49ers draft report card and updated depth chart

SANTA CLARA

Here are my grades for the 49ers’ 10 draft picks.

Round 1, pick No. 3: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford. The third interior pass rusher the 49ers have drafted in the first round the past three years. Strange. A defense can’t play more than two interior rushers at a time. At least the 49ers traded down for Thomas and picked up an extra third-round pick for 2018. Grade: C.

Round 1, pick No. 31: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama. Would have been an “A” pick if Foster hadn’t had rotator-cuff surgery in February, failed a drug test at the Combine and invited a tobacco- and marijuana-vaporizer producer to host his draft party Thursday night. Seems like the type of person who may not last long in the NFL, a la Aldon Smith. Grade: C-minus.

Round 3, pick No. 66: Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado. The 49ers had an obvious need for a starting cornerback after they released Tramaine Brock. But they didn’t get a starting corner. They got Witherspoon, who probably won’t play as a rookie because he’s a horrendous tackler. The 49ers should have traded up for a better corner, such as Chidobe Awuzie, who played with Witherspoon at Colorado. Grade: B-minus.

Round 3, pick No. 104: C.J. Beathard, QB, Iowa. Who trades up in the third round for a backup quarterback? The 49ers, apparently. Beathard has zero “wow” traits, meaning the ball doesn’t explode out of his hand and he doesn’t throw with good trajectory. That’s why he completed less than 30 percent of passes that traveled more than 20 yards the past two seasons. He is what you call a JAG — just a guy. Grade: F.

Round 4, pick No. 121: Joe Williams, RB, Utah. The most explosive running back in the draft. Williams fell to the fourth round because teams were concerned he may not love football after retiring briefly last season. But the 49ers must not feel concerned. I expect Williams will take Carlos Hyde’s starting job at some point next season. Grade: A-plus.

Round 5, pick No. 146: George Kittle, TE, Iowa. A better blocker and a faster runner with better hands than Vance McDonald, whom the 49ers reportedly want to trade. Kittle is a big upgrade. Grade: A.

Round 5, pick No. 177: Trent Taylor, WR, Louisiana Tech. A highly-productive slot receiver in college, although I doubt that’s why the Niners drafted him. They needed a punt returner,  and Taylor is a decent one. But the Niners could have drafted an excellent one (Isaiah McKenzie) had they traded up just six spots. I bet they regret missing out on McKenzie. Grade: C.

Round 6, pick No. 198: D.J. Jones, NT, Ole Miss. An athletic run defender who doesn’t fill a major need, but probably is an upgrade over Mike Purcell as the 49ers backup nose tackle.  Grade: B.

Round 6, pick No. 202: Pita Taumoepenu, DE, Utah. A small pass-rusher who has long odds to make the final roster. The 49ers should have included this pick in a package to trade up for Chidobe Awuzie in Round 2. Grade: D.

Round 7, pick No. 229: Adrian Colbert, CB/S, Miami. The 49ers needed another defensive back but Colbert may not be talented or durable enough to make the team. The Niners should have included this pick in package to trade up for Isaiah McKenzie in Round 5. Grade: D.

    1. Here is the Great Lowell Cohns take on drafting Thomas.

“9ers traded down, got thomas who they needed and two more picks. exactly the right thing to do. they need players galore. obvious move.”

        1. Before or after daddy Lowell spanks his baby boy Grant for going against his family, just like in The Godfather II when Fredo went against his brother Michael by siding with Moe Green.

      1. Lowell knows football Grant doesn’t. I didn’t think he even likes watching the sport. He refuses to even learn the defense.

He still thinks we run a 4-3 OVER and he doesn’t even know the roles of the defense putting SAM and Leo together. The SAM has run stopping/edge setting role and the Leo is a pure pass rusher. Both of these positions play at the same time so how could 1 player play that role at the same time without playing on 10 men? SMH dude you need to be fired.

        1. We have been through this before, and I agree with Grant.

Also, we will be seeing the Niners employ a hybrid defense which can seamlessly switch from one to the other, especially when the other team’s offense calls an audible, makes a shift or puts a man in motion.

Pete Carroll himself they used a 4-3 over, but he also said it depends on where the other teams’ offense lines up.

Glad this new Niner defense will not be static, and inflexible.

      2. Apparently math is not the strong suit in the Cohn household, both of them got it wrong. They got three picks in that trade.

    2. Of Course Grant’s opinions are unbiased and based upon a superior knowledge considering his experience in the sport. Along those lines don’t you think that KS and Lynch should have consulted him on every pick? After all he does profess to be a talent guru.

  1. They got the best defensive lineman in the draft and the best linebacker in the draft, plus extra draft picks, and you give them a C? 2 of the 3 top prospects on their big board, plus ammo to get their franchise quarterback next year is unprecedented! It’s spectacular! You’d think you’d give the Beathard pick an A just like you did with Williams, because he was your pick too!

      1. Hence why he was bacially drafted in the 4th…I thought we had a great draft, figured you’d try and crap on it. Why I come in here to even read it is beyond me.

      2. You just don’t know. Everyone thought Cousins and Prescott would be career back ups. This guy is very similar to Cousins coming out of MSU… Your prolly right but good bsck ups are valuable.

        1. Joe Montana was also heavily criticized coming out of college and fell to third round, and what he accomplished. And there are many names I can add to that list, i.e Brett Favre, Tom Brady etc

        2. No one thought Barkley would make a really good backup in the NFL. He can be a pretty good starter one day if he puts it all together. Remember when he picked us apart in the snow last year?

      3. I will take Shanahans opinion over yours any day. CJ is extremely confident, accurate, a leader, process quickly in pocket under pressure, and comes from a pro style offense. His words!!! Your grades are pathetic. S. Thomas gets an A. Can play both inside and outside.

        1. He also has a strong arm and some mobility in the pocket. His throws at the combine were actually looking pretty good.

      4. Makes sense to draft a backup QB who needs the least amount of hand holding going into the OTA’s. The 49ers had to have a 3rd QB and if Hoyer or Barkley get hurt, knock on wood, it’s good to have a 3rd stringer who’s at least competent when it comes to understanding the pro system, and isn’t going to require constant hand holding with so many other aspects of the offense that need attention.

This draft screams Kurt Cousins is coming in 2018 (or sooner) OR the 49ers are planning a big draft move for one of next years top prospects, which looks a bit more promising. Perhaps Rudolph, or Darnold?

        1. Josh Allen expected to be #1 pick next year. Scouts believe he is Andrew Luck rare.

          1. Depends who you read Sporting news has him the 5th best 2018 prospect and yet only the third best QB with Darnold & Rosen ahead of him and the Heisman trophy winning Jackson behind him.

              1. The thing I don’t like about Jake is how bad he looks against a stout defense. His OL keeps him clean against most of the Pac-12 teams, but things went south with him against the USC and Bama pass rush. He gets rattled when he’s being pressured.

              2. It will depend on the talent surrounding him, but what I like about JB is his accuracy.

        2. By the way, Kaaya’s drop was absolutely no surprise to me. That Cj Beathard went well before Kaaya, also not a surprise.

And the 49ers are early winners of the most important round in the draft, round 1, and by a substantial margin IMO. John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and Paraag Marathe have served notice, and should be smiling from ear to ear!

Here’s my 49ers 2017 draft recap, with grades:

SOLOMON THOMAS & RUEBEN FOSTER (my second favorite player in the draft, just ahead of C. Davis), ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This was a WOW first round, and then when you consider they landed 2 additional 3rd round picks and a 4th on top of that haul? Wow turns into WOWZA!!!!! Unreal! A++ first round grade!

CB AHKELLO WITHERSPOON is a B+ based on fit. He needs to learn how to tackle, but then again, so did Sherman.

Pro Football Focus: Witherspoon player comparison: RICHARD SHERMAN, Seattle Seahawks.

“While it is a bit cliche to compare big corners to Richard Sherman, the comparison is fair in this case. The two players have similar physical profiles and skill-sets, and Witherspoon would thrive in the same role as Sherman, even though it’s unfair to expect the kind of career and production.”

He’s a confident kid, and so is the similar Rashard Robinson, let’s just hope Ahkello’s mouth isn’t as big as Sherman’s.

RB JOE WILLIAMS is a phenom. This pick is an A+ for me! He has the best balance of any RB I’ve ever scouted, and keeps runs alive after contact like no other. His 4.41 40 might be slower than what he’s actually capable of, and that’s a well put together 210 lbs RB, with burst and vision! LOVE THAT PICK! And I hope Hyde can stay healthy because that’s a duo that fit together like bread and butter, in a DYNAMIC complimentary way. And even Hightower / Willaims is still impressive because it sounds like Hightower has freshened up and has more tread left on his tires.

TE GEORGE KITTLE get’s an A- grade for me simply because you don’t find many 4.52 “move” TE’s who have made a science out of blocking. His blocking technique is so good, PFF projected him as the nations best TE prospect heading into last season. He’s a converted WR and has 1 career dropped pass, so he appears to have exceptional hands. No mystery why Vance McDonald has found himself on the trading block.

QB CJ BEATHARD’s grade = Incomplete. If Kyle thinks he makes sense, then he’s got my early endorsement, but I’m not yet ready to grade him as a pick yet.

Slot Receiver/kick returner TRENT TAYLOR has been compared to Wes Welker, of course. Sounds a little over ambitious.

Considering that the 49ers need more depth behind my boy J. Kerley in the slot thanks to B. Ellington, who appears to be made out of balsa wood and glass (I couldn’t believe he’s sat out Shanny’s first mini-camp with a “soft tissue injury”), I’m giving the Taylor pick a B-, simply due to the size/speed ratio. I always worry when a guy is small AND slower than you would expect for a little guy. However, playing the slot is not all about top end speed, and he sure was productive in college, so I can’t go lower than a B-, and if he’s anything close to the next Wes Welker, he’ll make the team better.

NT (1T) DJ JONES could be the next Ian Williams, and if it means the end of M. Purcell, I’m giving this pick a B. Jones has rare short area quickness for a squatty player of his size and girth, and he’s a strong kid, with a classic build for a NT. The 49ers will need to keep him fresh as he clearly wore down as the 2016 season went along.

PITA TAUMOEPENU is an interesting prospect because he’s a bit of a hybrid SAM, DE and is certainly an ascending, explosive kid. Perhaps he’s a candidate to transition to MIKE, although that would be a tall task. He’s raw, and hard to figure exactly where he fits so unfortunately I am giving this pick a C, as he could excel as a core ST player. We’ll see.

DB ADRIAN COLBERT reportedly ran a 4.39 40, and he can hit like a ton of bricks. He’s got qualities to play either CB or FS, but he hasn’t stood out at either position. However, based on need, the pick makes sense to me, so I give it a solid B based on potential as a FS and ST’s ace. Hard to get worked up either way as a 7th round pick.

          1. OK, I just remembered they used the 4th round pick acquired from the Bears trade to move up back into the first to select Foster. So I should have said 2 additional 3rd round picks on top of Thomas and Foster. Still unbelievable! .

          2. Good take on all the above less Beathard. If he had his 2015 season he goes as one of the top three QB’s in the draft. Most wins by QB in Iowa history. The grades on Thomas and Foster (C and C-) are laughable.. Two great athletes. Thomas can play inside outside, stuff and pressure.. Foster has no holes in his game. To assign Foster a C- well you either have no capacity for recognizing or assessing talent or football is just not your sport..

        3. When trey rings interviewed lynch yesterday,” he said , you(lupynch and the niners did not draft a quarterback” after they had taken bethard funny he is being labeled a back up all ready at best, I think is ceiling is cousins which he has flaws too but is much better then what they have now or the last few years. Give it time and trust the process. Let’s go C.J.!

      5. That’s why he was drafted 104th. I mean, it’s kind of a ‘duh!’ thing. He’ll be around for four years as the back-up, a couple of years longer than Barkley & Hoyer.

