Free agency 2013 live blog: Day 3

This is the live blog for Day 3 of free agency. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis.

11:39 The 49ers are hosting two free agent defensive backs for visits today – free safety Louis Delmas and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Do you think the 49ers should sign either player? Why or why not?

11:40 CB Sean Smith signed with the Chiefs earlier this morning, and CB Keenan Lewis could sign with the Saints shortly, tweets Adam Schefter. If the 49ers pass on Asomugha, Antoine Cason could be the last quality CB option on the free agent market for the Niners.

12:08 The Colts just signed Ricky Jean Francois to a four-year $22 million contract. He’ll be a starter for Indy. Good for him.

12:21 The NFL just changed the tuck rule.

1:10 The Eagles just signed Kenny Phillips and Cary Williams.

1:18 The Falcons just signed RB Steven Jackson. He makes their offense much more dangerous.

3:30 The Patriots signed Leon Washington.

  1. Abbas says:

I believe Nnamdi would struggle in a zone-scheme, much to what the Niners defensive backfield plays. However if they allow him to play man to man/bump and run on opposing team’s primary reciever, similiar to what Revis does, I think he might benefit. Not sure on Antoine Cason, haven’t paid much attention to him or his playstyle.

  2. MidWestNiner says:

What is the latest news on the FS search Grant?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Delmas today. Eric Branch said the 49ers are doing a lot of background on Eric Reid. To me, Reid reminds of LaRon Landry.

      • tkamB says:

Reid showed a lot better agility than Landry at the combine though, so I think he has better upside in coverage than Landry did coming out of college.

      • AES* says:

Grant, what area in Eric Reid’ game reminded you of L.Landry?

The one thing that is prominent in Landry’ style of play is his sheer physical smash-mouth play.
Is this what you were refering too regarding Reid?

      • Grant Cohn says:

They both strike me as strong safeties.

      • rocket says:

Reid is a guy I was looking at for the Niners in the 2nd. He’d be a great pickup around there imo.

      • Scooter_McG says:

I have to disagree on Reid – he’s better in coverage than Landry. Faster and more agile

      • Grant Cohn says:

Fair enough. Thanks for your take. You’re usually right on the money.

      • BOS9er says:

        McG
Didnt landry run a sub 4.4 40 at the combine and thats why he shot up the draft boards?
By the way R u from the NE area? Scooter McGrooter?

      • dc9er says:

Eric Reid would be a good pick up

      • Scooter_McG says:

I can’t recall BOS. Landry may have straight line speed but he’s not agile and not quick. He’s a bulked up safety that can lay the wood.

Reid can also hit, but he’s more of a well rounded athlete.

      • Scooter_McG says:

BOS, just doing some quick digging and you are right – he ran 4.35s. That’s impressive speed for a safety. He also tested well in most other athletic drills too. Interestingly, coming out of college he was lauded for his ball hawking ability.

If Landry could stay healthy he’d probably be one of the top safeties in the NFL. I think Reid has similar potential, but with less bulk and better agility.

Mike ‘Scooter’ McGruder – what a legend! I loved the name, but no, don’t live in the NE area.

  3. Coffee's for closers says:

Kirwan mentioned the other day that there are nearly 50 FA CB’s on the market. I’m willing to give Baalke the benefit of the doubt that he can find another diamond in the rough like he did with Rogers a few years ago. Pay him a couple bucks and when the luster wears off find a new one.

  4. George says:

    Maiocco on Dan Skuta:
“Skuta had 15 tackles on special teams last season, according to Pro Football Focus, which ranked tied for third in the league.”

  5. BOS9er says:

Is there any word on The CB formerly known as Pac Man? He is younger than namdi and seems to be flying under the radar, i havnt heard a thing about him

  6. JD says:

Delmas would be a real solid addition, assuming he can stay healthy. He reminds me of Earl Thomas.

