49ers release Akers

The 49ers just announced they’ve release kicker David Akers.

Here is Trent Baalke’s official statement: “The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years. He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”

Do you think the 49ers should sign a kicker, or should they draft one, and in which round? Do you know any kicker prospects the 49ers should target?

Either florida kickers, FSU or UOF. We need to find the next legatron.

  2. Tony says:

They should draft the kicker from Florida in the 6th round

  3. Razoreater says:

    Ya, bring in the Legonator!!

  4. RednGold1 says:

Any team, to even begin to think about drafting a kicker would need to have at least fifteen draft picks going in. If ya got the 15 then go BKA (best kicker available). I wouldn’t be concerned about which round. I would be concerned about filling the position.

    • Razoreater says:

I wouldn’t be concerned about which round…as long as it was not before late in the 4th.

  5. Jack Hammer says:

Given the recent posts, they should trade up and draft a defensive back who can double as a kicker.

  6. Coffee's for closers says:

The fact that most everyone seems to be familiar with Dustin Hopkins suggests he’ll probably have to be taken a bit sooner then we’d like to take a kicker. How high of a pick would you be willing to use on a kicker?

  7. George says:

Do you think that their releasing him today means that they have worked something out with Jenkins?

    • George says:

Here’s what Sando said this afternoon:
The 49ers are trimming salary as they seek to comply with the $123.9 million salary cap by the NFL deadline Tuesday.

  8. Neal says:

Good thing that Ck was starting in Akers bad year, as the Niners had to rely on him big time in 2011, because of bad red zone play.

  9. nofear4by4 says:

don’t like the feeling of not trusting your kicker…..would suggest use 5th round pick but really this is a non-issue, Balke and team will know the appropriate pick to use for kicker they probably have more recon info than anybody on this thread….

  10. MidWestNiner says:

    Draft Hopkins.

  11. AES* says:

    Good luck David Akers.
    Hope you find success.

  12. Heidelberg Slim says:

A great kicker is much more important than a merely good kicker. Draft one regardless of where it shows up on the board…

  13. NYniner says:

The bad luck has left the building… Akers 14 years 0-2 in SB, Moss 14 yrs 0-2 in sb… Now we can go out and win one

  14. NinersRoc says:

We’ll definitely grab a kicker in the later rounds 4-7 AND bring in a free agent. I don’t see us bringing only a rookie or only a vet. There’s the guy we’ve had on and off the roster (Trevechio??). We’ll go with a lot of competition at the position. We can’t go another year with a suspect kicker. It’s too stressful!

    • bayareafanatic says:

Championship team needs a championship kicker. Bring in Phil Dawson for a year. Draft a kicker in the 7th round and let him marinate for a year.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Dawson like most kickers will want more than a one year contract Bay. He will probably want more money than what the Niners want to to invest at that position.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        Midwest,
I thought you’d still be working on seeking a trade for our worst CB who is going to be 32 and will make $7 million this year.
Dawson is of advanced age. He will not secure a multi year big money deal. And multi year deals are just semantics. It’s the guaranteed money that counts.
If you don’t believe me, just look at Alex Smith’s deal. When he signed it I had to listen to the Smithers talk about the $24 – $30 million Smith just made. In reality we know that the Niners could cut that type of player whenever they want.

For a guy who complains frequently that other commenters are interested only in fighting, you sure like to instigate arguments by needlessly posting provocative b/s.

Let it go, man. Your Alex Smith obsession is cringe-inducing. You were wrong about him. So what? Everyone makes mistakes. Just learn from it and move on.

      • BigP says:

        Claude,
This is DJ 9erluv………I’d like to give a shot out to Bay Area Fanatic, Niner lover and Smith hater. This one is for you playa.

        Bay,
Lol, we always have fun here.

      • FDM says:

If there is one guarantee in life is that you could take 10 years off of this blog, comeback and find Bayareafanatic talking about Alex Smith. Its unreal how much this guy loves Alex.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

It’s funny when you are ass hurt how someone can use multiple examples and speak on more than one topic, yet they only gravitate to the one example……
Funny how no one said I was wrong though….

      • MidWestNiner says:

I’d respond Bay, but you will somehow link it back to Alex Smith for no reason, so I’m not going to bother.

      • FDM says:

Bay you have been wrong multiple times for multiple years, we are just trying to give you a break. But I guess the Alex analogies live forever in your soul.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        FDM,
do you put lipstick on your cheecks before you talk out of your arse?
Please bring up what I’ve been wrong about?

      • elGuapo says:

DJ 9erluuuuuv!! That’s the JAM right therrrr!! lmao!!! Brings a tear to ol’ elGuapo’s eye!

The sweeeeeetest QB in the world, can be the meeeeeeanest QB in the world … if you trade him a- way

  15. Nick says:

David Akers LEFT … Pun intended

  16. Coffee's for closers says:

Grant you didn’t mention where you would get a kicker from.

  17. mr. t says:

    trade grant for revis

  18. Razoreater says:

Sean Smith CB Miami wants $7.5 million a year. I hope Baalke does not fall for that. You could get a better corner in Talib for a lot less.