And while I would have preferred Peterman, instead of throwing a tantrum like you and some others about where he was drafted, I put myself in the organization’s shoes and thought about why Shanahan took him earlier than the so-called ‘experts’ (most of whom completely suck) thought he should have. The exercise in trying to understand wasn’t difficult.

First, next year, with a better QB class, they can draft someone (Darnold, Rosen, Allen & Jackson are all provisionally rated Top-10). Or maybe they sign Cousins. Or Garoppolo. Who’ll also be a FA. And they don’t need controversy and challenge in those early goings.

Second, they need a long-term back-up who’ll be serviceable and won’t require the huge investment in coaching that a spread-offense back-up would need. They also need someone who is a film rat and will prepare like every game is the Superbowl.

Beathard is a perfect fit. He’s no real challenge to a high-pick potential starter. He’s a film-rat. He’s a high IQ (playbook) player. He comes from a pro-set offense. He has a tremendous work ethic. He has decent enough pocket skills that they only need refinement instead of being constructed from the ground-up. He’s also likely to be a career back-up and can stick around, kind of like the old Elway-Kubiak relationship in Denver.

(Kubiak was selected in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, the same year quarterback John Elway was drafted. Kubiak played his entire nine-season career for the Broncos as a backup for Elway.)

And, who knows, maybe he puts on the greatest show since Achilles slew Hector and he becomes a Jeff Garcia or Dak Prescott or some such.

But you did none of that. You threw a tantrum and gave someone who knows so much more than you an F.

            1. I would have given the Beathard pick a much higher grade had it come in the eighth round.

              1. Grant,
I will talk to you in a couple of years and I believe you will agree with me when I say it was a great pick in any round. I think he will be the surprise QB of the 2017 draft. I know I’m out there on a limb by my self for the most part but this guy is going to be special. imho

          1. But he was the 197th pick which would put him in the 6th round of this draft. Right before DJ Jones would have been drafted.

All in all it wasn’t an impressive pick but your a bit over the top on your criticism too. We have to wait and see if he is as bad as you say. If he is, it will be an indictment on the regime.

      6. You seem like the guy that doesn’t care what people think or what people who are in a higher position than you think because you give Reuben Foster who is more likely than not the next Patrick Willis or Ray Lewis and Solomon Thomas one of the best athletic edge and pass rusher in the whole draft class C grades?! I guess you would of rather have Leonard Fournette or Christian McCaffrey because you have no idea how an NFL team wins a Super Bowl! DEFENSE!! You ask Reuben as well why he had a vaporizer company as his sponsor for his draft party like he is smoking weed every day. Vapes or Vaporizers are not just for smoking weed lmao and they probably offered him a lot of money. Why not take that check to the bank and who cares if it is a vaporizing company, not like he was vaping when he was sitting at the couch or smoking weed lmao.

      7. Well, a lot of people said the same thing about Tom Brady when he was drafted into the league. He and beathard almost had identical stats their last two seasons in college.

That being said I preferred Peterman at that spot. But I’ll trust in shanahans views of a qb who he thinks can run his offense.

      8. That is the only one I think you graded right in the first 4. Yet, with such a similar skill set to Cousins and Shanahan coaching him, he could develop into a good starter. You are laughably wrong about ST and RF. Hysterically off. One, we got a boatload and picks and one of the Top 5 players in the draft. Two, steal of the draft. A for sure Top 10 possibly Top 5 pick if it weren’t for those stupid reasons GMs regret later. I may be proven wrong and they may bust but the way I see it, our front 7 will be one of the best if not the best in football by 2019. Everything is up in the air until we hit the field, patience is the key. Brick by Brick. But on paper, this draft is one of the Niners best since I’ve been a fan.

    1. Although one could take issue with some of the draft the first pick I rate as a solid A plus with the trade and if Foster keeps his nose clean and heals completely,a like grade -given it would be a complete steal.

  2. Grant,

I’d like to compliment you for mocking QB, Bethard, to the 49ers.

I to hit on some of my picks, mainly, my 1st rounder, Solomon Thomas.

Unfortunately, Seb did not quite make the cut as his 1st rounder predictably wasn’t chosen by the 49ers.

Perhajps Seb can be a 2nd stringer or follow his bad predictions, with Kap, into Canada for employment.

    1. TrollD, you did not have the guts to make a mock, and I was looking for it so I could rip it apart.

BTW, I had mocked King Solomon in at least 15 mocks, but was resigned to missing out on him, especially if the Niners traded back.

      1. We knew you’d refer to one of your thousands of mocks to justify any misses.
        It doesn’t matter. Nobody cares.

          1. It takes real guts to post thousands of pages of mocks. You’re right we tremble before your might.

        1. King Solomon was known for his wisdom, so it is praise, not a pejorative.

This is also a blog site, I am not addressing him in person.

        2. And A to the F is just dripping with imagination and wit. Fun suckers just called and they want their ambassador back….

  3. Lol Chad Kelly be Mr. Irrelevant couldn’t be more fitting. Kaaya falling to the end of the 6th also feels right. Didn’t like either of them and apparently the league doesn’t think much of them either.

  4. I understand the low grades for Thomas and Foster, but end of the day those two players have great potential and could be real difference makers on the front 7. I look forward to seeing how they use Thomas, Buckner and Armstead. I expect they will be used in a variety of ways.

    1. Scooter how do you understand the low grades for the first two picks! Both Thomas and Foster were rated as the top five guys available in this draft by many draft experts.

    1. They did and Hue could potentially turn Kizer into a good QB which is the key to their draft.

        1. I don’t know about the rest of you, but it does trouble me conceptually that many say that the Browns and the 49ers did so well in the draft. The comparison to a perennially poor performing franchise is deeply troubling.

          1. Think 80 or 81 when the bengals and 49ers turned it around, we like then ares o used to the same stupid repeated mistakes we just think the browns or York owned niners will screw things up. Good plans and people seem to be in both organizations. Browns vs niners in the super bowl in three years? Now that would be funny! Hope we win!

              1. Yes but bad ownership will derail ambitions and good people (Harbaugh).

                I’m still skeptical…

    2. Yes and no. While Myles Garrett looks like the real deal, something tells me he might be overrated. You have to wonder why a guy with his athletic qualities combined with good technique didn’t simply dominate and take over more games. Is he a guy who loves football and will fully commit? We’ll see.

I’m not as sold on Jabrill Peppers as some are. He’s a physical freak, but is he a really good football player who’s a good fit anywhere on defense? Too small for LB and might not have the change of direction qualities to play SS. He’s a boom or bust prospect, IMO.

      D. Njoku is another boom or bust player, for sure. Athletic, long striding, red zone weapon, but he’s got questionable hands for sure (he’s simply not a natural pass catcher), and he didn’t blow up the combine like I thought he would as his 4.64 40 was much slower than I expected. looks more like a mid to late second round prospect to me, but he could work to become a better pass catcher.

I think DeShone has a high ceiling for a QB, but he’s a project, and I’m just not sure he’ll reach his potential on the Cleveland Browns.

      1. EC 9er

IMHO…I believe that Manziel came in with all of the weaponry needed to be successful in the NFL….he just brought a couple of un-needed, unwanted extras to the party….could still be relevant in the right system with the right coach….Kizer..?? Kaepernick 2.0….

  5. Thx Cassie,

    Darryl Williams, OT, 6’5″ 327LBS.
    Analysis

Strengths Physical at the point of attack. Comes off snap with bad intentions and rolls hips under him to drive defender off the ball. Tough guy who leads by example on the field. Works to the whistle and enjoys the one-on-one run-game scraps. Competes as a pass blocker. Sees and reacts well to twists. Has power in his hands. Buries defenders on down blocks. Outstanding football character and overall work ethic.

  6. You are about the only one I’ve read who has a take like this on the Niner draft Grant. They are getting positive reviews across the board for what they did and they should.

The second best interior DL in the draft (I think Allen was the best personally), who is excellent against the run. Will also be used outside in base most likely which will allow them to get all 3 first round picks on the field at the same time.

Foster is the steal of the draft. Shoulder or not, this was a top 5 talent they got in the bottom of the first and unless he never plays a down, this was a great pick.

Witherspoon is a lot better than you are portraying imo and will be a starter possibly as soon as this coming season. Needs to improve his tackling but he is a very good cover corner.

Joe Williams and George Kittle were strong picks I agree.

DJ Jones was good value and fills a need.

The final two players are likely destined for the PS at best for development. Grading picks that late is impossible because you literally have a couple of hundred players who are ranked in the same tier and all have flaws.

The two picks I liked the least were Beathard and Taylor. Taylor doesn’t seem to have a spot looking at things right now and isn’t overly impressive. Beathard was a late round pick in my mind but as I said earlier, I will defer to the HC on this one. He knows what he wants a lot more than I do.

Add in the fact they acquired 2018 2nd and 3rd round picks in trades and this was an excellent first draft for Lynch and Shanahan.

    1. I think that Grant is getting exactly the reaction that Grant and his coach want. He’s working the plan perfectly in a “hit or miss-out” world.

  7. Pick 66 Grade B+ Team

49ers select: Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado
John Lynch continues to get good players. They need cover player and this kid can handle it.

  8. DJ Jones Analysis:

    Analysis

Strengths Has a big bubble and plays with a wide base. Outrageous weight room strength with monster numbers in clean, bench, and squat. Plays low and fires upward strikes to elevate the blocker’s center of gravity. Has the play strength to rip through an edge once he gets to it. Has quick hands and is nice with the swim move. Has necessary play traits to be an effective rusher in the twist game. Rare reactive athleticism and short-area lateral quickness for an interior player. Extended tackle radius allows him to close out running lanes away from his gap. Keeps hounding runners down the field for the tackle. Instinctive and quickly sniffs out screen passes. Very rarely on ground

  9. Your a god damn hater grant…stop writing bs just to get responses thats not good journalism

    1. Dude, if he didn’t write here, he’d be writing a Tumblr blog. At least he can make some money doing this. And, every now and then, he actually digs down and does some good work that you never see the other sports writers do.

      Mostly though, it’s Tumblr-in-Action.

  10. Why did anyone continue reading Grant Nepohn after he argued for months in his blog that Jim Tomsula could do as good a job as Harbaugh? The guy is an idiot and cretinous pile. I clicked on this article by accident and it’s quite clear not much has change in 3 years. Move on people. Nothing to see here.

    1. ‘The guy is an idiot and a cretinous pile’.

Then you ‘accidently’ clicked on this site.

I think you just described yourself.

  11. lol Grant! A c for our two first picks. Well everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will hope you are wrong with your assessment. Go Niners

  12. Thomas A
Great trade. This would get an A+ if he didn’t have minor concerns (nit picking).
    Foster A
Injury and character concerns but we got the best LB in the draft at 31.
    Witherspoon A+
A potential shut down corner in the 3rd.
    Beathard C-
I trust Shanny but they probably reached.
    Williams A-
    He’ll push Hyde.
    Kittle A-
A Shanny guy. I like his hands and blocking.

    1. 80,
I like Joe Williams – but what I would really like is drafting his O-line. Williams was completely untouched in some of the highlights I saw of him.

      1. I’m a little surprised we didn’t draft a zone blocking O lineman, but it wasn’t a deep class. Staley will be fine. Getting Zuttah for almost nothing was one of the best moves of the off season. Garnett was a high pick and needs to step up. He’ll be healthy going into camp, so I’m hopeful.

I think our D will be Top 10-15 with the addition of Thomas, Foster, and Witherspoon and a seemingly healthy Bowman. The offense will do enough to get us a 12-4 record.

        1. Totally agree #80. Fun to see a real plan in action even if all the moves do not make sense right now. Let’s give it time and see what happens!

        2. 80, 12-4 wow! That is optimistic! You base it on a rookie coach and a bunch FA signings and some draft choices?

This team resembles a brand new franchise right now more than an established team (personnel wise) see how well new teams do out of the gate and they have great drafts and sometimes wonderful FA acquisions. I do not see the record improving immensely.

