Former 49ers Director of Player Personnel Tom Gamble is going to the Eagles to be their Vice President of Player Personnel. Gamble was an assistant for the Eagles’ personnel department fro 1988 to 1994, and his father was the president of the Eagles from ’86 to ’95.
Gamble has a sterling reputation in the league. It will be very interesting to see what this does to the 49ers, because he obviously had a lot of influence on which players the 49ers acquired over the last eight seasons.
This was Gamble’s job description on the 49ers: “While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts.”
The Philadelphia Eagles’ website describes his new job like this: “Gamble will report directly to General Manager Howie Roseman and work in both the college and pro personnel departments.”
The job descriptions are remarkably similar. I don’t what to make of this. Does it seem to you like a lateral move? I’m not sure. Perhaps he got more money.

I would rather be a VP instead of Director. Similar responsibilities but at a higher level, increased pay and a bigger office.
Next headline I’d like to see is The 49ers hire Cris Ault as offensive consultant/equanimity director.
+1,2 and 3
If I can see more passing from CK, hire Ault immediately. Some of the passing plays were terrible. I’m more then OK with V Davis and Crabtree, but we got no no. 2 WR.
Blame has to go to the right Dept’s. The 1st play of the game was a beautiful pass to VD (negated by flag of course) but still great.
The game was plenty of…”and its off his fingertips”, that can happen against the Rams, not the SB. Very sloppy team that showed up that day, happens to be our team.
We will get #6 very soon.
1000+
Indeed
Higher Level “Tittle”. More money perhaps. Same duties. Seems mostly like he took the same job, but back home.
No “Higher Level ‘Tittle”. The only Tittle in league history was Y. A.
I’m curious how much input Mr. Gamble had in the 2012 draft.
Im not worried. i think balkee had the most influence on who we drafted. now he just needs another pro collegecscout. maybevhire 2. 1 for pro 1 for college
Grant, TG may have joined with an incentive clause in the contract stating that he meet certain goals by such and such date, he gets a promotion.
BTW, he did get bumped from Director to VP with the move.

This should not come as a surprise….
Ouch
Yikes! Sounds like the 49ers will be lucky to get a 3rd or 4th Round pick in 2014 .
It’s posturing in my opinion. AS is a bargain as a starter for $8M and better than 16 other NFL starting QBs.
“AS is … better than 16 other NFL starting QBs.”
With the 49ers supporting cast, ok, but with the teams that are in the market that ranking will probably drop if that is where he ends up.
Jack,
For not knowing definitively, you sure speak in absolutes! Often to the the point of pompousness. :)
I prefer to have an opinion and debate it instead of hiding behind a TBD.
Jack,
Since when do I hide here? Ask Bay, Jordo, BigP, MD, you, etc, etc. Are you kidding? TBD is just another tag for me. :)
Hofer,
your fairytale illusion is about to come to an end. Family member or not. Many teams will need a QB in 2013. While some may sniff in Smith’s direction, none will throw money his way or over commit to him.
Smith is an average stop gap QB. Dilfer 2.0, David Carr 2.0 whatever you want to call it. The only chance we had to get a decent draft pick for him is if multiple teams wanted him. Then and only then could we bargain with teams.
Your comment that Smith is better than 16 other QB’s is immensely laughable. It is why you are no longer taken seriously on this board. Sadly there was a time when you use to be.
I think of all the Alex Smith is great comments we’ve had to endure over the year, my favorites are the come from behind victories.
AS would crap his pants all game checking down, leading his team to impressive three and outs. His record setting defense of 2011 would shut teams out the entire game. Smith would finally put a scoring drive together in the waning moments and finally score. His cult would then call him “clutch and pro bowl worthy”. They would then attach game winning drive or 4th quarter comeback to his resume lol.
I will give Smith this. He is a class act with great character. He might as well be Houdini. He magically turned no pocket awareness, no escapability, no deep field vision, check downs galore, no passing production, low scoring production and he parlayed it into an 8 year career.
TBD! Good time! ( NOT REALLY )
Bayarea, your crusty old ways are showing once again. In fact you are now the joke of the blog with your undying hate towards Alex Smith. Seek help now.
