Free agency 2013 live blog: Day 2

This is the live blog for Day 2 of free agency. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

9:03 Here’s a quiz contest to start the day. Do you think the 49ers will sign someone today, and if so, whom? Do you think one of the 49ers’ free agents will sign elsewhere today? If so, whom?

Here’s my best guess. Ricky Jean Francois will sign with the Eagles and the Niners will sign former Giants’ kicker Lawrence Tynes.

9:34 The Chiefs just signed a deep threat for Alex Smith – wide receiver Donnie Avery. Whether Smith can take advantage of the deep threat is another story.

9:42 Josh Norris’ newest mock draft at NFL.com has the 49ers drafting Jesse Williams at No.31, and the Jets drafting Xavier Rhodes at No.9

10:02 Tyrann Mathieu tells TMZ he wants to be a 49er.

10:12 Alabama DT Jesse Williams, who weights 320 pounds, just ran a 4.9 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.

10:26 Matt Barrows just tweeted Dorsey is meeting with defensive line coach Jim Tomsula right now, and Charles Woodson also is in the 49ers’ facility.

10:37 The Lions signed Reggie Bush to a four-year contract. NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah loves the move: “In 2011, the Lions started off the season 5-0 with Jahvid Best in the lineup. Reggie Bush will fill that role.”

10:45 The Cardinals just signed Rashard Mendenhall. They’re bending over backwards to build Steelers-West in Arizona.

11:25 CB Antoine Cason is meeting with the Cardinals. They need a No.2 cornerback, and Cason is a good one.

11:33 The Lions just signed safety Glover Quin, according to Schefter.

11:50 The Broncos are trying to sign Wes Welker. They’re in serious talks.

12:06 The Bucs just signed Dashon Goldson to a five-year contract. It’s worth $41.25 million, and $22 million is guaranteed.

12:07 Something to consider – with the addition of Boldin and the loss of Walker, what will be the 49ers’ most dangerous offensive personnel grouping next season? The last two seasons, it was 22 personnel – two tight ends and two running backs. It was a power running formation that also could beat you deep with the pass because there were two fast tight ends.

Next season, the 49ers’ best grouping could be 11 personnel – one tight end, one running back and three wide receivers – because Boldin is best when he lines up in the slot. With him at the X and Crabtree at the Z in 21 personnel – two running backs and one tight end – the only deep threat on the field would be Vernon Davis, so safeties could play closer to the line of scrimmage, which would hurt the 49ers’ running game.

12:15 With the 31st and 34th pick, the 49ers probably could draft FS Eric Reid and SS Jonathan Cyprien if they wanted to.

12:20 The 49ers have signed Glenn Dorsey, according to Schefter. I guess Dorsey bought into the idea of playing nose tackle.

12:52 The Dolphins are close to signing TE Dustin Keller. He’s taking a physical.

4:41 The Broncos signed Wes Welker to a two-year, $12 million deal, so the Patriots signed Danny Amendola to a five-year $31 million contract.

6:49 Former Lions’ free safety had a visit with the Rams earlier today. He just left St. Louis and is on the way to visit the 49ers, according to Adam Schefter. Maybe that indicates the 49ers passed on Charles Woodson.

7:05 Draft talk: Miami Herald Columnist Armando Salguero thinks the Dolphins will draft CB Xavier Rhodes at pick No.12. If this is true, the 49ers probably would have to trade with the Chargers for pick No.11 to get Rhodes, if he’s the guy Trent Baalke wants.

  1. Grimey9er says:

Goldson will sign with the Bucs.

  2. Ray says:

Glenn Dorsey signs with the Niners today.

    • Yosemite Sam says:

Why Dorsey? Sure, he is better than Ian Williams, but I question whether he is as good as Sopoaga. Maybe he agrees to play for less than Sopoaga. So, better for the salary cap but worse on the field. Not sure I am content with that trade off…

      • Pete says:

You’ve seen Williams play? You know how good he is after playing 20 plays in the NFL? Really?

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Gorsey and Williams would play different positions. Williams will most often be lined up at the nose tackle and Dorsey would be an end.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        oops, Dorsey

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Dorsey strikes me as a nose, maybe a three-tech, not a five-tech.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

I figured with the Williams signing and how often they actually use a NT that they would use Dorsey for the end. If you have the NT lined straight up you can still but Dorsey in the 3 tech as the end.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        put

      • rocket says:

He would probably be used the same way RJF was I would guess. He seems to be best as a run stuffer and made quite a few tackles for a 3-4 DE in KC.