  7. Steelmatic says:

Nhamdi would benifit greatly from our scheme n pass rush. Look wat it did for Rodgers. Give nhamdi a 2 year deal and watch him play with a chip on his shoulder. Now it will be up to the 2 safties to keep the lid from being blown off by the likes of percy harvin n julio jones. But like i said systematically he eould shine.

    • ninermd says:

Yes he would. An he could bring the physical play back to our cb position. Is it just me or did anyone else see our secondary shut down top offenses when they played press or bump?

    • AES says:

      Steel/MD
The one thing that scares me about Nhambi was how often he was out of position and inability to quickly recover (which is a DB’ bread & butter). His once sure tackling ability seemed to decline as well.

I could understand when a player needs to take a little time assimilating himself to a new (defensive) scheme, but in Nhambi’ case his play seem to deteriorate in Philly, rather then improve after becoming more familiar with their scheme.

I’m just not sold on Nhambi. But having said that, if the 49ers sign him, I hope I’m wrong.

  8. Nick says:

Seattle just signed Cliff Avril. Their D just improved. Now they have Bruce Irvin, Chris Clemons, and Avril upfront and that’s a formidable D-line.

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9049770/cliff-avril-agrees-two-year-deal-seattle-seahawks-according-source

  9. Steelmatic says:

The saints jumping on thr nhamdi train.

  10. KJ says:

If the niners sign Nnamdi, what happens to the secondary? Does Rodgers slide to safety to move Brown or Culliver into the nickel back?

  11. runman49 says:

Didn’t Cason get torched quite a bit last year?

  12. JD says:

What’s the latest on RJF? He isn’t the classic NT we’d likely use, but he did alright with it and also played well enough spelling JSmith and RayMac. I assume we’ll only sign him on the cheap, as there are NT options in the draft

  13. old coach says:

Any news on a kicker for the 9ers

  14. hova says:

Rjf got 22 million wow glad we didnt resign him thats w lil to much for my blood

  15. George says:

Barrows has a column up about briefly speaking with Harbaugh at a brief appearance he made today at San Jose State. This is what Harbaugh said about Dorsey:
“What position will Glenn Dorsey play? Is nose tackle where you think he’ll end up?
JH: Yeah, I think the way Vic (Fangio) and Jimmy Tomsula do it, he’s the nose with Ian Williams. Then if Ian comes along, he’s going to get quite a few of those reps (at NT) and Glenn can be an end as well and take some of those snaps as well. So we have high hopes and expectations for his contribution.”

    Read more here: http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2013/03/harbaugh-talks-alex-smith-charles-woodson-and-glenn-dorsey.html#more#storylink=cpy

    • JD says:

Ian Williams, eh? Haven’t seen anything, hope he’s ready. Our #31 or #34 may end up being used on a NT

      • MidWestNiner says:

Not with the new contract for Williams and the signing of Dorsey JD. If they do draft a DT or NT it will most likely be in a late round.

  16. Razoreater says:

I don’t like the idea of getting these old guys like Woodson, Reed, Asomugha. They might have enough gas in the tank to get them to the playoffs, but that’s when the needle is gonna be on “E”. Draft your secondary of the future with all of those draft picks. Move up and get that Safety or Cornerback or Defensive End. Trust your scouts and coaches to have them ready to go.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Bingo.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Come on Grant. They may be old, but they aren’t THAT old. : )

      • Brotha Tuna says:

@ Jack. Its all in the perspective. YOU’RE old to Grant. My voice must be an ancient ghost’s to him!
As they say, if I’d known I was going to live this long I’d have taken better care of myself. Well, maybe

      • Steelmatic says:

Maybe their scouts are telling them there isn’t any good prospects that can match up with the “old guys”. Why would we wanna train ppl who arent capable of being starter caliber nfl guys. Hmmmm. Just a question n tought

      • OREGONINER says:

        Grant

You shock me! We do agree occasionally….