  13. I almost completely agree with the grades except Foster. I’d bump the Foster grade to a B. Preliminary overall grade of a C.

    1. Heath Evans ripped Ryan Pace for Trubiscuit, and thought the 49ers had an A+ draft.

  14. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Lowell Cohn was an insufferable idiot for all those years, and now his son follows in those footsteps. Some kids learn from their father’s failings; Grant, not so much. I give him a D-.

    1. While I was incensed over what Lowell wrote, I read every word. I have now come to realize that it was a subtle form of psychology to make Walsh, and the Niners, more incentive to prove him wrong. And his ploy worked splendidly.

Personally, I think Grant is a chip off the old block.

  15. I must admit, both 3rd round picks were head scratchers . They could have traded up for jU JU. I am surprised they did not draft a Guard. I give the overall draft a B. Day 1 was an A. Day 3 was a B+. Day 2 was a C minus which is me being optimistic.

    1. Don’t forget that the Foster pick was made possible in part by trading the 49ers’ 2nd round pick. So, in effect, Foster was a day two pick, at least partially.

  16. Grant:

Lynch is well aware of what is being said about Witherspoon. I’ll post again what I posted in the previous thread:

    cubus
    April 29, 2017 at 3:18 pm
Lynch also said that they understand the concern about Ahkello Witherspoon’s lack of physicality. He also mentioned that a lot of people were surprised that a guy like him (Lynch) would draft a DB not known for his physicality. But Lynch said they are going to demand it and he expects Ahkello’s teammates will as well.”

    1. “But Lynch said they are going to demand it and he expects Ahkello’s teammates will as well”

Oh well they’re going to demand it, huh? Phew, solves that problem.

  17. This whole offseason with FA & this draft is a solid A. They got guys that fit Shannys system to get the program rolling in year one. The way they attracted players like Garcone in FA & used their Denver relationships to grab an extra RB today was excellent. They got two extra picks for early in next years draft and didn’t draft any ACL projects. Further they got 2 of their top 3 players on their entire board. It’s a great start understanding that this is a true rebuilding period. Props to Lynch for taking a risk on Foster and manipulating Seattle to gain that spot!

    1. GM’s were salivating at the thought of taking advantage of an inexperienced Lynch, but he acquitted himself like a real draft ninja!

      1. But don’t forget, Seb says Lynch followed 7 of his (Seb’s) 10 draft commandments…

        1. He broke three. I wonder how long Seb will have him wandering Silicon Valley?;>)

          1. No, actually he accomplished 9. Avoiding drafting red flags and avoiding ACL players still had to unfold in the draft. Did not see any, and if so, they are way down in the draft, so the Niners were shrewd and smart.

            1. I guess this spells the end for all those Kap lovers!
Or maybe you still think they would bring him back!
              Cmon Seb, make me laugh!

              1. I can’t speak for Seb, as if he needed a spokesman, but you are a bore on both the Seb and Kaepernick topics.

              2. Prime, when you parrot me, you look sad a feeble.

Guess the Niners did not draft Trubisky, so you lost your bet.

BTW, how many did you get right?

            2. At least we don’t have to hear about the ridiculous notion of drafting Trubiscuit, and having our “franchise” quarterback for the next 10 years anymore. And since I’ll never see a red cent of our bet, that will have to do….

    2. Good post, Bandit….

I think that this blog is fast becoming a “bitch at anything moving” site. WADDAYA’ WANT ? We picked up 5 quality FA’s, traded for two more, had a great draft, picked up players to fill our vacancies, and dynamited the UDFA for 15 potential players (not just back-ups) and then the sniping and nit-picking begins….These are GOOD ballplayers…John Lynch did his due diligence on all of them…yeah, I disagree with a couple of them, but I don’t believe that anyone else did better…Kudos Lynch…Kudos Shannahan…and Kudos scouting staff. As I have for the last 60 some years, I’ll wipe my bloody nose and prepare for the next Super Bowl GO NINERS !!

  18. Grant I guarantee you are the only one grading Foster anything below and A-. I get your concerns but this was better than the Myles Jack pick last year. Who didn’t have Foster in the top 10?

    What’s your overall Grant?

    1. If someone were to tell you that we’d get Thomas and Foster, you’d swear it was Seb. If my math is right, Grant’s overall grade would seem to be a D+/C-.

      1. Grants logic:

They didn’t follow my plan to a T, they must have no valid plan of your own. You fail in every way in not only this draft but at life. Everyone in here is now dumber for having witnessed this draft.

        F-

        1. They’re all like that to a greater or lesser extent. None of them ever try to put themselves in the shoes of the organization and think beyond ‘this year.’

I have serous doubts Beathard was drafted to be ‘the QB of the future.’ I think he was drafted to be the 49ers Kubiak. A career back-up who played 9 years behind John Elway. Only, there were no John Elway’s in this draft.

But next year is a QB prospect bonanza. Plus Cousins and Garoppolo will both be FAs. Add in Hoyer & Barkley are temporary guys. It kind of makes sense to get a back-up and work him up. And someone like Beathard has a lot of things you’d want in a back-up.

            1. Scooter,
Based on positional value, a career backup QB drafted after the first 100 picks is actually awesome. Sometime I ago I was very surprised to see data on home many teams finished the season with a starting QB different from the one they started with in September with the change ascribed to injuries. Unless you subscribe to the Singletarian view that the QB is just another player, the backup is far more important a position than say, a serviceable starting LB or DB.

              1. Prior to the draft if anyone suggested Beathard as a 3rd round pick for the 49ers they would have been laughed at. Now that it has happened most here are looking for creative ways to rationalise the pick. Kudos to you, but lets be honest, at face value it looks a reach.

      2. Good thing Lynch didn’t take Foster at #2, we’d really have heard about it!
        ; -)

  19. Cassie,

Did you check to see if Jimmie Gilbert has quick hips ?

I know another poster who would slam his morning sports page draft coverage into his bowl of Wheaties w/o this info.

  20. Every NFL expert gave the 49ers an A on the first day. You know, people actually affiliated with NFL reporting…

This is why you’re a two-bit reporter relegated to a Northern California newspaper in a city of less than 200,000. You can’t separate your bias from actual reporting.

    Sad, really.

      1. You did that solely so you can subsequently rip them for “not living up to expectations.”

      2. I don’t think Grant is being biased. It does seem like sometimes he thinks there can be only one right answer and he knows what it is. Therefore it comes across as those who disagree are wasting their time. That’s just my impression.

    1. Back off, Grant gave his honest opinion, and I can see his logic.

Thomas was duplicative, and not as solid as Garrett. If Foster has a long rehab, he may not contribute much this year.

Still, I am jumping for joy because they spent their first 3 picks on the defense, and getting those players gave good depth with starter possibilities.

Grant may not write for the SF Chron, but newspapers are dying out so blogs may become more important.

I come to this site just because of Grant. He does not sugar coat things and can focus on what is important. I put up with the peanut gallery because they cannot touch me. I made some pretty good calls, so I will fling the fact that I predicted that the Niners would garner a second and third round pick. Maybe Grant also likes my posts and will put up with my imaginative writing.

Go somewhere else if you cannot comprehend this site. I have made it a point to defend Grant, and you bring nothing but drivel and snark.

        1. Mason denigrated the Press Democrat and I just wished to point out a sad reality that the big papers are in real trouble, and only the local papers will survive because they cover local issues.

      1. “Go somewhere else if you cannot comprehend this site.” Dude, we’re talking about football, not the films of Ingmar Bergman. Go somewhere else if you can’t take an opinion that differs from your own.

        1. Dave, you are the one bringing up the Bergman films. I have been talking exclusively about this draft. I would kindly have you suggest to all the posters who are intolerant of different opinions, to listen to what you say.

I was mainly responding to Mason, who likes to hit and run.

Typical troll tactic, to viciously attack then disappear.

          1. “It’s so horrible to see your own confusion and understand it!”
            – Through the Glass Darkly

      2. GArrett takes plays off. Players that do that in college frequently end up as your Chester McGlockton’s and Aundray Bruce’s.

One of the best things that happened was Garrett not dropping. He may end up great. But I’d never want a guy who doesn’t play with heart on my team. And guys that just ****ing stand there because the play is going the other way and, by the lack of pursuit, ended making the play worse…

I mean that tape of him just lolly-gagging around. I have say, while I think Sapp is (generally speaking) an idiot. I think he got that right.

        1. Still all hurt that your daddy was fired, and John Lynch showed how a real GM performs?

Do not worry, I will bring up the fact that I advocating for trading up, every chance I get, especially with you.

  21. Jimmie Gilbert…human slinky…

Athletic, long-levered rusher who understands how to administer his length. Often able to land first punch and keep himself clean against tackles when setting edge. Can range as tackler. Fluid when asked to drop into space. Fires into pass rush with rare stride length to challenge the edge. Uses effective arm over on inside moves. Has foot quickness to shoot gaps. Human slinky with exceptional flexibility in hips and upper body to flip around the edge of blockers. Big closing burst to quarterback. Keeps feet moving through a tackle’s initial punch. Strip-sack specialist looks to attack throwing arm when possible. Forced six fumbles this year alone. Athletic bloodlines with family full of college basketball players.

  22. Matt Maiocco @MaioccoNBCS

Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens says he will be coming to #49ers. He’ll be the fourth QB on the roster behind Hoyer, Barkley and Beathard.

    1. Capable in controlled passing attack with tight release. Throws with quality touch. Exceptional toughness. Had training staff “push the bone back in” and stitch up a compound fracture in his thumb against Texas-San Antonio so he could finish the game.

I think it’s safe to assume we know that toughness is one of the prerequisites of Shanny when it comes to quarterback….

      1. A draft publication gave Bethard an average grade, saying that Shanahan drafted him as a backup.

Solid backups can not be underestimated in the NFL (Not For Long) league.

        1. I thought that was fairly obvious. He’s got all the qualities you want in a back-up, plus he comes from a pro-style offense so it won’t take two or three years to train him up to be a competent back-up for the QB of the Future.

  23. Grant, keep giving your opinions. You provide excellent insights. It will be a challenge to find the right way to use Thomas and real question marks for Foster. I trust Lynch and Shanahan did their due diligence. The reward with these two top picks could be very high. On the field, both Thomas and Foster had the “it” factor for their teams in college. Keep in mind that Beathard lost his best receiver to injury early in 2016 and the rest of Iowa’s receivers had trouble getting separation. Also, Iowa’s OC and QB coach were fired, which probably means they weren’t good at their jobs and Beathard had to work under them. I agree that they should have traded up higher to get a better WR. I saw a short video on pick #7, Colbert. He gave some hard hits to Notre Dame receivers in the clip.

  24. Erik Magnuson, OT, Michigan–Harb’s University !

    Analysis

Strengths Has starting experience at both guard and tackle. Solid athlete with loose hips and good lateral movement. Average feet but a clean, smooth kick slide. Understands his angles as a zone blocker and will give ground to gain ground on his cut-blocks. Patient on reach blocks and waits until feet are in position before locking up. Can adjust in space to connect with moving targets. Dependable in space. Decent block engagement. Operates with capable mirroring ability in pass protection. Has the balance and footwork necessary to redirect his weight back inside against stunts and counter moves.

  25. “The 49ers should have included this pick in a package to trade up for Chidobe Awuzie in Round 2.”

We tried to trade Vance and it didn’t work out. We don’t know if they tried to trade back into the 2nd. They were aggressive so they might have tried it.

  26. Early predictions for the 49ers season:

    – 49ers will have two RBs with 600+ yards rushing and 5+ TDs.
    – 49ers top receivers (catches) will be Garcon, Kerley and Juszczyk, all with over 50 catches but none with more than 70.
    – No one receiver will have more than 6 TD receptions.
    – 49ers leading tacklers will be Bowman, Reid and Foster, each with over 80 tackles.
    – 49ers INT leader will be Foster, followed by Ward.
    – 49ers sack leader will be Buckner, followed by Thomas and Brooks. Each will have 6+ sacks, but nobody will have 10 or more.
    – 49ers will start 3 QBs during the season. No QB will exceed a TD to INT ratio of 1.5 to 1.