Tynes would be interesting but I wonder if they really want to spend 3+ mill on a kicker again? They may have no choice.

I thought Goldson would have signed with the Bucs yesterday but he hasn’t so I wonder if he’s having second thoughts?

RJF probably signs with the Eagles today to join Sopo and the Niners keep counting those 2014 compensatory draft picks.

      • Jack Hammer says:

This is a repost on how I think they may use Dorsey if signed.

Glenn Dorsey was at his best at LSU playing inside in a 4-3, but struggled with the transition to NT in the 3-4.

Maybe they bring him in to give J Smith and McDonald a breather in the Nickle/Dime packages?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

For a guy who is consistently mentioned as a great run stuffer and not so much as a pass rusher why would we use him on nickle/dime? Wouldn’t he be in during base to help stop the run?

As a DE I think he needs a DT/NT inside of him to help free him up. In nickle on a two man line I think he would really struggle. When we’re in nickle how frequently is it as a 4 man vs a 2 man line?

      • Yosemite Sam says:

And THAT is why Dorsey doesn’t make any sense. Dorsey isn’t good enough to take snaps away from Smith or McDonald at end. His only opportunity for significant playing time will be at NT ahead of Ian, and a handful of snaps from McDonald at 3T when Brooks and Aldon are ends…ie., passing downs, and Dorsey won’t be getting pressure. Hence the reason he doesn’t make sense.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Dorsey is a fine pick up. I’m not sure if he’ll play much at NT, the Chiefs used him as a DE in their 3-4 and I think that’s where he’ll play for the 49ers, moving inside in a 4-man front. Fangio will have no excuse for not rotating Smith and McDonald.

Yes, Dorsey won’t be a dominant pass rushing force in and of himself, but he will keep blockers off the LBs which is the strength of this team. Throughout his career, both at LSU and the Chiefs, he has commanded double and even triple teams. He will make the LBs better.

    • Ray says:

      Grant,

What did I win????? Do you need my address to send me my prize??

    • Ray says:

Hey Grant: What did I win??

  3. Larry says:

Tynes is exciting. I would love to see him as 49er. This just makes since. I never was big on a kicker in the draft.

  4. Coffee's for closers says:

    I’ll repost this here;

    Coffee’s for closers says:
    March 13, 2013 at 9:10 am
    Today:
    49ers sign: Dorsey
    ex49ers: Goldson TB

    Tomorrow:
    ex49ers: RJF Clev

    Friday:
    49ers: A. Wilson S / L. Tynes K

These aren’t necessarily moves I want us to make but are ones that I see as possible.

  5. Steelematic says:

The niners suprise ppl and pick up Leon Washington. We loose RJF to the Cincinnati Bengals who put him at tackle at his natural 4-3 spot.

  6. Steelematic says:

Just saw manny lawson signed in buff.. manny was cool here for a couple of years but like most hot heads he believed he was better than he actually is

  7. Alan M says:

Laurent Robinson was let go by the Jags. Can he stretch the field? Two years ago with the Cowboys, he was great. Maybe he wasn’t last year because the Jags have no QB.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Think this one through first, the Jags are cutting him after one year of a 5 year 32 million dollar deal. Any red flags there ya think?

He’s got concussion issues and might be done in the NFL.

    • Grant Cohn says:

He was concussed four times in 2012.

  8. Big niner says:

    Out RJF to cleveland
    Out Grant to cleveland
    out goldson to tampa
    In woodson
    In nhamdi
    In Dorsey

  9. Coffee's for closers says:

    BOOOOO

The Chiefs grabbed one of my FA wish list guys: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/13/chiefs-adding-donnie-avery/

  10. MidWestNiner says:

Kenny Phillips and Brent Grimes to one year deals. Glenn Dorsey to a two year deal.

    RJF to the Eagles.
    Goldson to the Bucs.
    Larry Grant to the Ravens.
    Ginn unemployed.

Carlos Rogers and Parys Haralson cut or traded.

