Dorsey on Tomsula: “He picked me up from the airport and was talking a hundred miles per hour.”

The newest 49er, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, spoke on a conference call Wednesday afternoon. Here’s a transcript.

Q: What was your reaction when you heard the 49ers were interested in your services?

DORSEY: I was excited. I really look forward to the opportunity. I got the call from my agent, and I hopped on a flight first thing.

Q: Where do you make your offseason home?

DORSEY: Baton Rouge, but I’ve been in Pensacola training.

Q: What do you like about the 49ers?

DORSEY: Just the way they play, their passion for the game and the success that they’ve had. I think everybody can see that they have a winning formula. I’m excited to be a part of that.

Q: What was your interaction with Jim Tomsula like? Did you guys hit it off?

DORSEY: Oh yeah. He’s got a lot of energy. He’s a great guy. He picked me up from the airport last night and he was talking a hundred miles per hour. I was ready. He took me to the facility last night, and we talked about a lot of stuff. He knows a lot and I’m excited to get the opportunity to work with him.

Q: Did he give you an indication of how exactly you’re going to be used on the defensive line?

DORSEY: He told me I’m going to have an opportunity to compete and play. That’s all I need. That’s all I’m really looking for.

Q: Are you OK with playing nose tackle?

DORSEY: Yeah, I’m OK with anything. I knew coming here that I could play anywhere. Whatever they say feet, I’ll try my best at that position.

Q: Which 49ers were you able to meet?

DORSEY: I sat down with Justin Smith. He’s a funny guy. He’s got a lot of passion. Hopefully I can learn from him, we can work together and he can give me some pointers.

Q: Are you pleased with your career so far?

DORSEY: I don’t really buy into everybody else’s expectations. I have my own expectations to come in and work hard and compete the best that I can. Everybody is entitled to their opinion.

Q: What do you like about the atmosphere at the 49ers?

DORSEY: It’s a positive atmosphere. Everybody is working hard and talking to each other. You can just feel it when you walk in the building. It’s like a big family. Everybody is high-fiving each other, talking to each other. It’s a different environment than what I’m used to. I’m excited to get going.

Q: Did you run into Charles Woodson today?

DORSEY: No.

Q: You played a lot of defensive end with the Chiefs. Do you think you’re better suited to be an inside player, like you were in college?

DORSEY: I don’t limit myself. I’m just thankful I can come in and compete.

Q: They still list you as 297 pounds – that’s what you were coming out of college. How much do you weigh now?

DORSEY: I’m close to it. That was six years ago. I’m still a work in progress.

Q: It’s still around the 300 mark?

DORSEY: It’s still close.

Q: What were some of the things Justin Smith told you?

DORSEY: He just said get ready to work hard. You can tell he’s passionate about what he does. He loves to talk football. He lives football.

    Welcome aboard Glenn Dorsey.

  5. Scooter_McG says:

Smith, McDonald, Dorsey, Williams, Dobbs, Tukuafu, Jerod-Eddie… Usually only about 5 DL active on game day, so I’m thinking DL might be off the cards as a high round pick. Still could happen if a quality player falls to them, but certainly no longer a need.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Jerrod-Eddie, Tuk, and Dobbs are solid but not locks. As you say if the right guy falls they might grab BPA. Some udfa’s to compete in Camp.

    • claude balls says:

      @ Scooter:

I think it just means that the 49ers are setting themselves up to take the best player available with their early draft picks. If Baalke signs a competent safety at a reasonable price, then the 49ers have no real needs (EXCEPT for another rotational pass rusher, but that’s my personal prejudice) and can focus exclusively on taking a difference maker, regardless of the position he plays.

Note: I think that is the conclusion you ultimately came to, which makes this comment completely unnecessary, but sometimes I just like reading what I write.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Spot on Claude. The Baalke way. I wouldn’t be surprised if they pick up one of the vet pass rushers too, though I feel the same way about that as I do about Woodson or Reed (which is, meh).

BPA in draft, though I do think 2 DBs and a WR will be in the mix in the first 3 rounds.