    1. -Doubt that more than one RB eclipses 600
-I can see Garçon and Kerley having 50 catches but doubt that Juszczyk gets there.
-Agree on TD less than or equal 6 for receivers
-Bowman and Reid leading tacklers. Not Foster. His health/off field questions will be an issue.
-A DB will lead in INTs if not it will be 3 or less
      – I can see Armstead and Buckner as sack leaders more than I can see Thomas and Brooks as being in that category.
      – Let’s hope not 3 QBs starting because it would mean a disastrous season.

      1. My reasoning is:
        – Shanahan doesn’t mind splitting carries and Hyde never stays healthy a full 16 games. So expect the backup RB to get a fair workload.
        – Shanahan loves using his RBs in the passing game, and Juszczyk will be used as a combo FB/HB/TE. I expect he will get a lot of looks in the passing game, like a #1 TE would.
        – Foster will be fit and ready by TC. And he will start. The WILL makes a lot of tackles in this D. Telvin Smith and Deion Jones had over 100 tackles each last year.
        – Jones and Smith also led their teams in INTs last year. Foster will have his opportunities in coverage and he showed well in coverage in college.
        – Armstead is best as a bull rusher. Creates a lot of push, not many sacks. Thomas is a better pass rusher than Armstead in terms of splitting gaps, as is Buckner. While Brooks will likely be the main edge rusher, so expect him to pick up a few.
        – Hoyer always gets hurt. Question is whether Barkley can last the season.

        1. -Even with increased workload and injuries I don’t see your goal yet. They will be behind in games and not be able to rely on running game as much. Atlanta last year is not a good indicator of how this team will operate. Washington and Cleveland in his years as coordinator may give us a clue as what to expect 1st year or so.
-As much as a TE hybrid will be used, defenses will also look to limit those opportunities and force more conventional play.
          – Foster did fall for a reason and injury concerns are not insignificant. If he does have problems with his shoulder (argument at combine) perhaps it could sideline him. I don’t think he will play full season. Hope he does but didn’t like his PC seemed evasive to me and that could mean we don’t have full story on health either.
          – See above. Plus I think your DBs need to make those plays and if they aren’t it is because your front 7 stink and/or DBs stink. Either way not good.
-Thomas’ limitations will be seen right away in the NFL. He won’t be going against poor competition but smart, fast, strong and large OL. His size will be an issue. Armstead, while a bull rusher has a few years under his belt and that matters.
-This scenario is most plausible but I still am skeptical. We didn’t see it last year as putrid as the team played.

          1. – In Washington he had two players go over 800 yards in Morris and Griffen. In Cleveland his top two RBs both had over 600 yards rushing.
            – Huh? The same can be said of every freaking player. Guess what, guys still get the ball. Juszczyk will be one of their top targets.
            – Fair enough, injury can happen. But sounds like his current injury isn’t expected to be a problem. Though I see you are skeptical. Maybe you are right, but highly doubt the 49ers take him so high if they expect it to be an issue.
            – The WILL makes a lot of plays in this D. And none of the 49ers DBs have a history of making lots turnovers.
            – If you don’t like Thomas I get where you are coming from. I like him. He is going to be good.
            – No, but the Bears did with the exact same QBs.

            1. – Not first season out which was my point. To say that RBs can produce under KS is not in dispute but the Atlanta team is not analogous to our situation. Washington and Cleveland first year out are.
-This is a guy whose had just over 40 catches in his best year and you are saying he will do 50% better? I don’t see it.
-Teams get enamores with picks and rationalize. Happens all the time. They may also overlook pinkish flags which have reddish hue when it comes to injuries.
-that’s because our defense has been terrible. If our front line improves so will the picks. It’s a small matter really because you are correct that the WILL is a playmaker in this defense but I also think he won’t be there entire season so that plays into it as well.
-other two points I think we are where we are.

              1. – KS was only in Cleveland 1 year. Both his RBs had 600+ yards. And Hoyer was his QB.
                – Juice had 40+ catches last year on a team that used him almost exclusively as a FB. So yeah, I don’t think 50+ catches on a team using him in a variety of ways is difficult to imagine whatsoever.
                – I guess it all comes down to Foster’s health then. I think he will play the vast majority of games as a rookie. I expect injuries and off field issues are more likely to rear their ugly head down the track.

            2. -I stand corrected on the Cleveland info. Still don’t think that we have the RBs to get that done or the OL to assist them. But who knows…
-Juice may get his 50 and I hope he does and has decent yards after catch. Don’t see 3 getting 50+.

I think the team will have severe growing pains with new system and so many new faces. I have stated before that I hope I’m wrong but history is funny….

I was not on the Chip Kelly bandwagon when people were expecting a resurrection of the offense. I also saw how injuries really destroyed any chance the team had to do anything decent.
I don’t think this team is vastly different. We have average to below average QBs. Our lead running back is brittle and we do not have anyone on board who even comes close to his capacity in terms of production. Garçon’s best numbers are always touted but he is declining and will not have as capable a QB delivering the ball. The other receivers are just ok. Our TEs are still a mess. Our OL is wafer thin in depth.

Our defense has improved a bit but it’s all on paper. We will have to see when it takes the field.

In either case I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.

        2. I think Grant isn’t too far off on his grades. I wonder how good everyone would feel about this draft if Trent Baalke had been at the helm making these same picks instead on JL? I forgot where I read about the Beatherd pick to imagine the Jets doing it and seeing if you still felt good about the pick. Imagine TB making any one of these selections and then think whether they were decent?

I think most of us would question a third interior lineman. The team needs an Edge rusher but they really got an interior lineman who sometimes can do Edge duty. Not the same!

I really liked the Foster pick. Then watched the PC. I thought to myself, “here we go again!” This guy better mature quickly because his non-answer to a legitimate question was a concern.
Witherspoon is a poor tackler and if Baalke had selected him, we would be hopping mad at him for picking someone who couldn’t do what a football player should.
Beatherd’ selection was the biggest puzzler and it made me question whether the regime knows what it is doing or biting off more than it can chew. We will know in short order whether the team has a gem or just a useless bag of dust.
Williams good player who quit his team. Anyone remember Glen Coffee? I don’t care if why he quit but he did and that will matter. You can dress up the excuses however you want but he quit and the team wanted a talented RB with red flags and wanted to rationalize it. Teams do this all the time for other reasons (see Foster for ex) but the underlying issue is still there and the big question becomes when/if it happens again.
Little was a decent pick. May actually be an upgrade. We can hope.
Taylor was always open it seemed in the video I saw. Would like to see how he does in traffic. Doubt he is as good as everyone thinks otherwise he would be drafted much higher, right? As Grant said the team needs a punt returner.
I’d be surprised if he any of the rest of the draftees make the squad. Though Jones might edge out Purcell.

  27. It’s funny, Grant. I think you’re being the devil’s advocate and you’ll occasionally be correct. I can’t help but reflect that, although Joe Montana was putting up GOAT numbers and accomplishments, the “critics” frequently remarked on his arm strength. People speculated how good the Niners would be with Phil Sims. Marino, Duper and Clayton were all the rage, but how’d that work out? I was there BTW, uncomfortable wood benches, but a pretty epic game.

  28. 49ers will need to release some players to make room for all the UDFAs they are signing.

  29. I’m going to repost this right here and be done with it. Very solid A- to A. Won’t even quibble about that. See it clearly according to scheme fit and need. Every hole filled, every need upgraded? Of course not. Given the team’s deplorable state it will take two drafts to accomplish that. Expect one or two additions from the final 53 league cuts. Lynch and Shanahan’s inaugural draft? Spectacular in every way. Removed the haunting stain of the past bumbling three or so years.

  30. I think Lynch and Shanny did just fine with their first draft, showed some shrewdness and some boldness. We shall find out in due time.

      1. Sometimes earlier, rarely later, Dad. Congrats on your 70th season I am going on my 58th myself.

            1. Oregon thanks for the offer of some brew. However once again I am taking off, in fact within an hour I will be leaving doing all lower 48 states. However when I get back will join you for a brew. Be gone 2 + months. I now have an hotspot so I can now have the net wherever I go so I will be checking in on the blog.

              1. Undercenter

I’m a patient man when it comes to sharing brews….Enjoy your Odessey, and I’ll be here when you get back in two months…I went to the SPRING GAME yesterday…things looking up for the DUCKS…got a hell of a sunburn though…again…Enjoy…

  31. I think the first 2 picks defined rhe draft…getting 2 of the top 5 is a slam dunk.

  32. I would have to believe that Shanahan signed off on every offensive player taken, especially Beathard. If the Coach thinks these players fit his vision of the offense, I’m not going to quibble. Overall grade: A- (docked a notch because I wanted them to trade up for Ju Ju).

  33. I am content. Niners did exactly what I wanted. Lynch put on his Trader Bill Hat, and unleashed a storm.

I will disagree with Grant’s grades because I think it was a slam dunk grand slam, and how could you not give an A for that? I almost gave them an A-, because of poor drafting management. CJB was ranked 215 and they jumped with a pick to grab him at 104. Part of the draft is gamesmanship, and even if they liked him, getting desperate was not being cool, calm and collected. They should have shown patience and selected Carl Lawson with that pick. He was a good value at that position.

I did get one correct pick, and if they had chosen Lawson instead of CJB, I would have gotten 2. However, what Lynch did with the 67th pick, I cannot do anything but applaud. Trading back for a second round pick is pure gold, and gives them more capital to work with if they try to move up in the QB auction next season.

I selected DJ Jones in my final mock,so I did get one right. If any poster can present a mock that shows 2 picks, I will give kudos.

I salute Razor for his astute first pick, and I hope Prime pays up instead of being a welsher.

  34. Tbh you didn’t take inti account where Foster was drafted. He was supposed to go top 10 originally…

  35. Grant – could you please post a picture of the monkey and dartboard you used to concoct this “article?”

  36. After Lynch’s comments on the first day, I can’t help but think that Paraag was the trade expert all along getting value for the trades we made (with Baalke getting the credit) but with Baalke selecting players it was a high miss rate. Our Front Office is now better at evaluation and Paraag is still getting us value for our trades so with better decisions being made at the slots we are selecting players it feels like a totally different draft. Not perfect by any means but far better than it was before…

    1. You realize that many of ‘Baalke’s’ picks were at the request of the coach at the time. Taylor Mays. AJ Jenkins. Colin Kaepernick.

It wasn’t like he was some autocrat cutting everyone else out. Even if people have constructed that myth around it. And that’s how it works with most teams. Coaches have input. Many times they get their way even if the GM takes the credit or blame.

      1. No, Baalke ran the draft with an iron fist.

Sure, they had some input, but Baake made sure to everyone that he was the man in charge, and that he pulled the trigger.

Last couple of seasons, the scouts were wondering if Baalke was using their reports in the bathroom.

This season, Lynch brought in Adam Peters and Mayhew.
he made sure that everyone knew that the coaches would have a lot of input since they would be coaching the players chosen. That is diametrically opposed to how Baalke viewed the draft.

To put it bluntly, Baalke was a megalomaniac, while Lynch is a team player who is inclusive and builds consensus.

      2. Baalke had control of the draft and roster. That is one of the reasons the Niners had a hard time finding someone decent to replace Harbaugh when he was fired. There is no doubt Harbaugh had input especially on Kap, but AJ Jenkins was all Baalke or have you forgotten the sealed envelope story? BTW, Harbaugh had a lot of success with the QB he lobbied for. There is no doubt, or at least should be no doubt, that Baalke was responsible for the downward spiral this team took when Harbaugh left.

