49ers @ Chiefs preseason live blog: First quarter

This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

5:03 Joe Staley just called Alex smith and “a really solid quarterback.”

5:04 Craig Dahl is the starting free safety tonight, not Eric Reid.

5:05 Quinton Patton and Kyle Williams are suited up, but it is unclear whether they will play.

5:06 Alex Smith and the Chiefs will have the ball first.

5:13 Ray McDonald stops Knile Davis on third and one, but Andy Reid goes for it on fourth and one. Alex Smith hands off to Davis again, but this time Glenn Dorsey and Michael Wilhoite miss him and Davis gains three yards. Next play, Justin Smith tackles Davis in the backfield for a one-yard loss. Smith’s next two passes are dropped, and the Chiefs punt. LaMichael James makes a diving catch at the Niners’ 25 yard line.

5:15 Frank Gore is on the field, and on the first play, he cuts back to the left in the backfield and gains 52 yards. The 49ers go nowhere after this play. James loses three yards and the Gore gains two and then Kaepernick overthrows Chad Hall on a corner route in the end zone. Phil Dawson makes the 47-yard field goal. 3-0 Niners.

5:21 Quinton Demps just returned the kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown. 7-3 Chiefs. He didn’t make a single cut. He just ran right down the middle of the 49ers’ defense. Cam Johnson was not where he was supposed to be. He probably won’t make the team. Demps gained 30 yards on the first kickoff of the game. The 49ers’ special teams looks subpar so far this preseason.

5:25 Harbaugh pulls Kaepernick after one throw. Colt McCoy is in the game.

5:27 Mike Iupati makes a nice block on first down and James gains five yards up the  middle. On second down, McCoy drops back to pass, Jordan blitzes up the middle, Iupati misses him and Jordan sacks McCoy for a five-yard loss. On third-and-10, McCoy drops back and passes to Jenkins, who is running a deep stick route against Sean Smith. Jenkins slips as he makes his cut and Smith easily knocks the pass away. The 49ers go three-and-out.

5:30 The 49ers force Smith and the Chiefs three-and-out. Perrish Cox blitzes on first down and sacks Smith for a ten yard loss. Cox is playing his way onto the team ahead of Nnamdi Asomugha.

5:33 James makes a fair catch at the 49ers’ nine yard line.

5:34 It’s Tolzien Time.

5:35 Tolzien fumbles the snap on first down. That’s not going to help his trade value.

5:36 James cuts back on an outside zone run and gains six yards up the middle on second down. On third-and-7, Tolzien throws behind Hall on a drag route and the pass almost gets picked off. Andy Lee punts to Dexter McCluster.

5:37 Trenton Robinson is flagged 15 yards for running down the field out of bounds as a gunner. He’s in contention to be a starting gunner. That won’t help his bid to win that job.

5:42 Smith completes a 10-yard pass to McCluster in front of Craig Dahl and Perrish Cox on third-and-seven. Three plays later on third-and-three, Smith throws high and out of bounds for Jonathan Baldwin, who was running a fade against Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha had perfect coverage. The Chiefs make the field goal. 10-3 Chiefs.

5:44 Tolzien is out. McCoy is back.

5:45 Behind the first-team offensive line, James tries to bounce a run outside to the right and loses two yards.

5:46 On second down, James sprints into the line of scrimmage and bounces off of Anthony Davis.

5:46 McCoy scrambles for 12 yards on third-and-11.

5:47 James gains five yards up the middle on the final play of the first quarter. It will be second-and-five when the second quarter begins.