    • runman49 says:

I’ve always though a good team doesn’t change their draft too much because of the free agents they bring in. Draft CB, and Safety yes, but we can’t expect three rookies to start and excel as Walsh did back in ’81…that was amazing but just isn’t going to happen again. Bring in the veterans on the cheap to help shore up the secondary until whoever we draft is ready to take over…

  17. old coach says:

I do’nt like Nnamdi to stiff to old

  18. Steelmatic says:

    We just signed Nhamdi…

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      Source Steel?

    • Nick says:

      Nice. I like this move

      • hova says:

        Yes!!!!! Nanamdi

      • KJ says:

In favor of this deal. Now lets hope for Reid and Cyprien on picks 31 and 34 to fix the back half of the secondary.

      • 23jordan says:

I dont like yardbarker as a source. I hope we signed both Delmas and Nnamdi.

      • oneniner says:

The only scheme that will utilize his talents is the ponzi scheme he’s got working on baalke who believes he’s a top-tier corner.

If you watched any of the tape on him over the past two years, you’ll see it wasn’t the scheme he was playing in but how he had no first step on WR’s off the press and how horrible he was in the open field.

        This guy is a fraud.

Eagles put him in every scheme imaginable to get him to perform and he got burnt every time.

Coaching? His 2 secondary coaches were dick jouran and tod bowels. Both got hired the next year as dc’s for other teams. He cant run or tackle. Going back to the west coast is going to fix him? Yea right ….. Dude sucks!

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ 19R
But you’re in favor of Reed signing?
Anyway, I’m a little surprised on NA, but Trent’s good at surprises.

      • EB Niner says:

I think it is questionable. It’s hard to believe he would have regressed as much as he seemed to in Philly.

I think it will be up to him to decide if he gets his mojo back. That said, the thing that worries me as much as his failing cover skills was his lack of tackling.

Let’s hope he actually makes and effort to do so.

I hope they have a deal like Moss had, where they can cut him with no penalty if he doesn’t step up.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Remember Moss in Oakland? I was among those who thought the Pats were bringing in an over-the-hill psychotic malingerer. The FO must believe NA can erase that image of the last two years. If he makes any ‘business decisions’ instead of tackles here, well, he does have to share a locker room with Cowboy.

      • oneniner says:

        Reed is star…….

DG misses alot of ints…..Reed will not!!!

Reed behind willis and bowman for 2yrs is a good sell.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        19R
I agree that Reed can be in an all-time conversation. I agree he’s a great leader. I understand that his experience and instincts can make up for a lost step, I just don’t know if he can cover enough ground any more. Moss was a good mentor and a mediocre deep threat for us last year, is that what Ed would bring? If we keep Whitner?

      • ninermd says:

Onechief you also said Alex smith was a COLDBLOODED ASSASIN and better than Manning and a pro bowler.
Btw what do you think of the chiefs new signings? Looking good huh?

    • dc9er says:

      link pls :)

  19. tkamB says:

    Just saw we signed Delmas.

  20. michael says:

Wikipedia is showing him as a 49er already I just went to look his height up and it said 49ers with no # assigned. I like the sign think he is comparable to Revis without giving up the draft picks and money. Revis is probably a little better and younger but with the injury he is a mystery and he is better than what we have on the current roster.

  21. ninermd says:

YEeEESSSS!!!!! Nnamdi!!!! My free agency wishes are almost complete. Sign Woodson, draft a stud DE and safety!

  22. GoldRush says:

Where did you find the Delmas signing tkam

  23. Nick says:

    Grant,

Why aren’t the Niners pursuing pass rushing specialist DE Michael Bennett? Is it purely financial reasons?

    http://www.nfl.com/player/michaelbennett/2507617/profile

  24. Brotha Tuna says:

NA & Delmas? Pretty good day so far. I’ll trust them on NA until proven otherwise.

  25. GoldRush says:

Ok, so the delmas is close to being done and they didnt want to jumop the gun.. Or is it a completely fabricated story Grant

  26. dc9er says:

Delmas? the guy is injury prone, i’m going to assume that the niners are going to draft a safety and cornerback. my guess this is a band aide till the rookies are ready to play.