    • Steelematic says:

I dont think anyonw would trade for rodgers. To expensive and not worth the big contract. We got burned by him. Year 1 to year 2 was ridiculous. He got us good. Its also a reason i think we sign vets to 1 year deals who think they have something to prove. Because when they get the money they decline

    • pete says:

Grant would be a loss, but I could definitely see him going to the Ravens. Especially after losing Ellerbe. I’ll be Ginn will get offered a return job. Only way he is unemployed is if he gets stubborn. How much do Rogers and Haralson count against the cap this year?

      • Mesacoug says:

Rogers would be a huge cap hit. We just need to face it the niners are stuck with him for now.

  11. Mr. Everything says:
  12. Steelematic says:

Cwoodson asks for to mucch money so we let him leave town.. Suprise signing, Niners sign Ed reed…

    • Steelematic says:

And now that thats out the way, i dont think we sign anyone til sunday. Maybe a suprise release or two. But no signing till sunday

  13. Razoreater says:

Glover Quinn could be acquired for 5 million per year and step right in for Goldson who will sign with the enamored Buccaneers.

Josh Johnson could eventually be signed…

Dawson the kicker would be my pick, but are they considering taking their kicker of the future in this years draft? Would save them money and with Kaepurnicus, they may feel the importance of the kicker has now been diminished.

  14. old coach says:

I read something yesterday that said a source inside the 49ers think Dorsey has been misused with the Chiefs and the 49ers see him more in the J. Smith mold

    • Coffee's for closers says:

This guy is apparently the Alex Smith of defensive tackles because I’ve never heard more excuses about why a guy has struggled. ;)

      • rocket says:

        cfc,

He actually graded out pretty well in 2010 and 11 according to PFF. He is very strong and while not the pass rusher Cowboy is, he can occupy two blockers to free people up. I’m not sure how good he can be, but I trust the guys making the decisions to decide if he is a buy low candidate who could pay off in a big way.

    • Big niner says:

Tomsula and the niner defense surrounding him will have him ticking.

    • Jack Hammer says:

That’s what I’m thinking too Coach.

    • MidWestNiner says:

      I concur.

    • George says:

If they make him an offer, that suggests what you say, OC. The fact they invited him to Santa Clara means they see a productive use for him, whether at end or nose tackle. Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall in Tomsula’s office now?

  15. ninermd says:

49ers shock everybody and trade for revis today. It’s just a guess folks! So calm down if you’re ready to refute.

    • Big niner says:

I wish…..but no money for that.

      • Steelematic says:

Its about this year… he only makes 6 mil… hello ppl. 6 mil. He cant hold out because its in his contract that if he does something fishy happens. (Dont know the exact wording) But if its our one and next years 2. Id do it for 1 year. Especially if he passes a physical and is deemed healthy. But im assuming the jets want way more, way more than we would pay. I wouldnt morgatage futures for 1 year. I wouldnt drop 3 to 4 early picks for 1 year. Thats what the jets want i think

    • Steelematic says:

Lol.. i wish. Revis is going to bucs, apparently im guessing they give up 3 ones and a 2 to overpay for him.

      • pete says:

I would lose all respect for their organization if they did that. I feel that they’ve done a pretty good job building a dangerous team, and I doubt they would destroy their draft for that. I don’t think any player is worth 3 1st rounders and a 2nd.

      • Steelematic says:

Pete… i agree unless it was a 28 year old named Michael Jordan

      • pete says:

In that case, sounds like a quarterback. A 28 year old Peyton Manning or something like that. I can’t see a corner making that much of a difference though. I feel a solid pair of corners would do better than 1 great one. Otherwise teams could pick on the weakside, no?

      • Steelematic says:

        Absolutely young man, Absolutely

  16. Steelematic says:

Goldson ends up in philly with tom gamble… he knows dashon and has a little money to spend. Perfect fit for a needy defense

  17. Razoreater says:

According to Rotoworld Landry is penciled in for an interview Thusday at 4949 Centennial Blvd. Not sure what’s in mind here….unless they want to release the Whitner and slide in LaRon.

  18. paulbleedsblue says:

    Dorsey! Dorsey!

Certainly didn’t live up to being the 5th pick of the draft — but give JH and Tomsula a talent, and maybe he reaches his potential.