      • Folsom49er says:

        Very good point about BPA,

This is what I love about FA where the 49ers can find help & depth at certain spots therefore less likely to “whif” on the Draft in the early rounds.

  6. JP says:

Hopefully Justin Smith is able to pass along to these younger guys his work ethic and lead by example in terms of how to train and prepare for an NFL season. I remember when we resigned McDonald, one of the things he did was dedicate his offseason to sticking by Justin’s side. It’s certainly shown in his play. Hopefully the chain continues with the younger guys.

  7. Msclemons67 says:

” I have my own expectations to come in and work hard and compete the best that I can.”

Less than one day in the building and he already has the Harbaugh talking points down pat. Jim is a jedi master. Or maybe that bald kid from the Matrix.

  8. AES says:

Sorry Mr. Dorsey, but the expectations are always high in 49ers nation. 5 Superbowl championships and a trip to the big show last February has set the bar very high indeed.

Now, the stage is set for you to have a great run with the 49ers, and I believe that you can help us win SB #6. Looking forward to seeing you wear the Red&Gold and hopefully wear your SB ring as well.
    Welcome Mr. Dorsey

  9. dc9er says:

Here’s hoping he is a upgrade, hopefully coaching and scheme wise we are a better fit than the chiefs.

    • Scooter_McG says:

He proved at the Chiefs he is a more than capable starter in a 3-4. He may have the dreaded “bust” label in some parts of Chiefs-land, but that’s based on expectations a top-5 pick will be an all-pro, do it all himself kind of player. He hasn’t been that so far, but he is a guy that makes others around him better by doing a lot of dirty work.

Hopefully he turns into a pro-bowl calibre DT/DE with the 49ers, but even if his level of play is similar to that with the Chiefs he’s a sound pick-up.

      • TIM says:

The Chiefs played him out of position at DE.We will use him at NT and DT,like he played in college when he was such a beast and won every award they give.

      • Scooter_McG says:

I reckon Dorsey will play all over the line. Fill the RJF role. But I guess no-one will know until the 49ers outline how they intend to use him. Regardless, I think his best years are ahead of him.

  10. Msclemons67 says:

After seeing Cribbs’ goodbye to Cleveland I’m rethinking my position (didn’t want him on the 49ers).

  11. Steelematic says:

Clif avril a seahawk.. they keep getting better n we keep standing sti.. If we stay pat we will loose the west by 2 games. I hope these rookies you all want so bad are worth it. We have a young team our future is now. We need secondary help n i hope we have a plan. Harbaugh n balkee… #Lets Get It

    • BigP says:

Lol, what is so special about Cliff Avril? Aldon Smith had half as many sacks last season alone as Avril has had in his whole career. The Seahawks are signing him because Chris Clemons tore his ACL in the playoffs. Chris Clemons is a better player than Avril. They grossly overpaid for Harvin, both with the trade compensation and the contract they gave him. You are overreacting.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

Did I see 2 year 15 mil for Avril? Man, they’re way overpaying!

      • Steelematic says:

Nothing to do with overreacting. This is a great team that just made 2 great moves to get better. Our rivals aren’t up n comers they are legit n getting better. So tell me what was the overreaction

    • tkamB says:

Avril was pretty bad last year, he could get back to where he was a couple years ago but Anthony Davis owns him anyway

    • claude balls says:

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

I think you need to resign yourself to the fact that the Baalke isn’t going to snatch up all the shiny objects that get your attention. It isn’t the way he builds a team. More importantly, it isn’t the way that winning teams are built. Perhaps you’d prefer to root for the Redskins. The Browns and the Dolphins are spending lots of money right now. Maybe one of those teams is for you.

  12. BigP says:

Louis Delmas to visit the Niners. I’m just not excited about a guy that has missed a quarter of his career because of injury and has a bum knee.

  13. RonnielottasSBsinSF says:

I would like to see John Abraham in a niners uniform, or someone with a pass rush that gives us depth. Really could use some type of difference maker rushing since when Justin went down our D went down with it. But solid move with Dorsey.

