Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, just reported the 49ers will not re-sign Randy Moss this offseason.
Pro Football Talk says the 49ers made it clear to people at the NFL Scouting Combine they would not be bringing Moss back to the team in 2013. This suggests the 49ers will look to add at least one wide receiver this offseason.
I have two questions for you. 1) Will the 49ers sign a receiver, draft one, or do both? 2) Is Randy Moss’ NFL career kaput?

49ers RSS feed
49ers draft a wr-randy plays next yr.
I think both one for offense and one that can play a 4th receiver and return kicks. Moss will go the Edwards route and sign with the Seahawks and be unproductive.
Nope,
He’s done. I don’t see any Team signing him.
:) :) :) :) :) :)
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.
I think they’ll draft two, they need to. It’s possible that the only viable starter they have at the moment is Crabtree. MM and KW could both possibly be ruined, AJ might be a bust and then leaves Chad and Ricardo.
They need to bring in at least two possibly even three receivers.
I agree with you Coffee. I believe there’s also a chance they grab low-cost WR in FA as well.
Agree !!
Didn’t get much of a rise on my mock -what do you guys think of R Woods in the first coupled DaRick Rogers in2/3 rounds? Crabs/Woods/Rogers and the last man standing from our roster could be lethal!
Woods in the first round is ludicrous.
Not with David Amerson and Brandon Williams following him…but thanks for the rise er Bunz!
Hightop,
I would like Da’Rick Rodgers but only after the 3rd rd.
He comes with a little baggage, as I mentioned last week.
But his physical size and speed would be nice against the bigger DB’ in our conference.
AES-thanks talented kid with baggage but he is young and with guidance could be special-Woods not really serious but threw it out for fun…he has talked to coach and might be on the board at 31-doubt we go WR if we stand pat.
Yes,
Enter 6’4″ Justin Hunter. The 49ers have nobody & haven’t had anybody with his size that’s been Productive since RC Owens in the 50′s.
This Kid could be had in the 2nd round.
That must be why I took him with my mock in the second round:
Draft:
Round 1 – Trade #31,#61} to Pittsburgh for #17 to draft D.Jones
Round 1 – Trade ’14 #1 to NE for #29 to draft Matt Elam
Round 2 – #34 GB trades us their #55 & #88 and ’14 #4 four the #34
Round 2 – #55 draft Justin Hunter WR
I like Hunter as a high-reward project too, especially somewhere in Rd#2, but Dwight Clark was 6’4″ and rather productive I’d say.
I think Justin Hunter is one of the top 5 WRs in this draft. Love to get him in the 2nd.
Randy Moss was supposed to be ‘that’ 6’4″ WR who could stretch the field. But it just never jelled for Moss.
J.Hunter would be a nice ‘get’ for us if we could draft him in April.
The main concern for me with what we do about a wide receiver is finding one who can catch tge football coming from Kap. It seems that our receivers had issues with that last year and although we hopes he develops more touch as a passer, his velocity is an issue for our receiving corps.
They need 3 WR, if Crab gets injured, who’s going to take his place!?!? Manningham was so-so, but is not a replaceent for Crab.
We need an impact player through FA if we want to be a contender!!
The 49ers should not pursue Bowe. They should bring in Branden Gibson and draft Quintan Patton in the 2nd Round. Moss opened his piehole at the most inopportune time and he thought he had a chance to be back?! Hell no!
Razoreater Quintan Patton is a great pick solid. I like Arron Dobson as well these are the both good picks. I hope we can grab two wr in this draft. We cannot go in the playoffs weak at wide receivers position again we need some young receivers to grow with Colin.
Definitely add a WR in the draft. If Manningham is a question mark, then adding a WR in FA as well makes sense.
1/ They’ll look at bargain FAs and draft one for sure, maybe draft 2, the second one late with return skills. At least one with size and speed. It shouldn’t change their plan much, they knew which way they wanted to go.
2/ Moss? It could happen, but nothing comes to mind.
Gregg Rosenthal posted a nice list of free agents. It sure looks likea buyers market this year.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000145968/article/top-85-free-agents-mike-wallace-heads-best-available
I’d like the team to take a look at Donnie Avery. He could be a deep threat for us relatively cheap.
Isn’t Avery a smaller, slot-type guy? Can he block?
Maybe I’m stuck in a mindset where an X should be tallish, fast and can block. It seems like JH likes to use TE/WB/FB combos more than using slot guys much of the time. Now that I’ve said that he’ll go draft Tavon just cross me up.
He’s 5’11″ 185′ish but he ran a 4.27 and has the ability to stretch the field.
