49ers @ Cardinals live blog: Third quarter

This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers’ Week 17 game in Arizona against the Cardinals. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

3:04 Hunter returns the kick 22 yards to the SF 26.

3:07 The 49ers go three-and-out. Kaepernick gains 14 yards on a naked bootleg on first down. But he sails a pass high to Crabtree the next play, then Gore gains three on second down, and Kaepernick never sees a wide open Crabtree on third down. Instead, he overthrows Boldin deep. Lee punts. Touchback.

3:12 NaVorro Bowman strips Rashard Mendenhall at the Cardinals’ 35 and recovers. He already intercepted a pass in this game. He’s probably going to win Defensive Player of the Year.

3:20 Jim Harbaugh goes for it on fourth-and-six-inches at the Cardinals’ 16. Roman calls a handoff to fullback Anthony Dixon, who gains just four inches. The 49ers turn it over on downs. Harbaugh is challenging the spot.

3:24 The refs confirm their ruling. The 49ers have two more timeouts and one more challenge.

3:30 Fangio sends an all-out blitz on fourth-and-6, Willis hits Palmer who wildly flings a pass downfield. It lands 10 yards in front of Fitzgerald, and the Cardinals turn it over on downs at the 49ers’ 36.

3:35 The 49ers go three-and-out. On third-and-1, Roman calls another Dixon run and this time he loses five yards. The 49ers keep trying and failing to run on third or fourth-and-short. After the punt, it’s Cardinals ball at their 15.

3:44 The Cardinals face second-and-8 at the 49ers’ 30 when the fourth quarter begins.