COMBINED TACKLES: 2009-2011 (Dorsey missed most of 2012)

    I. Sopoaga – 85
    G. Dorsey – 185

    • Grant Cohn says:

Dorsey has four sacks in his entire pro career, hasn’t had a sack since 2010.
In 20ll, while he played the run well, he had 0 sacks, 2 QB hits and 2 QB hurries in 640 snaps according to PFT.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

I’m not a fan of the signing but do you think he’s viable as a run down support type guy or essentially RJF v 2.0?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Dorsey’s a good run defender, so sure, but the 49ers shouldn’t pay him a lot. I don’t see him as the heir apparent to Justin Smith.

      • claude balls says:

Was going after the QB part of his assignment in KC’s defense?

      • Grant Cohn says:

He was a two-gapping five-tech, like Justin Smith and Ray McDonald. Those two can two-gap and bull rush their way into the pocket from the five-tech position to pressure the QB. Dorsey hasn’t shown the ability to do that.

      • claude balls says:

        Thanks for the information Grant.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        You’re killing me Grant.

      • Grant Cohn says:

How would you break down Dorsey?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Could Dorsey possibly be someone that Tomsula likes as a player?

      • Allan says:

        Grant,

He doesn’t need to be Justin Smith heir.
That we can find in the draft.

He just needs to replace RJF production at a lower cost. And that seens plausable.

      • Grant Cohn says:

If Dorsey is cheap, why not? I’m with you.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I haven’t paid any attention to KC to be honest. He was at his best playing inside in the 4-3 at LSU, and think that may be what the staff is looking at him for.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I think you’re right. He got 7 sacks as a junior three-tech at LSU, but that was his only productive year as a pass rusher in college or the NFL.

      • BigP says:

        Grant,
How realistic is it to expect a direct/eventual replacement for Justin Smith? I worry about replacing him more than any other player, but I also see that as a very difficult thing to do. He has the perfect build for what he does, he is in the perfect defense for what he excels at and he has the desire that very few players have. He was actually a much better player after he got his big contract. I worry that Aldon Smith was correct when he said Smith was “the last true American badass.”

      • Scooter_McG says:

With Glenn Dorsey playing RDE, Tamba Hali (ROLB) went from 8.5 sacks in 2009, to 12 sacks in 2010, to 14.5 sacks in 2011.

In 2008 he had 3 sacks with the Chiefs playing a 4-3. In 2012 without Glenn Dorsey for most of the season he had 9 sacks.

His best production has come with Glenn Dorsey playing inside him at the RDE position.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Interesting. Thank you.

      • claude balls says:

        Scooter:

Good find. It took some insight/deep thought to examine Dorsey’s impact on Hali’s performance. I’m impressed.

  19. MidWestNiner says:

Thanks for wiping mine and Everything’s back and forth Grant. Sometimes I get carried away but I’m working on trying to avoid it.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Just ignore it’s nonsense MidWest.

    • rocket says:

      Mid,

Porkbuneverything has a case of forum Tourette’s Syndrome. Can’t help himself. Just posts whatever pops into his head. Best to just drive on bye.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone. Lord knows I’ve painted the walls a few times with my tirades and pointless arguments. Mr.E when he’s composed is a smart individual with interesting points to add. We all have our bad days, weeks, months what have you. I’ve been making a concerted effort to behave myself and I think he will see the err of his ways as well and will return to us clear headed at some point.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        CFC

Your words speak to the core, my dude! I’m in Aspen, being overly aggressive on the mountain, so I think I might be a little “high-T” right now.

Thanks for the reach, CFC. Twill not be soon forgotten.

  20. MidWestNiner says:

I like the idea of Mathieu being a Niner. The thought of him popping Harvin is absolutely delicious.

  21. Coffee's for closers says:

Briefly off topic here but as far as TV programming goes Im about to go nuts waiting for March 31st and April 7th to get here. Ermahgerd!

  22. Coffee's for closers says:

Fairly quiet day #2 so far. Bush going to the Lions is one of the bigger headlines even if it’s not a surprise. I’d say you could probably set an egg timer on how long it will take the Bills to sign Willie Colon today.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

If the Rams lose Amendola look for them to make a move for Welker?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Or the Broncos could sign Welker.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The Rams could potentially also trade for Victor Cruz.