        1. I find it interesting that the posters who were so adamantly against any situational slack cutting in respect to Kaep ( recognizing and considering variables ) are the ones doing that to mitigate the failures of Baalke. What transpired with the team after Harbaugh left should have validated any suspicions as to who was the control freak in this organization.

It seems to be human nature for individuals to adjust reality and their lying eyes tell them to justify their own preconceived realities. While injuries did play a part in the rapid decline of the 49er roster under Baalke that decline was an inevitable fore gone conclusion based on his personality and the system he used as GM. The guy was OCD for “G” sake. Put that factor together with inexperience and it’s a formula for eventual disaster for a GM.

          1. I do believe as Moses pointed out that Baalke listened to his coaches in respect to Mays, and Kaepernick. The Mays failure probable shook his trust in others opinions a bit. Especially for someone with his natural tendencies for control, When his ” steal of the draft ” Jenkins turned into a frog, along with Harbaugh wanting more roster control, it threatened his sense of esteem. This triggered tendency for even more control. It’s a catch 22 thing. Some one who has little experience and football knowledge really needs to rely on others, but the fact that he knows so little makes him insecure and less trusting.

  37. http://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/105763-transcript-john-lynch-kyle-shanahan-post-draft-press-conference/

“Trent Taylor is a player that, again, we told you guys that we weren’t really concerned with how and where the rest of the league valued players. Are they a fit for us? And, from the start, this was a guy that we were excited with in his ability to separate in the slot, which is such a key component in today’s football.”

“We got the right D.J. Jones, and he’s a stout nose, who also has three technique versatility, but yet I think really dynamic.”

“Pita T., from Utah. He’s a guy that we just really, we started watching what we call that LEO position.”

“[DB] Adrian Colbert. He’s listed as a safety. We think he has corner flexibility as well. He’s a big athlete that can run and play tremendous special teams, very physical player.”

    1. Gotta say, I quite like the offensive players they drafted on day 3. I really didn’t think they would want a bar of Williams, and from the sounds of it initially they didn’t, but talent wise he is better than a 4th rounder. If he is dedicated to football he could be a very good pick. Kittle as well – good all round TE. While Taylor I think could be a real surprise as a good slot WR.

    1. Today I stood on a hillside, looking towards Tomales Bay, and realized just how lucky we are to live in this slice of heaven. The hills were green, there were hawks catching the thermals, and I could see for miles.

Diss Santa Rosa if you dare, but- this is the closest thing to paradise, as far as nature is concerned. LB.

I also lived through the draft, and the Niners might not have a losing season because of it.

      1. And the best thing of all is we don’t have to hear you snivel any longer about old wind up!

Welcome to the new 49ers Seb. Where we all cheer for the team, not the player!

          1. I’m glad you have. I will welcome you again to the 49er faithful where the team comes first, not the player.

          2. And I will invite you to go where its hot. I have been a die hard faithful Niner fan since 1978, and I do not need to be welcomed back from the likes of you.

I have seen it all Steve and Joe, Joe and Steve, Alex and Kaep. That never made me waver in my love for this team, and I want them to win multiple more rings no matter who the QB is.

          3. Sure thing Seb. Just stay out of real football decisions then.
Stick to your unicorn prognostications and pot haze inventions.
Leave the football to the men!

        1. Wecome to the team where we cheer for the team not individual players— Says the Guy who roots for an individual players to fail just so they can be proven right. And then spins a horrible team roster into all stars so the blame can be directed towards the one player he hates.

I may not be able to recognize football talent as well as many on this site are capable of, but I have always had the ability to recognize mental and emotional dysfunctions with minimal information. I recognized the issues with Baalke in the early on in the 2013 season when most still thought he was a genius. He was a relatively easy call, and so are you.

I stopped posting or or even frequenting this site because the negative and hatred toward a specific player was totally over the top. I was waiting till he was gone, though while it was obviously going to happen it did take longer than anticipated. Well he is gone now so it is time to let it go. If anyone needs to get with the program it is you and your ilk. So lets all start fresh today.

      2. >>Diss Santa Rosa if you dare, but- this is the closest thing to paradise, as far as nature is concerned.

But the closest thing to a putrid backwater, as far as national media is concerned.

        1. C’mon Rib-
It’s more like the pastoral lands of sports journalists. Mike Silver and Matt Maiocco emerged, and Bob Padecky and Lowell Cohn went out to pasture here. Grant’s an East Bay Guy who just bounces his signal through here.
Seb, as usual, misses the nuance. We like folks thinking we’re backwards hicks, keeps us less crowded on weekdays. The tourists overwhelm us on weekends.

          1. BT, I’ll give you that. The cream of some Sonoma heifers rises to…if not the very top, then to the top of the butter churn.

  38. Grant, I think you’re too concerned with Solomon cannibalizing Armstead’s reps. But if Solomon was the BPA, Armstead hasn’t done enough to warrant drafting someone else. Armstead may eventually get traded.

Also, isn’t Zuttah an upgrade over Kilgore? Why do you have Kilgore starting. Every time I watched, it seemed like Kilgore was getting beaten and was too small. Maybe he moves to guard and beats out Beadles, but Zuttah made the Pro Bowl as a center. To me, that’s an obvious upgrade unless there’s something I don’t know. Then again, why would the Ravens dump him?

    1. I actually think his logic is faulty based on what we know:

Round 1, pick No. 3: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford. The third interior pass rusher the 49ers have drafted in the first round the past three years. Strange. A defense can’t play more than two interior rushers at a time. At least the 49ers traded down for Thomas and picked up an extra third-round pick for 2018. Grade: C.

Kyle Shanahan said recently at Stanford’s pro day that he believes Thomas can play the team’s pass-rush position.

In short, Thomas could flop to RDE or will remain at LDE according to the head coach who just drafted him. Mitchell, who has no real pass rush, comes out. Armstead comes inside or they put Blair inside and leave Armstead outside.

There is, literally, no issue if you believe Shanahan. And, frankly, between Cohn and Shanahan… Here, let me put this out there.

This is Charley Casserly on a certain young WR coach for the Texans when they had to decide who to pick — Reggie Bush or Mario Williams.

“I went around the room and asked all of them who they thought we should draft, and I started with Kyle because he was the youngest,” Casserly, an analyst for the NFL Network, recalled Wednesday.

“Kyle said we should take Mario Williams, because he was the best player for the franchise.

“Think about that. He was an offensive coach, we needed a running back, and he said we should take the defensive player … That’s why I always thought he would be a head coach, because he can see the big picture.

The problem with Grant, and most fans, is that they’re all short-term thinkers. It’s all about ‘now.’ Coaches and GMs recognize they have to deal with the now. But the smart ones also deal with the future.

Walsh dealt with the future even when the 49ers were terrible and going 2-14. Baalke.. Not so much. Donahue. Not so much. Policy & Clark. Not so much. That’s why Walsh built a dynasty that lasted over a decade. And the others failed.

          1. ht – I’m reminded of that syndrome you described recently. Something about not knowing what you don’t know.

            1. I think is was closer to those who don’t know tend to place themselves in a much higher percentile than their knowledge warrants. Those that do know tend to place themselves in a slightly lower percentile than their knowledge warrants.

In this particular case, I thought Grant’s reply was just lazy. That laziness probably comes from a greater desire for clicks than for insight. When Grant goes for insight, he frequently does a great job.

              1. This^^^^^^^

Except I’d substitute “sometimes” for “frequently”.

        1. lol. I’m ‘XYZ’ said by every converted-to-guard/center OT ever drafted. Said every Wishbone QB converted to Safety. Said ever DE converted to OLB (or vice versa). Said ever corner converted to safety. Heck, even said by Ronnie Lott & Eric Wright, both college safeties converted to CB.

Thomas tells us what he did successfully in college. Where he’ll play in the NFL will be up to the coaches and Thomas isn’t the coach.

  39. What about the receiver we got from the CFL? Is he going to be back in camp? Seems to me, he’s got more going for him than Smelter.

And I guess the brittle Ellington will be gone. It’s a shame. I remember how explosive he looked against SD a couple years ago. Seems like he could be a Percy Harvin type. Then again, he is. Can’t stay on the field.

  40. How did yours?

Grant did very well, A lot of his players he mentioned previously, surfaced. Months ago, he said that CJ Beathard was a good fit for a KS offense. He mocked Jarrad Davis, and he moved way up in the draft.

He did hit on Joe Williams, so he did get one right.

Grant is not a downer at all, I like his sharp wit and he focuses on what is most important. What I am sick and tired of is all the saccharine bloviation and lengthy reports that say nothing.

Sugary optimism may not be good for the Niners or their fans. Maybe we need a dose of reality, and the reality is that they are a 2-14 team until they play a game.

    1. And we see the opposite.

Remember Terry Donahue? He got all A’s and A-‘s. Who was his best player? The punter. The rest… They pretty much all sucked. Some sucked a lot. Some sucked a medium amount. A few only enough to have some long-term fringe careers.

But unless I’ve just forgotten someone, only Andy Lee, the punter, was a stud.

    2. Bob Johnson,
Good read. The pundits aren’t always right, which is why I don’t put much weight on their analysis.
It would be interesting to find some old evaluations of Montana and Brady before they were drafted.

    1. I’m really happy we got Cannon.

It is very surprising he was not drafted.
But again. Dupree was the last WR drafted and lots of experts thought he would go in round 3. 4 at the latest.

  41. I was impressed with the draft management process. Regardless of the quality of player, this draft team showed they know how to maneuver. function and think on their feet. Overall, I thought it was a good showing by the new guys. They developed a plan and worked it.

  42. A few observations. If in camp Thomas proves he’s not a pass rusher then he plays inside and Armstead is gone. No duplication. Foster is a sure thing at LB unless his head is in outer space. Don’t let him room with Aaron Lynch. We have too many RB’s, and why we traded for another one baffles me. I’m guessing that Hyde is probably on the way out along with McDonald, Purcell and Ellington. Lynch and Shanahan want their own imprint on this team. They did the best they could at CB as by the end of round 2 there wasn’t much left. I’d rather they traded up but who knows what was possible. As for the QB, that one’s on Shanahan; I’d rather have seen them go CB. But in the long run it’s all about Cousins. Also on Shanahan a tiny slot receiver/returner; maybe the bump-and-run will be out of style and he can stay of his feet. All-in-all we got two excellent players in Thomas and Foster (knowing there’s risk with Foster), a maybe at corner (can Redmond play?), a potential winner at RB (another possible head case) and then a bunch of bodies selected in spots where they were rated, some of whom we hope pan out. If Ward and Reid pan out at safety, then next year we go for offense. This was always a two-year plan and I think phase one was a success, the only risk being a couple of key players with issues.

  43. Look, everyone is entitled to their opinion on the draft, including Grant. I don’t agree with all of his grades, but I respect the fact that he put forth his reasoning for the grades he dished out and so be it. His opinion caries no more or no less weight than anybody’s. Bringing his father and the paper he works for into it is rather CS. I’ve been getting the PD for 40 years. It’s a fine little paper (except the Monday edition)! Frankly, even evaluating these picks before they’ve even strapped on a jock for the team is rather silly IMO. How about waiting to see how they actually perform and then give your grade. But, I guess when your a make believe GM of a football team, and you’ve put out your make believe draft choices, of which most didn’t come true, you have every right to hand out make believe grades to the actual choices. ))

    1. Sure, every draft should be evaluated 3 years from now, to see how they played.

Now comes the hard part. Evaluating the players, coaching them up and fitting them into the scheme.

Recent history has shown how important coaching is to the success of a team. I think KS and his staff is the strongest one in 3 years.

  44. Thank God that Jed hired some guys that ignore pretty much all of the advice on this board, and particularly that from the host.

  45. Grant, you likely said this before and I forgot… but who would you have taken for pick 3? Lattimore? Adams?

      1. Adams and Foster roaming the 2nd level would be deadly.

I really like Thomas. But there’s still a void at edge rusher, and Armstead’s role is muddied. Armstead, Buckner and Foster all pass rush much, much better from inside. The difference is stark.

