35 expected for afternoon practice

Today’s 49ers practices are like a two-seating dinner. The veterans swept through for a voluntary OTA this morning. At 3:45 this afternoon, they will be supplanted by 35 rookies and first-year players: eight draft picks, nine undrafted free agents, 12 rookies getting tryouts and six players who are technically first-year guys though they came out a year ago.

For those of you keeping score at home:

The newest edition is Brandon Long, who was a rookie out of Michigan State last year, and was just signed to a two-year contract. He was honorable-mention All-Big Ten as a senior in 2008, with 5½ sacks. If Long surprises everyone and ends up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he won’t need directions. He’s from Canton, Ohio.

Long’s arrival was bad news for Shay Hodge, the Mississippi wide receiver who was originally announced as a undrafted free agent. Hodge was the odd man out.