  27. GoldRush says:

The saints just signed Keenan Allen cb to a five year deal, so the nhamdi signing must be true cause they really wanted him

    • dc9er says:

uhm i think Keenan Allen is a receiver in the draft, do you mean Keenan Lewis CB from the steelers to New Orleans?

  28. Razoreater says:

So, while nothing has been announced by Delmas, 49ers or the agency that reps him … I’d be pretty surprised if Delmas doesn’t land in SF…La Confora

  29. tkamB says:

Kenny Phillips to the Eagles on a 1 year deal… wish the 49ers would have made that offer. Only really good young safety left is Delmas.

  30. Spaceborn says:

    7 mins Matt Maiocco ‏@MaioccoCSN
Sorry. Duped like everyone else. That’s not Louis Delmas’ agent. Delmas remains unsigned at this moment.

  31. GoldRush says:

Stephen Jackson just signed with the Falcons.. I for one will not miss
playing that guy twice a year

    • EB Niner says:

He will be dangerous if/when we face them in the playoffs again.

    • BOS9er says:

      amen to that, amendola neither

    • Brotha Tuna says:

That’s an upgrade for the Falcons. They had a lot of money tied up in Turner that they can apply to SJ. I respect Mr. jackson a good deal. If he makes it to the Playoffs (real good chance) he’ll go off at that opportunity.

  32. Spaceborn says:

    Also:

    2 mins Matt Maiocco ‏@MaioccoCSN
RT @joereedy #bengals had Ted Ginn Jr. and Josh Johnson in for visits. > I can vouch for reporter Joe Reedy’s authenticity

  33. GoldRush says:

I must admit I’d rather jackson in Atlanta rather then Green Bay

    • jsand3030 says:

I agree, Green Bay peeps are stupid for letting him go. They just dont value the RB position, That would have made that offense more lethal.

  34. Spaceborn says:

Grant, sounds like the “Tuck Rule” is a proposal, as are these other proposed rules:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000150828/article/nfl-proposes-to-change-tuck-rule

  35. Steelmatic says:

Our run d is great.. im not worried about any running back in the nfl. That said, could you imagine goldson getting xtra burned by julio n roddy white biting on playfakes to jackson. I wont miss him n stl but he doesnt scare me either. Teams gameplans have bn to go over the top of us because our run game is so good. Im just concerned about our secondary getting fixed

  36. GoldRush says:

Hey Grant, eventually we’re gonna have to release some guys to free up the needed cap space.. Can you speculate who that might be.. Im guessing Whitner, but what about manningham, or even possibly carlos rodgers

    • KJ says:

I dont think Rodgers is an option this year. He has like $7 Mil in dead money for this years salary cap.

  37. dc9er says:

Had a question for you guys….I was reading the other thread by Grant and dont understand things like 5 technique, 3 technique, and 2 gap. Does anyone have a link which explains what they are?

  38. Jack Hammer says:

    MidWest,

Your Woodson/Baalke dialogue from yesterday may have been closer to reality than you thought….”Agent Carl Poston on @957thegame says that he’s waiting to hear back from 49ers on what they want to do with free agent S Charles Woodson.” (From Maiocco)

  39. Rob says:

Grant Cohn’s Mock Offseason To Date –

1.) The 49ers will … create capspace to give the franchise tage to Dashon
    Goldson. (WRONG)

2.) The 49ers will trade Alex Smith to the Cleveland Browns. (WRONG)

    3.) The 49ers will offer Delanie Walker a three-year $10M contract. (WRONG)

    4.) The 49ers will offer Randy Moss a dirt-cheap one-year contract (WRONG)

Why are any of you following this guy???

    • ribico says:

Grant gets things wrong, like the rest of us. He gets things right too. Grant is more of a facilitor for the rest of the faithful to express their opinions (like yourself there, Rob). The fact he has one of the more well attended blogs shows he’s doing a lot right.

    • George says:

      Agree.

