49ers cut Marcus Martin

The San Francisco 49ers just released center Marcus Martin — a former third-round pick.

This is a good move for two reasons:

  1. Martin isn’t athletic enough for Kyle Shanahan’s outside-zone running game.
  2. Martin is a terrible player.

I like how active the the new regime has been at getting rid of players who have no future with the franchise. Can you name some more players you think the 49ers will cut or trade before the season starts?

      1. Productive? When he wasn’t getting flagged for a stupid penalty. He isn’t worth his contract and his skills are diminishing. He’s been trade bait for years but nobody wants him.

        1. Brooks maybe one of the worst-performing OLBs in the league but he was more productive than Eli, Tank or Lynch (who missed 5 games). Brooks 6 sacks last season was more than these three combined (4.5).

Brooks has 53.5 career sacks (at least 6 sacks every season for the last 6 seasons), and is threatening to be on Niners’ 10-year wall. Can’t cut him until there is a replacement.

          1. “Brooks maybe one of the worst-performing OLBs in the league.”

            You said it bro!!!!!!!

              1. That team would be the Browns. We can address the edge through the draft, FA. or give Lynch a shot.

          2. On one hand Brooks really isn’t a real fit for the 49ers new defense. He’s not pass-rush enough for Elephant. He’s not coverage enough for Sam. He’s not a fit for Mike.

OTOH, I think we have his replacement — Ray Ray Armstrong. Armstrong, when he’s not being a selfish, me-first idiot (which has been most of his career), really fits the Sam profile.

That doesn’t mean Brooks will get cut. Or that he doesn’t have under-utilized coverage skills we’ve never seen. Or that Ray-Ray won’t turn back into the *** clown he’s been for most of his football life.

I do think he’s on more of a bubble thanks to all the changes than he has been in the past.

            1. I can see Brooks in some elephant roles such as disrupting the tight end release. Agree that he could get cut at the end of TC.

              1. “Agree that he could get cut at the end of TC.”

Geez, why did you even disagree with my post in the first place?

          3. Elk Harold wasn’t that far behind him. Had 3 sacks last year (but should be 4 sacks if he wasn’t called for horse collar tackling of Russell Wilson in week 3). He also played a lot off the line of scrimmage, which is what he will be doing in the new 4-3 defense.

      2. http://www.ninersnation.com/2016/7/1/12081064/pff-ranks-ahmad-brooks-as-2nd-worst-edge-rusher-contract

“Average remaining cap hit (per season): $8.32 million
Year he can realistically be cut: 2017”

“Brooks was playing well when he first signed his six-year, $37 million contract, but he hasn’t made the sort of impact required since 2012. Not since 2013 has he graded positively as a pass-rusher. Brooks managed only 35 combined pressures in 399 snaps a year ago, finishing with a 47.6 pass-rush grade.”

    1. #80,

If you want to dump players, you also have to consider how to replace them. There is so little depth on this team that some vets are going to have to be kept.

      1. Cowboy said the house cleaning would take two years. I don’t argue with Cowboy.

    2. Are they going to get rid of Kaepernick? I hope he’s picked up in FA and doesn’t come back to SF! I want Reid cut, he’s a Kap sell out. I want Brooks cut as well. Glad they got rid of T Smith, don’t ever sign anymore Raven players on the 49ers.

    1. All 3 good candidates, Razor. Skov might get into TC because of lack of ILB if they cut Wilhoite.

    2. According to Rotoworld, 49ers have inked Hoyer. No further details other than that momentarily . . .

  1. This regime is building a team that will be competitive no matter who the QB might be. With the zone read Hyde should have a banner year and with the improvement in receivers that area of the game has improved. I hope that they don’t give away the store to get Cousins this year. With what they have now and even with Ponder they look like an 8 and 8 team. Now can the draft bring them to 10 and 6 and another shot at the paly-offs.

    1. Grant

SOOO Happy he’s gone ! He was only taking up space and a roster slot; showed no signs of growth…should have been cut two years ago…100% agreement of your assessment…

      1. No, it deserves posting twice. When this team finally dumps its losers, you know things are looking up! I can’t ever remember MM playing well.

I want Cousins or Garoppolo. There is no need for Shannylynch to take a “we’ll win someday, years from now” approach. They can be competitive now! and why wait? I suspect they feel this way, but are just keeping that sentiment to themselves so as to not raise expectations.

        It’s time to win again.

  3. Perhaps a stupid question but why not trade Smith, Bethea, and Martin? I’m sure it would only be for low round picks but why not?

    1. You release because they don’t smell good enough for a team to come around and sniff…;>)

    2. My question is why do people think players who are complete trash have a market value? I have never understood this.

I mean., these guys were bad players relative to other players on a bad roster… Making them the worst of a 2-14 team…

      1. Bethea and Smith are not trash. They might be past their prime but both are players who other teams will sign.

        1. They are not trash, but no one wants to trade for a player that they predict will be cut. It’s kind of like playing lier’s dice.