      • Grant Cohn says:

The Rams should draft the best flanker/slot receiver available – Keenan Allen or DeAndre Hopkins. Quick and Givens can stretch the field.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

It would certainly give them something they don’t seem to have. Aside from Trindon Holiday all of their receivers are fairly tall and look to be built more about speed then as possession receivers.

He’d probably catch a few passes in that thin air as long as he and Manning can stay healthy. I might have to pick him up on one of my leagues again too.

      • Grimey9er says:

The rams don’t have to trade for Cruz he is a restricted free agent. they just have to make an offer the Giants won’t match.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I think you will see Cook running many of the routes Amendola ran.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I agree. The Rams still need a No.1 receiver they can play at the Z.

      • MidWestNiner says:

True Grant, but the team could sign Cruz in order to keep up with the Niners and Seahawks.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Allen or Hopkins would be younger and cheaper. Better to build through the draft, right?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Don’t get me wrong Grant. I’d rather build through the draft, but the Rams could feel like they are forced to make this move in order to stay relevant if they whiff on both Amendola and Welker.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I think Allen or Hopkins would make them relevant. I really like those two. Allen reminds me of Crabtree but bigger and Hopkins reminds me of Roddy White.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I agree again Grant, but the question is how desperate will the Rams be. That could be what tips the scale.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I see what you’re saying. Very good point. I’m just thinking the Rams have so much money tied up in Bradford, they may want to have a No.1 receiver on a rookie contract.

  23. Sean in Canada says:

Depending on the cost could the Niners use Woodson or Reed as a one or two year bridge and draft a safety? Although I can’t see Reed leaving Baltimore considering the drastic changes that D is going through right now.

  24. Spaceborn says:

I have a feeling the 49ers aren’t going to sign any FA’s today. I think the trend of bringing them in for visits will continue thru the week, while getting an idea of how they would fit the team and an idea of what kind of money they will command. Too much is still going on this early in the game with teams adding and subtracting players. 49ers aren’t going to eat up that cap space they just gained right away. And if they do sign a player this week, it would more likely for a back-up/ST type player or re-signing a player like Gooden.

RJF could be signing with the Eagles today, but I’m beginning to wonder if having already signed Sopoaga may be causing some delay in getting a deal done. Regardless, RJF will be signing with another team. Goldson could sign today as well, but I have a feeling he hasn’t been offered the 8 million a year he desires or the deal would have been done by now.

I really think the 49ers are going to work the draft this season in an effort to
keep the cap in control to have the money for signings we all know are going to need to be done next season.

    • NYniner says:

What has RJF ever done too attract any type of attention whatsoever

      • Spaceborn says:

NY, teams switching to a 3-4 defense like the Eagles may look at him as a player that fits the new system better than players already on the team. It doesn’t mean they value him as a future star, just somebody that could be solid during the transition.

  25. MidWestNiner says:

How many QB pressures has Dorsey had during those four years Grant?

    • Grant Cohn says:

47 hits and hurries in four years. 1 QB hit and 16 hurries in 2009. 7 hits and 19 hurries in 2010.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Low numbers, but at the same time would fit our team’s motto of stats not mattering just as long as you get the job done.

      • Spaceborn says:

I think Dorsey as a former high draft pick, is going to be one of those first-time FA’s that despite lack of production, still see themselves as retaining that high-pick value and is going to want to get paid like one. It takes a couple of one-year deals bouncing from different teams before you get these type of players “cheap.”

  26. MidWestNiner says:

Apparently Reggie Bush is jealous of Jahvid Best’s time in Detroit and wants to get injured behind that OL as well.

  27. Forever Faithful says:

Bernard Pollard, SS Ravens, bids farewell to the Ravens.
What do you think about him, fellas?

  28. pete says:

Link to the Cap hits for 2013

    http://www.ninersnation.com/pages/49ers-salary-cap-2013

Carlos Rogers gets paid 7.3 mil??? hmmmm…..

  29. pete says:

Mendenhall to Cards for 1 year.

  30. Wilson says:

I don’t know who it will be but the 49ers will sign a safety free agent, because Whitner (and to a lesser extent, Goldson) was exposed in the Super Bowl, and with Goldson asking too much, they have to be looking at replacing both safeties as starters. So sign a free agent, and draft one or more safeties.