Bay, you’re delusional from still being “numb” and bitter about the SB loss. Look at the game again, AS wasn’t starting. Your blame game is crusty and old. Move along…
@ Bay:
I call b/s. Produce “all the Alex Smith is great comments” you’ve had to endure over the years. In fact, other than one off comments from trolls, produce any “Alex Smith is great” comments. You can’t. You know why? Because they don’t exist.
It’s yet another straw man argument you ginned up in a vain attempt to hide the real issue: All of the “Alex Smith sucks” comments that you, jordan and other ignoramuses spewed out over the years. You blamed Smith for the team’s failures and ridiculed those who suggested that maybe the coaching instability and substandard coaching may have been responsible. Harbaugh’s arrival, Smith’s continued improvement and the team’s subsequent success settled that debate – coaching matters, both for a QB’s development and team success.
Of course, rather than admit you were wrong, you’ve tried to rewrite history and recast the debate as being over whether or not Smith was “elite.” It wasn’t. It was about whether or nor he was a bust, whether he was good enough to win with in the NFL.
How fragile is your ego that you can’t let this go, even now? The team has come off of two very successful years, and the future looks bright. But you can’t enjoy it, and it looks like you can’t enjoy it because your ego can’t handle admitting you were wrong about Alex Smith. Why else would you so desperately try to rewrite history? And why do you feel compelled to relentlessly attack Hofer and his credibility? Do you think you and your credibility compare favorably? You don’t.
An ego as delicate and needy as yours is a tiresome thing. We shouldn’t have to endure your continual attempts to prop it up.
Clod, FDM and Hof,
I smile as I type this sentence. My proof exists right here. If I had typed this one or two years ago, there would have been 10 different posters coming to Alex’s aid. As it stands there are just three of you dinosaurs coming to his aid. A dwindling group. I have respect for you though. It’s quite valiant for you three to continue to fight for a player that for the most part has been so average.
Bayarea you are a total joke now with thinking that because only a certain few want to engage in another AS debate, it means something. Get a life man, the rest of us have moved on, your still stuck in reverse. Grow up!
Grow up Prime? More like stop being stubborn and crusty like an old man trying to return soup in a deli.
The guy never understood about winning football. He is a fanatsy football fan, he admitted as much that entertaining football was more important than winning football.
He likes CK big play ability, what he does not like is how the kid could not manage the final 4 plays to win a SB. Talent alone cannot win championships, expereince, brains, and talent can though.
No FDM,
what I know is that if Alex had been supported by the special teams and defense that CK was supported by during the regular season and playoffs, he would have been the same losing QB that he had been his previous 7 years.
Comical that it is me that was wrong lol. Only in the eyes of the Smithers……
@Bayarea I believe calling Alex avg is what most who have defended him have done. I’ve heard over and over he is about the #16 rated starting QB out of 32 starters. 16th out of 32 hmmmm that would make him avg. Is there anyone out there who thinks he is alot better than #16?
Over and over by whom OC? The Smithers cling to more of a top ten for Smith. Guys like me paint him in the bottom third.
The proof though is in the interest that he generates in the open market which in my opinion will be little to none.
While the Smithers would like to paint me as this guy who absolutely hates Smith, they come back with ridiculous scenarios that had us receiving a first or second round pick for Smith. Like I said, the proof will lie in the interest that Smith receives….
Is there anyone out there who thinks A.S. is a whole lot better than #16? I have’nt heard anyone here make that arguement since DS left. Hey #16 in the world ai’nt bad.
OC,
who says he’s 16th? If he were 16th there would be lots of interest in him.
His strength is taking care of the ball and checking it down. You say 16th, I say more like 25th. In the end, the interest he generates will tell us the truth.
@Bayarea I think we are all pretty clear on how you feel. I’m just wondering if any one out there feels A.S. is better than #16? you say #25 hell thats not that big a difference . My point is i do’nt think anyone here is going out of there way to defend A.S. and that the subject does’nt seem to come up untill you bring it up.[other than when we discuss the 49er draft and whether we will get picks for him and when Jack says we will resign him]
Bay,
Smith was ranked 17th I believe by Jaworski last offseason. My thinking though is that a lot of that had to do with Harbaugh and his system. When he had poor coaching and poor supporting casts in the years prior his ranking was near the bottom.