  14. Msclemons67 says:

Apparently Charles Woodson is still in the building. That’s either a sign that both parties are interested or his afternoon nap ran long.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Or both parties are partying! Skoal!

    • tkamB says:

      Hopefully the second part

    • claude balls says:

He’s getting the battery in his pacemaker re-charged.

    • BigP says:

He got a third degree burn from CK walking past him in the hallway.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Charles Woodson: “So are you going to sign me?’
Trent Baalke: “We’ll call and let you know.”
Woodson: “C’mon. How many chances do you think you will have
at getting a Heisman winner on defense?”
Baalke: “How long ago was that? Anyways we’ll call and let you
      know.”
Woodson: “What do those other guys have that I don’t?”
      Baalke: “Youth.”
Woodson: “Oh that’s cold man. But I can overlook it if you let me
      sign a contract right now.”
Baalke: “I told you that we would call and let you know.”
Woodson: “…….so you gonna sign me now?”
      Baalke: “SECURITY!”

  15. Jack Hammer says:

    Landry to Indy…

  16. drty49 says:

I heard all the wailing when we dumped starters in J Harbaugh’s first year, look at the progress.I am confident our FO will do what’s right.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

I was one of the whiners the first or second day that 1st year. Now I wait and see.

      • Msclemons67 says:

I *hated* their first draft. Absolutely hated it. Aldon, Kaep, Cully, Hunter – what a bunch of bums. *cough cough*

Snide jokes about the headline “49ers sign Person” seemed to be a common reaction to the 49ers lack of activity in free agency as well.

  17. RonnielottasSBsinSF says:

Grant you might want to check out Kevin Lynch’s post before you say Woodson hasnt been seen in Santa Clara. Apparently been there all day and is still there. Hope they can work out a cheap deal, as he’s an upgrade to goldson’s cover/int skills at least

  18. Mood_Indigo says:

Sando has written a thoughtful article on Dorsey with the Niners. His comment on why the Pats are moving away from the 3-4 is insightful. I had the same thought as him in reading between the lines in Baalke’s comment in defensive rotation (or lack thereof). I have a feeling that some defensive scheme changes, a little more than mere minor changes to accommodate new personnel, are in the offing this off-season.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/94000/glenn-dorsey-and-3-4-questions-for-49ers

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Thanks, Mood. I like Sando, and that’s one of his better ones. Much food for thought.

    • George says:

In my opinion, everyone who follows this blog should read this. Great article!

    • Msclemons67 says:

Sando is one of the best in the business right now. I’ve asked before and I’ll ask again – how long until he gets scooped up by a good sports news organization?

      • George says:

Maybe he justs like living in the Pacific Northwest and would have to relocate? Dunno.

      • George says:

But I agree with you that he is a great analyst, and I have come to think his is the best read I know. His piece posted above took a lot of thought and pulled a lot of things together. Earlier in the day, he said he would have something on the Dorsey signing “in a bit.” It took him a while to get it down on paper. He could have skimped to get something up sooner, but he didn’t.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

“Again, I don’t think the 49ers are suddenly going to unveil a 4-3 base defense. But they do have flexibility with their personnel. They could be headed in that direction. As Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. noted when I reached out to him Wednesday, Smith was a 4-3 defensive end coming out of college. Ray McDonald was seen as an up-the-field lineman. The fact that Smith and McDonald have flourished in a 3-4 reflects well on them and on defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. There’s precedent for Dorsey to make a transition, too. ”
“I could see McDonald as a three-technique type and maybe Dorsey as one-technique,” Williamson said. “Ahmad Brooks could project as a ‘SAM’ linebacker pretty easily and Bowman would be great as the ‘WILL’. Justin Smith could be a strong-side end, Aldon Smith could play the weak side. They do have the personnel.”

I once alluded to the possibility of the team switching to a 4-3, I wish I could find it because I described this exact set up as well, it would look brilliant now in retrospect ;)

      • Scooter_McG says:

I remember the post CfC. I think I said at the time Brooks wouldn’t transition to OLB in a 4-3 – clearly Williamson disagrees. I will say the 49ers do now have a lot of versatility in their front 7.

