much as Cully last night. T Brown played like a stud.
Actually, 1st and goal on the 7 on that last series was a run play for two yards.
By LMJ, who had already fumbled in the game. Why not hand it to the work horse Gore or even better let Kaep try a naked boot.
I was just pointing out that your initial comment, which said “why he didn’t call a single run play on that last series” was wrong.
no that’s true, I didn’t phrase it very correctly. I felt the LMJ run was a feeble attempt given that Kaep and Gore were a much stronger option and then that we didn’t follow it in the series with another attempt. but to what I said you’re 100% right.
I agree! What a total bummer. We really could have had that game. But damn, what a fun season to watch.
Kaep a whole offseason as the QB. Manningham and Williams And hunter back. I’m confident.
I feel worse about knowing that Roman didn’t get hired away and is still our OC for next season then I do about losing the game.
I still expect a very defense heavy draft. Our DL will be the priority followed by finding a safety or two. Let run support Goldson go find a big payday and we’ll find a safety that can cover receivers on deep patterns.
Jairus Byrd
I think the Bills will use the tag on him.
I agree!!! Halfallujah!
Until Baalke proves me wrong I always assume anyone who is considered a first wave FA is pretty much out of the question for us. Maybe Eric Reid in the second round unless they deem Vaccarro or Elam worth moving up for.
cfc,
Roman has his moments where you scratch your head about what he was thinking, but overall the guy has done a great job imo. This offense looked unstoppable at times over the past few weeks and with a full offseason to work in the lab I think we’ll see some really amazing stuff next season.
When Grant used to question Roman about his use of VD I would always defend the plan and question the execution but then we switched to a more physically gifted QB and our offense didn’t change any. That’s not really true but I don’t feel that Roman has fully adapted his plans to utilize the arm strength of Colin. By the end of the season I’ve come to believe that maybe he’s not capable of doing so.
So that’s where you get my statement about wishing he was gone. Now I agree he deserves an off season and TC to adapt and change to the strengths of his new QB. For one he gets the benefit of the doubt that you can only do so much with that kind of change in the middle of the season and two because it might just be that we don’t have the kind of weapons in our wide receiver corp to truly take advantage of Colin’s gifts.
Although we haven’t had the need for one since Garcia, simply because we haven’t had a QB that could properly utilize one, it’s time the 49ers go and find a true X receiver. We have an old washed up one atm in Moss but we need a legitimate deep threat to take the top off of the defense and to give us that big strike ability. Give us that player and then we’ll see if Roman knows what to do with him.
Dwayne Bowe!
Although I’m not a fan of his he’d certainly fit the bill but as I mentioned just a bit ago that’s just not the kind of move Baalke has been prevalent to make. To make matters worse we’d probably have to use a first round pick to get one and doing that would be the same as cutting AJ as it would be admitting he was a mistake.
It’s pathetic when you have 2 pro bowl safeties that know they can’t let anyone get behind them, and then somehow, they get beat by 10 yards. A receiver has a Chance to catch a pass, fall down and then get up, make a move and still score??? Wow! Our secondary has to be upgraded.
Congrats to 49erGirl for winning the blog pick’em:

Great job 49erGirl!
Life goes on everyone, good game, we deserve to lose, championship teams don’t go down 28-6. Blame the refs whatever, it will be a very interesting off season. First thing I would do, is not resigned Randy Moss, his body language and energy said it all. Culliver and Rogers just sucked, fumbled hurt, our special teams are just not that special, giving up a 108 yard return. Are you freaking serious, we almost won with all of those mistakes.
That just goes to show you how really poorly we executed yesterday. Look how muxh we have to complain about. We didnt play or execute very well yesterday. You can’t keep falling asleep at the start of games and then trying to come back.