      • George says:

with ribico, that is. We follow the blog because there are good opinions expressed here, some by Grant, some by others. One should not bet on what is said. Even icons like Peter King get it wrong. GMs who are paid millions get it wrong. Just the way it is.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        George

Grant’s huge offseason Ofer is pretty pathetic, though, you must admit. But he was right that Alex sucked, correct that Justin was the most important player on the team, and his breakdown of the defense today was great. Now, if he can only learn to tune out the clueless folk posing as knowledgeable football voices (ahem, Jack), he’ll continue to grow into this position.

      • George says:

Mr. E, you’re pretty funny. Some days he’ll hit it right, and some days wrong. But you get what you pay for, right? I’m spending more time on the blog because’s it’s fun, not because I’m expecting accurate foresight from Grant or anyone else. It’s like being in the stands and high-fiving the guy next to you with the number 80 on his jersey. All it is for me.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        George

Yeah, for what this whole sham is, I mean the blog commenting and the shiite hurling, Grant is the best. He’s a little slow on the release of news, which is okay, because robots like Maiocco have that market squared. Grant could do a helluva lot more though. He comes from a great writing family and a great writing program at UCLA, and if he really put his energy into it, he could put up some top-notch content. But he’s still young, probably lacks the connections he’d need to get the best morsels, but this is the best blog around for interaction.

      • ribico says:

That Grant doesn’t engage with snide d-bags (ahem Me. E) shows his temperament is cut out for this gig.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Ribico

You finally changed your avatar! Good boy!!!

      • ribico says:

Run along Pavlov, your master’s calling you.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Pavlov was the master….just sayin

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Rib

How did that feel, boy? Did it hurt? Are you on the train to Kansas, huh boy? You’re the dog.

      • Mr. Everything says:

Oh, Jack! How nice of you to chime in!!! Have you got another brilliant gift for us from your massive insider vault of parroted, but uncited materials? How about Delmas’ signing? When will we hear about that from you again today for the second time?

Oh, and well done, qualifying your Pavlov comment with the world’s most meaningless cliché. Just saying? You don’t say! You may or may not have just said what you just said you were just saying.

        Okay, Jack. Let’s be pals.

      • ribico says:

        >>Pavlov was the master….just sayin

Jack, does your dog have a different last name than you? Just askin

      • ribico says:

        >>most meaningless cliché

I do have to say, it is quite humorous When the world’s most meaningless forum poster perks up his ears just as Pavlov predicts.

Too bad for you, MrE. No more Smith and no more AS avatar for ribico. You’ll have to get your kneejerks elsewhere.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Rib
There’s some pretty good discussion going on over on Day 4 if you want to contribute.

    • Bayareafanatic says:

Grant takes chances. I like that. It’s better than sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing.
Tell you what, Grant got the most important one right. He said CK was going to take Smith’s job last year and he did. Stating that took guts.
Grant, now that he’s gone, can you tell us what type of relationship you had with Alex if any?

      • Spaceborn says:

What I like the most about Grant is that he interacts with us in real-time. That just doesn’t happen on other blogs very often.

    • ninermd says:

Dude even I am wrong sometimes. Rarely but hey were not perfect. Take a nap . You sound grumpy My Dude!

  40. oneniner says:

    T. Ginn don’t leave!!!

  41. Rob says:

Oh and that trade that Grant predicted of Alex Smith going to the Browns?
It was for a fifth-round pick. (WRONG AGAIN)

    Give it up, Grant.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Few people on here, if any, predicted the Niners would get the compensation they did for AS. Grant did get that he would be traded correct.

    • George says:

If Grant gave it up, there would be no blog, and no one would want that.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

In fun then, what’s your prediction Nostradomus? ; >)
I thought for instance that KC was the best fit for Alex. I didn’t think I knew what was going to happen. Who does?
Perhaps you have other blog sites that would give you a better value on your time spent. Maybe some of them will enjoy your critiques and seek your advice on if and when to fold up shop. Perhaps you’ll start your own blog and become rich and famous and marry the Princess. That’ll show him.
Careful about the door as you exit.