      • Steelmatic says:

You know in a 4-3 aldon could move back to end and smith n dorsey and ray rotate at tackle. But judging by that article bowman would b middle brooks would b 1 outside n aldon the other. Where would Wils be? Apparently alot of guys think bowman is better than will. But i dont think so

      • claude balls says:

I believe the Williamson is suggesting that Aldon Smith would be the weak side DE, Justin Smith the strong side DE, Willis the MLB, and Bowman the weakside OLB.

      • drsgrosse says:

Maybe they’re cooking up something entirely different. I wouldn’t put that past Fangio.

      • claude balls says:

        @ drsgrosse:

I just assume that they are looking for maximum flexibility. If they find the right guy at NT (crossing fingers on Ian Williams), they should be able to play 3-4, 4-3, 4-2, 2-4, or whatever formation they think best matches up with a particular offense.

      • old coach says:

Claude i think you’re right, in fact its already what Fangio does he plays multiple defenses. Now hopefully after the draft we will have the depth to rotate the front 7. I dont see Fangio going away from the 3-4 as our first down D they stop the run to well out of their base D

  21. Jack Hammer says:

Asomugha coming in for a visit today.

Ed Reed probably will not leave Houston today without a deal.

    • claude balls says:

      Jack:

Does anyone know whether Asomugha can cover? He had two bad years in Philly, but there is a legitimate case to be made that they misused him.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Question was for Jack, but to chip in, I think yes he can cover and yes he was misused. That”s some folks take on Dorsey.
He’d need a real good interview to explain other things on tape like poor tackling and lack of enthusiasm. People like Herm Edwars and Bill Polian said there were serious commitment issues obvious on tape and that both Namdi and DRC ” chose not to participate on some plays.”

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

I’m not a fan of his, but we’ll see.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Me neither. He never was the fastest guy, now he’s 32 and he’s lost some steps. No recovery speed. If a WR beats his jam, he’s toast.

    • Razoreater says:

I also do not think he has enough left in the tank to be a cylinder in the 49er mean machine.

  22. old coach says:

I remember when Asomugha left the Raiders there were some who said if philly did’nt use him in the exact same way the raiders had he would fail, looks like they might have been correct. My question is would his skill set fit the 9ers scheme?

    • Dan says:

From my observation, the Niners typically play press man, which is suited to his skills. My question is what is the worth of signing him? If he has lost step and gets beat deep he isn’t an upgrade over Culliver. If he’s too slow for the slot he isn’t an upgrade over Rogers. No matter what way you slice it he’s not replacing T Brown. So is he going to compete with Cox and Brock for the #4 guy? That wouldn’t make sense to me. I am confused by the interest.

      • Grant Cohn says:

This is all a prelude to the 49ers trading up for Xavier Rhodes, clearly.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

On Rhodes I see that most of the Mock Drafts I read are showing him picked at 12 or 13. (One had him at #9, and then 3 of 15 I checked had him falling out of the first round w/o explanation). Depends how smitten Trent is if he’d still want to trade up that far.

      • Razoreater says:

I highly doubt Baalke trades up unless he is enamoured with a player he believes the need to jump a couple teams to secure. Odds are he trades out for a 1st Round pick next year.

  23. Brotha Tuna says:

Looking at some recaps I’m head scratching on the Pats. I don’t know what the numbers were between the team and Welker’s agent, but he leaves and signs for $12Mil/2 years. So Pats sign Amendola for $31Mil/5 years. WTH?
Why not keep the guy Brady knows?
Mangini was saying the Pats just don’t come off their number. Some teams wiggle when they get close, but EM says not the Pats.
In the end it will probably be ok for Welker-Manning-Broncos and for Danny-Tom-Pats.

    • Dan says:

I saw on ESPN night that the Pats offered 2yrs, 10mil. After reducing his salary, Brady can’t be happy to see Welker leave over $2mil. You are right, it’s a real head scratcher.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Maybe the Pat’s were tired of dealing with Welkers wife and her post game comments.

