49ers-Broncos post-game recap

Tight end George Kittle breaks a tackle during the 49ers preseason game against the Broncos

SANTA CLARA

Stay tuned for my grades, which I will post shortly. In the mean time, check out my post-game Periscope recap below. Sorry for the poor video quality. My phone must have gotten disconnected from the stadium’s wifi. I’m still working out the kinks. This is preseason for me, too.

  1. Grant, you still are looking down at us, put the phone about 6″ higher
The shirt and tie makes you look like a sunday school boy
White Tshirt and jacket suits you better
Were there people watching? you seemed more nervous.

      1. The official media backdrop was a nice touch though. I guess you have a little pull with the team’s media folks?

  2. Only part way through watching, but on Hoyer, that INT wasn’t a good throw. It was behind Goodwin. Goodwin should have caught it, but he had to reach behind for it.

    1. Yeah, catchable but could have been a better throw. That’s how I felt about the Vance drop, that pass was a little too high.

  3. Good recap, thanks Grant.
I would definitely agree about the discipline. A team with middle of the road talent can compete and have some success if they are a tough, disciplined team whereas a very talented team can be sunk if they aren’t. The 9ers will get mauled by good teams if Shanahan doesn’t get it under control. He can’t be nice and easy going all the time. Also agree about the honeymoon period……hopefully the pressure (and your question to him) make him realize he needs to be a bit more of a hard-a$$ when necessary.

Good on you for getting a tripod…..also agree with Dee Phiant about the shirt, you’re not a highschool teacher man ;) Invest a few better quality/better fitted shirts and you’ll look sharper. You don’t gotta go tight but not loose either….you’re not Andy Reid! :p
This is all nitpicking though…..solid game recap.

  4. I think we should trade Arik and Hyde for a cornerback and guard.
You were right they should have drafted a corner or safety instead of Thomas.
Williams and Breida to me should start and I’m not sure on Hoyer but we’ll see.
Bethard has promise and I like Kittle.
    Jerome looks good.

  5. On the bright side, we avoided the 4-0 preseason curse. The interior O-line looked awful.
Main pitfalls to a winning season
    – Interior offensive line
    – Lack of defensive backfield depth
    – Lack of overall depth. If the Niners have the same injury rates as 2014 through 2017 4 wins will be difficult.

    Liked:
    – Aggressive Reid. Could be as simple as tackling angles being easier from the SS spot, which allows Reid to play faster.
    – Foster showed good middle to sideline speed
    – D had very good QB pressure early on. Denver got the ball out quickly.
    – TEs looked good.
    – Hoyer looked sharp (except on that fluke dropped ball)
    – Tartt’s closing speed from deep safety prevented a huge run. Not his usual spot. Proper tackling angles more challenging.

  6. I don’t think the niners running game was that good last year. It looked much better than it was due to qb scrambles and runs. The run blocking was terrible last year. Brown while good at pass blocking was the second worst run blocking tackle in the league. Beadles was the 3rd worst blocker in the league regardless of position and garnet only graded out 2 points better than him.
The niners running game was only made to look decent due to the number of scrambles and carries by the qb. They had over 500 yards rushing from that position. Take away those numbers and you will see that that they were a below average rushing team.

  7. Grant I really like this periscope thing. Me myself and I do not care what you look like nor what the back drop is, and could care less of the video quality, just hearing is good enough. Good job.

    1. There is always room for improvement, and am glad that he tried to get a better backdrop. His last periscope at the stadium had too many distractions, and the latest one felt like he was a coach or a player, but after last game, I felt that it associated himself too closely with the team. He should be more independent.
      .
To me, Grant looked pixelated, so it was hard to watch, but agree it was what he said that was the most important thing.