    3. You and Seb are trying to turn sand into golden seventh round picks. No takers. That’s why.

  4. Forget Cousins. Sign Romo Thursdays and then Trubisky at #2 overall. There. Set!

Source: FA QB Brian Hoyer is headed to the #49ers. Reunion with Kyle Shanahan

        1. Pefecto! Shanahan has his ideal backup and if necesario his bridge QB. But Cousins also should be on the westward bound glory train much sooner than later. If so, we will be a viable playoff contender again this year, never mind down the road. Amazing what can happen when you sweep the impostors off the roster and out of the FO . . .

      1. Snyder, you should have taken our deal of 2017 2nd and 2018 4th. Now all you’re getting is a walking cousins (is that better than a kissing cousins?) and a 2018 comp 3rd.

    1. I guess the Chicago Tribune (via KNBR) 15 minutes ago was correct. I take it as very good news. Got the bridge QB that knows the system. Let Allen and Snyder sweat.

      1. Unless they’re willing to lose in a Cousins deal, I don’t see him on the team until next year. Perhaps not even then if we’re drafting top 10, and see a viable franchise quarterback to draft….

    2. I wonder if that means they’re going to chase Cousins next year, and keep our #2, instead of trying to trade for him this year?

Former #Bears QB Brian Hoyer had the #Jets & #49ers as options. But Kyle Shanahan is a big draw when it comes to free agents.

  7. Adam Caplan‏Verified account @caplannfl 2m2 minutes ago

Sources: Brian Hoyer is expected to sign a multi-year deal with the #49ers once it’s finalized tomorrow.

  8. Hmmm…..

It’s a 2-year deal for #49ers and QB Brian Hoyer. Fair to say, this makes it unlikely they bring in Kirk Cousins in a trade with #Redskins

    1. Because they give the Bears back up QB a two year deal we no longer are going after Cousins? M’kay.

      1. Think about it.

        1. We’re not ready to be competitive.
        2. We need a bridge QB.
        3. We have the #2 pick and trading for Cousins will cost us that AND almost certainly another #1 next year seeing as how the market was set in the Bradford (journeyman QB) trade last year.
        4. Cousins is a FA in 2018.
        5. Sign Cousins in 2018 for FREE without mortgaging the future by giving up a couple of high #1’s.

The way I see it, the difference between Hoyer and Cousins, considering all the issues, isn’t likely to be dropping us out of Superbowl contention anytime soon. It might be, all things considered, a zero win difference.

        1. FWIW, I’m not staying that’s what’s going to happen or not. I”m just pointing out that there are many ways to read what the signing means. I could, very logically, mean no Cousins trade and a FA pursuit last year. It could mean they’re just stocking the roster. It could mean they’re coppering their wagers as they go through FA and the draft and try to get what they’re looking for.

        1. Meant for CFC’s doubt and in support of MosesZD’s analysis. It also leaves open the possibility of a higher potential QB in next years draft.

    2. It all comes down to whether the Redskins want to receive more than a compensatory 3rd round pick. If they are stubborn and hold out for a first round pick or more, then Cousins is probably a Redskin for another season. I think all the rumors have come because most probably feel the Redskins ultimately will realize getting something this year is better than having a lame duck QB who is leaving once the season ends, but with Snyder you just never know.

More #49ers news: #Bills WR Marquise Goodwin is headed to the #49ers. Kyle Shanahan loves speed.

    1. If true I really like this one. Goodwin is just starting to develop an NFL caliber game and has fantastic speed. Good addition if it happens.

      1. Excellent addition and it’s for real. Marquis had 29 catches last year and has never had a coach like Shanny to help elevate his game. These are really some fantastic moves by the new BrainTrust!

  10. I just read that Hoyer is signing for $6 million year. ‘Decent’ back-up QB money.

  11. With Martin being cut and Hoyer being signed does anyone know how much cap space the Niners have now?

    1. The actual cap space is always confusing. For the foreseeable future it’s going to be all over the place. Not to worry, it’s in the best hands since the Yorks butted in.

    1. They don’t need too now. They can wait and fill out the rest of the roster. These guys are smart and are not going to make any drastic moves.

  12. Just to not see Kapernick on the 49ers will be the ultimate joy for me. That’s the only thing left, get Kap OUT of the Bay area altogether. No more no. 7s for the QBs! Make the new QB wear a no. 3 jersey.

  13. I’ve been exploring for a bit for any high quality articles or weblog
posts in this kind of house . Exploring in Yahoo I ultimately stumbled upon this site.
Reading this info So i am satisfied to convey that I’ve an incredibly excellent uncanny feeling I found out just what I needed.
I most unquestionably will make certain to do not omit this website and give it a look on a constant basis.