      • BOS9er says:

BB and Welker had a falling out and for the first time in his tenure BB might of gotten personal over best for team. BB was pissed that WW signed the franchise tender last year and tried to phase him out in the first 2 games (vs tenesee 4 targets) but then Hernandez got hurt and edelman underperformed and wes started beasting again saying after one game “its nice to stick it in belichicks face”

Welker obviously overestimated his value on the market because he turned down a 2 yr 16 mil offer from the pats earlier last year. so he lost out on 4 mil and a chance to finish with brady.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ BOS
Thanks for the info and insight. A bit of acrimony on both sides. The quick signing of Amendola seems to support your take that Edelman underwhelmed.

      • BOS9er says:

Its hilarious, people here are loosing their mind over this. its great to have amendola out of our division, but id be surprised if he approached WW production or even played the whole 16 games.

I still think edelman comes back to NE for cheap money

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

Politically, she was wrong to get involved, but what did Welker’s wife say that isn’t true? Ray Lewis is a scumbag.

  24. Mr. Everything says:

Cutting Carlos Rogers would save the Niners $4-5M if he’s cut before April 1, but designated for June 1.

    http://www.ninersnation.com/2013/2/7/3964820/49ers-salary-cap-casualties-carlos-rogers-cut-candidate

    • claude balls says:

Don’t you think it is a bad idea to shift dead money to next year when the 49ers have to think about writing new contracts for Kaepernick, Aldon Smith and Justin Smith?

      I do.

      • Mr. Everything says:

Is that what you understand that article to say? I don’t. It saves the team $$$ this year and next year, “dead money” be damned. Show me where you read otherwise.

      • claude balls says:

If the team is going to cut him this year, I think it would be smarter to let all of the dead money count against the 2013 cap. That way, there wouldn’t be anything to count against the 2014 cap.

      • Mr. Everything says:

Claude, I get what you’re saying, but where are you getting this dead money concept from? Spotrac says $6M or so, but Rogers’ entire signing bonus was only $5M, $1.5 of which he received in 2012, so only $3.5 remains. This unpaid amount of his signing bonus would be the dead money owed to him. Since his 2013 $7.3M cap figure is not guaranteed, if the Niners paid him the $3.5M to scram in 2013, they would save around $4M.

      • claude balls says:

E, I would be careful using spotrac’s numbers. They are often inaccurate. For example, Rogers received a $5 million signing bonus in 2012 on a 4 year deal. Under the salary cap rules, only $1.25 million of the bonus (5/4) counted against the 2012 salary cap. The remaining 3.75 million is to be apportioned equally against the 2013, 2014, and 2015 caps in equal $1.25 million amounts. I am not sure where spotrac comes up with the $1.475 million signing bonus figure, but I suspect they are combining the signing bonus with Rogers’ workout and roster bonuses. But those bonuses shouldn’t be designated as part of the signing bonus and aren’t treated as such under the cap.

Anyway, because Rogers received the full signing bonus in 2012, but only $1.25 million of it counted against the 49ers’ 2012 salary cap, the remaining $3.75 million still has to be apportioned to the 49ers’ salary cap. As noted, if he plays out the contract, it will be apportioned in 3 equal $1.25 million hits.

If the 49ers cut him today, however, the unapportioned portion of the signing bonus becomes dead money ($ counting against the salary cap for players no longer on the team) and must be accounted for on the 49ers’ salary cap. If they don’t designate the release as a post June 1 cut, then the full $3.75 million counts against the 2013 cap (along with the guaranteed portion of Rogers’ 2013 salary. If they designate the move as a post June 1 cut, then the $3.75 million is apportioned between the 2013 and 2014 caps. I believe it is $1.25 million this year (this year’s portion) and $2.5 million next year (the remaining unallocated portions), but I may be thinking of the rules under the prior CBA. The current CBA may allow them to divide it up differently.

        Still awake?