  31. Coffee's for closers says:

Williams is a day #1 pick for sure. Look at the teams moving to a 3-4 that don’t find their NT in FA as possible landing spots for him.

  32. Crab15 says:

So LaRon Landry is coming tomorrow if he doesn’t sign with Colts today. That would be sick if we got Landry, hope we can afford him.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Six picks in six NFL seasons. He’s a strong safety.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        bye bye Whitner? even better.

      • pete says:

Landry was playing through injuries in some of those seasons… not making excuses, but it’s a factor to consider. If he can stay healthy, might have potential. Landry over Whitner? Hmm…

      • pete says:

I think I stick with Whitner.. Supposedly Landry’s coverage skills aren’t anything to shake a stick at either.

      • Grimey9er says:

Actually he wasn’t playing through injury. 17 games played in 2010 and 2011 combined. Pretty much just a hitter. Like Pollard.

      • pete says:

Yeah. I’ll keep Whitner and sustain a little more loyal image. At least Whitner knocks guys out.

  33. Jobiwon says:

Ricky Jean Francois will sign with the Eagles and Glenn Dorsey signs with the Niners. There’s a good chance Woodson does also.

    • pete says:

I think RJF goes elsewhere. Eagles have Fletcher Cox from last year as well. He was their first draft choice, so I’d bet he will be learning behind Soap and rotating into the line.

  34. michael says:

Pollard is going to be released today from Ravens worth a look only 29.

  35. runman49 says:

    Ravens to release Bernard Pollard…

  36. George says:

From Barrow’s article on Dorsey visit:
“Dorsey was miscast as a defensive end in a 3-4 system with the Chiefs. It’s unknown how he feels about playing nose tackle in the 49ers’ defense.”

  37. Jack Hammer says:

    Jake Long to the Rams

  38. Coffee's for closers says:

Final thoughts for the next 5 minutes on Dorsey. I was wrong thinking the team was going to use him as and end. If we can get him on a short term deal that is low in salary but high in incentives or basically a low risk easy to cut type deal then by all means sure. If he’s willing to split reps with Williams for the 20-30 snaps that the team will actually use his position then I don’t think we have much to lose from it.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      That’s what I’m thinking.

      • Spaceborn says:

I’m thinking he re-signs with the Chiefs. But after a 5-year, 51 million dollar contract, do you think he would sign with the 49ers to be a bit player for what he would probably consider chump-change?

  39. Razoreater says:

Glover Quinn gone to the Lions den. It’s time to draft Cyprien early 2nd Round.

  40. BennyBlanco says:

Looks like Welker to Denver. I guess going from Brady to P.Manning aint all that bad

  41. Jobiwon says:

I too wonder if Landry will be signed and Whitner released.
I don’t think Dorsey will be a NT for us. He was a 2-gap DE for KC and was a good run stuffer. I thought our 3-4 DE’s one gap sometimes and we want them to have quickness to get upfield instead of just tying up the OL. That’s a fit for Dorsey. Pioli on NFL network said KC didn’t use him right and had him as a FA sleeper.

  42. Coffee's for closers says:

Grant do you get any special access at the facility to see any of the players as they come in for visits?

  43. runman49 says:

    Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter

“Hold off on Glover Quin’s agreement with Detroit. Another source said, Not so fast. Situations in free agency, as we see, can be fluid.”

  44. runman49 says:

    Goldson officially gone to TB…

  45. BennyBlanco says:

Goldson just signed with TB on 5 yr deal

  46. Coffee's for closers says:

The Catholic Church just selected their QB of the future. With the 266th selection in the Papal draft the Vatican selects…

  47. Razoreater says:

Rang, Brugler, Kirwan, Prisco all have the 49ers taking either Williams or Banks.

    • Grant Cohn says:

So that means Mr. Envelope will draft someone else, right?

      • Razoreater says:

That is one prediction I can feel very confident about making….No sealed the night before envelope with the 1st Round Draft Pick inside.

      • Grimey9er says:

Baalke throwing another curveball is pretty much a forgone conclusion. Which means when he drafts Ertz, nobody will expect it and he will have thrown us another curveball.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The ultimate curveball is Goodell saying this: With the 31st pick, the San Francisco 49ers select ILB Manti Te’o out of the University of Notre Dame.

I guarantee that no mouth would remain closed at that moment.