  42. Scooter_McG says:

Did anyone watch the NFL AM interview with Tyrann Mathieu? I was starting to warm to the possibility of this guy being drafted by the 49ers, but after watching the interview all I could do was cringe…

When teams ask you why you were kicked out of school, I’m pretty sure it isn’t to hear out of your mouth it was the weed. I’m pretty sure they want to know why you were taking weed in the first place – cause, not effect. Take ownership of the problem.

When explaining why you had only 4 reps on the bench, saying you put no effort into it is probably not what teams want to hear. You had a year away from football. I think you could have found some time to put some effort into it.

When asked what would happen if the Saints drafted you, saying they would need to develop a really good program to keep you out of trouble is a massive red flag. Yes, teams need to help you, but this is on you – you have to take responsibility for staying clean. This response sounds very much like someone that isn’t confident of their ability to stay clean, and relying on others to do it for him.

Maybe I’m being way too harsh, but all those red flags I was concerned about just got a whole lot bigger following that interview.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      Scooter
I completely understand what you’re saying, and I’ve written it myself. At this moment I think a couple of alternative takes are worth considering.
The weed did it. Lame way to say it. If he’d said and meant “My weed use got me booted and kept getting me in trouble.” That would be taking responsibility.
The other statement about needing a support system may be a candid recognition of his personal challenge with substance abuse. Recognition is good and the first step. He could’ve sought professional help on his own (Who the H is his agent? Dumbass!), and he still can and seems like he needs it. Should there be a Dallas Cowboys-like PacMan/Dez Babysitter? No.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Which slot corners in this year’s draft are your favorite?

      • runman49 says:

The Honey Badger could be good slot corner and even play a little safety…might be worth a look with one of the third round picks…

      • Crab15 says:

Grant – Never a doubt in Bruin victory over ASU today :)…
You know we need Xavier Rhodes bro, he can do it all. Must trade up for this stud playmaker!
Pete Carroll gets it, physical CB’s that can jam receivers off the ball. Rhodes tackling will improve with NFL coaching.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Grant, that’s a tough call. There are a few guys I think can play the slot but not many with loads of experience there. I like Robert Alford, and I think Jamar Taylor’s physical style of play would suit the slot position well.

I was high (no pun intended) on Poyer who has experience in the slot, but I’m really concerned about his back pedal. I’m thinking he might struggle in the pros.

McFadden, Gratz and Will Davis are also interesting propositions.

    • Razoreater says:

He’s going to be bunking in Justin Smiths’ apartment underneath his house in Tahoe….no worries mate.

      • Scooter_McG says:

I appreciate a strong locker room will help, but he can’t have a minder. Any player that needs a minder is a distraction to the team, and quite frankly a bit of a joke.

      • Razoreater says:

I think our differences are perspective. I prefer to view The Cowboy as a big brother in arms if you will, not a “minder”. A “minder” is someone who is responsible for the mindee. Honey Badger is responsible for Honey Badger. I say draft him.

  43. Bayareafanatic says:

BTW, happy March 14th to you all. It’s unofficially the new male valentines day.

  44. dc9er says:

I wonder what was Harbaugh doing at San Jose State

  45. ronnielottaSBsinSF says:

If Skuta, Delmas, and Nnamdi signed it would be easy to argue we got better in all three phases even before our crazy amount of draft picks. Now fitting those guys in and signing rookies? May be too tough.

  46. George says:

Whoever they sign, it will be because they are an upgrade and they come at the right price. It’s not like what we have is chopped liver. Used to be, but not now. There is really no hole except at Goldson’s position, and I am assuming they can put Culliver or Spielman there if they need to, draft a top flight free safety, and move Culliver or Spielman back to where they were when the new guy gets acclimated. Replacing Whitner is not a priority. In my opinion, it’s fixing the pass rush, special teams, and free safety.

    • George says:

I should add running back to that. Have to have a power running game, and Gore could lose it. You won’t know it until it happens.