      • BOS9er says:

        CB
Excellent breakdown of the cap implications as always. If we are inclined to cut him id rather do it this year and be done with it. However right now we dont have a better option to replace him with so im not sure releasing him would be all that wise

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Claude

Right, it is a soporific topic, I agree. And it appears we’re also in agreement as to the $3.5-3.75 figure. So to say that cutting Rogers would cost too much (not that you said that; again, all Jack Hammer’s false spew), or rather only save $1.1M, is pure fiction. I’d much rather see him cut this year, instead of paying him $7M to play a mediocre brand of ball. Zzzzzzzz…

  25. Razoreater says:

ASOMUGAH, you’ve got ‘splaining to do.

  26. Jobiwon says:

Asomugha will sign today and probably Delmas too. I do wonder about getting Rhodes though instead. I bet Abraham signs soon. RJF will sign with Indy and that will still leave us with two comp picks next year. We went with veterans for WR and CB not the draft. I wonder if Rogers will flip to the right side and Brown to the nickel.
Look for another DE, TE, S, and DT at the top of the draft. The safety, hopefully Phillip Thomas, will play for Delmas if he gets hurt and for Whitner on third downs.

  27. Justin says:

Jobiwon do you think Rhodes is better than Delmas? Also what is the deal with Phillip Thomas? Do you mean the practice squad player from Stanford Michael Thomas? What makes you think we are going to sign Abraham? You seem like you know your stuff which is why I am asking so many questions.

  28. Dee Phiant says:

    Seattle picked up Cliff Avril.
9′s are going to need more weapons…………….

  29. Jobiwon says:

Thanks, I liked Delmas coming out of college. He’s just had trouble staying healthy and that’s a risk. He may do better playing on grass. Rhodes was a decent vet player that could be a stop gap until a rookie was ready. He’s younger than Reed and Woodson. Phillip Thomas is a S from Fresno St that is available in the draft. I do like Michael Thomas and I think he’ll be a backup S this year for us and on special teams. Abraham visited us and Seattle and they just signed a DE. There was a rumor he picked us last week but was waiting to see if he could get more money.

  30. Brotha Tuna says:

Here I go off topic with another silly digression from serious football talk; proceed at your own risk:
Pro Football Talk reports that KC cut Cassell. This means to me that Alex passed his physical and the SF->KC deal is done. I had to wait; didn’t want to jinx anything by speaking prematurely.
One more obstacle to the Lombardi Trophy has been eliminated. No, not Alex (I’ve never been a hater), but The Curse On Alex is what’s gone.
A friend of mine’s daughter went to Helix High with Reggie Bush and Alex. In typical HS social nonsense she liked Reg but thought AS was stuck-up; just HS stuff. So when he signed with SF and got his Big Money she was all: “Pffft! Alright for you FortyNiners! I’m rooting against you now!”
She was a college kid from San Diego, shouldn’t mean diddly, but I got a chill while I laughed cuz I’m superstitious and don’t like any bad juju. OK, we saw what happened! Now Alex is gone and the spell can be broken.
I e-mailed her to tell her that and asked her to have mercy on AS and not put a spell on the Chiefs. She e-mailed back that now that she’s out of Law School she might use that black magic in her court cases.
Sorry if I wasted your time, but what’s ESPN got? Hoops? Yawn.

I enjoy a solid superstition story. It’s in full effect during football season in my house beginning with only shaving the morning of game days. The wife is not a fan but I’ve explained to her that I’ve loved the Niners longer than I’ve loved her. She is quite tolerant.

Made me laugh. Did you see DeNiro in Silver Linings Playbook? Worth it.

      • Sean in Canada says:

I haven’t seen it, Brotha. My wife and I have very different tastes in movies so it’s tough to pick one we agree on. I hear it’s very good though.

        @ Sean
Its about people being “different” and a bit about how everybody is a little different. DeNiro’s character is peripheral, but he’s this delightfully nutty and superstitious Eagles fan. Something of a chick flick but I like Outliers myself (can you tell?) so it was ok. The football fan content was a pleasant surprise for me.

So the football content may keep me awake while also being a movie my wife would watch. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll mention it to my better half.
