49ers extend NT Ian Williams

The 49ers just announced they have re-signed nose tackle Ian Williams to a two-year contract.

This is Trent Baalke’s official statement: “We are very pleased to extend the contract of a young, talented player like Ian. He will have the opportunity to continue to grow in our defense, and we look forward to his future development. Paraag and Drew deserve credit for working hard to put this deal together.”

Williams’ extension could indicate the 49ers’ expect their free agents nose tackles, Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois, to sign elsewhere. If those two leave, Williams will have a good shot to become the Niners’ starting nose tackle next season.

What do you think this contract extension indicates?

Well, I think they know that we need to address CB first and then DL next. How big is Ian?? Last time I checked he was a small lineman, how will he hold up at NT?

  2. Jack Hammer says:

    Williams is the starting NT

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Agree but who will be his back up, Tukuafu or Divens or do they pick up someone else?

    • Scooter_McG says:

Big leap from 32 snaps as the 3rd stringer to starter. But Baalke and Tomsula know what they are doing – they obviously think he is ready. Will be interesting to see if they bring in someone through the draft or FA to compete, or go with the PS guys from last season.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

I think the fact that they are considering giving the starting NT job to someone with so little experience is a probably an indication of how much they intend to use the position in the near future. After paying Sopoaga all that money for so few snaps their probably feeling a bit burned.

  3. MidWestNiner says:

    Good move.

  4. Mood_Indigo says:

All I can say is that in Tomsula we trust.

  5. MikeinSF#2 says:

Barrows and Maiocco reporting the Niners are the leading team to get Miami CB Sean Smith. I like that move.

  6. BigP says:

It indicates that the Niners want to keep young, talented players on the team.

  7. Brotha Tuna says:

    @ Ian
    Invest, young man!

  8. six-ace-deuce says:

Good move to re-up Williams. I think RJF is a goner, unfortunately, Sopoaga isn’t going to find the money he was making before. Sopoaga is likely to return at a greatly reduced rate.

  9. Brotha Tuna says:

It seems like if the team loses two DL to f.a. that there will be two job openings for either draft or UFA.

    • BOS9er says:

      Tuna
No more UFA DL please 4 out of 8 is quite enough thank you. Maybe we should invest a pick in the mid rounds. Im only saying this because ive seen first hand (here in NE) what trying to reinvent the wheel gets u. BB constantly tried to outsmart everyone by picking guys up off the street and “coaching them up” and that left the D with a dearth of talent on the line, and not a single playmaker besides wilfork. Its ok to dabble in a UFA here and there but if %50 of any given unit is made up of those guys ur in trouble.

  10. NYniner says:

The coaches never play backups during the regular season… Can’t tell whether some of these guys can play… Maybe they learned a lesson last season and start using the whole roster

  11. AES* says:

Sounds as if Soa’p and RJF’ departure will be a foregone conclusion.

Ian Williams may be sharing time with Jesse Williams come September.

  12. Brodie2Washington says:

The 49ers play their subs so sparingly, it’s hard to tell how good Tukuafu and Williams actually are. If they were being groomed all along, the 49ers D-line situation may not be as dire as previously thought.

    • BOS9er says:

      Brodie
If they were grooming them last year dont u think they would have played them even a little? Especially with injuries at the end of the season

      • Brodie2Washington says:

I was thinking the same thing… but then I read recent reports (which make no sense to me) that Fangio does not like to sub to keep players fresh.

This goes totally against convention. Remember those deep D-lines the 49ers used vs Miami way back in the 80′s during the Super Bowl? Guys like Kelcher and Big Hands Johnson rotating in… the league followed suit.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Walsh always said that you HAVE to have pass rush pressure in the 4th Quarter. The Steelers rotate guys. I don’t know what Vic has against that. I will note that Vic has been good and I doubt I could beat him out in a job interview!

  13. NYniner says:

Percy Harvin went to the sea chickens for a one and a seven this draft … Real surprised TB didn’t try to up that with all the picks they have

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Actually 1 & 7 this year and mid-rounder in ’14. Maybe TB thinks he could get two players and a “Maybe” with those picks.

    • George says:

This year Seattle does not have the cap issue we do. Mike Sando has an analysis (link below). Here is part of what he says:

“That means the Seahawks are trading cheap labor as represented by draft choices for the right to overpay an established player from another team. This generally is not a good trade-off, especially for a team that has drafted as well as Seattle has drafted. However, Harvin is a special talent. He is also just 24 years old. That combination could justify the exception Seattle made in closing this deal. . . .The Seahawks have drafted four Pro Bowl players over the past three seasons. All four are under contract at low cost. . . .”

  14. George says:

Grant, do you think Carlos Rogers can play safety?

    • Scooter_McG says:

I’ve been thinking the same thing George. He’s not afraid to mix it up in the trash – that’s why he’s been covering the slot receiver. And he’s a smart player. I think he’d actually make a good transition.

      • George says:

He’s tall enough, but usually safeties are heavier, no? But with a 3-4, does it matter as much? I confess ignorance.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Not always George. Rogers wouldn’t be an enforcer like Goldson, he’d be more of the traditional coverage FS. He’s got enough size about him to handle that role.

  15. Big niner says:

Pacman, going against fischer and the lambs twice a year will be fun. He might be a good cornerback the under the radar.

  16. Big niner says:

DeAngelo Hall has just been released by the Redskins. I wonder if he still has anything left in the tank.

  17. richard says:

Our nt were not playing more than 20% of the time due too nickel defense. we have 5 picks for four main positions such as wr, cb, dt-de, and safety. Our team doesn’t reley next year on more than 2 positions so go balke in the draft!

  18. Big niner says:

Anquan Boldin is the Forty Niner!!!!!@

  19. richard says:

now maybe get to playoffs with more than one effective wide-receiver