My argument is, if you look at the teams who are in the market for a QB, they more reflect those early 49ers teams thus his ranking will drop.
Alex Smith is the 2013 version of Tommy Maddox. Go look at Maddox’s career and it is almost identical to Smith’s, right down to being replaced due to injury and having the team reach the Super Bowl with the replacement.
Jack refresh my memory was it mark Malone the steelers replaced Maddux with? If thats correct boy did the steelers make a mistake there.
Come on old coach,
look at the top of this thread. Was I really the one that brought it up? I’m just adding comments to a subject that someone else brought up.
or was it neal O’Donnell well anyways still a bad move by the steelers
Coach,
The Steelers replaced Maddox with Roethlisberger, and have since been to 3 Super Bowls, winning 2.
@Jack Holy crap i did not realize Roethlisberger has been around that long. you mean Terry Bradshaw does’nt start for the Steelers anymore.
>>I think of all the Alex Smith is great comments we’ve had to endure over the year, my favorites are the come from behind victories. AS would crap his pants all game checking down, leading his team to impressive three and outs.
At least he was able to engineer more than 6 combined points on the board in the first halves of big games.
>>if Alex had been supported by the special teams and defense that CK was supported by during the regular season and playoffs…
Luckily CK did have special teams support as well. Otherwise it’s a big ZERO for the offense in the first halves of the NFCC and SB.
Rib,
you know how pathetic you sound? By the way, nice avatar. You should join the support group of guys that wear jerseys of past average players. I am sure you could partner up with guys that wear Joey Harrington, Jamarcus Russell jerseys and have a pity party.
So ribico…. Are you saying you’d take Alex smith over ck right now?
MD,
let him have his fantasy lol. We have a defense to work on….
@md heck no. Just calling out bay’s illogic. Besides, In Harbaugh we trust, right? Except when it comes to defense, kickers, STs, OCs… everything except QBs.
BTW, tell me where in my comments there is anything that’s untrue?
@bay, glad to see my avatar still has the effect of a red cape waved in front of a stuck bull. Ole!
Sorry for the I told you so but this is what myself and many others here have been saying. Holding out for a second or third round pick for Alex Smith is a pipe dream. Alex Smith is not seen as the type of QB that if you miss your chance at grabbing him you wont find anything else better. Also the 49ers have zero leverage given the obvious fact that they will release him before April 1st anyway to avoid having to guarantee his contract.
However it doesn’t actually give any reasons as to why he’s a long shot for Browns but all the others make sense. They also left out the Jags.
All this does is increase the odds that Alex decides to stay and agrees to a back up type salary heavy with incentives if he had to start for an injured Colin.
If no team is willing to offer him the starting job then it would make sense to a smart kid like Alex to stick around. He wouldn’t have to uproot his family, he wouldn’t have to learn a new system and he’d have a locker room that would already be there for him if he had to come in and start for whatever reason. If he doesn’t get any big sniffs on his second chance at free agency then I think he’s smart enough to realize the reality he’s living in and make the smarter decision for him and his family overall.
doubt AS takes a restructured contract if he remains a 9r….what would be the point….

——————-
Because a restructured deal with the 49ers could very well end up being the best offer he gets.
best offer isn’t always about the money….
You do like your … don’t ya? “best offer isn’t always about the money” I’m pretty sure that was the point I was making, especially when I said: “He wouldn’t have to uproot his family, he wouldn’t have to learn a new system and he’d have a locker room that would already be there for him if he had to come in and start for whatever reason.”
i don’t understand your ‘You do like your … don’t ya? ”
u said a restructured contract could be the best deal AS gets…..
why should AS restructure to stay with niners….he probably only makes 2 mill over an average backup QB but AS is clearly better than average backup….CK is at minimal cost and his contract is not going to be negotiated up this year IMO (unless AS leaves providing the room for a slight bump up)….and maybe AS gets released because there isn’t a market out there and ends up signing a 6 million contract with another team but that does not support the crux of your argument that AS best deal could be a restructured down contract with the niners…. niners are in the bind why would AS help them to ship him elsewhere unless it was to a team AS wants to go to…
Not surprising. I still think a 2014 conditional pick is the way to go – let his performance with his new team dictate what round pick the 49ers get.