    • runman49 says:

I’ve heard lots of talk about improving the pass rush…how about improving the scheme?…the fact is Niners just don’t blitz that much, but I agree they need to bring someone in to rotate and a future replacement for J. Smith. However, in this league, and now with Percy Headache in Seattle, CB and the secondary in general, are always a priority to improve.

      • Crab15 says:

runman – Not blitzing got us to a first and goal to win the Super Bowl!
The other 31 teams now know we don’t blitz so Fangio will blitz more next year, he’s no dummy. How much blitzing depends on the personnel they assemble before week 1.

      • Razoreater says:

The scheme will change defensively. I think the first hint was when Fangio was caddying for Harbaugh. The second hint was when Baalke mentioned philosophical nuances to the defense.

      • runman49 says:

Okay Crab, but it didn’t win us the Super Bowl…Would Flacco have been as good under pressure? No.

But I agree with you, “How much blitzing depends on the personnel they assemble before week 1.”

      • Sean in Canada says:

Caddying for Harbaugh is the kiss of death. Fangio better not get injured or he’ll lose his job and get shipped to KC.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Sean in Canada
Kaep took that job. It wasn’t given to him because our former POS QB got a booboo. You think you’re funny. You’re not. You might try not making lame jokes at the expense of our HC and QB in favor of the KC QB.

      • Sean in Canada says:

No need to get bent out of shape, E. For someone who is constantly ragging on others around here you certainly took that little joke to heart.

      • ninermd says:

I thought Sean/Canada’ joke was funny. Now if he truly believes smith lost his job due to injury. Then you’ve got something E. otherwise I laughed.

  53. George says:

I was sorry to read about Manningham having to take a cut in pay. Surprised too. I like the guy, he did his job well, and it’s like kicking a man in the ribs when he’s down. Do the players have insurance policies that replace income when something like this happens. Anyone know?
I hope he recovers enough to establish himself as our number 3 receiver, has a great year, and gets a good contract from someone else.

  54. runman49 says:

Grant, FYI…the tuck rule has not been changed…its a proposal at this point.

  55. drty49 says:

There will probably be more players taking cuts to stay on this team, just my guess.

From Sando…”Michael Bennett was an undrafted free agent with Seahawks in 2009. 6-4, 275. Probably inside pass-rusher. 9 sacks in 2012.”

    • pete says:

  58. runman49 says:

Man, the Seahawks are gettin after it…

    • pete says:

Probably hoping he can replace Jason Jones. Didn’t he play on the end as well?

      • runman49 says:

Yes, just a read a tweet that compared the Bennet one year signing to the Jones one year signing…good call Pete…

  59. GoldRush says:

It’s strange that there has been no rumors as to any team interested in Heyward- Bey or Michael Huff.. DHB has got the speed downfield that could help the niners, and Huff is a good cover free safety. The niners dont seem to be interested in either

  60. runman49 says:

Somebody please proclaim Seattle as the next, “Dream Team”…

  61. Tha Grinch says:

  62. Steelematic says:

  63. RonnielottaSBsinSF says:

Dang Brotha! Just saw this, flipped on KQED hoping to catch some Baba O’Riley to find a stinking opera. Back to the Sharks….

  68. Mr. Everything says:

This is a fascinating post. Trust me.

Looks like Baalke fixin to stock the cupboards with draft picks. If only he had known he could have gotten Bennett for a song for a single year. But life is good. Niners already have 7 totally unknown, but now somewhat seasoned 2nd year players, in addition to James (dynamic threat), Jenkins (disappointing twig), & Celek (strong bloodline). If the 2012 draft was anything like as productive as the 2011 draft, which is still unknown, then our relative inaction this free-agency period makes perfect sense. Here’s a refresher:

    Looney (OG/C):
    Fleming (OLB):
    Robinson (FS):
    Johnson (DE/OLB):

    Hampton (RB):
    Jerod-Eddie (DT):
    Thomas (S):

I left these blank so you guys can cut and paste with input or opinions of your own.