He had 60 rec for just under 800 yards last year with the rookie Luck at QB. He has speed to take the top off of defenses and he’s a good cheap veteran option to line up if MM cant go.
@ Coffee
Well that there is some serious speed, and that’s why we lined up Moss and Ginn (also not so big) at X, so if they can live without the blocking (also like Ginn) I could see it.
I’ve been thinking of Avery as a potential option too coffee – if Manningham is released. He’s talented, just been unlucky with injury.
Look for the Niners to draft a WR or two. Outside of Bowe and Wallace, what other quality free agent WR are there?
Jennings and Welker are the other two, but the WR I like in free agency is David Nelson. He has size and has shown good redzone production in the past.
Nelson is restricted.
Bills didn’t tender for him, so he’s unrestricted. If his knee checks out he’s an interesting option.
http://www.cincyjungle.com/2013/2/25/4025470/2013-nfl-free-agency-wide-receiver-david-nelson-on-open-market
I would love to see David Nelson come to SF.
How about Brian Hartline as f.a. WR? He’s got some size and speed and might be within Trent’s price range.
I say we grab Don Nelson. He has a good scowl, barks a lot and has fine sideline pacing skills.
I think Brandon Gibson is a guy that could be worth looking at if Manningham is cut. He won’t cost the moon and can be a useful #2/ #3 WR.
Sounds like he could contribute. Here’s what Don Banks had to say about him in 2010:
2. David Nelson, WR, Florida — He elevated his draft stock at the Gators pro day, running 4.57 in the 40, with a 38-inch vertical leap and a broad jump of 10 feet, four inches. Though Nelson got overshadowed at times among all of Florida’s playmakers, scouts are enamored with his 6-5 height and ability to use his 217 pounds to block and give his quarterback a big target. “He’s a tough kid and a competitive kid,” one NFL scout told me. “He’s got rare height and he catches the ball well. He runs good routes and he’s just crafty. He’ll make someone’s team.”

He blew out his knee last year, there are better options.
Moss goes to Denver and Manningham stays. And the 49ers get harvin.
Harvin is due to get a new contract as the same time as Crabtree. I don’t know well that would work out.
Not really surprised by this news.
They will sign a FA WR and draft two as well. And as for Moss, just stick a fork in him because he’s done.
What about adding Amendola? Weakens division opponent and allows us to add a short quick white guy to an already TE dominated offense.
Someone will give him a fat contract, and I hope it isn’t the 49ers.
Short white guy… lol wat tha hell!!!!
Ya, guys like him are terrible, just like Wes Welker…..er….wait..
I’d love Amendola if he could make it to the bathroom in the morning without dislocating his pelvis.
Msclemon67-that was funny.Don’t mean to pry but how is your sweethearts health doing?
Short quick white guy… lol ?! Ryan Swope.
Amendola is a very good receiver when healthy. He has had bad luck over the last couple of years, but I can almost guarantee you that if he were to go to New England he would become the next Wes Welker. They would utilize him perfectly.
9ers will get Jennings and draft 2.
Moss is done. He has worn out his welcome n the NFL.
Mr. GOAT.
Grant… For all the predictions made and the die hards that swear they know whats coming next, here is all that we know for sure… When it comes to harbaugh n balkee we dont know squat. They are full of suprises
With that said i hope we go after mike wallace, use vern more in the red zone.. ie. Jump ball… And draft 2 good wr with return skillz because ginn doesnt have it anymore. Hasnt had it since game 1 against hawks last year
Is this the same PFT that reported Terry Bradshaw was dead?
The same PFT that on a daily basis posts “reports” like “Team A is talking to Player B” followed 30 minutes later by “Sources: Team A is not talking to Player B”?
My version:
Report: 49ers don’t deny that their stadium is delayed until 2020
Has anyone heard the 49ers deny a stadium delay? I haven’t. Let’s toss this at the wall and see if it sticks.
Bradshaw’s alive??
Undetermined. that guy on FOX might be a muppet.
All of the above said: I loved Randy’s response on Twitter.
I also loved the wag on PFT who said the 49ers should have signed Moss and then traded him to the Chiefs for their 2014 and 2015 2nd round picks.
No worries, the Niners resigned Joe Hasting!
+1, love it…
Well someone above was pining for a short white guy in our WR corps, Done and done
I see them bring in a WR FA and draft a WR. Our receiving core cant seem to stay healthy.