The KKolb and MFlynn debacles didn’t help so teams are pulling back. A 3rd or 4th is better than just RELEASED. TBD.
Why would any team help the 49ers out by giving them anything for Smith? There is almost 0 reason to do so, since the 49ers have no leverage, so why help them out?
Also, objectively take a look at that list of teams and ask yourself if adding Smith gets them over the hump. None of those teams have the necessary supporting pieces in place.
This is very similar to last season with Larry Grant. Many here thought “for sure a team would be willing to sign him as a restricted free agent, all it would cost is a 7th round pick right.” We saw how much interest he generated. Unfortunately the local perspective creates a higher perceived value then what is reality, and I think we will see it play out again in this instance.
As I have said all along, expect Smith to be a 49er in 2013.
Jack,
I agreed with everything you said up to the last sentence. Just don’t see the team wanting to keep his salary. It was a modest deal but we need the money to sign other players.
The only reason has been nullified by Morts’ report of non interest among any team. Could be like last year. However, I wouldn’t bet on him coming back to the 49ers this time around.
“As I have said all along, expect Smith to be a 49er in 2013.”
There is a 5% chance of that happening. Teams will either hold off waiting for the 9ers to release AS not giving them a draft choice and then sign him. Additionally, paying AS $8M to be a backup isn’t necessary if JH is the QB guru we all think he is. TBD.
Glad to see you agree there is a chance Hofer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcGj57cQIeg
Nice!!! lol
I’d be surprised if Alex is back at the 49ers – 49ers won’t keep him at his current salary. And if he is released I imagine he’d want to go somewhere he has a chance of starting.
Teams won’t give up much for him because he has a stigma as being not quite good enough. Any team that takes him as a starter will be looking for a long term replacement in the draft.
But he does have some value to teams that will be drafting a young QB for the future this year – good mentor and has proven he won’t disrupt the locker room when it is time for him to stand aside.
not taking a deep dive but if niners ended up releasing AS i wonder if he would look at broncos….i could see him being able to run a peyton type offense….with a year of tutelage … even if the OC wanted to take back the reins from peyton when peyton is gone
Jack, after sleeping on it, do you still think the 9ers will pay AS $8M to backup CK in 2013? Does that make good business sense when they need dollars to pay some of the other players and fill the gaps from 2012?
I’ve been saying that he will be back for over a month and my opinion hasn’t changed.
@Jack If the 9ers do decide to bring Alex Smith back, they will have to cut salary else where to tie up their good young players. For the sake of arguement lets say restrucuring current contracts wo’nt be enough, who do you think they will release other than the obvious IE Ginn, Moss, L. Davis.

That didn’t answer his question. He asked if he would be back at the $8m salary?
I’d expect to find a three-legged ballerina before Alex Smith is the backup at $8 million dollars.
That would be the Nigerian all male Ballet you speak of.

Coach,
Good question. This will be a very telling offseason for the Baalke/Harbaugh regime. So far they have not had take the step of releasing a contributing veteran who has time remaining on their contract.
Harbaugh is appears to be very loyal, almost to a fault (Akers), and it will be interesting to see how they handle things.
My list of potenial cuts includes:
Akers
Manningham
Haralson
Goodwin
and remember they also picked up $1.6 million against the cap due to de-escalators in the Brooks contract putting them at about $119m with a cap of $121m.
Jack i agree with you on Akers Harralson i think we might resign but for less than he was earning Goodwin might be gone also but i believe we might release Goldson. I think Whitner and his skill sets are the same and whitner comes a hell of alot cheaper. I also think they will trade\release A.Smith those 2 moves will save them some where around 16 million.
Coach,
Goldson is not under contract so he doesn’t save anything.