        1. Armstead, Buckner and [Thomas] all pass rush much, much better from inside. The difference is stark.

          [correction]

          1. I think Armstead would have had a reduced role with or without Thomas. The main focus of the new D is stopping the run. Armstead struggles in that area. I think this is why they want him to play LEO.

            1. #80 – Good point. Armstead’s issue has been reading where the ball was. He could thrive in a sic-em role. I have not given up on him by any means.

            2. Let him play with 2 healthy shoulders. He actually did OK playing with one arm.

Lynch got Thomas to create more depth. This is a game of attrition, and the more depth the better.

Niners found that out when Bowman went down. Baalke thought that drafting an ILB was not needed. Lynch traded up to get a top 10 talent.

  46. Long time reader. First time posting.
Grant, I’m grading final mock with a curve that is a bit less punishing than yours toward the Niners. Whose value chart did you use for your mock? Unless you used an entirely different one to evaluate the Niner’s draft, your grading curve is seriously flawed.
    Mock # (Actual #)

No. 2 (1): Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M.
The consensus was that Garrett would go #1. The reality was that Garrett went #1. Grade F.
No. 34 (52): DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame.
Quarterbacks did go higher than their ratings predicted, but not this high. Grade B-
No. 66 (43): Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
Overcoming injury was not as big a concern as you thought. C+
No. 109 (150). Jordan Leggett, TE, Clemson.
The TE that “fit [Shanahan’s] profile” went later than 109 but nearly 30 picks higher than your choice did. Grade D+
No. 143 (UDFA). Eric Wilson, LB, Cincinnati.
Went to Vikings as TC fodder. Grade F.
    No. 146 (179). T.J. Logan, RB/KR, North Carolina.
Even you were happier with the RB pick they made at 121. Grade C+
No. 161 (173). Brian Allen, CB, Utah.
We’ll see if this guy turns out better than the CB picked at 66 whom you gave a B-. Your call vs. where this guy actually landed is close. Grade B+
    No. 198. Rudy Ford (208),
Pretty hard to miss in the last rounds. Grade A-
    No. 202 (172). Isaiah McKenzie, WR/PR, Georgia.
Not Shanahan’s pick for a small punt returner, but Denver like him better than you did. Grade C+
No. 219 (217). Corey Levin, OG, Chattanooga.
A small-school guard who fit [the Titan’s] outside-zone-blocking scheme. You almost nailed this one. Would have been A+ if it had just been the Niners. Grade A.

  47. Not going to grade the draft. That will come years later when we know how gamble picks Reuben Foster and Joe Williams turned out.

How do I feel about the draft? Pretty good.

Many said only 6 or the top 20 were free of injuries, off field issues or flunked drug tests. The Niners got the best one of the “clean six” available in Thomas. Some of the 14 that weren’t clean six could have better rookie seasons. Perhaps even better careers. But you don’t mess with the 3-pick.

Then the 49ers got Reuben Foster. Thomas safe. Foster no risk it, no biscuit.

I have mixed feelings about trading 77 for a 2018 2nd+7th. The last two drafts had alot of underclassmen. If the trend continues and the Saints don’t go deep into the post season, it was a great trade. But if the underclassmen bubble bursts and the Saints do well, the talent at that 2018 pick could be worse than what was at 77. Alot of good edge rushers in the 3rd this year we missed out on.

    1. Third Round Edge Rushers
      Jordan Willis
      Derek Rivers (my favorite)
      Tim Williams
      Tarell Basham
      Dawuane Smoot
      Chris Wormley

Can’t be certain 2018 2nd rounder from Saints will have better edge rush choices.

    2. Tale of Two Trade-Aheads.

      Trade Ahead 2012

      49ers traded 4th (103) for the Panthers 6th (180)+2013 3rd (74)
Niners got pick 180 for trading a current 4th into a future 3rd

      Trade Ahead 2017

      49ers traded 3rd (77) for the Saints 7th (229)+2018 2nd (tbd)
Niners got pick 229 for trading a current 3rd into a future 2nd

There’s a bit of honeymoon period backslapping, and that’s OK. I love the vibe of the new management. If the Saints are so-so or worse, it will turn out to be a great trade.

  48. PR: Trent Taylor
    KR: Joe Williams

That could be electric. We may have the best ST unit in football. Gould and Pinion are decent. We will have several ST aces in kick and punt coverage.

    1. He’s got alligator arms. Not really a guy who will make spectacular catches in traffic.

      1. Those alligator arms were good for the 3rd lowest drop rate in the nation last year. From the guy that had the second most catches. And has been widely reported as routinely making circus catches in both training and games. Sooo, I’m calling BS.

        1. Catch radius. That’s the issue with the short height and short arms. Not drops.

WEAKNESSES: Falls below desired size requirements for the position. Small, thin frame. Extremely short arms limit his catch radius. Has trouble plucking high throws and requires increased accuracy from his quarterback. Will need to pick up pace of his routes as a pro. Could struggle to uncover quickly against NFL-caliber athletes with length. Can do better job of finding softer spots in zone coverage. Caught just 21 touchdowns over his last 308 targets. Will put ball on the ground during run-after-catch. Has seven career fumbles.

          1. I saw a player who could catch in traffic and ran good routes to get open.

I also saw him juke and change direction on a dime.

If he is fumble prone, they should just tell him to fall down after first contact, and not keep struggling, especially if he is past the first down marker.

        2. He’s a carbon copy of Cole Beasley. Exactly the same size and same type of game. The question will be how he adjusts when defenses in the NFL don’t give him a free release off the LOS.

    2. Thanks George! The little guy seems like a stud to me, he reminds of Wes walker and Danny wood head, they look like anything but football players but they get the job done!

  49. I somewhat disagree on Trent Taylor. He’s slow and has very small hands and that worries me. How they compare him to Wes Weller or Julian Edelman is beyond me. He’ll be battling with Eric Rogers for the backup slot role. If he doesn’t step it up in camp, he’ll be put on the practice squad.

    1. Because he’s short. He’s been very productive in the slot. He’s got very, very good hands.

My only issue with the comparison is that the Internet is full of ‘the next Wes Welker’ articles about all the ‘next Wes Welkers’ we’ve, ultimately, never seen produce. Not ever short WR is the next Wes Welker. Not ever average-arm QB is the next Joe Montana. Not every 6th round QB is the next Tom Brady…

  50. Good morning! Reading these comments like rockets and others, it made me think that I believe what is irritating to me and others, could be the low grades is grant punishing lynch and shanny for the armstead pick, I like Buckner but like other outlets have reported is their run defense is so bad you can not have enough d line men and they have a 6 year contract so they should not be punished for dead weight or pieces that do not fit there plan. It is like grant has tunnel vision or can not sperate one regime from the other ,let’s not flog them for balke’s sins!

They are going after players that they seewill help now and in the future, do not get me wrong, I liked Adams and would love to have him bit sometimes the right big is worth more then the right small, kind of the basketball principal. But I trust the team and their due diligence. Yes lynch and parag were trader happy but they at least seemed to have plan on what to do with the extra picks and to have to 2’s and 3’s for next years draft is out standing! Yes time will tell, but we have a team working together and we may have real talent to build on , this seems so much better than the fools gold for the last few years! Go niners!

    1. I agree Reb. This was so much better than the crap Baalke had been pedaling the past few years. The defense is going to improve dramatically I believe, but the offense will be a work in progress. Can’t fix everything in one offseason, but they took a big step forward with this class.

  51. ESPN: How would you grade the 49ers’ draft?

    A — 59%
    B — 35%
    C — 5%
    D — 1%
    F — 1%

Good thing Grant can’t spam the poll… :)

    1. Yeah, and if Thomas sits behind Armstead and does not play, and Foster disappears in a puff of smoke, all the Pollyannish optimism will remind me of last season.

      1. There you go again, rooting against the Niners. Take your great evaluation knowledge and your fan club to Buffalo, they’ve got openings.

              1. Talking down to someone is just your style. Sounds like you have a big opinion of yourself.

              2. I just dislike loudmouth with high opinions of themselves. Then appoint themselves the blog police….

              3. Guess what? After posting my 10 point plan for Lynch, and seeing him almost follow it to a tee, I get to crow.

One other recommendation was- if the Niners covet a player, they should leapfrog over other teams by adding a later draft pick to be able to trade up and get him.

Hmmm, the Niners did not just do it, they did it thrice.

              4. Any good GM would trade to get their player. And what was your comments on the QB they jumped up for….

              5. Seb’s the kind who would stand underneath a traffic signal when showing red, and boldly predict it will turn green. When it does turn green he would proclaim his brilliance, even suggesting that the traffic signal was channeling him.

Seb has an aching need for attention and adulation–even if forced.

              6. No, if you had followed the draft over the years, there have been many drafts when they did not trade at all. Everyone just took the player at their designated position.

There were many competent GMs then, and they did not trade up to get the player they targeted. If they missed out, they just took the next on the list.

This draft was an anomaly, with 38 trades. Lynch accomplished 6, and became mad when he missed the record.

One big factor was the allowance of trading compensatory picks, and teams learned that other teams may want to leapfrog up a round to get a player they covet, and it would only cost a later draft pick. Both teams benefited.

That said, I was incredibly surprised that Lynch managed to do a trade, and flabbergasted when he did it 6 times. He was bold and aggressive, just like Bill Walsh. he also was shrewd and calculating, and generally made smart moves. The only one I would question was trading up into the 3rd round when just being patient may have saved a draft pick. I may fault them for making an unforced error, but next time, they will learn from this experience, and possibly avoid more mistakes. Also, overall, one slight miscalculation cannot diminish the blockbuster acquisitions. Getting those 2018 second and third round picks was an amazing feat, and was the work of a master, not a novice.

Next year, Lynch will not need a Trader Bill hat. He will just don his ‘Trader John’ hat.

        1. Rooting against the Niners? Just keeping it real. Murphy’s Law.

Remember? This is a 2-14 team, and many posters were crowing about losses because they wanted to solely blame one player for the losses.

Guess you have become my assigned gadfly, so have at it.

You sure do not scare me. I laugh in your face because i know you were too timid to even attempt a mock.

          1. I used to think you were kidding because you couldn’t possibly be this asinine, but now I realize it’s true.
Better hitch your Kapwagon to your Unicorn if you want to reach Buffalo in time for TC

              1. Yup, I am the poster on this site that advocated that the Niners trade back to accumulate picks.

Everyone else derided my ideas, but I threw out a myriad of scenarios, and lo and behold, the Niners managed to pull it off, and still got the player they coveted.

              2. You are also the one that said to bundle current failing players to get a draft pick….name me one team that has ever done that!

              3. Lynch said yesterday out of his own mouth in the post draft presser that:
He did not go into the draft expecting to trade. Each trade was opportunistic. It wasn’t a plan.
                Just to keep it real.

              4. Keeping it real, he also shouted out to the world that the Niners were open for trades and would consider all offers, something I am sure you know that I advocated previously for.

Lynch knew that the number 2 pick had great value, and he did exactly what I wanted when he managed to leverage that pick into several more.

              5. Aus, did you post before the draft that the Niners should trade back, and get 2018 second and third round picks?

                Thought so.

            1. BT,

I think he’s just a lonely guy who gets no validation from real life and lives in a Narcissistic haze of denial on a message board. I’d feel bad for him if he wasn’t so annoying.

          2. Free-kin Seb!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just will NOT let Kap go……………even years from now,,,,,,,,,

            1. Wow, I did not mention him by name, yet you were so hypersensitive, you decided to misspell an expletive.

      2. Yeah, and if your if’s and what-if’s could fly they would have wings. And what’s less substantial than a puff of smoke is you trying to play the cautious contrarian, after whiffing blindly on the draft. Lol, give us all a break.

          1. How many did you get right? The last time you got picks right ht you were mind-melt with Baalke, remember?

            1. You got none, because you were afraid to be ridiculed.

BTW, I got one, same as Grant. However, I chose DJ Jones.

