49ers @ Chargers preseason live blog: Second quarter

This is the live blog for the second quarter 49ers preseason game against the Chargers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

7:42 Corey Lemonier blows by right tackle Michael Harris and sacks Whitehurst on second-and-three and the Chargers go three-and-out.

7:48 LaMichael James injured his knee and he is out.

7:49 McCoy leads the offense 27 yards for a field goal. 10-3 Niners. McCoy completes one pass for five yards on the drive. It’s hard to imagine Seneca Wallace couldn’t do better than this.

7:55 Cam Johnson beats Max Starks on second-and-ten for a sack, then Johnson beats Max Starks on third down and hits Whitehurt, forcing him to throw a pick to Michael Wilhoite.

7:59 McCoy completes a short pass in the flat to Dixon, he breaks one tackle and scores the touchdown. 17-3 Niners.

8:08 Fozzy Whittaker runs for 7 yards, 10 yards, 4 yards, 5 yards and then no yards on third-and-one. The Chargers punt. McCoy still is in the game.

8:10 The 49ers start from their own 3. Jewel Hampton loses two yards on first down, gains it back on second down and the Dixon goes nowhere on third down. The 49ers punt. Tasker returns it to the 49ers’ 34.

8:17 Cam Johnson beats Max Starks again and sacks Whitehurst on second-and-five. Perrish Cox makes a nice open-field tackle on Robert Meachem on third down and the Chargers go three-and-out. Then they kick a field goal. 17-6 Niners.

8:24 Jewel Hampton gains 14 on first down, forcing a couple missed tackles. But Austin Collie drops a semi-deep pass from McCoy, and on the next play, third-and-ten, McCoy throws a low pass to Hall, which he dropped. That’s the end of the first half.

8:26 McCoy’s first half stats: 6-for-11, 45 yards (4.1 ypa), 1 TD and a 94.9 passer rating.
