49ers @ Cardinals live blog: Third quarter

This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers Week 8 game in Arizona against the Cardinals. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room in Oakland.

7:15 John Skelton completes back-to-back passes for a first down to start the drive, then he hands off for no gain. The Cardinlals need to abandon the run game.

7:20 Skelton completes a 27-yard pass to tight end Jeff King, who beat Aldon Smith on the play. The Cardinals go nowhere after that. They punt. Niners ball at their 20.

7:26 Alex Smith throws a 10-yard pass to a wide open Randy Moss on third and 10. Two Cardinals whiff on Moss, and he sprints 47 yards for a touchdown. 24-0 49ers. Earlier in the drive on a third-and-9, Smith threw a five yard pass to Michael Crabtree. William Gay whiffed and Crabtree ran 25 yards. The 49ers have made the Cardinals look like a dreadful team.

7:28 Jon Gruden just said the 49ers have gained more than 100 yards after the catch. The Cardinals defense has stopped Gore – he’s averaging just 3.6 yards per carry – but they can’t tackle anyone else.

7:40 The Cardinals offense abandons the run and passes their way down the field over the course of 14 plays. On fourth and 2 from the 10 yard line, Ken Whisenhunt concedes defeat and kicks a field goal. 24-3 Niners with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.

7:46 Gore gains 1 yard on first down. He’s gained just 55 yards on 16 carries.

7:47 Alex Smith takes a sack and loses 10 yards on Second and 9. Darnell Dockett beat Alex Boone up the middle.

7:49 Smith throws a quick pass to Crabtree in the flat. Peterson misses another tackle and Crabtree picks up 8 yards. They go three and out. C.J. Spillman tackles Peterson immediately on the punt and the Cardinals start their drive at the 37.