            2. It doesn’t friggin matter. The only reason you are teased is because you go on and on and on with self promotion and then fall on your face when your fantasy doesn’t become reality. Draft. Kap. Play calling, yaddda-yadda-yadda.
Do you see Razor and Scooter going back and forth arguing?
Brodie and Coffee? All day every day you spend on here arguing with folks. But hey, who knows, maybe you are the only cogent one here?
In which case you should either go away because we all are beneath your fabulous intellect
              OR you’re Looney Tunes.
PS- Set your GPS for Orchard Park, NY, not Buffalo. We don’t want you getting lost and ending up in Schenectady or Poughkeepsie.

              1. Nice! Hope Seb’s caretaker let’s him out before he soils the carpet…again. When he get’s worked-up he marks his territory.

              2. BT, this is a blog, and posters can post whatever they want, within the bounds of decency and decorum.

‘Frankly, I do not give a damn’, what you think because to you, I am THAT guy, the guy you send out on point to take the first shot. The expendable one that you want killed because you were just covering your own rear end.

So if you want to continue to attack me, bring it on. I can punch back, and I do not take fools gladly.

Inviting me to leave is a lesson in futility, and just makes me want to stay here even more. You all have been trying to insult and bully me to leave, but here I am.

                I aint goin’ nowheres!

I like this site despite the snark, and have all the time in the world, so get over it.

Someday, you might learn your lesson like Scooter. He does not engage me, and we get along just fine. He even gave me kudos for being correct. He is a good sport, and we could use more like him.

So once again, I invite you to ignore my posts, and I will try to do the same.

              3. And the looney tunes comes out again….SMH.

I hope to see more comments from cubis or jack hammer. Not this same old dribble on “how I inflicted my views on the 49ers”

          2. This was a dumb trade from a dumb team THINKING they can do what the Eagles did. Eagles picked a real QB, the 49ers did not.

      3. What does that have to do with anything? Donahue drafts regularly got A’s. They were terrible. Walsh, as far as I can remember, never got an A. He built a dynasty.

It was that last little line that should have clued you into what I was doing.

  52. Which pick was the best value?

    Reuben Foster — 86%
Witherspoon & Williams were next at 4%.
Bethard came in 4th at 3%.
    Kiffle &Taylor – 1% each.

  53. Looks like a strong collection of UDFAs. Been checking scouting reports and YouTube video. I’m too lazy and tired to post all the links. Overall, camp will be competitive and preseason games entertaining.

  54. Three or four of the UDFAs are quite interesting, like KD Cannon and Magnusun and Jerome. If in fact we are going to see an 80 to 90% roster turnover one or more of these guys might make the practice squad or even find their way onto the final roster.

    1. Agree. I could see a couple making the roster. Hikutini and the guy from Oregon State are intriguing too.

  55. SAM and Leo are two different positions with two completely different roles. Per the DC. Why do you insist on making up things when it comes to scheme?

Also they said Thomas will play both inside and outside.

Look you have a responsibility to know what is being run and what the concepts are. You really should be fired for making up things and not studying.

    1. Get over it. Grant, as a media person, has access to the practices, and I feel like I am standing next to him with his poignant descriptions and salient observations.

Know what is going to be run? Even the coaches do not know exactly until they assemble all the players and find out how best to utilize them. Declaring that they will run only one scheme with only one terminology is an exercise in futility. Many teams use the same terms in different ways, of have different definitions of the terms. Maybe they will use the Otto or bring back the Elephant.

Saleh has been a LB coach, so there is no film on his defenses as a DC. He may take parts from other coaches and formulate a whole new concept with different terminology. Who knows? Certainly not you. All I know is that they will style the defense after the Seahawks, but they have different personnel, and until they can get the players on the field, you, I and even Grant, will not know exactly how the Niners will develop the defense.

Grant has forgotten more football than you seem to know, so back off. This is one poster who likes what Grant writes and thinks he is spot on, many times.

      1. I’m confident Grant feels warm inside, knowing that you are standing by him, quick to defend and deflect; quick to fawn. A little over the top.

Psst… Since you always have one eye in the mirror, be sure now and then to check your nose for brown smudges.

        1. Just trying to make sure that anyone who throws out snark will get a response they will not like, like I do with you.

I just read how the Niners were trying to trade Vance Macdonald.

Your daddy, messed things up. Baalke knew he was a dead man walking, so he made a parting shot. He resigned Vance to a 4 year contract, which obviously made other teams leery of obtaining him. To top it off, he signed, and the next game he gets injured. Thanks BAALKE.

              1. Yup it was exactly as you picture it in your mind Swammy! Tell me what will KS have for breakfast tomorrow?

              2. Well, I know you are eating crow.

Did you advocate trading back? No.

Did you advocate trading up? No.

Did you advocate getting 2018 second and third round picks? No.

              3. Sigh. You never give up. I not only answered you I told you how. Advocated in my first mock a move back and then a trade up into first. BIG DEAL!!! I was wrong on the picks and it was, as all mocks are, an exercise in learning more about players and not an opportunity for self promotion Kim Kardashian! You think you accomplished something in you 4000 hours of posted mocks. You just wasted a portion of your precious life on a stupid exercise. We got across the bridge by the way!

              4. Hmmm, you got NONE right? What is the matter with you?

Maybe you should shut up and let the experts do the talking. ;p

  56. What cracks me up is all these so called experts that were anti-Thomas are now eating sour grapes, and it’s reflected in their so called “grades”. Bitter Biderman and all the rest who were adamant it would be a S or CB. I just sit back and smile knowing we just got the best defensive lineman and the best linebacker in the 2017 draft class, and if that were not enough, we also got ammunition to target our future franchise quarterback next year….

    1. Agree-I wanted Adams, but I’m thrilled and was torn between him & Thomas. His on field film along with Bowl & combine were the best. I don’t know why they can’t see there is more than one great player at top of the draft. If Thomas is good for Bill Polian he’s should be good enough for Biderman. That guy is always a b**ch because the Niners took his press pass away. As for our safety position-Jimmy Ward was our best player in the secondary the last two years and as for the line -Thomas could be the next Justin Smith allowing the rest of the defensive front to thrive.

    2. What I was amazed at was the fact that they traded back, and still got him. What a coup.

      1. My last mock had a trade back with the Jets, so I thought that Chicago would grab King Solomon at 3. Glad I was wrong.

        1. Not me, I’m glad Chicago got their Qb that the 49ers ignored. Too bad for that 4 and 12 season coming up.

          1. BT may criticize you for not being a Niner fan….

Of course, to me, you are a hate filled troll that brings nothing to this site.

    3. Razor, congratulations in getting your guy.

As many know, I was in the Malik Hooker camp. If he turns out to be durable enough, a steal for the Colts.

But Hooker had medical concerns. Only 6 or the top 20 ranked players were free of injuries, off field issues or flunked drug tests. Thomas is the best one of the “clean six.” You don’t mess with the 3-pick.

I have no concerns about Thomas’ role. He’ll play DE base, kick inside in passing downs. The only question is Armstead’s role, which was affected by the switch to 4-3 anyway. Last training camp Staley was talking about how hard pass pro was vs Armstead. He could be a surprise outside pass rusher.

I’m also expecting line stunts. Lots of mixing and matching between Thomas, Buckner and Armstead. Going to be fun to watch.

      1. Thanks. What I find humorous is Armstead was viewed by many as weak on the pass rushing front, and strong against the run prior to the draft. I think his future bread will be buttered by getting after the quarterback….

        1. Did not Armtead have a good rookie year as a pass rush…I Though he was ranked high by PFF. And was having a monster training camp until he hurt his shoulder. I think to many are giving up on him to early

          1. Txtree49er – Armstead graded very well as an inside pass rusher. Armstead, Buckner and Thomas do their best pass rushing over guards.

But we don’t know how good Armstead will be pass rushing out wide. Over guards, its about “pressure.” Arik can get under guards and lift them up like a spring. Its impressive. But out wide vs OTs? We will see.

          2. I was talking about when Armstead was drafted. He was touted as a run stuffer with little to offer as a pass rusher.

          3. The problem with Armstead and the reason why I didn’t want him to be picked by the Niners, is that he was all potential coming out of College. His tape was unimpressive overall and his production wasn’t that good either. He is very strong and uses that strength in his pass rush, but doesn’t really have any other tools in the box, and has proven to be a poor run defender. Thomas is what the previous regime hoped Armstead could be. I’m not giving up on Armstead yet, but his lack of technique and production in College combined with the shoulder problems doesn’t fill me with a lot of hope.

      2. I know how many are so high on Thomas but weren’t these the same guys who loved Armstead and Buckner? Now, many posters talk as if AA is trash and should be cast off for a little trade value while Solomon somehow will reign forever! This is why franchises continually fail, new regime, new process. Old one doesn’t fit start again with new pieces but it may not work and meanwhile the natives (fans) get restless. Sooner or later something gives.

Arik A., E. Reid, Jimmy Ward even Tank. are solid football players who have not been well employed and/or had injuries. Wanting to get rid of good players is folly and a recipe for disaster.

        1. People are writing off AA way too early. He had a great training camp, was poised for a breakout 2016 but hurt his shoulder.

My issue with AA is his best fit, which I think is inside. The change to a 4-3 and addition of Thomas complicate this.

I’m not overly concerned. I believe in D-line depth. Contrast the 4th qtr pass rush vs Marino in the 84 Super Bowl vs the exhausted pass rush vs Brady in the 17 Super Bowl.

          1. I am concerned with depth on a depleted D when we get a #1 pick who is essentially PT. That’s a waste.

  57. While I don’t agree with Grant’s draft grades for 1,2 and 4, the reality is no one knows how these choices will work out. It could be like the Seahawks 2012 draft or the Niners 2012 draft or somewhere in between.
But I think the approach based on the information available was excellent.
I am some what at a lost as to the complaints about The QB’s selection. He appears to have the fundamental skills a QB requires, toughness and a passion for the game. He is an accurate passer with touch and good footwork. I see he does not have the “upside” of QB’s like Cutler, George, Rusell or Gabbert, but so what. The risk is minimal and the reward could be high. Maybe he will just be a backup, but maybe he will be a more than competent starter.

    1. Niners did not want to invest a first or second round pick for a QB with Cousins waiting in the wings and the QB sweepstakes next year.

CJB was rated 215, so he was projected to be a 7th round pick.

My quibble with the process was that they traded up needlessly. No previous team had a dire need at QB, so he would have been there at 109. They gave up a draft pick. Some will say that a 7th round pick is worthless, but strategically thinking, there is value in being able to lock up a player under a rookie contract for 4 years.

The trading up to get a player ranked 215, and selecting him at 104, just screamed desperation and reach. It would have been a lot smarter to remain patient, do not give up a draft pick, select a player like Carl Lawson, Josh Reynolds or even Joe Williams, and still get CJB later on.

If they had selected Joe Williams, they would not have had to move up in the draft, and saved another pick.

  58. My cup runneth over.

Now I read that the Niners were trying to trade players. Maybe they should have bundled players to sweeten the deal, but the very fact that they wanted to move players for more draft picks makes another recommendation come true. Some will say it did not because the Niners did not pull it off, but I am happy that they tried, and saw value in the process.

    1. Trading for picks was Se’bs idea everyone.!If the FO attempted a trade it must have been at Seb’s behest!

Did you know that he once dreamed of a world where Dick Tracy talking watches were a reality and not just a comic. Then Steve Jobs and others copied his idea and the rest is history. Yup, he’s our sage…

      1. East, thanks for giving me the opportunity to counter your snark by posting again the 10 things Lynch should do in the draft. I had posted every one of these recommendations over the 2 months before the draft, but put all my ideas together in the morning before the draft started, so if they monitored the blogs, they would have known all about them.

10 things Lynch should do. 7:44 AM, April 27, 2017.