M’Lady and I went to see “Silver Linings” tonight. Chick Flick, kinda, but one of the good ones. More to it than just that, a good movie. I bring it up because it works in a good bit of fun around DeNiro as a crazy-as-me NFL fan. He’s am Eagles fan, but what are you going to do? Anyway, as a rough guess I think most on this blog would enjoy it.
Jennifer Lawrence is white-hot in that movie.
I’m not sure that 10-6 gets the niners into the playoffs in’13….
as a wild card maybe, but it will def be a dog fight with the hawks for the top spot in the division, and cant sleep on the rams either
Who cares how they get them, but can we at least hope that for next year’s playoffs they actually have a full roster of receivers (other than Crabtree) who are actual NFL players? Is that too much to ask? Because it hasn’t happened for two seasons now…
Why not dwayne bowe? Would that make our offense too potent for some of you? Rookies take years to develop. Our window is now.
Alan with all due respect Chris Givens was taken in the fourth round by the St. Louis Rams. Chris Givens made an immediate impact for the Rams. They got him in the fourth round. If you draft right you can get receivers that can make an immediate impact. This year’s group of receivers has a lot of talent there’s no reason why we can’t draft two that can make an immediate impact along with what we have already. it will be interesting to see out of this group of receivers who the 49ers select they surely will select at least one hopefully two.
Perhaps this is a sign that the 49ers are satisfied with the progress of A J Jenkins and they want to get him on the field.
Perhaps you have a bigger checkbook than the ‘cap’ will allow…you can only keep 53, better make them the RIGHT 53.
Great Mike Sando blog today about how NFL economics dictate how you build a team and why we cannot meet Goldson’s (or Revis’) salary demands.

How long until NFL.com scoops up Sando?
Hopefully it never happens. I like him concentrating his efforts on the NFC West.
Lots of good stuff from 49ers exec Paraag Marathe at this weeks MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. Paraag provides insight on how cap space, if 3-4 defenses are more cap expensive then the 4-3, the draft and so on.

Good read George.
Moss doesn’t grow on a rolling stone.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. :P
think wheeten as wr with #34 pick! After picking a nt,dt,or cb with the best player available!
Wheaton is another of my top 5 WRs in this draft – I actually think he could end up being the best WR out of the draft class. I’d definitely be happy if the 49ers take him.
Wheaton, Hunter, Patton, Austin, Patterson are my top 5 (not necessarily in that order). Hopkins just misses out. Allen, Woods and Williams I’m not as high on. Dobson, Rogers, King and Bailey are interesting 3rd round option.
Good top-5. Mine is similar: Wheaton, Austin, Bailey, Patton, Allen.
Here are my NFL comparisons for each WR.
Wheaton – Mike Wallace.
Austin – Randall Cobb.
Bailey – Greg Jennings.
Patton – Reggie Wayne.
Allen – Michael Crabtree.
Here’s an interesting article on Bailey, who led the nation with 25 receiving TDs in 2012.
http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/42202/321/wr-complement-stedman-bailey
Austin or Bailey, it’s a toss up. Both are football players with great production.
Bailey would fit better with the 49ers because he’s an outside receiver. Austin is a slot guy like Randall Cobb.
Good list Grant – I like the player comparisons. I’m not convinced about Allen, but agree his style of play is similar to Crabtree.
Let’s play the comparison game. I’ll go first.
Xavier Rhodes = faster, stronger, more explosive Nnamdi Asomugha.
Jesse Williams -Vince Wilfork
Good one. I’d be surprised if the Steelers didn’t draft Williams at 17.
Apologies – currently at work. Kawann Short I think is a similar player to Corey Liuget. Skill set is pretty similar.
Justin Hunter = Kenny Britt with slightly better athletic skills and slightly worse hands
Love it.

Good one. I’d be surprised if the Steelers didn’t draft Williams at 17.
—————————
You’d make that move to draft a guy that will barely play 50% of the snaps? He’s a nose tackle.
I disagree. He reminds me of Wilfork – a nose tackle who can play three technique also. I think Jesse Williams is underrated and Star Lotulelei is overrated.
Allow me to rephrase that in a less challenging tone:
I’m surprised that you would make a move all the way up to #17 for a guy that I only see playing about 50% of the time. He seems more like a nose tackle to me.
C.Patterson;K.Allen;Q.Patton;J.Hunter;D.Rogers-presently.
Grant Cohn says:

a nose tackle who can play three technique also.
———————
I haven’t watched him play so I cant say for sure but most of his write ups don’t suggest he’s got great 3 technique ability, he really sounds like a NT to me.
If he cant play the tackle position in nickle then we’ve given up a lot for a guy who’ll barely play half the defensive snaps in a game.
