Who do you think is the best quarterback prospect in the draft?
I am not fond of the consensus No.1 QB prospect, Geno Smith. He had a hot start to the 2012 season, defenses adjusted to him and then his performance went south. He’s being overrated because he can run a 4.5 40-yard dash and has experience playing in the Pistol formation.
I believe the best QB prospect in the draft is Tyler Wilson from the University of Arkansas. Based on his junior season tape, he has serious potential. That year he passed for 3,638 yards, 24 TDs and just 6 interceptions.
His senior season was a travesty. His head coach, Bobby Petrino, got fired. The team lost several players and there was general dysfunction within the entire Arkansas football program.
Wilson has a good delivery and fluid movement in the pocket, although he isn’t a freak athlete like Colin Kaepernick. Wilson is more of a prototypical pocket passer, but he has more mobility than Matt Barkley and Mike Glennon, and definitely more than Ryan Nassib.
I believe Wilson is a better prospect than the quarterback who preceded him at Arkansas and got drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2011 draft – Ryan Mallett.
Yahoo NFL columnist Les Carpenter thinks Wilson has a good chance to get drafted in the first round. To read Carpenter’s article, click here.

Grant, I couldn’t agree more. I think Geno Smith will be a career backup honestly. Wilson is the best QB in the draft.
EJ Manuel or Tyler Bray…
I thought about Bray also but how many successful NFL QB’s OVER 6’5″ can you name?
Joe Flacco
Any others? I also like to remind people that halfway during the 2012 season Alex Smith was considered a better QB then Joe Flacco, just saying.
Colin Kaepernick
You’re right. Effective tall (6’6 +) qbs are the exception.
I sure haven’t looked at much QB tape, but Manuel looked ok as a possible Harbaugh apprentice.
Landry Jones, and he’ll also be the biggest value.
I too like Landry Jones trade value after being whispered sweet nothings by Harbaugh for a year or two.
Jack:
Larry Kreuger agreed that those two are the best QB’s in this years draft on his KNBR radio show this Morning ! (EJ Manuel , Tyler Bray,in that order)
From what I’ve read it’s hard to make a case against ya on Wilson, if I had to pick one or two other names I’d go with; Zac Dysert or Matt Scott who I still like a lot. I’d try and make the case that Dysert is maybe a better prospect but he flubbed at the Senior Bowl which is something I put a lot of stock in.
Wilson will be a second day QB, but if Scott goes in the second or 3rd round, somebody is making a desperate reach. Niners would like Scott on day 3.
I have a gut feeling that ryan nassib will be the best qb out of this class, when it’s all said an done
Geno Smith and its not even close for me, but then again I picked Alex Smith over Rodgers so….
So, you don’t get a vote?
I have a strong feeling that Tolzien will be our #2 next yr if we draft a QB this yr he will end up being #3 for at least 1 yr
I’d feel far more comfortable with a veteran backing up Kaep – not because of injury, but because Kaep is still young and would really benefit from having a vet that has been on the field and can relate to what Kaep is seeing.
Look for them to bring in a couple guys to compete. One through the draft and one through free agency.
Should make training camp and exhibition games interesting.
Yep, that’s what I was thinking, 4 in camp again.
Scooter
You’re joking, right? Didn’t Harbaugh play QB for a year or two?
Keep doubting Kaep, idiot.
I’m not joking Mr Everything, and I’m not doubting Kaep either. Harbaugh doesn’t have time during the game to be going over what Kaep is seeing – he has to manage the whole team. Having that veteran pair of eyes on the sideline to discuss things with Kaep is invaluable. In fact, Kaep has said as much about having Smith there to help him.
As for the idiot comment, you know where you can stick that.
Meh. Would it benefit Kaepurnicus to have Alex in his corner. Sure would. However, in this situation, rather than bring in a veteran backup who does not know this particular offense, I would submit hiring Mr. Ault to fill that role would be a better idea. Better to draft that third quarterback to groom for future draft picks.
Mr. E winning friends and influencing people.
I am neither against a vet QB being brought in or against bringing in Kap’s coach Ault(which I like better !),but isn’t it the QB’s coaches job to coach up the QB’s during the game ? Isn’t Geep Crist getting any credit for how well Kap is doing ? He should !
Unless Tolzien ‘really’ shows-up in TC, he may be a casaulty this year.
I believe that ST was more suited to releive Alex Smith rather than CK.
Our offense would need to drastically change if Tolz had to releive CK. I see the team making a pitch at Josh Johnson and installing him at the back-up position.
I also have the team drafting Collin Klein on day three and see Harbaugh coaching him up to become the eventual #2 behind CK.
Oh, and I see D.Revis in the starting line-up come September.
At the end of the day, this just isn’t a good QB class.
Tyler Wilson?? You can’t be serious! Man this site is going the way of the bleacher report. And that’s not good. I used to come on here a lot when Eric was here. We use to have more insightful debate. But Tyler Wilson?? WT…?
Tyler is just a product of Petrino’s QB friendly offense. Just like Brian Brohm and Ryan Mallet before him. I sure hope Baalke doesn’t get brain freeze, and actually picks this guy
Baalke does not choose QBs, Harbaugh does.
Has anybody linked to this yet? pretty cool perspective on valuing 9ers FAs.

Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. This is a “must read,” in my opinion.
A couple of interesting conclusions it draws:
1. Sopoaga is our most overvalued player and, I am quoting, “It’s not just that the 49ers are paying Sopoaga a ridiculous amount for a guy who played 30.3% of the team’s defensive snaps — it’s that he’s not even that good. The defensive end turned nose tackle offers nothing as a pass rusher, but it’s his inability to make plays in the run game that stands out. Aubrayo Franklin he is not.”
2. Goldson’s “performance based value” last year was $5.0 million. Uh oh. Houston, we have a problem.
There are other interesting conclusions too. Very good article.
It’s tough to think they’ll bring back Sopoaga when his value is lower than the vet minimum.
1. Mike Glennon
2. Tyler Bray
3. E.J. Manuel
4. Ryan Nassib
5. Tyler Wilson
6. Matt Scott
7. Geno Smith
8. Matt Barkley
9. Zac Dysert
10. Landry Jones
Of these QB’s, I believe that E.J. Manuel fits our offense best.
I agree, but EJ has moved into the 2nd rd. Next best would be Matt Scott
I agree on Scott.
Here’s a video of a guy who looks like he would be a good kick returner and can also play safety. 6 feet, 200 lbs., 4.36 speed.
Oh yeah, he’s already on our team.

Agreed Jai.
M.Scott would be a good fit as well. He may thrive in our offense.
This years QB pack is a big Yawnnnn……I’d just sit back and try and draft kid from SJSU when he’s ready to leave the campus for the NFL, now that kid has the rasberry jam, too lazy to Google his name right now
Having a coach that develops QB talent is quite a luxury.
The Niners could draft Wilson (or another QB) in late, train him up, showcases him in a few 4th qtr laugher games, then trade him for high picks later.
I’m a Matt Scott fan… great fit for our team imo.Any of you hear of this kid Peter Lalich -6’5” 235lb can throw the ball 70+yds scored 37 wonderlic-but because of lack of maturity he got caught for underage drinking -asked to leave Oregon State was invited to California Penn.-threw for 4000 + last year-no combine but Pro Day 3/11 -UDFA find?
Funny you say that cuz i was telling my friend that i thought he was the best QB in the draft.. but i dont think he’s as good as ryan mallet.. i was very high on him also
Wilson has some serious potential. Good leader. Smart kid. Tough. Dude is not afraid to stand in the pocket and take a hit. However, that has lead to some concussions which hampered his senior season. His team gave up half way through the season and the coaching situation caused a lot of drama. So I wouldn’t use that as a gauge of what he’s capable of.