I doubt Goldson will be playing in the scarlett and gold 2013.
Jack that 119 out of 121 figure you’re using does’nt reflect Goldons 7 mill?
Coach,
That is where they sit with the guys under contract for 2013, so Goldson is not included.
Wow 119 out of 121 without Goldson, now i’m really sure they wo’nt resign him.
But why Haralson?
The run D is good but still wasn’t as last year when he was playing. And Aldon Smith seems to have late season injuries and need to find his optimum workload.
Unless they have someone better than Haralson in waiting, why do want to decrease the depth?
Thanks for the link. The “borderline” comment says it all. Nolan drafting him over Rodgers is one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries, rivaling who built the pyramids. There should be a claim against his malpractice insurance.
Get serious, Hofer…Jack musters facts, so he has informed opinions. When opinions are born out by facts, they become strong.
As for Smith, his Passer rating before JH was 72.2. Under JH it has been 95.1. Alex should negotiate a long term backup contract with SF, serve as a coach for Kaep and be happy he gets to play once in a while and not get beat up every Sunday. It would be a great move for the Niners.
That’s right.
Because if a team is high on Smith they would make sure that everybody knows it, so the Niners could ask for a higher price.
Those speculations that come as “reports” are mostly annoying.
But that’s life in the offseason.
Oh well….can Draft weekend come earlier, please!
An alternate take that’s not so hater-friendly.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000138395/article/alex-smith-49ers-big-winners-with-vick-off-table
“And let’s be clear: When you have the player considered to be the most coveted quarterback on the market, you have a substantial trade chip.
Smith is due $7.5 million next season to go with a $1 million roster bonus next month. He’s not cheap, but it’s in the neighborhood of what Vick should earn from the Eagles in 2013. Given the landscape that Vick and the Eagles helped create, Smith’s price tag won’t scare teams off.”
Want to bet?
Rib,
Please explain to me how Vick re-signing with Philly will have any impact on Smith’s value.
Does it change Cleveland’s situation? Does it fix the Jets cap problems? Is Arizona all of a sudden not part of the NFC West?
Nobody will trade more than a 7th for Smith. They shouldn’t even do that considering they can get him without giving up a thing.
@Jack
Addition by subtraction. One less body in the pool, no matter what the other team’s situations are.
@bay. No. Haters are known welchers, not going near that with a 10 foot pole.
Well slap me, I agree with Jordo. But it says more about the other teams’ recognition of the bind the Niners are in.
“Haters are known welchers”
When did Prime become a “hater”…..
Jack, does Prime owe somebody money?
Prime bet me and lost. He said he would stay off the site for a week. Grant busted him out using an alias three days later. Pretty much a welcher in my book.
$1,670,688 with escalation incentives up to 2.5 million, for a one year deal to remain the backup behind Kaepurnicus.
“…does Prime owe somebody money?”
Yes, he bet Adam707 $100 that Gore would not rush for 1000 yards.
@bay ok, thanks. Remind me not to make one week bets with Prime.
I will only bet with an arbitrator present who takes possession of the prize until the winner is determined…or a Paypal account.
Smithers,
what do you get when you crack on egg on your head? Egg on face….. Jack we knew this would happen. Unfortunate too because I was hoping the 49ers would get something for their investment….
I told everyone that the Niners would get zilch for Smith. Nobody is going to pay him 8 million. He’d be lucky to get half that much.
Yeah when we said it would be tough to get anything more than a fourth rounder they laughed us out of town. There just isn’t much value for Trent Dilfer II.
@Bay Jack believes the 49ers will and should keep Alex Smith
I would love Alex to be our backup. @ 25% of his current salary only.
Then he will be where he was destined to be….. A backup.
I just know we have a draft plan and a free agent plan already in place and now he goes to the Eagles with this information.
As long is Pete Carroll is not on the list, don’t really care where anyone else falls. I just want to win a Super Bowl and let the pieces land where they belong.
Hey Neal,
Ever wonder what happened to DS? She may have been spotted:
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr03/2012/11/15/11/enhanced-buzz-20960-1352995901-1.jpg
LMAO at Nick,
Actually DS has not cross my mind in a while, but I am glad that Nick found her.