This guy agrees with ya though: “COMPARES TO: Vince Wilfork, New England Patriots — Like the Patriots’ run-stuffing nose guard, Williams isn’t going to pressure the quarterback often but his size and strength will make him a force in the middle.”
I thought this twitter thread was interesting: https://twitter.com/ECStoner/status/300817829341577216
We’d have to give up some decent picks to get to #17 in my scenario it was the 31,61&125 which would still leave the #34 I guess for a decent DE. Would you do that and who or would you go FA or wait another year to get JS’s eventual replacement?
Also do we end up dropping McDonald after a year at his salary if we draft Williams?
With so many draft picks there’s no excuse not to draft wide receivers at least two in this draft. As I see it we don’t need any free agent wide receivers with such a good group of wide receivers available in this draft. We need to draft two receivers two defensive lineman two defensive backs a field-goal kicker a quarterback at tight end that has size and hands and possibly a star running back for the future. Last year the Rams selected Chris Givens in the fourth round. There is no reason why we can’t select to good receivers out of this draft and solidify that position for the future. Whatever draft picks we don’t need we can trade for future picks. The Rams and Seahawks have done well in the draft and will continue to do well. We must hold our own in the draft. The draft will either make you or break you the 49ers need to be very successful in this draft if they want to stay on top of the two contenders in our division the Rams Seahawks.
I agree with you Mr. Arata.
Here’s a link to a well written article explaining differences between the pass rush in a 3-4 vs. a 4-3. I offer this because it’s been a mystery to me and some of you might benefit. No offense to the guys who already understand.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1289011-showcasing-the-biggest-differences-in-the-4-3-and-3-4-pass-rush
That’s a good article George. It’s missing a key element though – it describes the 2-gap 3-4 but not the 1-gap 3-4 that Fangio prefers. In a 1-gap 3-4, the DL are expected to pressure the QB as well by hitting the gaps between the OL, rather than hitting the OL head on.
Another good point from Scooter. Just in general you’ve been offering some good football insights, and I’ve appreciated your draft/combine inputs also.
Now if we can get you to sharpen up your insults and put-downs and petty biases when you debate, and if you’ll pick one forty Niner to habitually hate on without regard to their actual performance you can be a star on this blog!
Just kidding, man, keep that football knowledge coming. ; >)
I got a good laugh out of that, thanks! Still chuckling. I’ll think about those insults.
Scooter, that’s why I’m not a big fan of bleacherreport. That article seems to describe more of how the 3-4 was ran some time ago, than as it is now under Fangio and other DC’s as you described.
Did you notice how they used Woodley and Ware as examples with no mention of Aldon Smith or Clay Matthews? Sure seems like they should have been mentioned in an article that, in part, was discussing the role of rush LB’s since they are the big names in the league right now.
Made a comment about Paraag Marathe and the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference just before noon. The comment had some links to Mike Sando’s columns. As of 3:40 it still says “comment awaiting moderation.”
Fine with the PD moderating comments. Why is it taking so long?
It’s up there. Take another look.
Yup. Someone finally fixed it around 4pm.
for over 3 hours it said “comment awaiting moderation” (even refreshing page and restarting the web browser).
Now if they can only tone down the auto-refresh. Its driving everyone crazy.
Regarding the auto refresh, if I am writing more than a few lines, I periodically save it with my mouse. If you can do that, you won’t lose anything.
George,
Smart man, right click and copy that bad boy! Lol. I use Chrome, and even after the refresh, my post will still be there as long as I was already signed in. It’s still annoying though.
Hi George. That’s what I do… or I write it in notepad, then paste into the window. Starting a few weeks ago, the PD reduced the time between auto-refresh intervals.
The auto-refresh still drives me nuts. I have bad hands from running jackhammers in the 80′s. Typing aint easy, even a few lines. Grrrr
That’s a good article by Mike Sando by the way.
@Brodie2Washington:
As I understand it, any comment with more than one link is automatically held up for moderation, which means it won’t be published until Grant approves it.
Brodie, sorry about those hands. Ever look into software that converts your speech into typing? Never tried it myself. Could be helpful.
Here is an early Free Agent wish list. Listed in personal order of priority:
Chris Clemons – You’ll get sick of me talking about this kid until someone signs him and I’m really hoping it’s us. He’s a big upgrade of Whitner and even if he isn’t an upgrade over Goldson, which I think he can be, he is not drop off. He’ll also be quite a bit cheaper then Goldson.