Think strategically. Trading back is shrewd and smart, especially for a 2-14 team that needs bodies. (Great job)

Be aggressive. leverage the number 2 pick into as many second and third round picks as possible. Maybe even trade back from 34 (67).

Avoid the ACL risks. Niners need immediate help and do not have time to let them heal. ACL players rarely ever come back at 100%, and tend to play tentatively because they do not want to risk re-injuring their knee. (Good job).

Avoid the red flag players, If lynch wants to bring back the winning culture, he needs high character players. Mixon and Brantley are radioactive, and should be off their draft board. (Good Job).

Make the safe picks. Avoid the unforced errors like picking players too small or too slow. (Also, do not pick 215th ranked players at 104).

If there is a player they covet, and he might be taken just before they pick, spend an additional later draft pick to move up. It will be worth it to get the player who they want, and can be a good fit for the team. (Foster, CJB, JW).

Make available every non starter as trade bait. Bundle players and/or picks to move up, if possible. Bundle players to make deals more feasible. (Vance).

Do not make desperation deals. Do not let other teams take advantage of the situation. Only make fair deals that both teams can profit from. (Good job).

Think about the future. Accept deals that include 2018 second or third round picks. (BINGO).

Lynch should put on his Trader Bill Hat and have fun. (Double BINGO).

So, other than making unforced errors, Lynch followed them to a tee.

        1. You are a caricature! Your mendacity knows no limits and your powers of self elevation would make Kim Kardashian blush.

          1. You sure seem hurt that I had the temerity to post something like that, but its OK, I plan on posting this many times to counter your snark, so have at it.

Certainly, you did not have the mental capacity to think of something like that, or even dream that some one could be so right.

I welcome opportunities to show you up.

            1. You show no one up Seb! You’re a lonely man in the desert arguing with yourself!

You didn’t hurt me despite your febrile imaginings! Like I said I see you and I’m sad because of your state, but I laugh because you can’t help yourself in wallowing in the horse poo!

Have at it though! You’re a bigger brain than all of us, no doubt! You have to be really desperate to think this amounts to anything Quixote!

Memento mori! But somehow you think you’re climbing Mount Olympus and will be welcomed into the Pantheon of the Gods.

  59. I’ve just circled week 12’s game against the Bears on my calendar. By then, Glennon will have Fox pulling the emergency pressure relief plug before it melts, and causes a mini explosion among the fanbase. Son of a Mitch Trubiscuit to the rescue!

      1. Put the bible down, Seb. The 49ers are still under the bad king rulership and their kingdom will never prosper as long as King Jed rules the franchise and has his jesters.

        1. Darren, I have excoriated Jed many, many times, but this draft, I have to give a little praise.

It sure was nice to see no leaks. That made me extremely happy, and it looks like Jed has learned his lesson.

Even though he exposed his bald spot so it was shining like a beacon, what he said was all good.

I will even give Paraag Kudos. He did not leak, and now, maybe the leaking could now be laid more at Baalke’s door step.

Paraag, when he focuses on the areas where he has the most expertise, can do a good job. Baalke would never do this in a million years, but it sure was refreshing to see Lynch give praise to Paraag for his negotiating skills, and other members of the draft team.

  60. Grant,
What did Reuben Foster do between Thursday and Saturday that caused you to lower your grade on him (B to C-)?

    1. It’s just and his being his usual over-the-top, irrational self.

Foster shows character issues, is Top-6-to-10 in talent and young man who can make an immediate impact. His biggest problem is shoulder-stingers and a penchant for injuring himself by being an exceptionally fierce tackler.

Foster will likely earn a starting role out of the gate this year unless he really just fouls up. He has the talent to be a multi-pro bowl/All Pro LB and is expressing an almost obsessive desire to be an elite NFL player which is a good thing, not a bad thing..

      Grant’s Grade: C-

Williams shows criminal character issues, was a second stringer, quit on his team, only came back because injuries to the other Ute running backs left the team desperate, does not possess top-notch vision has just 20 career receptions over two years, can’t blitz pick-up and is a fumbler meaning he’s a two-down back at best.

Williams is mostly likely to end up a 3rd string back this year with the potential, if he works really hard, to become a significant contributor and possibly take over the starter role from Hyde in a year or two. But he’s got to show dedication. Something that many are not convinced he has.

      Grant’s grade: A+

If character concerns matter, than Grant’s a hypocrite because he ignores Williams who has plenty of character concerns. If they don’t matter, Grant’s a hypocrite because he’s certainly holding them against Foster who, like 1 in every 8 Americans, probably smokes dope on occasion.

If it’s about draft value, Williams is taken in the same general area as the other 5.4 rated backs. Whereas Foster, a 6-to-10 talent, dropped a good 20 spots in the far more valuable 1st round and is a legit, relative to talent, steal.

        1. Grant,
We knew Foster would be sample testing before he was drafted. Still curious to know why you graded him from a B to a C-?
You did a great job in your post draft analysis on each player but there is no clarity
as to why you downgraded Foster from Friday to Saturday.

          1. I gave him a B before I learned about his post draft party. That was a terrible sign.

              1. East, that is not the only thing you have that is minuscule. ;p

                Please learn to spell

            1. Grant,
I wasn’t to excited about that either, but he was not cited for anything other than adding a little more shade on his already tarnished background.

I’m not so sure how many top college players would have celebrated quietly and low-key after becoming millionaires over night.
The kid is young and will definitely need guidance but he’s worth the risk.

              1. Worth the risk yes. Still gives one pause to have so many key events back-to-back.

I didn’t like how he handled the question at the presser. It downgrades him a bit in terms of judgement and maturity.

              2. EC9,
I would like to see the NFL employ a policy where rookies do not receive signing bonuses and guaranteed contracts until they have proven themselves on and off the field.
Making young players overnight millionaires just by inking their name on a contract can lower the motivation to play in some cases.

On pure football talent alone Foster can be Willis 2.0. If he is unable to harness his desire for the bone-head choices, he becomes Aldon Smith 2.0.
If he becomes the latter, I hope he is dismissed from the team.
But for the time being I can’t downgrade him without seeing him play.

  61. Except KS said they had information some team was going to take him in the 4th. the fact they traded up to get him verifies their concern.
They clearly wanted him and made sure they got him. John Lynch was clear; they relied on their evaluation of players not any one else’s so the ranking of 215 did not correspond to the Niners ranking.

  62. It’s too early for grades. Typical Gran Cohn piece – if the pick doesn’t match his expectations, then the grade is low.

        1. Pit bull you’re not Seb, except in your distorted self-imaginings. A relentlessly yapping and neurotic chihuahua you are. But you also are incredibly and aimlessly funny.

          1. GnomoD, considering you are yapping all the time after my posts, you fit the Chihuahua criteria.

And just as effective. Yap away, you cant touch me.

            Figuratively and literally.

You are about as amusing as a bad rash.

    1. Doesn’t matter, my grade is a C and that’s final. Never should’ve been trading when we needed opportunity. 2018 better net us a real Qb and we better not win 9 games as Grant thinks we will.

  63. Well Grant, I have to disagree with you as always. Now I’m not going to be a troll, miser, Donald Trump, Michael Savage, Chef Ramsey, Simon Cowell, Dr. House. My official grade is a C. I’m still not happy we traded away good picks like this. I am hopeful we don’t screw it up this year and we wind up LOSING the potential QB in the draft next year when we go draft shopping to have to get him. I hope this QB from Iowa is not being labeled the next Kurt Warner for the 49ers when we don’t have WRs or a RB.

Anyway, C grade, maybe 4-6 wins, I still think 4 wins in the over/under for our season. NFC East, our division, Chicago that took our Qb, and Carolina will give us trouble. Might win 2 from AFC South.

There’s the 4 win season for the 49ers.

    1. I had 6 wins, but after Lynch hit a grand slam in the draft, I am hoping for a non losing season.

  65. Grant does not seem to understand the evaluation process or value associated with positions. Solomon Thomas was an absolute no-brainer. You always take the best player on the board when sitting at 1 or 2. The only time you do not is if there is a QB worth moving up for. There was not. We grabbed the second cleanest/best player in draft. This includes Adams. Safeties rarely (if ever) get drafted in top 5. The fact that neither Hooker nor Adams, two generational talents were not picked top 5, solidifies my point.

The Ruben Foster pick was a Grade A stroke of genius. Seahawks will regret trading with us forever. Every year, there is some stud with arthritis or ten year down-the-line issue. They drop and go on to become the cornerstones for their teams. Rarely do you ever hear about the issue again. Drives me nuts. These guys are ALL in perfect physical condition, it’s a matter of degrees. The NFL will push and prod to find some imperfection that gets over analyzed. It’s called analysis paralysis. Foster will play for 8-10 years and be the best linebacker in NFL. He is a once in every 10 year talent. He is better than Willis and Kuechly coming out of college.

You don’t give a C because of what might happen. You give a grade based on the talent and where talent was picked. Then, if you want to dock half-a-grade for character, that’s fine. To go from A+++ to C- is utterly irresponsible. Shows a lack of knowledge, experience and maturity related to the draft process itself.

    1. Looks like I missed that Grant has already posted the transcript under “Kyle Shanahan on Joe Williams: “His ability to run the ball is as good as anybody’s.” blog post. Still the video is worth a watch since you pick up a lot of non-verbal information about John and Kyle.

      1. cubus,
Joe Williams has talent, but one of the intangibles that may be getting dismissed on his good college stats is that (at least from my perspective) Williams’ O-line was creating some huge lanes for him to run through.

I liked Hyde when he came out of college because he had the ability to use his size and power to run through tackles although he too had a good O-line. Hyde’ worst enemy has been his health. If he can stay healthy and get good O-line play this season he might become the player we had hoped for when he came out of college.
        Hopefully

  66. Here is a comment on the 49ers first pick in the draft from a guy tweeting with a smart phone.

“Well done @49ers. D always starts up front!” … Ronnie Lott

What does a guy on the street know?

  67. My thoughts exactly Ronnie. Build from the front to the back. Anybody that thinks King Solomon can’t or won’t rush from the edge is in fantasy land. He will lead the team with 11 sacks. Foster will have an immediate impact on the defense. Williams will take over as starting tailback after one game and gain 1150 yards for the season, while Hoyer will have a efficient, productive season at QB, throwing for 18 TD’s and only 5 interceptions, finishing with a 96.0 QB rating. Taylor will be his go to receiver on third down. I’ll stick with my prediction for the upcoming season that I already posted. In short, they will finish 9-7, and a 6th seed wild card slot. They will win the wild card playoff at Carolina, beating them twice including the opening day victory at home, and then they will face the eventual Super Bowl winner, the Dallas Cowboys, at Dallas, where they will lose a close game in the divisional round. 10-8 including playoffs. Very successful season by anybody’s standards. Call your book now and place your bet. I already have. ))

    1. One thing for sure, the new Sheriffs are relentless at adding talent, what a change from the last guy.

  68. I am worried about this single high safety. Ward is good but can’t stay healthy. Who will be his backup? lorenzo jerome? Anyone see mayock loves Jerome but his speed scares me.

  69. Hmmm…

    49ers get the next Cousins

Interesting quarterback dynamic to watch between the 49ers and Redskins. Everyone knows new 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, formerly of the Skins, loves Kirk Cousins and if Washington doesn’t extend Cousins on the franchise tag by the July 15 deadline, then Shanahan will pounce in 2018. I expect the Redskins to make a concerted effort to actually make that happen this time around, but Cousins could always balk and play for $24M this year and then test the market a year from now.

Regardless, it was far less known that both teams were jockeying for potential backup quarterbacks as well. The Redskins really liked C.J. Beathard out of Iowa. He’s the grandson of former Washington GM Bobby Beathard and Allen had him identified as a fourth-round target. Shanahan, who with his father drafted Cousins in Washington, saw a lot of Cousins in Beathard and decided to grab him in the late third round, above some projections but in keeping with the mounting buzz on the passer I was picking up pre-draft.

Funny how these things work out sometimes.