Seriously, I laughed so hard I may have damaged internal organs….. That is so freaking funny.
Thanks for posting my Grandma. I was wondering how she was doing after the 49ers loss. Better luck next time, ta ta.
She or it was here as ONENINER! This Blog is much better without all the nonesense!
Anyone notice that Ahmad Brooks lost out on $1.6M pay this year because he fell short on # of snaps by 1%? He also got screwed because he needed the team to win 12 games and we won 11.5.
If the team wants loyal players, they’ll pay that money to him anyway…
Brooks signed it. End of story. I like brooks a lot. Kind of the unsung hero of the niners D. Much like R. Mcdonald. With that being said, Brooks had a terrible SuperBowl. Offsides(turned into TD)and took horrible angle on blitz and let Flacco scramble and hit Boldin 30 or 40 yards down the field. I don’t feel bad for him one bit.
His contract had a lot of funny money in it anyways. It looked good on paper, but it was actually commiserate with his level of performance.
Brooks won the Atlanta game for us in the end…
Gamble is from New Jersey and his father used to be President of the Eagles. It’s a move back home with the same job title – no brainer. At least Barrows did his homework.

sad bay and 4th…
Just a month or so ago, no one on this blog even knew that Tom Gamble even worked for the niners. Grant covered that quite well. I have a sneaking hunch that we’ll be seeing some ‘familiar’ free agents get picked up, as well some draft picks that we hoped for, by the Eagles. Maybe the niners can trade Alex to the Eagles for Vick therefore having continuity in running QB’s…? Chip Kelly likes Alex…
No thanks don’t need a convicted felon and all-around douche like Vick the Prick.
Well, that was certainly academic….
Was Gamble forced out in anyway? I thought the wording of a quote from their GM was a bit odd “He had a great run in San Francisco.” That’s that kind of thing you hear when they had already left or maybe not left on their own terms. My first impression when I read that was to go and check to see if Gamble was in fact still with the team prior to being hired by the Eagles.
Maybe Harbaugh wanted more say, or didn’t like some of the players he was coming up with? I’m just throwing things out there but I think it’s an odd move as well. Why leave a team that just lost the SuperBowl and has a great chance at returning for a lateral position on a team in transition?
Because he wants to return home to his roots and still have basically the same job?
The 49ers should hire Scot McGloughan back right away. He is an amazing evaluator of talent. If memory serves me correct, he only had two real busts……..the first one being a 3rd rounder out of Wisconsin in the 2006 draft that was a wide receiver who’s name I can’t remember……..Brandon something and the other being 1st round pick Kentwan Balmer (but I could see his logic behind the Balmer pick at the time). You could also throw Glenn Coffee in there as well but every other pick he has hit on. He drafts large, rugged players that don’t wear down and almost never get injured. Hiring McGloughan would also weaken the Seahawks. Look at Seattle’s last 3 drafts……..they are incredible. They have McGloughan’s fingerprints all over them. This last Seahawks draft was incredible (i.e. 1st rd-Bruce Irvin, 2nd round-Bobby Wagner, 3rd round-Russel Wilson 4th rd-Robert Turbin……wow).
Not gonna happen. I’m not so sure McGlouhans’ fingerprints were all over Russel Wilson. Ok I just vomited a little in my mouth.
@Justin
Excellent post.
He’s an alcoholic that couldn’t show up to team functions sober. Pass.
It’s all about familiy.. Grew up there and his familiy is getting older
Might Baalke target Desmond Bryant to bolster the 49er defensive front?
Why the lateral move? To be closer to Family? The situation reminds me (a little) of when Scot McCloughan left shortly before the draft.
The silver linings are that Baalke likely has the draft well organized by now, and there has been talk of Gamble leaving for quite some time so it can’t be a surprise.

Consider that the Eagles pick before the niners in each round

This kid can do what the 49er safeties cannot. Play the ball not worrying about the receiver, diagnose the route and anticipate where the ball is being thrown while attacking it in the air.