Adam Jones(pacman) – This was always a guy who had a million dollar talent with a two cent head. They say he’s grown up and if that’s true I think he’s worth a contract. At worst he’s a huge upgrade in the nickle and possibly over either Brown or Rogers.
Donnie Avery – Not big but he he’s fast. When healthy Avery is a legitimate X receiver that can take the top off the defense and open things up for Davis and Crabtree underneath. If not in the X he can be insurance against MM not being healthy and at the very least he’s an upgrade over Kyle Williams.
Pat Sims – With how infrequent we actually use a nose tackle I don’t think we have much to lose with this kid. He hasn’t produced much but maybe he just hasn’t had the right coaches. He can be a true 2 gap nose tackle something we haven’t had and truly need to make the 3-4 as potent as it can be. I’d like to see what Fangio can do with him and I don’t think he’ll cost us very much anyway.
S, CB, WR, DT
At least three strong upgrades at starting positions and maybe a diamond in the rough for the defensive line.
Cornelius “Tank” Carradine DE FSU might be worth the risk late in the first round/early second. From what I’ve been reading, he is expected to be fully healthy by April. Teams pro day is March 19, but not sure if he will be participating. I like him better than Werner.
I would very surprised if the team does not make any deals before the draft. We now have a bus load of draft picks (maybe only 4-5 make the team), and I have to believe that the Org has set itself up over the last couple of years for this very scenario.
We have the ‘drafting power’ to be very creative and and very attractive to other teams.
We could conceivably make some moves to get us into the top 12-15 in the 1st rd.
@AES
I agree that getting as high as 12-15 is possible with our package of picks but I’m not as confident that any deals would happen pre-draft. Maybe if some team wanted badly to trade down and would offer a deal Trent couldn’t resist, but otherwise my guess is he’d do any deals on the fly during the draft. My thinking is if he sees someone drop he can pay just what he needs to go get him rather than grabbing the spot and hoping one of your guys is there when it comes up. I also think that waiting until the moment gives other teams opportunities to offer a trade back to Trent.
I’m starting to get the feeling Green Bay could be interested in paying Goldson his $8 million a year….interesting.
Signs point to his leaving the team.
Grant,
remember that parasite Darren? Was that actually DS?
I heard that if you said his name 3 times while looking in a mirror he’d appear and hijack your thread.
I went out and purchased a higher level encryption PC anti virus when that dude showed up….
Bay,
I think the auto-refresh is a desperate attempt to recover the page hits after BS’s departure. Yesterday, I saw an old woman on the side of interstate 580 in a Alex Smith Chiefs jersey, trying to hitchhike with a sign that read “K.C. or bust!” She looked like she had been there for some time.
He’s currently over at the Gate causing havoc and loving it because the fans over there don’t know better than to ignore him. Poor Eric and Kevin, lol.

Yeah, he is going under a name like “slingding” and all his posts are just what we saw here. You can always tell a Darren post when you see one.
Actually, it is “shingding.” Here is his last post over there in his answer to being called a troll after his anti-Harbaugh, anti-Kaepernick rants.

Are we going to try out Silberman she has to be better than Akers
No, she went back to being a nobody after her pathetic publicity stunt lasted all of two kicks. She should feel like an idiot for taking the spotlight from players that actually have some talent. She struggled putting the football on the tee and had no business being there.
I wanted to make a comment about Cullen Jenkins. As you all must know, he is visiting tomorrow. Correct me if I am wrong, but they usually wait until the signing frenzy is over before they bring UFAs in, don’t they? I am supposing that they think he would be worthy of rotating with J. Smith and McDonald. The man is big, puts pressure, and gets sacks. I am also supposing that his agent told them that he is on Jenkins’ short list. He’s another one of those productive defensive linemen who was not drafted.
@ George:
While the 49ers may well be interested in Jenkins, I wouldn’t read too much into the timing of the visit. I think the 49ers are talking to Jenkins now because, as a player who was released from his contract, he’s available now. FAs aren’t available until the start of the new league year (March 12).
You’re right of course. But I am wondering if he is one of the few they would prepare a special offer for. Just speculating. Justin and Ray clearly could have used a break last year. It would be unusual to find someone in the draft, even in the first round, who will see much playing time.
Wait. I see what you’re saying. They could sign him now?
Then let’s see if they make him an offer he can’t refuse.
They could.
Desmond Bryant DT Raiders would be a good pickup is he can avoid anymore trouble.
I can see Seattle picking up Moss for a 1 year deal. they always go after our guys.
Anything to irritate -big on my wish list next year kick Seattle’s a**!
Seattle tends to covet similar players as the 49ers in general. Makes it tough when they draft ahead of us.