      • hightop says:

        that made me ill

      • MidWestNiner says:

I think it would make every single Niners fan ill hightop if it actually happened, but thankfully the chances of it happening is 1,000,000,000,000 to 1.

      • exgolfer says:

I still think Bruce Irvins was the player the 49ers really wanted last year.

    • claude balls says:

I think it’s much too soon to project draft picks. Free agency just started, and rosters will change.

    • George says:

Seattle and St. Louis are getting stronger offensively, so I think all our early picks will be on defense, with maybe the exception of running back. Our offense depends on a killer all-purpose back, and Gore could peter out this year. You never know until it’s happened.

  48. George says:

    PFT on Goldson’s deal:
Goldson’s deal will have a total value of $41.25 million with $22 million guaranteed from the Bucs.

    Nice payday for The Hawk.

  49. MidWestNiner says:

Interesting article about who received the most in pay based on performance:

  50. George says:

    Barrows today on Sean Smith:
And as far as Miami free-agent cornerback Sean Smith … The 49ers showed interest in the big (6-3, 218-pound) cornerback in the run-up to free agency, but they are not believed to be one of the teams hotly pursuing Smith now. Astute 49ers followers might recall that this is how the team approached the cornerback market in 2011: They expressed interest in several top names, waited until the market had cooled and then snagged Carlos Rogers.

    Grant

Check out the effects of having both safeties close to the LOS against Kaep in the pistol. You might reconsider your claim.

  52. George says:

PFF is publishing a deal grader again. Here’s the link:

  53. Mr. Everything says:

Hey, Dashon. How’s it feel to be a rich loser?

  54. shawnrhod says:

Whitner, C. Woodson, LeRon Landry (scheduled to visit tomorrow, per MM)

In my book, these are all strong safeties…

Where is the center fielder we need… Reed ( I hope not), Cully (he is a decent CB he should still develop there)…

  55. Jack Hammer says:

Here is a SWAG for you…They release Whitner, and sign Woodson and Landry. Woodson replaces Goldson at FS, and Landry replaces Whitner at SS.

  56. est_29Jan95 says:

What do guys think of Boldin filling in and becoming our new swiss army knife???

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Yes in the sense of multiple positions and uses but not the same multiples as DW. AB not likely a FB like Walker, but may line up there once in a while to try to get a matchup against LBs.

  57. Jdilla says:

Good for you Dashon. Way to get your money. You always set the tone for the defense in games and even inspired the offense with your play. advanced statistics and fans wants to label you as below average in coverage skills and not worth the money. Some traits aren’t found on a stat page though and you damn sure let every wide receiver know who’s house this was; yours. I wished we could have resigned you. I think our secondary will be exposed even more without you back there. Good luck hawk. One of my all time favorite 49er players ever.

    • exgolfer says:

Goldson would be an excellent SS, he’s just a good FS.

      • drsgrosse says:

Great deal for Goldson…a ton of $$$ that he’ll have time to spend Christmas shopping since he won’t have to prepare for any big December games.

  58. Razoreater says:

    PFF claims Dorsey is signed:

“Does Dorsey take those roughly 350 snaps a season that Sopoaga has vacated as a nose tackle? Does he afford depth at end to ensure that Smith and McDonald don’t have to play close 1000 snaps each as starters? Plenty of intrigue to see how the 49ers manage this one over the course of the sumer and 2013 season”.

  59. hackjammer says:

Nnamdi says possible destinations include Houston, SF, Denver, and az

  60. Jack Hammer says:

    Welled to Denver

  61. Jack Hammer says:

Drew Stanton is the new QB in Arizona with a 3 year deal.

  62. Mesacoug says:

Rogers would be a huge cap hit. We just need to face it the niners are stuck with him for now.

  63. ninermd says:

    Nnamdi Nnamdi Nnamdi!!!!! Wheeeew!

  64. Jack Hammer says:

    Hey Grant,

    Hear anything on Woodson?

  65. Brotha Tuna says:

    Shhhhhhh dude

    • exgolfer says:

      BroTuna,

You’re probably right about me being quiet, but what are your responding to / commenting on?

      • Brotha Tuna says:

It was about a comment you made on strategy, but at 11:57 I forget which one! Obviously time for me to retire. I concede. Hasta mañana.