This is a fascinating time. Next year the Niners can/will part ways with:
    Rogers ($7.3M) (? 2015)
    Brown ($3.9M)
    Whitner ($5M)
    J. Smith ($8M)
    Harylson ($2.9M)
    Boldin ($6M)
    Goodwin ($5M)
    Gore ($6.5M) (? 2014)
    Manningham ($1.8M)
    11 others (~$5.5M)

That’s 20 players and about $52M coming off the books in 2014, if none of these guys are re-signed. The Niners current cap space for 2014 is $33.7M, but if Rogers and Gore are gone, the Niners get another ~$14.5M, depending on “dead money” hits, which would be minimal for Rogers and presumably Gore too.

Superbowl this season, then re-sign Kaep, Aldon, Iupati, Davis, Hunter, and Crabtree to their next, long-term, guaranteed contracts before they get the chance to hit free agency.

  72. Brodie2Washington says:

Welcome aboard new special teams ace Dan Skuta, who just signed to a two-year contract with the 49ers.

    • Crab15 says:

B2W – I hope we get a bigger splash tomorrow than Dan Skata boy. Nnamdi is next right? Pete Carroll won’t lose any sleep over Skuta.

      • runman49 says:

The bigger picture isn’t Pete Carroll Crab…he’s got his own “dream” to worry about…and let me digress for a moment…I love…the draft capital he gave up for “Headache”…but yes, agree, think the news we are waiting for will be tomorrow…but if not…Huff isnt a bad backup plan…

      • Crab15 says:

        Runninman – I’d be ok with Huff….BTW
..a late welcome to the blog bro! I was awol for a month with Super Bowl depression….just starting to work my way back. There’s some great Niner fans in here that know football. You need 2 inch thick rhino skin to stay in here long term though. You’re off to a good start. Has Hoferfan been in here lately? He’s a legend in here.

      • Jack Hammer says:

No sight of Hofer lately Crab. Hope he didn’t have more tree problems.

Maybe we need to check the Chief boards out?

      • BigP says:

Now he is a legend on the Chiefs blogs. Lol, I keed…I keed. Hofer is a good dude.

      • runman49 says:

Thanks for the welcome Crab, I’ve beeh in and out of here a few times but never had the time…until now…to really contribute on a regular basis. Been a Niner fan since the early 70′s so I know a bit about them…also used to write for an amateur outfit….and as you already pointed out…lots of knowledgeable Niner fans here. I mean, crap, if you made a mistake you got crucified…so kudos of Grant to keeping this going. And by the way Jack…have a good friend who is a big time Chiefs fan…anything I should tell him?…LOL

      • Jack Hammer says:

Despite our back and forth’s I agree Crab. Would be interested in his take.

      • BigP says:

        Jack,
Lmao! The tree issues were legendary. There is no more shade on his property, but there is plenty of firewood. Here is Hofer taking care of his trees.

      • runman49 says:

        LOL…sorry Crab…didn’t mean to pre-date you…I’m out though…gotta go dye my gray hair…

      • BigP says:

        Crabs,
It’s all fun and games until somebody tears a MCL. I remember my last great alcohol induced faux pas very well. It was during the Raiders-Bucs Super Bowl. We started in on the Yaeger and Red Bull way too early, and I thought it would be a great idea to invite a few girls over that I had occasionally dated, completely oblivious to the conflict of interest it created. A cat fight ensued, and I ended up slapping my brother in law in the eye in retaliation for giving me a titty twister. Boys will be boys. Good times.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Might not be any more big names this FA season. A few signings for depth/special teams maybe. The rest is through the draft. Baalke loves those nice, cheap rookie salary capped contracts.

Long term cap issues loom. A free agent not signed today is a starter re-signed in 2014-15.

      • Crab15 says:

BigP – The black book was a great idea (you had a good fan club of hotties going!
Red bull was just taking off at the time. Yaeger will Jack u up. The cat fight could’ve turned into something way better but I love your way of thinking. The potential was there for a playboy mansion moment. I might have pulled that off bro. ;)
